Adelaide, the boutique capital of South Australia, is the gateway to this beautiful place, whether you fly into Adelaide International Airport, or perhaps journey by train on the iconic Ghan railway, the Indian Pacific, the Great Southern or the Overland. Driving is a popular way to go, allowing longer stays and free-range itineraries that appeal to the spontaneous, curious traveller.

From the vibrant and arty streets of Adelaide, it is easy to book a tour or drive yourself into one of the many captivating regions of South Australia. bottles to your wine rack. There are 80 cellar doors dotted around 24 towns, including the three main settlements of Tanunda, Angaston and Nuriootpa, which are creaking with culinary experiences.

For an ample slice of coastline with a feast of food and wine, the Fleurieu Peninsula serves it up in style. Just 40 minutes away from Adelaide, there is much to discover, from the McLaren Vale region which is known for its sustainable wine production and gastronomic experience, to spectacular coastal towns like Victor Harbor and Goolwa.

For truly rewarding experiences a little further afield from the Capital, take the approximately six-hour drive to the wildly beautiful Eyre Peninsula, or one of a kind Kangaroo Island, which is easily accessible by car ferry. Both destinations can also be reached by air from Adelaide. This is Adelaide

Like a fine vintage, Adelaide just gets better with age, with this cool, boutique city blossoming with creativity, personality and flair. It is a city designed for exploring, with striking architecture, an array of art that makes the city pop with colour, a DNA that flows with music, serene parks that flank the city with a cool cloak of green, and a vibrant and eclectic selection of restaurants and bars. And if a day on the beach is on your holiday agenda, Glenelg’s famous Bay Tram takes just 45

minutes from the city to its golden sand and buzzing beach vibe –complete with beach bars.

When we say Adelaide has great art and music, we are not exaggerating. It is Australia’s first – and only – UNESCO Creative Music City (designated in 2015), and one of the city’s biggest murals was painted as a celebration of that feat. Located at 128 Hindley Street in the city, the mural – alive with colour – is an epic 1,000 square metres.

Street art is everywhere, hidden down laneways, alongside heritage buildings, around Rundle Street, Hindley Street, Liverpool Street and at the University of Adelaide. There is more street art to be found in the streets around Port Adelaide thanks to Wonderwalls, with local, national and internationally recognised street artists adding their stamp to more than 60 murals on prime locations such as the Marine and Harbors building and Harts Mill.

Wander around the city and you’ll also uncover a collection of monuments, sculptures and art installations that add another artistic element to this impressive, lively city. Not to mention the 45,000 pieces of art at the Art Gallery of South Australia.

Adelaide sings with music and art, food and wine, with several major festivals attracting crowds of people who all love the arts. The Adelaide Fringe Festival needs no introduction, as it is the biggest arts festival in the Southern Hemisphere, with everything from cabaret, theatre, comedy and circus to music and visual arts, workshops. Fringe has extended from Adelaide right across Greater South Australia, with events running from Whyalla to Naracoorte. In 2023 Fringe will be celebrated from 17 February to 19 March 2023.

July is the month that Adelaide lights up, through Illuminate Adelaide, a celebration of innovation, art, light, music and technology. In 2021, the event attracted 1.2 million people to its first full program, with works by over 400 local, interstate, and international artists.

Another popular event is the Clare Valley Gourmet Week, which will run from 19 to 28 May with masterclasses and cooking schools, meet the winemaker events, art exhibitions and more. A highlight is the Long Lunch, or Lunches, held in quirky, hidden away locations in collaboration with restaurants and food personalities. The Clare Valley is around two hours’ drive from Adelaide, which is the gateway to the state, including several world-class wine regions.

Food is also high on the list for visitors to Adelaide, with a range of wonderful restaurants to choose from as well as cocktail bars, wine rooms, rooftop bars or hidden speakeasy-style bars for that pre-or postdinner drink. Foodies will also want to experience Adelaide’s famous Central Market, the largest undercover market in the Southern Hemisphere.

It is not just lobster that is on the menu for seafood lovers, with the Eyre Peninsula’s Coffin Bay Oysters and Bluefin Tuna, along with a banquet of other seafood varieties

from King George Whiting to prawns, simply delectable. South Australia’s produce truly shines, farmed and grown from fertile soil and a diet of sunshine and rain. A recent road trip showcased beautiful rural vistas with lush green paddocks dotted with cattle or sheep, while in other areas, fields of canola gleamed a canary yellow.

There are so many tastes to uncover, with 18 world-renowned wine regions ensuring your wine cellar will have some new additions when you go home. And it would be wrong to leave South Australia without a box or two of Haigh’s chocolates and some Kangaroo Island honey. As you travel around the state, you will come across all kinds of home-grown delights, from divine Portuguese tarts and queuedfor sourdough from Rise of Robe or original recipe scrolls at the ScRoll Queen in Mount Gambier.

In Adelaide, Restaurant Botanic does things differently with 20 ‘flavour combinations’ served as part of a curated tasting menu by chef Justin James. You might feast on things like green ants, finger limes, paperbark parsnip pie or bunya bunya branches. Discover the flavours of Northern Africa at Africola, where unfamiliar spices will transport you to this far-flung continent, and sign up for a food tour of Adelaide Central Markets to meet local producers and taste premium foods with everything from cheeses to bush tucker.

Another fine dining experience is to be had at Penfolds Magill Estate, home of the prestigious Penfolds Grange. Head chef Scott Huggins is all about seasonal produce with diners sure to be rendered almost speechless with stunning views, contemporary food, and exemplary service. And all just 15 minutes from the CBD.

In the Adelaide Hills, find the hidden gem that is Red Cacao, tucked away in a leafy laneway in Stirling. Marcus Booth-Remmers is a chocolate magician, creating a huge array of chocolates in this boutique artisan chocolatier, café and dessert bar. Cheese lovers should sign up for a master class at Udder Delights in Hahndorf, where you can enjoy a cheese and wine flight then make your own cheeses under the guidance of cheese maker Sheree Sullivan.

The Barossa is known for its food and wine, with many incredible gourmet experiences to be had, including visiting Maggie Beer’s The Farm Eatery in Nuriootpa. Taste the region’s produce, chat to local producers at the Barossa Farmers Markets and source ingredients, then join head chef Tim to cook a four-course lunch. Hentley Farm is another Barossa treasure, with head chef Clare Falzon serving fine dining dishes crafted from what she forages on the property.

In Port Lincoln, L'Anse French Café & Croissanterie sources South Australian produce, with Line & Label Restaurant at Peter Teakle serving delicious food with jaw-dropping views overlooking Port Lincoln and Boston Bay. In Coffin Bay, Oyster HQ is arguably the best place to eat oysters plucked fresh the sea.

From cycling the Clare Valley to hiking spectacular Kangaroo Island

It was a wild ride, and although we were surfing, there was no salt water to be found. We were dune surfing at Little Sahara Adventure Centre on Kangaroo Island, just one of many wonderful activities to be enjoyed here. We explored on a quad biking tour, uncovered secret beaches and swam with dolphins in gin-clear water.

South Australia has so many wonderful and varied activities, from shark-cage dives in Port Lincoln to caving adventures, cycling trails and hikes. The granddaddy of all hikes is The Heysen Trail, the longest in Australia extending 1,200 kilometres from Cape Jervis on the Fleurieu Peninsula to Parachilna Gorge in the Flinders Ranges.

1 Ride the Riesling Trail in the Clare Valley

The Riesling Trail is a rail trail that runs for 35 kilometres from Auburn to Clare and Barinia. Named after the wine variety the Clare is famous for, this trail takes you past many cellar doors as well as other sights, including Sevenhill, a historic Jesuit settlement. 2 Kayak tour of the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary

Talk about surreal. This amazing experience is on the Garden Island Ships’ Graveyard Maritime Trail, where 25 hulking and ghostly ships have been laid to rest among the 10,000-year-old mangroves. It is also home to 30 bottlenose dolphins, with another 300 popping in from time to time. Kayak tours are run by marine biologists who will guide you through creeks, share local Indigenous stories and point out other wildlife.

3 A feast for the senses

South Australia offers a huge range of tours that appeal to gourmands, adventure lovers, wildlife enthusiasts and more. In Port Lincoln and Coffin Bay, Robe and Kingston, savour succulent seafood from clean, pure waters. 4 Meander down the Murray

The Murray really is mighty and with Murray River Trails you can cruise, paddle and stroll through this important landscape on a three-day, two-night Murray River Safari. 5 Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail

The Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail is a five-day trek covering 61 kilometres of the island’s many and varied natural wonders. As the Trail recovers from the devastating bushfires of 2019-20, the Trail has been modified, and the only way to do it is with a licensed tour company. You will still see many of Kangaroo Island’s natural highlights, as well as taking in the beauty and wonder of regenerating plants. We would recommend a one of a kind experience with local tour operator Exceptional Kangaroo Island for an authentic and intimate understanding of what this incredible island has to offer.

The best places to relax in South Australia

The swag is cosy, on this sturdy wooden platform out in the rugged and wild landscape of ancient Wilpena Pound. Up above, the real prime time show is on, an uncountable number of stars brightening the black velvet sky, along with a couple of galaxies. DAY ONE – ADELAIDE

“When you land in Adelaide, I would suggest starting with an overnight stay at the gorgeous new Sofitel Adelaide. It’s the only internationally recognised 5-star hotel in the city and just opened its doors in October 2021. Enjoy the beautiful open plan rooms with a bath facing west to take in sweeping views of the sunset and ocean. Of course, a glass of French bubbly is a must to make the most of the experience.”

The historic Adelaide Central Markets, established in 1869, is a fantastic option for lunch or even just a stroll while in town. With over 70 market stalls, it is one of the largest undercover fresh produce markets in the Southern Hemisphere, and buzzes with life year-round, offering a huge range of fresh food including fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry, seafood, cheeses, bakery, smallgoods and health foods, along with some of Adelaide’s most popular cafes and eateries.

“For dinner, take in one of the fabulous local restaurants on Peel or Leigh St and make sure to find the intimate and enticing Maybe Mae, a hidden

speakeasy in the basement of No. 15 Peel St which makes the best cocktails in town and has 7 consecutive state cocktail bar awards to prove it.

My go-to is Peel St Restaurant for modern Australian food served family style – and don't miss their much loved 'Chicken Blossom Salad'.

DAY TWO –ADELAIDE HILLS

“Wake up after a great night’s rest, hire a car and drive up to the Adelaide Hills. You must have a delicious lunch at The Lane – where small bites are matched with divine wines overlooking the vineyards (complete with helipad!). From here, visit a few of the local wineries – The Hills is known for its whites and lighter reds, but there’s also Bird In Hand, Deviation Road and Nepenthe making the top of my list for the region.”

“Settle down for the night at Mt Lofty and enjoy mesmerising views of the Picadilly Valley. You can choose between the gracious Mt Lofty House or the ultra-luxurious Sequoia

Lodge, featuring a view of the stars from your bed. While staying at either, dine at Hardy's Verandah Restaurant for a wonderful degustation dining experience.”

DAY THREE – BAROSSA

“Skip breakfast (as hard as that is) and head to the Barossa Valley. Why, you ask? I recommend you make time for coffee and breakfast or a wickedly delicious piece of cake at El Estanco in Greenock. The Crack Pie is worth the drive alone. Once you’ve made it to the world-renowned wine region, discover some of the local favourite wineries – Torbreck for serious red wines, Whistler for its cute outdoor area and 'dry as a bone’ Rose, Rockford for the Black Shiraz bubbles which are a personal favourite, or the famed Basket Press.

Have lunch at Fino (but book ahead) and enjoy fabulously unfussy food alfresco or in the cellar and taste a port from your year of birth. Stroll around the lovely gardens to aid digestion before checking in to The Louise to stay the night. You won’t want to over-indulge too much, because a degustation dinner is waiting for you The Louise’s renowned restaurant, Appellation. Of course, if you couldn’t help yourself with the delicious delights of the day, you can opt for bar-style favourites in the more casual restaurant, Contour.

DAY FOUR & FIVE – PARINGA VIA CLARE VALLEY

Allow plenty of time for an excellent breakfast at The Louise before hitting the road and heading north. Travel via the stunning Clare Valley and sample the world-famous Rieslings of the region. My personal favourite up that way is Tim Adams and it's the pinot gris that draws me in every time. For something a little different, stop in at Paulett Wines and do the 'wine and chocolate' pairing, which is lots of fun. The red bubbles (a fabulous Sparkling Red) is worth a taste as well!

Next, make your way up to Paringa and check in at The Frames for 2 nights – hosts Cathy and Rick know everything there is to know about the area and will make sure you have an incredible time. Allow 2 nights, which you certainly won’t regret, because The Frames offers both a luxurious and private retreat to relax and a long list of activities to do from its position on the banks of the Murray River. Venture

out for a sunset cruise with champagne and nibbles in a beautifully restored Gondola, join a guided tour through creeks and wetlands, visit the National Parks, and taste award-winning Riverland wines from the many cellar doors.

DAY SIX –ADELAIDE

Make your way down the expressway back to Adelaide and enjoy an overnight stay at the Mayfair Hotel – the perfect contrast to the Sofitel with it's heritage building and one of a kind rooms. Enjoy a cocktail up on the hotel roof at HENNESSY Rooftop Bar followed by dinner downstairs in the Mayflower Restaurant – the signature Beef Wellington is to die for.

DAY SEVEN –ADELAIDE

Before heading to the airport, walk down to Peter Rabbit – it’s about 10 minutes walk from the Mayfair . Just look for the caravan out the front. This little winner has a wonderful breakfast and brunch menu, outstanding options for all dietary requirements and incredible coffee. In the winter, it even has a fire pit out front, and they actually do have real rabbits on site!
