€10.6 MILLION AWARDED FOR BUILDING OF 63 KERRY HOUSES – SPRING
Labour TD, Arthur J Spring has confirmed the approval of €10.63 million worth of public house building for Kerry. Deputy Spring states, “ I welcome the announcement by Labour Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government, Alan Kelly that €10.63 million has been approved for the building of an additional 63 housing units in Kerry. Following an announcement in May 2015 which saw €6.3 million allocated for the building of 28 houses, this funding will allow the continuation of the building schemes in The ParkKilllarney and Killeen Tralee which saw the approval of twelve houses in each location previously. Today’s funding awards €1.45 million for the building of an additional 8 social housing units at the Park, Killlarney, €1.1 million for an additional 9 units in Killeen, Tralee. A further four units will be built at Bill Kinnerk Road, Tralee with €730 allocated for this project. Twenty two units have been approved in Kenmare with an allocation of €3.9 million. Ten units will be built both in Listowel and Milltown and funding of €1.5 million and €1.95 million has been allocated respectively. Deputy Spring states “This announcement of €10.63 million for the building of 63 units all over Kerry will create a boost in construction jobs county wide .
ECONOMIC RECOVERY ALLOWS FOR €12,916,782 INVESTMENT IN KERRY ROADS
Minsiter Jimmy Deenihan has today (Tuesday) welcomed the news that €12,916,782 has been allocated to Kerry for road improvement and maintenance works. The funding is part of a €298 million national investment programme for 2016 for regional and local roads. “Kerry is getting a real boost from this significant investment of €12,916,782 in our local and regional roads. The announcement of this funding allocation today by Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe, allows Kerry County Council to plan its work programme for the year. “Projects to receive funding include: Cluainin Development, Listowel; Dromevame, Kenmare; Killerisk ; Listry Bridge Milltown; Convent Cross on the R553 ; Railway road Kenmare.; Knockananore Ballyduff; Dingle Inner Relief Road Phase 4; Listry Bridge; Gearhameen Bridge; Tulla More 1 bridge; Tulla More 2 bridge. “The funding package will allow approximately 2,000 kilometres of regional and local roads to be maintained nationally and close to 2,000 kilometres strengthened this year. “It is thanks to our recovering economy that we can make these kinds of investments in our road network which is a hugely important. It is good for tourism, increases efficiencies for businesses and benefits the local people who use the roads on a daily basis. “Fine Gael has a long term economic plan designed to keep the recovery going which will ensure we can continue to make these kinds of investments. The plan has three steps: more and better jobs, making work pay more than welfare, and investment in better public services, which will only be possible as a result of the increased revenue generated by creating more jobs. This plan will ensure that more people feel the benefits of a recovering economy in their own lives.”
WHICH GOVERNMENT SCHEME WILL SUPPORT YOUR FAMILY NEEDS AND THE NEEDS OF YOUR LITTLE ONE BEST?
Parents may justifiably be confused by the myriad of “FREE” Government Schemes currently on offer for their child. It is worth exploring the supports available to lift the economic barriers for many parents returning to work or availing of upskilling opportunities as well as the FREE Pre-school Scheme. High quality care is key for your little one and quality programs promote fun, learning and development through the Aistear Curriculum Framework and the Síolta Quality Principles. ECCE: Arguably the most widely known is the Early Childhood Care and Education Scheme, which is the universal free pre-school place available in the two year before your child commences Primary School. Children must reach 3 years old in the year that they wish to avail of their ECCE place. From September 2016, the ECCE scheme will be extended to children aged between 3 years and 5 years 6 months, or until they start primary school. This increases the number of weeks available on the ECCE scheme. Children will be able to enroll in pre-school at 3 different points in the year (September, January and April) in order to access the scheme ASCC: Lesser known is the After-school Child Care Scheme which provides support to parents returning to work following specific periods of Social Welfare Payments and is also for low paid employees who may be increasing their hours at work. This is payable for 52 weeks during the transition period. It is available for school going children and provides for their FREE school pick up and after school care and includes ten weeks of full-time care during school holidays. CEC: A recent initiative for Parents engaged on Community Employment Schemes provides19.5 hours FREE childcare. This applies to both younger nursery/pre-school children and also after-school care with pick up for older children. TEC: Formerly CETS, The Training and Education Childcare Scheme, provides FREE Full-time and After-school Club with collection ,to children of participants on training and education opportunities, through Kerry ETB, VTOS, and the National Learning Network. This is available for children aged 0-12 years. Government Approved, HSE Registered Centres such as Mounthawk Montessori School & Busy Bees Nursery & After-schools and Maureen’s Childcare Centre base the Pre-planned Program of care on research based knowledge. The physical environment of the prepared environment of the Montessori Classroom as well as the outdoor learning areas, support and promote self- directed learning , encouraging children to be independent confident, and explorers seeking out new knowledge, aiding their developing concentration and self-esteem. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... KERRY IMPRESSES AS STUDENT RECOGNISED AS ONE OF IRELAND’S BEST YOUNG ARTISTS Lauren Tuite from St. Brendan’s National School in Fenit, County Kerry has been recognised as one of Ireland’s best young painters for her entry to the Sightsavers Junior Painters of the Year Awards 2016. Lauren’s painting entitled ‘Nobody’s Homeless’ was inspired by this year’s theme ‘Imagine 2030’ and is a winner of the Highly Commended Certificate in the 5th/6th class category. Competition was as tough as ever with thousands of children from over 200 primary schools across the country entering this hugely popular annual art competition. The Sightsavers Junior Painter of the Year Awards is designed to inspire Irish children to express their artistic talent through painting whilst developing an appreciation of the importance and value of their sight. The nationwide competition, which was open to primary school students of all ages, has grown over the last seven years, and the 2016 competition has been highly contested with thousands of entries. Through the competition, children learned about Sightsavers’ important work in preventing avoidable blindness and restoring sight for millions in the developing world. Drawing inspiration from this year’s theme, ‘Imagine 2030’, which asked students to create an artwork that shows how they think the world they live in will look in the year 2030, there was a high level of sophistication in the entries. Even the infant classes painted their future homes, showing how much thought the children put in to their work. The Queen of Shops herself, Mary Portas, claims 86% of women have at least one item in their wardrobe that they’ve never worn and will never ever wear which is a pretty bold statement to say the least. I decided to see for myself and set about raiding my wardrobes. Much to my horror I managed to fill two black bags of clothes and shoes that I had never worn and, truth be told, had no intention of wearing in the future. These clothes and shoes are now residing at 321 waiting to be sorted, tagged, steamed and put onto the shop floor where at least I know they’ll be put to good use! How did I managed to accumulate so many clothes and not wear them? These days we tend to buy fast, cheap and in large quantity so when something doesn’t fit properly or we decide we just don’t fancy it, we don’t bother returning it to the shop because it was so cheap in the first place – it’s all about fast fashion! So ladies, how about it? Have a rummage in your wardrobe and see if you can find that item (or in my case items!) and donate it to 321 where it can really help make a difference to a great cause! We have a beautiful selection of party dresses and evening wear at the moment as well as some lovely day wear. I picked up this shirt dress from New Look for €6 and a gorgeous vintage Marks & Spencer leather bag for €5 – pop in and say hello, we’re straight across from the Kerry School of Music, you never know what you might find! We’d also like to say a massive thank you this week to those who donated their 1c and 2c coins – we can’t thank you enough!

TECHNOLOGY CORNER with Billy O Meara (HRI Services)
Billy simplifies and explains Todays Technology
I have a Windows 7 PC. Should I update to Windows 10?
Microsoft are giving a free upgrade to Windows 10 to desktops and laptops that are running Windows 7 or windows 8. This will run out in July and then you will have to pay for the upgrade. I would always suggest that you upgrade while it is free because this will make your device more secure. Before you make any changes to your device it is good practice to backup your data just in case it goes wrong.
What is the best way to pay for goods online?
Nowadays you can pay for goods online by using your credit card or debt card but it is difficult to choose which is the safest. I would always suggest that you register with PayPal because the sellers of the goods will not see your card details. You can also use a top up card which you can be got in the post office such as 3Ireland. The 3rd option is your credit card but before you do this, check out the website by using google just to see if anyone had any bad experience. Do not use your Debt card because this is directly linked your bank account and if your card details get stolen you could be left with nothing in your bank account , if it is not spotted in time by you or your bank.

Question
A friend of mine was very seriously assaulted but has been told that the person who was arrested will not be prosecuted. Can she find out the reason for this?
Answer
Yes she can. Since 16 November 2015, if the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) decides not to prosecute, the victim can ask the DPP for a summary of the reasons for the decision not to prosecute. In a fatal case a family member of the victim can ask. If the decision not to prosecute was made by the Gardaí, you must ask the Gardaí for a summary of the reasons for the decision. To request a summary of the reasons for the decision by the DPP not to prosecute you must send a Request for a Summary of Reasons form to the: Communications and Victims Liaison Unit, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Infirmary Road, Dublin 7 The form is available on dppireland.ie or from your local Garda station. You must send your request for reasons within 28 days of the date you are told of the decision not to prosecute. In some cases the DPP might extend this time limit. If you are not satisfied, you can request a review of a decision. The review will be carried out by a lawyer who was not involved in making the original decision. If you have already requested a summary of the reasons for the decision, you must make your request for a review within 28 days of the date on the letter telling you of the reasons. If you have not asked for the reasons for the decision, you must make your request for a review within 56 days (8 weeks) of the date you are told of the decision not to prosecute. To request a review of the DPP’s decision, you should write to the Communications and Victims Liaison Unit.

DELIGHTED WITH THE RESULTS
"Thrilled with the results I got from a course of hair removal at The Sanctua ry - great advice and service as always”
!
Mary, Ardfert
The Sanctuary Clinic, No. 3 The Square, Tralee, Co. Kerry.
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions answered by Aileen Q. How many treatments am I likely to need?
Aileen; For the best results we recommend a course of 6- 8 Laser Hair Removal Treatments with a gap of between 4 and 6 weeks between each appointment. This is because the hair growth cycle occurs in three stages: growing, resting and transitional and a hair can only be targeted by the laser if it is in the growing stage, so not all hairs can be targeted in a single treatment. Your practitioner will advise you at your consultation the best course for you to achieve optimum results.
However naturally darker skin tones may be treated as the melanin is evenly distributed and once the Laser therapist is happy that the Ellipse laser machine can be adjusted to the correct setting for the client a treated is then possible. This is one of the main reasons that consultation and patch testing is compulsory at the Sanctuary Clinic for all Laser treatments.
Q Why should I choose Laser hair removal over IPL?
Aileen; After the initial course is completed, extra treatments may be necessary depending on the volume and strength of the hair growth however, going forward for the majority of clients a maintenance treatment once or twice a year is sufficient until such time as the hair stops re- growing
Aileen : While it is sometimes thought that these treatments are the same, there are significant advantages to Laser such as (1) Laser technology is much more effective as they are more precise and can selectively target dark, coarse hairs while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged. (2)Laser settings can be adjusted to suit a clients specific skin tone and hair colour (3)Most clients will see a significant improvement after 3-5 Laser treatments whereas IPL takes considerably longer to make an impact on a similar area
Q. How do I manage my hair growth in between treatments?
Q. What results can I expect from a course of Laser Removal at The Sanctuary Clinic
Q. Once Ive completed a course of laser hair removal, how do I manage my hair growth in the future?
Aileen: You can shave the hairs in the area if necessary in between treatments however waxing or plucking is not recommended as it interferes with the root of the hair and can impact on the success rate of your course of treatment.
Aileen: While some patients do tell us they see a noticeable difference after their first treatment we would suggest that you’ll see real results around your third treatment. We start on a lower setting and increase this as you progress through your course to ensure your skin doesn’t react to the laser and that Q. Is Laser Hair Removal Painful? the experience is comfortable for you while still being effective, Aileen: We advise patients that they may feel some discomfort during this may mean you results are slower to start with but with improve their treatment. However many patients report the It’s natural that hair will continue to grow on your body, though treatment to be much more comfortable than they had expected significantly reduced following a treatment course, The Sanctuary and those who have waxed previously often say the pain level is Clinic has maintenance packages available for any top-ups you more tolerable. require. Bexblah Fitness! HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK!
I hope my last week’s page was helpful to at least one of you. If you missed it you can now read The Tralee Advertiser online at www.TheTraleeAdvertiser.ie. Since last week I have been eating so much better and feeling better in turn, I use the app My Fitness Pal to track my food intake, because I like to focus on more than just calories and I like knowing what’s in my food. This is what one of my days last week looked like…
DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT A NUTRITIONIST, AND I AM NOT TELLING YOU HOW MANY CALORIES/ WHAT TO EAT. When you use my fitness pal it gives you different goals depending on your age, weight, height, activity level and so on. I just find it handy to use to stay on track and be more mindful of what I put into my body.
WORKING OUT
I know not everyone is a fan of going to the gym and lifting weights, it takes time to learn to love it! If you want to be healthy and maybe tone up or lose weight, here are some alternatives to going to the gym to do your own workout… Swimming: Have you seen swimmers bodies? If you want to tone and improve your cardiovascular health swimming is a good fun way to get a workout in. Spinning: Definitely a way to sweat and up your endurance on a bike. I honestly thought I would NEVER like spinning but I love the rush, the music, the sweating and the 45 minute class goes so fast! Your bum might be sore after the first session or two but you get used to it after that, promise! Zumba: Nothing says fun like a good Zumba class! Another great exercise that helps burn calories and get your fitness levels up. Walking: If you really don’t like working out, just walk. Walk wherever you can, if you have a dog walk it, now that the evenings are getting that bit brighter you’ve no excuse!

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2016 I have had a few emails about a nice warming winter fish dish, giving the weather at the moment. Something not as heavy as a beef stew so here is a classic. French fish stew lovely and warming but much lighter. There is a bit of work in this but it is oh so worth it.
Bouillabaisse ROUILLE • • • • • • •
1 baking potato (8 ounces), peeled and cut into 1-inch dice 2 large egg yolks 2 large garlic cloves, chopped 1/2 roasted red pepper 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon harissa 3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil Salt
PREPARATION: 1.
INGREDIENTS BROTH • • • • • • • • • • • • •
1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil 8 shallots, coarsely chopped 2 leeks, white and tender green parts, coarsely chopped 1 medium fennel bulb, cored and coarsely chopped 1 head of garlic, cloves peeled and coarsely chopped 1 teaspoon tightly packed saffron 3 large tomatoes, coarsely chopped 2 tablespoons tomato paste 2 pounds non-oily white fish bones and heads 4 thyme sprigs 4 parsley sprigs 2 bay leaves Salt and freshly ground pepper
2. 3.
4.
SOUP • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 leek, white and tender green parts, finely diced 1/2 medium fennel bulb, cored and cut into 1/2-inch dice 1 baking potato, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch dice 1 large tomato—peeled, seeded and cut into 1/2-inch dice 12 clams, scrubbed and rinsed 16 mussels, debearded 8 large shrimp (1/2 pound), shelled and deveined 1 1/2 pounds monkfish fillets, cut into 2-inch chunks 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 3 tablespoons chopped basil 8 thin slices of baguette, brushed with olive oil and toasted Lemon wedges, for serving
5.
In a large pot, heat the olive oil. Add the shallots, leeks, fennel and garlic and cook over moderate heat until softened, about 8 minutes. Add the saffron and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add the tomatoes and tomato paste and cook over moderately high heat, stirring, for 2 minutes. Add the fish bones and heads, 3 pints of water, the thyme, parsley and bay leaves and bring to a boil. Simmer over moderately low heat for 45 minutes Strain the broth and discard the solids. Return the broth to the pot and boil over high heat until it is reduced to , about half 20 minutes. Season the broth with salt and pepper. In a small saucepan of boiling, salted water, cook the potato until tender, about 7 minutes. Drain well and transfer to a food processor. With the machine on, add the egg yolks, chopped garlic, red pepper and harissa and process to a puree. With the machine on, add the olive oil and process very briefly until it’s just incorporated. Scrape the rouille into a bowl and season with salt. Cover and refrigerate. In a large pot, heat the olive oil. Add the garlic, leek and fennel and cook over moderately low heat, stirring occasionally, until tender, about 8 minutes. Add the potato and cook until just tender, about 5 minutes. Add the tomato and cook, stirring, for 3 minutes. Stir in the broth and bring to a boil. Add the clams and cook over moderate heat until they start to open. Add the mussels, shrimp and fish and simmer until all of the seafood is just cooked, about 4 minutes. Stir in the lemon juice and basil; season with salt and pepper. Spread the baguette toasts with some of the rouille. Spoon the bouillabaisse into 4 large, shallow bowls and serve with the toasts and lemon wedges. Pass the remaining rouille at the table.

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! CLEAN SHAVE An old drover walks into a barber shop in Black Stump Crossing, NT, Aussie, for a shave and a haircut. He tells the barber he can’t get all his whiskers off because his cheeks are wrinkled from age. The barber gets a little wooden ball from a cup on the shelf and tells the old drover to put it inside his cheek to spread out the skin. When he’s finished, the old drover tells the barber that was the cleanest shave he’d had in yonks, but he wanted to know what would have happened if he had accidentally swallowed that little ball. The barber replied, “Just bring it back in a couple of days like everyone else does.”
DEAR ABBEY
Dear Abbey My husband hasn’t worked in 14 years. All he does is get dressed in the morning and hop in his fancy car to visit his cronies. He’s cheated on me many times with young girls who could be his grand daughters. I know because he brags about it. He smokes fancy cigars and drinks expensive Champagne day and night. We sleep in separate beds because he says I’M not attracted to him and my varicose veins and ugly face turn him off! Should I clobber him with my frying pan, or should I leave him Abbey? Your advice will be appreciated, Mad as Hell Dear Mad as Hell, You dont have to take that kind of treatment from any man. I suggest you pack your bags and move out a.s.a.p.! Dont resort to clobbering him with the frying pan, and try to act like a lady! Remember ....... you`re running for President of the United States, so try acting like it! Abbey
WOMAN GETS HOME EARLY AND CATCHES HER HUSBAND CHEATING...
A wife came home early…and found her husband upstairs with a very attractive young woman and was somewhat upset. ‘You are a disrespectful pig!’ she cried. ‘How dare you do this to me a faithful wife, the mother of your children. I’m leaving you. I want a divorce straight away.’ And the husband replied ‘Hang

on just a minute love, so at least I can tell you what happened.’ ‘Fine, go ahead,’ she sobbed, ‘ but they’ll be the last words you’ll say to me!! And the husband began – ‘Well, I was getting into the car to drive home and this young lady here asked me for a lift. She looked so down and out and defenseless that I took pity on her and let her into the car. I noticed that she was very thin, not well dressed and very dirty. She told me that she hadn’t eaten for three days! So, in my compassion, I brought her home and warmed up the enchiladas I made for you last night, the ones you wouldn’t eat because you’re afraid you’ll put on weight. The poor thing devoured them in moments. Since she needed a good clean up I suggested a shower, and while she was doing that I noticed her clothes were dirty and full of holes so I threw them away. Then, as she needed clothes, I gave her the designer jeans that you have had for a few years, but don’t use because you say they are too tight. I also gave her the underwear that was your anniversary present, which you don’t use because I don’t have good taste. I found the sexy blouse my sister gave you for Christmas that you don’t use just to annoy her, and I also donated those boots you bought at the expensive boutique and don’t use because someone at work has a pair the same.’ The husband took a quick breath and continued -‘She was so grateful for my understanding and help and as I walked her to the door she turned to me with tears in her eyes and said, ‘ Please do you have anything else that your wife doesn’t use?’

BRICKS N’ MORTAR... KILLARNEY LANDBANK FOR €520,000
A 13.5-acre landbank on the edge of Killarney in Co Kerry is on the market through agent Daniel Fleming Auctioneers for €520,000. The land holding, with extensive road frontage to the Killarney bypass and great views over the tourist town, has a mixed-use zoning which permits a wide range of possible uses. These include offices, education, bank, car park, crèche, community hall, conference centre, cultural/recreational building, data centre, enterprise centre, funeral home, GP practice, hair dressing salon, hotel, place of public worship and pub/ restaurant. The site is surrounded by mature trees and slopes in a southerly direction. It is within walking distance of the Deerpark shopping complex, Department of Justice offices, the local fire station and the proposed new headquarters of the Department of Arts, Sports & Tourism. The site once formed part of Killarney’s first golf course built some 200 years ago. Msgr Hugh O’Flaherty, who helped more than 6,500 prisoners escape imprisonment and probable death at the hands of the Nazis in the second World War, learned his golf on the site. His life was celebrated in a recent book, The Vatican Pimpernel by Brian Fleming and in film, Gregory Peck’sThe Scarlet & The Black.
INTEREST HIGH IN DUBLIN RETAIL EXPO
More than 600 representatives from leading Irish and UK retail firms are due to attend the Completely Retail & Leisure Marketplace Ireland exhibition on February 23rd at The Printworks, Dublin Castle. The delegates, with an interest in establishing or expanding their presence in Ireland, have been attracted to the event by the recovery in Ireland’s retail economy over the past two years. Retailers due to attend include Eason, Home Retail Group, Omniplex Cinemas, Insomnia, H&M and Homestore & More. Savills is one of the event’s core sponsors and its head of commercial, Larry Brennan, says that Ireland’s economic recovery is having a positive knock-on effect on the retail sector. “Strong employment growth is positively influencing consumer sentiment, which is now at a 10-year high, and retail sales are continuing on an upward trajectory. Consequently, demand for retail space on prime high streets and shopping centres remains high.”
MORE THAN €6 MILLION PAID IN MUNSTER HOTEL SALES
Munster hotel sales are early out of the traps for 2016, with more than €6 million paid in all for three well-known entities. New owners are now getting behind the reins at the Commons Inn in Cork city, just bought by expanding hotel operators Great National Asset Management for well over €2 million. Also sold was the Derrynane Hotel in Kerry, bought by Chinese investors with Irish hotel partners for over €1.8 million, and the Cashel Palace in Tipperary, now confirmed as purchased by Coolmore Stud’s John Magnier, as indicated in these pages last October when the historic building went sale-agreed. Very strong interest was shown in the three-star Commons Inn Hotel, on eight acres in Cork city by the Mallow/Limerick Road, especially given its scope for further site development. t has been bought by Great National (GN) Asset Management, which is headed by entrepreneurial hotel expert David Byrne whose 2011-founded group now has 20 Irish and UK hotels in its ownership or management. The group bought Limerick’s South Court Hotel last September. Also confirmed as sold for receivers Grant Thornton, meanwhile, by agents CBRE is the 68-bed Derrynane Hotel with eight holiday homes on the Ring of Kerry, jointly with Killarney agent Tom Spillane Derrynane is set to get a considerable upgrade from its Chinese/ Irish consortium buyers before reopening, said John Ryan of CBRE, who declined to confirm reports it made over €1.8 million 30

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE...
GARVEYS FITCREW OFF TO A FLYING START Lots of exercise, great fun and healthy eating are the order of the day at Garveys Supervalu Tralee where customers, staff and friends have begun a fantastic new programme of fitness in association with Operation Transformation. Aptly named ‘Garvey’s FitCrew’, they have planned out a series of walks/runs around the town over an 8-week period. This wonderful initiative takes place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6.30pm and on Sundays at 1pm. Each week, different routes are planned in order to meet the fitness levels of every individual. Participants have completed the designated routes by walking, jogging & sprinting. According to assistant manager, Tim Moynihan, who is the group leader, the walks/runs are “gathering great momentum since it began with numbers constantly increasing”. Tim has volunteered to disclose his weight loss once a week. A progress board in store monitors Tim’s success & displays many pictures of the group’s efforts throughout the weeks. The store provides Operation Transformation weekly recipes from week 1 to week 8. All of the ingredients for these recipes can be found throughout the store. As an incentive to keep everyone motivated, Garveys are delighted to enter participants each Thursday into a weekly draw to win the ingredients for one of these healthy recipes. New participants are welcome to join this free programme at any stage. Free refreshments are available on the night. Anyone who wishes to find out more information should contact Helen or Sinead on 0667122475 or follow the events on Instagram@Garveys_fitcrew #garveysfitcrew
DID YOU KNOW THAT 27 PEOPLE DIE OF HEART ATTACK IN IRELAND EVERY DAY?
The BPro Cardio Pulse-Wave screening shows you the condition of your heart and the flexibility of your arteries. The procedure is non-invasive and completely pain-free. The cost of an individual BPro test is €50 and although we allocate 45 minutes to all our clients, the actual procedure takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. You will get a full printout of your condition, which can be given to your doctor or medical advisor. What is BPro Screening? If we cut off the Oxygen to the cells in our Heart...The Heart Muscles will begin to die, stimulating a Heart Attack. If Oxygen is cut off to the Brain....the Brain cells will be starved, triggering a stroke. Until recently the only way to test the condition of the arteries and to measure the arterial blood pressure was by an invasive procedure called an angiogram. Recently a new method was developed called BPro and it is faster, noninvasive, equally as accurate (99.17%) and a fraction of the cost. The BPro machine is a completely mobile test kit, comprising of a wrist sensor and a laptop. It can be brought to any location, including your home, organization or workplace. The BPro Cardio Pulse-Wave device offers the most advanced technology in the cardio screening market. It can instantly and accurately measure the health of the cardiovascular system. Cardio Pulse Wave Analyzer, BPro and A-Pulse CASP Software have been approved as a Class II Medical Device to evaluate the status/age of cardiovascular systems by the following agencies: FDA Approved (USA) CE Mark (Europe) BHS (British Hypertension Society) NHS (UK) In addition, BPro has been validated independently by the National Heart Centre of Singapore in compliance with protocols set by the Association of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) and European Society of Hypertension (ESH). Heartfelt Cardio Screening is a small family run partnership based in Co Tipperary. Anna has completed the UK based, Health Stats PWA Training for Clinical Operators Course and is a fully qualified Technician. Jimmy is an agent for Synergy products in Ireland and can advise on the use of all three products i.e. Pro Argi9, Mystify and Phytolife. Jimmy will make himself available for consultation after each screening session should the client wish to learn more about these fantastic products. For further information or to make an appointment, please contact: Anna on 086 413 5555 or Jimmy on 0862 566 422

TORQUING CARS! HIGHLIGHTS FROM DETROIT MOTOR SHOW 2016 Ford Pass Scheme
When Jac Nasser ruled the roost at Ford in the Nineties, they said he was only interested in Ford customers after they’d bought the cars and were in the market for products and services. Now Ford is planning on courting not just its own customers, but owners of car from other brands – and even people who don’t own a car at all. Ford Pass is a sort of online and telephone mobility services company with its own hubs, one of which opens in London soon. These will be like Apple shops, where people can see and touch Ford cars and join the Ford Pass scheme, but they won’t actually sell cars. At first, the scheme will be very much tied up with parking, with tie-ups with some large US airport parking firms, but eventually it will act as a hub for car sharing and car-lease schemes as well as providing travel guidance via call centres. The scheme is the result of an 18-month study of customer behaviour and needs commissioned by Ford and aims to provide one central contact point where a variety of travel and mobility options can be accessed. If you look at the automotive business, it’s worth about $2.3 trillion a year and we’ve got about six per cent of it,” said Mark Fields, Ford chief executive. “If you look at the transportation and mobility business, it’s worth about $5.4 trillion and we’ve got almost none of it. We are aiming to become a serious player in mobility services.” Initially, the revenue will be low and mainly from interests in the parking side of the business, but Steve Odell, part architect of the scheme, says that will grow over time as more services join. On the subject of acquisitions (Nasser was criticised for buying Kwik Fit and Hertz Car Rentals), Bill Ford wasn’t sure. “As far as acquisitions and partnerships are concerned, we just don’t know at the moment,” he said. “My guess is that it would eventually involve some or all of that.” Ford (the company, not the man) also announced that it is to start testing its autonomous Mondeo test fleet in the snow, which is generally considered to be one of the toughest daytime tests you can make with a self-driving car. We’re hoping to be reporting on this in more detail in the near future.
Audi
After producing some truly daft fuel-cell concepts in the last few years,Audi is bouncing in with a series of hydrogen vehicles which not only look good, but also highly buildable. The H-tron which debuted at Detroit is just one, although you might not like its banana yellow paint. It’s 110kW fuel cell is augmented by a 100kW lithium-ion battery, which gives a total range of 372 miles, with refills taking just four minutes. There are two electric motors, a 90kW unit in the front and a 140kW unit in the rear, and the 0-62mph acceleration time is quoted at under seven seconds. The H-tron also introduced the world’s largest solar generating roof, which adds 320kW on a sunny day, worth an estimated 1,000km a year. Look past the powertrain, and the H-tron is essentially the Q6 SUV, which we’ve seen previously in battery-electric form. That version is slated for production in 2018 and no one at Audi would deny that the H-tron could be in line for production at the same time. Elsewhere on its stand, Audi showed off the new, second-generation A4 Allroad, the beefedup 4x4 version of its A4 Avant estate. America gets a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine, but when it arrives in the UK and Ireland this summer /Autumn ..we’ll be offered mainly 2.0-litre diesels.
BMW
BMW pulled the wraps off the mighty new M2 in front of a large audience of journalists and what are now known as “digital influencers”, but it wasn’t all snappers and hacks in the crowd. Also present, was Tomas Moers, the man in charge of Mercedes-Benz’s AMG brand, Uli Eichhorn, VW’s new director of research and development, and Marc Lichte, Audi’s chief designer. It’s easy to see why they were interested, too. This new flagship version of BMWs 2-series coupé looks fantastic and has a turbocharged 3.0-litre engine good for 364bhp. The big question for me, though, given that this car’s less powerful sister, the M235i, offers a nearperfect blend of power and poise, is whether more is indeed more, or less.

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR TALLAGHT CALLING FOR ST BRENDAN’S: Kerry has a long love affair with the finals weekend at the National Basketball Arena and this year St Brendan’s Tralee will be flying the flag for the Kingdom. The have been very impressive all season and their run to the Cup final has seen them enjoy wins over Shannon Jets, Portlaoise Panthers, Phoenix of Belfast in a very impressive away win and then a hard fought win over Cork Celts in the semi-final. St Brendan’s won 68-57 to reach the decider while their opponents BC Leixlip Nemunas saw off UCD Marian 74-60. The Leixlip side are a big strong physical side and are made up of formers of Ballon basketball club with a number of Eastern European players on their team. For St Brendan’s they have a number of very experienced players led by Kieran Donaghy and have enjoyed a wide spread of scorers is all their games. Players like Fergal and Darren O’Sullivan, Mike O’Donnell and Paul McMahon have been hitting bog numbers and will lead the way on the court. But any of the players on the bench can do a job and this sets St Brendan’s up well for the final. Chairman Pa Carey recognizes the importance of this game to the club and the town. “It is vital that Tralee and Kerry are always represented at the finals and we are delighted to be the one this year. There is a great buzz around the club and we will have plenty of support in the Arena come 12 noon on Saturday. Basketball has been a very important part of Tralee’s sporting landscape for many years and we hope to have another National Trophy to display when we get back to town.” The club is hoping that as many as possible travel to the game and a supporters bus will leave Moyderwell at 7am on Saturday and will cost only e15 return. Bookings are to be made on 085 1188533. The club would also like to thank its sponsors The Castle Bar, Paddy Powers and K9 Cabs whose support has been invaluable during the cup run. Ladies County League Division 2: In the Ladies County League Division 2 St Brendan’s defeated HHS Lixnaw 59-39. The game was tight in the opening quarter with the Tralee side only up by 2 16-14 after the opening 10 minutes. Good performances by Laura Griffin and Eimear Galvin saw St Brendan’s pull ahead at the half 24-18 and the pulled away in the second half. Sarah Carey was the top scorer on 18 points followed by Claire O’Sullivan on 16 and Carmel Roche with 7. Boys u16 Division 3: St Brendan’s enjoyed a 39-31 home win in a game that saw the Tralee boys ahead by 6 at the break. A run of 6 unanswered points from Steph Curry and Dylan McHugh in the third quarter put St Brendan’s in the driving seat and while St Anne’s battled to the end they could not close the gap.

Boys u14 Division 3 Pool A: St Anne’s led 12-7 in this game at the break and kept their lead through the final two quarters despite the best efforts of the Tralee boys. Late baskets from Sam McCarthy and Garry Lynch were not enough to close the gap. The team will now concentrate on the Division 3 Plate. Garry Lynch on 8 was the top scorers followed by Graham Sheehy on 7, Sam McCarthy on 4 and Daniel Bowler with 3. Boys U12 Division 1: St Brendan’s defeated St Bridget’s 31-23 in a game that saw the visitors lose their unbeaten record. The defense was the key to the win while on offence the Tralee side were able to get vital scores at the right times to secure the win. Andrew Wallace hit 10 and Edward Sheehy had 9 points. St Brendan’s hosted an u10 Blitz last weekend and welcomed teams from St Joseph’s Kenmare, St Bridgets and Ballybunion to Tralee for a very enjoyable day of basketball. Other Results: In the Boys u16 Division 1 St Brendan’s defeated Imperials 47-46 in a cracker while in 16’s Division 3 it finished St Brendan’s 27 TK Vixens 41. GARVEY’S GO DOWN IN LOCAL DERBY: A poor start saw Team Garvey’s always chasing the game against local rivals Team Den Joes American Style. To be fair to Garvey’s they are in transition following the return of Mark Bernsen to the US after flooding damaged his home there and Liam Culloty has taken over. Castleisland were 14-2 up at the end of the first quarter but a great display from Sinead Mackessy in the second quarter saw them close the gap, driven on by Rheanne O’Shea who was excellent all night. However the Castleisland side were able to hit important scores to lead 29-17 at the half. Deridre Geaney was also coming into her own and midway into the third quarter the gap was down to 6 after a Casandra Buckley three pointer. But Eileen O’Connor hit straight back for Den Joes with a three of her own and when Geaney was fouled out the Tralee side were not able to keep up the required pressure and went down by 18 in the end. Both sides are still in a good position to make the play-offs. HISTORIC NIGHT AT THE KDL: There was a great sense of occasion at the Kerry District League headquarters in Mounthawk when the 20 players chosen to represent Kerry in the SSE U17 League of Ireland signed on the dotted line. The players were accompanied by parents and family members with Chairman Sean O’Keffee and Secretary John O’Regan, PRO Tommy Naughton and Administration Officer Geraldine Nagle representing the League. Kerry u17 manager Brendan Hogan and assistant Danny Diggins were also present and Brendan paid tribute to the players who made the squad. “Over 60 players attended a comprehensive 4
Friday 29th January 2016
night trial process and the KDL and the Kerry Schoolboys Girls League is delighted that such numbers expressed an interest in playing for the county at u17 level. “It was a tough process to select the final 20 and we are delighted with the quality we have on board. We all know that the hard work starts now and we will be training 2 nights a week as well as monitoring the players fitness and core strengths. We aim to have the squad prepared to the highest standards in time for our first game in 6 week’s.” KDL Chairman Sean O’Keffee also congratulated the players and said he hoped that the whole county would get behind the team. He also said that it will cost between e30,000 and e40,000 for the 22 game League campaign plus Cup games. Anyone interested in getting involved in sponsoring the team should contact the League while individuals can buy a Yearly KDL Lotto ticket for e50 which will also help with the fundraising. The Kerry u17 Squad: Martin Coughlin, Shaagh O’Connor -Kerry ETP Brian Lonergan and Ben Cooney – Castleisland Dylan Fitzgerald – Killarney Athletic Robert Osbourne and Thando Dube – Killarney Celtic Conor Standen and Dylan O’Sullivan – Killorglin Darren Loughnane, Niall Downey and Sheldon O’Neill – Listowel Celtic Michael O’Gara, Sean Carmody, Thomas Burke and Blake Bolster – St Brendan’s Park David O’Connor, Kevin Williams, Dillon Robinson and Gearoid Dillane – Tralee Dynamos. New era in Kerry soccer: The entry of Kerry into the SSE U17 League is a hugely exciting step forward for Kerry soccer. It sees the Kerry Schoolboys Girls League and the KDL working together and will mean that there is the continued pathway from one to the other to the top echelon of the game. It was the case for many players that the Kennedy Cup was the aim up to 14 years of age and after that it was the Kerry minors. Now, while some players will still go down that road, players now will have a decision to make as the Kerry soccer 15’s and 16’s ETP and Inter League teams will be feeders into the 17’s League of Ireland. Players in the SSE League Of Ireland team will be playing against the top clubs and at some of the top venues around the country and this will open other doors. Hopefully in two years Kerry will also have an u19 team and from here players could go onto University or get signed on by League of Ireland clubs. But that is for the future. Now the soccer public is looking forward to the u17 fixtures and that historic first home game. PARK GO TO LIMERICK: St Brendan’s Park are the only Kerry side left in the FAI Youths Cup and in the Last 16 they travel to Limerick to face Regional United. The following were elected: President PJ Costello, Chairman Michael Slattery, Secretary Cathy Fisher, Treasurer Denis Cronin, Safety Officer John Edwards and PRO Kevin Williams. There was a good discussion on a number of topics including a new timing system which the meeting decided not to purchase but to tighten up the finish lines. Winter Swimming: The winter swimming season continued last Sunday with nearly 30 swimmers taking to the water. The water temperature was up 2 degrees from last Sunday with the warm air making it a very comfortable for all the swimmers. Teas, coffees, hot chocolates and cakes were much appreciated by the swimmers who on average spent 10 to 15 minutes in the water. The build -up to the big Easter draw get underway this Sunday. TRALEE CLUB ROWING TO SUCCESS: Two members of Tralee rowing club enjoyed great success at the weekend. Lara Flynn was on the podium after winning the WJ3 1500M sprints at the Irish Indoors Rowing Championships held in UL. She led from the start and held off fierce competition from a large entry beating fellow Kerry contestants from Callinfercy and Workman’s into 2nd and 3rd place. Lara’s time was 1 minute 53 and to make it even sweeter this was her first competitive rowing event. Sarah McLoughlin won her 500m WLTA event and finished second in her 1000m WLTA event. All the Tralee squad taking part did well, especially considering many were taking part in their debut event. RUNNING TO GLORY: Tralee CBS won the Best Boys Cross Country School in the cross country event held in the Demesne Killarney with 15 schools from Kerry and West Limerick in action. CBS were followed by fellow Tralee school Mercy Mounthawk who took second with Presentation Milltown in 3rd. On the Girls section Presentation Killarney took the honours from Mercy Mounthawk who were taking their second runner’s up place ahead of Presentation Milltown Individual Honors: There was good success for Tralee athletes with Eimear O’Sullivan taking the Minor race. In the Boys the Minor, Junior and Senior races were won by CBS athletes with Mohammad Raheem taking the younger race and Fergal O’Brien winning the Junior title. Cillian Tierney, Mercy Mounthawk, made it three wins out of 4 categories winning the Senior section. The South Munster Cross Country races are taking place today, Friday January 28th, in CIT in Bishopstown. OSCAR OVER AND OUT:
Kerry bowed out of this year’s Oscar Traynor competition as they were defeated by the Leinster Senior League 1-0 in Mounthawk in their clash for a place in the quarter finals. ST PATS NOTES: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 12,13,18 and 25 and the next jackpot will be e4,500. Seniors Back: The senior team commenced training this week for the new season under the watchful eye of Joe Costello and Tim Moynihan. Jimmy Mulligan and Adrian Greaney will be the selectors with Padraig Murphy doing the coaching. Their first game is fixed for Sunday versus Ardfert but no venue has been confirmed at the time of going to print as the home pitch is currently unplayable. The Junior Championship will begin on April 16th and 17th with both Junior and Novice teams in the first round together. The winners will go into the Junior Premier with the losers into he Junior championship which has replaced the Novice. Medal Presentation: The Minor and Junior County League winning teams will get their medals along with the seniors who won the St Brendan’s Championship at a ceremony in Benners Hotel this Friday night at 9.30pm. Juveniles back in training: All the juvenile teams are back in training. Please contact any club officer for exact times. Girl’s training continues on Saturday at 3pm in the Presentation Hall. The club congratulates Fergal O’Brien who has been selected to compete in athletics in the International Children Games in Taiwan in July. Scor na bPaisti semi-finals for North Kerry will take place on 9th of April with South Kerry the following day. The county final is set for April 17th. CAMOGIE NEWS: There was a very good attendance and interesting general discussion at the Parnell’s hosted Camogie Development workshop. All the feedback was collected for further discussion and a small team will collate and organize the material for inclusion in the Parnells 5 year plan. This plan is hope to be unveiled by April. Indoor Camogie Training: This continues every Tuesday for the next few weeks in the Complex in Tralee from 6 to 6.50pm. Table Quiz: Kerry Camogie County Board are holding a Table Quiz in Kerins O’Rahillys Clubhouse on Friday March 4th at 8.30pm. Tables are e20 and all are invited to attend. Camogie at the Kerry Sports Star Awards: Kerry/ Clanmaurice are delighted to be receiving an award at the Kerry Sports Star Awards on January 29th in the Malton Hotel, Killarney. Tickets cost e50 and anyone interested in supporting Kerry Camogie at the Awards can purchase tickets from 087 2679596. STACKS STORIES: The Rockies u6’s to 10 were out in force for their training last weekend in Mounthawk Gym and will be doing the same this Sunday morning. New players are always welcome to the session that starts for the u6’s – born
2010/11 at 10am. Nemo Tournament Off: The u14’s trip to Cork is off this weekend as the Nemo Rangers Tournament has been postponed due to the waterlogging of the pitches. It will be refixed for later in the year. Hopefully by the time the Feile is held in Kerry, West Limerick and North/ West Cork in June. The tournament takes place on the 24th to the 26th of June and preparations are already under way. The u16’s Boys are in Dublin this weekend and will be cheering on the Kingdom at Croke Park this Saturday night. They will also play a challenge against Cuala Kickhams. JOHN MITCHELS UP: A 1-11 to 0-13 win over Spa sees John Mitchels promoted to Division 1 for the coming season which is a great achievement by the squad and management. Spa started the better and opened a three point lead but Mitchels equalized but from there on Spa dominated and led 10 points to 5 at the break. However whatever was said in the Mitchels dressing room certainly worked and they started the second half in blistering pace and hit 1-02 without reply to level the game. The game was on a knife edge and looked like going into extra time until Alan O’Donoghue kicked a great point to give the Tralee boys the win. The club is thrilled to be back in the top flight after a 12 year wait to get back to Division 1. The club wants to thank Brosna for the excellent pitch and after match refreshments. Club Convention: The Annual convention was held in the clubhouse and tributes were paid to Chairperson Matt Moloney and Vice Chair Noel O’Connor and all the officers for their hard work during the year and outgoing officers were returned. Lotto: There was no winner from the numbers drawn 4,7,12, and 19 and the next jackpot will be e1,900 ON THE GREENS: LIAM AND DOR DRIVE INTO NEW ROLE AT TRALEE GC: The Captain’s Drive In by Liam Nolan and Dor O’Driscoll took place at Tralee Golf club on Sunday and a great days sport was had by all who attended. The Back Line results saw the team of Willie Goulding, John O’Brien, Joe McCarthy and Kieran O’Callaghan take the win with a total of 27 5/8 points. Second placed was the team of Alan Kelly, Pat Williams, John Paul Enright and Gene Kelly with a score of 28 5/16. Third on the Back Nine were John Keane, Bernie Keane, Philomena Stack and Maurice Laide. They were just pipped as the ended with 28 6/16’s. On the Front Nine it was John Keane, Bernie Keane, Philomena Stack and Anna Keane were the top team with 26 2/16’s/ Liam Hussey, Damo Lyne, Mike O’Halloran and Pat Stack took the runners up places just ahead of Jim O’Donovan, Colm Sheehy, Jim O’Connor and Goretti O’Connor.
