I am making my way through menopause and my upper arms are getting very loose and wobbly.
I am a regular gym goer but nothing I am doing seems to be helping my arms. Is this due to menopause and what can I do to improve the situation? Sue.
Hi Sue, Menopause is associated with a natural decline in oestrogen which increases visceral fat mass and decreases bone mass density, muscle mass and strength.
Wobbly upper arms are those flaps of skin that hang down and swing along with every arm movement, also known as bingo wings. This can happen to anyone of any gender. However, since men have an average of 10 to 15 percent more muscle mass, bingo wings primarily affect women starting at a younger age.
Bingo wings can be helped with a skin tightening treatment at the CHRC in the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee. It is F.D.A. approved, painless and non-surgical with zero downtime. This procedure is powered by innovation which rejuvenates the appearance of the skin safely and comfortably by heating the tissue under the skin’s surface. This triggers the natural production of collagen and elastin, the key building blocks of healthy, tight and youthful skin. The result is an effortlessly tighter and smoother looking skin.

620 Kerry volunteers join record breaking Big Beach Clean 2022
Clean Coasts received overwhelming support and commitment from Kerry volunteers and communities for the Big Beach Clean weekend took place between 16th and 18th September.
The Big Beach Clean is an annual call to action that runs as part of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), operated internationally by Ocean Conservancy and invites communities and volunteers around the country to remove litter from around the Irish coast after the end of the bathing season. Once more, volunteers were asked to join the call to action, no matter how far from the coast. Statistics show that the number one cause of marine litter is litter dropped in towns and cities and getting involved in the Big Beach Clean has been a way for residents of non-coastal counties to help prevent litter entering our waterways tackle the problem at its source.
This year, a record number of over 500 clean-ups were organised by volunteers who removed over 63 tonnes of litter nationwide.
In Kerry, 28 groups banded together to host cleanups removing an estimated 3.5 tonnes of litter. Among these groups, we were joined by
Maharees Conservation Association, Littor Strand Clean Coasts Group, Fenit National School, Rinn Rua Beach Watch and other groups, individuals, households and businesses. These groups tackled litter in different locations such as Inch Beach, Castlegregory, Littor Strand, Fenit, Banna, Tralee, Ventry and more.
18 pupils from Fenit NS joined the Big Beach Clean on Fenit Beach, on Saturday 17th September, hosting a beach clean and filling in the Clean Coasts marine litter data card to join the International Coastal Cleanup citizen science project.
Clean Coasts group Maharees Heritage and Conservation organised a beach clean at Brandon Bay on Sunday 18th September, and were joined by volunteers from other areas and groups, including Fahamore and Kilshannig. The group covered the area between west of Clocha Dubha and the Grotto and recorded their litter data online. So far, data collected from the International Coastal Cleanup have informed policy in a number of areas, leading to laws banning the use of plastic grocery bags; prohibiting smoking-related litter; encouraging the use
of reusable bags; prohibiting mass balloon releases; and prohibiting foam food and beverage takeaway containers.
Cully and Sully supported the initiative again this year. Cullen Allen (Cully) said, ““We were delighted with yet another amazing Big Beach Clean weekend. The Clean Coasts staff and volunteers were fantastic across the weekend, although we know many are out every weekend of the year. not just Big Beach Clean weekend. So Thank You all. This is one of our favourite initiatives across the year and it was so heartwarming to see
Action from the EA Sports League of Ireland u-14s
the great turn out yet again for 2022.”
Clean Coasts and Cully and Sully have also teamed up to create some resources to help people educate themselves on which household items are recyclable, which ones aren't and how to correctly dispose of rubbish in your home as well as rubbish found on the beach. If you’re curious about recycling basics, common beach finds and how to dispose of them, what happens to our waste, stats on recycling in Ireland and more, head to recycling webpage at: https://cleancoasts.org/how-torecycle/

Family Carers Ireland Welcomes Pension Milestone
Family Carers Ireland has welcomed recent announced changes by Minister Heather Humphrey’s to the State Pension system in Ireland which will see an enhanced State Pension provision for long-term carers introduced from January 2024.
Catherine Cox, Head of Communications and Policy, Family Carers Ireland said: “The announcement today will bring some welcome comfort to many family carers. For many years we have lobbied for an equitable State Pension system that recognises rather than penalises family carers, and values the immense ‘contribution’ they make through their years of caregiving, in the same way we value social insurance ‘contributions’ paid through PRSI. We welcome the announcement of a guaranteed pension for longterm family carers who have cared for more than 20 years, and the introduction of a Total Contributions Approach which offers better protections to carers caring for shorter periods. We await clarification
on the finer details of this announcement but commend Minister Humphreys for taking this very significant positive step forward in addressing the pension anomaly that has for decades disadvantaged long term family carers.
“This reform represents an important acknowledgement of the invaluable role family carers play in our society, together with the recently announced dormant accounts funding to support carers in accessing training, education and employment. However, for those carers who cannot work or study due to their caring commitment, we sincerely hope that family carers will continue to be at the front of Government’s mind with the budget next week as they seek to address the cost-ofliving crisis and consider those most adversely affected.
“Family carers are particularly vulnerable to all types of rising costs due to the inadequacy of financial supports available to them and costs that they simply cannot cut back on without affecting the safety and comfort of the person
Tralee/St Brendan's Senior Championship Draw
At the recent CCC meeting of the Tralee/ St Brendan's Boards the draw was made for the Tralee/St Brendan's Senior Championship. The format for this year's Championship is Changed from previous years. 2 clubs are to be seeded straight to the Semi Final. These 2 clubs are Austin Stacks and Kerins O Rahilly's. The remaining 6 will contest Round 1. The Draw is and first name team has home advantage. It is Knock-out competition. Dates to follow soon. The fixtures are ; Ballymac v Churchill, Ardfert v John Mitchels, Na Gaeil v St Pat's
they care for. Many family carers have no way of meeting the rising costs and face extremely difficult decisions that are keeping them up at night. Without targeted support, too many carers and the people they care for will be pushed further into poverty, impacting their quality of life which is why we have called for the Carers Allowance to be increased to a minimum of €325 per week and for the means test to be abolished.” “We are also calling on the Government to urgently address the gross inadequacy of children’s disability
services by extending the NTPF to include psychology, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and physiotherapy.
“Family carers provide the majority of care in this country - they are a key pillar of our health service, yet they are often the forgotten frontline and many are experiencing true hardship. Without them, our health systems would collapse. The Government must recognise the vital role of family carers and ensure they deliver for them next week.”

2 New Apps to support Kerry Tourism!
The launch of two new apps in County Kerry will bring visitor experiences to life with their interactive and realistic features. Kerry Tourism Industry Federation (KTIF) celebrates their partnership at the recent official launch of the Ciar’s Quest and the Kerry Way Digital Companion apps, both giving users the opportunity to discover the Kingdom’s wildlife and historic characters through an augmented reality experience.
It comes as part of Kerry County Council’s ‘Atlantic Discovery Platform’ programme which has been significantly funded by the Department of Rural & Community Development’s Digital Innovation Programme, in partnership with Kerry Tourism Industry Federation, RDI Hub, the National Parks & Wildlife Service, Muckross House, Kerry Folklore and the South Kerry Development Partnership. These apps were developed by two Irish start-up companies, Wanderful and Imvizar, who’s aim is to enhance the use of interactive digital technologies to support tourism in Kerry.
Imvizar’s Kerry Way Digital Companion was also launched on Friday which gives users
a chance to learn about Kerry’s folklore through fun information, facts, fictional historical characters and more when they explore the Kerry Way. Users can use it on the various sites along the Iveragh walking route and at iconic attractions like Muckross House where you’ll be greeted by Queen Victoria.
Chairperson of KTIF Pat O’Leary, said: ‘Today’s launch of these two apps is a further milestone for Tourism in the county and another example of why Kerry has for decades been the country’s leading visitor destination. The use of state-of-the-art digital technology to enhance our tourism assets highlights the innovative nature of the Kerry tourism stakeholders. These apps are designed to meet the expectations of the digital generation and represent the first steps of an exciting digitalisation journey envisioned for the tourism sector in the county.’
With the National Ploughing Championships now on in County Laois this week with an expected audience of 300,000 people, KTIF has a presence at the event with their tourism brand Discover Kerry with a stand at Block 2, Row 36,
Stand 576. The stand will give visitors access to exclusive hotel break offers, as well as some surprise guest appearances throughout the week. Ciar’s Quest will also be present and give visitors the chance to win a tablet if they complete Ciar’s Quest by finding animals in various tents at the Championships. Also joining KTIF and Ciar’s Quest are Kerry Convention Bureau, Gleneagle INEC Arena,
Christmas in Killarney, Dingle Peninsula Tourism, Kerry County Museum, Killarney Great Southern, An Turas Mór, Blennerville Windmill, Tralee Bay Wetlands and Wander Wild Festival.
Kerry Tourism Industry Federation team looks forward to welcoming everyone to the Discover Kerry marquee and thanks Kerry County Council and the Tourism Stakeholders for their support.

Eu Decision To Ban Deep Sea Fishing In Irish Waters Is Good News For Ireland
A coalition of Ireland’s leading environmental nongovernmental organisations and networks says progress is beginning to be made towards protecting some of the most vulnerable ecosystems within Irish waters. Fair Seas has welcomed a decision by the European Commission to close parts of the Northeast Atlantic to bottom fishing but says more action is needed.
The move will see deep sea fishing using gear such as trawls, gillnets and bottom longlines, banned in 87 sensitive zones. The area amounts to 16,000 km2 of EU waters, of which nearly 9,000 km2 are within the Irish Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Fair Seas published a report in June identifying 16 ‘Areas of Interest’ for MPA designation in Irish waters.
The new closures line up almost perfectly with the areas identified by Fair Seas.
The new ban on bottom fishing will apply to 1.8% of Irish waters. Fair Seas is urging the Government to designate a minimum of 30% of Irish waters as Marine Protected Areas by 2030, up from the current figure of 2% which the group says is wholly inadequate. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are areas of our seas and coasts legally protected from activities that damage the habitats, wildlife and natural processes.
Regina Classen, Marine Policy and Research Officer with the Irish Wildlife Trust said, “This is incredible news for Ireland. We have sensitive ecosystems in the deep waters off the Irish coast. These areas are home to cold water coral reefs, deep sea sponge reefs and seapen fields which are easily damaged by bottom-contacting fishing gear. Not only are we now protecting fragile deep sea reefs from bottom trawling, but even a part of the Porcupine Bank, which is heavily trawled for Dublin Bay Prawn, is now protected due to the presence of sea-pens.”
The Fair Seas campaign is led by a coalition of Ireland’s leading environmental nongovernmental organisations and networks including Irish Wildlife Trust, BirdWatch Ireland, Sustainable Water Network, Friends of the Irish Environment, Irish Whale and Dolphin Group, Coomhola Salmon Trust, Irish Environmental Network and Coastwatch. It is funded by Oceans 5, Blue Nature Alliance, BFCT and The Wyss Foundation.

Ireland’s leading multi mobility app FREE NOW is partnering with Munster Rugby as its Official Mobility App Partner until 2025. The new partnership will bring FREE NOW and Munster Rugby together for the 2022-23 season and over the next three years. As part of the partnership, fans attending the upcoming matches will be able to participate in competitions for a chance to win FREE NOW vouchers. Speaking at the launch of the partnership, Regional Development Manager for FREE NOW, Denis Fogarty said, “We are delighted to announce our new partnership with Munster Rugby for the next three years and as a former Munster player myself for over 12 years, I am really excited about this new sponsorship and to see FREE NOW supporting sport in the Munster region.
FREE NOW has been providing public transport solutions for passengers here in Cork for almost 10 years now and we look forward to expanding our offering further in the coming years, helping more people get from A to B thanks to our fleet of driver partners across the county.”
