Minister Foley announces new multi-millioneuro women’s refuge for Kerry

Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley has announced a new multi-million-euro women’s refuge for Kerry.

The ADAPT Kerry service in Tralee will be expanded into a larger women’s refuge with 13 family residential units, kitchen facilities, living spaces and a playroom. Other facilities will include a reception, laundry room, meeting rooms, therapeutic spaces for children, teenagers and adults, study areas and a first aid and treatment area. There will also be an outdoor play area featuring a playground, a sensory space, and a picnic and seating area. Minister Foley thanked Darragh O’Brien, the Minister for Housing, for approving the multimillion-euro budget for the project.

“I welcome the fact that we will now

have an enhanced women’s refuge in Tralee to help victims of domestic violence. Domestic violence profoundly affects the physical, emotional, social and financial wellbeing of individuals and families. This facility will be a vital support for women who have to leave their home immediately for their own safety.”

Minister Foley paid tribute to the work of ADAPT Kerry:

“I especially want to acknowledge the outstanding work of the management, staff and board of ADAPT Kerry. We are fortunate to have such dedicated and expert personnel providing this enormously important service for the benefit of those who need it.”

Minister Foley also thanked Kerry County Council for their support and

input.

Minister Foley encouraged any person who is being affected by domestic violence to seek support and to contact the Gardaí.

“Domestic violence is one of the

greatest ills that can affect any individual, harming their sense of safety and self within their home. For survivors of domestic violence, it can feel as if there is no escape. But there are supports out there and I encourage anyone who is being affected to avail of them.”

Kerry Library to mark National Public Libraries Day 2024

Kerry Library is one of over 300 libraries celebrating National Public Libraries Day 2024 on Saturday, 28th September. As part of the “Take a Closer Look” campaign, the public is encouraged to explore the wide variety of free services available at their local libraries.

On Saturday morning, libraries across Kerry will host activities for children, including storytime, craft sessions, and STEM playtime. National Public Libraries Open Day highlights the essential role libraries play in Irish society, encouraging more people to

become members. Currently, over 784,000 people—about one in six of the population—are library members, with membership being free. Kerry County Librarian Tommy O’Connor said, “This day is a great opportunity to promote the expanding services libraries offer and to celebrate their impact on Irish life.” Libraries now provide access to over 12 million items, including books, eBooks, eAudiobooks, CDs, DVDs, digital magazines, newspapers, online courses, and more. They also offer computers, free WiFi,

study spaces, and information to support citizens’ access to services, education, and community resources. Convenient pick-up and drop-off services at any library make them more accessible than ever. Children’s services include books for all ages, events for families, school support, and sensory services. Libraries also host book clubs, exhibitions, and language exchanges. They offer valuable information on history, heritage, genealogy, and wellbeing. Libraries serve underrepresented

communities by providing costfree resources, and through book reuse, members are practicing environmental responsibility. Kerry has nine branch libraries and two mobile libraries serving 84 locations. Many libraries are open all day on Saturdays, with late openings in some branches. LEGAL MATTERS CORNER

MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

David has three children aged 15, 10 and 5 years with his partner Roisin. They are not married and have been together ten years, and he is wondering what his legal position in relation to the children and Roisin is if anything should happen to any of them or if they were to ever separate.

Non-married mothers in Ireland are the sole custodians and Guardians of their children as recognized under the constitution. Non-married fathers are not automatically Guardians, nor are they regarded as custodians of their children. They have however a right to automatic guardianship once they have lived with the mother for twelve months including three months after the birth once the child is born after the 18/1/2016. This may only be applicable to only one of his children. In order to ensure he has guardianship he and Roisin can sign a form SI 210/2020 available on a click through the www.citizensinformation. ie or www.treoir.ie website. He can also apply through the courts service for a Guardianship order with Roisin’s consent which is permanent recorded evidence of his Guardianship. Even though David is probably on the children’s birth certificates as he is not married to Roisin it does not give him any automatic Guardianship rights. Whether he is a Guardian or not if he and Roisin ever parted, she could apply against him for maintenance for the children.

The amount of this would depend on what arrangements are in place for

the care of the children. If he is not a Guardian if they parted, he could apply to court for Guardianship and Joint Custody or Access and the court would decide on arrangements for the children. The courts very much encourage people to agree between themselves and to help them do this the mediation service is available to help people come to an agreement. www.legalaidboard. ie and our local medication service is in Maine St Tralee phone number 0667186100 and both parties can phone up and put their name on the waiting list. Roisin and David are qualified cohabitees within the meaning of the cohabitants legislation so if either were dependent on the other, they could apply for redress if they parted or one of them died. This could include maintenance, property provision, pension provision and lump sum orders. It is important that Roisin and David do wills appointing each other executor and testamentary guardians of the infant children along with other people if anything happened to both of them. They need to be aware of the tax implications that the tax threshold on leaving property to each other is €16250 and over that they are taxed at 33% unless e.g. the only home together exemption applies. So ideally, they should seek advice on this on how to provide for each other and the children if anything happens either of them. A mutual life policy is a good way of ensuring this provision.

Law quip “I want my children to have all the things I couldn’t afford. Then I want to move in with them.”—Phyllis Diller.

Munster Technological University to host Service Park for The Rose Hotel Kerry Winter Rally

Munster Technological University (MTU) is set to play a pivotal role in the upcoming The Rose Hotel Kerry Winter Rally by hosting the event’s service park.

This new collaboration between MTU and the Kerry Motor Club marks a significant milestone for both organisations.

The state-of-the-art facility at the edge of Tralee town, hailed by World Rally Championship observers as a world-class venue, will provide ample hardstanding space for a large number of service trucks and spectator parking.

With Tralee serving as the hub of activity that weekend, The Rose Hotel will also function as the event headquarters and parc ferme, located on its grounds.

Kelliher’s Toyota will continue its role as the scrutiny venue, a tradition established during the 2022 event and reflecting a longstanding partnership between Kerry Motor

Club and Kerry’s Toyota dealership.

The announcement of the service park at MTU is part of the broader changes introduced by the Kerry Motor Club for this year’s Kerry Winter Rally.

For the first time in its 43-year history, the popular end-of-season event will move from its longtime home at Banna Beach Resort to The Rose Hotel in Tralee.

The transition marks a new chapter for the rally, which has become affectionately known as the Banna Rally due to its longstanding association with the resort.

Sean Hegarty, Clerk of the Course, expressed his enthusiasm for the new partnership and the preparations underway for the November 3 event.

“The route safety survey has been completed, and entries will open before the end of September,” he said. “Given the rally’s status as a counting round for three

championships, we anticipate a capacity entry of over 150 cars.”

The rally is the final round of three championships, The Top Part West Coast Rally Championship, the Ace Signs Southern 4 Rally Championship and the Moriarty’s Central Car Sales Kingdom of Kerry

Rally Championship.

Robin O Donnell´s Antiques Fair celebrates 35 years coming to Tralee

Hibernian Antique Fairs and all of its Antique dealers feel part of the fabric of what is and what makes Co. Kerry the special and unique place that it is. Robin O’Donnell of Hibernian says “We ran our very first Fair in Tralee in 1990” “Little did we know or think that we would be still running them 35 odd years later” “ It is hard to realise how successful we have been and remain there in Co. Kerry” “We have made so many friends there over the years and the loyalty and support they have shown us is second to none”

¨Time after time after time our customers turn up in droves. Sounds smarmy but Robin says we would be lost without our Co. Kerry fairs. I personally love visiting and meeting with so

many friends that I have made over the years, I am indebted to Kerry and its people.¨ We are always made to feel so welcome. Since moving our Fair to Ballygarry Hotel & Resort some years ago we have gone from strength to strength. Slick Wanderers sink Kerry!

Kerry FC faced Bray Wanderers at the Carlisle Grounds on Friday for the final time this season. Coming off a tough 4-1 defeat to Cork City, Kerry hoped to end their nine-game winless streak. Meanwhile, Bray, sitting in fourth place, aimed to strengthen their playoff chances with a win.

The match started poorly for Kerry as Bray took the lead in the 8th

minute. Harry Groome, following a slick exchange with Shane Griffin, struck a precise shot past Kerry’s keeper, Antonio Tuta. Bray continued to dominate, with Groome nearly doubling the lead five minutes later and Tuta making several crucial saves, including a brilliant one from a Griffin free kick. Kerry responded with a few chances of their own before halftime, but efforts from

others.

¨The Co. Kerry Antique Fair , on Sunday the 6th October will celebrate several milestones. Tralee and its Hotels have hosted The Kerry Antique Art & Vintage Fair for the last thirty five years.

We can’t wait to see you all as always and nothing has changed except for the phenomenal size and variety of the fair this time around. Admission is still only €3.50 as it has been for the last 12 years, children are free and most welcome as are dogs on short leads. Updates here every day on https://www.facebook.com/ groups/1024372764298034 Kind Regards, Robin O’Donnell

Sean McGrath, Ronan Teahan, and Ryan Kelliher failed to find the net. In the second half, Bray extended their lead with a 25-yard strike from Guillermo Almirall, catching Tuta off guard at his near post. Despite a half-chance from McGrath, Kerry struggled to create meaningful opportunities. Bray controlled the game comfortably, and Cristian Magerusan missed a chance to add

a third.

Tuta continued to deny Bray further goals, saving a header from Griffin with nine minutes remaining, but Kerry couldn’t mount a comeback. Bray secured a 2-0 win, leaving Kerry FC still searching for a victory. Kerry will next face Finn Harps at Mounthawk Park as they seek to finish the season on a high note.

Huge boost to Tralee clubs as €13 million in sports grants for Kerry!

Minister for Education and Kerry

T.D Norma Foley has welcomed confirmation of over €13.6 million in sports grants for over 140 clubs. The grants are going to fund new grass pitches, astroturf pitches, dressing rooms, sports halls, gyms, floodlights and solar panels. They range in value from around €3,000 to over €500,000.

The successful applicants cover a range of different sports including Gaelic football, hurling, soccer, rugby, tennis, athletics, golf, cricket, rowing and canoeing.

The funding of €13,689,777 is coming from the Community Sports Facilities Fund, which is the new name for the sports capital grants. Minister Foley said the grants would help to further strengthen sport in Kerry.

“We love our sport in Kerry and these new sports grants will help to provide fantastic new facilities for generations to come. The funding supports a whole variety of

sporting disciplines and caters for people of all ages and abilities. As

Minister for Education, I want to particularly acknowledge the number of clubs and schools that made successful joint applications.”

Minister Foley also welcomed the positive response from Kerry clubs to the new stipulation in the Community Sports Facilities Fund to improve female participation in sport.

All clubs receiving the grants have committed to providing equal access to their facilities, such as pitches and dressing rooms.

“Our sports clubs are led by volunteers. Their generosity really provides excellent coaching, amenities and facilities in our

community. And this is a great reward for their hard work. It has been a privilege to work closely with many of these clubs,” Minister Foley said.

A full list of clubs receiving grants is attached. The list includes sports equipment grants to almost 50 clubs, which were announced

recently. It also includes sports grants to more than one hundred clubs. The Community Sports Facilities Fund is the primary vehicle for Government support for the development of sports and physical recreation facilities and the purchase of non-personal sports equipment throughout the country.
