LEGAL MATTERS CORNER
MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
Arnoldis wants a drone for his 11th Birthday and his father wants to be informed on the laws which govern Drones in Ireland to establish if his son will be able to comply prior to buying the gift.
Flying and Operating Drones in Ireland is subject to European Union Regulation 2019/947. The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) supervises and implements the regulation in Ireland. The Regulation allows registered operators and pilots to fly their drones across the EU. You must register as a drone operator if your drone weighs over 250 grams or if it has a camera or sensor. Registration as an operator costs €30 and is valid for two years. To register, you must be 16 or over, set up an account and verify your identity and take an online training course that lasts about 15 minutes. If your drone is above 4 kilograms, or if you are planning on doing certain activities with your drone, you must do extra training. Once you are registered, you must label your drone with your drone operator ID. Flying drones is categorized based on risk: Open Category, Specific Category and Certified Category.
Open Category refers to drone flights which are deemed at low risk You
If you have a legal query or need further information on any item
can fly an ‘open’ category drone (weighing under 25 kilograms) without permission, as long as: The drone is no more than 120 metres above the level of the land or water directly below, the drone is not outside your line of sight, the drone is not on or near certain exempted zones such as around hospitals and aerodromes and you capacity to operate the drone is not affected by the consumption of alcohol or illness. There are restrictions in place on whether and to what extent you can fly over or near uninvolved people or crowds and whether you can fly it in urban areas. Drones that weigh more than 25 kilograms cannot be flown without the explicit permission of the Irish Aviation Authority. If you want to fly your drone outside the limits of the ‘open category’ you must inform the Irish Aviation Authority and generally await an Operational Authorisation. The Irish Aviation Authority or the garda can take your drone if they believe it is likely that you will use your drone in breach of the regulations. So think before boldly going where no drone has gone before.

Tralee sisters romance novel has TV potential!
The Rose Hotel transformed into a den of laughter, music, and general tomfoolery on Sunday, 2nd July. The occasion? The long-awaited book launch of Denise Brassil’s contemporary romance novel “What Anna Did Next.” With Radio Kerry’s Elaine Kinsella on stage as the MC for the day, it was an unforgettable afternoon of craic and entertainment.
Over 300 people were in attendance and listened with emotion and laughter as Denise read an excerpt
from the book written in partnership with her late sister Martha.
Elaine skillfully grilled Denise, extracting amusing anecdotes and delving into the secrets behind her creative genius and separated the facts from fiction. Pressing her on whether the book has legs to make it to TV, Denise replied coyly, “yes!”
Just when the excitement peaked, a momentary hush fell over the room. Suddenly, none other than “fastest fingers”Liam O’Connor
burst on to the stage. His incredible musical talent, along with his son and daughter, gripped the audience - feet tapped, heads bobbed, and inhibitions evaporated! One would easily forget it was 4pm in the afternoon.
The book €14.99, is available to buy now in Polymaths and O Mahonys

Sean Morris has been selected to represent Ireland!!!
“Following two tough trials in February and April this year and making it through the final 4-day long selection camp last week at the National Rowing Centre in Cork, Tralee Rowing Club is delighted to confirm that Sean Morris (17) has secured a place on the Rowing Ireland U19 Team to represent his country at the Coupe de la Jeunesse (European) Regatta being held on the 28-30th July 2023 in Amsterdam. His Dad (and Tralee Rowing Club chairperson ) James says “The dark winter nights in the gym and the dawn rows out on the canal here at home in Tralee with his fellow clubmates have paid off handsomely and we wish him “the luck of the Irish” as he heads off to Athlone for another intensive fortnight of preparation with his new team mates Dom Casey (Skibbereen RC) Fionn McDonnell (St. Michael’s RC,
Limerick and Riann Claffey (Athlone BC)” The Club Captain Heidi Giles says
“Anyone who works with young people will know it has its moments, moments of despair and frustration and of absolute joy and delight. This is obviously a very special moment, to see a young rower set a goal for themselves and go about achieving it, choosing it day in day out, dedicating time, energy, and emotion to the endeavour is fantastic, to be part of their achievement is a privilege, I am proud of Sean and all those who have contributed to his selection for an Irish crew and who have built a club that is capable of facilitating this achievement.” We are thrilled for him, his family and all at Tralee Rowing Club who have helped him work towards this since TRC was founded
LAVENDER... INSPIRATION AND BEAUTY IN A FRAGRANT FLOWER.
Everyone’s garden is different, some are sunny, while others are shady, dry, damp or more likely a mixture of both, and that will dictate the plants you can grow to some degree. Which direction your garden faces is very important, for instance a North facing garden is completely shaded, whereas a South facing will always have full sun, and is generally warmer so you can grow more sun-loving tender plants such as Lavender. By gardening sustainably, and in an environmentally conscious manner gardeners can make a considerable difference to the wildlife population in their immediate area, as well as the country as a whole.
Lavender is a must have for the garden on so many levels – for scent, for flowers, for bees, and butterflies and also for birds. A brilliantly versatile plant for planting alone or with other plants, Lavender looks great edging a traditional border, planted in a gravel garden, or what is best suited to Kerry, is a container grown Lavender. Kerry FC to field first ever Women’s League of Ireland side from 2024 onwards
Kerry Football Club has made an exciting announcement as they plan to introduce a women’s team to the EA Sports Women’s Under 17 League of Ireland Academy starting from the 2024 season. This marks a significant milestone for football in Kerry, as it will be the first time a women’s team from the county competes in the national leagues. The club’s inclusion in the Women’s EA Sports Under 17 LOI Academy aligns with their long-term goal of eventually reaching senior women’s football in the League of Ireland. The introduction of this pathway for female footballers in Kerry is expected to boost the women’s game in the region and provide players with opportunities to showcase their talents at the national level.
Kerry FC’s General Manager, Sean O Keeffe, expressed his pride in the club’s inclusion in the EA Sports Women’s U17 LOI Academy, drawing parallels to the progress made by the men’s team and emphasizing the importance
of building a solid foundation at the academy level. Damian Locke, the Head of Academy, thanked the FAI for their support and highlighted the club’s commitment to providing equal opportunities for girls within their academy system. This development is particularly significant as it eliminates the need for girls from Kerry to travel around the country to participate in the Women’s League of Ireland.
Darren Aherne, FAI Regional High Performance Coach, commended Kerry FC for their decision, emphasizing that it is a crucial step in establishing a comprehensive player pathway for female players in the region. Aherne expressed his enthusiasm for the positive impact this move will have on the local girls’ game. Overall, the entry of Kerry FC into the U17 girls’ national league signifies a promising time for women’s football in the county and sets the stage for potential future advancements.

Kerry avenge record defeat by nearly turning over Galway Utd
Kerry FC faced Galway United in a match at Eamonn Deacy Park. Kerry had previously suffered a heavy defeat against Galway earlier in the season.
They were unlucky not to secure at least a point in their recent match against Bray. Young midfielder Cian Barrett decided to stay in Tralee on loan from Shamrock Rovers, bringing valuable experience to Kerry’s inaugural season in the League of Ireland. Kerry FC manager Billy Dennehy hoped his team could test themselves against Galway, a strong side expected to earn promotion.
The first half started evenly, with Kerry having a couple of chances. However, Galway eventually took the lead through a header from Maurice Nugent. Kerry had penalty shouts turned down and
missed another opportunity. The scoreline didn’t reflect Kerry’s strong performance against the league leaders. In the second half, Kerry continued to create chances but couldn’t convert them. They were unlucky not to equalize, with a free header from Leo Gaxha and a driven shot from Ryan Kelliher narrowly missing the target. The team’s wellstructured core and determined midfielders gave their all, and Sean McGrath ran tirelessly. Despite their efforts, Galway managed to secure a 1-0 victory. Kerry’s players, coaches, and supporters showed great commitment throughout the match.
Kerry FC will play Treaty United in their next game at Mount Hawk Park, aiming to replicate their performance and secure their first home win of the season.
