Tralee's New Skatepark Named "Ox" Park After Bruce Kelliher In January this year, Irish and internationally famous skateboarder and Tralee native Bruce ‘Ox’ Kelliher passed away at 48 years of age. He left behind his wife Michelle, sons Ruben, Mason and Archie as well parents Evelyn and Rae of Oakpark, Tralee. Bruce grew up in Tralee and was passionate about the provision of a skatepark for the town. Members of Tralee Skateboard Community Group were deeply saddened by his death and decided to honour
his legacy by proposing to name the new park in his honour. Justin McCarthy of the group commented: "Bruce grew up in Ard na Lí, a short distance from the Sports Complex. It seems fitting that the park would be dedicated in his name, not only for his efforts and input to the project throughout the years but as a gesture of gratitude from the local and national Irish skateboarding community". Bruce's brother Graham, on behalf of the family, said: "If the youngsters of Tralee and Kerry can enjoy the skatepark half as much as Bruce enjoyed his life then we would be privileged to have it named in his honour. OX Park is a fitting tribute". At a meeting today, councillors in the Tralee Municipal District agreed unanimously to name the Tralee Skatepark the “Ox” Park. The new skatepark in Tralee

AND NOW FOR THE GOOD NEWS... from The Tralee Advertiser Team and Tralee Chamber Alliance
Tralee Becomes The Latest Area To Fly The Purple Flag In 2022 Tralee is officially celebrating today after receiving the news that they have been awarded the prestigious Purple Flag accreditation for its evening and night-time economy (ENTE) – similar to the Blue Flag for beaches – which aims to raise standards and broaden the appeal of town and city centres between the hours of 17:00 & 2.30pm. Areas awarded the Purple Flag are recognised for providing a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture, while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents. The last few years were not what anyone expected and we had to tread new hospitality territory in the fight against COVID-19. Purple Flag has been important to many of our towns and cities that held the accreditation during lockdown,
as well as being instrumental in reopening policies and strategies working with key stakeholders as our towns and cities adjust to the new way of life post-pandemic. The Tralee Chamber Purple Flag committee in collaboration with Kerry County Council, An Garda Siochana and the Tralee vintners submitted a detailed renewal application and after a meticulous assessment from independent judges we were thrilled with the news that Tralee passed all Purple Flag criteria, as well as attaining the thresholds of decreasing crime statistics. The town was commended for offering vibrant appeal, a stimulating destination, and a strong partnership approach across all stakeholders. Highlights from Tralee’s submission
include the re-launch of the ‘Safe Nights Out’ campaign, the Street Mural project, the ‘See it Say it’ campaign and the Ask for Angela campaign being taken on by the Tralee Taxi Association.
In addition to Tralee, we celebrate 6 areas receiving a Full Renewal accreditation, and 11 areas receiving an Interim Renewal accreditation.
Sustainability Focus of Kerry ETB reaps rewards
Kerry ETB have been working continuously on the implementation of its sustainability strategy over the past number of years which has seen a number of green initiatives being introduced across its schools and adult education centres.
Employers in the county and beyond are now reaping the benefits of the introduction of a sustainability module by Kerry College as an add on to many of its programmes. Emma Hayes, a teacher at Kerry College, led the roll out of a City and Guilds Certificate in Sustainability to adult learners at a number of its campuses this year. Emma says ‘This module was very well received by students many of whom have secured employment and are putting the knowledge they acquired on sustainability

Evan Murphy, a Kerry College learner who studied under Emma’s guidance for this City and Guilds certification gave his thoughts on the programme. ‘Sustainability is paramount in today’s changing world. The negative impact of human industries on the global environment needs to be addressed. This module showed young people the basics of what they can do and where they can go for help in addressing their businesses impact on the environment. Kerry ETB continues to add value to their qualifications for

Shaws blast past their 100k raised for Children’s Health Foundation Crumlin Shaw’s Department Stores have this month announced that they have raised more than €100,000 for Children’s Health Foundation Crumlin, supporting sick children and their families in Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin; far exceeding their original €30,000 charity partnership target. But the team at Shaws aren’t finished yet! Shaws plan to raise the bar even higher throughout the remainder of 2022 through their participation in Children’s Health Foundation’s series of Dare to be Brave events, including a staggering 13,000 feet skydive challenge. In addition to this Shaws will also be hosting a variety of in-store fundraising events in the coming months to raise vital, life-saving funds for Children’s Health Foundation Crumlin,(CHFC) and are calling on their customers to dig-deep and help them continue their efforts to help give every sick child the very best chance. In 2019, Shaws Department Stores’ employees voted overwhelmingly to support Children’s Health Foundation Crumlin as their charity partner until 2021. The decision to

commit to helping sick children in Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin was an easy one for many staff members right across Shaws 16 nationwide stores, but particularly for Mark Masterson, an employee at Shaws Waterford store who had experienced first-hand the positive impact the wonderful team of doctors, nurses, and front-line workers within the hospital had made on the life of his son Shay during his time spent in the Children’s Heart Centre. Not long after the charity partnership began, the Covid-19 pandemic saw all Shaws’ stores closed for 20 weeks in 2020, which had a severe effect on the ability of the Shaws team members to raise funds . Once the worst of the lockdown was over, Shaws generously decided to extend their partnership with CHFC to counteract the time their stores had spent closed. Since then, Shaws have kicked their fundraising initiatives into high-gear, holding numerous staff-led charity events including bakes sales, head shaves, hair-waxing, fitness challenges, tea & coffee
mornings, Christmas jumper days, creating Shaws charity calendars, assault courses and even abseiling 150 feet from the top of Croke Park’s iconic Hogan Stand. Commenting on the success of their partnership at today’s €100,000 cheque presentation, Conrad Digan, CEO of Shaws Department Stores said: “I am very proud of our Shaws team and our loyal customers who have helped us raise this staggering figure. Throughout this partnership our colleagues have demonstrated passion and commitment in fundraising for this truly great cause.

Denise Fitzgerald, Chief Executive of CHFC said: “We are quite simply blown away by the incredible support that Shaws Department Stores have shown sick children and their families in Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin. . On behalf of the entire Children’s Health Foundation Team and the staff, families and patients in Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin, thank you for supporting the urgent and life-saving work that happens in the hospital every minute of every day.”

Kerry’s mini gathering titled ‘An Turas Mór/ Homecoming Kerry’ takes place over five weekends during the month of October. These will include Street Spectacles, seasonal festivals, clan gatherings of the O’Sullivan, O’Connor,

Mayor Flynn invited Kerry’s London Association to become actively involved in the event and a number of joint initiatives were discussed including honouring those past and present who have brought honour to Kerry and their host communities abroad through their exceptional service. A MAGICIAN GETS HIMSELF A PARROT FOR HIS ACT
After a couple weeks of performing with the magician the parrot begins to heckle the magician during his shows. “it’s under his hat, it’s up his sleeve, his assistant has it.” The magician is performing on a cruise ship when the ship sinks. The magician wakes up on a piece of driftwood with the parrot standing on the opposite end. The parrot and the magician spend 2 days floating at sea without saying a word. Finally the parrot says, “Alright, I give up. Where’s the boat?”

So he hired the best attorney he could find. A few days into the case, the attorney calls the art collector on the phone. He says, “Saul, I’ve got some good news and some bad news.” The art collector replied, “I’ve had an awful day; let’s hear the good news first.”

The attorney said, “Well, I met with your wife today, and she informed me that she invested $5,000 in two pictures that she thinks will bring a minimum of $15-20 million. I think she could be right.” Saul replied enthusiastically, “Well done! My wife is a brilliant businesswoman! You’ve just made my day. Now I know I can handle the bad news. What is it?” The attorney replied, “The pictures are of you with your secretary.”

I booked my holidays for September. Do I have enough time to tone my arms, tummy and bum and I also have cellulite that needs attention? Lorraine Hi Lorraine, yes you are not alone and you have plenty of time. As many people are heading away to the sunshine, they are getting body treatments at CHRC to get beach ready! Patients want results, but without the pain and downtime that comes with surgery. At CHRC, we carry out treatments for body sculpting and contouring. The first one is fat reduction and the second is skin tightening. Both treatments are very safe and comfortable and part of our FDA approved Venus Bliss device which is non-surgical and non-invasive. Fat reduction is for stubborn pockets of fat at the waist, back and abdomen. It improves body contours without surgery, scars or downtime. It selectively breaks down fat cells which are naturally eliminated by the body. Skin tightening uses advanced radio frequency technology tightens the skin and reduces circumferences to contour the body. The applicator has a deep effect on the tissue and the skin will be firmer and smoother. The cellulite reduction treatment also works on underlying fat cells while encouraging the production of collagen and elastin to approve the appearance of bumps and dimpling. A course of treatments is recommended and treatment time is usually 30 minutes. The area will feel quite warm and will stay that way for up to two hours after your treatment. Areas that can be treated are abdomen, waist, back, thighs, arms and bums. 8-10 treatments are recommended to achieve your desired result. Contact us to make an appointment and find out the best treatment options for you.

Award for Vincent's charity operations in Tralee The Vincent’s Order Fulfilment Centre (OFC) in Tralee has won the Team of the Year award in the South West region at this year's Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) national retail awards. Two other awards were won in Kerry with the Vincent’s charity shop in Dingle winning on the double. It won an SVP Retail Olympics award and the Best Window Display award. Another award went to the South West with Sonia O’Neill the Retail Regional Coordinator for the region receiving a Rendu Retail Development Programme award. The awards presentation followed a one-day conference which discussed how retail can be community based, help reduce poverty and operate in a real sustainable manner. There are over 234 SVP shops throughout Ireland, trading under the ‘Vincent's’ name. Vincent’s shops are

a hugely important aspect of the service SVP provides to those who seek its assistance. Not only do the shops provide goods at affordable prices and help reconnect people, disconnected by poverty, they also provide an income source for the Society, which is directed back into the local communities. Vincent’s are also committed to the concept of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.by recycling 97% of donated items. Dermot McGilloway, SVP National Retail Development manager said, “We believe that we have taken a lead role in our sector in meaningfully promoting the circular economy and are committed to tackling the twin problems of social deprivation on the one hand and the environmental damage caused by the excessive consumption of fast fashion on the other. 'Women's Shed' is set to launch this month
Here is a little background to our Project to Open a Women’s SHED says a spokeswoman from Phoenix Women's Centre (located at Maine St Tralee) "The Women’s Centre was set up in 2018 to provide support services. The Women's SHED concept is about improving the quality and health of women’s lives, through engagement, inclusion, learning and stimulating and fun workshops. There is a massive growth nationwide of Women’s Sheds. There is none in Kerry. We are responding to needs expressed to us by the women of Kerry. We have no dedicated funding. We are in a rented office and now renting a hall one morning a week.It is extremely difficult to predict our future without the finances to plan ahead. There seems to be a different attitude to Men’s Sheds compared to Women’s Centres, groups or services.
There is a Govt funded Men’s Sheds Association, registered as a charity, employing staff to facilitate the running of Men’s Sheds in Ireland. There is currently no dedicated space for women to meet and organise in Kerry and no dedicated funding. By comparison, there are 15 Men’s Sheds locations registered in Kerry. In the longer term Women need a community space. We need our own building. Ideally with a space to develop a community garden. We have written to Kerry County Council and we are hoping they will support the establishment of a permanent space for women in Kerry. Perhaps a new build or an opportunity to renovate a vacant commercial property.
The Women’s Shed will improve the quality of women’s lives. They offer opportunities to interact, feel included, participate in programmes that

The Rising go on stage on Friday, July 29th at 9pm for what promises to be a memorable performance. The concert is free and open air.

Regular readers of this column will know we usually end with our golf notes and these and the Pitch and Putt notes are in their usual spot. However it is not every week that some of the world’s best golfers come to town. Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas enjoyed what the wonderful Tralee Golf Club had to offer, on and off the course, at the weekend. With so many of the top players in Adare and looking ahead to the 150th British Open at St Andrews later in the month could we see a few more teeing it up in Barrow. They are now in with the big boys in the Garvey’s Senior championship and proved that they are well able to compete at the highest level going down narrowly to Abbeydorney 4-14 to 4-09. This puts the winners into the Last 8. Causeway and Ballyduff drew 0-14 to 1-11 with the former qualifying for the knock-out stages. Crotta made it back to back wins with a 1-20 to 0-15 point win over Lixnaw. There are still a number of positions still to be decided from the last round of Group games.
