PARK FC TRALEE WIN OUT AGAINST WATERFORDS VILLA FC IN LAST 32 NATIONAL CUP TIE
A large contingent of supporters, parents and players made the long trip to Waterford city on Saturday for this last 32 National Cup tie. Villa FC are probably the biggest club in the South East but came up short against the stronger Tralee team .who won 2-0 .It was great to see Christy Leahy make the long trip to Waterford to support the boys. A gentleman and great supporter of all things Park.Check out Pat Harnetts Sports pages at the back of this issue . Ballygarry House, a luxurious 4 star country house hotel and spa, has been listed in the top five hotels in Ireland in the 2018 TripAdvisor Travellers Choice Awards published this week. Ballygarry was the top four star hotel in Kerry, also beating many five star hotels. These awards reflect the opinions of guests who have stayed in the hotel which have been collected by TripAdvisor over the past year. The hotel has been owned and managed by three generations of the McGillicuddy Family and this year celebrates 60 years in business. This award is particularly pleasing to Padraig McGillicuddy who leads a team of enthusiastic and dedicated professionals, that specialise in delivering a seamless experience and exceeding expectations for all the guests of Ballygarry House Hotel. “The TripAdvisor Award reflects the dedication of our team, the majority of whom have been with us for many years and have proven to be popular amongst our guests over that time”, said Padraig. “While we have regularly featured in Trip Advisor Awards in top 10 and top 25 hotels, this year we have gained our highest place ever”, he added. Ballygarry House Hotel welcomes visitors from all over Ireland and abroad, many of whom return on a regular basis. It enjoys a wonderful location at the foot of the Slieve Mish Mountains, with direct access to the Ballyseedy Woods and the hotel’s 12 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens; is a few kilometres from the most beautiful beaches in Ireland, surrounded by five championship links golf courses, and scenery from the Wild Atlantic Way including the Dingle Peninsula. It enjoys a wonderful location near all major road networks and is also accessible by rail and air at Kerry Airport.

Medical Matters DR. DAVID BUCKLEY TALKS ABOUT INFLUENZA (“THE FLU”).
Influenza is a viral illness that usually spreads in the winter. The typical symptoms are a high fever, runny nose, chesty cough and aches and pains. In the majority of people it is an uncomfortable but harmless condition that will settle within 5 to 7 days. Antibiotics will not help with the flu and can sometimes make things worse by causing stomach upset and diarrhoea. The best treatment for the flu is to control the temperature with paracetamol or ibuprofen (Neurofen) and give plenty of isotonic fluids. Keep the patient at home until the symptoms settle (usually 5 to 7 days). However you should phone your GP if you or your child has one of the following problems : • Symptoms lasting longer than 7 days. • Persisting vomiting and not keeping down isotonic fluids. • Rash.
• Headache not responding to Calpol, Paracetamol or Nurofen. • An ear ache. • Breathlessness, confusion or drowsiness. People whose immune system is depressed (e.g. diabetes, chronic heart or lung disease, on chemotherapy or other drugs that depress the immune system) may need oral anti viral medication (e.g. “Tamiflu”) as soon as they start to develop symptoms. These people should also have the flu vaccine every autumn as should everyone over the age of 65. It is not too late to get the vaccine. The flu vaccine is free if you are in an at risk group but you may be charged a consultation fee, unless you have a medical card or a GP visit card. The flu vaccine doesn't contain any live viruses - it cannot give you the flu.

How are the New Year’s Resolutions going? Many people talk about what they want and never take the steps to get there. Changes cannot unfortunately be made just because it is a New Year! There are many different reasons for not making that change last - limiting beliefs, not believing it’s possible, lack of emotional, mental and spiritual skills, not being able to set priorities and manage activities, and procrastination. Heal Your Life ® Teaching (based on the philosophy of writer Louise Hay) can help you overcome these blocks. Heal Your Life Teachers promote the development of inner skills like meditation, visualization, and affirmations, more than other personal development programs. Join me on a one day or weekend Heal Your Life Workshop if you want to: • learn how to achieve goals faster • learn the mental, emotional, and spiritual life skills for balance and success • learn and use techniques to clear the past and present challenges • learn the value of achieving your full potential • develop a deeper intuitive/spiritual connection Heal Your Life ‘Wellness Weekend’ Workshop in Tralee on 10 & 11 February, 30 June & 1 July, 1 & 2 September 2018 (10-6pm) ‘Managing with Heart and Mind’ (Louise Hay philosophy in work) 1 day Workshop in Tralee on Friday: 4 May, 3 August, 5 October (10-6pm) ... led by Alison Boardman, licensed Heal Your Life® Teacher and Coach Contact: alison.boardman01@gmail.com + 353 87 9341613 (what’s app)
RESOLUTIONS... HELP OR HINDRANCE?? So often the word itself instills fear in me....the utter need to be PERFECT in an IMPERFECT world...everything needs to be black and white no grey area and the words No/off limits/bad food/all or nothing/perfection are all associated with this phenomenon of New Year Resolutions .Let us be honest.... it would be a lot easier to just live with Consistency, Balance and Moderation at all times rather than turbo boosting in January and being all burnt out in February!!! My goal this year was to challenge myself to be more consistent in my life but to try and make small changes .Each month I aim to challenge myself to 1 and only 1 change that I work on for that month .Research has shown it takes 21 days to form a habit and 66 times of doing that same thing to form a habit so by my calculations by the end of the year all going well I will have installed 12 new small yet significant changes into my life. Ultimately by doing it this way I have made lifestyle changes that I will benefit from long term rather than imposing un realistic New Years Resolutions on myself that most often have run their course well before the onset of Spring. By setting smaller goals and achieving these goals we instil a sense of accomplishment rather than failure associated with the dreaded Resolutions. This POSITIVE ENERGY will then give you the self belief to work on the next months goals again...So remember slow and steady always wins the race. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... KERRY ETB STUDENTS AWARDS NIGHT The annual Kerry ETB Student Award ceremony took place on Friday 19 January in 2019. This is a key event in the annual calendar when , Kerry ETB, celebrate the achievements of students and learners from their Post Primary Schools and Youthreach centres.
Sixty-six student awards were presented at this ceremony which is a very special occasion for all of the Award Recipients, their Parents/Guardians, Families and Teachers. The Award Recipients are excellent role models for their Schools and Centres. Students received awards for academic excellence, involvement in school life, peer mentoring, Transition Year achievements and leadership. Kieran Lucid, former student of Kerry ETB School Causeway Comprehensive was the guest speaker on the night. Kieran hails from Ballyheigue, County Kerry. He has a Bachelors Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering Studies and a Masters in Business Informa-
tion Systems from University College Cork. Kieran began his career in kdb+ in 2006 and progressed on to work at numerous institutions including Bank of America, Liquidnet, Barclays Capital and Deutsche Bank. He set up his own data consultancy company QuantumKDB Ltd in 2011 and successfully sold it in a multimillion euro deal in 2016. As a strong advocate of technology he focused on technical sales in non-traditional industries which he recognised had a huge growth potential. From passion and positivity to leadership and ambition, Kieran perfectly embodies the entrepreneurial spirit while remaining loyal to his family and community. His main advice to the would-be entrepreneurs in the audience was “Successful start-up founders are getting younger by the year as the barriers to entry continue to lower, and indeed it’s never been easier to bring an idea to life in a short time with a small team.” These awards also included the Best Oral Irish Junior Cer-
tificate Award as it is a priority in the Kerry ETB strategy to support and encourage the love for the Irish language. This award is sponsored by the Lucey family in memory of Kathleen Lucey, RIP, former Irish teacher in Tralee Community College. This award is especially significant this year as sadly Kathleen’s husband Paul, also a former teacher in Tralee Community College, passed away this December. It was Paul who introduced this award for the first time in 2013 and Kerry ETB would like to sincerely thank the Lucey family and offer them our deepest sympathies. In his speech Colm McEvoy quoted Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. Kerry Diocesan Youth Services (KDYS) deliver a significant proportion of our Youthreach programme from its four centres in Tralee, Listowel and Killarney. Kerry ETB thanked Tim O’Donoghue and all the staff team involved in the delivery of the programme.
Ann O’Dwyer Director of Schools highlighted the excellence in teaching and learning in Kerry ETB schools. Ann also took the opportunity to welcome the new principal of the Killarney Two Mile Community National School, Catherine Barry to her first Kerry ETB Award ceremony. This is the first Kerry ETB State run, Multidenominational Community National School of its kind in Kerry and will service the Aghadoe and greater Killarney area and opened its doors in September 2017. It is currently enrolling for September 2018. “We are also working with the school Board of Management to develop a special award for the pupils of this school in future Awards events.” According to Ann. Kerry ETB also thanked the event sponsor Lee Strand Cooperative Creamery Ltd. for their kind sponsorship and also Mr Oliver Murphy, President of Tralee Institute of Technology (Tralee IT) for hosting the ceremony in the IT.

HAVE YOU A DOG BUDDING FOR STARDOM? OMG you guys!!! Legally Blonde The Musical is going on tour and the producers are holding auditions in Killarney to discover a four-legged star for the show! Dog auditions take place Saturday, February 10th at the Gleneagle Hotel. Could your pampered pet or family pouch be destined for fame? Producers of a major new tour of the smash-hit Broadway and West End musical Legally Blonde The Musical are on the hunt for four-legged stars in Kerry. EastEnders’ Rita Simons and Bill Ward, star of Coronation Street and Emmerdale are the human stars of the show. But Legally Blonde The Musical

also has two dogs in the cast - a Chihuahua called Bruiser and another called Rufus. Bruiser is already cast and will be on the road with the cast but producers have decided to hold auditions for ‘Rufus’ in every town and city on the tour. Auditions are being held at the Gleneagle Hotel on Saturday, February 10th 2018. Associate Director David Barrett said: “Legally Blonde The Musical is a show all about stereotypes and not judging a book by its cover and the dogs are no different in this. So whereas ‘Bruiser’ is the cute, tiny, adorable one, with ‘Rufus’ we are looking for the total opposite. We are

looking for a big, brutish, dog that only its mother could love - preferably a Bull Dog as in the film but we are certainly open to options.” Based on the Reese Witherspoon film, Legally Blonde The Musical earned seven Tony nominations and 10 Drama Desk Award nominations during its Broadway run. In the UK it was nominated for 5 Laurence Olivier Awards winning 3 including Best New Musical, and was nominated for 8 Whatsonstage Awards winning 4 including Best Musical.

HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK. Last week I was very good to myself - I got my nails & my hair done, gotta brighten up January somehow right? Anyway… I said I’d show you my new nails and the start of my latest hair journey/notion. I also have a very exciting announcement which I’ll talk more about at the end of this column.
NEW YEAR, NEW NAILS
NEW HAIR, NEW ME
I think you all know by now where I get my nails done… House of Glamour for those that don’t. They’re the best in the business (I literally get 5-6 weeks out of my nails if I want). Gintare in House of Glamour did this month’s set and I’m obsesssssing, as per usual. I just love having fresh nails. Especially when I’m doing makeup on clients I always want to have fresh nails as I feel more professional!
If you know me you’ll know that my hair has been every colour under the sun, and that after a bad Blue Black box dye experience, the only people I trust with my hair are Patrick’s The Hair Company. I hadn’t dyed my hair at all, for the past 3 years so I went slightly darker with my hair in November. Then this month I was either going to go darker again (basically black) or lighter, so I chose lighter and I love it! Michelle did a Fallyage Bronde colour (which I found out afterwards is a big hair trend for 2018… typical!) I do want to put some more lighter shades through the ends, but I also don’t want to compromise my hair health so I’ll wait a while for that.
Now onto the announcement… If you follow me on Instagram @itsrebeccashortt or Facebook ‘Rebecca Shortt Makeup’ you’ll already know this but… Due to popular demand I will be hosting another event ‘BEYOND THE GLAM’ in Benners Hotel Tralee on Sunday March 4th from 3-6pm. If you missed out on the first one be sure to mark your diary now so that you can make the next one! I’m so excited and plan to make this one bigger and better! BEXBLAH
FITNESS!
HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK. So it somehow is still January but it’s nearly over… and more than likely so are most peoples ‘NEW YEAR, NEW ME’ buzz. Why because they aren’t consistent with what they want, instead they set themselves unrealistic goals that they ‘have to’ reach within a certain amount of time. Rather than doing this torture to yourself, try something else… try to be consistent. Being consistent means knowing what you have to do, little by little, day in and day out, to reach your goals. It means that if you ‘mess up’ that you just go back to being consistent straight away. It’s all about balance and consistently doing
what needs to be done. There’s nothing wrong with being a bit more relaxed when it comes to all things health and fitness related, I’ve come to realise that being 100% on track 100% of the time for me personally, is not living. BUT. For the next 12 weeks I want to be consistent AF and see what results I can achieve. Maybe you have some area of your life where you’re putting in some of the work sometimes, so you’re not reaching your full potential because you’re not consistent. This is your sign, be consistent, put in the work you know needs to be put in.
CURRENT FAVOURITE WORKOUT
I’ve been really into doing full body workouts at the gym lately, just to change it up! Here’s my current favourite workout. WARMUP - HIIT sprints (20 secs on 40 secs off for 10-15 mins) WORKOUT - Weighted step ups 3 sets of 10 each leg Kettlebell swings 3 sets of 10 each arm Sumo Squats 3 sets of 10 Walking Lunges 3 sets of 10 GRACE FIT UK UPPER BODY SET • • • • •
Bicep curl Hammer curl 2 arm tricep extension Underhand kickback Arnold Press
• • •
Bent over one arm delt raise Upright row Front raise
Then sometimes after the workout to cool down I do 10 mins uphill walking.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... RESTORE FENIT DIVING BOARDS CAMPAIGN MEETING WITH KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL A delegation from Restore Fenit Diving Boards Campaign (RFDBC) held a very constructive, cordial and positive meeting with officials from Kerry County Council to consider the restoration of the diving boards at the bathing slip in Fenit, Tralee, Co. Kerry. The meeting took place at Áras an Chontae, Rathass, Tralee on Monday, 22nd January at 10.30am. The meeting was chaired by Mayor of Tralee, Norma Foley, who was instrumental in bringing the two parties together. Liam Doyle, Paddy Kissane, Mike O Neill, John Edwards and Billy Ryle were the members of the delegation while Kerry County Council was represented by Michael Scannell, Manager, Tralee Municipal District, Jean Foley, Municipal District Officer, Vincent Foley, Municipal Insurance Officer and Frank Hartnett, Municipal District Engineer.. In a wide reaching and comprehensive power point presentation, the members of the RFDBC retraced the almost 100yr tradition of diving at the bathing slip in Fenit. They put forward a compelling
argument as to why the time was opportune to restore the diving boards. They explained why Failte Ireland’s recognised the diving boards as an integral component of Fenit’s aqua-tourist infrastructure on Kerry’s Wild Atlantic Way coastal route. The presentation showed how the restoration of the diving boards was totally consistent with Kerry County Council Tourism Strategy 2016-2022, a major objective of which is to promote North Kerry as a ‘Family Friendly Location’ as well as promoting family friendly tourism by increasing the number of aqua-sport activities for children and teenagers. The delegation outlined the detailed technical work carried out over a six month period and presented a number of feasibility stage sketch designs of the new diving boards. The presentation concluded with a suggested agenda and timeline for progressing to the next stage of the project. A detailed but amiable
Feasibility stage sketch design of the new diving boards question and answer session with the officials followed the presentation. The officials acknowledged the quality of the presentation. The officials gave a commitment to examine the feasibility of the project from the perspective of design, cost and insurance. Mayor Foley suggested a period of four weeks for Kerry Council to explore the project. She will then convene a further meeting. RFDBC delegates were very pleased with the meeting and
the willingness of the officials to recognise the added value of the diving boards to the tourist infrastructure of the county. The delegates fully appreciate that Kerry County Council needs some time to have the project forensically examined by its own officials. RFDBC looks forward to the next meeting in four weeks’ time when, hopefully, further progress can be made in restoring the diving boards at the bathing slip in Fenit.
KCFE FOOTBALL GETS ON THE WINNING TRACK! Kerry College of Further Education Tralee had a great win in the Higher Education Championship on Wednesday January 24th in John Mitchel’s sports complex against Institute of Technology Tallaght. This is the first year KCFE have competed at this level and they are now through to a quarter final against University Ulster Magee. KCFE led by a point at half time having played with a strong wind. First half goals by Joe Looby and the ever dangerous Mikie Casey kept them in the game after a strong start from Tallaght. It was in the second half that KCFE showed their fighting spirit despite being reduced to fourteen men against a gale of wind. James Duggan ran the game from centre forward and Wayne Duggan from John Mitchels converted an 22

IT’S ONLY A JOKE A DOG AND A BUTCHER
A dog walks into a butchers shop and the butcher asks “What do you want”. The dog points to some steak in a glass case and the butcher says “How many pounds”, the dog barks twice “Anything else” asks the butcher. The dog points at some pork chops and barks four times. The butcher wraps up the steak and chops and puts them in the dogs mouth. He takes the money from a purse around the dogs neck and shows him out. A customer who has been watching in amazement follows the dog to a house where it jumps up and rings the bell. The owner comes to the door and the customer says “What a remarkable dog you have there” “Remarkable my arse” says the owner. “That’s the second time this week he’s forgotten his bloody keys!”
DOCTOR’S VISIT
A gorgeous young redhead goes into the doctor’s office and said that her body hurt wherever she touched it. “Impossible!” says the doctor. “Show me”. “The redhead took her finger, pushed on her left wrist and screamed, then she pushed her elbow and screamed in even more. She pushed her knee and screamed; likewise she pushed her ankle and screamed. Everywhere she touched made her scream. The doctor said, “You’re not really a redhead, are you?” “Well, no” she said, “I’m actually a blonde.” “I thought so,” the doctor said. “Your finger is broken”.

THE INVISIBLE MAN Last December, on a dark Winter’s night, while driving home from work meeting a steady stream of lights coming against me, in a split second a person walking appeared in front of me, almost blacked out in dark clothes except for a face. I still shudder when I think about the incident and how near I came to a fatal tragedy. When I calmed a little I was going to drive on again when I suddenly thought I have to address this in some way. I thought about what I had in the my deliver van. I
got out and walked back to the man and gave him my high visibility bib. “Do you realise I almost killed you?” I said. “Wear this and spare your family and some other unfortunate driver a lot of grief”. Now this is a question I have for pedestrians at night or even low light on dark Winter evenings; Do you realise how invisible you are to drivers if not wearing the appropriate high viability clothing?
just one of 32 delivery drivers who work for Top Part Motor Factors, and collectively cover over 3 million km every year. Having shared my experience with work colleagues, we have agreed that all delivery van drivers in future will carry a modest supply of high visibility bibs. In the event of passing a pedestrian that is not clearly visible in low light or at night, we may stop, present them with a bib and warn them of the danger they are in.
I am a delivery van driver,

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: CONSUMER RIGHTS DURING SALES
PREMIUM ADVERTISING The More you tell the more you sell!!!
OUR TOP WINTER OFFERS!
Question What are my consumer rights when I buy something in the sales? Can I return sales items? Answer Your consumer rights during a sale are exactly the same as at any other time of the year. Your rights do not change just because you bought the item in a sale. Goods should be of merchantable quality, fit for their intended purpose and as described. If they are not, you are entitled to a repair, replacement or refund. If you are entitled to a refund because there is a fault with goods that you bought at full price, you should be refunded the amount you paid even if they are now on sale at a reduced price. Shop notices such as “No Refunds” or “No Exchanges” do not limit your rights, if you have a complaint about faulty items. Some shops display these notices, particularly during the sales, but this does not take away your rights under consumer protection law if the goods are faulty. However, you are not entitled to a refund because you change your mind about something you have bought in a shop, whether this is during the sales or at any other time of the year. Many shops do allow you to exchange goods that you have had second thoughts about, but this is at their discretion. It is a good idea to check the shop’s refund policy before buying anything. If you buy goods at full price but change your mind about them, and they are now on sale at a lower price, you may only be offered the reduced amount (if the shop is willing to offer a refund). You should always keep your receipts as proof of purchase and the price paid. This doesn’t necessarily have to be the shop receipt. You could show your credit or debit card statement (if you used one) or other documentation that proves it was purchased. For more information, visit the website of the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission at ccpc.ie.

TORQUING CARS! JAMES BOND’S NEW CAR’ REVEALED AS £121,000 ASTON MARTIN VANTAGE WITH TOP SPEED OF 195MPH
Aston Martin’s has revealed a new sports car fit for a secret agent - with a sleek design, a top speed of 195mph and a £121,000 price tag. While it may not come with the spy gadgets he’s used to, James Bond wouldn’t look out of place in the 2018 Vantage which can go from 0-60mph in just 3.5 seconds. he stunning coupe from the British firm was unveiled today with a new look and improved performance. It can hit its top speed thanks to a four-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine mated to rear-mounted ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. The new Vantage is the successor to the best-selling Aston Martin ever and is the latest to use the name since it was first introduced in 1951. Super-rich types will have to wait a few more months to get their hands on one, however. Deliveries are due to begin by mid-2018, the Warwickshirebased firm announced.
WHY ARE TOYOTA ONLY MAKING 400 YARIS GRMN HOT HATCHES? YOU’LL HAVE TO JUST WAIT AND SEE
First the bad news. Only one Irish person is getting an ultra-rare Toyota Yaris GRMN (Gazoo Racing Meister Nurburgring). Indeed only 400 models are being made. And the entire lot was sold between Europe and Japan while the car was still in preproduction. It is likely that the €42,000 (approximately) price tag here would have dented sales anyway. But why did a mass market behemoth, which sells millions of models globally, bother making such a limited thing at all? Toyota says it’s to mark the company’s return to World Rallying, but another answer might lie more in the future than in the present. The two years it took Toyota to develop a supremely lightweight hot hatch with a segment-leading power-to-weight ratio (0-100kmh in 6.2 secs) is the production line equivalent of performing heart surgery in a heartbeat. The first problem was shoehorning a 1.8-litre motor into an engine bay which more suitably houses a 1-litre 3cyl. Once it fitted, the next hurdles were making it quicker and cooling it. Problem solved with a fancy supercharger, which triples as a cooling unit and air intake. Clever. The performance exhaust had to be meandered around the bottom of the chassis like a boa constrictor. The whole car was stiffened to keep the Yaris’ regular skeleton from warping. For the sake of just 400 cars, the whole venture sounds like Toyota also made a rod for its own back.As far back as 1952, Kiichiro Toyoda (yes, with a ‘d’), Toyota’s founder, said car racing was “vital to the development of the Japanese passenger vehicle industry [....] enabling them to discover new ways of advancing automotive technology”. So, just because you can’t buy the Yaris GRMN does not mean you won’t soon benefit from its existence and the lessons learned from its whistle-stop production. To the one Irish person who has managed to secure one, if you are reading this, you won’t have to wait much longer for your own heart-racing experience. To the rest of us, we will just have to wait to see where Toyota’s re-investment in motorsport will take them. If the Yaris GRMN is anything to go by, the signs are promising.
OLDER DIESEL CARS LESS RELIABLE THAN PETROL CARS
Older diesel cars are three times more likely to breakdown than petrol models, a study shows. And there is an extra blow for motorists as diesel cars can cost 20% more to fix when something goes wrong. An analysis of 30,000 faults on cars three to eight years old found that the average engine repair bill for a diesel model is £517 compared with £433 for a petrol vehicle. The study - over 12 months - by car maintenance firm Motoreasy also found that engine faults are far more prevalent in diesel than petrol models with the biggest repair bill amounting to an eye-watering £4,030.The bad news comes as diesel drivers face a new blow with higher taxes for new models from April unless they meet stringent new emissions standards. Diesel cars are less reliable than petrol for more than seven in 10 manufacturers (71%) with Alfa Romeo experiencing faults four times more than often than petrol models. The most reliable diesel cars are made by Skoda with a failure rate of just 9%. The higher rate of diesel engine failures is mostly down to the fact that they are under more pressure than petrol counterparts.Diesel units rely on self-compression, meaning that fuel is compressed to a much greater extent, putting more pressure on internal engine parts.Duncan McClure Fisher, founder of MotorEasy, said: “Diesels experience many more small problems than petrol cars. They are less reliable and, when a big item goes wrong, it costs alot more to put right. If you’re still considering a used diesel car, our advice is to avoid high-mileage examples, particularly if you are only driving low mileage or doing city driving.” 28

The kids love the high quality Homework Journals which arrive from Lee Strand every September. So you can imagine how delighted they were when Caherleaheen won the draw. One particular boy in First Class, David Cullinan, was especially delighted because one night he and his granddad had helped his Mum count the tokens into bundles of 10.
Speaking at the presentation Mary Connolly, Principal stated “Caherleaheen is a gem of a school on the outskirts of Tralee with a wonderful school community. with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR HOT OFF THE HARDWOOD – THE PRES WIN THE ALL IRELAND: Huge congratulations to Presentation Secondary School Tralee who defeated Muckross Park Dublin in the Subway Schools Under 16 Girls All Ireland final. The game took place on Wednesday afternoon with a huge crowd in the Arena to cheer on the girls. Credit must also go to Basketball Ireland on their live streaming of all these finals as it give family members and supporters of the teams that were unable to travel the opportunity to watch the game. The Tralee girls were 12-8 down at the end of the first quarter but turned this around in the second hitting 14 points to their opponents 7 to lead 22-19. Heading into the 4th quarter the Tralee girls kept that three point lead 27-24. They opened this lead out to 5 points midway through the final quarter and they took a great win 33-28 to the huge delight of the coaches, squad, school and supporters. Mary O’Connell was outstanding amongst a great team performance with Rachel Kilgallon also deserving a mention. We will have a report on the Boys of the CBS The Green All Ireland u16 Boys A final against St Malachy’s Belfast next week. Here’s hoping the made it a double on Thursday. LOOKING BACK AND FORWARD: While we are only a few weeks into the New Year the sporting weekends are as busy as at any time of the year. This weekend the Inter County football season commences while the Kerry hurlers have their first League game. There is lots of action on the soccer front and also on the basketball boards, but unfortunately Garvey’s Tralee Tigers are not in Cup action, plus plenty of other sports. And we will look at some of the issues raised by GAA General Secretary Padraig Duffy as well. But before we look forward to those and other sports we look back on a great win for the St Brendan’s Park u14 team who are the first Kerry side into the Last 16 of the National Cup. Cup is the biggest club competition in the country and Kerry clubs are in the South West Region (Kerry, Clare and the Desmond League) and play 4 games to reach the Last 32 which is the open draw. The Park u14’s had a great run to the Last 32 but were handed a tough draw away to Villa in Waterford, one of the biggest clubs in the South East. But it didn’t faze these young players who came home following a 2-0 win to the delight of the big travelling support. They got off to a great start when following a number of corners by Colin Doody Josh Connolly volleyed home to put the Park 1-0 up. The Park defence and keeper Liam Carmody were equal to everything that their opposition threw at them and as with all Waterford sides they were never going to go down without a fight. The game was in the melting pot until half way through the second half when O’Connell and Cianan Cooney combined to set up Messiah Chirwa for the insurance goal. The Park were delighted to get the win and the management thanks all those who travelled and to Danny Diggins and Padraig McCannon who have worked diligently with the team over the past few months. The Park, who are the only Kerry club to reach a National Cup final when their 16’s fell at the final hurdle, now have a home draw in the Last 16 when they welcome the winners of KellsBlackwater or Macroom to Christy Leahy Park. The Park Squad on duty for this big win were: Liam Carmody, Samuel Aladesanusi, Seán O’Connell, Seán Hill, Kieran O’Connor, Conor Kerins, Colin Doody, Josh Connolly, Messiah Chirwa, Seán O’Connor, Cianan Cooney, Ben Hanafin, Luke O’Connell, Killian Murphy, David Feeley and Cian O’Neill. Kerry connection in Waterford: The Park felt at home warming up on the newly installed All-Weather at the Villa. The pitch was installed by Tralee’s PST. 17’S AND 15’S LEAGUE OF IRELAND BACK IN TRALEE: Staying with soccer and the trials for the 17’s and 15’s SSE Airtircity League of Ireland squads for the new season are well underway. The signing date for both squads is Friday 26th January 2018
January 31st and the management squads are working hard on getting the best players possible to play with Kerry. However there has been talk that a few players who would have made the 17’s squad have been signed by League of Ireland clubs. If this is the case then it’s a blow to our League of Ireland teams but on the flip side it’s a testament to the strength of the coaching in the League and clubs in Kerry that other League of Ireland clubs know the value of signing players from Kerry. The 17 team kick-off their season with an away trip to Cabinteely on the weekend of March 18th. This is followed by a home game against UCD the following weekend. The 15’s League of Ireland starts on March 25th. LOTS HAPPENING ON THE GAA FRONT: KERRY LADIES NEW BOARD TO BE ELECTED? By the time you are reading this hopefully a Kerry Ladies Football Board will be in place. The reconvened AGM was due to take place on Thursday night following a disappointing AGM where a number of the officers stepped down. With no nominations an EGM was called. Again despite a number of people being nominated none allowed their names to go forward and so they tried for a second time this week. However a lot of work has been done in the last week so hopefully a full officer board will be in place as the Kerry ladies deserve this. There has been talk that finances are an issue and of course over the last few seasons we have heard of the less than correct procedures and structures for the senior team when preparing for games and following matches and training sessions but this seems to have improved. Last season was another very decent season for the girls and hopefully all will be sorted before their tough season opener against Cork this Sunday. The time and venue for this was not announced at the time of going to print which again is not idea. They will also be at home the following Sunday when they welcome Mayo with Monaghan, Galway, Dublin, Donegal and Westmeath the other teams in Kerry’s Division.
HURLERS AWAY IN OPENER: Following on from the Munster League the serious hurling gets underway with an away trip to London for a 2pm game this Sunday. Any time a team travels to London it is a trip in the unknown as it is hard to know who strong the opposition will be on any given day. But the Kerry hurlers will be on a high from their defeat of Cork and very good second half against Limerick so if they can bring that form with them then they should get the victory. This will be important as they are in a tough division where all counties are capable of beating each other on any given day. The Kerry manager Fintan O’Connor is not happy about the new Championship setup saying that they were brought in without proper consultation. Kerry will face the bottom team in Munster if they top their group while the others would meet the bottom team in Leinster which is where Kerry played last year. And of course the bottom team in Munster will be much stronger than their Leinster counterpart. But then who said the vagaries of the GAA Championship is fair or equal to all. NEW ERA FOR THE KERRY FOOTBALLERS: Kerry fans travelling to Killarney for Sunday’s Allianz League opener against Donegal much of the discussion will be on the team that takes the field. With Eamonn Fitzmaurice now having a three year term the first games will be used for rebuilding and for trying new players in the League. The threat of Dublin and Mayo loom over the Championship plus the likes of the improving Tyrone and who knows where Cork are. So it will certainly make for an interesting League campaign. And everyone wishes new captain Fionn Fitzgerald all the best in his new role. The Mikey Sheehy comments are still being talked about. He certainly did not pull any punches regarding the number of Kerry fans who travelled to the replay against Mayo. He was right that the numbers were small but he must also acknowledge the cost and the fact that Mayo fans have been starved of success means none of them will want to miss what could be ‘their day’! PADRAIG DUFFY AND PAID MANAGERS: It was also interesting to see what Padraig Duffy has to say about clubs and counties paying managers in his final Secretaries Report. Like he says everyone knows it is going on but no one wants to speak about it. Interesting to see that no manager or ex manager and now pundit made any comments! Kerry has a serious core of fans that travel around the country to every game – challenge, League or championship. As for the rest ex-

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER players or management’s comments will not make them go. Colleges: On the colleges front The Green had a great win in the Corn Ui Mhuiri quarter finals easily defeating St Flannan’s of Ennis 4-15 to 1-7. They will meet Coliaste Cholim from Ballincolling in the semi-finals. Tralee CBS are out of the Frewen Cup after they lost out to Hamilton HS from Bandon. BIG WEEKEND ON THE HARDWOOD: This is the big week of the basketball season with the Cup final in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght. Unfortunately for Tralee fans Garvey’s Warriors are not in action. The big Tralee interest will be in the NICC Women’s Cup final but both Meadbh Barry and Laura Hoffman are playing for the Dublin side! The ex Tralee Imperials players will go up against St Mary’s from Castleisland in what should be a cracker. Duagh’s Aine McKenna is looking to create a piece of history and one that very difficult to do – a five in row!! Aine and her UCC Ambassador Glanmire teammates are unbeaten in the Cup since 2013 but this final against DCU Mercy is expected to be one of their toughest. All Tralee basketballs fans will be wishing Keane’s Supervalu Killorglin and St Mary’s Castlesland all the best in their respective Men’s and Women’s Cup finals. GARVEY’S WELL OVER THE TON IN BIG WIN: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors produced one of their best performances of the season when the defeated DCU Saints 110-74 away in Dublin. This makes it six wins in a row in the SuperLeague as they edge closer to at top 4 spot at a minimum. Trae Pemberton again proved why he is one of the top players in the country ending with a huge 41 points. Local players Darragh O’Hanlon and Pa McCarthy also impressed with 18 and 15 points. The game was close early on with Tralee leading 25-22 at the end of the first quarter and they were up by 7 at the break 49-42. The Kerry side led by 16 in the third before DCU cut the lead slightly with Dee Proby having a huge game, scoring 43 points. But the Warriors were always in control and coach Mark Bernsen must be happy with his sides 29 point haul in the fourth quarter and overall scoring spread. The Warriors have a huge home game on February 3rd when they welcome Pyrobel Killester to Tralee with an 8pm tip-off. ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: The club’s boys and girls u10 sides were delighted with their day at the KABB Blitz in Moyderwell last weekend. In the Lee Strand Boys Division 2 Plate the club won a very tight derby game defeating Tralee Tigers
30-27. The boys staged a great comeback as they were 10 points down at one stage. It was Evan Healy that got the vital winning basket. The u14 Division 2 side had a 42-33 win over Gneeveguilla. In other results in the u14 Division 3 Plate St Brendan’s beat Ballybunion Wildcats 24-19, in the Senior Mens Division 2 it finished Gneeveguilla 45- St Brendan’s 87 and in the Senior Mens Division 1 St Brendan’s defeated KCYMS 6649. In the Academy Gneeveguilla were the winners. Big Bout at the Boxing Club: The Tralee Boxing club will host their annual boxing tournament at their club facilities in Monavalley on Saturday February 4th. This tournament comes at a perfect time as fighters are preparing for the Kerry County Championships, which the club will be hosting the following week. This is the start of the busy season for boxers as following on from the County Championships the Munster Championships will take place in March in the Southside BC in Limerick with the All Ireland’s in the National Stadium later on in Dublin. MEDALS FOR HARRIERS: In the Irish Life Health National Indoor Combined Event Championships Tralee Harriers Jordan Kissane and Cillian Griffin both brought home medals. The schools cross country season got underway in Killarney with 17 schools taking part in the Kerry and West Limerick championships. The Morkham Shield for the Best Girls School went to Mercy Mounthawk while the Shield for the boys was won jointly by Tralee CBS and St Brendan’s Killarney. CUP WIN IN CORK FOR TRALEE RUGBY CLUB: The adage that in the Cup anything can happen rang through again at the weekend when Tralee Rugby made light of the trip to Cork to defeat Clonakilty 18-17 in the Munster Bank of Ireland Junior Cup. The Tralee boys are at the lower end of Division while their opponents are flying high in Dvision 2. Tralee were 17-11 down with ten minutes to go but Fearghail O’Nualain scored a try and Jack Quilter made no mistake with the conversion. Clon had a last minute penalty to win the game but it was missed to the delight of all from the Kingdom. There reward is a home tie this Sunday against Highfield at 2pm. ROWERS PULL TO NATIONAL INDOOR SUCCESS: Tralee Rowing Club junior member Nicolas Larkin won the Junior 15 (J15), 1000 meters race at the Irish Indoor Rowing Championship 2018 at the Sports Arena, University of Limerick, a competition that brought together around 1800 athletes last Saturday. He finished first among 47 competitors with a personal best time of 03:19.9. His national win comes only two months after

Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer.
