Parkinson’s no obstacle for Carrantuohill challenge

The sky’s the limit for an inspirational West Waterford man diagnosed with Early Onset Parkinson’s Disease as he ends an incredible 28 day adventure that saw him visit all of the EU 27 countries and scaled each of their highest elevation points. On Sunday Ian O’Brien (42) concludes his inspirational mountain marathon when he scales Carrantuohill from Cronin’s Yard at 10.30am and has issued an open invitation to the people of Kerry to join him on his epic adventure. Father of two, Ian was diagnosed with Early Onset Parkinson’s Disease five years ago. His adventure, titled Eur-Up-Ian, started in early June when he scaled Mont Blanc and finishes on Sunday on top of Carrantuohill, the place Ian’s love for hiking began.

“The idea to scale 28 country high points in 28 days came to me very early in my diagnosis. A good friend insisted I climb Ireland’s highest mountain, Carrantuohill. It acted as a metaphor for me. If I can get to the top of Ireland’s highest mountain

then I can get on top of my diagnosis. This European adventure will hopefully spread that message to others living with Parkinson’s Disease.”

Pre-diagnosis was the most difficult time for Ian, not knowing what was wrong with him.

“I had slight motor related symptoms, but it was the non-motor symptoms, especially depression and anxiety that really impacted my life.” Ian’s reaction, both to his diagnosis and since has been incredibly inspirational. Exercise has many benefits in managing the symptoms and slowing the progression of this degenerating neurological condition.

“I have embraced this philosophy as a means of managing my Parkinson’s Disease and found hiking to be my sport of choice.

I am taking it to a new level with this inspiring fundraising and awareness adventure. My aims are to raise positive awareness of Early Onset

Pharmacist Pat Harmon of Mounthawk Allcare Pharmacy recently sponsored the Kerry U14 girls team

Parkinson’s Disease in Ireland and throughout Europe and to promote and fundraise for https://eopd.ie/ and the services available.”

According to Ian any diagnosis comes as a shock and that Parkinson’s disease is perceived to be an older person’s condition. “I am not old. Search the words “Parkinson’s Disease” on the web – you will see pictures of older people. I want to change that

perception and make people aware that it affects many younger people too. Unfortunately, it is the fastest growing neurological condition and my story may become an all too familiar one”.

All donations raised will go to the charity Early Onset Parkinson’s Disease Ireland https://eopd.ie/ .

This team participated in the prestigious Gaynor cup tournament in UL for five days at the beginning of June And represented themselves their teammates , their club , their families and their league proudly.

Q & A

As we come to the end of June and the halfway point of 2023, it’s a good time to assess fitness goals and make a plan to go again for the send half of the year.

Here are 10 tips to help you with your health & fitness goals:

1. Try 1 new workout or exercise routine each month. It can be anything that puts you out of your normal routine.

2. Schedule your workouts in your calendar. If it is scheduled and planned, it’s more likely to get done.

3. Improve your form. Proper form can help you to maximize your results and minimize the chance of injury. Talk to the PT in your gym or exercise class to get advice if you are unsure.

4. Get a workout buddy.

5. Do something active every week that makes you feel calm. Fitness doesn’t need to be about working as hard as you can all the time.

6. Walk or cycle instead of driving where possible.

7. Drink more water.

8. Get 8-9 hours of quality sleep per night.

9. Aim for balance. If you are training at a high intensity regularly, be sure to allow yourself rest days or lower intensity days to allow your body to recover.

10. Find an exercise routine you enjoy. Try different exercise routines, whether in the gym, classes or outdoors. If you find something you enjoy, you are far more likely to stick to it.

Rainbow Jelly

A colourful triple-lay ered treat that tastes as good as it looks!

Ingredients

• 5 sheets leaf gelatine

• 200ml orange and pineapple no-added-sugar squash

• Low-calorie cooking spray

• 2 x 11.5g sachets lime sugar-free jelly crystals

• 2 x 11.5g sachets blackcurrant sugar-free jelly crystals

Method

1. Soak the gelatine in cold water for 5 minutes, or until so ened. At the same time, put the squash in a large jug and pour in 300ml water. Pour half of the squash into a small non-stick saucepan and put it over a medium heat. Take the gelatine out, squeeze out any excess water and add to the squash pan. Stir until dissolved, then add to the remaining squash in the jug, stir well and leave to cool.

2. Spray the inside of a 1.8-litre jelly or bundt mould with 1 spray of low-calorie cooking spray. Using kitchen paper, wipe around the inside of the mould to grease it. Pour in the orange jelly mixture and chill for 3 hours, or until set.

3. In the meantime, put the lime jelly crystals in a jug. Pour over 500ml boiling water and stir until dissolved, then leave to cool.

4. Pour the lime jelly over the set orange jelly and chill for 2-3 hours. While that's chilling, make the blackcurrant jelly as per step 3. Once the lime jelly is set, pour over the blackcurrant jelly. Chill the whole jelly for 4-5 hours, or until completely set.

5. To serve, dip the mould into hot water for 30 seconds, then carefully turn out onto a serving stand or plate. Cut into 8 equal slices.

One of the easiest ways to pull in pollinators of all sorts into the kitchen garden and outdoor BBQ area is by planting lots of wonderful herbs. Herbs are such a brilliant plant that offer not only health, medicinal and cosmetic benefits but also can flower and offer vibrancy, scent and life to your garden during the summer. Chives, mint, marjoram and thyme are some of the most common culinary herbs that are so easy to grow.

They are super for creative cooking and will give your dishes that extra level of flavour and taste. Finding a space to grow herbs is simple. They can be planted in containers, pots, baskets, flower beds and almost anything else that has space to hold some compost/soil and is free draining.

Where possible, be sure to use organic compost such as the Living Green range available at all good garden centres.

Goals galore but Kerry come up short!

Kerry FC began the second half of the season with an away match against Bray Wanderers at the Carlisle Grounds. Bray had previously won 2-0 against Kerry, and the Kingdom aimed to close the gap between the two teams.

Kerry manager Billy Dennehy acknowledged that Bray would see the match as an opportunity to maintain their position in the playoff race and boost their confidence. Dennehy expressed confidence in his players’ experience gained from the first half of the season. The first half started with Kerry

making a familiar mistake as Kevin Williams’ errant pass was intercepted, allowing Bray’s Darren Craven to score from twenty-five yards out. Bray dominated the game, but unexpectedly, Kerry equalized after fourteen minutes through Leo Gaxha. Kerry improved their play and managed to repel Bray’s pressure, with Ben Feeney hitting the post. However, just before halftime, Conor Crowley assisted Ben Feeney, who curled a left-footed shot into the net, giving Bray a 2-1 lead. In the second half, Bray resumed their pressure on Kerry, scoring

controversially through Chris Lyons, despite Kerry’s claims of a foul and offside. Two goals down, Kerry needed to take risks to mount a comeback. However, Bray remained strong, frustrating Kerry’s attempts at possession and limiting their chances to set pieces. The game became scrappy, and both teams struggled to maintain control. Kerry appeared nervous and made unnecessary mistakes, while Bray relied on Kerry’s errors. As time ran out, Bray aimed to secure their victory, but Kerry managed to pull one back through

Cian Brosnan, reducing the scoreline to 3-2. Despite the late scare, Bray emerged as the deserving victors. Kerry showed determination and character until the final whistle, attributes they will carry into their upcoming match against league leaders Galway United.

Overall, Bray Wanderers secured a 3-2 victory over Kerry FC, who displayed resilience but ultimately fell short.

Kerry Airport To Give ‘Cent Mille Bienvenues’ To First Passengers Arriving From Brittany

KERRY Airport is preparing to offer a customary ‘céad míle fáilte’ to the passengers arriving to the county on board the inaugural Chalair flight from Brittany, France next weekend.

The aircraft will touch down at 9.20am on Saturday 1st July with visitors from Quimper and Brest while the first outbound passengers will depart from Kerry just before 10am on the same day.

The seasonal summer service will operate every Saturday with a flight time of less than 1 hour 40 minutes from Kerry to France on board a 70-seat ATR 72 aircraft.

The CEO of Kerry Airport, John Mulhern, said, “Our summer schedule has been very successful so far and the introduction of this new seasonal service to France is

a welcome addition to our choice of destinations from Kerry. We are looking forward to welcoming the first French passengers to Kerry on Saturday morning. Ultimately, their arrival and those who will follow over the coming weeks, will boost the local economy during the peak tourism season.”

Chalair is an independent airline that has been operating scheduled flights in France since 1986. Its fleet of aircraft ranges from 19 to 70 seats and is currently the reference airline for such aircraft on the French market.

These new destinations from Kerry to Quimper and Brest in Brittany will bring to nine the number of routes that will be available to passengers for the summer months.

Margaret’s Loramar Gift Shop... A Passionate Journey of Tradition and Friendship... 41 years later

In the heart of Rock Street, Margaret McIntyre ( formerly O Rahilly ) has woven a tale of dedication and love through her traditional gift store. Since its establishment in 1982, Margaret’s store, originally located at no. 72 Rock Street beside Linnanes Pub, has become a testament to the joy of pursuing one’s passions and transforming them into a lifelong endeavor. Her story exemplifies the saying, “Find something you love, make money at it, and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

For over three decades, Margaret’s store thrived at this address, becoming a beloved fixture in the community. However, in 2014, Margaret contemplated retirement. Yet, a fire still burned within her, and she realized that she was ‘too young ‘ to step away from the business she adored. With renewed determination, Margaret relocated to lower Rock Street, just opposite Supervalu, injecting fresh energy into her cherished enterprise. Throughout her journey, Margaret has fostered deep connections, forging enduring friendships with

customers from both the town and the surrounding countryside. Visitors travel from places like Dingle, Killarney, North Kerry, Listowel & Ballyheigue to experience the warm embrace of Margaret’s traditional gift store. Whether patrons come seeking the perfect gift or simply to share a friendly chat, Margaret ensures that her customers never feel pressured. She understands the value of genuine connections and believes in providing a welcoming environment where everyone feels at ease.

The store itself carries the name ‘LORAMAR,’ a beautiful amalgamation of Margaret’s daughter Lorraine’s name, her husband Aidan’s name, and her own. This personal touch reflects the love and support of her family, a constant source of inspiration in her entrepreneurial journey. While the stock in LORAMAR has remained consistent over the years, Margaret always finds ways to incorporate fresh elements into the store. Vintage signs, a recent addition, became immensely

popular during the lockdown period, capturing the nostalgic hearts of patrons. Additionally, the store boasts a selection of coveted Tivoli lamps, with prices starting as low as €20. Margaret’s commitment to providing gift options is unwavering, as she endeavors to keep a diverse range of items in-store, including popular China teasets , very collectible , and exquisite Crystal pieces, perfect for weddings and special occasions.

Margaret’s dedication to her customers is further reflected in her monthly special offers, ensuring there is always something new and exciting to discover. Her tireless efforts are visible as she works six days a week, from Monday to Saturday, from 10 am to 5 pm, even skipping lunch breaks to serve her loyal clientele. As Margaret looks back on her remarkable journey, she expresses sincere gratitude to the customers who have supported her over the 41 years...Margaret opened originally on June 26th 1982 . She warmly welcomes new visitors

each month, fostering a sense of community that is the hallmark of her traditional gift store. Margaret’s unwavering happiness and passion ensure that she will continue to be a cherished presence in Rock street for years to come, as she spreads joy and inspiration through her traditional little gift store.
