SUSTAINABLE TOURISM

– NOT JUST A BUZZ WORD

Just what is Sustainable Tourism and how do we factor it into our travels? Helen Hayes gives us the low down.

Let’s face it. Sustainable Travel is a lot of different things to a lot of different people. To some, it is taking their own coffee cup and drink bottle to cut down on the use of plastic water bottles and countless disposable and mostly not biodegradable coffee cups. To others, it is riding a bike or walking rather than using a car to lower the carbon footprint. And to a growing number of travellers, it is choosing to make a difference to the places they are visiting, selecting a destination where they can stay longer to really get to know it and appreciate it, supporting the community and playing a small part in cementing its future.

Leroo La Tau, Botswana

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) defines Sustainable Tourism as “Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.”

In 2015, world leaders, through the UN established 17 goals to help the planet and the people on it. Known as the Global Goals (previously known as the Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs) they are a good place to start. Choose one goal, choose two, but do what you can. Every little bit helps.

ALL CREATURES GREAT & SMALL

Sustainable Travel is also about supporting communities and charitable organisations who are doing great things for animal welfare. It is about finding the RIGHT organisations that are not just talking the talk but walking the walk. There are many groups working in the wildlife space, from elephant sanctuaries and orphanages to rhino conservation, coral garden planting, reef conservation, bilby sanctuaries, turtle monitoring, monitoring endangered species … the list is extensive. The trick is to look deeper into the organisation you are thinking of supporting, or visiting, and ask yourself is it benefit-sharing for its community, operating sustainably, and investing in and supporting conservation measures.

TRAVELLING LIGHTER

Of course to travel, we have to have a mode of transport and that is a conundrum for many. But we are not just going to stop flying. We can, however, make choices around that. All airlines carbon offset, but what do they do with it then? Do some research before you settle on an airline. That might not be practical for every flight you take, but again, every little bit helps. You can also help by travelling with carry-on only. Again – not always possible but less weight means less carbon.

Once on the ground in your destination, how are you going to get around? Try and use public transport where you can. Trains are a great option. For instance, in Switzerland, there are 9000 trains travelling on around 3000 kms of track, so it is easy to explore by rail. And trains emit less C02 than any other form of motorised transport. Take an electric bus if you have a choice, and if you are not that far from where you want to go in the city or town you are visiting, walk. Then there are bikes. Doing a tour on a bike is a great way to explore a

destination, helps keep you fit and keeps cars off the road. If you are going to hire a car, try for an electric car or a hybrid. It all helps lower emissions.

STAYING GREEN –SUSTAINABLE ACCOMMODATION

This is where we need to dig a bit deeper – making a choice on where to stay. Hotels might say they are eco-friendly, but are they really? Check their websites to see what they are really doing. Are they conserving energy through things like LED lighting, have they banned plastic, are guests offered the chance to forego the daily cleaning to save water from washing towels and sheets and do they put that money they save towards a greening project or the like? Are they offering refillable water bottles and do they have a decent recycling program in place?

Some hotels have motion sensor lighting. Others have smart technology that automatically shuts window coverings and turns lights off to maintain the room temperature when guests are out. And don’t get me started on amenities in the bathrooms. It is really not good enough to have tiny plastic bottles in every shower, in every room of a hotel that says it has sustainable practices. I take my own shampoo and conditioner – that negates the problem of ever having to open a pesky mini plastic bottle. Another important choice is to choose a place that is locally owned and operated. That way you can be sure the money goes back into the community.

As for dining when travelling, choose places that sing about local produce. They grow what they can, source from within the local area and create menus using produce that is in season and has a low carbon footprint. Another question to ask is what happens with their food waste? Do they compost it? Are they aiming for zero waste?

To travel sustainably is a whole combination of things, with the key words being to travel with purpose, and to make travel matter. A smart way to go about it is to book a small-group tour with a company that has done all the hard work for you in terms of finding the people and places that are doing great things in sustainability. You can even choose a particular type of tour that is all about sustainable tourism.

By being aware of the choices we are making, and making conscious choices around sustainability, we are making a difference.

THE CONSERVATION COLLECTION – THE RIGHT ADVENTURE

With the spotlight well and truly focused on sustainable travel, Adventure World’s new Conservation Collection is the right choice for the curious and thoughtful traveller.

Saying you are a sustainable travel company does not make it so. You have to actually be making giant strides towards doing everything you can to be sustainable.

Adventure World is doing just that, creating their inaugural Conservation Collection, a range of potentially life-changing journeys endorsed by the respected and prestigious TreadRight Foundation. And when we say life-changing, we mean for the communities the tours visit and the people visiting them.

TREADING RIGHT WITH ADVENTURE WORLD

For Adventure World, the key message is not just to travel, but to ‘Travel With Purpose’. The new Conservation Collection is a great example of this and will appeal to those who want to tread lightly on our planet, leaving no footprint. Within this magazine you will find six itineraries, to North India, Botswana, Colombia, Namibia, Borneo and Costa Rica – with more available with your Travel Associates advisor.

Each are carbon neutral staying at hotels that have robust sustainability practices in place, employ local people and give back to their communities. Low carbon transportation is also used wherever possible plus there is a steely resolve to choose experiences based on the impacts they have – environmentally and socially. The ‘Make Travel Matter’ Experiences, which are knitted into the fabric of the Conservation Collection tours, are selected using a strict set of criteria, set by the TreadRight team, who look at the United Nations Global Goals (formerly Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs) and how these experiences help advance one or more of those goals.

TreadRight’s mission is steadfast and clear; “to have a positive impact on the people and communities we visit, to protect wildlife and marine life, and to care for the planet we call home.”

ON TOUR

Before launching the Conservation Collection, Adventure World Travel already went the extra mile or three to create tailor-made, unique and extraordinary travel experiences. Attention to detail, exceptional customer service, day-to-day activities that will go straight into the pool room of the memory bank. These new tours offer accommodation that evokes the destination and have proven their commitment to put sustainable measures in place, along with caring for the environment, looking after their staff and giving back to the local communities. One example is El Almejal Eco Lodge and Rainforest Reserve in Bahia Solano, Colombia, which has won numerous awards for green and sustainable tourism. The sustainability section of their website is impressive.

Another hotel included in the North India Conservation Collection itinerary is Vanghat, adjacent to the Corbett Tiger Sanctuary. It was designed and built using location construction techniques, the staff are drawn from local villages and the property supports health, education and wildlife initiatives in the local area and beyond.

In Namibia, Huab Under Canvas has one of the lowest carbon footprints in the country, while in Botswana,

Chobe Game Lodge is a five-star lodge in Chobe National Park that has full eco-grading by the Botswana Tourist Board.

MAKE TRAVEL MATTER EXPERIENCES

One of the great joys of travel is to be able to learn about other cultures, through meeting local people, and experiencing local traditions and customs. With these tours you can also make a difference with many projects and places that are making strides to monitor, conserve and protect wildlife species. And do not worry, every wildlife experience on these itineraries adhere to Adventure World’s Animal Welfare Policy and have been endorsed by World Animal Protection. A proportion of the cost of these itineraries goes back to the hosts of the experiences.

There are several Make Travel Matter-badged offerings on each itinerary, for instance in Costa Rica, you could be involved in sloth conservation, learn how to make your own soil fertiliser using fruit and vegetable residue and help protect nesting turtles. In Namibia, you could track a black rhino in the Huab Conservancy, visit the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, the only NGO (Non-Governmental Organisation) dedicated to the conservation of giraffes in the wild and help the AfriCat Foundation, who run the largest leopard and cheetah rescue program in the world. In Botswana, spend a day with Elephants Without Borders and see how they work to reduce the human-elephant conflict. In Colombia, protect pumas, learn about endangered cotton-top tamarins and monitor anteaters, while in Borneo, visit the Sun Bear Conservation Centre and help plant trees to assist the 1Stop Borneo Wildlife Corridor Project, that is helping wildlife like pygmy elephants make safe transitions between two forest reserves. In North India, visit the Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation Centre in Mathura, who rescue and rehabilitate elephants that have been abused or exploited.

Finally, there are the many stunning places you will visit on these itineraries, from Costa Rica’s Arenal Volcano Region to Borneo’s UNESCO World-Heritage listed Mount Kinabalu National Park; the Okavango Delta in Botswana to the wetlands and savannahs of Los Llanos in Colombia; and from Corbett National Park in North India to the Okonjima Nature Reserve in Namibia. And that is just a sample of the many wondrous places Adventure World’s Conservation Collection itineraries can take you.

Best of all, you have the added advantage of knowing that you have made a difference to the people and places you visited, left little trace and did in fact, travel with purpose.
