Minister Foley welcomes new scheme to support the economic development of the inshore fishing fleet

Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley has announced a new scheme to support the economic development of the inshore fishing fleet. This initiative aims to gather detailed market information and help inshore fishers access new markets.

The scheme, confirmed by Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue, will assist inshore fishers in addressing market challenges. It involves a survey of inshore fishers, with participants receiving payments for their involvement. The survey will be conducted in two stages, and payments will be based on vessel length, ranging from €3,500 for vessels under 8m to €5,000 for vessels between 8 and 17.99m.

Minister Foley emphasized the importance of this scheme for

Kerry’s inshore fishers, who operate from various piers and harbors with boats typically under 12 meters. She noted the scheme’s role in ensuring the economic viability of the inshore fleet.

The initial payment of €2,000 will be made upon completing Stage 1 of the survey, with the remaining balance provided after Stage 2. The scheme will be implemented by Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) and funded under the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund, with applications opening in September 2024.

Minister McConalogue highlighted the significance of the new scheme, which complements existing initiatives like the Inshore Fisheries Scheme and the V-notching Scheme for lobster conservation. These efforts collectively support inshore

fishers in developing markets and securing fair prices for their catch. Details about the scheme will be

Minister Foley welcomes expansion

Minister for Education and Kerry

TD Norma Foley has welcomed the expansion of the Hot School Meals programme to a further 12 Kerry schools.

The scheme was first set up in 2019 with a pilot of 30 schools but has now expanded to almost 2,200 primary schools.

Around 69 primary schools in Kerry are currently operating the Hot School Meals programme and this is now being extended to a further 12 primary schools in the county.

Minister Foley said:

“The Hot School Meals Programme has been a tremendous success and it is fantastic that it has now been expanded to another 12 primary schools in Kerry.

We now have almost 2,200 primary schools on the programme and all remaining schools can apply to join for the next school year in September.

The programme is known to facilitate better education outcomes and I know that today’s announcement will be welcomed by many parents and families.”

The latest expansion of the Hot School Meals programme brings the total number of primary school children now eligible for it every day to 345,000. There are 8,984 children in Co. Kerry currently benefitting from free hot school meals and the addition of 12 more schools to the programme will increase this even further.

The Department of Social Protection provides the funding to schools for the School Meals Programme, and it is the responsibility of schools to choose their supplier in an open, fair and transparent manner in accordance with national legislation and EU directives on procurement.

The Department of Social Protection has this year contacted all of the

remaining Primary Schools who have not yet joined the Hot School Meals scheme asking them to submit expressions of interest in commencing the provision of Hot School Meals. Heather Humphreys,

the Minister for Social Protection, has said that the responses will be reviewed with the aim of including more schools subject to available funding in Budget 2025.

Join up now for the Big Beach Clean 2024: supported by Kia Ireland

The Big Beach Clean 2024 is back, and Clean Coasts is calling on volunteers to register for the campaign, running from September 20th to 22nd. This year’s initiative is proudly supported by Kia Ireland. In 2023, over 400 groups with 7,700 Clean Coasts volunteers removed 46 tonnes of litter across the country. Let’s continue pushing for positive change in 2024.

Participants will receive all necessary materials to conduct a successful beach clean and a marine litter survey, using Marine Litter Data Cards or the Clean Swell App. As part of the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup, efforts in Ireland will contribute to global data and influence environmental policies worldwide. By participating and submitting data on the types and quantities of litter collected, volunteers will help amplify Ireland’s voice globally. Past data has informed national

campaigns like “Bin the Butt” and “Break Up With Plastic.” Globally, this data has driven significant policy changes, including bans on plastic items like bags and straws and laws prohibiting smoking on beaches.

Bronagh Moore, An Taisce’s Clean Coasts Manager, stated, “Registrations for the Big Beach Clean 2024 are now open. Every piece of litter removed and reported contributes to cleaner beaches and impactful campaigns for healthier oceans. Your participation amplifies Ireland’s voice in the global effort to protect our oceans, demonstrating how local actions lead to significant global impacts. Join us in making a difference!”

Cathal Kealey, Head of Marketing & PR at Kia Ireland, added, “We

are on a journey towards Carbon Neutrality, using recycled materials in vehicle production, including ocean waste. By 2030, 20% of our vehicle plastics will come from recycled materials. Kia Ireland is delighted to sponsor the Big Beach Clean 2024.

One Moment for One Crew: RNLI Fenit

On Thursday 1 August, RNLI representatives from Fenit participated in a special photo moment – One Moment for One Crew – to create a photographic record of those involved with the lifesaving charity in this, its 200th anniversary year.

The RNLI has been saving lives at sea for 200 years thanks to its incredible people – the courageous lifeboat crews who put their own lives at risk to save others; the dedicated fundraisers who raise the income to power those rescues; the committed volunteers who give their own time in a range of other roles such as giving out water safety advice and the staff who provide vital support to our volunteers.

Fenit RNLI had six volunteers who have given in excess of 30 years voluntary service and many who have given 20 years service. The service has also welcomed

many new crew members who are currently undergoing extensive training.

In remembering the entire cohort of volunteers who have given any service whatsoever, including our colleagues who are no longer with us, Finbarr O’Connell Coxwain, poignantly read the RNLI pledge and dedicated it to all involved. The pledge reads:

‘Whoever we are, wherever we are from, we are one crew, ready to save lives. We’re powered by passion, talent and kindness, like generations of selfless lifesavers before us. This is our watch, we lead the way, valuing each other, trusting each other, depending on one another, volunteering to face the storm together. Knowing that, with courage, nothing is impossible. That is what has always driven us to save everyone we can. It’s what makes every one of us a lifesaver.’

The most recent callout attended by the service was a six-hour mission where the all weather lifeboat assisted a large vessel back beyond Ballydavid, Dingle resulting in ensuring all onboard and the vessel was towed to safety back to Fenit Harbour.

Mike O’Connor, Fenit RNLI Fundraising Lead, said “I have said for many years that there is fierce good will towards the RNLI

Volunteer Service”. We are very grateful to all involved as we mark this historical event and especially the turning of the 3rd century for an organisation that so many people appreciate”.

Voluntary Crew: Cian Lawless, Kevin Deady, Denise Lynch, Finbarr O’Connell, John J. Moriarty, Terry Sheehgy, Kevin Moriarty, Des Sugrue.

‘Kingdom backed for Rose of Tralee Crown ‘ ...says Boyles Sports

County Kerry might have reason to celebrate this month as local representative Emer Dineen is the early 7/2 favorite with BoyleSports to win the Rose of Tralee festival. It’s been 60 years since Tralee Rose Margaret O’Keeffe won the event. Now, the 23-year-old Kerry Rose, Emer Dineen, brings an impressive resume to the Dome. A University College Dublin graduate, she is a Radiographer who has worked as a lifeguard in Castlegregory and Ballyheigue. Currently, she is a Paediatric Radiographer at Dublin’s Temple Street Hospital and is learning Irish Sign Language to

improve her communication skills. A home win would extend Galway’s long wait for a Rose of Tralee victory, which dates back to before their last All-Ireland Senior Football title. Galway’s representative, social worker Deirdre Jennings, enjoys attending art classes and faces 20/1 odds to win, aiming to surpass the county’s football achievements this year.

Dublin, after an early exit in the football race, hopes for a different outcome with 24-year-old singer Casey Harris, who stands at 20/1 to become the first Dublin winner since 2003.

Derry’s Darcy Taylor has seen early support, making her the 4/1 second favorite, while Sligo Rose Megan McCormack, a substitute primary school teacher and Gaelic football enthusiast, is the 6/1 third favorite. This year’s contestants will showcase a variety of talents, including Irish dancers, singers, and even a bagpiper. Donegal Rose Niamh Shevlin, one half of the world champion Irish dancing duo the Shevlin twins, is also in the mix at 12/1.

BoyleSports spokesperson Lawrence Lyons commented, “Kerry Rose Emer Dineen’s lifeguard

Casement Landing Commemoration 2024

experience and strong resume make her a popular early pick. With talents like bagpipes and Irish dancing on stage, judges have a lot of talent to consider.”

At 3pm on Saturday next, 10th August, a gathering of people will take place at McKenna’s Fort (now called Lios Mhic Easmainn), in Ardfert, to remember and commemorate the life and times of Roger Casement who arrived at the coast of Kerry in a German submarine, the U19, on Good Friday 1916 with Robert Monteith (who had done 16 years’ service in the British Army in India and in South Africa) and Daniel Bailey (who had served for 9 years in the British Army in India and Burma and who, later, in August 1914, landed in France, was wounded, captured and imprisoned at a POW camp).

Speakers at Saturday’s Roger Casement Gathering in Ardfert will be Dr Tim Horgan, historian and author, and Mícheál Ó Ruairc, author and poet. Tionól Mhic Easmainn agus Conradh na Gaeilge (Trá Lí) atá i mbun eagraithe. Fáilte roimh chách.

Austin Stacks GAA Launches New and Novel Quid Game Fundraiser

Excitement filled the clubhouse at Connolly Park on Friday evening as a new and novel fundraising initiative, the Austin Stacks GAA Quid Game Event, was officially launched. This thrilling event, inspired by the hit Netflix series “Squid Game,” is scheduled to take place on 25th October 2024 in the Ballyroe Hotel, Tralee.

Quid Game, powered by ClubSpot Events, is designed to deliver all the excitement and suspense of the original series, minus the intense violence. Participants will engage in a series of six skill-based games that test their accuracy, endurance, and hand-eye coordination. The competition promises an adrenaline-

pumping experience for all involved. Local and neighbouring club members from across the country are invited to compete for an impressive cash prize of €10,000. The winner will also have the unique opportunity to donate part or all of their winnings to a club or charity of their choice. Austin Stacks GAA’s new initiative aims to provide an unforgettable experience for participants while offering local businesses and clubs a fantastic opportunity to give back to their community. By involving a wide range of participants and spectators, the event is expected to foster a sense of unity and support within the community.

Kerry Meals on Wheels and Day Centres

Minister for Education and Kerry

T.D, Norma Foley, has welcomed the eligibility for up to 38 Centres in County Kerry to apply for funding for older persons Day Centre and Meals on Wheels Community Care services.

This scheme is being introduced by Fianna Fail Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly and Fianna Fail Minister for Older People Mary Butler and will be available to support around 400 Section 39 community organisations across the country by providing extra financial support of up to €25,000 per organisation. The funding is designed to support improvements

to the physical premises for Day Centres and Meals on Wheels services.

It can be used to upgrade kitchens and other facilities, and to purchase equipment. Since its establishment, the Meals on Wheels service has been vital to many communities across the country, providing approximately 2.7 million meals last year.

Speaking on the availability of this funding, Minister Foley said: “I am delighted to receive confirmation from my party colleagues, Minister Donnelly and Minister Butler that so many community organisations are eligible to apply for this funding. This

funding can go towards improving many Day Centres who may need upgrades to their facilities and will help these centres cater for the needs of people who avail of their services.”

“Older person Day Centres and Meals on Wheels services are such a vital service for so many, and many people rely on it. They offer a safe and welcoming environment where people can access these essential services as well as allowing people to engage in social activities.”

“People want to be able to live at home for longer, and that doesn’t always mean care in their home. For people to have access to these Day

Centres and essential services, it gives them a sense of purpose, social interaction, and a safe environment to meet friends.”

“Government have almost doubled funding for the national Meals on Wheels service from over €3 million in 2022 to over €6 million this year. I would encourage all eligible centres in Kerry to apply for this funding.”

Plenty of goals as Kerry split the points

On Friday evening, Kerry FC played their third consecutive away game against Athlone Town in the Midlands. After a narrow 2-0 defeat to Cork City, Kerry FC aimed to secure more points, having only garnered two out of a possible twelve since their 2-1 victory over Longford Town on June 13. Kerry FC announced the departures of Daire McCarthy and Kevin Williams but were bolstered by the return of Cian Barrett from Shamrock Rovers on loan until the season’s end. Barrett, who excelled last season, was included in the starting lineup alongside Oran Crowe and Finn Barrett.

First Half

Nathan Gleeson nearly scored early, but his shot was saved by Lee Axworthy. Athlone’s Dylan Hand

and Dean Ebbe had close attempts, but Aaron O’Sullivan kept the score level. Athlone took the lead in the 33rd minute with a deflected goal by former Kerry player Leo Gaxha. Kerry responded quickly, with Oran Crowe scoring his first goal for the club five minutes later. Just before halftime, Kerry took the lead with a goal from captain Andy Spain, following a well-delivered corner by Cian Brosnan.

Second Half

Athlone started the second half with some chances, but Kerry defended well. Bobby Amadasun debuted, replacing Finn Barrett. Kerry extended their lead in the 57th minute with a penalty from Ryan Kelliher after Dylan Hand’s handball. Athlone nearly scored in the 63rd minute, but O’Sullivan made a

crucial save.

Kerry maintained control, nearly adding a fourth goal through Daniel Okwute. However, Athlone pulled one back with Brian Torre’s goal and equalized shortly after with Dylan Hand’s strike from a corner. Despite

Kerry’s efforts to secure a win, the game ended in a 3-3 draw.

Kerry FC now looks forward to returning home to face Cobh Ramblers at Mounthawk Park next Friday, continuing their search for three points.
