We’re celebrating this sensory season in our cover story, where you’ll read about food festivals, art and music festivals, cultural festivals, and everything in between. Hoosiers are celebrating hot dogs, bacon, popcorn, and pierogis—and we’ll share how you can join in on the fun.
ON THE COVER
Welcome to summertime—a season you can experience through the sounds, tastes, and smells of the dozens of festivals and special events taking place all around the state. We’re celebrating this sensory season in our cover story, where you’ll read about food festivals, art and music festivals, cultural festivals, and everything in between. Hoosiers are celebrating hot dogs, bacon, popcorn, and pierogis—and we’ll share how you can join in on the fun. Summer kicks off sunflower season, and U-pick flower farms are popping up all over Indiana. They’ve become wildly popular destinations, not just for great photo opps, but also for special events and family-fun activities. Our “Fun is in Bloom” feature highlights top spots around the state where you can pick and enjoy and all types of flowers, especially the sunflower. Indiana’s scenic byways cover more than 1,000 miles of Hoosier roadways, and our story on them will take you on a journey through the heart of Amish country, Richmond’s historic “Depot District,” the canal town of Metamora, downtown Indianapolis, along with other spots like a historic pharmacy and fascinating museums. Also in this issue, you’ll learn about fun and new happenings at Conner Prairie and special celebratory events surrounding the 100th anniversary of the Buskirk-Chumley Theater in Bloomington. We’ve included our regular sections—Destination, Outdoor, Culinary, and Arts—where you’ll get even more ideas on great destinations to explore and enjoy around Indiana. And as always, be sure and check out our website, travelindiana.com, for even more trip ideas. Happy and safe travels!

This scene plays out every weekend during festival season in the Hoosier state. And while there’s more to Indiana festivals than just the good eats, food is definitely one of the main attractions of the state’s festivals. “Lots [of people] go for the food,” says Doug Weisheit, Indiana State Festivals Association Coordinator. In fact, several of the state’s most popular festivals are based around—and named after—food. Located on the southern shores of Lake Michigan, the city of

Always call ahead to ensure right dates and times. Have a safety plan, and plan to find others you are with if you get separated,” he advises. And last but not least, “Know where you are going. For example, Madison, Indiana vs. Madison County; Knox County vs. Knox, Indiana; Spencer County vs. Spencer, Indiana….to just name a few.”

FESTIVALS & EVENTS

The City of Carmel hosts more than 100 public events throughout the year. When temperatures warm and the days are longer crowds gather for Carmel’s most popular outdoor festivals and events. New to the roster of summer events, Brews on the Boulevard (July 30) brings nearly 20 local breweries, wineries and distilleries to Midtown Plaza for an evening of tasting and sampling some of central Indiana’s most unique and flavorful beers and wines. Visitors can stroll Monon Greenway and Monon Boulevard and enjoy all that Midtown has to offer including a newly turfed plaza, cornhole, ping-pong, water features and easy access on bike or on foot. The event is free and open to the public but sampling requires a ticket ranging from $30 (pre-event) to $35 (day of) and $40 (VIP). The annual favorite event for carenthusiasts, Artomobilia (August 27) rolls back to the Arts & Design District in late August. One of the truly more unique events of the season, Artomobilia brings nearly 500 collectors and auto-devotees to one of Carmel’s premier locations. With the district closed to traffic for the event, visitors can take their time and stroll the car-lined streets while

also having access to art galleries, eclectic dining options and specialty retail stores. When summer starts winding down, festivities continue into the fall. Carmel’s Arts & Design District, a designated Indiana Cultural District, is home to nine art galleries making it the ideal setting for art-focused events. Carmel on Canvas (September 16-18) runs for three days and includes a two-day plein air painting competition and more than $13,000 in prize money for the artists. Cap off a weekend of art with music! As Carmel on Canvas wraps up on Sunday, locals and visitors can make their way to the Old Town neighborhood adjacent to the Arts & Design District. Since its first year in 2014, Carmel PorchFest (September 18) continues to grow; featuring local talent from many different genres playing from the porches of one of the city’s coolest neighborhoods. Maps with the bands and porches listed are handed out upon entry so plan on bringing chairs and friends and spending the day porch-hopping. The Carmel International Arts Festival (September 24-25) brings more than 100 juried artists in an array of media to Carmel’s Main Street. In addition to incredible art, festival visitors can enjoy live performances throughout the day on two stages by local musicians and dancers from many different genres. The final festival before the city gears up for the holidays is Oktoberfest. (September 30) Carmel City Center is host to this family-friendly and music-filled event with a German theme.

Retail and restaurants open their doors and windows to serve food and drinks and be prepared to dance to polka until after the sun sets.
Let’s Bike! Carmel continues to encourage the use of bicycles for not only leisure and sport but also as a mode of daily transportation. With more than 200 miles of trails and paths in the city and an ongoing commitment to providing and maintaining these multi-use trails, it is easy to see why Carmel has been designated a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists and Places for Bikes. Bike Carmel, presented by IU Health North, has programming throughout most of the year including events and activities for families and riders of all abilities. The inaugural Roundabout Ride kicked off in 2021 and will take place again this year on September 17. This event starts and ends in Midtown and features both 25- and 50- mile route options. At the conclusion of the ride a meal will be provided by Sun King Distillery in Midtown. Visit Bike Carmel on the City’s website for all events and programming.

Step Into the Story AT CONNER PRAIRIE story by GLENDA WINDERS

Even if you’ve been to Conner Prairie more times than you can count, this year there are lots of reasons to go back. Spark!Lab, opening in August, was developed by the Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation, and celebrates the process of innovation. With the feel of an inventor’s workshop, it will give visitors an opportunity to learn by creating. “We feel that when people get the opportunity to have different materials and opportunities to solve real-world problems through invention, the possibilities are endless,” said Katie Warthan, Director of Marketing and Brand Strategy. “We’ll provide the ideas and the
materials and then let them go from there.” Smithsonian Spark!Lab staff prototype activities, and Network museums create their own challenges to highlight invention in their community and history. Some of the challenges include designing a soundscape, creating a way to clean plastic out of waterways, and inventing a vehicle. The prompts will change often so that no two visits will be alike. The museum will also be spotlighting some young inventors as well as showcasing some of the inventions in their collection.
DESTINATION
The Sunflower Fields that first opened last year as a way to utilize the fields on the property year-round will return in August, too. The museum will continue to have the corn mazes it has had in the past, but now they’re focusing on flowers as a way to talk about pollinators and the influence they have in the life of plants. The 3-acre field will contain thousands of blooms and three different variations as well as a path where visitors can walk through it and explore — an ideal spot for weddings and photo ops. In collaboration with Smithsonian Gardens, and the Smithsonian Institute Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), Habitat will open in September with insects starring in an opportunity to better understand how they interact with plants. The idea was first created on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and it’s a perfect fit for Conner Prairie. The plan is for people to better understand the life cycles and how everyone plays a role in the condition of plants, insects and animals. Visitors will explore how the flora and fauna survive
and thrive and look at the role humans play in their existence — and sometimes their extinction. The popular Jupiter Flights Balloon Festival that debuted last year will return in September to celebrate all things flight. Colorful hot-air balloons — some of them in playful shapes — will join the museum’s permanent helium-filled tethered balloon, which lifts guests to 377 feet and provides a spectacular view of the city. This largest balloon festival in the state will offer two nights of balloon glows and two events at sunrise that will challenge pilots to land on predetermined targets. Other programs related to flight are also in the works. October’s Headless Horseman Festival is now in its 39th year, with the Headless Horseman Hayride being everyone’s favorite part. As the wagon rolls through the grounds, the horseman shows up at surprising moments. Coupled with lighting, audio and special effects, these encounters will provide everyone with a delicious but safe scare. Three corn mazes will cater to whatever your fright level is. Both a shorter and longer, less-scary maze will be open during the day, while a haunted corn maze is set to scare the wits out of those with stronger constitutions. Fun Bloom U-Pick flower farms around the state — especially those with sunflowers — have become wildly popular story by ELIZABETH GR ANGER

runing shears. Bucket or basket. Maybe bug spray. Recommended gear for visiting U-Pick farms, especially for U-Pick flowers. For decades Hoosiers have picked fruits and vegetables at local farms. In recent years, U-Pick flowers, too. The sunflower’s popularity is soaring. And in recent months, the world has learned that the sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine. In Indiana, there are two sunflower seasons. Typically the flower blooms in July, but some farmers delay planting so theirs bloom around Labor Day.
Spencer Farm in Noblesville began as a U-Pick strawberry farm 40 years ago. Then came additional fruits and vegetables. Three years ago they planted sunflowers; they’ll be blooming in July. “Our customers are constantly wanting new things,” said Kyle Spencer. “So we decided to add a little more to our U-Pick season.” Conner Prairie in Fishers has sunflowers. They’re especially popular for weddings. It’s here you’ll discover a field of beauty with more than three acres to explore. Enjoy thousands of blooms as you walk through path and find the perfect photo opportunities.

In Lafayette, Exploration Acres grows 24 varieties and invites guests to walk four miles of sprawling paths through a maze. Wea Creek Orchard, also in Lafayette, will host its Sunflower Festival July 29-31. Stuckey Farm near Sheridan plants sunflowers late – on purpose – so they bloom in early September. Thus their Labor Day festival Sept. 2-5 and Sept. 9-11. Stuckey’s Jordan Pierce says the idea for sunflowers came during a visit to farms along the East Coast. “We definitely need to bring that to Indiana,” he said at the time. He says Stuckey was one of the first farms to do a sunflower festival in Indiana. Visitor reaction was “insane.” “We had no idea so many people would be so interested.”
There are now 28 varieties of sunflowers ranging from the small (2 feet tall) Teddy Bear to the big (15 feet tall) Mammoth and Skyscraper. This year a Tiny Town is being created in the Teddy Bear section. Stuckey’s is teaming up with the county’s tourism bureau to encourage local businesses to add their tiny buildings to the town. Beasley’s Orchard in Danville offers U-Pick sunflowers with a festival on two weekends in late July. The orchard stays open later during the festival to allow for photos during what agritourism manager Jim Finley calls “the golden hour.” Dogs are welcome. In Fort Wayne it’s Salomon Farm Park. A few of its 170 acres are in sunflowers but there’s a lot of green
space with a weekly farmers market and farm animals. Farmhouse Flowers 414 in Leesburg offers U-Pick flowers and fresh bouquets. And at the Jones Flower/Pumpkin Farm in Milton more than 50 varieties of U-Pick flowers include snapdragon, zinnia, cosmos and dahlia. Special events include U-Pick sunsets. And yes, sunflowers. The Barn at Helm in Williamsburg has long grown corn and soybeans. Eight years ago they added flowers and now grow more than 80 varieties of blooms. Including sunflowers. This is the fourth year of Flower Farm Friday Music Nights with live outdoor concerts on the farm beginning July 29. Golliher’s Farm in Cambridge City boasts of one million
sunflowers in yellows, oranges and reds, and 75,000 zinnias. In addition to the flowers, the farm store sells individual cuts of meat, eggs, vegetables and other local foods. Amazing Fall Fun in Waterloo offers U-Pick sunflowers with other blooms. They call it the Field-toVase Sunflower Experience. It’s also got the state’s largest corn maze, and a mini maze called the Fairy Tale Trail, complete with a fairy tale, for little ones. Their Sunflower Festival is Sept. 2-4 and Sept. 9-11. Fall is the busy time at Cornucopia Farm near Scottsburg. There’s the pumpkin patch, corn maze, and soybean maze. And sunflowers. “Our Sunflower Experience is on tar-

get for this year,” co-owner Linda Baird says. For Sept. 9-11 and Sept. 16-18. Date Night in the sunflower field is Sept. 15. The city of La Porte takes sunflower celebration to grand heights. Its Sept. 17 Sunflower Fair offers more than 100 craft and nonprofit vendors in the downtown area. It includes a home-grown sunflower growing contest. In Westville, just ten minutes from downtown Valparaiso, is Coburg Flower Depot. Here you’ll find a U-pick farm on three acres, with 50 varieties of flowers.
Indiana’s own French Lick Resort has earned a spot on the “Top 25 Historic Hotels of America Most Magnificent Gardens List.” Between their two resort properties, you’ll find 40 different varieties of flowering perennials, and 17 different varieties of summer annuals each year. Roughly 11,000 summer annuals are planted throughout many flowerbeds, hanging baskets, and planters. Guests can learn more during events hosted at West Baden Springs Hotel, including West Baden Gardening Guidance and Fall into Garden. Dollie’s Farm in Franklin specializes in lavender with more than 80 other flower varieties, including 17 kinds of sunflowers. In
Hope, White Diamond Lavender Farm not only grows three different varieties of lavender, but they also host educational events to teach the community about benefits of lavender products, and how you can grow them yourself. Additional flower fields include Wild Blooms U Pick Flower Farm in Wabash, Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area in Syracuse, Anderson Flower Farm in Frankfort, Mossy Acres Flower Farm in Flat Rock, Rave and Crow Farm in Whitestown, Driving Wind Berry Farm in Indianapolis, Tuttle Orchard in Greenfield, Moore Road Farm in Indianapolis, and P&D Flower Farm in Indianapolis.

story by ANGIE LALLA, Executive Director Cass County Visitors Bureau photos by RICH VOORHEES STUDIO
D
Driving through Cass County, looking at the architecture, it becomes very obvious that the county has a very rich history. Once an important trade route owing to the Michigan Road, Wabash-Erie Canal, and the railroads, Cass County was also a part of the early automotive history of Indiana, namely Bendix and the ReVere. While the automobile boom ended in the early 1900s, the story doesn’t end there. In a world of constant changes, the area has stood the test of time, continuously evolving, while maintaining pride in its history.
The early leaders were entrepreneurial dreamers and wanted to make this a unique place to live. That dream still lives on in the heart of the residents of the cities, towns and farms of Cass County. County residents Matt & Katya Swisher, owners of Bonus Pints, a bar arcade in Logansport, said, “We chose Logansport as the place for our business because we love how our community supports small businesses! It’s a great feeling being able to build a connection with the customers and our children making friends with their families as well. We’re proud to be able to call Logansport home.” Paul Willham and Greg Drake were looking at a five-state radius for a location to settle down and establish their business. They fell in love with the rich history of Logansport. They saw the potential in the building at 630 South 15th Street, bought it, and converted it to Victorian Antiquities and Design, a gallery-like antique shop. Paul has been busy restoring the building to its former glory along with running a very successful business. Greg says small town living is what attracted them to settle down here. Both are very passionate about preserving the history

Born in Logansport, Richard Voorhees relocated when he was 18 years old. He returned after two years to help his father, thinking he would stay for a couple of months. of living in a small town, the possibilities and opportunities to further his craft at his photography studio (Voorheesstudio.com). Wanting to become a contributing member of the community, he has been an active member in various civic organizations. Jason Myers is a very successful artist who has traveled all over the world (myersdesigninc.com & jasonmyersart. com). He grew up on a 180-acre farm and moved away to get an education. But the charm and convenience of small-town living beckoned this world-renowned artist
back home to Logansport, though he still maintains houses in Cabo, Alaska and Zwolle. Kevin Burkett, President & CEO of The Historic State Theatre Preservation Society is a Logansport native who moved away for seventeen years to pursue a career on the East Coast. He wrote a book about Logansport’s history while living in Philadelphia, then jumped at the opportunity to buy the State Theatre and try to save Logansport’s only remaining historic theatre. “It’s one of the best decisions I

ever made. Watching downtown’s evolution and growth over the last eight years, and knowing I played some small part in that, is truly amazing.” For Stacie Angle, owner of People’s Winery, starting a business in Cass County was an easy choice, since, in her words, “My family is here, my friends are here, my heart is here.” Scott Johnson, owner of Black Dog Coffee & Legacy Outfitters got a teaching job here and thought he would stay for a few years. He ended up teaching for 28 years. He made quite a few connections during his stay, and when he decided to start his own business, he wanted it to be here.“I didn’t grow up here, but this became my community.,” Scott said. “I wanted to provide everyone with a gathering space.” What sets Cass County apart are the people, sense of community, and a cohesive effort working together for the betterment of the county. Today, you’ll see people on electric scooters in downtown Logansport, downtown buildings being renovated, and new projects are underway. You’ll see a community where preserving the history is just as important as keeping up with the times.

compelling art. The Upsadaisy gathers Northwest Indiana’s vanguard makers and most discerning connoisseurs, adds a band and a couple of food trucks, and throws an objets d’art party. Every summer weekend in Chesterton is a happening. But be sure to save Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 6-7, for the 63rd annual Chesterton Art Fair, held in beautiful Dogwood Park. For more than half a century, the Chesterton Art Fair has been attracting artists and collectors from across the Midwest and beyond, for a convivial celebration of all that is fine and lovely. More than 80 artists in every conceivable medium will be showcasing their pieces this year, food vendors will keep you well fed, musicians will delight you, and the kids will find activities to appeal to them as well. Free parking.
And there’s more. From 3 to 7 p.m. every Wednesday, the Coffee Creek Farmers Market—only five minutes from Downtown Chesterton—features truly local farmers and specialty food producers, all of whom grow and make what they sell, from organic vegetables to Shiitake mushrooms, from stone-baked loaves to goat milk soap. And from 5 to 9 p.m. on the fourth Saturday of the month through September, the Chesterton Cruise-In invites classic car buffs to showcase their boss wheels and custom rides in the Downtown. The road is closed for comfortable viewing and a DJ’s on hand to spin the platters. Swing by in your own jalopy or just make the scene, for an evening of car talk, chrome, and nostalgia. Come to Chesterton this summer, and be part of an event. Or be part of all of them.

s every traveler knows, the journey is often as much fun as arriving at the destination. And nowhere is this more true than along Indiana’s byways – routes mapped out by the state department of transportation “to preserve, protect, enhance and recognize transportation corridors of unique character.” “Our state’s scenic byways demonstrate the fabric of Indiana through its history, culture and people, in a way that connects the Hoosier spirit of independence and love for the open road,” said Kurt West Garner, co-founder and president of the Historic Michigan Road Association. “Our state byways cover 55 counties, more than 1,000 miles of Hoosier roadways, and countless cities and towns.” The official routes and some more off the beaten path give new meaning and pleasure to the concept of a road trip. The Historic Michigan Road with which Garner is most closely associated was built in the 1830s to connect the Ohio River to Indianapolis and on to Lake Michigan. It opened the state to commerce and settlement and was also a route on the Underground Railroad. Passing through 14 counties, it connects the northern and southern parts of the state, encompassing a variety of communities and topography. In the state capital it goes directly past Newfields (formerly the Indianapolis Museum of Art) in

Indianapolis as well as Crown Hill Cemetery, whose residents range from President Benjamin Harrison, Kurt Vonnegut and James Whitcomb Riley to John Dillinger. The Heritage Trail is a scenic 90mile loop that goes through Elkhart, Goshen, Middlebury, Nappanee, Bristol, Wakarusa and Shipshewana. Since it passes through the heart of Amish country, it provides excellent opportunities to pick up Amish-made furniture and crafts and stop at Amish restaurants for homemade chicken and dumplings topped off with a slice of pie. Summertime visitors on the route will get the added bonus of seeing the Quilt Gardens, more than a million blossoms in 17 gigantic designs. The new Heritage Trail Audio Driving Tour will allow you to live-stream stories, bits of history and suggestions about where to stop as you drive. While you’re here, be sure to take in LaGrange County’s Barn Quilt Tour to check out more than 30 barn-quilt murals that celebrate local culture and the Amish lifestyle. Select one to take home for your barn or garage, or visit artisans who offer leather, textiles, pottery, baskets, jewelry and more. The Historic National Road bisects the state from Richmond in the east to Terre Haute in the west on its route from West Virginia to Illinois. This first federal highway was conceived of by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, who believed a trans-Appalachian road was necessary to unite the young country, and built between 1811 and 1834. Today its six-state path is rich with history, and the Indiana segment is no exception. Following it will allow you to make a stop at the Richmond Art Museum, the gym in Knightstown
where “Hoosiers” was filmed and the Oasis Diner in Plainfield for a tenderloin sandwich. Wrap up the trip with a marshmallow Coke or cherry phosphate at the soda fountain in Lynn’s Pharmacy in Brazil. The nation’s first transcontinental highway, the Lincoln Highway, crosses the country from New York to San Francisco along the route of what today is Interstate 80. The Indiana portion connects Fort Wayne and Hammond and passes through towns such as Churubusco, where you can stop for a “Magic Burger” at the Magic Wand; Kimmell, for a stay in the Victorian Kimmell House Inn; South Bend, to visit the Studebaker National Museum; and Plymouth, to learn about the influence of roads at the Marshall TOP TO BOTTOM: Newfields, a 152-acre campus on the Historic Michigan Road, is home to the Indianapolis Museum of Art. County Museum and Crossroads Center. The Wabash River Scenic Byway snakes along the waterway, giving visitors a real-life lesson in the art, culture and nature of the state as it demonstrates how important rivers were to the area’s development. In West Lafayette be sure to visit Prophetstown State Park and the Tippecanoe Battlefield and Museum. Not to be outdone, the Ohio River has its own scenic byway, 967 miles across three states, with 303 of them in Indiana. Along the way you’ll find antique shops, artists’ studios and farm markets. One of the most inviting spots it passes is Madison, which is alive with river regattas, historic architecture and a vibrant downtown filled with can’t-miss shops and places to eat. Book-lovers will want to pop in to Village Lights
Books, antique-seekers will love the three floors of treasures at WOW What a Find, and hikers will enjoy Clifty Falls State Park. The Whitewater Canal Scenic Byway consists of three loops that trace the settlement of the Whitewater Valley between Lawrenceburg and Hagerstown. The oldest church in Indiana, the Little Cedar Grove Baptist Church, is on this route, as are the canal town of Metamora and the Liberty Depot and Museum in Liberty. Finish off your day with dinner in Richmond’s Historic Depot District, where you can also take in the city’s iconic murals as you unwind. If walking or biking sounds like more fun to you, the Indianapolis Cultural Trail is the place to be. Here eight miles of paved trails connect the city’s three major outdoor public spaces.

Once known as the “Festival Capital of Indiana,” Madison County could still hold that distinction. A celebration of small towns kicks off July 8 and 9, with the Lapel Village Fair and Orestes Festival. During these events you’ll discover that big things can happen in small places! Summer would not be summer without the Kiwanis Madison County 4-H Fair held July 17-23 at Beulah Park in Alexandria. Anderson Black Expo’s Summer Celebration July 29-31 features music, food, and activities at Jackson Park. Soul Fest, August 4-7, will offer fun festivities at Warren Miller Park. Harrah’s
Hoosier Park hosts their annual Dan Patch Festival on August 12. And… don’t miss the Elwood Glass Festival held in Callaway Park. Among numerous other festivities, tours are available to see artists at work on their craft. As summer extends into early fall, Madison County will host lots of fun September events. ParkFest on September 8 will start a busy weekend in Pendleton. Bring your blankets, lawn chairs and picnics to Barnhart Field for an evening of music and activities. Artisans and crafters populate Falls Park as the Pendleton Fall Creek Heritage Fair is held September 9 and 10. Joining the fun
is the annual Downtown Pendleton Fall Festival. Our Native American Heritage is celebrated at the Andersontown Powwow and Indian Market, September 10 and 11, held this year at Beulah Park in Alexandria. Traditional dances are a hallmark of the event, authentic foods are offered, and interesting talks are given on the Native American way of life. Finally, the Frankton Heritage Days, September 16-18, brings the early days of central Indiana to life. Visit visitandersonmadisoncounty. com for all the details!

However, the center piece is a grand amphitheater where there will be several free summer concerts with live music from a variety of artists. Celebrate Buskirk-Chumley Theater’s 100th Birthday with Special Events and Festivals
Bloomington’s Community Theater turns 100 years old this December. As a mainstay of downtown Bloomington for the past century, the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, formerly the “Indiana,” has taken many forms, changed hands, and been inextricably woven into the fabric of this community. The former Indiana Theatre was built in 1922 as a silent movie house by Harry and Nova Vonderschmitt. On opening night, the theater welcomed a crowd of more than 1,300 people who lined up along Kirkwood Avenue to see “The Storm,” starring House Peters. The Indiana quickly became a popular Bloomington nightspot, and eventually became home to legendary performances by Hoagy Carmichael and his band. In 1975, the Vonderschmitt family sold the Indiana to Kerasotes Theatres, Inc. who operated it until 1995. In December of that year, Kerasotes donated the theater to the Bloomington Area Arts Council (BAAC) for use as a performing arts center. Garnering support from the entire community, the BAAC received donations from many prominent citizens, and the “Indiana” was renamed the BuskirkChumley Theater in honor of the local family’s generosity to the project. Since the grand reopening in 1999, the Buskirk-Chumley Theater has been host to a rich variety of films, guest lecturers, and live shows including performances by Arlo Guthrie, John Mellencamp, Richard Thompson, The Indigo Girls, Cowboy Junkies, Andrew Bird, Regina Spektor and many more. The BCT has also become the primary venue for the Lotus World Music Festival, Indiana University’s African American Arts Institute, and Jazz from Bloomington. “Since the Indiana Theatre opened as a movie theater in 1922, it has been a place for the Bloomington community to gather and 94

share artistic experiences together,” says BCT Executive Director Jonah Crismore. “Just as the theater transformed from the Indiana to the Buskirk-Chumley, so did our programming by offering live performances with film. But the core of what we do at the BCT is still providing a nexus and home for the arts in Bloomington, and the community can experience them as one audience.”
In honor of their 100th birthday, the Buskirk-Chumley Theater is kicking off a yearlong community celebration this August that will end summer of 2023. This celebration has been dubbed the BCT100 Neon Centennial, named for the beloved dog bone sign and marquee that have illuminated Kirkwood Ave with its neon lights for decades. Right in the middle of all this excitement will

be a special community event this November, welcoming prominent individuals linked to the theater’s history, including: descendants of key historical figures, individuals who helped preserve and restore the building in the 1990s, current and past volunteers, board members, and staff, and members of the Bloomington arts and culture community. The BCT100 season will feature more BCT Presents events than ever before. The upcoming programming has been curated to appreciate the evolution of Bloomington and Monroe County’s cultural landscape through the lens of the theater’s history. Season programming is supported by four main tent poles: music, film, poetry, & podcasts. Starting this fall, audiences will get to experience silent films released during the theater’s early days, including works by filmmakers whose work would not have traditionally been given recognition during the Vonderschmitt years. In September, Paul D. Miller, aka DJ Spooky, will perform an
original live score for the silent film “Body and Soul.” This film is a masterpiece of the silent screen era, written, directed, and produced by prolific director Oscar Micheaux. Micheaux and his films answered the challenges of racial segregation and provided black moviegoers with an alternative to the mainstream films being produced by a segregated Hollywood. Regarded as a rare work in African American cinematic history, “Body and Soul” boasts biting social commentary on issues of race and gender that went unaddressed by Hollywood for decades and that still resonate today. The BCT will also be featuring silent films such as “The Passion of Joan of Arc” with a live score by L.A. composer George Sarah and a 100th anniversary screening of “Nosferatu,” the first vampire film. Alongside their silent film programming, the BCT will also be presenting its “Hundred Years of Indiana Film” series highlighting films released over the last century with a strong tie to the Hoosier State. All films in the series have a native Hoosier as the
ARTS
director or in a starring role or take place or be set in Indiana. With support from Morgenstern’s Books, the Neon Centennial is going to be an opportunity for the BCT to introduce styles and genres of performance not typically featured on its stage. Some of the poetry programming the community can look forward to includes a live poetry slam competition, similar to a “Battle of the Bands,” judged by professional scholars and poets and commissioned poems on the historic marquee by artists-in-residence inspiring the community throughout the year. In spring of 2023, the Buskirk-Chumley Theater will present its first ever podcast festival, with back-to-back live podcast recordings, special panels, meet-and-greets, and workshops. More of that programming will be announced later this year. Alongside all of this special programming, the BCT’s hallmark music events and concerts will be woven throughout the season to tie
everything together. The BCT100 concert series already has an impressive lineup of artists ready to make their BCT debut and help kick off the season. This August alone, the BCT is presenting Grammy® Award winning Christopher Cross, Indy-based Huckleberry Funk, Swedish folk singer songwriter Sofia Talvik, indie rock band Wildermiss, and returning favorite blues guitarist Robert Cray. These offerings are only a taste of the concerts coming to the BCT during its centennial season. Audiences can look forward to these along with a large slate of new announcements coming soon. Besides hoping to make their new podcasts a regularly occuring event, the theater sees continued growth into the future. “It is my hope we are able to continue to connect the community with the history of the building, so we will expand our ability and capacity to offer more tours,” says Crismore. “It is always a highlight for me to see a small group’s eyes light up when they are backstage and the

Richmond is home to a collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany stained glass windows. The Reid Center (formerly Reid Presbyterian Church) boasts 62 Tiffany windows. Reid is thought to be one of only ten churches in the country which have all Tiffany windows. The Morrisson Reeves Library Tiffany windows are displayed overlooking The Reading Garden. They are excellent examples of Tiffany’s secret technique known as “Favrile Glass.”
In 1911 Chicago’s Johnson-Carlson Cut Glass Company came to Warsaw because their factory could not keep up with demand. What started out with 55 glass cutters 110 years ago has dwindled down to one. The original line-shaft, leather belts, and stone wheels are still operational! Visit one of the last American facilities practicing the art of cutting glass. Shop in-store and online.

Faeries, Sprites, & Lights
Celebrates Summer, Imagination, and Mythical Creatures Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Elisabeth “Betty” Ball who lived in the Oakhurst Home on the grounds of what’s now Minnetrista Museum & Gardens in Muncie. She discovered faeries living among the trees and flowers. Wearing her own faerie attire, Betty played games, danced, and skipped through the grass with her magical friends. As a tribute to Betty and her unshakable belief in faeries, thousands of faeries fly into Oakhurst Gardens every July for the enchanted Faeries, Sprites, & Lights at Minnetrista. Let your imagination play as Minnetrista’s Oakhurst Gardens are transformed into a sparkling wonderland where crafts, music, dancing, and colorful lights come together in a magical event for the whole family.
During this multi-day event, children are encouraged to come dressed in their best magical faerie attire as they imagine and play in a magical faerie wonderland. Families can enjoy games, crafts, a theater show, live music and dancing, a bubble garden, and much more throughout their enchanted Oakhurst Gardens. Kids and families are also encouraged to interact with the live characters and participate in a Faerie House Workshop and enjoy some Faerie Tea. This year they are adding a sensory friendly option on Sunday, July 31. The sensory friendly event is designed to welcome faerie friends with sensory sensitives or disabilities to the Oakhurst Gardens to experience the magic in a calmer and welcoming environment. Visitors can
enjoy quiet music, an optional live theatre show and character interactions, or just take a stroll through the beautiful flowers and decorations. Dates are July 28-30 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and July 31 from noon to 4 p.m. Cost is $12; members $10. Kids two and under are free. For more information go to minnetrista.net.
