LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
Sean and Emma had a bad experience with food poisoning at a restaurant up the country recently and were wondering what laws were in place concerning the sale of food for human consumption in Ireland. Well firstly the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) is the state body in charge and its mandate is to take all reasonable steps to ensure that food consumed, produced, distributed or marketed in the State meets the highest standards of food safety and hygiene reasonably available and to ensure that food complies with legal requirements, or where appropriate with recognised codes of good practice. The Authority has authorised officers who have extensive powers to enter and inspect food premises, to secure these premises for later inspection, to inspect and, if necessary, remove records. These officers may take samples of food or related materials and have these samples analysed and it is an offence for any person to obstruct an officer in carrying out this duty. The FSAI has a lot of power and can carry out Improvement notices, which is where some remedial action is needed but where a complete shut-down of operations may not be warranted. Where an improvement notice is not complied with, the officer may seek an order from the District Court to force compliance – this is known as an improvement order. On the most serious end of the scale is a Closure order where there is an immediate and grave threat to public health, a closure order may be made. This means that the operation must cease until the problem has been remedied. There was 6 closure orders made in Ireland in March 2017 alone so any concerns or contact made to the FSAI is taken very seriously and so you the consumer can be assured that your voice is heard and treated confidentially. The other remedy that Sean and Emma may have is to sue the restaurant for personal injuries suffered with the food poisoning but this would need to be documented with attendance at their doctor and obtaining of a medical report. All expenses incurred e.g. out of work losses, medicine, attendance at doctor should be kept and a claim could be made initially to the injuries board. Legal Quip : The dinner I was cooking for my family was going to be a surprise but the fire truck ruined it. If you have a legal query or need further information on any item addressed in this column please send in your query to mirs@gofree.indigo.ie Miriam McGillycuddy, Solicitor, Derryana, Ballyard, Tralee, County Kerry. WELCOME... HONG KONG’S FIRST ROSE OF TRALEE
CLARISSA Langley Coleman has been selected to represent Hong Kong for the first time in the world famous Rose of Tralee International Festival which will be held this year from 16-22 August. Clarissa, who’s grandmother is from Co Mayo, was born in Hong Kong and was raised in the US, Japan and Hong Kong and she is fluent in English, Chinese and Japanese. A film producer and entrepreneur living in Hong Kong, Clarissa said that she was extremely excited to represent Hong Kong and hopes to sing her now trademark Danny Boy in the Chinese language in Tralee. Marcus O’Connor, son of the late Florence O’Connor of Tralee, one of the original founders of the Festival, was delighted to bring the Rose of Tralee back to Asia, along with fantastic support from the local Irish community. Marcus, a 21-year resident of 4

Hong Kong, said: “Seeing the affection and support that the Irish community has had for the Rose of Tralee competition in Hong Kong has made me proud of my late father’s enduring legacy. Much like the Irish diaspora themselves, it has now travelled far and wide across the globe taking with it the spirit of what’s truly wonderful and unique about Kerry and Ireland. I wonder if on that fateful night in Harty’s Bar, if Dad ever imagined his son looking on proudly, as Roses hoping to represent Hong Kong lit up the room.” Clarissa Langley Coleman will be one of the 64 Roses from Ireland and Irish communities around the globe who will take part in the week-long festival before the 2017 Rose of Tralee is crowned in the Festival Dome live on RTÉ on Tuesday 22nd August.

Wonder Woman is the newest film in the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) that is an adaptation of the famous comic hero. The film follows Diana on her road to becoming Wonder Woman. In this film, Gal Gadot’s Diana meets Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor, a spy for the Allies in WW1and she leaves her exclusive homeland and goes with him to the front line in France to bring an end to the war. Wonder Woman is the third entry in the DCEU (the others being Batman VS Superman and Suicide Squad) and is by far the best. The director Patty Jenkin’s vision has really come to life. She directs it clearly and the film is visually stunning and the slow-motion action sequences really stand out. Not only is this an exceptional superhero film but it’s also a good war film as well. The war scenes are gritty and muddy and you can feel the suffering of the soldiers in the trenches. The film also has a beautiful score composed by Rupert Gregson-Williams. It accompanies the film’s themes of hope and resilience. Gal Gadot fits the role of Wonder Woman perfectly and shines in the part. She can believably hold her own in the fight scenes and is more than capable in the scenes where she must show her acting range. Chris Pine also excels as Gal Gadots co-lead. He brings a roguish charm to a character that could have been bland and unoriginal. One flaw the film does have is that in the third act the reliance on special effects becomes a bit tiring. Overall, however, it is a very good superhero film with a relevant message of courage and hope and refreshing with its female lead. Mr. Movies Fact: This is the first female-directed live-action film to have a $100 million+ budget. The film's estimated budget is $150 million.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... SUPERVALU GETS BEHIND THE BALL THIS SUMMER WITH KERRY GAA As a long-standing sponsor of the GAA All Ireland Football Championships, SuperValu is getting #BehindTheBall this summer and is set to reinforce its unwavering support and commitment to local communities in Kerry by introducing a new campaign that will help inspire the future stars of the GAA and encourage more people to volunteer for their local GAA club. Kicking off in all SuperValu stores nationwide, SuperValu will commence a nine-week programme which will see individual retailers donate 55,000 GAA ‘First Touch’ footballs to clubs across the country, an ambitious initiative designed to get children as young as six playing football and exercising more regularly. Through the initiative, SuperValu customers will receive ‘#BehindTheBall’ tokens, which they can then use to allocate to a local GAA club of their choice at the instore collection points. Furthermore, SuperValu will also roll out a number of GAA volunteer camps throughout the summer designed to encourage parents to volunteer at their local club and give them the skills to teach and develop the kids across all aspects of the game. Families will be urged to get #BehindTheBall
and play an active role in their clubs with the intention of strengthening clubs volunteer pools and getting inactive families more active in their community. These events will be supported by SuperValu’s line-up of exciting GAA ambassadors, including Dublin GAA’s Bernard Brogan, Kerry GAA’s Donnchadh Walsh, Mayo GAA’s Lee Keegan and Monaghan GAA’s Conor McManus. As a winner of two All-Ireland medals, Donnchadh Walsh realises just how important it is to get children playing sport from an early an age as possible. Playing with Cromane GAA since he was a boy, Walsh knows that a plentiful supply of footballs is vital to club members and to the club’s development. Donnchadh is urging shoppers to support their local GAA club by getting behind SuperValu’s new initiative. Commenting at the launch, Walsh said, “It’s a privilege to support SuperValu’s exciting ‘Behind The Ball’ campaign. I can still remember the first time I got to train and play with Cromane. It’s a very special memory that turned out to be the start of an amazing journey, which has seen me play at every level for club and county not to mention the fact that I made friends for life along the way. So make sure you visit your local SuperValu
store and support your local GAA club. Whether you’re a member of a GAA club or not this is a really positive way to give back to children in your local community.” Now in its eighth season as an official partner of the All Ireland Football Championship, SuperValu’s network of retailers continue to show a remarkable commitment to the sport, not just at national but also regional level and typify how SuperValu can have a direct benefit to the local communities in which they are embedded. Whether it’s facilitating in-store fundraisers, sponsoring jerseys or coaching the kids in the local communities, it is estimated that the retailers donate circa over €1,000,000 per annum
collectively to local clubs throughout the country. Commenting at the launch, Peter Keane of Keane’s SuperValu in Killorglin, said, “We have a long-standing partnership with the GAA and we work tirelessly to ensure that our sponsorship activities have a direct impact on our local communities here in Kerry, enabling us to become a genuine force for building better communities. As Kerry Minor Football Manager I know how important it is to get children involved in sport at an early age and the benefits this brings to their health and wellbeing. This year, we aim to inspire more children and their families to get involved in the GAA as we encourage the county to get active and get behind the ball.”

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: HELP WITH SCHOOL COSTS
with Adam Kavanagh AKA Mr Movie reviews
Question
I am the parent of a four-year-old daughter who will start Primary School in September. My only income is from my One-Parent Family Payment and €90 I get each week from a part-time job. I don’t get maintenance and I’m worried about the extra costs involved in sending my daughter to school. Is there State help available?

As you are getting a social welfare payment, you may be entitled to the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BSCFA) to help meet the cost of your daughter’s school uniform and footwear, as long as your weekly income is below a certain level. You are currently receiving a One-Parent Family Payment of €222.80 (including a child payment) and earning €90, so your weekly income is €312.80, which is below the income limit of €418.10 for a lone parent with one child and will entitle you to BSCFA. The BSCFA payment this year is €125 for a qualified child aged 4–11 years. The Department of Social Protection pays BSCFA automatically in many cases. If you haven’t already received a letter from them, you will need to apply by 30 September 2017. Application forms are available on the Department’s website, welfare.ie, or from your local Intreo Centre or Social Welfare Branch Office. A form can also be requested by SMS (text message) by texting ‘Form BTSCFA’ followed by your name and address to 51909 or by emailing the Department at BSCFA@ welfare.ie. The Department of Education and Skills also runs a School Books Grant Scheme which is available to Statefunded schools to help with the cost of school books. Some schools will help with the cost of buying textbooks or run a Textbook Rental Scheme. You should contact your daughter’s school principal to find out if this option is available at her new school. You can get detailed information on the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance on citizensinformation.ie.

Whats the background to Nutrifit?
Curves Tralee opened in 2004 and initially the emphasis was on 30 minute exercise....Circuit Training,a system developed in America using machines designed for a womans body only. "Conor and I had tremendous success with this but we realized over time that Majella and Conor exercise was only part of the equation and that education on food and lifestyle was essential... so this led to the birth of our new business 'Nutrifit for Women' says Majella. “We now offer a more comprehensive service of 'One to One' Nutritional Consultations for both members and non members". Hello my beautiful friends! I hope you’re all having a fabulous week.
This week I asked on my Snapchat (@bexblah) what you wanted to see, and my most requested was a post on My Favourite Makeup Brushes & Tools. So that’s what I’m gonna do. If you have any requests or suggestions on anything that you want to see you can add me on snapchat, message me on my Facebook, or email me at bexblahbeauty@ gmail.com. I’m all about what you want to see so if there’s any products you want my thoughts on etc let me know.
MAKEUP BRUSHES & TOOLS
When I started doing my own makeup I literally used my fingers to apply foundation and eyeshadow for a good while, I couldn’t even imagine doing that now. Insane. Today I’m going to talk all about my favourite makeup tools and brands that I recommend.
THE BEAUTY BLENDER – If you haven’t applied your makeup with a beauty blender, you are seriously missing out. SERIOUSLY. And I’m not talking about the brands that made dupes of the beauty blender, I’m talking about The Original Beauty Blender! It gives your makeup an amazing flawless finish, it can be used for foundation, concealer, cream contour, or even to blend powder bronzer. All you have to do is squeeze it in water to dampen it and then bounce it on your face to apply whichever product. You can get it on BeautyBay for €20 with free delivery. Inglot 6SS Brush – This baby is my
absolute ride or die eyeshadow blender brush. I am obsessssed with it! I think I have about 4 at this stage. It is on the more pricey side of my makeup brush collection at €20 but I can justify it because it’s simply amazing, it blends eyeshadow like no other brush.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Duo Sided Brow Brush – You all know
that ABH is my brow brand, I use nothing else on them. I only got this brush when I was in Toronto in January because I lost my other one but now it’s all I use. The spoolie/ brush side is used to comb through the brows and the angled side is the perfect size to apply product with precision. You can get one on BeautyBay for €17.40.
So those are my absolute favourite brushes/tools. I have multiples of all of them and simply couldn’t do my makeup without them. As for brands, if you go for EcoTools, Blank Canvas Cosmetics, Morphe or Sigma you’ll be safe. The next brushes on my wishlish when I get home from Thailand are definitely Zoeva brushes, I have wanted them for too long! You don’t have to get the most expensive brushes out there for them to be good, all of the brands and brushes I mentioned are mostly under €20. 24

FITNESS!
HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS! HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK. THIS WEEK I’LL BE TALKING ABOUT ABS. TIPS FOR FLAT ABS
So many people want that washboard flat stomach. The frustrating reality is that the midsection is one of the trickiest areas to tone. That’s why even people dedicated to regular exercise often can’t iron out their abs quickly, it takes time. There is no such thing as ‘spot reducing’. You can go to 1000 abs classes in the gym but if your total bodyfat percentage isn’t low enough, you won’t see abs! Anyway, your goal shouldn’t be someone else’s body, it should be feeling the absolute best in your own skin. Think Whole-Body Exercise When it comes to abdominal strength, you shouldn’t train the body in isolation. People have this misconception that the best way to strengthen the abs is to get on the floor and do a thousand crunches, If we could spot reduce, our jaws would be hollow, we probably work the jaw muscle in talking and eating more than any other, and none of us have hollow jaws. You have to see the abs as a 360-degree core, you want to develop strength and flexibility around that core. Crunches are fine, at first, but relatively quickly, you’ll have to progress to something else to get that area worked. The best exercises for toning your abs are actually ones like squats and deadlifts as they target the entire body. Examine Your Diet and Digestion If you have abdominal fat you can have great ab strength and great posture, but you won’t have a flat abdominal or a sixpack. You have to change your diet and increase your energy output. In other words, eat the right foods and move more. You need to burn off more calories than you take in to reduce body fat. Unfortunately for many people, the abdominals are a place where fat tends to accumulate. If you have a high sugar and salt diet, you will more than likely hold fat around your midsection. Don’t eliminate Carbs. So many people, especially females, think any form of carbs are the devil. WRONG. If carbs are too low for too long of a time,
26
TRALEE ADVERTISER
your energy levels will drop, cravings will become extremely intense, and your resting metabolic rate will plummet which means you will burn LESS calories. You can eat carbs, they’re very important for energy. Just be sure they aren’t high in salt or sugar! Take Things Slow There are no fast fixes. Fat loss is not linear. Even the promised quick fixes end up being temporary. It’s a goal. You have to plan on a slow and steady progression. Most people will experience set backs, roadblocks, and utter frustration along the way. Rewards come with time and consistency. Don’t drink your calories. Before you do a single tummy crunch, think about what you’re putting into your body. Most drinks like, coke, some coffees, even juices contain around 200 calories/ Those are EMPTY calories, that have little to no nutritional value. So skip the high sugar and calorie dense drinks in favour of better hydration, like mixed fruit juice with no sugar added, or water with a squeeze of lemon. Don’t skip on Cardio By getting good, heart-thumping cardio session a few times a week, you’ll tone your abs (along with everything else) and be heart-healthy and fit! Good examples of cardio are running, interval sprints, uphill walking, jogging, spinning, the cross trainer, and swimming.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL ADDRESSED BY MEP NÍ RIADA ABOUT BREXIT CHALLENGE Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada has this week addressed Kerry County Council in Tralee as negotiations between the EU and Britain get underway in Brussels. The Ireland South MEP told the council that Irish politicians needed to unite to fight Brexit. “It is already accepted that Brexit will have huge political and economic ramifications for Ireland. “All levels of Government and all politicians must be aware of the risks we face and we must all work together to ameliorate those risks. “Our agri-food and export industries, that rely so heavily on all-Ireland trade and on the British market, will be hit. “We may yet witness the re-
imposition of a hard border on our island, bringing with it hardship for workers, barriers to trade and a very physical manifestation of partition. “Brexit is not just an issue for the north of Ireland or for those who export to Britain. “Our road transport links to Europe, via Britain, will become more complicated, as will our processes for welcoming tourists to our country. “On the Budgets Committee I can see the huge gap that will be left in the European Union’s finances when Britain departs, which will lead to cuts to EU programmes in Ireland, including potential cuts to CAP. “We must be united in dealing with 26 other member-
states and with Britain in the negotiations that begin this week . “We must call for specialdesignated status within the EU for the north of Ireland. We must convince other EU Governments that a fair, sustainable and mutually beneficial agreement is the preferred outcome, and we
must build relationships with those in British politics who are against a Tory Brexit that pits Little England against the world. “With political vision and unity of purpose we can overcome the challenges posed by Brexit. “

For two of the Kerry stores awarded, the expression ‘spring clean’ does not exist in their phrase book, as store hygiene and cleanliness remains a constant on the top of their priority list. For these stores who were presented with the prestigious Excellence Ireland Supreme National Hygiene Award – Q Mark, accredited by the Excellence Ireland Quality Association (EIQA), it was a culmination of three years of hard work and attention to detail. This coveted supreme prize on the night was bestowed onto retailers nationwide who have gone above and beyond in maintaining the highest

TORQUING CARS! DRIVERS IN LONDON COULD FACE FIRST PAY-PER-MILE ROAD CHARGE
DRIVERS IN London could face a pay-per-mile road charge, as proposals are considered to cut the level of harmful air pollution and congestion within the capital. The London mayor will this week announce a transport strategy that is aimed at cutting 3m vehicle journeys a day, and increasing the proportion of journeys made by public transport, from the current level of 64% to 80%. It is also expected to include the idea of new “healthy routes”, which would see vehicles banned and priority given to pedestrians and cyclists. Were the proposals to be put in to practice, it would represent Britain’s first pay-as-you-go road pricing system. Although the idea is nothing new, past Governments have rejected the approach, fearful of a backlash from drivers. The pay-per-mile road charge would likely replace the existing £11.50 Congestion charge, and the imminent “toxicity charge” (T-charge) which will mean drivers of the most polluting vehicles pay an additional £10 to enter central London, from October 23. In a statement, the mayor said that Transport for London would work with individual London boroughs to develop other traffic management policies. This could include localised systems that charge motorists to drive into an individual area, or a workplace parking levy. Other proposals include banning car parks in new housing developments to force residents to consider green alternatives to their own vehicle. Edmund King, president of the AA, told The Times: “If it is just a straight road pricing scheme, it is going to be very difficult to sell to the public. Drivers don’t trust the government to come up with a workable scheme and that’s the danger here.” (Sunday Times )
TVR TO UNVEIL NEW 200MPH V8 SPORTS CAR AT GOODWOOD REVIVAL
British carmaker TVR will unveil a new high-performance model at the Goodwood Revival in September, the first launch by the company in over a decade. We know only a handful of details about the as-yet unnamed model. It will weigh around 1,200kg, and will be powered by a 5.0-litre Cosworthdeveloped V8. An expected power output of 480bhp will result in a 200mph top speed and a 0-60mph time of just 4 seconds. A limited run of 500 ‘Launch Edition’ cars, priced at £90,000, is already selling fast, with buyers already having seen the new car at a private event. This will be TVR’s first new model for well over a decade. Scheduled to coincide with the British company’s 70th anniversary, the new car’s launch will be the first to take place at the Goodwood Revival in the event’s 19-year history.
RUSSIAN BILLIONAIRE ANCHORS SUPERYACHT IN FRONT OF STATUE OF LIBERTY
Tourists in New York are complaining that a Russian-born billionaire’s megayacht is blocking their views of the Statue of Liberty. Le Grand Bleu is owned by Eugene Schvidler, one of Russia’s oligarchs who made his money in the energy industry after the collapse of the Soviet Union. He was given the yacht by his close friend Roman Abramovich, his partner in the investment and asset management company Millhouse. At 370 feet, it is counted as one of the world’s largest private yachts, and has been moored close to New York harbour’s most famous landmark since the start of June much to the annoyance of visitors. Roland Lewis, president of the Waterfront Alliance, a non-profit group that works to protect the area’s shores, told The New York Post: “It’s the people’s statue versus a person’s private boat. The US Coast Guard has the power to move on vehicles but only if they are creating an obstacle, not just spoiling tourists’ photographs. Mr Schvidler, 53, and his wife, Zara, also own a $28 million London townhouse in Belgravia and Chateau Thenac, in the Bergerac region of France, where he produces kosher wine from the vineyards.

TORQUING CARS! CAR ADVICE WITH HONEST JOHN (DAILY TELEGRAPH) If your car has developed a fault, turn to Honest John by emailing honestadvice@telegraph.co.uk
COLD COMFORT FIRM
I have never had a car with low-profile tyres because they don’t seem to give such a smooth and comfortable ride. I am looking to buy a one-year-old Audi Q3 S-Line Plus, but it has low-profile tyres. Is that a problem? GH H.J.....Bang, crash, wallop. You’ll feel every bump. You might damage the wheel rims on a pothole. The tyres will wear out faster and are more expensive to replace. Don’t buy a car on big wheels and low-profile tyres unless you plan to race it. Don’t ever go lower than 55-profile.
RAISE A BLADE
My daughter’s 2010 Vauxhall Corsa has a problem with the offside windscreen wiper, which is very noisy and out of alignment with the other blade. What could the problem be? PD It’s fairly simple to remove the arm and relocate it as long as the spindle is not worn. The additional problem may be the angle of the blade against the screen - it might help if you twist it so that is at a right angle to the screen.
SOME LEAK IT HOT
We lease a Mini Countryman Cooper S but don’t use it often. I take it for a 100-mile drive if it has been standing for three weeks, but is there anything else I could do? NS You’re doing all that is necessary. Make sure you run it on the highest-octane petrol with the best additive package. Check the oil and coolant regularly. This engine has a pump to keep water circulating through the turbo if you switch off when it is extremely hot. That system has been known to spring leaks.
FORD TO IMPORT FOCUS MODELS TO US FROM CHINA FROM 2019 Ford Motor Co will export the next-generation Focus models from China to North America in 2019, rather than from Mexico as earlier planned, the company said on Tuesday. The current Focus will be phased out of production in Wayne, Michigan, in mid-2018, according to Joe Hinrichs, president of global operations. The Wayne plant will begin building a new Ranger compact truck in late 2018. No US jobs will be affected, Ford said, adding that it employs more US hourly workers and builds more vehicles in the United States than any other carmaker. The redesigned Focus for North America will be built at a joint-venture plant in Chongqing, China, Hinrichs said. Earlier this year, Ford cancelled plans for a new $1.8 billion (€1.6 billion) small-car plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, and said it would build the new Focus instead at an existing plant in Hermosillo. The decision to shift from Hermosillo to Chongqing, where Ford has an existing Focus plant, was made “over the last couple months,” according to Hinrichs, and will save the carmaker $500 million in tooling costs. Ford also said some future variants of the new Focus will be shipped later from Europe. The Focus is produced at the Saarlouis Assembly plant in Germany.

IT’S ONLY A JOKE A BLONDE’S BRAIN AT WORK
A blonde, a brunette and a redhead all work for a female boss who always goes home early. “Hey girls,” says the brunette. “Let’s go home early tomorrow. She’ll never know.” So the next day, they all leave right after their boss. The brunette gets some extra gardening done, the redhead goes to a bar, and the blonde goes home to find her husband having an affair with her female boss. She quietly sneaks out of the house and returns at her normal time. “That was fun,” says the brunette. “We should do it again sometime.” “No way,” says the blonde. “I almost got caught.”
THANK GOD
A man is at a looking to buy a horse, the horse trader leads him to a majestic white stallion. The horse trader said: “This horse can understand three commands, if you want it to walk, say ‘Praise God’, if you want it to gallop say ‘Thank God’ and if you want it to stop say ‘Oh My God’. “ The man did not believe the horse trader, so he requested to try it out. He got onto the horse and then said: “Praise god.” The horse started walking. He then said “Thank god” and the horse started galloping towards the end of the cliff. The man panicked and forgot the phrase to stop the horse, it looked as if he was about to fall, he shouted out of fear: “Oh my god!”, the horse stopped. The man, being relieved, said “Thank god...”

A PRIEST IS TAKING A CAB HOME FROM CHURCH
A priest is taking a cab home from church after a long day of services. It’s night and it’s raining heavily. Suddenly the taxi hits a pothole. The driver mutters under his breath “F**k!” Seconds later, they hit another pothole and the driver says “S**t!” The priest has finally had enough, “Son, don’t use these words, they anger our Good Lord. Say for instance, ‘Lord help us’” The cabbie reluctantly agrees. As they drive on, they hit a really big pothole and the entire wheel falls off! The cabbie remembering the priest’s words says “Lord help us!” Suddenly, the wheel stops, rolls back, and snaps back on! “What the f**k?” said the priest.

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR GREAT WEEK IN CAMOGIE, HURLING AND SOCCER FOR OUR YOUNG STARS: Normally I start this column with some thoughts – or ramblings as some might say – but this week I am changing and giving pride of place to some of our top young sports persons who were in action in the Feile and Kennedy Cups. CILLARD CAMOGIE CLUB LAND JOHN WEST FEILE TITLE: Cillard make it two in a row: County Feile winners Causeway and Runners-Up Cillard represented Kerry which was a huge honour for these two clubs and it was the latter that again brought home the silverware. Credit also goes to Causeway who put up a great effort to reach the quarter finals. Cillard Camogie Club made it back to back wins as they brought home the John West Feile Na Gael 2017 Division 6 All Ireland title. Based at the Carrickshock GAA club in Hugginstown they started their campaign with a 3-02 to 0-00 defeat of Wexford Geraldine O’Hanrahan’s. A well-deserved break was due to the Players where they enjoyed a Parade, Mass and a disco at their Host Carrickshock who also hosted Hospital/Herbertstown GAA Hurling Clubs. Despite the Club having a Community Centre and disco it was heard on the grapevine that over 100 girls and boys spent the evening on the pitch having a puck around and many friendships were made. An early 7am start saw the girls head to Carlow for the last four clash with St Aidan’s from Wexford and again the Kerry players were by far the more skilful winning 4-10 to 2.02. With the Cillard banner raised high they travelled the short distance to Ferns GAA Centre of Excellence where both the hurling and Camogie Finals were to be played out. Their Mentors Joe Walsh and John Sheehan did a fantastic job of getting the girls into form for what was to be a lovely spectacle of Camogie between Rower Inistiogue of Kilkenny. The two best teams of the division rose to the occasion and at half time the score was 2-1 to 0-1 and the valiant Cillard side went on to retain their lead in the second half to finish 3-2 to 0-4. All members of the team contributed

to this outstanding result this weekend. The Club would like to thank and acknowledge the commitment from the Player s and note that there were many young players on the panel travelling to Feile for the first time! Kilflynn’s Amy O’Sullivan lifted the Cup to huge cheers from the squad, mentors and great travelling support. The homecomings in Kilflynn, Ardfert and Kilmoyley were richly deserved by all involved in what was a huge effort from many different strands, all of which made a Causeway, Kerry Feile Winners were in Division 5 were based in Kilmacow, Kilkenny for the weekend. Losing their 1st game to Rathgarogue-Cushinstown, Wexford they went on to win their next 2 games against Kiltegan & Kilmacow which saw them into the Cup1/4 final on Saturday evening. Leading at half-time by 1pt unfortunately Brideoga, Mayo put in a strong 2nd half to win by 2pts. Brideoga went on to win out the final against RathgarogueCushinstown. The girls can take heart from a great team performance on and off the pitch. They are a young team and with only 4 of the girl’s overage for next year know that their turn will come. TRALEE PARNELLS AT OUR FIRST EVER NATIONAL FÉILE: The Tralee Parnell’s boy’s excitement and anticipation reached fever pitch ahead of their departure for their participation in the clubs first ever Feile. This was a huge achievement for the club that was revived in 2012 and has grown year on year. The club is now an integral part of the Kerry hurling and camogie landscape in the county. The Feile journey began last April winning the Kerry qualifier and then the regionals in Abbeydorney. As they lifted the trophy thoughts turned to the Feile weekend in June and the club left no stone unturned and brought in Martin Fogarty, the National Hurling manager and a former selector/ coach with Brian Cody to do a session with the boys. At the Feile the boys put up a very good show and ended the Group stages with 2 wins – over Buncrana and Setanta Hurling club. They did go down to St Kevin’s of

Cork in the knock out game but came home with their heads held high and were congratulated on their efforts by Parnell’s Chairman Dermot Reen and Secretary David Brick. KENNEDY SHIELD BACK IN KERRY: Kerry certainly ended their Kennedy Cup soccer campaign on a high winning their last 3 games and defeating West Cork in the Shield Final 2-0. Kerry won this section in 2014 and of course the Cup itself in 2015 so its 3 trophies in 3 years. In the semi-final on Thursday the boys put in one of their best performances when they saw off Cavan / Monaghan 3-0 thanks to goals from Callum Russell, Cian McMahon and William Shine. The aim of all the teams is to get to finals Friday and Kerry were in action at 11am against our neighbours and controlled the game from the start and went 1-0 up through William Shine in the 27th minute. John O’Connor wrapped up the scoring inside the last 10 minutes to send the squad, management and supporters home happy after SFAI Chairman John Early presented them with the trophy and winners medals. IT’S NOW THE GIRLS TURN AT THE GAYNOR’S: With the Kennedy Cup 2017 done and dusted - Kerry winning the Shield after 4 wins and 2 defeats over the week – it is now the turn of the Kerry girls in the FOTA Resort Gaynor Cup. For the first time in the history of the competition both age groups – the u14’s and u16’s – will run simultaneously at UL in Limerick. There will be 41 Leagues on campus meaning there will be over 800 girls playing in the soccer tournament that kicks off early this Thursday, June 22nd and runs until Sunday afternoon. The 14’s, coached by Rebecca Horgan and Julie Cronin, are in Group 4 where they will play North Tipperary Schoolboys/Girls League at 2pm on Thursday and the Inishowen League on Friday morning at 10am. Depending on results Kerry will then play in the Cup, Shield or Plate Competition. The 16’s, coached by Tom Kelly and Phil Bates, are in Group 2 and they have an 11am start on Thursday taking on Sligo / Leitrim.
FESTIVAL OF FOOTBALL: With FOTA Resort coming on board as title sponsors of the Gaynor Tournament they will be hosting a skills competition with stays at the Resort for the winner and her family and squad. There will also be a Women’s National League game taking place on Saturday evening giving the girls a chance to see some of the countries top female soccer players in action. TRALEE GIRLS SOCCER: One of the disappointments is that there is still no Tralee girls playing soccer as neither of the Schoolboys teams have girl’s teams yet! This will be a priority of the League going forward. TRALEE PITCH AND PUTT PLAYERS TEE IT UP IN THE MUNSTERS: Last weekend at a sun drenched ESB course in Cork city the Munster Stroke-Play Finals took place. On Saturday it was the turn of the Junior gents and Ladies grades. Five players represented their clubs in the Junior grade, it wasn’t a good day for Tralee players Tim Scannell and Tommy Higgins who both missed the cut of four over par. However Chris Fleming from Newmarket and Pa Byrne from Tralee both shot one under par and Tralee player David Hobbert shot three under to lie in second going into the final round five shots behind Fermoy’s Keith Flynn who shot a brilliant eight under. In the final round the heat played a huge factor with players wilting in the heat and scoring proving very difficult. David Hobbert came home with one under overall but was pipped into third on back eighteen by Mark Jordan from Raffeen Creek who also came home on one under par. Keith Flynn went on to win the Junior grade by eight shots. In the Ladies Lisa O’Connor from the Tralee club played well in the searing heat of the afternoon but never got into contention.

In the final round both Chris and Alan posted one under with Alan finishing on eleven under. In the end three players finished on thirteen under and a ply-off ensued where Parteen’s Conor Fahey prevailed. On Sunday afternoon it was the turn of the Seniors where Tralee’s Tony Blake and the Deerpark duo Damien Fleming and John McGrath teed off. Tony Blake and John McGrath both missed the cut of nine under with John missing out by one shot. It was Damien who lead the field with fifteen under going into the final round. In the final round a few drop shots cost Damien and three players ended on twenty-one under to set up another nine hole play-off where Bryan Delaney won out on the fifth sudden death hole.
