The term ‘bucket list’, especially pertaining to travel, became popular again thanks to the 2007 movie The Bucket List starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. It made us all think about where we want to go at least once in our lifetimes. And possibly, who with.
In this issue, we are looking at places that travellers long to visit to warm up after a long winter, or just to escape the day-to-day for some sun, sea, history, culture or adventure.
Sip a Limoncello or an Aperol Spritz on the Amalfi Coast. Walk through The Siq to Petra’s astonishing Treasury building on a dusty, rocky road that has been there for thousands of years. Marvel at the ingenuity of those who created The Pyramids, take in the eye-popping beauty of Santorini and the history that is represented in the stone columns of the Parthenon. Frolic among the fish and relax in total luxury on Lizard Island, ride an iconic train or a private jet enroute to your dream destination with Abercrombie & Kent. Or luxuriate in a stunning
villa at Patina Maldives, where your first decision of the day is whether to swim in the turquoise lagoon or in your private pool.

Our 300 experienced agents – all with a minimum of 10 years travel under their belts – know that every client is different, with individual travel styles and tastes. From pristine beaches and turquoise seas to historic sites, ancient cities and emerging destinations, we all have that bucket list of places we long to visit in our lifetime.
Here are some of the places we would love to tick off.
When it comes to making an entrance, surely nothing can top walking up the narrow stone path chiselled through pink-hued cliffs to The Siq, where AlKhazneh, the Treasury, reveals itself in all its breathtaking grandeur. The Treasury is the best-known site at Petra, a 39-metre high façade carved into a sandstone wall thousands of years ago as a tomb for one of the Nabataean kings. There are 500 tombs here, and 800 archaeological sites. But Petra is not the only jewel in Jordan’s crown, the Mars-like desert landscape of Wadi Rum is a magical mystical tour where you can sleep in a Bedouin camp or go for
a camel ride. Float in the mineral-rich waters of the Dead Sea, and explore the exciting and culturally fascinating city of Amman.
Ah, the Amalfi. A drop-dead-dreamy destination we all covet, imagining ourselves sipping decadent cocktails on cliffside terraces dripping with bougainvillea and wisteria, looking out over the storied Mediterranean Sea. This celebrity-clad strip of coast is home to postcard-pretty Positano, five-star hotels spilling down the cliffside in a landslide of pastel luxury and sun lovers basking on balconies and beach sides. Visits to Amalfi and Ravello are a must, as is Sorrento, the gateway to the Amalfi Coast. History buffs will want to stroll through historic Pompeii, and the island of Capri has a hypnotic allure, with much to see including the Blue Grotto, Monte Solaro, the natural Arch, Gardens of Augustus and Villas of Tiberius.
Dramatic jungles, stunning beaches, a fascinating cultural heritage and some of the most flavourpacked food on earth are just part of Sri Lanka’s charm. Colombo, the island’s capital, boasts an eclectic mix of colonial architecture, modern skyscrapers and bustling street markets, while ancient city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, Anuradhapura, features impressive Buddhist stupas and ruins. Other must-visit destinations are the charming coastal city of Galle, the ancient rock temple of Sigiriya, and Nuwara Eliya, a pretty hillcountry town dotted with colonial-era architecture and scenic tea gardens. The country is home to many national parks, such as Yala and Udawalawe, where visitors can see elephants, leopards, and other wildlife.
Sigiriya Lion's Rock, Sri LankaAn enchanted land brimming with intriguing mythology, the eastern Himalayan country of Bhutan measures its progress by Gross National Happiness, prioritising holistic development beyond economics by placing an emphasis on the wellbeing and happiness of its citizens. Visitors to Bhutan will certainly be left smiling after experiencing the country’s unique culture in its ancient monasteries and colourful festivals, and indulging in spicy, flavourful Bhutanese cuisine, washed down with butter tea. Enjoy Bhutan’s breathtaking natural beauty hiking, biking, and rafting through pristine forests with a private guide. Experience happiness in style at one of several high-end hotels including the sublime fivestar sanctuaries of Amankora Resort, COMO Uma Paro and Taj Tashi. For a more rustic experience, the Tiger’s Nest Resort overlooks the stunning Taktshang Monastery, which clings to a rocky cliff-face in the mountains above Paro.
Home to forts and frankincense-fragranced air, souks and Sinbad, the Sultanate of Oman is something of a fairy tale destination, offering visitors a perfect combination of culture, nature, and pampering. One of the friendliest countries in all of Arabia, its rugged deep-water fjords, dramatic swathes of sandy desert, shimmering seas and pretty coral reefs make Oman an adventurer’s paradise. Experience ancient culture and traditions as you explore historic forts, mosques and souks, visit remote villages, take a private dhow cruise along the breathtaking coast, and enjoy Omani cuisine – a delicious blend of Arab, Indian, and African flavours. Oman is bursting with opulent resorts such as the village inspired Six Senses Zighy Bay, which has a rather unusual entry – via zipline.
The sun-drenched, history-laden islands of Greece are on everyone’s bucket list, and with good reason. Who wouldn’t want to go to Santorini, wandering through the higgledy-piggledy alleys among whitewashed shops and hotels that cling to the sides of a caldera that is said to house the legend that is Atlantis. In Mykonos, stroll through Little Venice, relax at ever-sotrendy beach clubs and munch on fresh calamari at the water’s edge. Island hop to Paros, Naxos, Milos, Crete, Corfu, Rhodes. And spend time in Athens, just soaking in the history that is all around you, no site more important or dramatic than the Acropolis. Visits to Olympia – home of the Olympic Games – and the spectacular Meteora with its clifftop monasteries should also be on the itinerary.
This seafaring nation has 1192 islands in 26 atolls, scattered like sparkling jewels across 871 kilometres of the Indian Ocean. The dreamy images you see in brochures and magazines of crystal clear azure water lapping white sand beaches on tiny palm-topped islands are just the beginning of what is a stay in paradise. Under the surface, the reefs abound with marine life, with 1000 species of fish, including manta rays and whale sharks. Divers and surfers are also in heaven here. If you can bring yourself to leave your idyllic island haven, you can do tours to the capital, Malé, or visit local islands such as Thulusdhoo –known for its traditional bodu beru (big drums), or the dhoni (boat) building islands of Huraa, Alifushi and Gulhi.
A land of timeless allure and mystery, the sights, sounds, and smells of Egypt will awaken your senses and transport you back in time. The Pyramids of Giza, the Valley of the Kings, Abu Simbel and the temples of Luxor and Karnak are just a few of the country’s ancient treasures. The long-awaited Grand Egyptian Museum – the largest archaeological museum complex in the world with more than 100,000 artifacts including King Tut’s entire treasure collection – will open late in 2023. But there is more to Egypt than just its history. Its vibrant culture, bustling bazaars, and mouth-watering cuisine will tantalise your tastebuds and capture your heart. A fantastic way of exploring the hidden gems of Egypt is on a Nile cruise, visiting ancient temples and tombs while enjoying indulgent onboard amenities.
Africa is a continent of immense diversity, boasting a range of landscapes and cultures. From the streets of mystical Marrakesh to the cosmopolitan vibe of Cape Town, African cities are brimming with character and charm. South Africa's wine route and regions like Stellenbosch and Franschhoek offer a cultural heritage as rich as their reserves. The majestic Victoria Falls, the stunning savannahs of the Serengeti, and the surreal sight of Etosha National
Park's vast salt pan in Namibia are just a few of Africa’s awe-inspiring natural wonders. Spotting the "Big Five" on a game drive is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, while the annual migration in Kenya's Maasai Mara is a spectacle like no other. Treks through the lush gorilla forests of Uganda and Rwanda offer a rare opportunity to witness the gentle giants in their natural habitat. And for those seeking relaxation, Zanzibar’s dazzling beaches will leave you spellbound. Whatever your travel style, this extraordinary continent is the stuff of dreams.
From little things, big things grow. Take Abercrombie & Kent (A&K), for instance. In the early 1960s, Geoffrey Kent and his parents established a luxury adventure company in Africa and were intent on doing things a little differently. They started out with a vision as big as the African savannah, a remodelled Bedford truck and a sterling silver ice bucket, ensuring sundowners were always enjoyed in style. And 60 years later, they still are.
Across seven continents and seven oceans, Abercrombie & Kent has set the benchmark for experiential travel.
Today, A&K creates inspiring and memorable adventures in more than 100 countries – on all seven continents and on all seven seas. Choose a Tailor-Made journey designed just for you and your partner, family or friends, but with private A&K guides, vehicles and drivers. Small group journeys allow you to make new friends as you travel in the world’s most spectacular and awe-inspiring places with a small group of like-minded people. Ride the rails on luxury trains around the world. Cruise in five-star comfort on the rivers and oceans. Fly on a private jet journey, or enjoy the freedom that a super yacht provides.
No matter which style of travel you choose with A&K, you will be looked after with attentive, personal service, authentic local expertise with multi-lingual and well-travelled guides, each with the ability to bring local attractions to life, as well of providing insider access that is more than just cutting queues. A&K go the extra mile whenever possible, taking guests to the heart of a destination in extraordinary style and comfort.
In what is a perfect match, A&K Travel Group purchased two luxury vessels in 2022, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony. The elegant, fivestar ships are undergoing a major refurbishment and will begin cruising the seas in mid-2023, under the awardwinning Crystal Cruises brand name. This prestigious combination of leading brands will harmoniously blend the impeccable service Crystal is known for, with the exemplary curated itineraries that A&K creates.
For a more personal, private experience, consider a canal cruise in Europe. A&K handpick hotel barges cruising along Europe's scenic canals and rivers accompanied by fine food and wine.

A vibrant cloud of yellow clears to reveal ecstatic faces smeared in streaks of electric blue, green and red. If you land in India during the ancient Hindu spring festival of Holi, timed to the last full moon of the Hindu lunar month of Phalguna (generally falling in late February or early March), be sure to pack a spare change of clothes, because nobody escapes this psychedelic free-for-all.
One of the most significant festivals in Hinduism, the annual ritual begins with a bonfire to symbolise the triumph of good over evil, followed by the vibrant riot of powder paint and coloured water that welcomes spring and new beginnings. The one of a kind festival is an opportunity for people to release their inhibitions, and with the gods said to turn a blind eye during the festivities, unleash them they do.
What better way to immerse yourself in a destination than by celebrating one of the world’s bucket list cultural, creative or sporting festivals and events.

Then follow in their tracks, riding the same climbs as you soak up the breathtaking mountain scenery and indulge in local culinary delights.
Raise a glass of champagne to champion players as you nibble fresh strawberries bathed in fresh whipping cream from your enviable Centre Court seats at the world’s most prestigious tennis Grand Slam, Wimbledon. With sun, sand, surf, wildlife and cultural experiences, here are some of Australia’s bucket list destinations.
The water is a kaleidoscope of colour, as fish in shades of blue and orange and red and yellow and green shimmy past. Then there is the coral, with its various shapes and hues just adding to the beauty. This is the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef, the jewel in Australia’s crown, and on top of most travel wish lists. You can swim or snorkel or dive in it, sail over it or fly over it to marvel at the sheer number of reefs spread out like a type of aquatic suburbia. Better still, you can stay at Lizard Island, the northernmost resort on the 2,300km reef, so you can frolic in and on the water all day, every day during your tropical escape.
Lizard Island has 40 opulent rooms, suites and villas with personalised service and exquisite dining. Laze on private beaches, swim with turtles, visit the coral reef research station, go for a hike up to Cook’s Look, and take full advantage of your access to the world’s largest coral reef system.

The Wintjiri Wiru light showThe Kimberley. Even just saying the name feels exotic and adventurous. From the ancient and beguiling Bungle Bungle Range in Purnululu National Park to the marine wonders of the Buccaneer Archipelago with incredible tides and horizontal waterfalls, the rough and rugged Gibb River Road and Mitchell Plateau, Tunnel Creek, Windjana Gorge and Geikie Gorge near Fitzroy Crossing, Broome’s striking Cable Beach, pearl history and the Staircase to the Moon, and the many ancient rock art sites that are among the oldest on Earth. Berkeley River LodgeKangaroo Island in South Australia has one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia and it really is a hidden gem. Totally hidden. Accessed through a cave from another beach, you wouldn’t know Stoke’s Bay was even there, but it is, and it is idyllic. Australia’s third largest island, Kangaroo Island has something for everyone. Nature lovers will be in their element, seeing the 1000 or so Australian Fur Seals at Seal Bay, the longnosed fur seals near Admiral’s Arch at the windswept Flinders Chase National Park, koalas, echidnas, the darker and smaller Kangaroo Island kangaroos, dolphins and a vast array of birdlife. As for scenery, Remarkable Rocks live up to their name and Vivonne Bay is striking –check out the view from the pier.
Lord Howe Island is a slice of paradise where time slows, nature presides and cares disappear on the sea breeze. Do a glass bottomed-boat tour, snorkel, scuba dive or swim in the eye-wateringly beautiful lagoon, home to the southernmost coral reef in the world. Go on some of the seven hikes on the island – from short strolls like Little Island to the extreme Mt Gower day walk that you can only do with a guide. Jump off the jetty, swim at Ned’s beach among darting fish, kayak or SUP on aquamarine water. Bikes will be your mode of transport, just watch out for the curious woodhens crossing the road, they have been saved from extinction.
While the white curved scythe of Wineglass Bay is its best known feature, Freycinet National Park has a lot more to offer. The Park, taking up most of the Freycinet Peninsula on Tasmania’s east coast, is a perfect summer break for those who don’t like it stiflingly hot. With its postcard-pretty beaches, the water beckons for swimming, kayaking or snorkelling, or there are boat and kayak tours you can do to take in more of the landscape. The walk up to the Wineglass Bay lookout is around 1.4km each way, but is well worth the effort as it takes you through The Hazards, a line of granite peaks. For a more challenging walk, Mount Amos will be a thigh burner.
Saffire Freycinet is undoubtedly one of the best lodges in Australia and is beautifully positioned for views across the bay to The Hazards. Everything about Saffire is stunning, from its Private pavilions, Signature Suites and Luxury Suites to its range of complimentary experiences, including an oyster tasting in the water

Cavorting with the giants of the deep in the aquamarine waters of Western Australia’s Ningaloo Reef is a oncein-a-lifetime experience that we all yearn to do. Whale sharks come to this part of the world between March and August for a banquet of plankton, and being in the water with these majestic gentle giants is unforgettable. Ningaloo is the largest fringing coral reef in Australia, off the Coral Coast, and is home to a variety of other marine creatures from manta rays to turtles and dugongs. Cape Range National Park, together with Ningaloo, forms part of the 604,500ha Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area – the contrast between the two is surreal. Whereas Ningaloo is turquoise blue and crystal clear waters, Cape Range consists of 60 kms of pristine beaches, rugged limestone ranges and deep canyons.
To go off grid, in a national park, is something many of us crave, and at Sal Salis, luxury is still on the menu. Sal Salis is located in Cape Range National Park, where the outback meets the reef. Relax in your eco-luxe tent’s hammock with a good book, or go kayaking, paddleboarding or snorkelling. Contact your Travel Advisor »
