Wishing you a very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year

Chris & Colette

First issue of 2018 comes out on Friday the 5th of January We hope you enjoy reading this , our final issue of 2017 ... as you head into the festivities. From what Im hearing out and about in Tralee, Business has been pretty good so far in the lead up to now and the weather , so far , has played its part ...fingers crossed for the next few weeks as owners , managers and staff all put their efforts into making sure that the year finishes out well.... It seems a far cry from the time when the ‘Black Friday ‘concept was embraced by Irish business only 7 years ago to try to get consumers spending , as the Trioka ‘Austerity budgets were then happening in the month of December and the consensus was that the ‘Christmas Spend ‘ just may not happen ...so ‘Black Friday ‘ was adopted to try to encourage us to spend a little !! Now it seems like a monkey on retailers back ..how times have changed ! And we, The Tralee Advertiser have changed too! The Tralee Advertiser is an important element in the fabric of everyday life in Tralee. We report, we

support , we promote, we encourage ...and why ? Its all for the betterment of Tralee as a place to live and work . We now publish with pride , a bigger and we hope , better , weekly magazine , and report “Whats happening in Tralee “ as our tag line says ! This little publication would in no way exist without you, its readers who demand to read it each week nor without our Advertisers who ensure that we can bring this magazine to you FREE every week. At this time of year , as throughout the year , we urge you sincerely to support them, our local business, , to buy local , because thats where a lot of our livelihoods come from ....the local economy .If it does well , we all do well! A big thank you to our contributors, who help keep us fresh, current and topical, Geraldine in Siamsa Tire, Rebecca in BexBlah beauty & Fitness, Miriams Legal Corner , Billy from HRI in Tech Corner, Frances in Citizens information, John Drummey in Tralee Chamber Alliance, Chef Noel with his new venture Croi, Our photographers both the public and the

professionals, John and Martin Cleary & Domnick Walsh . Also Pat Harnett for all his in depth Sports analysis Our backroom team , The Keanes & Co at Kingdom Printers and Rafal , our excellent creative hardworking graphic designer from Expose Design, who both ensure we deliver an excellent publication EVERY week ! And to everybody else who send us in photos , articles , poems , stories and so much more , a big thank you. Keep doing it ...we really do appreciate it . We are looking forward to a little break now ....50 issues back to back and still here We start all over again on January 5th with our first issue of 2018. We are delighted to see our Digital Edition of the Tralee Advertiser grow so well in the last 12 months. This addition to the Advertiser gives everybody the ability to read, on their smartphone or Tablet/ iPad , any where in the world , the most recent edition of The Tralee Advertiser and see “Whats really happening in Tralee !”

We hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Peaceful New Year Chris & Colette Shortt

LEGAL CORNER

The More you tell the more you sell!!!

Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES RENTING PROPERTY Edward is wondering what is his legal position is in relation to his lease of rented property. First off it should be noted that there is no legal requirement for a landlord to provide you with a lease and neither is there an obligation on you to sign a lease if you do not wish to do so and you still have legal rights under the Residential Tenancies Acts as amended. If you do decide to sign a lease it cannot take away from your rights under the legislation and the terms of the tenancy cannot be changed during the lease period unless you and the Landlord both agree. Since a lease is legally binding and usually ties you in for a set period of time you should read it carefully and always get a second opinion if possible a legal opinion on it. It’s very important to note that there is no cooling off period like a consumer online contract. If for whatever reason you break the lease or do not give proper notice of leaving the property, it may give your landlord reason to keep your deposit or make deductions from it. They may seek to cover costs incurred such as re advertising, re-letting costs or lost rent. You should seek evidence of this. Other reasons for holding onto a deposit would be breakages/damage aside from wear and tear and unpaid bills You may be asked for certain documentation like your PPS Number, a reference from your current employer, Photo I.D. or a bank statement but you should only hand these over if you are being offered a tenancy. Your Landlord should give you all his contact details as well. Unfortunately there are some scams out there so a person must be careful when looking to rent, be careful of online ads and only look for a reputable landlord or estate agent. Don’t be rushed in handing over money and DO NOT hand over cash and always insist upon a proper receipt. This should always be done at the property and it’s vital that the keys work and you have proper contact details for the landlord/agent. Always photograph the premises when you go into it as evidence of the state of the premises on letting. Landlords have to maintain their properties to a certain standard for their tenants. You have a right to peaceful and exclusive possession without disturbance. Landlords can enter to do repairs on reasonable notice with prior agreement with you. Unfortunately tenants rights do not extend to lodging situations. Legal Quip:

A New Year Resolution – goes in one year and out the other.

THIS YEAR, SUPPORT OXFAM TRALEE BY PUTTING THE GIFT OF HOPE ON YOUR CHRISTMAS LIST After a year of unprecedented humanitarian crises, this Christmas you can help people find “hope in unexpected places” Think of drought, conflict or disease and “hope” probably won’t be your first reaction. Especially when you consider that in the last twelve months, an unprecedented number of people have been affected by disasters, wars and food shortages. In fact today, 65.6 million people globally are displaced, more than ever before. If you or your family were one of those 65 million living in makeshift refugee camps with only basic facilities or had had your livelihood destroyed by a flood or hurricane, it’s unlikely you’d expect to find a great deal of hope. But you might be surprised. Because this Christmas, Oxfam Ireland has a bumper 4

range of its seasonal Unwrapped gift cards as well as items like festive toys, games and Christmas decorations for sale which are available at Oxfam Ireland’s shop at Abbey Court, Tralee. By buying from this range you’ll be helping to generate the precious gift of hope in in an unexpected place like a refugee camp, a war torn region or a country devastated by a natural disaster. The gifts are available nationally from our network of shops or from www. oxfamireland.org Hope might be buying a Survival Kit for just €16. By doing this you’ll provide hygiene essentials like soap and sanitary towels. Hope could mean gifting someone a Refugee Support Pack costing €30 which contains winter clothes, food and shelter so that they can start rebuilding their lives. Hope might simply Friday 15th December 2017

be purchasing a pair of thermal socks for €7 from one of the Oxfam Ireland shops which will generate revenue for our work. This year Oxfam has also launched its largest-ever range of presents. There are many fun-filled offerings including more of the popular handmade eco-friendly Fair Trade gifts such as the Bird House made from recycled materials – €12 With festive treats for foodies, kits for creative craftivists, toys for kids of all ages, and wonderful winter warmers – everything from seasonal Mulled Wine Spices (€5), gloves (€2), candles (from

€2) and novelty socks (€2) – these presents will make the perfect addition to Christmas hampers, stocking fillers for family and friends or end of term gifts for teachers.

We brought a house in town a few years back, but to meet our family’s needs, we would like to build an extension (living accommodation) that will give a wow factor. What is your advice? Frank & Laura, Tralee.

Mon 18th at 7.30pm FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK Annual showcase of Hip-Hop, Freestyle and Contemporary style dance from the Cassie Leen School of Dance

When considering an extension to your home, it is perhaps easier to play it safe and go with a design that is very much in keeping with the existing house. However, if you want to make a statement with your build then it can be worth it. This provides an opportunity to look at alternative solutions and break away from the comfort zone of something more traditional.

Tickets: €15/11

Fri 29th & Sat 30th Dec Tues 2nd – Thurs 4th Jan CINDERELLA Christmas Panto Oliver Hurley Productions A tremendous treat for all the family! Audiences are guaranteed a colourful and exciting production performed by a talented cast of singers, dancers and comedians. A night of laughter and magic – don’t miss it! We recommend this production for children of all ages, from 5 to 95! Tickets: €18/16 Family of 4: €65 Family of 5: €80

There are a couple of routes to consider, such as renovating the existing to match the new or create the extension to be remarkably different from the existing. An option is to create a link between the old and new. This link could be in glass or be clad in cedar or zinc. The link will also help with the scale and the mass of the building as a whole. A contemporary extension needs an open plan living space which should be bright and airy. This can be achieved via different methods, like with a large wall of glass (doors & windows), from floor to ceiling. Glazed roof panels will also do the trick and allows light to penetrate deep into the house. You will also get the sun’s warmth too. Dividing up the space internally doesn’t have to be solid walls. Glazed screens will allow light through, low level walls, furniture will all help to give definition to the particular space. Artificial light is important too. There are a lot of lights and systems on the market now that can simply transform a space by a simple switch. Smart technology can control the mood through various gadgets. A contemporary extension should really have minimal detail, smooth surfaces with clean sharp edges at the various junctions. To read more on this topic, please check out the full article on our website blog.

Are you a nervous patient?

For those individuals who are nervous or even fearful of dental treatment, there are a variety of helpful aids that we offer to help reduce anxiety: • We Offer patients time, respect, compassion and understanding. All the staff at Bridge Place Dental Practice are very experienced dealing with nervous patients. Our dentists listen carefully to you in an accepting and non-judg mental way, and offer assurances that you are in control of the situation at all times. • Oral sedation. This refers to taking prescribed medication an hour or so before a dental appointment for a calming effect. • IV or intravenous (“intra” – inside; “venous” – vein) sedation. This is the next level of sedation administered if oral sedation is not enough to facilitate needed dental treatment. In this case, the sedative medication is delivered through a small needle or catheter placed in your arm. IV sedation is included in ALL our implant procedures at no extra cost.

We would like to wish all of our patients a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New year! Call Chris or Colette Tel: 066-7126399 or e-mail : traleeadvertiser@gmail.com

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... ITS A FAMILY AFFAIR SAYS JOHN AS CELSIUS MENSWEAR ARE BACK !!

It must have been a proud moment for John Murphy when he recently opened , once again, the door to his brand new Menswear shop , Celsius in a very prominent location in Russell Street , Tralee .Alongside him are family members Frankie and Mike as they welcomed both old and new friends to their bright modern spacious store which by now is full of up to the minute styles and all the latest trends . “Its great to see so many of our old customers welcoming us back ...in fact that was a major factor in encouraging me to open the doors again ...says John ..You see , Celsius and John have been here before as it was one of Tralees most successful Mens stores less than 10 years ago , with locations in both Abbeycourt and Ashe street , But after the stores closed , John kept his passion for menswear going and continued to work in the Menswear sector . Yes they were difficult times for everybody says John but I’Ve always been able to deliver good value and fashionable clothes to my customers and I knew I could do it again ...John has over 30 years experience in Menswear and you can see this in the wide variety of styles available in his quite spacious store ... padded jackets , Denim jeans , Blazers , fashionable knitwear , edgy shirts ,... this store has it all ! We hope to go online also in the New year says John ..but really I get such a kick out of welcoming people into my store and helping them look good , that Im still wary of online but Frankie tells me its the way to go !!” laughs John ..... Somehow I think that the internet is going to have a hard job trying to match the level of service and style that John and the Celsius team are delivering ! AWARE SEEKING TRALEE VOLUNTEERS TO JOIN THE SUPPORT SERVICES TEAM Aware, Ireland’s leading organisation providing support, education and information services for those impacted by depression and bipolar disorder, is urgently seeking volunteers from the Tralee area to facilitate the local Support & Self Care Group (St John’s Parish Centre, Castle Street, Tralee). Aware Support & Self Care Groups are peer to peer support meetings for individuals who experience depression, bipolar disorder or mood related conditions. Each meeting is facilitated by two volunteers, with 37 groups nationwide, meeting on a weekly basis. No prior qualifications or experience is required, as comprehensive training as well as ongoing support and education is provided by the organisation. Aware is also recruiting volunteers for other support services to include Support Mail, Life Skills Online and the Dublin based Support Line.

make a very real difference in the lives of others each and every day. It can also be a very rewarding experience for the volunteer themselves and offers an opportunity to benefit from award-winning training, enhance existing life skills and develop new ones.” As part of the recruitment process, all volunteers are guided through a series of training sessions to teach them how to respond to various scenarios by allowing clarification, consideration of options and encouraging helpful actions while adhering to Aware’s ethos, policies and procedures. It is important that potential volunteers are compassionate, possess good communication skills, take direction and show enthusiasm and passion for mental health and the work of Aware. It is also vital that applicants

are willing to make a weekly commitment to Aware and participate in ongoing training as required. “Volunteering with Aware is the most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done. I think for the volunteering experience to work, you have to connect with what the organisation is trying to do, get good training and feel like you are well supported. My experience with Aware has ticked all these boxes and then some.” “Volunteering for Aware has changed my life. I absolutely love it. I am so proud of myself and how my own confidence has grown. If I feel like I haven’t accomplished much in a week I simply look back to my time on the support line and the knowledge that I’ve helped someone makes me realise how much I really have

achieved.” “Volunteering with Aware has taught me so much, but most importantly what I have learned is how to be a better listener.” “Some people call the Support Line thinking their lives are in a mess. I love to talk with them, listen and help them work through their problem. We discuss helpful options and they finish feeling better and much clearer about the next steps in their recovery.” For more information on each opportunity, please visit: www. aware.ie/volunteer or phone Aware on 01 6617211.

Brid O’Meara, Director of Services, Aware commented: “Aware Support Services offer a crucial lifeline for individuals and families impacted by depression and bipolar disorder. Without the dedication and commitment of our volunteers, it would not be possible to provide these free and essential support services nationwide. Our volunteers are vital to this organisation and 20

A GUY PICKING UP HIS KIDS AT SCHOOL SEES ANOTHER KID AND SAYS LOUDLY “GOD, WHAT AN UGLY KID!”

The person standing next to him says “he’s my son...” The guy, pretty embarassed, replies “oh man, I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were his father” “I’m his mom..

He goes to the French and says “I have these commandments” The French ask, “What do they say?” God replies, “Well there’s one here, ‘Do not commit adultery’.” The French say, “We are not interested, go away.” So God goes to the Germans and says “I have these commandments” The Germans ask, “What do they say?” God replies, “Well there’s one here, ‘Do not kill’.” The Germans say, “I don’t think so.” So God goes to the Jews and says “I have these commandments” The Jews ask, “How much are they?” God replies, “They’re free!” The Jews reply, “We’ll take ten.”

AN ENGLISHMAN, A SCOTSMAN, AND AN IRISHMAN JOHN WAS IN AN ACCIDENT AND HIS FACE WAS BADLY DIED DRIVING HOME FROM A BURNED. HOLIDAY PARTY.... An Englishman, a Scotsman, and an Irishman are met by Saint Peter at the pearly gates...

‘’In honor of this holy season’’ Saint Peter said, ‘’You must each possess something that symbolizes Christmas to get into heaven.’’ The Englishman fumbled through his pockets and pulled out a lighter. He flicked it on. ‘’It’s a candle’’, he said. ‘’You may pass through the pearly gates’’ Saint Peter said. The Scotsman reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of keys. He shook them and said, ‘’They’re bells.’’ Saint Peter said ‘’You may pass through the pearly gates’’. The Irishman started searching desperately through his pockets and finally pulled out a pair of women’s knickers . St. Peter looked at the man with a raised eyebrow and asked, “And just what do those symbolize?” The Irishman replied, “These are Carol’s.”

I WAS VISITING MY DAUGHTER LAST NIGHT WHEN I ASKED IF I COULD BORROW A NEWSPAPER.

The doctors couldn’t reconstruct his face with John’s own skin because he was so skinny. But his wife said they could use hers. The doctor decided that the best skin to be used was from her butt. So they took her skin and reconstructed Johns face. After the surgery he looked better than ever! His entire family was amazed, but none of them ever learned where the skin came from; they assumed it was his own. One night John is overcome with emotion so he begins to cry and tells his wife “I love you so much. I’m so grateful for your sacrifice.” She shrugs and says “Honey, all of the thanks I need comes when your mother kisses you on the cheek.”

AN OLD LADY AT THE ATM

the old lady in front of me at the ATM was taking a while. When done, she turned around and asked me to check her balance... so I pushed her!

“Its the 21st century” she said, “We dont waste money on newspapers anymore. Here, use my IPad.” I can tell you this... That fly never knew what hit him.

GOD IS TRYING TO FIND SOMEONE TO GIVE HIS COMMANDMENTS TO. 26

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: BUYING GOODS ONLINE Question I have ordered a few presents from a Belgian website. Can I return them if I change my mind when I get them?

Padraig & Ladies from Manor Gym who had their Christmas lunch at Manor Hotel. After lunch they enjoyed a mini fashion show from Paco Tralee.

Answer Online purchases from businesses based in the EU are covered by the EU Directive on Consumer Rights. Under this Directive you are entitled to a cooling-off period of 14 days. During the cooling-off period, you can cancel distance contracts such as online purchases without giving a reason and without incurring charges or penalties, other than possible charges incurred in returning the goods. The 14-day cooling-off period begins on the day that you receive the goods. Upon cancellation, the distance seller is obliged to repay you within 14 days, including delivery costs. If you chose a more expensive type of delivery than the seller’s cheapest standard delivery, you are only entitled to be refunded the cost of the cheaper delivery type. The seller can withhold the repayment until the goods are returned or until you supply evidence that you have sent the goods back. You must send the goods back within 14 days of informing the seller of the cancellation. You may have to pay for the cost of returning them. The seller must inform you of such costs before you complete the purchase. The seller should also have provided you with confirmation of the contract, as well as information on aftersales and guarantees, how to cancel the contract and a postal address for complaints. If the seller did not provide you with information on your right to cancel, the cooling-off period can be extended by 12 months. Some purchases are not covered by the cooling-off period. These include customised or perishable goods and bookings for transport or accommodation.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... INSPIRATIONAL EVELYN RECEIVES GAISCE GOLD AWARD FROM PRESIDENT Wednesday December 6th, saw inspirational young person Evelyn Dore from Tralee receive her prestigious Gaisce Gold Award from President Michael D. Higgins at a special awards ceremony in Dublin Castle. Evelyn was amongst 55 young people from across Ireland who received their Gold Award on the day. Between them they dedicated more than 12,000 hours to receiving their awards. Since its inception in 1985 an estimated 150,000 young Irish people have completed a Gaisce Award, including former Rose of Tralee Maria Walsh and Irish rugby international and Connaught player Robbie Henshaw. Gaisce – The President’s Award is a direct challenge from President Michael D. Higgins to young people aged 15-25 to dream big and realise their potential, push their boundaries and develop skills which will stand to them throughout their lives. This year’s Gold Awardees have successfully completed five challenge areas for 52 weeks or more – volunteering with a charity or community group, developing an existing skill or learned something new,

became more active through sport or exercise, took part in a four-day adventure journey discovering the great outdoors as part of a team, and broadened their horizons on a five day residential stay away from home. All Awardees previously received the Gaisce Bronze and Silver awards. For her Community Involvement Evelyn Dore was a Cub Scout Leader with her Local Scout Unit. For her Physical Recreation she chose swimming which she still continues and hopes to take the plunge and join a sea swimming club. For her Personal Skill, Evelyn took up photography with the Killarney Camera club, where she is still a member. As a photographer, she had always wanted to see India and decided that for her Adventure Journey, she would travel to India and trek in the Himalayas. For Evelyn though, the stand out challenge of her Gold Award was the residential which saw her take on a ten day silent retreat encompassing 100 hours of meditation. Special Guest, President Michael D. Higgins addressed the audience during the

ceremony “It gives me great pleasure to be here with you today to recognise the dedication, perseverance and generosity of our Gaisce Gold recipients, and to present 55 talented young people with their award. Today marks the conclusion of a journey – a journey in which you tested yourselves, through your thoughts and actions, first discovering and then surpassing your own limits. It was a journey in which you demonstrated not only a personal determination, but also a commitment to the service of your communities and of your fellow citizens.

Today is a day on which you, your families and friends, your teachers and mentors, and all those who helped you on your path to the Gold award, can justly feel very proud of your accomplishment.” 25,000 young people registered to take part in 2017 and Gaisce’s aim is that 35,000 young people will register each year by 2020, the 35th anniversary of Gaisce, so that every young person has the opportunity to participate in the programme and realise their dreams and ambitions.

ARE YOU DOING KRIS KINDLE (OR SECRET SANTA) THIS CHRISTMAS? Ok, so your family has opted for Kris Kindle and you have gone into an immediate panic. How in all reality can you find clever, inspired and attractive gifts for everyone with a spending cap of €50 each? Fear not... Tralee Advertiser got advice from an expert. Heather for John Ross Jewellers told us how to solve this problem...

SOLUTION #1 - WHAT TO BUY FOR A WOMAN...

CLUSE is still Europe’s top selling watch brand. Everybody wants one, but at €89.95 the watch itself might be outside your budget. Instead, buy the matching bracelet. From €39.95 to €55, CLUSE’s new jewellery range is super fun and will certainly make someone very happy.

SOLUTION #3 - SUITABLE FOR A MAN OR A WOMAN...

This year, there’s a HUGE trend for personalised jewellery. REBECCA have brought out gorgeous INITIALS that can be hung on a chain or a bracelet. €39 for a shining rosegold initial with a FREE chain.

even bigger selection of FRED BENNETT fashion jewellery for men. The starting price is an unbelievable €20 for a wristband or earrings.

SOLUTION #5 - THE SPORTS ENTHUSIAST... TOM HOPE anchor bracelets are the ideal gift for millennials. They have that understated cool and look great on Instagram selfies. From just €36 to €55, your problem could be solved.

SOLUTION #2 - WHAT TO BUY FOR A WATCH LOVER...

SOLUTION #4 - THE MALE JEWELLERY LOVER...

This Christmas we have an

in Tralee for the Christmas season until early January 2018. Every day after 1pm, on street and in Kerry County Council Carparks.

For just €45 to €50 you can buy a stylish and waterproof SWATCH watch. They come in all sorts of colours. There really is a model to suit everyone and they can be worn swimming or doing any outdoor activity. All these suggestions and more are available at John Ross Jewellers, Castle Street, Tralee. Bexblah Beauty This page is sponsored by Munster Robes & Kitchens

HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS! HAPPY (ALMOST) CHRISTMAS!

This is my last column of 2017 - what a year! So this week I’m doing my “Best Of Beauty 2017”. My Top 8 makeup products of 2017. I have talked about all of these multiple times and that’s exactly why they have made this list! Morphe X Jaclyn Hill Palette Ride or die Eyeshadow Palette of 2017 100%. Amazing quality, very affordable & available on Morphe.co.uk

Benefit Hoola Bronzer This Bronzer is a long time favourite. It’s the perfect shade and you can use to to contour too (I did on my Instastory recently). Number one Bronzer of 2017!

Too Faced Extreme Lip Injection 2017 was definitely the year of Gloss for me. I am obsessed with lipgloss, it makes your lips look so nice and full (and also photographs better).

Becca Champagne Pop Highlighter My number one highlighter. It lasts so long, is such good quality and I love this color on my skin.

Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer Best Concealer I own. Feels so light on the skin, has great coverage and it doesn’t crease up

Huda Beauty Faux Filter Foundation If you’re a full coverage queen like me then you will live and breathe for this foundation!! The coverage is absolutelya mazing and it doesn’t feel dry or heavy on my skin. If you prefer natural makeup then this is not for you.

Urban Decay 24/7 Lip Liner One of the nicest lip liner formulas I’ve tried. My favourite shade is Liar, it goes with SO many nudes!

So that’s my Top 10 Favourites of 2017. Every single product on this list I would recommend 110%! I will be back on January 5th with more beauty goodness for 2018, to keep up with my antics until then you can follow me on… Instagram - @bexblah Snapchat - @bexblahmakeup Facebook - Rebecca Shortt Makeup I hope you all have an amazing week!

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK! THIS WEEK IS MY LAST FITNESS PAGE OF 2017. Let me just start this by saying, if you are stressing over food or Christmas or anything like that, don’t. It’s Christmas. A time to relax and enjoy your time with your family. If you don’t “stay on track” for a few days, THATS FINE! There’s no point in stressing over food. It’s not worth it. Also, don’t start 2018 with a huge list of giant unachieveable goals. That will just put you off and you’ll feel like you should give up if you slip up even once. Start 2018 thinking about what will make you happy and healthy. Make your best efforts with that and the rest will come. Instead of waiting til January 1st to write a huge yearly goal list. Start writing small daily goals every day from tomorrow on. Why wait until a certain day or date or year to start working on yourself?

TIPS TO START THE NEW YEAR There’s no point trying to go from eating whatever you want to saying you’ll eat 100% clean in a week. You’ll get discouraged, and end up binging on whatever bad food you can get your hands on! So instead of cutting everything out straight away here’s a few tips: DRINK WATER: Start small, aim for 2 litres a day at first, then up it from there. Water really does flush out your system and it does wonders for your skin. Also our body can sometimes confuse dehydration for hunger. DONT CUT FOOD GROUPS: January is the time of year where you hear lots of people say “I’m just going to cut all carbs and eat low fat” NO. This will not get long term results.

CHRISTMAS RECIPES IT’S ALL ABOUT TIMING !! Christmas Eve

The day is getting closer and the heat is on. Jobs done on Christmas Eve will take the pressure off Christmas Day. • Set the table. A great way to make sure you have everything. • Sort all the cooking and serving dishes, the glasses, silverware and napkins for the dinner. • Put white wines and Champagne to chill. • Remove all frozen foods from the freezer. • Parboil the potatoes and parsnips for 15 mins, cool and keep refrigerated. • Trim the Brussels Sprouts and refrigerate.. • Stuff the turkey. • Get to bed at a reasonable time, always helps to start Christmas Day refreshed and well rested.

Woo hoo, it’s Christmas Day!

With all your food planning and preparation, you’ll be able to enjoy a stress free Christmas Dinner. Don’t forget to delegate - everyone can help out in some way - and most importantly enjoy! Here’s our step-bystep plan for the day - it’s based on eating at 2pm but you can easily adjust for the time you want to eat.

Time Plan

9.30am - Preheat oven to the recommended cooking temperature 10.00am - Start cooking the turkey 10.30am - Take the already prepared starters, vegetables and herbs out of the fridge to bring to room temperature 11am - Start steaming the Christmas puddings 1.15pm - Heat enough vegetable or olive oil to cover the bottom of a roasting tin. Add the parboiled potatoes to the hot oil - and add in a bit of the juices from the meat roasting tin (saving most for the gravy). Allow the potatoes to cook for around 40-45 minutes. Plus start to cook the parsnips and any other root vegetables. 1.30pm - Check the turkey is cooked and remove from the oven. Cover it in foil and leave to rest in a warm place. Start cooking the rest of vegetables - such as brussels sprouts and glazed carrots. Using the meat roasting tin, make the gravy. 1.45pm - Plate up the starter 1.50pm - Carve the turkey and place everything into warmed serving dishes 2.00pm - Time to sit down to eat - enjoy Recipes by

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... ANNE HELPS LAUNCH NEW ARTISTS IN TRALEE! Anne Lundon from Dingle Art School says“I came back from France to set up an art school to help others find the joy that I got from painting using a structured approach. Dingle Art School was founded by Anne , who has been painting for nearly 40 years, much of it in France. Anne studied at the Moore School of Art in Australia under Rod Moore, one of Australia’s leading impressionist artists. She is also a qualified Art Tutor and has a BA in Humanities.“ I am lucky to be able to teach beginners who like me had a dream of learning to paint. I use a simple and easy to follow method. So now it could be your turn! I hear you say “But I can’t draw a straight line!” My reply is “There are no straight lines in nature!” My classes are fun and extremely informative One of my first timers from

December’s class at the Station House , Blennerville called today and said “ I never in my wildest dreams thought that I could achieve the results that I did. The class has given me so much confidence” This is the joy that Art can bring. Equally this really encourages me to share it. They followed my Five Stages using Five colours and Five Brushes! Exciting part ! You do not need to be a great at drawing to complete these stages. Yay! I almost stopped my pursuit of painting because I couldn’t draw well! What a pity that would have been as I would have missed out on hours of joy. Art became a solace when times were difficult as I could become immersed for hours. My passion now is to share this with as many people as I can. The immense pleasure that I get when I see the EUREKA! Look on my students faces is brilliant. www.dingleartschool.ie

PRES GIRLS VISIT CAMERA CLUB EXHIBITION

As a continuation of their photography studies in 1st year Art at Presentation Secondary Tralee, the 1st year students visited the Ardfert Camera Club’s exhibition in the nearby County Library and invited the club to display their exhibition on the corridors of Pres Tralee. The stunning photographs have drawn huge attention from all the students and staff in the school –

not just the first years! On Wednesday 13th of December, members of the camera club, Steve Baker and Dillon Boyer, visited the school to meet with the members of the 1st year camera club committee to discuss the background of some of the photographs selected as favorites by the students. There was also an opportunity for the visitors to view some of the photographs

the 1st years themselves had taken as part of the Art programme earlier this year - particularly those which had a similar theme to those in the exhibition. Members of the 1st year camera club committee include: Amy Corridan, Sadhbh Lowth, Ellie Mason, Sarah Horan, Ria Harmon, Yvonne Hurley, Elizabeth Martins, Angel Quilligan, Cara Grealish,

Laura Somers, Taylor Rogers, Haliyah Mulumba, Alice O’Connell, Ellie O’Hanlon, Alysha McQuinn, Grainne Galvin, Rabeea Jahangir, and Hadil Zakrit. Art teachers Lily O’Sullivan and Alan O’Sullivan who coordinated the exhibition spoke of the huge benefit to the students of having such a wide range of professional images available for this week.

Merry Christmas to all our Readers!

HEALTHY WINTER SKIN Exposing our skin to central heating and harsh cold air may well leave it feeling de-hydrated. Drinking plenty of water is vital to moisturise the skin from the inside and it also helps to flush toxins away. Suffers of exceptionally dry skin may benefit from taking a daily supplement of HYALURONIC ACID during the winter months. It is naturally found in the body as part of the connective tissue. Hyaluronic acid holds up to 1000 times its own weight in water so is vital to retain moisture in the skin (available in capsule form). Give the skin a good nutritional boost: Include foods rich in Vitamin A, E, B, Zinc and Essential Fats. Fish, carrots, sweet potatoes, green leafy vegetables, berries, avocados, and pumpkin seeds are just some of the foods that will provide these nutrients. You can also supplement with a good multivitamin, such as SOLO MULTIFIFTY (one capsule per day). Another good choice would be ONE NUTRITION POWERGREEN (available in capsule or powder form) Good fats: Are essential and act as another internal moisturiser, may help to prevent flaky, dry skin. Oily fish, nuts, seeds and avocado all help to boost the intake of essential fatty acids. A daily dose of a good quality Omega 3 oil, such as ESKIMO, UDO’S or MOREPA will ensure your skin is well moisturised. Exercise: Will boost oxygen and blood flow to the skin bringing important nutrients and removing toxins from the skin cells and working up a sweat naturally removes toxins. Ensure you drink plenty of water afterwards. Grab your Beauty Sleep: While you sleep your body repairs its cells including the skin. Skin cells can be damaged by stress, UV light, dust and pollution causing the skin to become dull, dry and pallid. Lack of good sleep can also lead to dark circles under the eyes and sagging skin. Aim for 7-8 hours a night and reduce your caffeine intake so it isn’t interfering with your sleep. If you find it difficult to go to sleep or stay asleep some excellent products worth checking out include MELISSSA DREAM which contains magnesium, L-Theanine, B Vitamins and Lemon Balm, two tablets one hour before bed time; another product A. VOGEL DORMEASAN contains valerian and hops, 30 drops in a little water 30minutes before bedtime to help you switch off. Sunshine and Fresh Air: Neither of which we will get a lot of over the next couple of months!! So ensure you are taking a good quality VITAMIN D supplement, such as Nature’s Plus, Pharmanord or Viridian; all of which you will find in store. Wishing you all a happy, healthy Christmas! Until Next Time,

Deirdre

TORQUING CARS! MOTORING SNIPPETS ..

Renault has donated seven Kadjar crossovers to the Irish Community Rapid Response (ICRR) vehicle fleet. ICRR is a registered charity founded in 2008 by social entrepreneur John Kearney with the aim of providing professional pre-hospital emergency care directly to the site of emergencies across the country. The Renault donation will help ICRR’s volunteer doctors on the road to give pre-hospital emergency care to those in life-threatening emergencies. The vehicles, valued at €250,000, will double the number of rapid response vehicles in Ireland and will operate in Clare, Dublin, Kilkenny/Waterford, Laois/ Offaly, Mayo and Roscommon. * Continental is urging drivers to turn on their car’s lights during the day. The company’s boss in Ireland, Tom Dennigan, says: “A lot of newer cars come with day-time running lights (DTRLs) as standard. “This means they have lights on once the engine is running, even during daylight time.” But he adds there are significant numbers of older vehicles that do not have DTRLs and is calling on them to drive with dipped headlights all day long. “If motorists take this small step, we believe it would be a huge boost to road safety this Christmas and into the New Year,” he explains. Safe driving to all. * Pat Ryan (pictured) has been appointed managing director for Citroën and DS Automobiles Ireland. * Good to hear: BMW says autonomous cars should not sideline drivers and insists that there will be a steering wheel in all of its cars. It just wouldn’t be a Beemer without a steering wheel now, would it? * Best wishes to all at MSL Ballsbridge Motors who celebrated the grand opening of their newly-refurbished showrooms on the Shelbourne Road on Saturday. STUDY CLAIMS WOMEN STILL FEEL INTIMIDATED BY MOTOR INDUSTRY.

A new international study runs the risk of copper-fastening prejudices about women and the motor industry. It strongly suggests women still feel intimidated and poorly served by those in the business. That follows an analysis of 64,000 online reviews, yielding the blunt verdict that 43 per cent of women just don’t trust car dealerships. But is it really true? Of Irish dealerships especially? I think it is not, by any means, but I don’t have clinical data. The research was carried out by CDK Global (the company provides integrated information technology and digital marketing solutions to the motor industry, among others). It points to how many women said they felt they were “at a disadvantage when looking to buy a car, due to their gender”. So, more than two in five “don’t trust the automotive industry and often describe their experiences very differently to men”. But I still don’t buy it. We’ve moved on from this, surely? Key words kept cropping up in the data: ‘stressed’, ‘overwhelmed’, ‘taken advantage’ and ‘panic’. I think they are hugely strong terms. Instinct and experience tells me they are not reflective of the Irish scene. So is it scaremongering or fact? (Eddie Cunningham , Indo Motoring )

TORQUING CARS! CAR ADVICE WITH HONEST JOHN – YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED WE ARE RUNNING INTO TROUBLE WITH OUR CAR’S ENGINE... APPARENTLY WE ARE NOT DOING LONG ENOUGH JOURNEYS

We have three children, live in Dublin suburbs and most of our driving is short-distance, frequent trips. We bought a Ford Kuga diesel 2012 two years ago and our mechanic says the short journeys may cause trouble to the diesel engine . Apparently we are not doing long enough journeys. What would you recommend? We probably should move to petrol. I’d love an automatic and I did love the height and style of the Kuga. Budget no more than €30,000. T.F . H.J. Reply .... I encourage you to look at the Peugeot 3008-SUV with the 1.2-litre Pure Tech petrol engine. You can get an automatic Active version, but you will have to jostle a bit with the dealer on the price. The same will likely be the case with a 1.4-litre petrol automatic SEAT Ateca in SE trim. If you can find an ex-demo model of either, go that route. I don’t think a smaller SUV will work for you because you need space. The Qashqai 1.2-litre petrol in SV trim with an automatic transmission is keenly priced and you get a lot of kit for €30,000. It’s a great all-rounder. Diesel particulate filters can clog up if insufficient heat is generated to burn off the soot from them, hence your problems with short journeys. I think the SEAT Ateca 1-litre or 1.4 petrol is the best value car for you now.

CIVIC RECEPTION

What is the most reliable, used, petrol automatic I can get for less than £8,000? PT Honda Civic 1.8i VTEC five-speed torque converter auto, Toyota Prius or a Toyota Auris hybrid.

GOLF COARSE

I have a VW Golf 1.4 TSI and there is a growling noise at low speed, or when accelerating. It has been suggested this might be the air intake in the turbo. Is this a possibility and is this a known problem? JB That is most likely to be an air intake noise because a pipe has split or come adrift; not a fault with the turbo itself. But if it’s the timing chain you’re in trouble...

AGE-OLD QUESTION...

I purchased a new Mazda in October 2008. The manual says the timing belt should be changed at 75,000 miles and I have now driven 50,000. Should I should play safe and have it changed fairly soon? DB Play safe. Change the timing belt, water pump, timing belt tensioner and also the alternator belt (which can come off and take off the timing belt at the bottom pulley).

STOPPING DISTANCE

My VW Golf is now 16 years old and has just had its annual service. When I collected it, the mechanic mentioned that the brakes were fine and commented on the front pads being hardly worn. When I told him they were the originals he wouldn’t believe me. MW H.J You live in Guernsey with a 40mph maximum speed limit, so the brakes don’t have to do much work, but that is still remarkable.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL A HAPPY NEW YEAR: Firstly before we get into this week’s column I want to take this opportunity to wish all the readers of the Tralee Advertiser and especially all the readers of this column a Happy Christmas and all the best for 2018. May the New Year bring you and your favourite sporting team everything that you wish for. At this stage we also take a moment to remember all those we have lost over the last 12 months. They will be missed but will always be remembered. We will be back on the first week of January and are always looking for information from sports clubs in Tralee that we don’t already cover. Just get onto your PRO and ask him to send in the notes. Enjoy the final column of 2017 and the second part of our Review of the Year. It only captures a small part of what has taken place in our sporting mad county. A Snap Shot of June to November (December will be reviewed next month): These are just brief highlights of the year and like all look backs on the year are certainly not definitive. Not alone had Kerry success in the main sports the county also enjoyed great results in sports like boxing, cycling, badminton, rugby, rallying and handball etc. Apologies if your favourite sport or sporting moment does not feature but we will certainly rectify this if you want to email me (traleeadvertiser@gmail. com) over the holidays I will give it a mention in our first column in January. JUNE 2017: The England XV game against a Barbarians selection at Twickenham was refereed by former Tralee Rugby Player of the Year (2009) Andy Brice. Scotts Lakers Killarney became the third National Basketball League team in Kerry joining Keanes Killorglin in Division 1 while Garvey’s Tralee Warriors are in the SuperLeague. Eamonn Fitzmaurice named a senior development squad alongside the inter-county side. Tralee Golfer Joseph O’Neill awarded a four year golf

Cillard Camogie Club secured back-to-back All Ireland titles at the John West Feile competition. JULY: Kerry wins Senior and Minor Munster finals to complete a grand slam that also includes the Junior, u21 and U17 titles. The Kerry Ladies add another title to the list as they win decider against Waterford. Kerry soccer accepts invitation to enter a team in the inaugural U15 League of Ireland competition that was to run from August to November. Misty Supreme wins the big race at the 28th Annual Hospital Fundraiser at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium Ballymac’s Ciara Griffin is named on the Irish Women’s Rugby World Cup squad for the tournament that took place in Dublin. The following week Louise Galvin was called in to replace the injured Niamh Briggs. Sadly it was not a great tournament for the Girls in Green. AUGUST: Kerry defeat Galway in a tight encounter as their bid for All Ireland glory goes on. But it ends later in the month as Mayo win 2-16 to 0-17. The manager later agrees to stay on for the next three years. He has added Joe O’Connor and Niall O’Mahony to his back room set up. Austin Stacks Ladies celebrate their Intermediate Ladies County Final win defeating neighbours Na Gaeil. Young Kerry riders Kieran Coggins, Shane Galvin, Patrick Galvin and Tom Moriarty impress on the Errigal Youth Tour, one of the counties biggest underage cycling events. Austin Stacks relegated from the Senior Football League Division 1 winning only one of their 10 games. Kerry athletes bring back a huge haul of medals from the Aldi Community Games Athletics finals at the National Sports Complex in Abbotstown. SEPTEMBER: Kerry minors under coach Peter

Friday 15th December 2017

Keane and led by David Clifford’s outstanding performance win a historic 4-in-a-row of All Ireland titles. Kerry players picked up 8 Minor All Star Awards. Sean Lacey win his third National Cycle Road Race Series adding 2017 to titles won in 2010 and 2016. Jack O’Connor ratified as the Kerry u20 manager in a year that saw many rule changes with the Inter League minor competition moving to u17’s. Kerry clubs vote later to keep the county competitions at u18’s. Tralee golfers come up just short in the AIG Barton Shield semi-final. OCTOBER: Ballyduff retain County Senior Hurling title in another very year for the sport. Rian O’Sullivan continues his rise to the top in soccer as the former Dynamos player, now signed for Brighton, made his Ireland u19 debut. Another Dynamos player Sean Kennedy was on the Irish Victory Shield team. David Cliffored gave Kerry football a boost as he refused overtures from the AFL to play Aussie Rules. Killarney’s Paul Nagle and Kris Meeke won the WRC Rally Catalunya in Spain. Dr Crokes won their 6th County Senior title but would lose their Munster and All Ireland title a few weeks later. Kerins O’Rahillys win huge game against Kilcummin to preserve their Senior Football status. NOVEMBER: There were a number of important changes made to the Club Fixtures at the Forum. Among the changes are the moving of the Senior Football Championship to September. Kerry soccer referee and administrator Siobhan O’Mahony was named as the ISRS Person of the Year. Paul Geaney was named as Kerry’s only male All Star while the Ladies won two –Caroline Kelly and Lorraine Scanlon. Wayne Quillinan has been named as the manager of the Stacks for the coming season. Kerry announces they are to skip thiks years McGrath Cup to concentrate on League preparations.

Ireland lose the International Rules Series. Kerry players Paul Geaney, Peter Crowley and Paul Murphy all featured while Darragh O’Se was on the management team. Cavan’s Gary Kiernan win the Banna Resort Winter Stages Rally. Clanmaurice girls come up just short in All Ireland camogie final replay. It was a good year for Kerry cricket on and off the field ending with David Ramsey being recognised by Munster for his contribution to the sport. Garvey’s Tralee Warriors end the season in contention in the League and in a Cup semi-final. And Kerry great Bryan Sheehan hangs up his Inter County boots but will go down as one of the counties greatest players. As always this is a big day for the Fenit Lifeboat’s fundraising team and they will be on hand while there will be hot drinks ready when you come out of the water. Merry Christmas to all our Readers!

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER before the festivities is on Friday December 22nd and there will be no racing on Tuesday December 26th. There will be racing on Friday December 29th while the first meeting of the New Year will be on Tuesday January 2nd. Coursing: On the coursing front Bedford Rambler was the winner of the Derby Trial Stake at Newcastlewest In the Munster Cup the spoils went to Clare dog Callura Sonic. This week the action moves away from Kerry with the Deise Cup the highlight at the Dungarvan meet. AUTOCROSS COMES TO BALLYBEGGAN: Motorsport fans in Tralee are in for a Christmas treat when the Jimmy Devane Autocorss will take place at the Ballybeggan track on December 30th. This event is run by the Killarney and District Motor Club and was called off during the summer due to the weather. The KDMC and the Kerry Motor Club have now combined to put on the event at a perfect time for the sport as Cork and Limerick will also hold events over that week. ONSIDE – KERRY SOCCER NEWS: Tralee Dynamos missed the chance of progressing in the Munster Junior Cup when they went down to CG Killarney in the 3rd Round. Dynamos have been making good strides and are in a re-building phase and this game, against an in form GC side, might have come a little too soon. In the Oscar Traynor Kerry have go a bye in to the quarter finals following their big win over Limerick. However they have been handed a tough away draw against Sligo/Leitrim with the game to be played in February. In the FAI Youths Cup The Park had a hard fought win over Listowel Celtic in the Last 32 and will now travel to Limerick side Fairview Rangers in the Last 16. They can also progress to the 4th round of the Munster Junior Cup if they can get over Killarney Celtic this Saturday, December 16th, at Mounthawk at 2pm. The winners will be away to Kilfrush Crusaders in the Last 16. Want to be a Referee: There are lots of opportunities for new referees in both the Kerry District League and the Kerry Schoolboys Girls League. If you are interested – and the course is open to male and female referees – the KDL are hosting a Referees Beginners Course on Saturday and Sunday January 13th and 14th at Mounthawk Park. Please contact John Regan on 086 2656605 to book a place with a deposit of e20 required. This course is limited to 15 so please book as soon as you can. TRALEE DYNAMOS NEWS: This Friday, December 15th is the final Academy session at the Tralee IT before the Christmas break. The

young stars will be training on the IT astro turf pitch from 6 to 7pm. The club thanks all the coaches, the parents and the players for their commitment to these sessions and the Academy will resume on Friday January 12th. U-14 Premier: The U-14s suffered defeat to an ever improving Killarney Athletic side at Woodlawn Killarney last Saturday. Despite the brave efforts of Maurice O Connell, Donagh Stevenson, Sam Callinan and Jesse Duggan, we came up short against a very impressive side. Andy Rogers was on hand to score for Dynamos. New Dynamos Schoolboys Kit: The new range of kit (Shorts, socks, Jersey, Half-zip etc ) is available to buy at Hennebrys Sports Shop, Ashe Sreet Tralee at the moment. It would make the ideal Christmas present for the clubs budding young stars. PARK LIFE: Well done to the club’s u14’s who had a big win over Killarney Celtic to progress to the Last 32 of the Skechers National Cup and they will now face a trip to Villa in Waterford. The 12’s went out to Rathkeale. In the senior ranks the Youths had a great win over Listowel Celtic in their FAI Cup. The club is delighted with the response from the girls who have joined the only team in the town to give them the opportunity to play the beautiful game. The club is now looking for ladies who would like to get involved with the team with the possibility of becoming coaches. Director of Coaching Padraig McCannon has all the details so give him a call on 087 2606538. ON THE HARDWOOD: St Brendan’s Basketball Notes: In the Lee Strand u14 Boys Division 2 St Brendan’s won the Tralee derby defeating Imperials 41-25. The first two quarters were very tight with the sides going basket for basket and there was only 2 points between the sides at the half time break. But it was the St Brendan’s boys who pulled away in the third quarter and took a lead they did not relinquish. In other results in another 14 Division 1 game the boys defeated Killarney Cougars 33-30 while in the 12’s Division 1 it was Rathmore that won 30-26. The u16 boys division 1 side had a big 61-47 win over TK Killarney Cougars. The u18 Division 1 side just went down to Team Kerry while the Senior women were defeated by Kenmare Kestrals in Division 2. Cup Semi-Final: If Garvey’s Tralee Warriors defeat UCC Demons in mid-week they will play Black Amber Templeogue in the Hula Hoops Men’s Pat Duffy National Cup semi-final on Saturday January 6th at 8pm. IN THE SQUARE – WHAT’S HAPPING IN THE GAA: KERRY GAA STARS JOIN ‘GAELIC VOICES FOR CHANGE’:

Call Chris or Colette Tel: 066-7126399 or e-mail : traleeadvertiser@gmail.com

A group of over 400 current and former inter-county football, hurling and camogie players including a number from Kerry who are passionate about making a difference have united under the umbrella of ‘Gaelic Voices for Change’. The new player-led social movement is made up of volunteers from the four provinces who have been meeting weekly for the past two months. The group, which is supported by the GPA and WGPA, feel strongly that the GAA is based on community values and that they want to use their voice to support the most vulnerable in society. They have identified the housing and homeless crisis as a priority area to focus on but are also keen to look at areas such as mental health, gambling and racism. This coming Saturday they are holding a solidarity sleep-out’ from 6pm to 6am that is designed to draw attention to the homelessness crisis, raise funds, and call for action. CAMOGIE NEWS: Congratulations to Patrice Diggin who has been selected as Munster Camogie Player of the Year at the Awards in Fota Resort last weekend. This was a big award for Patrice and a first for Kerry. It was good night for the Kerry GAA with David Clifford winning the Munster Minor Footballer of the Year, Killian Spillane taking the u21 Award and James O’Donoghue also getting an Award. Causeway Camogie club: Recently held their AGM, the following officers elected on the night were: Chairman Ernest Hanly, Secretary Ann Kearney, Treasurer Catherine Burke, PRO Teresa Reil O’Connor, and Registrar Gina O’Donoghue. Fundraiser: The Camogie County Board thanks all those who supported their Christmas Draw with the draw taking place tonight Friday night. PARNELL’S NOTES: There was hard luck for the Tralee CBS in the u18.5 Munster Final as they went down to Mount Sion. The Green led 0-08 point to 1-01 but were against the elements in the second half and lost to a last minute free 1-09 to 1-08. The club was happy to see so many of its members on the team and their Junior Minor Manager Mark Ryall who was in charge of the team. The club had a very good year with camogie players from u8’s up with numbers building steadily. The club is also very fortunate to have the calibre of coaches it has working with the young players. BALLYMAC NEWS: There is a great buzz about the club as preparations continue for the 2018 Strictly Come Dancing with rehearsals well underway. The spectacular night’s entertainment takes place on February 3rd in the Ballygarry Hotel with tickets on

Friday 15th December 2017

The club will be bag packing in Garvey’s on Thursday December 21st from 11am to 6pm and volunteers are still needed. Contact the club if you have an hour to spare. The Christmas Party for the u6’s, u8’s and u10’s and their siblings takes place this Saturday from 4 to 6pm in the Playdium. The cost is e8 for 1 child, e15 for 2 and e20 for 3 kids. STACKS STORIES: The clubs underage players were delighted with their Awards nights held in the club over the last few weeks. It was a great reward for the players for all the hard work. They are all looking forward to the new season. The 11th edition of the calendar with photographs of the clubs young stars is now on sale at the usual outlets in Tralee town costing e5. Also for anyone who is or has had any connection with the Austin Stacks club or just has an interests in football then A Centenary History – celebrating the clubs 100 years is also set to go on sale. The club is looking for a quiz team for the Kerry County Scor finals on Thursday January 4th. The club is also looking for other Scor entrants so talk to any committee member for all the details. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: Michael Quirke has finalised his management team for 2018 and he will be joined by Mark Fitzgerald, Timmy O’Sullivan and Pat Flavin with Giles O’Grady overseeing all gym conditioning work. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto jackpot of e10,400 from the numbers drawn 8,15, 21 and 26. Juveniles: The annual Christmas Party will take place this Sunday, December 17th starting at 2pm and all club members are welcome. ON THE GREENS: At the Tralee Golf Club there was big send off for head groundsman JJ Young who has retired after 41 years of service to the club. A sign of the skills of JJ was that he was able to produce perfect conditions on both the parklands course at Mounthawk and then at Barrow when the Tralee Golf Club moved to it links setting. In Castleisland there was only one competition due to the weather with Willie Galvin winning the Seniors 12 Hole singles ahead of John Slattery and John Raggett.

UNFAILING PRAYER TO ST. ANTHONY “Blessed be God in His Angels and in His Saints” O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and Charity for His creatures, made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. Encouraged by this thought, I implore you to obtain for me (request). O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms; and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Amen. N.S.

THANKSGIVING PRAYER Dear God, Thank you for your amazing power and work in our lives, thank you for your goodness and for your blessings over us. Thank you for your great love and care. Thank you for your sacrifice so that we might have freedom and life. Forgive us for when we don’t thank you enough, for who you are, for all that you do, for all that you’ve given. Help us to set our eyes and our hearts on you afresh. Renew our spirits, fill us with your peace and joy. We love you and we need you, this day and every day. We give you praise and thanks, for You alone are worthy! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.” - Debbie McDaniel, Crosswalk.com Contributor N.S.
