LITTLE PIECE OF NEW YORK ON EDWARD STREET ?.... THATS THE UGLY MUG! 6

After being open only 3 weeks, an elderly lady had described how she had been temporarily transported back to a coffee shop on fifth avenue New York which she frequented while working in the US in the sixties. This was brought about by the vibrant colours and retro feel that has been created in the Ugly Mug. David Leonard opened the Ugly Mug on Edward street

in August this year. Proudly serving Badger and Dodo coffee, it is fast gaining a reputation as the best cup in town. Inspired by his time spent in New Zealand, where cafe culture is huge, David wanted to bring something fresh and different to Tralee. This can be seen in the colourful decor and cosy ambience of the cafe. The Ugly Mug serves an array of locally, homemade treats as well as an impressive lunch menu - sandwiches, bagels, soup and salad. This street Cafe has something for everyone with outstanding coffee and delicious food, including gluten free and low calorie options. Check out their cool video on Facebook !

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... A HAVEN OF LIGHT… RECOVERY Haven Kerry is extending a warm invitation to their clients, volunteers and the general public to join them for the official switching on of their ‘Haven of Light’ Christmas Tree this Friday night, December 8, at 7.30pm. The symbolic event will take place at the charity’s cancer support house at 5 Haig’s Terrace, Tralee and will offer people the opportunity to sponsor a light in honour of loved ones who are currently on their cancer journey or those have sadly lost their fight. Nine-year-old Anna Chute from The Spa has been given the honour of switching on the lights following her heart-warming donation of handmade bookmarks to the charity a few weeks ago,

while renowned entertainer Mark Leen will add even more festive spirit to the occasion as he performs a selection of Christmas carols. Recovery Haven manager, Siobhan McSweeney, explained that the theme of the occasion is that of hope – not only for those who are currently dealing with cancer, but also those trying to cope with the loss of a loved one. “Christmas time is full of glitter, wrapping and carols but can also highlight the challenges and difficulties people may be dealing with for whatever reason. Recovery Haven is there to support those individuals and their families dealing with cancer and every day we witness people’s resilience and strength,” she said.

“Our tree - our Haven of Light - is all about hope and we are delighted that this tree will be a symbol of hope in our community for whatever people are coping with.” Siobhan also paid tribute to the members of the Ballymacelligott Community Employment Scheme and Kerry County Council who worked together to source, deliver and erect the impressive tree at Haig’s Terrace. Those visiting the house on Friday night are invited to sponsor a light in honour of

their loved ones, but those unable to attend can also support the initiative by dropping into the house between here and Christmas or by donating online at www. recoveryhavenkerry.com

A SEASON OF SUNDAYS’ HAS SOME GREAT KERRY SHOTS! Over the past twenty-one years, Sportsfile’s ‘A Season of Sundays’ has become an eagerly awaited GAA tradition, marking the end of each season with a stunning collection of images. The book is available online now and in book stores nationwide Now in its twenty-first year of publication, A Season of Sundays 2017 embraces the very heart and soul of Ireland’s national games as captured by the award-winning team of photographers at Sportsfile. This year’s instalment captures some fantastic moments from Kerry as well charting the highs and lows of the GAA season in another bright and absorbing look back at the year. In 2017, we were treated to some thrilling football matches across both the leagues and the championship which culminated in an All-Ireland final for the ages that saw Dublin defeat Mayo to retain the Sam Maguire for a third straight season. In the hurling, there was no stopping Joe Canning and Galway as they ended their 29-year wait and got their hands on the Liam MacCarthy trophy after a thrilling final against Derek McGrath’s Waterford. The Tribesmen 14

TRALEE ADVERTISER

took their fine league form which saw them dismantle a good Tipp side in April into the championship and they’ll be the team to beat again in 2018. Sportsfile captured Sarah McCaffrey’s two goals off the bench as Dublin’s ladies followed their male counterparts by defeating Mayo in what looks to be the final game of a fine career for the green and red’s star forward, Cora Staunton, who recently agreed a move to Australian Rules’ Western Sydney Giants. While in the Camogie, Cork got revenge on Kilkenny as they won their 27th O’ Duffy Cup in a dramatic repeat of last year’s final. Speaking at the launch, the book’s creator Ray McManus said: “A Season of Sundays is Sportsfile’s brainchild since 1996, and to see it mark its 21st birthday is special for the whole team to celebrate. Since its inception, the book has captured some truly fantastic moments in each of those seasons and 2017 was no different. I would like to thank all of my dedicated photographers for their fantastic work throughout the year, and of course the GAA community for making it such Friday 8th December 2017

a thrilling season – one we won’t forget here at Sportsfile.” With text by Alan Milton, it is a treasured record of the 2017 GAA season to be savoured and enjoyed by players, spectators and enthusiasts everywhere. It would make the perfect Christmas gift for any GAA fan, retailing at €24.95 from bookstores nationwide and online at www.sportsfile. com.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... WALK THE LINE ...AND THEN CYCLE IT !!

Friends of the Tralee to Fenit Greenway were invited to join a public cycle (or walk) on the urban section of the Tralee-Fenit Greenway on Sunday afternoon. The event was well advertised on local media last week, and a large number of walkers and cyclists of all ages, congregated at the Church of Our Lady and St. Brendan in Upper Rock Street, taking in a diversion over the Casement Avenue bridge, and continuing the official walk along the public pathway (Skinny Mile) to Mounthawk, where refreshments were provided by Mike O’Neill and his organising team. This is a valuable amenity for visitors and locals alike that can be extended along the old railway line after Mounthawk to Fenit and beyond once the hurdle of planning permission and funding is actively followed up by the public and our political representatives in Kerry County Council. Check it out, it’s a nice safe family friendly walk, cycle or jog...and it’s free! Photos Adrienne McLoughlin, Tralee 086 0791421

COME CELEBRATE CHRISTY’S LEGACY THIS SATURDAY IN ABBEYCOURT This weekend will see the 10th Anniversary of the passing of one of Tralee’s most beloved sons, Edward Christopher Ross aka Christie Hennessy. And the town will not let the occasion pass without marking it. Sat from 2pm to 6pm there will be music at Christie Hennessy place by the statue, Christie’s songs will fill the air for the evening. There promises to be guest appearances and Singer/ Songwriter Mark Leen will be MC. Mark has recently had one of his songs “The Old East End Tonight” featured twice in a major British full length film. “We cannot let the anniversary pass without some events to remember Christie” said Mark. “Radio Kerry’s Francis Jones and I will discuss Christie’s 16

TRALEE ADVERTISER

legacy and impact as an artist on Monday the 11th during the 11 to 1 club and later that night we are inviting people to The Greyhound Bar as we reminisce with some of Christie’s friends by the plaque which recognises Christie Hennessy’s musical accomplishments.” Mark added that the RTE concert orchestra are now releasing a 2nd Joe Dolan tribute album for Joe’s 10th Anniversary, and although nothing of the sort is in the pipeline for Christie, the thing that sets Christie apart from other artists is the fact that he wrote all of his own songs. He is surely deserving of such an honor said Mark. Christie Hennessy sang the line - Remember Me, and indeed he will not be forgotten Friday 8th December 2017

this weekend in his native Tralee. Call Chris or Colette Tel: 066-7126399 or e-mail : traleeadvertiser@gmail.com

The first night which was held at Mountain Lodge was titled “JANUS MUNSTER DJ CHAMPIONSHIP”, where they got two DJs each from Limerick, Cork and Kerry. “Back then things were strict with regards to putting on gigs of this nature, we couldn’t just hold an ‘out and out rave’ (so to speak) so we came up with this idea that would give the night some credence and some respectability. The second night they put on was held at the Earl of Desmond Hotel with DJs Buddy, Stacky, Jonno Brien and again it was a complete success. With the third night they went back to Mountain Lodge JANUS 2.0 returns for its 20th Anniversary on the 26th December tickets 10 euro sold at b-mobile tralee ...get yours now !!!!

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! A HEAVILY INEBRIATED MAN IS OUT WITH HIS WIFE. Finally they call it a day and make their way home. Driving on a major road, the car swerves dangerously, frequently crossing lanes at a frightening speed and narrowly avoiding causing countless collisions. Eventually they are pulled over by the cops. With the window lowered, the man attempts to justify his actions. “Goodd evvening... offficer...” he slurs. “As you can see, I’ve had rather a lot to drink.” The cop is fuming. “Sir. That is not a valid excuse to allow your wife to drive.”

THOMAS IS 32 YEARS OLD AND HE IS STILL SINGLE.

One day a friend asked, “Why aren’t you married? Can’t you find a woman who will be a good wife?” Thomas replied, “Actually, I’ve found many women I wanted to marry, but when I bring them home to meet my parents, my mother doesn’t like them.” His friend thinks for a moment and says, “I’ve got the perfect solution, just find a girl who’s just like your mother.” A few months later they meet again and his friend says, “Did you find the perfect girl? Did your mother like her?” With a frown on his face, Thomas answers, “Yes, I found the perfect girl. She was just like my mother. You were right, my mother liked her very much.” The friend said, “Then what’s the problem?” Thomas replied, “My father doesn’t like her.”

A LADY COMES HOME FROM HER DOCTOR’S APPOINTMENT GRINNING FROM EAR TO EAR.

Her husband asks, “Why are you so happy?” The wife says, “The doctor told me that for a forty-five year old woman, I have the breasts of a eighteen year old.” “Oh yeah?” quipped her husband, “What did he say about your forty-five year old ass?” She said, “Your name never came up in the conversation.”

BLONDE NUN

One night a blonde nun was praying in her room when God appeared before her. “My daughter, you have pleased me greatly. Your heart is full of love for your fellow creatures and your actions and prayers are always for the benefit of others. I have come to you,

not only to thank and commend you,but to grant you anything you wish,” said God. “Dear Heavenly Father, I am perfectly happy. I am a bride of Christ. I am doing what I love. I lack for nothing material since the Church supports me. I am content in all ways,” said the nun. “There must be something you would have of me,” said God. “Well, there is one thing,” she said. “Just name it,” said God. “It’s those blonde jokes. They are so demeaning to blondes everywhere, not just to me. I would like for blonde jokes to stop.” “Consider it done,” said God. “Blonde jokes shall be stricken from the minds of humans everywhere. But surely there is something that I could do just for you.” “There is one thing. But it’s really small, and not worth your time,” said the nun. “Name it. Please,” said God. “It’s the M&M’s,” said the nun. “They’re so hard to peel.”

A BOY IS SELLING FISH ON A CORNER..

To get his customers’ attention, he is yelling, “Dam fish for sale! Get your dam fish here!” A pastor hears this and asks, “Why are you calling them ‘dam fish.’” The boy responds, “Because I caught these fish at the local dam.” The pastor buys a couple fish, takes them home to his wife, and asks her to cook the dam fish. The wife responds surprised, “I didn’t know it was acceptable for a preacher to speak that way.” He explains to her why they are dam fish. Later at the dinner table, he asks his son to pass the dam fish. He responds, “That’s the spirit, Dad! Now pass the f**king potatoes!

ONE DAY TWO BROTHERS WERE RAKING IN THE FRONT YARD...

The older brother, who is 6, says, “Hey, at breakfast tomorrow, me and you should say a cuss word!” The younger brother, who is 4, nods with excitement. So, the next day, the their mother says, “What do you want for breakfast?” to the older brother. He replies, “All hell! I’ll have some Cherrios!” The mother grabs him by the ear and spanks him all the way up the stairs into his room. “Now, what do you want for breakfast?” The mother says to the younger brother. “I don’t know, but you can bet your fat ass it ain’t going to be Cherrios!”

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: RENT-A-ROOM RELIEF

TECHNOLOGY CORNER with Billy O Meara (HRI Services)

Billy simplifies and explains Todays Technology How can I restrict my kids online?

There is a new product called iKydz which you connect to your router, you can download an app on your phone in which you can use to control the device. For example, at mealtimes, you can push a button that kills the internet access for all devices, and at other times you can restrict usage – a games console that can only access the internet for two hours on a weekend, or removing a laptop’s wi-fi access after 10pm. Perfect for parents, a nightmare for kids. The best thing about this device is it’s easy to setup and there is an online tutorial available on their website if you run into difficulty. Just make sure you delete all your devices from your existing network. iKydz can be purchase from Hugh Cullotys.

How can I stop spam emails?

Unfortunately, you can’t stop spam, once a company gets your email then they have you, so what can you do? Well, blocking the email address will not work because spammers change their email address every day and they can also make you think it’s coming from a friend. I use a Gmail account and Office 365 account which seems to be very good in filtering spam emails, it’s not perfect but it helps. Should the spam become unbearable then the only choice you have is to create a new email address and don’t put it on websites you don’t know, use a temporary email address from https://www.mailinator.com/ Don’t enable pictures on spam, The reason that pictures are disabled by default on most spam filtered email is that the mere act of enabling an image from a spam email so that it can be displayed will alert the spammer that they have a real email address.

Question I have retired from work and am planning to rent my spare room to a student lodger to supplement my pension. Will I have to pay tax on the rental income? Answer If you rent out part of your home as residential accommodation, the income you earn is exempt from tax, provided the total paid by the tenant(s) is not more than €14,000 in a tax year and you satisfy the qualifying conditions. This is called rent-a-room relief. It applies to accommodation in your home – which can include a self-contained unit such as a basement flat or a converted garage. It does not apply to rooms that are not attached to your home and it does not apply to rent paid by your child. You must live in your home as your sole or main residence during the tax year for which you are claiming the relief and the room(s) must be used as residential accommodation. For example, you can claim the relief if you are renting a room to a student for the academic year, but not if you are taking in short-term guests. If you rent a room in your home, residential tenancies legislation does not apply. So, if you are only renting out a room, you do not have to register as a landlord with the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB), provide a rent book to the tenant or ensure that the accommodation meets any minimum physical standards. However, if you rent out a self-contained unit such as a basement flat, the legislation does apply. The gross income you get cannot be more than €14,000 in a tax year. This includes sums that the tenant pays to you for food, utilities, laundry or similar goods and services. Expenses that you incur are not deducted from gross income. If your income from rent and other services is over the limit, the entire income (not just the amount over the limit) is taxable. If you qualify for rent-a-room relief, the income is not liable to Pay Related Social Insurance (PRSI), the Universal Social Charge or income tax. Claiming rent-a-room relief does not affect your mortgage interest relief or your exemption from Capital Gains Tax if you sell your home. If you are selfassessed for tax, you can enter the exempt income on the Revenue Online Service (ROS). If you are a Pay As You Earn (PAYE) taxpayer you can use the myAccount online service.

SUFFER FROM BREATHING PROBLEMS AND AILMENTS THIS WINTER? A VISIT TO THE SALT THERAPY ROOMS IN TRALEE MIGHT JUST DO THE TRICK! Chris Shortt from The Tralee Advertiser caught up with breathing expert, Stas, who operates Halotherapy , Salt Rooms in Tralee at his stand at the recent Bank Of Ireland National Tralee Enterprise Week. Stas was delighted to tell me the good news stories that keep coming back to him from the different people (now proud to call his friends!) who have experienced his Salt Therapy at his premises in Market Lane, Tralee . The stories of recovery, of relief and of improvement in so many peoples lives were so good... and dramatic in some cases , that I had to share them in The Tralee Advertiser“ says Chris “These are people who suffer from all types of breathing Issues that complicate their lives... issues such as Asthma , Hay Fever, Chronic coughing ,wheezing , bronchitis , Nasal congestion , Chronic Sinus... the list goes on“ This is a good news story, it's my job to pass it on, especially this time of year…. says Chris... keep reading

BAD CHILD COUGH

We started using the Salt Rooms for my daughters throat and cough. After our second session I noticed a difference in her cough. We are on our 6th session and so pleased with the results. Her cough is gone and her throat feels so much better. Would recommend these Salt Rooms to anyone looking for alternative medicine. N. Ardfert

CHILD ASTHMA & EAR INFECTIONS

I am delighted with the benefits my three kids got from salt therapy, My three year old who has asthma started to get a cough recently but the sessions of salt therapy nipped it in the bud (no other intervention required! I've seen a big improvement in my nine month old who has always been chesty and prone to ear infections. All three of them are sleeping so well since we began our sessions! Aileen P.

LUNG, ASTHMA & BREATHING PROBLEMS

I got a very bad infection in my lungs from a chest cold. I had to go to Hospital to get IV, from Monday to Friday. I went to the Salt Room the day I came out of the Hospital. The phlegm that was in my airways just came up so easy. Before this I had been doing exercise to get this up and loosen the phlegm. I would highly recommend Salt Room treatment to anyone who suffers from lung, asthma, or breathing problems. With exercise along, to bring up the phlegm is very hard. With Salt Room therapy it is just floats up with no effort. Patricia. Castleisland.

IT HAS CHANGED MY LIFE !!.

Long Term Sufferer of Sarcoidosis and Bad Asthma I was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis 22 yrs ago, 12 yrs ago I was diagnosed with Asthma. Both of these lung conditions have had a severe impact on my life.Gradually over the past three years, my quality of life have been greatly compromised. I have had several Asthma attacks, hospitalised several times and my medication was having less of an impact for me. I had heard of " Salt Therapy" but did nothing about it until I saw a friend on Facebook recommending "Halotherapy". I rang Stass, made an appointment and I attended "Salt Room" two days a week. This have changed my life! I didn’t know what a sound nights sleep was until now! I now wake up refreshed. I loved walking but found it extremely hard and needed pain killers. When I did walk now, I walk between three and six miles a day and feel well able to do more! "Halotherapy" have given me a new lease of life! I would highly recommend "Salt Room" to anyone experiencing Lung, Bronchial or Sinus problems. Forty five minutes of relaxation in the "Halotherapy Room" is brilliant and the results are overwhelming! I want to thank Stass sincerely for introducing "Salt Room" to Tralee and Co. Kerry.Best wishes and million Thanks, Pat O Leary, Castleisland.

Bexblah Beauty This page is sponsored by Munster Robes & Kitchens

HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING A GREAT WEEK! I hope you all enjoyed my Makeup Gift Guide last week. This week, as promised I’m doing my Skincare Gift Guide. Buying skincare for someone is a great gift but you have to be careful as everyone has different skincare needs and types. So I’m here this week to help you pick some skincare that hopefully will suit anyone. SERUMS: Serum’s are a great gift to get someone for Christmas as everyone can use Serums, dry skin, oily skin, older skin, younger skin serums are the best! The three serums I have used and love are… Clarins Doluble Serum Another great one, more for a slightly more mature skin. It’s definitely an antiaging serum. It can be used for younger skin also and is perfect for even the most sensitive skin. Available from Cindy in Ch or Debenhams in Manor for 72.

Farsali Unicorn Essence Serum A perfect serum for someone in their teens/twenties or someone who loves makeup! I’m obsessed with this serum (I got it for Christmas) and it smells amazing! Available on Farsali. com or Cultbeauty. co.uk for 55 euro.

Lancome Genifique Serum One of my most used serums and great for any age or skin type. This serum only needs to be used in the morning and works on the skin for 24 hours. It also comes in great value gift sets at this time of the year. Available from Helen in CH or Sam Mac Cauleys for 73 euro.

EYE CREAM: I feel like eye creams are a great gift to buy as I find people are slow to splurge on them for themselves. I feel like eye creams are often overlooked but they’re very important - for all ages! Benefit It’s Potent! Eye Cream Got dark circles or fine lines? This cream is for you!(or the person you’re buying it for, but treat yourself… I won’t judge) I love this cream. Not many people realise Benefit do skincare, but they do… and it’s great! This one is 36 euro but Benefit have 3 for 2 on at the moment so you could get the Hoola Bronzer that I talked about last week, the eye cream, and then a free gift for yourself! Who doesn’t love free gifts?!

Kiehl’s Creamy Avocado Eye Treatment This is amazing to moisturise the eye area. It makes the eye are so soft and hydrated! It’s also used and love by Kylie Jenner soooo I mean can you go wrong? Very well priced at 26 euro.

Lancome Genifique Eye Pearl Advanced More of an eye serum than a cream but still… this stuff is amazing, especially if you suffer with puffiness around the eyes. The applicator for this alone is enough reason to get this, it feels amazing. This is a bit more high end at 55 euro.

Also, tickets for my Beautiful Favourites event on Saturday January 6th (Women’s Christmas) are now on sale in Benners Hotel Tralee! Over half of our tickets have sold. There will be full makeup and skincare demos, q&a’s, spotprizes, guest speakers and sooooo much more! I look forward to seeing some of you there! The event is being sponsored by Blank Canvas Cosmetics which I’m SO excited about! I hope you all have an amazing week!

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2017

Eat less from a box and more from the earth! Veggies are pretty much overlooked, an after thought But they can every bit as tasty as the meat or fish you cook , and why shouldn’t they be! With a little thought, fresh as possible of course, they really can make the dish! This is why we grow most of our own at Croí restaurant... Don’t forget your local veg shop has probably the freshest vegetables (and fruit ) around!

ROASTED-VEGETABLE CLAFOUTIS INGREDIENTS BATTER • 1 3/4 cups cream or milk • 4 large eggs • 1/2 cup plain flour • 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, plus more for sprinkling • Sea salt • Softened butter, for greasing

• • • • • • • • •

8 medium carrots of varying colors (3/4 pound) 6 baby beets of varying colors (about 4 ounces), scrubbed 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for rubbing 6 fingerling potatoes 2 small purple sweet potatoes (3/4 pound total) 1 head cauliflower (about 4 ounces), cut into 3/4-inch florets 1/2 small head Romanesco broccoli, cut into 3/4-inch florets (3 cups) Sea salt Freshly ground pepper

METHOD Step 1 roast the vegetables - Preheat the oven to 160c. Spread the carrots and beets on 2 separate sheets of foil and drizzle with 2 tablespoons of the olive oil. Fold up the edges of the foil sheets to make two sealed packets. On a small baking sheet, rub the fingerling and sweet potatoes with olive oil and prick them all over with a fork. In a medium baking dish, toss the cauliflower and broccoli florets with the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Roast the broccoli and cauliflower for about 15 minutes, the potatoes for about 30 minutes and the carrots and beets for about 35 minutes, until all of the vegetables are tender and the broccoli and cauliflower are browned in spots. Let cool slightly. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into quarters lengthwise; peel the fingerling potatoes and cut them in half lengthwise. Season the roasted vegetables lightly with salt and pepper. Step 2 make the batter - In a blender, combine the milk with the eggs, flour, 1/2 cup of the cheese and 2 teaspoons salt and blend until smooth. Butter a 9-inch-square glass or ceramic baking dish and sprinkle all over with cheese. Arrange the vegetables in the baking dish in 2 stacked layers, lining them up in the same direction. Pour the batter on top. Sprinkle with the remaining 2 tablespoons of cheese and bake in the center of the oven for about 45 minutes, until puffed, golden and set; cover the dish with foil halfway through to prevent over-browning. Let the clafoutis cool slightly, then cut into squares and serve. Recipes by

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS… “Christmas is a race to see which gives out first your money or your feet”!! The shops may have been laden with Christmas cheer for many weeks but I have happily turned a blind eye. Now that December has arrived and the Toy Show is over I am pushed along by the Christmas cheer and forced to start “making a list”. Often the most difficult thing about Christmas shopping is what gifts to buy. Many of the “dream toys” making the headlines do not encourage play that is sufficiently energetic to help keep kids healthy. Recommendations state that to help children avoid obesity and conditions like type II diabetes they should achieve a minimum of 60 minutes physical activity

everyday – they will not do this staring at a screen!! When writing to Santa, maybe children should be encouraged to ask for more active, mostly easily affordable options. • • • • • • • • • •

Skipping rope Football Hula hoop Frisbee Basketball hoop Tennis raquet Pogo stick Plug in & play dancemat Roller skates Nintendo Wii fit

For most of us the little people are a priority, but if you’re stuck for Christmas ideas why not consider a practical yet thoughtful gift. Orthopaedic pillows (€50), heat packs for neck and back (€35), are just some of the gift ideas which may bring a little comfort to your loved one. (Available in our clinic while stocks last).

“About all you can do is dream of a white Christmas, for it seems like it always leaves most of us in the red”. Wishing you & yours a very Happy & Healthy Christmas..

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! DURING A QUIET MOMENT THE HUSBAND AT A WHITE HOUSE DINNER, STORE MELANIA TRUMP LEANED OVER A store that sells new husbands has opened in TO CHAT WITH SECRETARY OF New York City, where a woman may go to choose a STATE, TILLERSON. husband. Among the instructions at the entrance is a I bought Donald a parrot for his birthday. That bird is so smart, Donald has already taught him to say more than two hundred words!” “Wow, that’s impressive,” said Tillerson, “but, you do realize he just speaks the words. He doesn’t really understand what they all mean.” “Oh, I know”, replied Melania, “but neither does the parrot.”

WHAT ARE THE THREE RINGS OF MARRIAGE? The engagement ring The wedding ring And the suffering

A WOMAN WAS IN BED WITH HER LOVER WHEN SHE HEARD HER HUSBAND OPENING THE FRONT DOOR

Hurry!” she said, “stand in the corner.” She quickly rubbed baby oil all over him and then she dusted him with talcum powder. “Don’t move until I tell you to,” she whispered. “Just pretend you’re a statue.” “What’s this, honey?” the husband inquired as he entered the room. “Oh, it’s just a statue,” she replied nonchalantly. “The Smiths bought one for their bedroom. I liked it so much, I got one for us too.” No more was said about the statue, not even later that night when they went to sleep. Around two in the morning the husband got out of bed, went to the kitchen and returned a while later with a sandwich and a glass of milk. “Here,” he said to the ‘statue’, “eat something. I stood like an idiot at the Smiths’ for three days and nobody offered me as much as a glass of water.”

TORQUING CARS! SIGN OF THE GOOD TIMES AS BUYERS LINE UP FOR NEW LUXURY €112,750 LEXUS LS SALOON

YOU know for sure the good times are rolling when big, luxury saloons such as the new Lexus LS flagship are back in demand. It has been absent from the Irish market for pretty much 10 years now. Such a car was not a priority in the recession. But now Lexus expect 35 people to buy a new hybrid LS 500h next year. Not bad for a car due here soon with prices ranging from €112,750 to €122,750 to €148,750 depending on just how luxurious you want your luxury to be.Buyers will be most impressed with the attention to detail in this. It is extraordinary, I think. Some models have folded-fabric door inserts, others boast inside-door handle surrounds of crystal-like design, echoing the car’s signature enormously aggressive front grille. This is the fifth generation LS. The first was sold in Ireland in 1990. Around 800 have been bought since (virtually all before the recession). So this is a rebirth, of sorts, for the marque which, I’m glad to say, is using its own Japanese craft and culture to make it a car that stands apart. Rivals include the Audi A8, BMW 7-series, Jaguar XJ, Mercedes S-Class, Porsche Panamera etc.Powered by a 3.5-litre (3,456cc) V6 petrol (299bhp) a lithium-ion battery pack and two electric motors, there is a combined multi stage hybrid system output of 359bhp, which means the LS is no slouch - it bolts from 0-100kmh in 5.5 seconds. Really impressive. Dynamically the LS lags the Merc but it beats the whole lot of them with its daring design This LS (all models are long wheelbase) has been five years in the making. And in that time they’ve revolutionised how they want their cars to look. Gone is the bland conservatism of old. In its place is an aggressive design that you love, or not.(Indo Motoring )

TYRED’ OF HAVING NO SPARE WHEEL

Maybe it is the time of year and people are getting more punctures, but we’re receiving a lot of complaints about the lack of spare wheels. It is fair to say that most people have no desire to be sloping around in the pouring rain trying to get mobile again. It is equally fair to say that, spare or not, many would call roadside assistance anyway. Yet a common query to Motors has been: “Why can’t I just have a spare in the boot like in my last car? I felt reassured.” The fact is you can’t in many cases - often because you didn’t ask. Car makers are not putting them in because they add weight. And those few kilos can make the difference between a car nudging under a certain emissions level or not. If it doesn’t, you pay more for the car in VRT and road tax. But there is a potential solution. Ask for a spare in your new car when you’re buying. If a dealer does charge it won’t be much more than €100/€150 on average. This is a recurring issue, though, and there is no doubt, if you haven’t already done so, you should check your boot now. Always take great care if changing a tyre on the roadside. (indo motoring)

CAR ADVICE WITH HONEST JOHN – YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY

My Land Rover Freelander is almost three years old and has done 20,000 miles. The replacement model is the Discovery Sport, which can currently be supplied only with a diesel engine. Those are getting a very bad press at the moment and I am told Land Rover is bringing out a petrol version later this year. Should I wait? RH H.J... I tested the new Ingenium petrol engine in the F-Pace and it works well. The problem is that Jaguar does not want to sell many vehicles with this engine because it will raise the company’s corporate average CO2, leading to EC penalties. The same goes for BMW and Mercedes-Benz, both of which also have 2.0-litre petrol engines. On the other hand, VW has recently announced a range of low-CO2 1.4 petrol engines for its Tiguan SUV.

TORQUING CARS! ANGRY NEIGHBOUR SPRAY PAINTS VERY RUDE WORD AND DOUBLE YELLOW LINES AROUND BADLY PARKED CAR IN STREET An irate vandal spray-painted the C-word around a car parked in a double yellow line zone on a residential street.

Workmen had dug up the gutter of the road but failed to paint fresh double yellow lines - so an angry resident took matters into their own hands. The vandal sprayed DIY double yellows around a parked car, along with the 4 letter word !’. The shocking scene appeared overnight in Swindon, Wiltshire, and outraged neighbours. Kenneth Brown, 38, said: “Where they’ve dug up the road you get people parking. “It creates chaos along the road. People can’t get past.”Councillor Jim Robbins, who represents the Mannington and Western area, said: “I heard reports of the graffiti early this morning and reported it to the parish and the council. “The parish manager responded immediately to say that they would have a team out today to deal with it. “The ward councillors have been pushing the borough to get the yellow lines repainted which is causing the parking problems in the area, but keep getting vague assurances about when they will be done.

GONE IN 60 SECONDS: HI-TECH THIEVES STEAL MERCEDES IN JUST A MINUTE WITHOUT NEEDING THE KEYS

Police have released CCTV footage of one of the first “relay crimes” to be caught on camera - where thieves can steal a car without needing keys. Two men are seen on the footage carrying relay boxes to the male victim’s house at 9pm on September 24, West Midlands Police said. The footage shows the thieves using the devices to steal a Mercedes parked on a driveway in Solihull, West Midlands. The boxes are designed to receive a signal from the car key inside the property - which can be picked up through walls, doors and windows - and then transfer the signal to a second box next to the car.taking just one minute, the vehicle’s systems are then tricked into thinking that the key is present, subsequently unlocking it.One of the men can then be seen driving off in the car, which has still not been recovered. Sergeant Tim Evans, of Solihull Police, said: “It’s important the public are reassured that we are taking proactive steps to tackle this type of crime in Solihull. “We hope that knowledge of this type of crime will enable members of the public to take simple steps to secure their vehicle and assist us.”Mark Silvester of the force’s crime reduction team has issued advice on how people can protect their cars against the theft.

RANGE ROVER PLUG-INS TO COST FROM €90,050; HERE IN APRIL

Range Rover’s first plug-in hybrids will get here around April . The Range Rover PHEV will cost from €130,185. On the face of it, that is nearly €10,000 more than the existing entry level vehicle (diesel). But it boasts a searing 404PS (2-litre Ingenium 4cyl petrol and battery) compared with the 258PS for the conventional V6 stablemate. And there’s something else: road tax will be a mere €170 a year. Prices for the Range Rover Sport will start from €90,050 (v €94,280). It also incurs just €170 road tax. They claim the P400e plug-in 4x4s emit a mere 64g/km. And they claim 2.8l/100km (101mpg) based on use of electric-only range 51km. They also cite a rapid charging time (two hrs 45mins). A special home charger comes free with each model. The two ‘firsts’ from the luxury brand coincide with a facelift for the entire range. (indo motoring)

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR FIRST PART OF THE REVIEW OF THE YEAR 2017: It’s that time of the year when we look back on what happened over the past 12 months. Now any look back will only scratch the surface and there will be things that are overlooked they you the reader will be throwing your eyes up to heaven and saying how did he leave that out? So there is a challenge to you this Christmas – if there is a major sporting event I missed then please email me and assure you I will give you sporting highlight a mention either next week or in the first issue of 2018! GAA THOUGHTS: For many the fact that the Sam Maguire is not back in the county is a disappointment. Kerry did win the League defeating Dublin and went to a replay in the All Ireland semi-final but even if they defeated Mayo would they have beaten Dublin for a second time. The jury is still out in that one. However the highlight of the GAA season is arguably the Kerry minors win and the display of David Clifford in the four in a row. It will be interesting to see how many of these players make the breakthrough over the next few years. Off the field the drop of the minors to 17’s at Inter County level but no internally within the county should be interesting. While the new Centre of Excellence at Currans will open and one wonders how this will work out both from a playing and financial point of view. The hurlers continued to impress and have a new format to look forward to while underage hurling again brought honours to the county and of course only last week Clanmaurice suffered the pain of an All-Ireland camogie final defeat but boy did those girls and their management do the county proud. And the county celebrated an underage camogie All Ireland earlier in the year. SOCCER SHORTS: From a Republic of Ireland point of view reaching the World Cup playoff was an achievement but that play-off defeat still leaves a bad

56

TRALEE ADVERTISER

taste and was a very disappointing way to finish the year for all soccer fans. In the League of Ireland the achievements of our nearest League of Ireland club were a joy to watch with the Cork City men’s team winning the League and Cup double, a rare achievement and the Cork City ladies taking the FAI Women’s Cup. Locally we had teams in the 15’s and 17’s League of Irelands as part of the new Player Development Plan for the game. While these are certainly squads that need money to keep on the field there is no doubt about how much they benefit the elite players. The next plan for the FAI is to launch an u13 League of Ireland and whether Kerry enters this and stays in the 15’s will be the subject of discussions between the Schoolboys League and the clubs. The KDL will also have to explore whether to enter the u19’s League of Ireland. They are currently working on plans for a second All Weather pitch at Mounthawk Park which will be a huge addition to the sporting landscape of the town. On and Off the Horse: For Tralee’s Bryan Cooper it was a mixed year with injuries and a new job but as they say class is permanent and he is still enjoying many visits to the winner’s enclosures. With his father Tom continuing to train winners and other jockey’s like Oisin Murphy and Jack Kennedy racing is as strong as ever in the county. ON THE HARDWOOD: The Gravey’s Tralee Warriors are having another very decent season and at the time of writing are still in the Cup while they also continue to push for League honours. Loosing Ryan Leonard to the US left a gap the club has recruited well and a number of local players have certainly stepped up to the mark. A trip to a home game by the Warriors is a must if you have not been there as there is not a lot to match an exciting basketball game in a packed Sports Complex. ON THE BIKE: Cycling is a sport that is growing by the year with a number of Friday 8th December 2017

very good young riders in the town. However it was one of the ‘evergreen’ riders that was again winning national honours with Sean Lacey winning the National Road Series. LOTS OF OTHER SUCCESSES: I could fill the whole column looking back at the many other sports that I did not mention. For example in greyhound racing and coursing Kerry will always be up there with the best in the country and the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium is a huge asset to the town. We didn’t mention motorsport, swimming especially in the sea, Community Games, athletics – track and field or triathlon to name but a few. But we do need to say thank you each and every sports person that takes part and to the hundreds and hundreds of coaches who give their time from the youngest to the most elite for all their work. Here is a (very!) brief look at the first four months of the year from a Kerry point of view. We will have part two of our Review of 2017 May to December in next week’s edition which is our final one of 2017. If there is any moment that really stood out for you please email us (traleeadvertiser@gmail.com) and tell us why. We might even include it next week! MAY THE SOD REST GENTLY ON THEIR SOULS: At this time of the year before we look back on the highlights we take a minute to remember those that we have lost during the year. From the high profile to the volunteer who loved being in the background but who was a vital cog in their sporting field we fondly remember them all. THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM JANUARY: Jack Kennedy rides his 100th race and first Group 1 on Outlander in the Lexus Chase. Insurance crisis had the potential to scupper rallying in the country. Paul Galvin moves clubs in Dublin

while the Kerry u21’s represented the county in the McGrath Cup opener against Tipperary winning by 14 points. Kerry go on to beat Limerick in the final. Donaghy and Cooper commit to Kerry for the 2017 season. The year started on a downer for Tralee’s Ultan Dillane as he missed out on Six Nations opener. Warriors beat Keane’s in the Castleisland Blitz final and then beat Demon’s in the League. Ryan Leonard and Garry Fernane selected on the Irish u20 Men’s team. Skellig Shane won the Kingdom Coursing Cup while Reikers Island won the Corn Na Feile Puppy event. Kerry soccer voted to continue in the League of Ireland. Graham Shine was appointed as the Kerry Ladies Senior Manager. Kerry hurlers give Cork a freight in the Munster League. Tralee Harriers win Munster Indoor gold in the u23 4x200 relay while Patsy O’Connor wins gold in Munster Masters. FEBRUARY: The Kingdom Greyhound Stadium becomes the only venue in the country to race four nights a week. St Brendan’s Park withdraw their senior team from the KDL but are back in the League for this season. John Egan calls time on a stellar Inter County hurling career that saw him win multiple hounours. Kingdom Wheelblasters hold their inaugural basketball blitz with over 60 wheelchair athletes taking part. Sarah O’Shea who has a number of family connections in Tralee leaves FAI to become Honorary Secretary of the Olympic Council of Ireland. Glenbeigh Glencar becomes All Ireland Junior title. Kerry District League well beaten by Dublin AUL in Oscar Traynor. MARCH: Kerry’s Sean Walsh comes up just short in battle for GAA Presidency. Lacey Cup gets the cycling season underway with Sean Hahessy of Aqua Blue taking the win while Cathal Moynihan wins Michael Shiels Race. The Sem Killarney win Corn Ui Mhuiri final defeating Tralee CBS in the final. Tralee Tigers SuperLeague winning team of 25 years ago celebrated at Warriors game. Kieran Donaghy joins Ryan Leonard and Cian O’Sullivan on 20 man Irish basketball squad. Dingle teenager Jack Kennedy wins the Supreme Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham. Killarney Celtic defeat Janesboro in front of 3,000 fans at Celtic Park in FAI Junior Cup quarter final. They lose on penalties to eventual winners Sherriff United from Dublin. Dr Crokes reach the pinnacle of the club game being crowned All Ireland champions.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER Kerry and Dublin draw in front of sold out crowd in Austin Stacks Park and then defeat Tyrone to reach the latter stages of the League. Kerry handballer Dominic Lynch wins his 25th All Ireland title. Tralee’s Derek Griffin wins the Half Marathon section of the Tralee International Marathon. APRIL: Kerry wins their 20th National League title defeating Dublin and ending their 4 year reign as Champions. This was Kerry’s first League title since 2009. Over 180 riders made up the international peloton of the Kerry Group Ras Mumhan with the title going to UK rider Dillon Byrne of the VCUK Velochampion team while Mark O’Callaghan won the Drumm Cup in Currow. The death was announced of Vincent Linnane who was involved in sport in Tralee all his life and was the affable grounds man at the Austin Stack Park since 1989. Killarney defeat Tralee in the final of the Galway-Foley Cup in rugby. Cricket in Kerry has a new home with the opening of the picturesque Oyster Oval in Fenit. Kerry camogie was celebrating a first All Ireland title as they won the u18 Strike final with a comprehensive win over Wicklow. A CONDENSED NEWS SECTION: PLENTY OF ACTION AT THE TRACK BEFORE THE BREAK: This Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium it’s the three second round heats of the Nolan’s CVRT Test Centre Castleisland Kingdom Derby. The following night the highlights are the semifinals of the Track Supporters Club A7 525 yards plus. The Saturday night is also a benefit night for the County Kerry Coursing Club. The track is taking entries for the Track Supporters Club A1 confined 525 yards starting on Friday December 14th. After the Christmas break racing is back on Friday December 29th only with the first meeting of 2018 on January 2nd. ST BRENDAN’S / OAKPARK COMMUNITY GAMES REVIEW: It was a good year for the St Brendan’s Oakpark Community Games club with over 100 competitors in action. A good number of athletes from the area completed at the Munster and National Finals with great success. Fiona Morris stepped down a Secretary after 3 years of dedicated service to the area. She will be staying on the committee so her knowledge and experience will not be lost. Carmel Kelly has also been thanked for all her hard work over the past 5 years as PRO. The club is now making plans for 2018 and details will be announced in the New Year and volunteers will be required to give the children of

the area the chance they deserve to take part in the Community games alongside their friends and neighbours. A CLEAN UP AHEAD OF SANTA’S VISIT: This Sunday December 10th volunteers will be out on the beach in Fenit doing a pre-Christmas clean-up and all help will be greatly appreciated. Also on this Sunday it’s the final swim of the Turkey Series with the draw taking place the following Sunday. Swimmers have been given one ticket for each swim The annual Christmas Day Swim, one of the biggest in the country, will again be taking place this year with the proceeds as always going to the RNLI Fenit Lifeboat. Swimmers will take to the water at 12 noon after the singing of some carols. Hot refreshments will warm everybody up afterwards. TRALEE ROWING CLUB’S SUCCESS ON AND OFF THE WATER: The Tralee Rowing Club is celebrating success on and off the water. At the Muckross Head of the River Bela Winde won the J16 X1 (scull) after clocking 12.27 for the 3000 meters at the National Rowing Centre where the HOR took place. The German national joined the Tralee Rowing Club this season having come to Tralee as an exchange student. He has been rowing in Germany for over 4 years. Off the water junior member Nicolas Larkin took 1st place in the Provinces Irish Indoor Rowing Championships taking the Junior 14 time lapsed race with an impressive 1.181 meters in 4 minutes. The club had a number of other rowers in both competitions and all performed very well showing the strength of the Tralee Rowing Club. GARVEY’S TRALEE WARRIORS BANISH DEMONS WITH SUPER SUNDAY WIN GARVEY’S TRALEE WARRIORS 89 UCC DEMONS 76 Garvey’s Tralee Warriors put their fans at a packed Sport Complex in the Christmas spirit with a 13 point win over UCC Demons. The home side were excellent under both boards to put down a big marker before these sides meet again in a few days in the Cup, this time away in Cork. But it was the visitors that started the brighter and they were 2917 ahead at the end of the first quarter. The Warriors needed to up their intensity and they did this in the second quarter with Pantovic, Quigley and Pemberton hitting important three pointer as they sides ended the first half tied at 47 points each. Donaghy got the scoring started in the third quarter and with some pin point accuracy the Warriors had opened a gap of

15 points 75-60. Roared on by the home crowd the home side were never going to let this chance of an important win slip and despite Demons closing to within 6 at one stage the Warriors again eased away and won by 13. Take it dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your Heart where your Father sees it, then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer.
