THRILL SEEKERS These sports enthusiasts discover the world’s most active cities.
I EXPLORE A NEW CITY BY RUNNING. It’s part of my training, and it’s a good opportunity to see places I normally don’t see. MY MOST MEMORABLE TRIP WAS TO NEW ZEALAND because “The Lord of the Rings,” my favorite movie, was filmed there. We raced in the same place where it was shot. The countryside is so beautiful. MY DREAM IS TO TRAIN IN KENYA because the best long-distance runners come from there. Also, it’s best to train in a high altitude. THE LAST PLACE I TRAVELED TO WAS NEW YORK, for the New York marathon last November. The race was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy, but we stayed anyway. MY MOST INTERESTING MARATHON WAS THE MARATHON DU MEDOC IN BORDEAUX. The race route was through the vineyards, and there were no sports drinks or water— only wine, which we drank before, during, and after the race. The fulfillment there was in crossing the finishing line—with fun. It wasn’t about competing.

CALIFORNIA IS ONE OF THE BEST PLACES FOR SPORTS. There are facilities, sports programs and institutes to help athletes excel. The weather is great, and people are always on the move and on the lookout for the next sporting challenge. I just love the vibe there. I REALLY ENJOYED SYDNEY. I was there to cover the Olympics in 2000. I loved the beach volleyball competitions amidst the awesome vibe of Bondi beach, and I loved running around Darling Harbor. I will always cherish my climb up the Sydney Harbor Bridge. I’M REALLY INTO GOLF NOW. I’m hoping to go to Johannesburg this year to play the “Extreme 19th” at the Legend Golf and Safari Resort. This is the wildest par three golf hole in the world. You tee off on top of a mountain— accessible by helicopter—and it takes 30 seconds for your ball to land. I REALLY ENJOYED TAURANGA IN NEW ZEALAND. We stayed at a charming place beside Mount Maunganui, with a fantastic view of the Bay of Plenty. Bikers and bikes dot the bay area which has a lot of cafes and restaurants ready to serve healthy meals. Photographer: Bryan Arevalo

Patricia’s most adventurous food trip was in Beijing where she ate centiped es, worms, and “all sorts of things you never thought was edible.”
