Corcoran’s Furniture & Carpets Ltd. Celebrate Their 25th Anniversary With An U7’S Football Blitz In Cahersiveen

Corcoran’s Furniture & Carpets Ltd. marked their 25th Anniversary in grand style at their Cahersiveen store on Friday, August 16, 2024, with a special U7’s football blitz. This location holds sentimental value as it was the first store Corcoran’s opened, just after Puck Fair in 1999. Now, with five stores across Cahersiveen, Tralee, Killarney, and Newcastle West, the company has grown significantly.

The anniversary event was lively, with over 100 young footballers from various clubs in Co. Kerry,

including St. Mary’s, Waterville, Laune Rangers, Skellig Rangers, Renard, Valentia, Foilmore, St. Michael’s, and Dromid, participating in the blitz held on the grounds of the Cahersiveen store. DJ Ed provided the music, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Kieran Corcoran, Owner and Managing Director, delivered a heartfelt speech, reflecting on the journey from their first store to becoming a recognized name in the region. The event was graced by Kerry’s Ladies Football Goalkeeper

and 2024 All-Ireland Medallist, Mary Ellen Bolger, who presented medals to all the young participants. Each child also received a goodie bag filled with treats, making the day even more special.

Adding to the community spirit, members of Sive Rowing Club Cahersiveen raised funds for their club by offering snacks, beverages, and face painting, which delighted the children.

Kieran Corcoran expressed gratitude to the local community and the team at Corcoran’s for their support over

the years, emphasizing the special place the Cahersiveen store holds in the company’s history. He also hinted at more 25th Anniversary celebrations planned throughout the year, which will be shared via Corcoran’s social media.

The day was a true testament to the strong community spirit in Kerry and Corcoran’s commitment to serving the region for many more years to come.

Due to an EU regulatory change regarding certain security screening equipment, the following LAGS rules will come into effect at Kerry Airport from September 1st 2024.

1. Only LAGS in containers of 100ml or less can be brought through security – these can stay inside your cabin bag and there are no restrictions on the number of containers or type of LAG (provided they are not dangerous goods) – they do not have to be in a plastic bag

2. We will accept LAGS in containers over 100ml but these must fall into the category of baby foods/milk, medicines or special dietary requirements – these must be presented at the screening point outside of your cabin bag but do not have to be in a plastic bag – they will be subject to additional screening after they have passed through the x-ray equipment.

3. All other LAGS in containers over 100ml, aside from point 2 above, will be rejected and you will be asked to surrender them at the screening point for disposal.

If you have LAGS that fall into the category of point 3 above, then please ensure they are packed into your hold baggage or else do not bring them. It’s important to note that the screening equipment itself, which is of a high quality, is not in question and also that the European Commission are not acting on any new threat information, but rather they are responding as a precautionary measure to a temporary technical issue that has been identified. We expect to resume allowing all LAGS to remain inside cabin baggage at some stage in 2025.

Taoiseach Simon Harris opens new N69 Listowel Bypass

The Taoiseach, Simon Harris TD, has officially opened the new Listowel Bypass which will divert 7,000 vehicles per day away from Listowel town centre and which will greatly enhance infrastructure and accessibility in north Kerry.

The €62m N69 Listowel Bypass is a six-kilometre western and northern bypass of Listowel town centre and consists of approximately 3.6km of new road, 2.3km of online improvement of the existing network and 1.5km of new roundabouts and improvements at junctions.

The Taoiseach was joined at the official opening by the Cathaoirleach and Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, the Chief Executive of Transport Infrastructure Ireland and

local landowners who facilitated the construction of the road.

Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Breandán Fitzgerald described it a historic day for the county: ‘Traffic congestion in Listowel has long been identified as hampering transport and commercial activity. The bypass will divert some 250 heavy goods vehicles away from the town centre each day which will also greatly enhance the safety of motorists and pedestrians in the town.’

Taoiseach Simon Harris said: ‘This new road is a major boost for north Kerry in terms of transport, accessibility, commercial activity and tourism. It greatly improves movement across the region including along the busy N69

road between Listowel and Limerick. My government is committed to delivering projects such as this across the country with the support of local authorities and Transport Infrastructure Ireland.’

Chief Executive Transport Infrastructure Ireland, Peter Walsh said: ‘The official opening of the N69 Listowel Bypass highlights the ongoing improvements being made to the national road network in County Kerry by Transport Infrastructure Ireland and Kerry County Council. This project offers road safety benefits as well as improved regional accessibility. There is a quality-oflife improvement for the residents and businesses of Listowel with the reduction of unnecessary through

traffic. Reducing unnecessary HGV traffic alone by nearly 50%, whilst supporting those HGV drivers that deliver goods and services throughout country by providing a section of national road built to a modern engineering standard.’

The designers of the scheme were Jacobs Engineering (Dublin) and the main contractor was Wills Brothers (Mayo). The project was overseen by the Kerry National Roads Office (Kerry County Council).

College in Tralee...

6th cheapest in Ireland

Soaring living costs have put increased pressure on hard-pressed students, who are now spending even more on accommodation and day-to-day living. One in five young people is reported to be skipping meals in 2024 to save money.* Switcher.ie’s ’Student Cost of Living Guide 2024 reveals the cheapest student towns in Ireland, up-to-date expenses in each place, and how much student costs have jumped in the past year. The study aims to help students, parents, teachers, and third-level organisations prepare for the year ahead and determine what they might need to budget, save, or borrow. In 2024, it costs €15,602 per year to go to college in Tralee, 4% or €674 more per year than 2023. Tralee remained the sixth cheapest student county this year, costing €3,926 less per year than Dublin, the most expensive town. Overall, students eligible for free tuition fees can expect to spend an average of €15,632 on college in 2024 — €536 more per year than in 2023. International students could fork out an average of €26,690 per annum, €924 more than last year.

Minister Foley officially opens new 5km walking trail at Ballyseedy Woods

Minister for Education and Kerry TD has today officially opened the new 5km walking trail at Ballyseedy Woods.

This new trail on the northern side of the River Lee links to existing trails in the woods with the aid of two new bridges. It was created on land donated by the McGillicuddy family, the owners of the nearby Ballygarry House and Spa, to create a superb countryside attraction for locals and visitors.

This project was made possible by grant funding of €200,000 from the Department of Rural and Community Development’s outdoor recreational infrastructure scheme. It was also part-funded by Kerry County Council.

Minister Foley said:

“I was honoured to perform the official opening of the new 5km walking loop at Ballyseedy Woods, Tralee. A €200,000 grant from government coupled with the

generous donation of land from the McGillicuddy family and the leadership of Kerry County Council and the local community has brought this project to fruition. It is an amenity and treasure for all to enjoy.”

Minister Foley paid tribute to the Ballyseedy Wood Action Group for their vision in spotting the original potential for Ballyseedy Wood. Minister Foley also thanked Ballymacelligott Community Alert Group for their support for this project.

“This will hugely benefit the health and well-being of people of all ages and is so important in terms of attracting visitors to our towns and villages.”

Ballyseedy Wood is one of the natural treasures in Tralee and is over 400 years old. It extends to nearly 80 acres and is abundant with trees, plants, wildflowers, ferns and grasses, making it a rich habit

for animals, birds, butterflies, bees, insects, bats and fish.

It has at least 22 varieties of native trees which are marked with their Irish and English names, including majestic Ash, Oak and Beech trees which have been growing here for

centuries.

It also contains a number of ruins and follies within the wood, dating back to the 17th century including Ballyseedy House and the old mill. Funding has also been secured to further add to the trails in Ballyseedy.

Tralee Parnells hosted a successful Family Fun Day at Kingdom Greyhound Track during the Rose of Tralee festival. The highlight was the Buster Race, sponsored by Rose Travel. Though the winning ticket was unsold, Senior player Gearoid O’Doherty won the €500 prize in a draw. Over €3,000 was raised— thanks to all who participated!

U13 Camogie

Nine teams, including Tralee Parnells, competed in the inaugural U13 Rose Blitz at Caherslee last Saturday. Ballybrown won the Rose Cup, while Causeway secured the Rose Shield. A visit from the Roses and their Escorts added to the excitement. Great skills were on display, showing a bright future for Camogie.

Minor Camogie

Our Minor ladies fought hard against Causeway in the league but narrowly lost. Despite a strong first half, our small panel couldn’t hold the lead. Thanks to all involved, and congratulations to our player Emma Dunican on her Munster team’s win over Leinster.

U11 Hurling

Our U11 boys had a competitive match against Kenmare/Kilgarvan last Saturday. Thanks to all the parents who supported the team.
