BRITISH COLUMBIA Landscapes will make your soul sing with a desire to be outdoors
British Columbia
British Columbia’s landscapes will make your soul sing with a desire to be outdoors. Canada’s westernmost province boasts over 1000 protected parks, woven through with stunning trails and waterways.
Vancouver Island is a haven of temperate rainforests and sweeping coastal horizons. Tofino is considered the country’s best surf break, and along with nearby Ucluelet, is a storm-watching hotspot. Ucluelet is also a wonderful place to see the black bears, as well as whales of all kinds including orca, humpback and grey. You can island-hop your way back to the mainland through the Gulf or Discovery Islands, each of which will tempt you with a unique set of charms.
While exploring the west coast, keep an eye out for the Spirit Bear. The Great Bear Rainforest, which is on the west coast but north of Vancouver Island, is the only place you can see this incredibly rare black bear with a recessive gene, making it white. You may also be lucky enough to spot orcas frolicking in the Strait of Georgia or catch sight of bald eagles, seals, otters and sea lions who make their home on the west coast.
Beautiful British Columbia is not just for nature lovers. Mountain towns, cities on the edge of nature, and cultural gems make the province a true crowd-pleaser, and a stellar road trip destination.
In summer, any wayside stall can present you with juicy peaches, plump cherries, and velvety apricots. In winter, top-notch ski resorts attract skiers and boarders from around the world, but the vivacious ski towns mean you can have just as much fun indoors.
Don’t miss a stop in the Thompson Okanagan region. Home to an incredible selection of local and Indigenous artists, restaurants, cultural and historical attractions. Boasting the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, the natural wonder of this diverse region includes sprawling lakes, towering mountains, rolling hills and a dry desert. Spend the summer months hiking and biking, fishing and boating, and when the temperature drops, head to the mountains to ski the champagne powder.
Inviting in all seasons, British Columbia is ideal for anyone who wants to sample an array of iconic Canadian culture and nature.

Walk off your feast in Stanley Park, a 400-hectare oasis that has countless hiking trails, beaches, and attractions, including the famous Hollow Tree. It was slated for removal in 2006, but was saved by a local fundraising effort so future generations could snap their picture in the ancient cedar’s embrace.
Granville Island is a must-visit hub of culture just steps from the heart of downtown, renowned for its boutique galleries, artisan workshops, and Public Market. Head to nearby Robson Street if you prefer a spot of mainstream shopping, or visit Gastown for a stroll through the oldest neighbourhood in the city, complete with Victorian architecture
and cobblestones. Vancouver also has an excellent choice of museums and art galleries, including the Museum of Anthropology, which features a stunning collection of First Nations artefacts.
On the North Shore, you’ll find Grouse Mountain, which boasts spectacular views over Vancouver. It’s renowned as a ski resort, but it’s also home to a wildlife refuge and an array of dining and activity options in all seasons. The nearby Capilano Suspension Bridge Park dares you to cross the 70-metre drop to the roaring Capilano River, explore Cliffwalk along a granite precipice or wander through Treetops Adventure for a squirrels eye view of the temperate rainforest.

Yukon
Colloquially known as ‘the Yukon’, this region is big on natural experiences, but not on crowds. Just hours north of Vancouver you’ll discover a diverse wilderness that contains everything from the smallest desert in the world to enticing natural hot springs.
You can hike, paddle, or bike your way through canyons, tundra and mountainscapes that photos will never do justice. Whether you’re gazing at Canada’s highest peak, Mt Logan or across the world’s largest icefield, in Kluane National Park, the grandeur of Yukon’s wilderness can only be realised in person. For unforgettable views, you can take a flight seeing excursion from Whitehorse or Haines Junction to Mt Logan and Kluanes National Park
Animal lovers will be thrilled by the profusion and variety of wildlife. A visit to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve could mean sightings of moose, bison or caribou; just the start of a long list of critters that are cared for in their natural habitats. From Dawson City, you can take a day trip to Tombstone Territorial Park, 2200 square kilometres of unique wilderness.
Need a break from outdoor escapades? Dive into Yukon’s gold rush history, which is yours to explore at
an array of excellent museums and historical sites. The town of Dawson City was the centre of the Klondike Goldrush and is a must see for visitors.
Learn about the region’s first residents at the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre, where you’re invited to dive deep into rich Indigenous culture. A quirky gem is the Sign Post Forest at Watson Lake, a growing collection of signs brought by visitors from all over the world.
No description of Yukon would be complete without mention of the Northern Lights. In the colder months, conditions are prime for dancing shows of aurora borealis, but you could add an extra sprinkle of magic by viewing them from a dog sled or hot tub.
If you want to feel truly close to nature, while immersing yourself in incredible history, Yukon is for you.

Banff and Lake Louise
When you think of Canada, the images that spring to mind were probably taken in Banff National Park. Pictures can’t do the aquamarine waters of Lake Louise and Moraine Lake justice, and the bulk of the mountains are indescribable. It’s a landscape that makes you feel deliciously humble.
EXPERIENCES
In summer, there are hiking, biking and paddling opportunities for days, which all come with the high probability of a wildlife sighting. In winter, the famous slopes of Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise Ski Resort and Mt. Norquay live up to the hype, delivering fluffy powder snow and show-stopping views.
The Tunnel Mountain trailhead is minutes from downtown; it’s a short summer hike with a steady incline, and the views are a million per cent worth it. Another local favourite is the paddle from the Banff Canoe Club dock up Echo Creek. This easy route wends along peaceful waterways before opening out onto the sweeping vistas of Vermilion Lakes.
For two magical weeks in autumn, the larch trees fire gold in striking contrast to their evergreen neighbours. If you’re lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, hiking through this brilliant foliage is an experience that will glow in your memory.
The town of Banff and hamlet of Lake Louise are thriving mountain communities, with alluring shopping and dining options to complement your adventures. Don’t miss a visit to Whitebark Cafe for the best coffee in Banff, or high tea with gobsmacking views at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise
Banff and Lake Louise are ideal for anyone looking for an accessible way to enjoy the majesty of the mountains. The views from Banff Avenue may be enough to fill your Instagram feed for days.

After the sun sets on an action-packed day, tilt your head towards the stars. Their brilliance did not occur by chance; Jasper is a Dark Sky Preserve that strives to minimize the effect of light pollution. Every October, the park hosts the Jasper Dark Sky Festival, which includes a starlit concert, photography workshops, and an array of expert speakers.
Wintertime brings a unique set of experiences. Frozen waterfalls and fantastic ice formations transform a Maligne Canyon tour into a fairytale adventure. Manitoba
Canada’s central province is not as flashy as some of her neighbours, but adventures are thick on the ground.
Churchill, Manitoba is considered the polar bear capital of the world, where the region’s healthy population of white beauties spends the warmer months lazing along the coastline. October and November is prime viewing time. The polar bears congregate on the shoreline, ready to launch across the ice for their winter hunting season.
These so-called Lords of the Arctic should be viewed from a distance, but you can jump in a Zodiac to get closer to the friendly beluga whales during the summer migration.
Churchill is also one of the planet’s highest-rated spots to view the Northern Lights. There’s a great chance of a show at most times of the year, but the dark skies of February and March are optimal. You don’t need to brave the cold, either - visit the Aurora Domes, just 20 minutes out of Churchill. These heated bubbles offer an immersive viewing of the shimmering skies away from the light pollution of town.
Manitoba’s summertime lake country, boreal forests and rolling tundra invite you to paddle and hike to your heart’s content, and urban delights beckon all year round.
The picturesque capital of Winnipeg is home to the wonderful Canadian Museum for Human Rights, as well as the culinary temptations of the historic Forks Market. It also hosts over 100 unique festivals per year, so there’s always a reason to celebrate with the locals.
Manitoba can show you a Canadian way of life that is less affected by tourism, although you’re sure to have company when it comes to polar bear and beluga whale adventures.
