ADVENTURERS These men show how traveling and a healthy lifestyle go hand in hand
I STARTED JOINING TRIATHLONS AS A DARE SIX YEARS AGO. One of my mountain biking buddies was convincing us to join him. At that time, the last thing I wanted to do was go out dressed in spandex, until another member of the group tried it and told us his stories about the race. We all signed up for an off-road triathlon called X-Tri in Laiya, Batangas and had only three months to train. The race itself was the most difficult thing I had ever done, but I was hooked from then on. WE GET TO TRAVEL A LOT FOR TRIATHLONS. Most local triathlons are held outside Manila, in Subic, Batangas, Cebu and Bohol. But the farthest I’ve traveled for a triathlon is Las Vegas, Nevada. In 2011, my teammate and I joined the Ironman 70.3 World Championships. MY NEXT RACE IS IN MAUI for the X-Terra World Championships this October. In May 2014, I will be back in Hawaii for Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Kona. THE MOST PHYSICALLY DEMANDING TRIP I’VE BEEN ON WAS A THREE-DAY BIKE TOUR OF CEBU which I completed with Bugoy Bikers, a bike tour outfit based in Cebu run by Jens Funk, a German. We rode from early morning to sunset through mountain passes, unpaved roads, in the rain and under the noontime sun. It was challenging but fun. MY ADVENTURE BUCKET LIST includes mountain biking in Siquijor, Guimaras, Busuanga, and the Cordillera mountain range. I’d love to join the La Ruta de los Conquistadores, a multi-stage mountain bike race in Costa Rica, and the British Columbia Bike Race. I’d also love to hike and bike in Nepal, explore Machu Picchu, and backpack across Eastern Europe.

TRAVEL DE-STRESSES ME. I travel at least three times a year, both locally and internationally. I usually squeeze travel in between my most hectic months, and of course, during Christmas and New Year. I LOVE TRAVELING ALONE. Travel is usually my “me” time. I want to discover places, and sometimes, I want to get lost and find out how to get back to the hotel. I ALWAYS FIND TIME TO WORK OUT TO KEEP MYSELF FIT AND HEALTHY. Even when I’m traveling, I make sure I know where the gym is. That’s why I chose Fitness First because they have a branch almost everywhere I go to. I have a fitness trainer because I’m usually lazy when I work out alone. Sometimes, I invite friends who are serious about working out. I usually start with some cardio exercises (treadmill or rowing), then free weights for muscle toning. AUSTRALIA IS CONDUCIVE TO A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE. I get to walk around downtown Sydney or along Bondi Beach – that’s cardio, the Aussie way. STARTED DETOXING LAST MONTH. I discovered Detoxify Bar while going around Eastwood and I was convinced to try detox juices along with their organic food. Now I’m addicted to it. My favorite is the Red Vegan juice (my after-gym drink), a combination of apple, carrot, lemon, beet and cucumber.

I BRING MY HEALTHY MUST-HAVES WHEN I TRAVEL. I have my anti oxidant vitamins, adequate doses of Vitamin C, and of course, fruits and milk. Every time I arrive in a place, I go to the supermarket to buy fruits (oranges or apples) and a liter of milk which I drink every morning and evening.
