Nonie age 92 lives at home and is very independent in her advancing years. Her family are concerned about her and are worried she will be preyed upon by abusive individuals as there are some people in her locality who are in touch with her and may be pressurising her for money.
With a growing aging population, the issue of the elderly and vulnerable adult is more to the fore. The HSE are developing policies and strategies to deal with this area, and it is likely that we will see legislation in the area down the line. Abuse can take place on any person any time, but an older and more vulnerable person is more at risk. Abuse can be in many and varied forms including psychological abuse, physical abuse, financial abuse, sexual abuse, institutional abuse, neglect, or discriminatory abuse. The HSE now has safeguarding teams in every part of the country and their details are on the HSE website. If someone is aware of elder abuse they can report it to their local health centre, GP, public health nurse or Gardai. There is a HSE helpline at 1850241850.
The HSE have produced videos open your eyes to abuse available on utube at https://www.youtube.com/ playlist?list=PL1E367659040E5174 And the Banking and Payments Federation of Ireland have produced a useful booklet on “Guide to Safeguarding your money now and into the future” to help older people avoid financial abuse. There is now a national safeguarding office and they have very valuable information on https://www.safeguardingireland.org/. It is recommended that everyone do an enduring power of attorney which will mean that trusted people can look after a person’s affairs if they ever become non compos mentis. There is need for legislation in this area and hopefully this will come in down the line particularly for vulnerable adults who may have mental health and capacity issues and for adults with intellectual disabilities. In the meantime it is important that as a society we look out for the older and more vulnerable members of our community and report on elder abuse when we see or suspect same. All reports are dealt with seriously and confidentially and diplomatically respecting the autonomy and human rights of the vulnerable individual. They also respect the older person’s wishes in so far as possible.
Law quip: “A society that does not value its older people denies its roots and endangers its future.

Can you please tell me more about the Tribella offer on the back page? Thanks, Karen.
Hi Karen, the Tribella treatment is for anyone concerned with aging and is exclusively available at CHRC. Through sun exposure, aging and hormonal changes, the skin can sustain a lot of damage.
If you’ve noticed age spots, sun damage, uneven pigmentation or texture, the Tribella facial rejuvenation treatment may be right for you. The Tribella facial rejuvenation is a high-intensity, non-invasive solution that gives highly visible results, fast. Combining three unique treatments into one complete skin renewal treatment, this treatment will leave your skin feeling incredibly smoother, looking younger and healthier. The Tribella photo-facial works on fading discoloration and age spots, reduces sun damage, and improves skin tone. Then, the anti-aging works on reducing fine lines, wrinkles and skin laxity. Lastly, the skin resurfacing treatment smoothens out the appearance of uneven skin texture, scars, rosacea, enlarged pores, stretch marks, and other skin textural concerns. The Tribella photo-facial uses precise bursts of intense pulsed light to improve the appearance of uneven skin tone and sun damage. The light targets and reduces the hemoglobin pigment inside visible blood vessels and dark pigmented spots. The result is glowing, younger-looking skin. Tribella anti-aging uses a comfortable combination of energy to produce heat beneath the skin, helping to promote healthy blood flow and increase the production of collagen and elastin fibers. The result is skin that looks firmer and younger, and with fewer lines or wrinkles. The skin resurfacing improves overall skin texture by delivering channels of energy deep into the skin. As the skin heals, it naturally boosts collagen and elastin production for total skin renewal.

We are so lucky to have Siamsa Tíre, Ireland’s National Folk Theatre and Art Centre right here on our doorstep and from today, they are hosting an exciting exhibition by renowned illustrator Margret Anne Suggs entitled Home is Where the Heart Is, just in time for the Halloween mid-term break.
Margret’s artwork has featured in several children’s books including the number one best-seller Pigin of Howth, written by Kathleen Watkins and awarded the BGE Junior Children’s Book of the Year in 2016.
This exhibition delves into the notion of ‘home’ and what it means from the perspective of an immigrant artist. Included is a series of beautifully intricate, handcrafted birdhouses. Each birdhouse tells part of Margret’s story as an immigrant, facing challenges like
belonging and identity. “The exhibition explores my journey from childhood to finding my place in the world,” she said. This is a great opportunity for everyone to enjoy a shot of culture while considering the idea of ‘home’ and what exactly that means.
The exhibition is being launched at 6pm, Thursday, October 13 and is free for everyone to attend. Bringing the little ones is highly recommended!
There is also a Build Your Own Birdhouse Workshop over the mid-term break (29th October 2022 @ 12pm until 1pm) where children aged 5-12yrs will design and build their own decorative paper birdhouse, similar to those featured in Margaret’s exhibition. Tickets for this event cost €15 and are limited so booking is advised. See siamsatire.com for more.

Castlemaine Events Committee will host Castlemaine Fair Day on Sunday October 16th in memory of the late John O’Donoghue.
The location of the Sheep Fair will be in Griffin's Car Park and it will get underway from 10:00am.
After a very successful revival of the old fair day in Castlemaine in 2021 which saw blue skies galore, huge crowds gather and over €40,000 raised from the event, the decision was taken to make it an annual event which will not only raise invaluable funds for the wonderful services which Kerry Hospice offer but it is also a means of keeping John’s memory alive for both his family and friends.
There will be an auction on the day like last year where the donation of animals is most welcome. Funds raised from the auction will go towards The Palliative Care Unit at University Hospital Kerry . A raffle with some wonderful spot prizes on offer courtesy of sponsorship, bucket
collections and kids’ entertainment will also be in operation throughout the day. As an addition to this year’s event there will be a pet show in the afternoon.
John O’Donoghue who was known all over resided in the heart of Castlemaine Village and was born on January 21st, 1965 which ironically happened to coincide with a staging of the old Castlemaine Fair Day .
Speaking about the event, John’s daughter Cathy said: “The fair day was an annual event in Castlemaine, but it died out in the 90s. This event is very important as it keeps my father’s memory alive as we approach the 3rd anniversary in January 2023.
"John loved to attend the fair days throughout the county and was well known as the custom of attending the fairs was passed onto John from his father Denis. Attending the fairs was not only enjoyable but also important to my father as he liked to
keep up traditions. You would always be sure to get a bit of traditional luck back in the form of change from my father too with a deal.
It was a huge shock to John, his family, and friends when he was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer in May 2019. His life was cut short as 7 months after that he died in the Palliative Care Unit on the 13th of January 2020.
Almost everyone has been affected by cancer in some way or another and are familiar with the Kerry Hospice in UHK. We hope that we can raise as much money as possible on the day for such a wonderful service here in the heart of Kerry. "
It is great to have the Castlemaine Events Committee on board to help with the planning of the event. We are very lucky to have such a team in a small village. The support from the farming community and local community is truly heart-warming .
All queries surrounding the Fair Day can be directed to Castlemaine

As part of ‘An Turas Mór– the Homecoming Kerry Festival’ members of the Kerry diaspora who are to the fore in promoting Kerry from a visitor and economic viewpoint, were honoured in Tralee last Friday night.
The special event, which took place in the Rose Hotel, Tralee, saw 23 members of the Kerry diaspora, based in London, Manchester and Massachusetts, honoured for their work. Six recipients who have passed to their eternal reward, were represented by family members and friends who travelled to accept the award on their behalf.
The idea to honour these recipients arose from a meeting between Kerry County Council and the Kerry Association in London earlier this year, Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr John Francis Flynn paid tribute to the recipients, recognising their love of the county and their desire to work on behalf of Kerry. He also stated that plans were underway to hold a similar event in the USA next year to honour New York based members of the diaspora.
An Turas Mór – the Homecoming Kerry Festival, is part of the Global
Irish Festival Series supported by Fáilte Ireland and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
“Your achievements in the community, cultural, business, educational and professional spheres is legendary,” the Cathaoirleach said. “One cannot but be in awe at what you have achieved throughout your lives and are still doing so.
Your resilience and dedication, your generosity, your roles in promoting and supporting the county of Kerry, including the GAA, the Rose of Tralee, Irish causes and charities has been amazing. The countless number of young people from Kerry and elsewhere that you have helped, mentored or given their ‘first start’.
The broad range of Kerry charities, communities, and development projects that you have supported.”
Echoing this, Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell, stated “It is important that we take the time, at events like this, to stand up and acknowledge the work that is being done outside of Kerry, on behalf of the county,” she said. “We in Kerry County Council have long recognised the importance of the Kerry Association and other diaspora
groups around the globe and we will continue to work hard to maintain and promote these linkages to the benefit of Kerry.”
The continuing work of the Kerry diaspora into the future was also recognised on Friday evening, as the Kerry Convention Bureau unveiled their Kerry Ambassador Programme. This has been created for community and industry leaders who are interested in supporting the county by influencing and attracting business events and investment
opportunities to Kerry.
A group of 37 highly regarded key influencers and decision-makers who hail from Kerry and across the globe, representing sectors such as community, enterprise, academia, business, engineering, medicine, science, technology, sport, arts and culture, and who have demonstrated their commitment and passion for their county will use their knowledge and connections to advocate for Kerry.
The Kingdom Veteran Vintage and Classic Car Club will remember one of its most popular members during the Annual Autumn Run this weekend.
Dick Mason, from, Caherleaheen just outside Tralee passed away in September 2019. He was one of the club’s most active members and he and his wife Anne put a lot of work into the social side of the club. Dick’s family have commissioned a special trophy in his honour. The Dick Mason Memorial Perpetual Trophy will be presented at this weekend’s Autumn Run in Kenmare. It will be presented to the member who has made the biggest contribution to classic motoring in County Kerry - the Spirit of the Club - in the last year as decided by Dick’s family.
The Mason Family and members of the KVVCC unveiled the new trophy at a special event at the Ballygarry Estate on Friday last.
“This is a great way to honour him,” said his wife, Anne. “The vintage club was his life.”
KVVCCC’s chairman Tony Hehir said:
“Dick was a friend to everyone in the club. No matter what time of day or night you called him he was happy to help you.”
His friend Tom Slattery became a member of the KVVCCC in 2000 after Dick persuaded him to join.
“He gave me a loan of an Austin A40 for a few road runs to see if I would like the scene,” said the Monavalley man .”Here I am 23 years later still involved. We helped each other out with a lot of restoration projects.”
The club’s Autumn Run gets underway from the Kenmare Bay Hotel next Saturday morning.Over 100 cars will take part in a road run along the Beara Peninsula and the Healy Pass before returning to the hotel for a night of celebration.
Among them is Dick’s son Alan who will drive the family’s 1966 Austin Mini. The oldest car on the run is a 1933 Rolls Royce. Three cars from the 1940s will participate: a 1946 Austin, a 1947 Bentley and a 1949 Riley.
Every decade of motoring from the
1930s to the 1990s is represented on the entry list.
Other interesting cars include a 1956 Ford Anglia, a 1966 Mercedes
W110 Fin Tail, a 1973 Triumph Stag, a 1984 Jaguar XJ6 and a 1999 Toyota Celica.

While the Garvey’s Senior Football Championship at the semi-final stage most of the Tralee interest will be on other competitions.
Firstly a quick look at the Last 4 in the race for the Bishop Moynihan and most expect that the overall winner will come from who gets through the Dingle versus East Kerry clash. That game is on Sunday in Austin Stack Park at 2.30pm. The night before both Feale Rangers and Mid Kerry will fancy a crack at reaching the biggest local game of the year when they throwin at 7.15pm. However for Austin Stacks fans their attention is already on the following week when they face Kenmare Shamrocks in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday 23rd at 1.15pm in the Senior Relegation Playoffs – a game both sides really won’t want to lose. That will be followed by a huge game for another Tralee side, Kerins O’Rahillys, as they go head to head with Templenoe in the Club Championship final. This throws in a 3pm with possible more than just the title on the line.
After his long and successful time in charge of Austin Stacks Wayne Quillinan is moving to pastures new as he has taken over from James Costello as the Kerry minor boss. We wish Wayne and his backroom team all the best as they pith their young Kerry stars up against the best in the country.
