Ned O’Shea Construction to build 235 Homes!
Development of much-needed quality housing | Local Company Rooted in Community supports Tralee’s growth
Ned O’Shea Construction has applied for a €70 million Large Scale Residential Development (LRD) in Lisloose, Tralee, Co. Kerry. The 9.2-hectare site on Bracker O’Regan Road, adjacent to the recently opened Tralee-Fenit Greenway, is set to house 235 homes and a Bronze Age ringfort. This development addresses the area’s housing needs and is projected to create 200 jobs, benefiting both the local community and suppliers.
James O’Shea, Managing Director, expressed confidence in the timing of this proposal, citing the company’s 50-year history of communitybuilding in Kerry. He emphasized the project’s significance in aiding Tralee’s growth, amidst other promising ventures like the €300 million Astellas Pharma facility,
complemented by new hotels and restaurants.
The proposal encompasses a mix of dwelling types and sizes, including 2, 3, and 4-bedroom houses, and 1 and 2-bedroom apartments, fostering sustainable living in green surroundings. Plans also feature a childcare facility, a small commercial unit, and provision for 372 car spaces and 349 cycle spaces. With its residential zoning and previous unopposed planning permission in 2017, the site layout maximizes its topographical advantages, offering picturesque views of Tralee, a mere 2 kilometers south. Its proximity to primary and secondary schools further enhances its appeal.
The landscape design prioritizes
dynamic, welldistributed natural areas and inviting public spaces, with intentions to plant over 400 trees. Extensive surveys, including for badgers, bats, and aquatic life, have been conducted. A carefully designated Bronze Age Ring Fort will be complemented with informative signage, honouring its historical value.
The company commits to working closely with the council to allocate an appropriate number of units for social and affordable housing,
aligning with the Part 5 obligation. Furthermore, a comprehensive Traffic and Transport Assessment (TTA) and Flood Risk Assessment have been conducted, meeting Kerry County Council’s safety and sustainability standards.
Tralee will host Prestigious International Conference
Along with Boise, Idaho and Canberra in Australia, Tralee has been confirmed as the European base for the 7th International Fire Behaviour and Fuels Conference. The Conference will take place simultaneously in Tralee, County Kerry, Canberra, Australia, Boise and Idaho, USA in April 2024, Next year Tralee, Co. Kerry will play its part in the drive for climate adaptation and the fight against catastrophic wildfires globally. Wildfires present an increasing challenge to humanity and the ecosystems and atmosphere we depend on.
Ciarán Nugent, Board Member of the International Association of Wildland Fire and Chair of the Irish Organising said “As we have seen already this year across Europe, North Africa and North America, uncontrolled fires have the potential to destroy communities, natural habitats and landscapes where conditions permit extreme wildfires to develop. As our climate changes, and the effects are experienced in unique ways across diverse settings
and societies, understanding fire behaviour and human responses to fire is even more critical.”
Like many countries across Europe, Ireland has seen its share of serious wildfire activity in recent years and Kerry offers an ideal fire environment like many other places on the western Atlantic coast of Europe within which to discuss emerging fire issues and solutions. The Tralee event is being organised by IAWF in partnership with Tralee Chamber and a number of local stakeholders.
Colette O’Connor, CEO of Tralee Chamber said “Ciarán Nugent, the Regional Inspector from the Forest Service within the Department of Agriculture, Food, and Marine here in Ireland, made his initial contact with Tralee Chamber in February. Tralee Chamber was thrilled to collaborate in securing this conference for our town. The looming threat of wildfires is a concern not only for Tralee but for the entire county.”
“Following our first meeting in February, we convened several
meetings with the International Association of Wildland Fire committee. During these sessions, we presented a comprehensive overview of what Tralee has to offer. The Rose Hotel will serve as the conference’s headquarters. We eagerly anticipate the opportunity to showcase everything that Tralee and its surrounding areas have to offer to the international and national conference sector.” More information can be found on 2024 Fire Behaviour and Fuels Conference – Fuel, fire and smoke: evolving to meet

UHK honors late Nurse Kerrie Browne
The Browne family unveiled the newly redecorated Paediatrics area in the Emergency Department of University Hospital Kerry (UHK) today, Wednesday, September 27th, 2023. This heartfelt initiative pays tribute to their beloved daughter and sister, Kerrie Browne, whose memory will forever be honoured at UHK.
Kerrie Browne, a compassionate and dedicated nurse, tragically lost her life on October 2nd, 2019.
Prior to working at UHK, Kerrie had worked as an agency nurse in London for five years. Her return to Ireland was marked by her vivacious work as a nurse at UHK, where she quickly made an indelible mark on her colleagues. In the spirit of remembering Kerrie’s vibrant personality and her love for travel, the Browne family organised the ‘Kerrie Browne Memorial 5K Run in Brosna’ on January 5th, 2020, raising an impressive €7,000 for University Hospital Kerry.
The central feature of the redecorated Paediatrics area is its captivating murals, a symbol of Kerrie’s passion for exploration and adventure. The Paediatric waiting area is embellished with wall to wall muralling which include a World Map, recognising Kerrie’s love of travel. Inside the paediatric cubicles, our paediatric patients will find a park-themed design complete with a park bench, adorned with the heartfelt inscription, ‘In loving memory of Kerrie Browne.’ In a thoughtful addition, one of the Paediatric bays, bay 3, has been redecorated with a muted colour scheme, creating a comfortable environment for children who may have visual sensitivities.
The redecorated Paediatrics space in the Emergency Department will continue providing essential services while now also creating an environment that fosters healing and comfort. The addition of these murals have absolutely transformed
an everyday space into a vibrant and child-friendly area, delivering an audio/visual separation from the adult ED space.
The UHK team expresses profound gratitude to the Browne Family for their remarkable generosity.
The Browne family’s dedication to preserving Kerrie’s memory through this exceptional redecoration project serves as a testament to their unwavering love and enduring commitment to Kerrie’s memory.
Generations of children to come will have their Emergency Department experience, greatly enhanced, by this uplifting and touching gesture the Browne family have enabled through their fundraising, to Kerry’s legacy.

READ LAURE & STEPH'S JOURNEY ON THIS FOCUS COURSE
Laure says:
“Discovering the Focus course at the National Learning Network in Tralee was a transformative moment in my life, thanks to the insightful suggestion of RO Nora. Initially, I hadn't considered it, as I was completing another course and struggling with low confidence, uncertain about my future. However, after meeting Geoff and conversing with Focus course alumni, I decided to take the leap. My first day was nerve-wracking, leading me to arrive late—a rarity for me. I had to muster the courage to enter that classroom, setting the stage for a whirlwind of meeting new faces and preparing for the journey ahead. Looking back, this challenging path stands as one of the best decisions I've ever made, even though it's been about three years since I completed the course.
The Focus course empowered me in numerous ways:
1. Self-Discovery: Before embarking on this journey, I believed I knew myself, but it was during the course that I truly examined who I am and what I desire. I had spent my life conforming to others' expectations, but the course helped me find my voice and establish healthy boundaries.
2. Unique Experiences: The course provided opportunities to explore places I wouldn't have ventured to alone, such as Blackrock Observatory and St. John's Castle.
3. Overcoming Challenges: Even when the world faced a pandemic, the support of the Focus group, both online and offline, helped me navigate the uncertainty. It equipped me with tools to reemerge into a changed world.
While there's much more to share about the Focus course, I encourage you to experience it firsthand. I am living proof that this course can change lives, and I am immensely grateful for the journey and the people who shared it with me. The lessons I learned continue to guide me daily. If you're feeling stuck and aspire to transform your life, I wholeheartedly recommend the Focus course. Approach it with an open mind, give your best, and extend kindness to yourself and others. It's a journey worth taking.
Steph says:
This FOCUS course opened up so many doors for me that i didn't think possible ! It helped me find friends that I will never forget . And equipped me with life skills in so many areas . Yes, the year was challenging , but also fun & relaxed. I am now in full employment and use the skills I learned daily for my mental health"

Caring Katie chops her locks for charities
A caring Castlegregory teenager has this week taken the plunge and chopped 14 inches from her hair to help two charities.Transition
Year student Katie Crean (15) grew her hair over the last three years knowing that she would eventually donate it to charity.
Last Wednesday she took on a whole new look after Tralee hairdresser Karina Sweeney from ‘Hair By Karina’ cut 14 inches off, which Katie is now donating to the Rapunzel Foundation, a charity that makes wigs for sick children. In less than a week the Mean Scoil Nua an Leith Triúigh student raised over €800 for the Kerry Hospice Foundation, a charity which is close to her heart.“I wanted to give something to a great charity that helps a lot of people,” Katie said.
“The Kerry Hospice Foundation were very good to my family two years ago when we needed them, especially the staff in the Palliative Care Unit. Since then I have wanted to do something to raise funds and awareness for them. My hair was long so I decided to keep growing it so that I could donate it to the Rapunzel Foundation and also collect donations separately for Kerry Hospice.”She is delighted with the response from the public.
“I had set a target of €250 on iDonate not thinking I would reach it. However, after a few days I was thrilled to see it had reached €800.
I’m hoping that I can get it to €1,000 before the closing date on October 17th.”
