Pieta Receives €14,200 From 70 Companies Featured On Kerry Airport Departures Wall

Pieta’s suicide prevention efforts in Kerry received a significant boost from 70 local companies, who collectively donated €14,200 through an ongoing initiative at Kerry Airport. Passengers on outbound flights can see the logos of these businesses, each contributing to support Pieta’s work throughout the county.

Kerry Airport, Red Chair Recruitment, and Slógadh Signs have spearheaded this campaign since 2021, raising both funds for Pieta and awareness of local job opportunities in Kerry. Kerry Airport CEO, John Mulhern, expressed pride in the partnership, stating, “This is our fourth year working with Pieta, a charity deeply valued by the people of southwest Ireland. Over this period, we’ve donated more than €35,000 to Pieta in Kerry. We now have 70 local companies displayed on our Departures Lounge wall, and

with growing interest, we may need more space. These companies are also featured on our website, and we are grateful for their support.”

Kerry Senior Football Captain, Paudie Clifford of Red Chair Recruitment, presented the cheque for €14,200 to Pieta’s Regional Community Funding and Advocacy Team Lead, John Dempsey. Mr. Dempsey thanked everyone involved, saying, “Pieta is incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support from Kerry Airport, Red Chair Recruitment, Slógadh Signs, and the businesses supporting the Open for Business Wall. With this generous help, we can continue providing free services to families and individuals across Kerry.” The Open for Business Wall will be renewed in January 2025. Businesses interested in promoting their services while supporting Pieta are encouraged to contact

Minister Foley delivers as 123 school secretaries now on State payroll!

Minister for Education and Kerry

TD, Norma Foley, has welcomed the news that 123 school secretaries in Kerry are now receiving payment directly from the State, fulfilling a commitment she made to support their long-running campaign for fair treatment.

This new arrangement is part of a broader set of measures regarding the terms and conditions of school secretaries, following discussions at the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC). These changes aim to address long-standing issues for grant-funded school secretaries. Foley also confirmed that work is underway to secure similar arrangements for school caretakers, recognizing their significant contribution to school communities. School secretaries play a vital

role and are employed directly by many of the 3,089 primary schools and 722 post-primary schools across Ireland. Currently, 2,745 individual secretaries are on the payroll nationwide, covering 2,984 positions, with 203 secretaries holding multiple jobs.

Minister Foley stated, “School secretaries had been campaigning for years to be included on the State payroll. When I became Minister for Education, I committed to delivering on this promise. I am very pleased that around 2,700 school secretaries nationwide, including 123 in Kerry, are now receiving proper recognition through the State payroll. I also intend to progress the same for school caretakers to ensure they receive the acknowledgment they deserve.”

Of the 123 school secretaries in Kerry, 107 work in 103 primary schools, while 16 are employed in nine post-primary schools. A survey issued in May to all primary

and post-primary schools will help gather information on grant-funded caretakers, facilitating further discussions with their representative union, Forsa.

Kerry FC top off the season with a home win v Athlone

Kerry FC wrapped up their 2024 SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division season with a 2-0 victory over Athlone Town at Mounthawk Park on Friday night. Despite finishing bottom of the table, Kerry FC aimed to end the season on a high note, while Athlone Town had already secured a playoff spot and hoped for a higher league finish.

Kerry started strong, dominating possession from the outset. Their efforts were rewarded in the ninth

minute when Cian Brosnan fired a stunning free kick into the top left corner, giving the home side an early lead. Kerry continued to press, with chances from Finn Barrett and Sean McGrath, but they couldn’t extend their lead before halftime. Athlone struggled to create meaningful chances, as Kerry FC delivered a commanding first-half performance. The second half began similarly, with Kerry doubling their lead just five minutes after the restart. Finn

Barrett’s precise pass found Ronan Teahan on the right wing, whose slick play set up Sean McGrath to assist Kennedy Amechi, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom left corner.

Athlone had their first significant chance in the 57th minute when Gideon Tetteh’s shot seemed destined for the top right corner, but a superb save from Antonio Tuta kept Kerry’s two-goal lead intact. Tuta was called into action again

late in the game, denying a powerful volley from Brian Torre. Kerry FC’s 2-0 victory ended their winless streak, providing a positive conclusion to a challenging season in front of their home fans at Mounthawk Park.

Seniors:

After a closely contested encounter on Friday night last in John Mitchels complex, it was the home side who emerged victorious in the Tralee/St Brendans League final.

We led by the minimum at half time, 1-04 to 1-03, Darragh O’Connor with the goal but the second half was nip and tuck and ended all square at the final whistle, 1-11 to 2-08.

Extra time saw Mitchels dominate and they ran out winners on a final scoreline of 3-14 to 1-12.
