Tributes flow in for Kerry legend Mícheál as Norma expresses her sadness

“ I am saddened beyond measure to learn of the passing of Mícheál

O’Muircheartaigh. He was a legendary figure in GAA circles, but he was a legendary figure in all of our homes and in all of our hearts. He was synonymous with what it was and what it is to be a true and great Irish gentleman. His unique love of Irish language, culture and sport. His incredible civility and courtesy. His gentleness and his extraordinary compassion and kindness. The very best of us and how we would like the world to see us.

Micheál was very witty and had a remarkable turn of phrase. His GAA commentaries were thrilling, exciting and memorable. One of his most famous pieces of commentary in Croke Park featured the hurlers Pat

Fox from Tipperary and Joe Rabbitte from Galway.

“Pat Fox has it on his hurl and is motoring well now, but here comes Joe Rabbitte hot on his tail… I’ve seen it all now, a Rabbitte chasing a Fox around Croke Park!”

Quintessential Miěcheaěl

Oě’Muircheartaigh. Micheál wore his Kerry credentials with great pride and no matter where he travelled, it was so important that he would have access to the Kerry news and the Kerry papers. And this was long before we had mobile phones or internet. He used to love to tell the story about being in New York and asking for a copy of the Kerryman at a newsstand there.

The man behind the counter turned to him and said, “Do you want the North Kerry edition, or the South Kerry edition?”

Micheál had enormous pride in the fact that Kerry people were everywhere. Everyone knew he was a true Kerry man, no matter where you would find him. We were truly honored as Kerry people to have him as part of our tribe. He was an extraordinarily kind and

Micheál has left a remarkable legacy that speaks to the richness of Irish tradition, Irish folklore, Irish culture, and of course, Gaelic Games, both football and hurling. He was a legend in his lifetime and he remains a legend in his death.

DIP AT DAWN in Fenit on

The DIP AT DAWN in Fenit on Summer Solstice, Friday, 21st June in aid of Vision Ireland could best be described as a unique spiritual experience. The novel fundraiser for Vision Ireland was the brainchild of Senator Martin Conway of Ennistymon, Co. Clare, who has lived most of his life with sight loss. Martin knows the struggle of those who are faced with sight loss so he encouraged the public to take a DIP AT DAWN on the longest day in the year as a symbol of support for the 296, 000 people in Ireland who are blind or visually impaired. Billy Ryle, who led the swim

in Fenit, described the event as an emotional event of extraordinary symbolism. The swimmers were in Fenit at 5am to watch the darkness break into light over Tralee Bay on a dry but overcast day with a moderate wind and a full tide rolling into Locke’s Beach before taking a dip in the breaking waves. As a few sun rays penetrated the clouds, Billy’s thoughts turned to the two deceased individuals who bequeathed the gift of sight to him when he needed a corneal transplant in each of his eyes in 2022. He also said a silent prayer for the blind and

After Seven Years of Waiting, The Straits of Gibraltar Swim Beckoned for Mags!

A Wonderful story about Mags O Sullivan...

“ On Monday, June 17, 2024, my long-awaited dream of swimming the Straits of Gibraltar finally came true, after a seven-year wait. Just after my 60th birthday, I received the thrilling news from Laura Gutiérrez Díaz, President and Coordinator of the ACNEG, that the conditions were right for my swim. For 21 days, no one had swum the Straits due to bad weather, so I felt incredibly lucky. I flew to Tarifa, Spain, on June 8 with my friend and support team member, Frances Lynch. Despite a grim weather forecast, our window was from June 10 to 19, and Laura explained that swims were strictly weatherdependent. High winds or fog could cancel the opportunity. Fortunately, a weather window

opened on June 17, turning my seven-year dream into reality. Though I initially planned a solo swim, I shared the slot with Javier Vázquez Díaz-Mayordomo, a 46-year-old Spaniard from Madrid. Swimming with Javier was a special experience, providing comfort and companionship. We both wore wetsuits and swam at a pace of 3.2 km per hour. We began our swim at 7:30 am from Tarifa Island, Spain, and landed in Morocco after 4 hours and 43 minutes, covering 15.1 kilometers. The route required touching the rockface on both sides, with the distance varying due to strong currents. The deep blue water was warm at 20 degrees Celsius, and I felt energized and relaxed,

mesmerized by my strokes and the powerful currents.

The ACNEG team provided professional and safety-conscious support, guiding us with the boat ‘Columba’ and the zodiac ‘Duende del Mar.’ These boats carried our supplies and ensured we stayed on course. The skipper verified our swim with a crossing sheet, certifying our timing and positions. This successful swim was a team effort, made possible by the commitment of the ACNEG team and the support of my family and friends. I’m deeply grateful to everyone involved and to the Straits of Gibraltar for allowing me this incredible experience.” ... Mags

Tralee Tidy Towns Delighted to Launch Tralee Family Heritage Trail!

Tralee Tidy Towns are thrilled to announce the launch of the Tralee Family Heritage Trail, a walking trail with a StoryMap and activity booklet, funded by The Heritage Council Community Heritage Grants Scheme 2023. Building on the 2023 Tralee Heritage Trail digital tour, also funded by The Heritage Council, the Family Heritage Trail guides you around Tralee town center with an engaging activity booklet for children.

The trail features iconic Tralee locations such as Ashe Memorial Hall, Denny St, Day Place, the Island of Geese, Tralee Courthouse, and the Town Park. It aims to introduce the town’s rich history to everyone who follows it. The development of the trail was a collaborative effort between Tralee Tidy Towns, Mike

FINAL:

The Austin Stack Club Under 21s defeated South Kerry by just 1 point on Wednesday. The Rock boys started well and led at half-time...1-8 to 0-5. When a blonde in economy class gets up and moves to the first class section and sits down.

The flight attendant watches her do this and asks to see her ticket.

She then tells the blonde that she paid for economy class and that she will have to sit in the back.

The blonde replies, “I’m blonde, I’m beautiful, I’m going to toronto and i’m staying right here.”

The flight attendant goes into the cockpit and tells the pilot and the co-pilot that there is a blonde bimbo sitting in first class, that belongs in economy and won’t move back to her seat.

The co-pilot goes back to the blonde and tries to explain that because she only paid for economy she will have to leave and return to her seat.

The blonde replies, “I’m blonde, I’m beautiful, I’m going to toronto and I’m staying right here.”

The co-pilot tells the pilot that he probably should have the police waiting when they land to arrest this blonde woman who won’t listen to reason.

The pilot says, “you say she is a blonde? I’ll Handle this, I’m married to a blonde. I speak blonde.” He goes back to the blonde and whispers in her ear, and she says, “oh, I’m sorry.” And gets up and goes back to her seat in economy.

The flight attendant and co-pilot are amazed and asked him what he said to make her move without any fuss.

“I told her, ‘first class isn’t going to toronto.” ( Thanks mogsie!)

KERINS O’RAHILLYS GAA NOTES

Seniors: “The power of one, if fearless and focused, is formidable, but the power of many working together is better.”

This quote aptly sums up our season in Division 1. Today, we played with cohesion and resilience, securing our Division 1 status with Dingle’s defeat by Spa.

The return of key players boosted our scoring, defense, and playmaking. We started strong, scoring 1-03 in the first 7 minutes. Darragh and Tomás contributed significantly to our 4-13 total, lifting the team’s performance. Defensively, Jake Foley manned the middle, Ben Hanafin pushed forward, and Daniel Bowler scored the first point. Shane McElligott and Tommy Walsh added to our score, and despite injuries to Tommy and David, substitutes Padraig Griffin and Con Barrett maintained our momentum.

We led 2-06 to 0-05 at halftime, though Ballymac’s Micheál Reidy scored a goal just before the break. Darragh’s two additional goals sealed an emphatic win.
