Islands are places of timeless beauty and endless possibilities
—
Let’s face it. We all love an island holiday. My first overseas trip as a young adult was to Fiji. I still remember the piña coladas by the pool, the intoxicating scent of frangipani dancing on the breeze, the pure elation of snorkelling with all kinds of colourful fish and the smiles of the Fijian people. Fiji had me at ‘bula’.
Most of our island holidays tend to be to warmer climates, to places like Hawai’i where we can warm up in the tropical sun and immerse in an azure blue sea and deep traditions of mālama.
Travel Associates can curate your dream tour with this selection of islands, from favourites like Bali and Phuket to island hopping cruises and islands that abound with adventure.
Our 300 experienced Travel Advisors – all with a minimum of
10 years travel under their belts –know that every client is different, with individual travel styles and tastes. They love nothing more than creating perfectly personalised experiences that will create priceless memories.
Pick up the phone and start chatting to the Travel Associates team about which island you would like to visit.
Once your island holiday is set and excitement mounts, you can travel with confidence, knowing that your travel advisor has taken care of every little detail.
I feel the need for some island time coming up soon… pass the sunscreen and save me a deck chair.
Yours in travel,
Helen Hayes

ISLAND delights
From tiny palm-clad atolls to islands with vertiginous peaks, island time is holiday time.
Islands are fascinating. They can gurgle up from the deep, can be created by coral deposits, or break off from a larger land mass due to enormous tectonic forces. They are mysterious microcosms of nature, and whether they are large, or small, we humans are smitten by them. Here are some of our favourites.

Club Med Finolhu, Maldives
Maldivian magic
This seafaring nation has 1192 islands, scattered like sparkling pearls across 871 kilometres of the Indian Ocean. It is a bucket-list destination, with stunning resorts on small, idyllic islands that are blinkingly beautiful with white sand beaches, turquoise water and velvet green palms. All resorts have a vast array of activities on and off the water, and most offer a choice of overwater accommodation or beachside accommodation, where you can feel the sand between your toes with the tranquil waters on your doorstep. One thing nearly all of them have is a coral reef not that far away. House reefs are common, with SCUBA enthusiasts and keen snorkellers able to explore other popular sites by dive boat or on a traditional Dhoni. For luxury, romance and nature’s beauty, the Maldives is magic.
We Recommend CLUB MED FINOLHU
For a memorable break overflowing with indulgence and pampering, along with the many charms of this island nation, Club Med Finolhu Villas is a perfect choice. Its 52 eco-chic villas are overwater, where you can dive into the turquoise sea directly from your deck, or on the beach, with the island’s many activities and facilities within easy reach.

Whitsunday wonders
With 74 islands scattered around the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsundays is a jewel in Australia's crown. Fly in to Hamilton Island or Whitsundays Coast Airport in Proserpine, before venturing out to your resort of choice. Do a scenic helicopter or fixed-wing flight over the star-studded reef, its patchwork of aquamarine water and coral reefs laid out below. Heart Reef is always a highlight, as is a trip to Whitehaven Beach and neighbouring Hill Inlet which might just have the best view of all. Above and below the water, the Whitsundays is holiday heaven.
We Recommend INTERCONTINENTAL HAYMAN ISLAND RESORT
InterContinental Hayman Island is a blissful escape, accessed by a luxury cruiser from Hamilton Island or you can arrange a private helicopter transfer. HIDDEN gems
Intensely wild La Réunion
This French island, a geographical marvel in the Indian Ocean, is wildly different, from the lowlands to the forests and to the pitons, cirques and ramparts that are part of the UNESCO World Heritagelisted Reunion National Park. It has a rich history and is a mix of Asian, Indian, African and European cultures, evidenced by Hindu temples, century-old churches and Chinese pagodas as well as a diverse art and culinary scene. Hike up an active volcano, dive on a coral reef, dance to the Maloya and Séga music with its African roots, and do a helicopter flight over the island's mind-boggling scenery – its volcanoes, cirques, gorges and waterfalls. While in the neighbourhood visit Mauritius as well, just a 30-minute flight away.
Mauritius, Africa
Sumba... where time stands still
The island of Sumba sits between Komodo and Sumbawa islands in Indonesia. It is a hidden treasure, with communities still living by ancient Marapu traditions. Small hilltop villages dot the countryside with thatched clan houses set around ancient megalithic tombs. Sumba Horses – a local breed dating back to the 8th century – play a big role on the island, and once a year both horses and villagers take part in the Pasola festival, where hundreds of warriors on horseback, man and horse wearing traditional garb, charge at each other hurling blunted spears.
We Recommend
NIHI SUMBA
With 28 villas, NIHI Sumba is a haven that offers an unforgettable stay. Watch the local horses swim at sunset, walk on pristine beaches, learn about the local culture, and surf waves that are coveted by the world's best surfers. Contemplate the beauty of NIHI Sumba over sunset cocktails at the Boathouse.

Where the wild things are
South Georgia Island is a mountainous island, around 1300 km from the Falkland Islands, and plays a starring role in many an Antarctic adventure. It has an astonishing concentration of wildlife, as well as glaciers and achingly beautiful fjords. The island’s Salisbury Plain is home to a king penguin colony, while thousands of elephant seals can be seen at Gold Harbour, along with a staggering amount of Antarctic fur seals – imagine five million of them – about 95 per cent of their global population! Just staggering. It is not just wildlife that shines here. A visit to Grytviken is essential. This once-active whaling station has a museum with captivating stories about the early pioneers, including Ernest Shackleton, who is buried 10 minutes' stroll away in the Grytviken cemetery.

A journeyculinary Hawai‘iin
The spirit of aloha and mālama flows through every strand on the islands of Hawai‘i.
BY SUSAN GOUGH HENLY
With her gorgeous beaches and lush mountains plunging into the sea, her mellifluous music and warm hospitality, her caressing breezes and abundant marine life, Hawai‘i holds a special place in our hearts.
Too often, however, we stay at the admittedlygorgeous, manicured hotel compounds of Honolulu’s Waikīkī, when there is so much more to discover and savour across Hawai‘i’s four main islands, from the spectacular North Shore surf spots of O‘ahu and the paniolo cowboy culture of Maui to the waterfall-draped jagged cliffs and emerald valleys of Kaua‘i and the fiery volcanoes and black-sand beaches of the island of Hawai‘i.
Go beyond to discover the profound bond between the Hawaiian culture and the islands’ natural beauty. It’s embodied by two key words… aloha, which embodies a deep sense of affection, mutual respect and peace, and mālama, which means to care for, preserve and protect.

Connections
As you learn to love Hawai‘i the way Hawaiians do, not only do you help protect the āina (land) and moana (ocean) that they hold so close to their hearts, but you also experience a much deeper connection with this one of a kind place.
One of the key ways to explore culture and make connections is through food.
Hawai‘i might not be the first place you think of as a foodie haven, but its fecund landscapes and rich oceans deliver a fabulous array of fruits, vegetables, meats and seafood.
Native Hawaiians had a highly sustainable food culture based around seafood, taro, bananas, coconuts, sweet potatoes, breadfruit, candlenuts, chickens and pigs. The introduction of commercial sugar cane and pineapple plantations in the 1800s may have disrupted that system but it also brought in immigrants from Japan, China, Korea, Portugal and the Philippines who brought their own food traditions which have contributed…quite literally… to a melting pot of deliciousness.
travelassociates.com 17
O‘ahu, Hawai‘i
With the decline of the industrial scale plantations, quality local agriculture expanded and in the 1990s a dozen chefs created the Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine (HRC) movement which worked with local farms to supply their kitchens with fresh produce. Many of those trailblazers, such as Peter Merriman, Bev Gannon, Jean-Marie Josselin and Roy Yamaguchi, still operate restaurants. Now, a new generation of chefs, like Robynne Maii, Ed Kenney, Michelle and Wade Ueoka and Sheldon Simeon are continuing this flavourful journey. There’s much to savour.
My favourite place to dine was Moku Kitchen, a chef-driven concept led by awardwinning chef Peter Merriman. It is the perfect mix of local Hawaiian, American and Street Food. It's a cool modern restaurant and bar and the food was of such high quality.
Siobhan O'Connor, Travel Associates Cleveland, QLD
"So, if you look at the recipes here in Hawai‘i, they’re based off traditions 100 plus years ago, but in its own style.”
A CULINARY JOURNEY IN HAWAI‘I
~ SHELDON SIMEON

Culinary tourism
Today, visitors will not only find a uniquely Hawaiian food culture but also a colourful collection of Hawaiian creole (a blend of words that resulted from the Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino and Portuguese workers who came to Hawai‘i to work on the sugar cane and pineapple plantations) food terms, such as ‘grindz’ which means ‘food’ and ‘ono’ which you’ll use a lot because it is the local word for ‘delicious’.
While Hawai‘i’s splendid resorts have many great gourmet restaurants, be adventurous and get out into the community to taste
the real Hawai‘i. Be sure and visit farmers’ markets to buy directly from local producers. And, if you have a sweet tooth, sample Hawai‘i shave ice (brought by Japanese immigrants), malasadas (yeasted eggy no-holed donuts, brought by Portuguese immigrants) and crack seed (sweet, sour and savoury preserved fruit brought by Chinese immigrants) not to mention stopping at roadside stands to feast on banana smoothies and popsicles, fresh-cut pineapples, sugar cane, coconut juice, and coconut candy.
Here are some hot tips for everything from the finest restaurants to locals’ favourite food trucks, shave ice stands, and breweries.

Maui
Savour locally caught mahi mahi, ono and ahi at Mama’s Fish House on Maui’s north coast and taste local pork and beef at Bev Gannon’s Hali'imaile General store, the original farmto-table restaurant in Maui’s Upcountry. Enjoy inspired Hawaiian fusion food at new-Age Hawaiian chef Sheldon Simeon’s re-imagined Tiffany’s Restaurant and super-affordable Tin Roof lunch spot.
Maui’s best food trucks include Geste Shrimp, Dino’s Gourmet-on-the-Go, Kitoko Maui, and Nui’s Garden Kitchen Thai and, for shave ice, check out Ulalani’s ten locations and Breakwall Shave Ice. Ocean Organic Vodka and Maui Brewing Co. are other must-visit locales.

Hike the Devastation Trail, the challenging Crater Rim Trail or walk through the rainforestframed Nahuku Lava Tube. Visit also the sometimes snow-covered Maunakea, the highest point in Hawai‘i and an excellent star-gazing spot.

Top of the list is Merriman’s where the ‘Pied Piper of Hawaiian Regional Cuisine’ chef Peter Merriman established his first restaurant crafting thoughtful preparations of island-fresh ingredients, while Mark Pomaski offers Asian fusion creations at Moon & Turtle. See Peter Merriman’s recipe for Kalua Pork Quesadilla on page 24.
Visit the world’s cutest fruit stand near the Waipi‘o Vallet Lookout, ‘Umeke’s (Kona), Ola Brew (Kona and Hilo), deep sea fishing for your own catch, coffee farms, vanilla farms, numerous farmers markets and the Goat Dairy (Honomū).
And don’t miss the Original Big Island Shave Ice Company and Da Poke Shack for tuna poke bowls. Big Island Brewhaus is also a locals’ favourite.

O‘ahu
Sample superb sushi at Hanale by Islander Sake Brewery and seasonal delights at Robynne Maii’s Fete, an urban Brooklyn-meets-Hawaiian farmhouse, both in Honolulu’s Chinatown, and explore modern riffs on Hawaiian food traditions at Ed Kenney’s Mud Hen Water restaurant.
Offering a classic island vibe, O‘ahu has more food trucks than any of the islands. Check out Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck, Mike’s Huli Chicken, Sunrise Shack for acai bowls and smoothies, Elena’s Lunchwagon for Filipino specialties, and Five Star Poke.
Try malasadas from Leonard’s Bakery and the Kamehameha Bakery and classic shave ice from Uncle Clay’s House of Pure Aloha.
As for local tipples, you can’t go past Honolulu Beerworks and the Village Bottle Shop & Tasting Room, Hawai‘i’s first dedicated craft beer café, Ko Hana Rum and Island Distillers for vodka.

Gathering in Hawai‘i
Five of our trusted Travel Advisors spent seven days on an itinerary curated by Hawai‘i Tourism Oceania, digging deep into some of O‘ahu’s most popular attractions.
Sometimes called “The Gathering Place,” O‘ahu certainly lives up to its name. The third largest Hawaiian island is home to the majority of Hawaii's diverse population, a fusion of East and West cultures rooted in the values and traditions of the Native Hawaiian people. It’s this fundamental contrast between the ancient and the modern that makes discovering O‘ahu from bustling city life to laidback surf towns so enjoyable. You'll find plenty of different options for exploring O‘ahu's different regions, the island's many activities, its eclectic restaurants and accommodations.

I'll never forget our transfer driver from Nadi airport asking if it was our first time in Fiji, and when we said yes, his response was 'Welcome home'. I've stayed at Royal Davui, Sheraton Denarau, Sofitel Fiji, Vomo Island, and on Savusavu at Savasi Island Resort, Namale Resort and Jean Michel Cousteau Resort. All amazing luxury resorts with their own special touches. If you're looking for a special experience, try the sand cay beach picnic at Royal Davui, dining in a cave at Savasi, or a sunset picnic on a private island at Jean Michel Cousteau. No matter where you stay, once you've experienced the staff singing 'Isa Lei' to farewell you when you leave, you know you'll be back again.”

ISLAND Hopping
Why visit one island when you can visit many, on a luxury cruise.
BY SUE WALLACE
If you fancy an exciting hop around some of the world’s most picturesque island destinations, cruising is the ideal and stress-free way to discover stunning ocean-studded archipelagos that leave you in awe with their beauty, culture and history.
Tahiti with its swaying palm trees, white sandy beaches, azure lagoons and endless sunny days is one of those swoon-worthy places that simply takes your breath away – visit once and you may well want to return again and again.

PONANT’s Paul Gauguin cruises showcase the prettiest islands in French Polynesia where you can laze on a beach, spy on colourful fish beneath the waves and discover the culture and traditions shared by onboard Tahitian hosts called ‘Gauguines and Gauguins’, while enjoying a luxury intimate ship experience with great dining.
The Galapagos is another one of a kind destination that often tops bucket lists and really leaves you smitten and in awe of Mother Nature often with a life changing experience. Island hopping is made easy among the 13 main islands of the Galapagos with volcanic landscapes featuring black lava fields, cartoon-like prickly pear cactus and incense trees, red, black and white sandy beaches, volcanic shields, cones, mountains, craters and cliffs and amazing wildlife.
The longer you spend in these adventure-focused islands the more you want to know about the mysteries and intrigue that goes with them. Discovered by Charles Darwin in 1835, where animals are not fearful of visitors, it is a nature lover’s paradise. You will see giant tortoises moving ever so slowly, the pinky orange flamingos with their spindly legs “hoovering” food along the shore, nimble Galapagos penguins and the not-sopretty iguanas which are all as fascinating as the landscape. Luxury cruises lines venturing to the historic part of the world include Silversea and Seabourn as well as Aqua Expeditions’ intimate sparkling superyacht Aqua Mare with seven slick suites and fabulous cuisine.

Meandering the Med
The Mediterranean has long been a drawcard for island cruising including favourites Croatia with 70 plus islands, Greece with 277 inhabited islands and Spain’s popular Balearic Islands. Long considered a hidden gem, Croatia has a picturesque coast with the main islands of Hvar, Korcula Vis, Brac, Losinj, Rab and Mljet popular with travellers eager to enjoy the culture and beauty of the islands. Luxury yachts and smaller boats can slip into secluded harbours and tender boats can be used with bigger ships.
Greece with its whitewashed cobblestoned villages and blue-domed churches, rocky beaches, tavernas and gorgeous scenic views will always be a drawcard for cruise lovers and you won’t be disappointed. Ever since Mamma Mia hit the big screens, the Greek Islands have been even more popular. Luxury cruise lines including Silversea, Seabourn, Viking, Windstar Cruises and Oceania Cruises cruise around these iconic islands including stunning Santorini with its huge caldera and Mykonos with its windmills and oh-so-trendy beach clubs.
Spain’s sun-kissed Mediterranean Balearic Islands, east of the Spanish mainland, include postcard-perfect Mallorca, Menorca with its vineyards, party town Ibiza and Formentera with its looming cliffs, are known for their scenic beaches and turquoise waters. You’ll also find tasty dishes inspired by Spanish, Italian and African cuisine.

Sailing in paradise
One of the most remote island destinations is isolated Raja Ampat located on the north-western tip of West Papua, Indonesia, at the heart of the Coral Triangle. It is fast becoming a popular cruise destination as holidaymakers discover the beauty, unique history and culture of these islands and their inhabitants.
There are more than 1500 limestone karst island clusters, and it is known as one of the richest coral reef ecosystems in the world as well as being home to a wide array of marine life and more than 350 different species of bird life. The tropical paradise is a haven for divers and snorkellers alike who can spot black tip reef sharks, manta rays, and pygmy seahorses. Aqua Expedition’s Aqua Blu cruises from December to January, while Coral Expeditions also explores the rich diverse marine life of Raja Ampat and the Spice Islands. There’s a vast choice when it comes to the world’s most exotic island-hopping destinations where blue waters lap those silky sands and cerise sunsets streak the sky.

Island time... for the whole family
With all of us leading such busy lives, family time is precious. A great way to make the most of it is to book a multigenerational holiday on a private island, to create magic memories with your loved ones.
48
Having the grandparents along on a family vacation is special. The kids have more adults to play with and said adults can take turns to have some alone time, to enjoy a beautiful dinner, be pampered at the spa, or tackle some adventurous pursuits. As for family togetherness, nothing beats snorkelling to spot tropical fish in an azure lagoon, swimming (kids) or lazing (adults) by the pool, trying all the aquatic activities from kayaking to sailing, windsurfing to stand up paddle boarding, beachcombing for treasure, and enjoying some friendly competition playing board games or cards, then falling asleep on the lounges watching movies.
We have curated a list of some of our favourite private islands, some where you can book the whole resort, and others where the accommodation is so spread out, privacy will not be a problem.

Adventure ISLANDS
Islands are playgrounds, with coastlines to be explored, verdant peaks to climb and oceans to be surfed.
The view from the ridge is almost too good to be true. All of Lord Howe Island’s beauty is laid out before me; its glorious lagoon, narrow strips of lush greenery squeezed between coastlines, and at the far end, mystical Mt Lidgbird and its higher sibling Mt Gower, which is poking up into a halo of cloud. There are many walks on this island, from short strolls to the challenging Mt Gower climb, as well as snorkelling, surfing, diving and biking. Islands are places that call you outside to immerse yourself in nature, on water and on land. We have curated a list of some of the best islands to soar, stroll or swim.

On water
Say aloha to Hawai‘i, one of the most famous surf destinations on Earth. O‘ahu's North Shore has a treasure trove of surf breaks including Banzai Pipeline, Waimea Bay, Velzyland and Sunset, with most of them for experts only (especially in winter when the swells are enormous). Join the throng at Waikīkī to ride the waves on a longboard, go for a surf at Diamond Head, or on the other islands, head to Maui to surf Honolua Bay or Jaws, or Kaua‘i to ride Hanalei Bay. There are surf schools everywhere, if you want to learn to ride in the home of surfing.
BALI
A surfer’s Mecca, surfers are spoilt for choice in Bali. Some of the more popular beaches are on the Bukit Peninsula, with the iconic Uluwatu the main drawcard with its clifftop viewpoint and long rollers. If Ulus is too challenging, Balangan, Bingin and Dreamland are other options, where you can sit in a warung dining on local fare and have a massage afterwards. Canggu and Keramas are other renowned breaks in Bali. A different sort of adventure can be found in Ubud, where you can go whitewater rafting on the Ayung River.
MALDIVES
Most surf trips to the Maldives are on chartered boats, which cater to various budgets, groups of friends of families. You’ll sleep on the boat, eat on the boat and surf numerous breaks, the waves less challenging than in Hawai‘i or Bali. There are also some resorts that offer surfing … including Kandooma, Hudhuranfushi or stunning Niyama, the only luxury surf resort in the Maldives. With waves breaking right on shore at the Vodi break just off Play Island – one of the two islands at Niyama, it is so easy to catch a wave then chill at the resort.
With its clean breaks and crystal clear water, Fiji has some famous surf spots of its own. The Mamanucas, Coral Coast and Taveuni are the three main regions, with waves to ride all year round. Some of the best known breaks are in the Mamanucas, where you’ll find Cloudbreak – one of the best lefts in the world, Restaurants and Namotu. On the Coral Coast, Natadola is a much kinder place to surf, as it is a beach break, and a lovely spot to learn to surf. For kayaking adventures, Beqa Lagoon is one of the most incredible places to paddle, and for whitewater rafting, the Navua River is a great option.
FRENCH POLYNESIA
The legend of Teahupo‘o strikes fear into the hearts of all but the best surfers, many of whom have come off second best on the sharp coral reef under the powerful, breaking waves. If the swell is up, jump on a boat from the village and sit in the perfect spot to watch surfers tackle the beast. Elsewhere in Tahiti, Papara also has good surf.
Foiling fun
The hydro foiling phenomenon has really taken off at lot of these locations with names like Kai Lenny leading the way. Surfers cut through waves on something akin to a winged keel, the board elevated above the surface and going much faster than a normal surfboard. Fascinating to watch.

FRENCH POLYNESIA
Cruise around the turquoise blue waters of Bora Bora or Rangiroa and the underwater world will come alive. Swim with sting rays and sharks in Bora Bora’s idyllic lagoon, and in Rangiroa, go for a drift snorkel or dive in the famous Tiputa Pass, with a natural aquarium alive with fish of all sizes and colours. The islands of Fakarava and Maupiti are other aquatic treasures, with eye piercingly beautiful scenery and sea life to swim with.
HAWAI‘I
Swimming with turtles is a special experience and you find them all around Hawai‘i. On O‘ahu see them off Waikīkī or at Shark’s Cove on the North Shore, while on Kaua‘i, Lydgate Beach Park is a lovely, protected space. On Maui, Molokini Crater offers world-class diving and snorkelling. On the island of Hawai‘i, take it up a notch by doing a night snorkel or dive with manta rays off the Kona coast … a one of a kind experience.
FIJI
For diving and snorkelling, Fiji shines with so many exquisite lagoons, reefs, and other dive locations. Places like Rainbow Reef, Astrolabe Reef – with its extraordinary diving, and Beqa Lagoon is home to the Shark Reef Marine Reserve, where you can fraternise with eight different shark species. To swim with manta rays*, head for 'Manta Ray Passage' – the shallow channel between Drawaqa and Naviti islands in the Yasawas.

FIJI
While many of think about the beaches first, Fiji has a lot of options for hiking, whether on the main island of Viti Levu, with its heavily forested interior with rivers and waterfalls, or on some of the other islands. Lavena Coastal Walk is a 10km walk along the coastline of Taveuni covering beaches, forest and finishing at a secret waterfall. On Viti Levu, hike to the top of Mount Batilamu and visit the Koroyanitu National Heritage Park, or do a multi-day cross-island hike with Talonoa Treks to villages, cloud forests and waterfalls. More on-land fun can be found at the Limestone Caves of Sawa I Ra, accessed via a boat from the Blue Lagoon.
HAWAI‘I
There are many amazing hikes in the Hawaiian islands, with the Volcanoes National Park on the island of Hawai‘i home to some of the most interesting. Walk the Devastation Trail or tackle the challenging Crater Rim Trail which takes you around the edge of the Kīlauea summit caldera, showcasing dramatic views, steam vents, and amazing plant life. The rainforest-framed Nāhuku Lava Tube is a more grounded walk, through a 500-year-old lava tube, and one of the most popular, the Diamond Head Crater Trail on O‘ahu, must now be booked ahead. A hidden gem, which locals love, is the Ehukai Pillbox Hike at Sunset. The short, sharp walk up is worth the views over Pipeline and Sunset.
TASMANIA
The Apple Isle is heaven for hikers, with myriad walks exploring pristine wilderness, wild coastlines, and rugged mountains. Discover Maria Island on a multi-day walk discovering its past, hike up iconic Cradle Mountain with stays in historic huts, experience the multi-day Three Capes Track on the Tasman Peninsula, and on the wukalina Walk join palawa
(Tasmanian Aboriginal) guides tracing ancient footsteps along the larapuna coastline around the Bay of Fires.
MADEIRA, PORTUGAL
This island surprises on so many levels, rising up from the Atlantic Ocean off the coasts of Europe and Africa. Madeira has a network of hiking trails, on levadas (irrigation channels) that stretch over 2100 kms. Go in spring or autumn, and the trails are lined with wildflowers.
