SIAMSA TÍRE PREPARES TO RE-OPEN ITS DOORS ... and create new jobs! Staff return to work at Siamsa Tíre this week with thanks to funding supports from the Arts Council Ireland and the Department of Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht. The team will be making adjustments to the building to ensure that the venue can safely welcome visitors next month under Fáilte Ireland’s COVID Safety Charter. An Autumn programme of events and exhibitions will be announced in the coming weeks. The company is also commencing a strategic review process to plan for its future in the wake of the pandemic. In order to complete all of this activity, Siamsa Tíre will be recruiting to fill a number of part-time positions. To inform the strategic review, Siamsa Tíre will be reaching out to all customers and stakeholders for their input in a series of surveys to develop a sustainable future for Siamsa Tíre and the creative communities that it promotes in Kerry. In order to meet the Friday 2nd October 2020

requirements for effective COVID measures and strategically developing the organisation, Siamsa Tíre will be recruiting the following part-time positions: Box Office and Events Assistant (x3), Gallery Exhibitions Coordinator, Creative Learning Assistant, Archive Assistant, Marketing Assistant and Cleaners. All details are on the website: siamsatire.com/ about/job-opportunities Róisín McGarr, Executive Director comments, “These are very difficult times for everyone and our sector has been particularly impacted by the public health restrictions that have been necessary to curb the spread of the virus. We are incredibly grateful to the Arts Council and the Department of Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht for all the work that they are doing for the sector and for their continued investment and their recognition of the value of Siamsa Tíre for the arts in Kerry and nationally. We have a lot of work to do by the end

of this year to adjust to the new reality, but we are thrilled to be able to return and plan for a re-opening.” Róisín continued, “We look forward to welcoming new staff to help develop a sustainable future for the organisation and the communities we work with. The past few months have driven home the deep need that we all share to gather together and let our souls catch up with us. The arts and culture give us the spaces to do that, even if only as a brief escape from the bad news

cycle. We’ll be working hard to ensure people can safely enjoy cultural events in the comfort that they have become accustomed to at Siamsa Tíre.” Staff will combine working in the office and working from home in line with COVID regulations and the Box Office and Gallery will reopen to the public once the COVID measures have been completed. Kerins O Rahillys pay tribute to their Club President and Lifelong member, Micheál Kerins (R.I.P.)

Micheál Kerins (1931 - 2020) It is with great sadness that we The Kerins O’Rahilly club inform you that our Club President Micheál Kerins passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening at his home in Cockleshell road,Tralee. Micheál was active in our club for over 70 years from his days as a minor in the late 40’s right up to the present time as President. He served the club as an outstanding player wearing the no. 5 jersey with great ability and pride through the glory years of the 1950’s. He played in five senior county finals winning three in 1953, ‘54 and ’57. Micheál played for Kerry during his career at minor, junior and senior levels. He was a member of the club senior executive for many years serving as Secretary, Treasurer and County Board delegate during that time. He was president of the Kerins O’Rahilly club since 2007. Micheál was a proud and active president contributing greatly at every club function and occasion. It is notable and ironic that the home of “The O’Rahilly” in Herbert Park Dublin was lost on the very same day that The Kerins O’Rahilly’s club lost its president Micheál Kerins. We wish to extend our sympathy to his son Haulie our chairman and all the Kerins family at this sad time. Ar Dheis De go Raibh a hAnam.

Fenit RNLI welcomes first female lifeboat Coxswain, Denise, in Ireland Denise Lynch, a volunteer lifeboat crewmember with Fenit RNLI in Kerry, has been passed out as an RNLI Coxswain. She is currently the only woman to hold the senior position on an operational lifeboat crew in Ireland and is the first woman to be appointed to the role in the country. Denise began as a volunteer in 2001 and has served on both Fenit RNLI’s inshore and all-weather lifeboats. On her appointment Denise said, ‘From the day I visited the station in primary school, I fell in love with lifeboats. I know my family and the lifeboat crew are proud of me and I feel incredibly honoured and ready for this new challenge. I have been a Helm on the inshore lifeboat and a navigator on the all-weather lifeboat for years. I think about how we are

helping families whose loved ones are in trouble and it hits home how important the work of the RNLI is, along with that of our colleagues in the Coast Guard and other search and rescues agencies.’ . There are currently 155 volunteer female lifeboat crew in Ireland. The charity is looking to recruit more volunteers for a variety of sea-going and station roles and Denise is keen to encourage others to follow in her footsteps. Asked what advice she would have for other women who might be interested in becoming lifeboat crew, Denise is clear in her answer, ‘I’d say go for it. It’s no big deal to my male colleagues on the lifeboat crew that a woman is in this role, because they know me and they’ve been to sea with me in all weathers. The

trust and respect are mutual between lifeboat crew. They know I can do the job and they know I’m there for them, whatever happens. If you’ve an interest, just give it a cut.’ ‘The RNLI will provide the training and they’ll know if and when you’re ready to move into a different role. I want to thank everyone at Fenit RNLI for supporting me and the RNLI for giving me the opportunity. It’s very special to the be first but I hope there are many more to come. Commenting on the appointment, Fenit RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager Ger O’Donnell said, ‘ We are delighted to have a new Coxswain at Fenit. Denise is a great addition to our Coxswain team and has been a valuable member of the lifeboat crew for many years.

We are lucky to have so many great volunteers at our station who fill a variety of roles, from fundraising to operations. We couldn’t function without them and they all play their part to save lives at sea.’ Anyone interested in volunteering for the RNLI, the charity that saves lives at sea, can find further details at www.rnli.org/volunteer

The Rose Hotel Walking Weekend The Rose Hotel’s annual walking weekend took place on Friday 25th & Saturday 26th September, year two of what is now a calendar event did not disappoint. Guests enjoyed a two night stay at the award winning Rose Hotel, which included dinner on one evening, breakfast each morning and a guided walk on Saturday with packed lunch and transport to & from the walk. The walk was led by John Edwards from Wild Water Adventures, where guests explored one of our exhilarating local walks around Loch A Duin Valley, meaning the “lake of the fort”, an archaeologist treasure trove, with wedge tombs, stone art, a fort, ancient stone walls and standing stone to name a few and of course a story or two from John! “We were absolutely thrilled with the feedback from this weekend, we had maximum numbers which was incredible, the weather was spectacular and the feedback has been brilliant from our guests” Aisling Foley, Sales & Marketing Manager

Beauty

HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS

I hope you’re all having an amazing week, the weather has really switched up to autumn hasn’t it! This week I wanted to talk about beauty products that I’ve recently been loving that aren’t makeup. So here we go…

Hairburst Healthy Hair Vitamins

I took these the last time I wanted to grow my hair and they worked a dream (pity I’ve bleached and chopped it since that). So I recently started taking them again. I got them in Holland & Barrett - you have to take them for at least 8 weeks to start seeing results.

Mark Hill Invisible taming polish

If you know me, one of my current go to hairstyles is a slick middle parting low bun. This stuff keeps all the baby hairs away without my hair looking too wet or shiny. I got it in Boots for €10.

Ole Henrikesen Banana Bright Primer

I know I said no makeup things today but technically this is actually a skin product. I sometimes wear it even when I’m not wearing makeup and it just makes my skin look and feel unreal. So hydrated and glowy. I ordered it on Boots.ie & got free next day delivery into store.

Soap & Glory Smoothie Star Body Buttercream

This product smells absolutely amazing, and it also leaves my skin feeling so so soft. You can get it in Boots.

FITNESS!

Hello my strong friends Hope you’re having a great week. This week I want to talk about focusing on YOURSELF. When it comes to being fit, working out and going to the gym everyone is doing something different, everyone has a different idea of what fitness means to them and what their goals are. What you should do is focus on YOU, what YOUR goals are and what YOU want. Don’t focus on anyone else’s food plan, workout plan or whatever. Just focus on what you know you should be doing for yourself. If you don’t know what that is… seek the help of a professional to see what you need to be doing. Be it a personal trainer, online coach, whatever. Just be sure they’re reputable and know what they’re doing. At the end of the day, the only person who has to live in your head, is you. So by focusing on what you want for yourself and your goals you will ensure that you’re always happy with your choices. Don’t feel pressured to do the latest diet craze or kill yourself running in the gym. I think it’s really important to workout because you want to and because it makes you feel good! I’m so happy to be in a consistent routine - I go to the gym 5 or 6 days a week because working out almost everyday is something that I do for myself. I’m lucky to be a member of The Tralee Arena, a gym that always has the best energy. Also, a great thing to do for yourself is to read. Reading develops the mind and gives you new things to think about. News concepts, new ideas, you are always learning when you read I like non fiction books, some of the books I have on my list at the moment are… Not A Diet Book - James Smith What I know for sure - Oprah Winfrey Atomic Habits - James Clear The Chimp Paradox - Prof Steve Peters

IT’S ONLY A JOKE JAKE DECIDED TO SEND HIS GOOD FRIEND, THOMAS, A BOUQUET OF FLOWERS TO CELEBRATE THOMAS'S BUSINESS EXPANSION

He called a florist in Thomas' local area and made arrangements- flowers, personalized note, vase, and so forth. A week later, Thomas called Jake, confused. "Jake- what the hell? The florist dropped off a bouquet of lilies with a message that says 'Rest in peace.'" Jake realizes the florist's mistake and calls them to complain. "We deeply apologize, sir, " the florist said. "But hey, it could be worse. Somewhere right now is a grave with colorful flowers and a message that says 'Congratulations on your new location!'"

The light goes off.” “Wow, that’s incredible,” the doctor says. A little later in the day, the doctor calls Larry’s wife. “Bonnie,” he says, “Larry is doing fine! But I had to call you because I’m in awe of his relationship with God. Is it true that he gets up during the night, and poof, the light goes on in the bathroom, and when he’s done, poof, the light goes off?” “Oh sweet Divine ”, exclaims Bonnie. “He’s peeing in the refrigerator again!”

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2020

Chef Noels secret tip... for Pork Chops!

For weeknight-friendly pork chops that cook in record time but are still succulent, we turn to an unexpected ingredient: sugar. A pinch sprinkled over the surface helps the chops caramelize and develop a golden-brown crust before the meat has a chance to dry out. For max juiciness, we finish cooking them in a buttery-tangy pan sauce that then gets spooned over every slice. Try it and you’ll look at the plain pork chop in a new light!

SWEET-AND-SAUCY PORK CHOPS

Serves 2

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • •

2 (1”-thick) bone-in pork rib chops (look for the most marbled ones you can find, preferably with some fat cap too) Sea salt 1 1/2 tsp. sugar, divided 2 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil, divided 1 large shallot, chopped 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 1/4 cup red wine vinegar 3 sprigs rosemary 1 Tbsp. drained capers 2 Tbsp. butter, cut into pieces

METHOD Season pork chops with salt and sprinkle evenly with 1/2 tsp. sugar. Heat 1 Tbsp. oil in a large pan over medium-high. Cook chops, undisturbed, until well browned underneath, about 3 minutes. Turn and cook just until second side is lightly browned, about 1 minute. Transfer chops to a plate (they won’t be fully cooked); reduce heat to medium. Pour remaining 1 Tbsp. oil into same pan and add shallot and garlic. Cook, stirring often, until softened and just beginning to brown, about 3 minutes. Add vinegar and remaining 1 tsp. sugar to pan. Cook, swirling pan occasionally, until vinegar is nearly evaporated, about 2 minutes. Add rosemary, capers, and 1/2 cup water to pan; season with salt. Reduce heat as needed to maintain a very low simmer. Add butter and swirl pan continuously (and vigorously) until sauce becomes smooth, glossy, and emulsified. Return pork chops to pan, arranging darker side up. Simmer gently in sauce, swirling occasionally, until chops are cooked through, about 3 minutes Transfer pork chops to plates and spoon sauce over.

End to End Entertainment as Stacks edge ahead to take the Town Board Cup! The Lee Strand sponsored Town Board Final was held in Austin Stack Park last Sunday. It was a great day for football. Weather conditions were perfect and Austin Stack Park left nothing wanting. Austin Stacks came out on top 2 – 15 to 3 – 09 after an enthralling game. Both teams had a couple of changes but that did not take from the spectacle. Both teams wanted bragging rights and went full tilt from the throw in. The game had everything to keep supporters on their feet. Two penalties were converted by Sheehy and Darragh O’Brien. There was one red card late in the game and 29 scores, most of them out of the top drawer. It was a ding dong affair for the hour with very little between the sides. 1 point (0 - 03 v 1 – 04 )separated them at the first water break. It was even steven at half time 1- 06 each. ....and one point between them at the second water break (1 - 11 v 2 – 07.) Stacks had the better last quarter scoring 1 – 04 to 1 - 02 to leave the final score Austin Stacks 2 - 15 to John Mitchel’s 3 – 09Alan O’Donoghue captain of John Mitchel’s got the Man of Match trophy, sponsored by the Aquadome, after giving a fabulous display of forward play.Teresa Higgins for Lee Strand presented the Roddy O’Donnell Trophy to Ronan Shannahan Austin Stack captain. photos by Adrienne Mc Loughlin

Here’s a lovely poem written by Louise Ward ...short but powerful and poignant!

LET’S LISTEN TOGETHER

Virus pandemic and quarantine all came out of the blue. People feeling terrified, not knowing what to do. The way we live is changing, we know this much is true. The media, scaremongering, all of this came with it too. Life made harder for some but not for others, single dads and single mothers falling out, court action taken all of us feel like were breaking. Beyond the point of repair, and God knows I am losing my hair. Making mistakes on what is best, feeling like it is the ultimate test. Doubting yourself and putting oneself down, terrified completely of going to town. Relationships are being tested, all this time off from work and feeling so unrested. What is right and what is wrong, how are we to know when it is always a different song. Lyrics are all so strange, trying to make it by adapting to change. Disagreements and nasty fights, we need the love to shine its bright lights. I/we are trying our best, maybe I/we will get it wrong, together I/we are trying hard to learn the words of this song.

ADVERTISER SPORT!

26 PREMIUM ADVERTISING

THE UP’S AND DOWN’S OF BASKETBALL: When the world get through this Covid pandemic I am sure some academics and students doing a Masters will do studies on the effect it had on different sports and also on the value of sport especially to our young people. While outdoor sports don’t seem to be affected to much bar the lack of fans but soccer, GAA, golf, horse racing, cycling, Pitch & Putt, tennis etc all continued at both local and elite level. There were some exceptions where competitions were cancelled as players from counties that when into Phase 3 were not able to travel for some sports. However other sports were able to continue due to their elite classification. For example the underage League of Ireland’s all came under the elite banner so there was no restriction on travel. One of the most interesting sports to look at is basketball. From a Super and National League level it is all systems go as it is for the main men’s and Ladies Cups. However all the rest of the Cup competitions have been postponed but the draws – which are on Basketball Ireland’s website – still stand. Staying at the top level and Garvey’s Tralee Warriors have put last year’s controversial end to the SuperLeague behind them and getting set for the new season. There will be changes on the bench and one the court with John Dowling now in the hot seat with Gareth Moore as his assistant. Dowling certainly deserves his chance to be the Head Coach as he was assistant to both Mark Bernsen and Pat Price over the last few seasons. But Dowling’s skill set is much wider than that as can be seen by his involvement with Mercy Mounthawk, the basketball A School of the Year last year. So from a Kerry and Tralee point of view it is great to see a local man reaching this coaching pinnacle. On the court the Warriors are welcoming back Cain O’Sullivan who has been in the US and will announce three more signings in the coming days once they have fulfilled their Covid protocols. However Darren O’Sullivan, Paul Dick, Darragh O’Hanlon and Pa McCarthy will not be on this year’s roster. These players all contributed to the great success of the Warriors over the last few seasons and their contributions will be remembered by the fans. It will be a big year for Kerry on the National League front as along with the Garvey’s Tralee Warriors Keanes Supervalu Killorglin will again be in the SuperLeague, Scotts Lakers St Paul’s will be joined in Division 1 by newcomers Killarney Cougars which will make for interesting times in the town while there will also be two teams in the Ladies Divisions. Team Garvey’s St Mary’s Castleisland will play in the Women’s SuperLeague while St Paul’s Killarney have entered a team in Division 1. LOCAL BASKETBALL PROSPECTS NOT AS BRIGHT: The Kerry Airport Kerry Area Basketball Board and the clubs have postponed the start of the new season. With more meetings to come they are looking at November Friday 2nd October 2020

at the earliest. One of the biggest challenges will be the fact the some clubs have their venues for training and games sorted while others, particularly those who were depending on schools, don’t have permission at the moment to begin training. These are testing times for schools with some using their halls as classrooms etc. But hopefully things will stabilise in the coming weeks and these clubs will be allowed provide basketball for all those who want to play it. The frustrating thing is that the sport was never as popular as it was before the Covid interruption.

County League in a tight encounter and also played Cillard as thoughts now turn to the final League table after all teams have played their games to see who qualifies for the semi-finals. The u8’s made an enjoyable trip to Causeway while the u10’s hosted Ballyduff, In the hurling section the u10’s had a 1 point win over Ballyduff while the u12’s defeated St Brendan’s 4-04 to 1-10 in a challenge game. The club is exploring the running of a Street League for the ‘older’ hurling and camogie players with games on the astroturf for the next four Friday’s.

BOBCATS BACK: Staying with local basketball and one club that is all-ready to go is TK Bobcats. The Ballymacelligott club is currently taking registrations for its academy, Juvenile and Senior Ladies sections with a view to returning to training in the next week. Training, in John Mitchels, will be conducted in a safe manner and in accordance with Basketball Ireland Covid regulations. Registration forms and further information is available from the club or on the Ballymacelligott Bobcats Basketball Facebook page. Should any other club in the Tralee area have details of its return to training plans we will be delighted to give them a mention.

ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 15,18,21 and 23 and the next jackpot will be e2500 for the draw this Sunday in the clubhouse. The underage teams had another great session last Sunday and the club is very thankful to all the coaches for the work they are doing with the youngest members of the club. The u8’s also welcomed Na Gaeil. The u11’s were away to Na Gaeil while the u12’s have 2 more games before the end of the season on October 11th. The u14’s played a high scoring challenge against going down 5-06 to 5-09 to Stacks B. The club will enter two teams in the u13/15’s competition where they will be in Group 2 with Stacks, Ballymac and Churchill. The seniors lost out to Na Gaeil in the semi-finals of the Lee Strand St Brendan’s Board Senior Football Championship.

STACKS ADD ANOTHER TROPHY TO THE CABINET: Austin Stacks are the 2020 Tralee Board Senior Football champions and the Roddy O’Donnell Cup is in their trophy cabinet following a 2-15 to 3-09 win over John Mitchels. The Cup was presented by Teresa Walker of sponsors of Lee Strand to captain Ronan Shanahan with the Man of the Match presented to Mitchels player Alan O’Donoghue. There was nothing between the sides for most of the game with a late Darragh O’Brien penalty added to by points from Sean Quilter and Dylan Casey gave the Stacks the hard fought win. The Stacks will be delighted to add this title and the local bragging rights to their Kerry Senior Club Championship win. PARNELL’S NEWS: The Parnell’s club is celebrating another trophy with the u14 Camogie team crowned the County B Champions having defeated Sliabh Luachra in Spa last weekend. The girls showed their intent from the start with Lana O’Connell hitting two goals which were added to by two from Sadbh Cadogan and one from Shauna Harris before the break. Also getting on the score sheet were Kate O’Louglin, Abbie Canty, Faye Diggin, Rachel Sargent and Jessica McGibney while setting up the scorers were Mary-Angela Lynch, Maeve Trant, Orla Costello, Grainne Diggin, Caoilainn Culloo and Rachel Falvey. Overall it was a totally dominant display by all the girls that were on duty and they deserved their celebrations when joint captains Jessica O’Loughlin and Shauna Harris accepted the Shield. The u16’s defeated Slabh Luachra in the

BALLYMAC NEWS: The Junior team have one League game left versus Annascaul but the date has not been fixed for this game yet. The Academy is going from strength to strength and the u8’s had a great day out at Dr Crokes while the u10’s welcomed the same opposition. The u16’s were a little depleted when going down to Austin Stacks. The Ladies had a great start to their North Kerry Senior Championship when they travelled to Dingle. Two goals from Roisin Rahilly helped the Ladies lead 2-05 to 0-08 at the break. They took over in the second half and restricted the Dingle side to three more points as the Ballymac Ladies ran out easy winners. The u14’s lost out to Stacks in the Shield Final in a game where they lost two strong players to injury and coupled with two who were unable to start meant they couldn’t match the Tralee girls. Despite the loss the girls had a great season ending in the Top 4 of the County League. The club thanks all the players, coaches and parents for their commitment during the season. There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 12,6,25 and 4 with the next jackpot being e860. TRALEE BADMINTON CLUB READY TO GO: Badminton is a popular sport around the county but Tralee had no club but that has changed. Last Sunday the Tralee Badminton Club held its registration at the Sports Complex. The club plans to

run coaching sessions for the ages of 8 to 17 years of age. The club has two vastly experienced coaches Michelle Corr and Jill Redmond who have been involved with Kerry juvenile sides which have enjoyed some great success. The Tralee Badminton Club will train on Tuesday and Thursday nights with the u11’s and u13’s from 6 to 7pm and the u15’s and u17’s from 7 to 8pm with a cost of e35 per month for both sessions each week. This includes membership of Badminton Ireland, Kerry County Badminton and insurance. WINTER SERIES BEGINS THIS SUNDAY: One of the notes I always look out for is the Tralee Bay Swimming Clubs Winter Swim series. That is because it is usually the first time I mention Christmas!! Yes – that Most Wonderful Time of the Year (and apologies if you don’t share my love of all things Christmassy!!). The Winter Swimming Turkey Series begins this Sunday October 4th at 11amand will continue every Sunday up to Christmas when the raffle for Turkeys, Hams, Wines and Chocolates takes place. Swimmers get a ticket for a small donation each week they take part. Also the last of the Cold Water Winter Swimming courses takes place this Saturday at 10am but booking is essential through the club’s Facebook page if not already full. AT THE TRACK: There are racing on each of the nights this weekend. On Friday night the first of the 10 races starts at 7.42pm. The following night the semi-finals of the Track Supporters Club A3 Stake with a winner’s prize of e3,500 are the highlight of the card. On Sunday evening the racing commences at 6.38pm with an 8 race programme. RACE WINS FOR CREAN: In Kerry Motorsport News Tralee’s Darragh Crean had a great weekend in Mondello Park as he took two wins and a second place on his Suzuki in the Production Twin class. He carried the great form he showed at Kirkistown where he took 3rd and 4th into last weekend’s races. He is the provisional leader of the series ahead of another meeting at the Kildare venue later this month. Tralee’s Rob O’Connell took two seconds and a third in his races at Mondello while Emmet O’Grady was not happy with his two fifth and two seventh places. Further afield the Kerry Motor Sports News reports that Lorcan Hanafin, who has many Tralee connections had a great weekend in the Porsche Carerra Cup GB in Thruxton in Hampshire. He took a second and a third place in his races. STREET LEAGUES IN THE OMNIPLEX; While not specifically a Tralee sporting story if you are looking for something to watch in the cinema the Omniplex is showing Street Leagues which features the Irish homeless teams who took part in the Homeless World Cup in Oslo.
