€5.8m creative fund for Kerry!

Minister for Education and Kerry T.D Norma Foley has expressed her approval of the €5.8 million funding allocated for creative, cultural, and artistic initiatives in Co Kerry. These projects are part of the Creative Climate Action Fund II, following the success of the previous fund in 2021.

The Creative Ireland initiative focuses on supporting projects that raise awareness about climate change and encourage citizens to adopt sustainable behaviors. Three significant projects in Co Kerry will benefit from this funding. One of them is a creative coastal resilience proposal for the Maharees, aiming to embed an artist in the Maharees Conservation Committee’s work to address climate change challenges in the region. Another project focuses on protecting biodiversity in Ballybunion, where artists will engage the local community to explore strategies for ensuring food security and addressing climate change. Lastly, an eco-visual workshop will empower people with intellectual disabilities to create recycled-art projects that promote sustainability and energy conservation. Minister Foley commended the recipients of the fund and praised the Creative Ireland funding for its impactful approach to raising awareness about climate change and biodiversity loss. She believes that these projects will inspire local communities to take meaningful action in response to environmental challenges.

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER

According to the Tourist Traffic Act 19392016, self-catering holiday cottages in Ireland must include:

• Sleeping, dining and lounge accommodation

• Storage space

• Toilet and bathing facilities

• Kitchen and cooking facilities

However, holiday lets are not covered by the same regulations as a long term rented property, so it is very important to check what facilities are available with the property. Moreover, the consumer legislation that we have in Ireland says that in relation to a service which holiday lets are that they must use materials of merchantable quality, and that they have the necessary skill to provide the service and use the skill in providing the service. If a holiday let isn’t as advertised or there is some shortfall in the accommodation in Ireland one could use the small claims court to get a deposit or money back. But these protections may not be available in the country that one is going to abroad and it may be more difficult to get redress. Travel insurance may help to some degree with this. Often the

star rating can give an indication in relation to the facilities. Be careful especially with holiday lettings abroad that it is a genuine letting and not a scam. Scammers put up fake pictures and demand an advance deposit on a fictitious property. In many websites reviews can be very helpful to alert one to issues with a property so do look through the reviews as often people will be honest with any difficulties with the property e.g., 10 miles from the nearest shop or that there were narrow steep stairs as well of course as waxing lyrical about a beautiful property so reviews are a good indicator. Many short-term holiday lets now request a significant deposit and may put the blame on you for damage that may have been caused by the previous incumbent or the damage was there already, so it is a good idea to take photos before you settle in to your accommodation. Be careful to check for extras. Many mobile homes or even apartments will charge extra for sheets and linen and even electricity so check the terms of the letting in advance. If an issue arises in relation to e.g. AirBNB accommodation they have a mediation service to help sort matters out.

Happy Holidays

Longford forge out another narrow win to win 2-1 V Kerry FC

Kerry faced Longford Town at Bishopsgate, marking their second encounter this season. The match saw the debut of four new signings, including Lee Axworthy and Daniel Okwute. The first half showed Kerry’s early dominance with a high press strategy, but Longford managed to score just before halftime through Gary Armstrong’s superb strike.

In the second half, Kerry equalized with a penalty from Leo Gaxha, displaying good pressure in both defense and attack. However, Longford regained the lead with Christian Magersun’s goal from a corner kick. Despite Kerry’s efforts, they couldn’t find an equalizer, and the game ended 2-1 in favor of Longford.

Kerry FC manager, Billy Dennehy, praised the impact of the new signings and their competition for starting places. Despite the loss, Kerry displayed promising signs, dominating possession at times. They now look forward to the FAI Cup’s first-round clash against Ringmahon Rangers, hoping to secure their first home win of the season.

New location , same smiles at Down Syndrome Kerry new store 321

The launch of the new store took place last Friday .Light refreshments and Special Offers abound , there was a steady stream of wellwishers , and customers through the doors . Assistant manager Grace O Donnell says “ We are delighted to announce the opening of our new shop which has relocated to 11 Strand Street, right beside where we were. This is no ordinary shop; it is here to show the community of Tralee the ability of people with Down syndrome. The store , called 321, currently employs 1 adult with Down syndrome for 21`hours a week and we provide work

experience and training for 11 adults with Down syndrome. Every one of our members can contribute to society if just given the opportunity and support. Our shop provides this opportunity and gives them the chance to explore if retail is an area they would like to gain employment in. Of course, we are also helping to save the planet by reducing the need for Fast Fashion and selling high quality preloved products that can gain a new life in a new home. The surplus profits made from 321 are reinvested in our members by providing much needed services such as Speech and Language

Therapy and Occupational Therapy to name but a few.

Manager Rachel Griffin says “ We could not run this project without the help of many. Schemes such as TUS and CE and our many volunteers are invaluable. It is you the public that must receive thanks also because without your generous donations we would not be here.

We rely solely on local donations as we do not have another shop that we can exchange stock with. . We are delighted to have Ryan Griffin (Special Olympics Silver Medal Winner) cutting the ribbon for us this evening ...

Okwute Signs For Kerry Fc

Kerry Football Club are delighted to announce the return of Daniel Okwute to the club as the Kerry man has penned a deal to re-join the League of Ireland outfit from Stockport County. The 19 year old made the move from our Under 19 set up to Stockport County who play in League Two and narrowly missed out on promotion last season

The centre forward will now make the move home to his native Kerry and play for the League of Ireland newcomers for the remainder of the season. Okwute is no stranger to the SSE Airtricity First Division, having moved from Stockport County to Finn Harps for the first half of the 2023 season to date. A familiar face around Mounthawk Park, Okwute made a welcome return to Mounthawk Park, although wearing the blue of our Donegal based opponents. Daniel will don the number 21 shirt for Kerry FC.

Speaking on his arrival to Kerry Football Club, Okwute said “It feels great to be back here in Kerry and get the chance to play for Kerry FC in our first season in the senior League of Ireland. I played in the academy here for a number of years and it always gave me a good sense of pride to wear the Kerry jersey.

Motorcycle hearse a first for Kerry

A local funeral director is changing the way things are done by being the first in Kerry to introduce a unique and memorable motorcycle hearse service.

Sean Lynch, owner of Hogan’s Funeral Home in Tralee, has introduced a unique option for customers seeking fitting tributes for their departed loved ones. Combining his passion for motorbikes with his business, he recently acquired a Honda Goldwing 1800 Trike Motorcycle, the first of its kind in Munster. The motorcycle hearse features a fully enclosed carriage with a walnut bed and leather lining.

Sean, who bought his first motorbike at 16, expressed his desire to bring this distinctive service to Kerry, stating that motorcycles hold a special place in one’s heart. After a two-year search, he found the perfect black Honda Goldwing 1800 Trike Motorcycle and separate carriage, which has been attracting attention outside the funeral home.

The unique setup involves the trike leading the way, followed by the carriage carrying the coffin. While the service appeals to members of the biking community, nonmembers of all ages and genders have expressed interest in using it for their own funerals.

Having been in the funeral business for over 30 years, Sean purchased Hogan’s Funeral Home in 2021, a well-established business with deep history in the town. The premises were once the Dingle/ Fenit Railway Station, but after extensive refurbishment, they now offer a contemporary look and feel with two viewing rooms (The Rose Room and The Fuschia Room), a family room with complimentary refreshments, The Serenity Garden for reflection, and The Garden Room adorned with stunning local pictures. Hogan’s Funeral Home provides various services, including religious, non-religious, civil, and humanist options. Sean’s aim is to make the motorcycle hearse available to

everyone, not just bikers. While a driver can be provided, in some cases, family members may choose to drive their loved ones on their final journey. The goal is to exceed customers’ expectations by offering a range of alternative services, such as regular hearses, horse and carriage,

Ballyfinnane Hillclimb was deemed a massive success

Kerry Motor Club and the Ballyfinnane Community Hall Association made motorsport history in a mid-Kerry village on Sunday. Celebrating the 120th anniversary of the first motorsport event in Kerry, they organized a hillclimb event, utilizing a new road section due to modern safety rules. The 1.41km course from

Aubee Bridge to the Ballyfinnane Community Hall attracted huge crowds and included classic car displays and a motorcycle exhibition. Winner John Donnely from Tyrone completed the course in an incredible 44.29 seconds in his Pilbeam single-seater racing car. Limerick’s Ben O’Brien came second, and Ed Synan from Shanagolden

finished third overall in his Escort. Kerry Motor Club’s Sean Moriarty expressed gratitude for the support from Ballyfinnane residents, who embraced the idea and contributed to making the event successful. Local drivers, including Vince McSweeney, took part, with the rules requiring a Kerry address to qualify for awards. Kerry drivers

motorcycles, trucks, tractors, and limousines. Ultimately, Sean wishes to honor each individual’s uniqueness and enable their families to commemorate them in their own special way.

claimed several class awards, and the event also welcomed rally cars for an enjoyable day.

Kerry Motor Club officials praised the local community and sponsors for their invaluable support in making the event possible.

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE !

TROPHY WIFE

Bob, a 70-year-old, extremely wealthy widower shows up at the Country Club with a breathtakingly beautiful 25 year-old blonde who knocks everyone’s socks off with her youthful looks and charm.

She hangs onto Bob’s arm and listens intently to his every word.

His buddies at the club are all aghast. At the very first chance, they corner him and ask, “Bob, how did you get the trophy girlfriend?”

Bob replies, “Girlfriend? She’s my wife!”

They’re amazed, but continue to ask. “So, how did you persuade her to marry you?”

“I lied about my age”, Bob replies.

“What, did you tell her you were only 50?”

Bob smiles and says, “No, I told her I was 90.”

MY WIFE WON’T LIKE IT

One day I accidentally overturned my golf buggy. Elizabeth, a very attractive and keen golfer, who lived in a villa on the golf course, heard the noise and called out, Are you okay, what’s your name?”

“Its Jack , and I’m Okay thanks,” I replied.

“Jack , forget your troubles. Come to my villa, rest a while, and I’ll help you get the cart up later.”

“That’s mighty nice of you,” I answered, but I don’t think my wife would like it.”

“Oh, come on,” Elizabeth insisted. She was very pretty and persuasive... I was weak.

“Well okay,” I finally agreed, and added, “but my wife won’t like it.”

After a restorative brandy, and some creative putting lessons, I thanked my host. “I feel a lot better now, but I know my wife is going to be really upset.”

“Don’t be silly! Elizabeth said with a smile, She won’t know anything. By the way, where is she?”

“Under the cart!”

I WAS DIGGING A HOLE IN MY BACKYARD...

I was digging a hole in my backyard when I found a box filled with gold coins. In my excitement I ran back in the house to tell my wife when I remembered why I was digging a hole.

HOW DOES AN APPLE WATCH OWNER KNOW THAT IT’S MIDDAY?

I came home from the golf course today, and found a note my wife had left on the refrigerator. IT’S NOT WORKING.

I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE.

GONE TO STAY WITH MY SISTER

I opened the fridge. The light came on. The beer was cold.

What the HELL is she talking about?

ROY HODGSON IS ON THE JONATHAN ROSS SHOW

Afterwards the host takes his guest down to the local pub. They leave the pub completely smashed and Roy and Jonathan decide to break into a distillery. Roy is the first to open a cask, tastes it, and asks Jonathan, “Is this whiskey?”

Jonathan replies, “Not as wisky as wobbing a bank!”

WHY DO SCUBA DIVERS ALWAYS FALL BACKWARDS INTO THE WATER?

If they fell forward they’d still be in the boat.

EASTER JOKE

This rooster wakes up early Easter Sunday morning. He sticks his head out of the chicken coop, and sees all these multicolored eggs all over the barnyard. He takes a look at the eggs, takes a look at the hens, takes another look at the eggs, takes one more look at the hens, he thinks about it for a minute, then he walks across the barnyard and smashes the peacock.

Should I get Antivirus for my Laptop or desktop

Here are a few factors to consider when deciding whether to get antivirus software:

Operating System: Di erent operating systems have di erent levels of vulnerability to malware. Windows systems tend to be more targeted by malware, so having antivirus software is generally recommended. However, even if you have a macOS or Linux system, it's still a good idea to consider antivirus protection, as no system is completely immune to threats.

Online Activities: If you frequently browse the internet, download les, or use email attachments, you are more exposed to potential malware. Activities like online shopping, banking, or accessing sensitive information increase the importance of having antivirus software.

Device Usage: If you primarily use your devices for basic tasks like word processing and o ine activities, your risk might be lower compared to heavy internet users or those who frequently download les from the internet.

Safe Practices: Practicing safe browsing habits, such as avoiding suspicious websites, not clicking on unknown links, and being cautious with email attachments, can reduce the likelihood of encountering malware. However, even with safe practices, there is still a risk, as attackers are constantly nding new ways to exploit vulnerabilities.

In general, it's recommended to have antivirus software installed on your devices, especially if you frequently engage in online activities or have a Windows system. Make sure to choose a reputable antivirus solution, keep it up to date, and regularly scan your devices for potential threats. Additionally, maintaining regular backups of your important les is another important practice to mitigate the impact of malware.

In loving memory of VALENTINE ALLISTER of Maple Court, Tralee. 11

February 1922 – 21 July 2014

“The sun goes down but gentle warmth

Still lingers on the land.

The music stops and yet it lingers on In sweet refrain.

For every joy that passes

Something beautiful remains.”

Dear Val,

You have been a caring husband, father and friend, we shall never forget your gentleness and kindness, your velvet baritone voice, your laughter and tremendous passion for life.

It has been 9 years since your generous and loving heart stopped forever.

Even though you had a long life full of achievements, love and friendship, to us it still feels that it wasn’t long enough.

Like the sun you filled our lives with the light and warmth. Your nurturing nature, wisdom and compassion helped us to face life’s challenges with confidence. Your love, care and integrity gave us the strength to grow to be better people.

Your passion and knowledge of classical music made us appreciate the beauty of art. Hearing you sing filled everyone’s hearts with joy and we miss it very much. We are thankful to you for these eternal gifts that stay with us even after your passing.

The years without you were often difficult but your unseen support helped us along the way. In our hearts and prayers your memory always stays alive and not a day goes by when we don’t think of you.

“We think of you in silence

We often speak your name

Your hand we cannot touch

But your memory is our keepsake

With which we’ll never part.

God has you in his keeping

We have you in our hearts.”

Your wife Nadia, children Veronika and Roman and all your friends. Memorial mass to mark the ninth anniversary of Val Allister will be held on Friday 21 of July in St John’s Church in Tralee and on Sunday, 23 July at 11am, a mass will be dedicated to his memory in Dominican Church in Yalta, Crimea. We greatly appreciate all our friends for your sympathy and for taking time to remember Val in your prayers on this day and sharing in our remembrance of his life.
