AND NOW FOR THE GOOD NEWS... from The Tralee Advertiser Team and Tralee Chamber Alliance

Gowns of Glory Exhibition By Georgie Downes

With Kerry winning the All Ireland Football Final and the phenomenal Home Coming parade on Denny Street last Monday, it seems the Kingdom cup is truly overflowing. But there’s more good news. The Rose of Tralee festival just around the corner which means there’s still a week of activities and celebrations to look forward to before the kids go back to school, starting off with the Gowns of Glory Exhibition at the Kerry County Museum, a magnificent display of the beautiful dresses worn

by the Roses throughout the decades. The exhibition also details the emotional, sometimes funny and always entertaining stories behind the dresses with videos and audio adding to the overall experience. Initially, the Roses either made their own dresses or bought off-the-rack but when RTE got involved in 1978, designers began to realise the potential of one of the nation’s mostwatched TV programmes and having your dress featured became a much-sought

honour. The exhibition highlights female fashion trends through the years; some are very much of their time with the 1980s puffy sleeves and flouncy skirts while later styles evolved into more understated, sleeker designs. But they all tell their own story. The dress worn by 2006 Rose Kathryn Feeney, for example, was originally intended as her bridesmaid's gown for her sister's wedding,

until the bride eloped to a tropical island. A replica of the dress worn by first ever Rose, Alice O'Sullivan, is also on display it is the only knee-length dress in the collection. All the others - excluding that of Maria Walsh, which was a midi dress - are full length. Pop along to see them all for yourself. The exhibition is running right now and entrance is free.

THE TEAM AT THE CLINIC ARE HERE TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS ON COSMETIC AND HAIR RESTORATION ISSUES. Can you tell me about the treatment by friend is doing for her eyes at lunchtime?

Teresa.

The Lunchtime Lift eye treatment is very popular at CHRC. This is a non-invasive skin tightening treatment which targets the signs of ageing around the eyes. This treatment is great for improving the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, crow’s feet and sagging skin around the eyes. This treatment uses MP2 radio-frequency technology to naturally boost the production of collagen below the skin’s surface. This treatments works to tighten the skin, diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and restore a more youthful-looking appearance. This treatment is suitable for you if you’re starting to notice the signs of ageing around your eyes and is definitely youranswer to fresher and more youthful looking eyes. During the treatment you will feel a warm sensation, however, it is quite a relaxing treatment and often clients have a little sleep. The number of sessions required depends on the individual. However, for optimum results we recommend between 8-10 treatments. A one to one consultation is required with our Aesthetic Practitioner before your treatment and the number of treatments you require will then be discussed with you.

Keep your Business in Tralee and keep Tralee in Business!

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! TROPHY WIFE Bob, a 70-year-old, extremely wealthy widower shows up at the Country Club with a breathtakingly beautiful 25 year-old blonde who knocks everyone’s socks off with her youthful looks and charm. She hangs onto Bob’s arm and listens intently to his every word. His buddies at the club are all aghast. At the very first chance, they corner him and ask, “Bob, how did you get the trophy girlfriend?” Bob replies, “Girlfriend? She’s my wife!” They’re amazed, but continue to ask. “So, how did you persuade her to marry you?” “I lied about my age”, Bob replies. “What, did you tell her you were only 50?” Bob smiles and says, “No, I told her I was 90.”

MY WIFE WON’T LIKE IT

HOW DOES AN APPLE WATCH OWNER KNOW THAT IT’S MIDDAY? It’s already run out of battery.

THE NOTE I came home from the golf course today, and found a note my wife had left on the refrigerator. IT’S NOT WORKING. I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE. GONE TO STAY WITH MY SISTER I opened the fridge. The light came on. The beer was cold. What the HELL is she talking about?

ROY HODGSON IS ON THE JONATHAN ROSS SHOW

One day I accidentally overturned my golf buggy. Elizabeth, a very attractive and keen golfer, who lived in a villa on the golf course, heard the noise and called out, Are you okay, what’s your name?” “Its Jack , and I’m Okay thanks,” I replied. “Jack , forget your troubles. Come to my villa, rest a while, and I’ll help you get the cart up later.” “That’s mighty nice of you,” I answered, but I don’t think my wife would like it.” “Oh, come on,” Elizabeth insisted. She was very pretty and persuasive... I was weak. “Well okay,” I finally agreed, and added, “but my wife won’t like it.”

Afterwards the host takes his guest down to the local pub. They leave the pub completely smashed and Roy and Jonathan decide to break into a distillery. Roy is the first to open a cask, tastes it, and asks Jonathan, “Is this whiskey?”

After a restorative brandy, and some creative putting lessons, I thanked my host. “I feel a lot better now, but I know my wife is going to be really upset.” “Don’t be silly! Elizabeth said with a smile, She won’t know anything. By the way, where is she?” “Under the cart!”

EASTER JOKE

I WAS DIGGING A HOLE IN MY BACKYARD... I was digging a hole in my backyard when I found a box filled with gold coins. In my excitement I ran back in the house to tell my wife when I remembered why I was digging a hole.

Jonathan replies, “Not as wisky as wobbing a bank!”

WHY DO SCUBA DIVERS ALWAYS FALL BACKWARDS INTO THE WATER? If they fell forward they’d still be in the boat.

This rooster wakes up early Easter Sunday morning. He sticks his head out of the chicken coop, and sees all these multicolored eggs all over the barnyard. He takes a look at the eggs, takes a look at the hens, takes another look at the eggs, takes one more look at the hens, he thinks about it for a minute, then he walks across the barnyard and smashes the peacock.

Brain Health As we age our brain starts to slow down and lose nerve cells, but there are a number of things we can do to keep sharp. Looking after our brains as we age is important, as is keeping our bones and heart healthy. Some foods can negatively affect brain cells while others can positively boost your grey matter. High consumption of added sugar, alcohol and processed foods can all have a negative impact on our brain. A diet of fresh fruit, vegetables, protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats can give our mind and brain the nutrients it needs for optimal health. There is also a huge link between brain and gut health so taking a good quality Probiotic every couple of months will ensure the good bacteria in your gut is protected. Some foods to include in your diet which can benefit your brain health include: Avocado, Beetroot, Dark chocolate with a high cocoa content, organic Coconut oil, Eggs, Green tea, spices such as Turmeric. Some of the best brain supplements you will find in your local HORANS HEALTHSTORE include: OMEGA 3 FISH OIL...choose one that is high in DHA to benefit your cognitive health LECITHIN...which contains CHOLINE, a chemical your brain uses to communicate.

There are reams of analysis already written so there is no need for me to add to that save to saw winning a game as tough as last Sunday against a very tough Galway side makes the victory even sweeter. Having the final in July was certainly a novel idea and while it certainly didn’t dampen the homecoming in any way with huge crowds in Killarney and Tralee it does mean that the traditional visit to the schools in the week following the final is a thing of the past. But I am sure Sam will be on a tour of primary schools in September and this will be celebrated as wildly as ever by the future generations of players. Kerry players will now turn their attention to their clubs but will also need a break and no doubt be looking forward to the team holiday in December. Knowing these players a One in A Row won’t satisfy them and they will be ready to go again in 2023. However for the pleasure they have given us in 2022 we say a huge thank-you to the players, Jack, his management and backroom staff. Girls Date with Destiny: The Kerry Ladies are one step away for a rare double and getting their hands on the Brendan Martin Cup. They reached the decider with a very impressive 4-10 to 0-13 point win over Mayo. And waiting from them this Sunday are defending champions Meath who were pushed all the way by Donegal before prevailing 0-12 to 1-07. Meath will be the favourites but Kerry’s ability to score goals by different players could be vital in a game that can go either way. It has been a great year for the Kerry Ladies squad and management and they will be giving it everything to finish off with the biggest prize of all. Masters one step away from the decider: We could have a third Kerry team in an All Ireland decider as the Kerry Masters continued their great run in this inaugural year of the competition. Their latest win came over Kildare 0-13 to 0-09 to qualify for the All Ireland semi-final where their opponents are still unknown. HURLING DECIDER LINE-UP DECIDED: For Kerry hurling fans the County Senior final is one of their most anticipated days of the year. Causeway went all the way to extra time before defeating reigning champions Kilmoyley 3-21 to 1-25 in a cracker where they looked in trouble at

20

one stage. Causeway will now face Ballyduff in the big game which will take place on August 7th in Austin Stack Park. Ian steps down: The Kerry camogie girls are looking for a new manager as Ian Brick has stepped down after four very successful years in charge where winning the All Ireland Premier Junior title in Croke Park was the highlight. IMPERIALS BECOME MAGIC: Tralee Imperials will now be known as Tralee Magic BC as the club continues to go from strength to strength. Under the Imperials banner the club has been very successful on local and national courts as well as seeing members go on to play in the Irish jersey and in the SuperLeague. Chair John Dowling, at the AGM, thanked everyone that has done so much work with the club over the last 20 years and said that the new name of Tralee Magic provides plenty of sponsorship opportunities which are relied on to support the running of the club. On the Court: It is turning out to be a very impressive summer of Kerry basketball players and coaches on the international stage. The Irish Men’s u20’s, coached by Paudie Fleming and with ex Tralee players Rapolas Buivydas and Leeroy Odiahi on the squad, won 5 out of their 6 games in their European B Championship over the past two weeks finishing 9th overall. Aivaras Uosis is away with the U18 Men, Aoife Nolan is managing the u18 women and Leah McMahon is with the Irish u16 women as all sides build-up to their Euros. TRALEE BOXING CLUB NEWS: The club’s second Summer Camp took place this week which everyone involved really enjoyed. The camp had kids from all backgrounds who had lots of fun in an inclusive environment. The club thanks EF Signs and the Brand Geeks who helped them out during the week as well as all the volunteers who were involved. Tralee Boxing Club has an opening for a coach with the position paid as part of their CE scheme with details from Pat (0861942824) or Lynda (0877663406). Morning classes are on Fridays at 7am for 1 hour costing e7 and the Ladies Only class on Sunday from 4pm also costing e7. TRALEE MANOR WEST BC LEAGUE TITLE STILL UP FOR GRABS: Round 5 of the League was won by Cathal Moynihan, the 5th different winner from the 5 rounds. This means that the title will go down to the last round where Joe Roche and Vincent O’Leary will do battle for club bragging rights over the TT Course. THREE LEAGUE OF IRELAND TEAMS AT HOME: All three League of Ireland sides are at home this weekend. On Saturday the

14’s are at home to Waterford at 2pm while the 17’s take on Sligo Rovers at 3pm. On Sunday the 19’s take on Bray Wanderers from 2pm. ST PAT’S NEWS: All those who haven’t registered are asked to do so as soon as possible. The Club was delighted with the way the Cul Camp went and a special thanks to all the organisers and coaches. The Academy are on a break for two weeks. The St Brendan’s Minors played East Kerry last Monday and put up a good battle before East Kerry pushed ahead and too the League. The Seniors begin their campaign in the Kerry Petroleum Junior Premier Club Championship. The club are in Group 1 with Skellig Rangers, Churchill and St Senan’s. Round 1 is at Connolly Park against Churchill on July 30th at 7pm. Congratulations to Kasey McCormack Camp who is the newly crowned Miss Kerry, she will represent Kerry in the Final in Castlebar on the 20th of August. PARNELL’S NEWS: The u7’s enjoyed their games with Kilmoyley and congratulations to Liam Brick and Rian Quinn who were the Players of the Week. The u8’s were at the Abbeykillix Blitz and showed how far they have come on. The u10’s enjoyed the Crotta O’Neills Blitz while the u12’s played Sliabh Luachra in the County League and came away with a good win. In a busy evening at Caherslee the minor camogie side played their first game against Causeway who took the win 1-08 to 2-02 but the home side , despite having a number of u16’s, put in a very good showing. Parnells Intermediate side went down to Kilgarvan 3-13 to 0-16 points in their quarter final. The club thanks Claire Murphy from Expose Beauty Salon in Mounthawk who sponsored a new set of jerseys for the u12 hurlers. The club thanks all those who were involved in the Summer Camp. In the Lotto there was no winner from the numbers drawn 15, 16, 21 or 22. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: The next game for the seniors is on August 7th versus Dr Crokes in the Senior Club Championship with the game on in Desmond’s at 1pm. There will be lots of Rahillys club people in Croke Park this Sunday to cheer on the Kerry Ladies and hopefully see them take the Brendan Martin Cup. The Minor Ladies will play in the Blitz in Ballyvourney on Saturday, August 20th. The u13 Girls really enjoyed the Sandra Keane Invitational Tournament defeating Ballyduff and Desmond’s but went out in the semi-final to Listowel Emmets. The u14 Girls won the County League B Cup final defeating Rathmore. Lotto – there was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 8,10,11 and 20 with the next jackpot e7,300. STACKS NEWS: While all clubs are delighted with the Kerry win it was even more special for Tralee’s Black and Amber with Joe O’Connor being captain and brining the club home on Tuesday evening. The Summer Camp runs from Tuesday August 2nd to Saturday 9th from 9.30am to 12.30am and cost e50 per player and e80 per family. The Rock All Stars are back training this Sunday at Connolly Park from 10amand new participants are always welcome. The All Stars is for all players with a diagnosis.

All the underage teams train as normal this week. The u13’s are getting ready for the Town League where the club will enter two teams while the 15’s are at the semi-final stage. Next for the Seniors is the Club Championship where the boys are in with Dr Crokes, Kerins O’Rahillys and Templenoe in Group b of two four team groups. On the 7th of August they will play Templenoe at 1pm at the Legion pitch. The B’s lost to Rahillys in the Tralee/St Brendan’s League. There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 8, 13, 17 and 29. IN THE WATER: Well done to Elaine Burrows Dillane who has completed the Bristol Channel Swim over 27 plus km in 12 hours 52 minutes. Well done also to coach Kevin Williams and her back up team. Locally it was the fourth swim of the Summer series where Gerard Pierce was the fastest stopping the clock in 21.13. Second was Eoin Cahill (21.43), third Padraig Kelly (21.50) with Gavin Quinlivan in 4th and Michelle Hoare 5th. KINGDOM SWIMMING CLUB NOTES: The Kingdom Swimming club enjoyed a good outing at the Irish Summer National Championships that took place at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin. The 5 swimmers – Rory Boyd, Cian Mason, Peter Doyle, Marie O’Sullivan and Evelyn Fox – accompanied by head coach Ger McDonnell and assistants Tim and Mike O’Connell qualified for 9 finals and achieved 12 PB’s across a number of events. KINGDOM WHEELBLASTERS OPEN DAY: The Kingdom Wheelblasters held a very enjoyable Open Day at the Kerry Sports Academy. As part of the day they presented the certs for the Junior Blitz. The Wheelblasters will now take a break before getting ready for the new season which begins in September. ON THE GREENS TRALEE GC: It was a quiet weekend on the competitions front at the Tralee Golf Club. On Wednesday the Ladies Stableford took place with Eilish O’Loughlin taking the win on 43 points with Paula O’Sullivan in second on 36 points and Elizabeth Lynch third with 34 points. Mark’s the Man: As we were on a week off last week we missed the chance to congratulate Mark Gazi on his big win. The golfer won the McGregor Cup in the UK. PITCH AND PUTT NOTES: Well done to the eight u16 players who will be making their Inter-County debut during the month of August. The Gold side is made up of Brian McCarthy, Noah Sexton, Nathan Cronin and Ajay Barrett. The Green side is Ben Kelliher, Jayden Chute, Daniel Leahy and Dylan Sweeney. Dara Browne and Trevan Chute are the two subs named. The Munster’s are on in Cunnigar, Dungarvan on August 5th while the nationals are in Deerpark, Killarney on August 20th. One for the diary is the Listowel Scratch Cup on Bank Holiday Monday with the timesheet open in the club.

IN NEWS MEMORY

In loving memory of VALENTINE ALLISTER of Maple Court, Tralee.

Tralee

SNOOKER Club

11 February 1922 – 21 July 2014 “The special years will not return. When we were all together, But with the love within our hearts You will walk with us forever.” Dear Val, You have been a caring husband, father and friend, we shall never forget your gentleness and kindness, your velvet baritone, your laughter and tremendous passion for life. Last week it was eight years since your generous and loving heart stopped forever. Even though you had a long life full of achievements, love and friendship, to us it still feels that it wasn’t long enough. The years without you were often difficult but your unseen support helped us along the way. In our hearts and prayers your memory always stays alive and not a day goes by when we don’t think of you. «Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.» Your wife Nadia, children Veronika and Roman and all your friends. On Thursday 21 of July was 8th anniversary of Val's passing. Memorial mass was held on that day in St John's Church in Tralee and on Sunday, 24 July at 11am, a mass was dedicated to his memory in Dominican Church in Yalta, Crimea. We greatly appreciate all our friends for your sympathy and for taking time to remember Val in your prayers on this day and sharing in our remembrance of his life.
