The world is filled with heroes, not all of them celebrities; mostly they are normal people like you and me who are getting on with life, people who notice the things around them and people who stop to consider others. In the chaos of everyday happenings sometimes life has a way of changing our focus, slowing us down, making us think. Natural disasters are one of the things that are life altering, thought provoking and God embracing, for when they happen we need faith, we need strength and we need each other’s compassion. Read ‘Heroes of Hoedspruit’, a perfect example of people coming together and people enduring and surviving when all seems hopeless. This issue takes you to Mozambique to discover its beauty and offers some tempting holiday venues and destinations. This issue uncovers Cape Town, my home town and takes you from the funky little village of Kalk Bay into the wine lands. We are excited to bring you the home of MasterChef SA being hosted at Nederburg and tell you a little more about the three Judges that will have us riveted to the screen for the next 18 weeks while we anticipate the winner of MasterChef SA. Read more about celebrity Martyn Andrews and why he also loves Cape Town. If you are in Johannesburg a trip to the theatre is an absolute, Phantom of the Opera is powerfully breathtaking and Madame Zingara a refreshing delight, book these and The Five years Musical for a season of Jozi theatre not to be missed. If you still read books which I hope you do then we have some inspiration for you and a copy of Footprints by David Hilton Barber to giveaway to one Lucky reader. Please follow Mark Sampson and support his worthy cause, read Rhino Africa’s, Rhino Update and take to heart these figures, and my appeal to you in the article’ We have a voice – let’s not waste it.’ in the Ocean Awareness section. Life is too short...we need to make a difference, even if it is to one person, or one animal, every little thing you do counts for something big in the life of the one you help! Be blessed.

The Heroes
of Hoedspruit I left twelve hours before disaster struck Tulela Lodge. After a breathtaking Monday afternoon, glaring into a pink and orange sunset and sharing a couple of drinks with good friends around the fire, we all went to bed thinking the next day would be just as glorious. We were wrong. It started raining that night, and it did not stop. We did not stop to think about why we had seen such an unusual amount of tortoises, and why this big bull elephant was in such a rush, constantly changing course, heading for higher ground. That morning we went out for a game drive in the rain and came back to the lodge to stare at more rain falling relentlessly from the sky. I decided to go home and finish my packing as I was moving house the next day .I went
to bed, with all my belongings safely wrapped and stored in boxes, and still believed that I could move in spite of a bit of rain. Africa is not for sissies after all. That night, Wednesday the 18th January 2012, the water levels of the rivers and dams in the Greater Hoedspruit region, now already fueled by 24 hours of solid torrential rain as part of cyclone ‘Dando’, rose in most areas by

Special Feature over 500 mm, victimising around 300 households. Nature has never ceased to amaze me, but that night and day, she definitely proved once again that she can make or break us at anytime, anywhere. And this time, she used water to remind us. Around 3 a.m. that morning, Bruce and Theresa McDonald, at Tulela Lodge in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, were awoken by gurgling sounds from the taps in their bathrooms. The sucking sound triggering instant memories of the floods in 2000, they instantly knew they were in trouble. They woke their children Kieran and KerriAnn, grabbed 78-year old Grandmother Carmel, the two dogs, two guinea pigs, two cats and a hamster and fled to the highest building on the property, the laundry. More rain bucketed down and the water rose notably higher and higher. The decision was made, only a solid tree would be able to save them from being washed out of the laundry. One by one Bruce and Theresa hauled their family up a nearby solid Jackal berry which could only be reached for as long as the laundry would withstand the raging river that had been formed. Soaking wet, their cold bodies not being able to escape the pouring rain, they held each other in that tree for hours, watching their home, their possessions and their livelihood being swept away by
a devastating river. They were eternally grateful to have each other, but all else was lost. A few hours later a phone call was made by the warden of the Klaserie, Colin Rowles. He had received the only message that Bruce had managed to send from his phone before it died in the rain. After Colin had heard that the Hoedspruit Airforce Base could not immediately assist with a chopper due to the heavy rain, he called Mike Pingo of Sunrise Aviation in Nelspruit to come and assist in the rescue of Bruce and his family, as well as numerous other families in the reserve who needed evacuation. Mike did not hesitate. In spite of the weather and the obvious danger to himself and his chopper, he immediately left Nelspruit, was forced to make two landings before he could reach Tulela, and evacuated the terrified McDonald family and the lodge’s staff from the water’s cruel hold on them. That day Mike, Colin, his wife Jan, and Zani Kunz – in spite of their own homes having been flooded – worked tirelessly and selflessly helping everybody get warm, fed and comforted. Voluntary Heroes of Hoedspruit. Whilst Colin called Mike, around the same time the Hoedspruit Farm Watch and Reaction Unit were notified that the Huddle family of Blyde Adventure Camp was being washed away along the Blyde River, and this unusual group of volunteers went off to the rescue. Like the King’s Musketeers, these dedicated Hoedspruiters live by a strict code of compassion and commitment, and thanks to their quick response, all members of the Huddle Family (except their horse) was brought to safety. Bolted into action, more people along the Blyde River

McDonalds Rescue were being rescued and roads that were too dangerous to travel on were being closed. Buses, to transport the thousands of stranded farm workers were organised, and standing for hours on end in the pouring rain, right up into the night, they saved hundreds of people’s lives. The next day they spread out along the Zandspruit, Olifants and Klaserie rivers, initiated evacuations and organised the local farmers, with help from Power Construction, to start repairing the damaged roads and bridges. One for all and all for one Voluntary Heroes of Hoedspruit. Friday morning – 20 January 2012 – the first meeting to have the Hoedspruit region declared a disaster area took place, and by Saturday afternoon another meeting between the Hoedspruit Farmwatch, the Hoedspruit Airforce Base and the Hoedspruit Victim Support Unit resulted in the opening of the Humanitarian Relief Centre at the Airforce Base. Debby Thomson, as the driving force behind the Victim Support Unit, volunteered as the coordinator and the following two weeks over 400 food and clothing deliveries were made and more than 55,000 liters of bottled water were distributed amongst the flood victims. After a few days the rest of South Africa had learnt what had transpired in the Lowveld, and food, water and clothes were being delivered from all corners of the country. Jacaranda took an interest and covered the area for two days with live broadcasts. Hoedspruit was a hot topic for days, but all that mattered to Debby and

her team of volunteers, as well as the dedicated people from the Airforce Base, was to let the victims know that they were not alone and that help was coming their way. Voluntary Heroes of Hoedspruit. It is reported that six lives were lost in South Africa and another four in Mozambique. At least 500 people were displaced from their homes in Mozambique and some damage was caused to roads and infrastructure. By Mozambican standards, Dando was a relatively benign event compared to past storms and the storm that followed immediately afterwards - Intense Tropical Cyclone Funso. On January 18, while Hoedspruit was still reeling as a result of approximately 300-500 mm of rainfall over a short period, a ship carrying 54 people sank on its way from Anjouan to Mayotte amidst rough seas produced by Funso. At least 15 passengers drowned while dozens remain missing. Over three million people were affected by Funso’s storm-force winds and 56 000 were left

homeless. Thankfully for Hoedspruit, Funso did not make landfall on the South African coast and we were spared its devastation. Regionally, Dando can be described as a mild and not uncommon event, but from the Hoedspruit perspective, it was devastating. There are many reports that 100-year flood lines were exceeded. The fact that trees, probably a few hundred years old, were simply washed away bears testimony to the severity of the flooding at local level. Above Kampersrus, there are massive erosion scars on the previously pristine mountainside. There being no
human impact on the catchment above these scars, one can assume that the rainfall there was the most there had been in centuries. The rainfalls of 500mm and more that were reliably recorded are truly exceptional for Hoedspruit. London (UK) has an average annual rainfall of 500-550 mm and London is regarded a rather wet place; Hoedspruit had London’s annual rainfall in 24 hours! Six lives were lost in South Africa; none of these were in Hoedspruit which was the area that received the most rainfall. This is nothing short of a miracle and I know for a fact that if it hadn’t been for a handful of selfless people, supported by the Greater Hoedspruit community, acting immediately and professionally many more lives would have been lost. Many more people would have been stuck on their roofs and in trees for much longer, people would have never received the food and water rations that were so crucial during the first couple of days and they would have felt completely alone and isolated in their loss. The Heroes of Hoedspruit deserve all the credit for the relatively fortunate ending of the Floods of 18 January 2012. To the Heroes of Hoedspruit THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts.

DID YOU KNOW? Hundreds of thousands of years ago, mass sand deposits from the Limpopo River formed the Bazaruto Archipelago, which comprises four main islands, namely Magaruque, Bazaruto, Santa Carolina and Benguerra. Originally named “Sao Antonio by Portuguese explorers, Benguerra Island was later renamed after a local tribal chief and declared part of a National Park in 1971. The island, which lies 14 km offshore from the Mozambican mainland town of Vilanculos, extends approximately 11 km in length and 5, 5 km in width. With its sand dunes, savannah, freshwater lakes, wetland eco-systems, acacia woodlands and forests, Benguerra Island is a diverse Ecological gem.

Virtually unknown to the outside world and undisturbed for centuries there is a place where time has stood still. This is Ibo Island or as the locals call it Ilha do Ibo. Nestled in the awesome Quirimbas Archipelago of Northern Mozambique, and nominated for World Heritage status, Ibo is an island that is beautiful, remote and untouched by commercial developments and one of the most intriguing, idyllic and romantic islands you could dream of visiting. For the last 500 years Ibo Island was a prosperous trading post along the stunning coast of East Africa. Three forts, a beautiful old catholic church and numerous ancient trading buildings stand guard over the sea. Pirates, ivory, intrigue and the never to be forgotten slave trade are a part of this tiny palm-fringed coral island’s history. Boundless secrets, history and culture are still contained amongst the marvellous ruins, which date back to the early 1500’s. Ibo Island boasts much more than just historical importance. Easily one of the most unspoilt destinations on the planet, Ibo also falls within the newly created Quirimbas National Park. Beyond the warm turquoise waters inhabited by turtles and tropical fish, the ocean around Ibo is also home to dolphins, whales and the shy and mysterious dugong. The kaalvoet, the kitsch and the cosmopolitan in Kalk Bay! “There’s a little bit of everything in this little piece of nowhere. From ornate antique mirrors to African style jewellery, from Kalky’s ‘feesh and tjips’ to the Tribeca bakery’s ‘Pan au Chocolat’; whether your purse is weighed down with copper and silver coins or platinum bankcards this coastal town will captivate you with its muddled charm,” says Lauren Voges. Lauren Voges winds a cheap and cheerful path through the hotchpotch of boutiques, stores and restaurants mindful of her lack of a platinum bank card. “Sugar and spice and all things nice no longer apply to little girls, I think to myself as I stare down a main street that is filled with antique stores, vintage clothing boutiques, ice-cream shops and even a French Creperie.” Who would’ve thought that this little coastal town would harbour such treats? A light breeze carries the scents of the sea, waffles, and fish and chips. I breathe in deeply; so this is Kalk Bay!

TravelMag SA - Issue 5
It seems almost unbelievable that this eccentric and lively town started off as merely a port for the Dutch settlers in 1742. The town fell in and out of use for the next few decades; a port until 1795, abandoned until the 1820s, popular during the whaling boom and eventually Kalk Bay became home to a few refugee Filipinos. The rich history of the town, captured in its antique book stores and antique shops, is perfectly blended with the present day’s obsession with vintage clothing and eccentric fashion. The town is one of contrasts; antiques to your left and high fashion to your right. Cape Dutch style architecture with red, blue and yellow painted walls, whether you’re in the mood to soak in the history or marinade yourself in eccentricity Kalk Bay Main Street is the place to do it. Window shopping in the Kalk Bay quarter, the Railway House antique store as well as Gypsy and Vintage clothing stalls can work up quite an appetite. For
Travel Cape Town those of you with silvers and coppers, lunch at Kalky’s is a must. Before you dismiss the red and white Cocoa Cola sponsored sign above the less-than-lavish looking restaurant, take a deep breath and let the smells of perfectly seasoned chips and beautifully fried hake fill your nostrils. You won’t be able to curb your footsteps towards the ordering station and the only thing that will snap you out of your reverie is the price list. For a mere R38 a sizeable portion of hake and chips can be yours. A particular staff member is rather fond of teasing customers so don’t be surprised if a seagull like squawk and a pinch on the leg come with your meal. “I got you this time,” she’ll cackle, if she does succeed in jolting you out of your seat. Kalky’s is situated right next to the harbour and the fish market. A walk along the pier and through the fish market is both refreshing and entertaining, tourists flock to the fish market not only to buy some Cape Salmon or Red Roman but to enjoy the spectacle of the fishermen feeding the seals. Cameras flash while the seals slap pieces of fish against the water and chase after any new sinewy looking pieces that the fishermen fling into the wa-
ter. The ooh’s and aah’s of the small crowd watching the seals can be heard all the way down the pier. Once you’ve reached the end, the lighthouse is one of the many picture stops where you will probably be asked to take a picture of a loving couple or of a family with teenagers trying, in spite themselves, to look surly. With sigh-inducing views of sparkly waters and endless skies I would also struggle to maintain my ‘I am-too-cool-forthis’ expression. A walk back along Main Street will take you past Kalk Bay train station which is instrumental to the next must see destination in Kalk Bay. A stairway that leads underneath the Railway station, where you will no doubt be serenaded by some of the local boys, will take you to the Brass Bell. First opened in 1967, the Brass Bell started out as a mere hang out for locals, but today the premises boasts six hundred seats and five different restaurants. If you’re in the mood for a cocktail, the Bikini deck serves all the old favourites; strawberry daiquiris, mojitos and pina coladas to name but a few. The pub upstairs offers a quieter setting where the locals discuss the latest in sport over draught beers and you can lay your head back and doze in the afternoon sun. Whether you’re sitting in Kalky’s at the harbour, in the Brass Bell or on St James beach sunsets in Kalk Bay are the culmination of all things nice. From meandering through a main street that’s like a sweet shop filled with everyone’s favourite treats to drinking beers in a pub to a sunset with rosewater and raspberry ice cream from the Ice Café; Sugar and spice and all things nice definitely apply to Kalk Bay. Little girls will need to find a new catch phrase. Pics courtesy of Adam Schnider & Lauren Voges.

Why Martyn Andrews
loves Cape Town! British TV presenter Martyn Andrews has visited over 550 cities and towns around the world. Obsessed with air miles and bringing us his latest travel adventures and antics, Martyn has hosted various TV shows from all corners of the planet - from being banned from the Vatican to playing on Tchaikovsky’s childhood piano in Central Russia – his travel stories are endless. We caught up with the man himself at Heathrow airport to discuss “his obsession with Cape Town”. Martyn Says, The best part of my job is... Getting paid to see the most remote and amazing corners of the world. It is important to stay grounded and humble and know that you can always be replaced! I was working on a dangerous diving series a few years back travelling constantly between Thailand, Bermuda, Florida, Egypt, Australia, and Israel etc. Some dream jobs do exist! (Okay, with a bit of jetlag thrown in). The worst part is.... Living in different places all the time I wish they would hurry up and invent teleportation! I’d use it more than anyone! I currently live between London and Moscow with a holiday home in Cyprus. Different friends everywhere, clothes in various places, constantly catching up and missing birthday parties, losing phones, chargers etc.

TravelMag SA - Issue 5
Plus while visiting places such as Chile, Outer Mongolia, Siberia or Vietnam for example – amazing as they where, I remember thinking “Damn. I just wish I had my parents or one of my best friends with me!” Sharing travel experiences for me is much more fun. That said, my job is to share the amazing locations with the viewers at home. How many times have you visited Cape Town? I’ve visited South Africa I think around 11 times now! I simply adore the place. It offers one of the best lifestyles in the world. Simple! In comparison to other places it is cheap, the weather is glorious, and the people are friendly, the food and wine glorious, it has nature, wildlife, history, fabulous hotels, restaurants and some of the best beaches in the world! If only the water was a bit warmer! I’ve stayed in various hotels ranging from low key three stars to glorious five stars, and all have been wonderful. I’m thinking of buying an apartment there actually! Is there anyone you would like to give a special mention? Yes! The penguins at Boulders Bay! Wow! Not only is the water a little warmer and the scenery stunning there, but
Celebrity you’ll find hundreds of interesting little black and white friends bathing along the coast. What a sight! The African penguins strolling along the sand and hang out in various groups. The best photo moment! What was your favourite place in Cape Town? Easy! Table Mountain! The journey to the top of Cape Town’s Table Mountain is a must for any visitor! The best, I love the fact that the cabins revolve as you go up! The mountain top gives visitors breathtaking views over the city and its beaches. (As long as there is no cloud of course!) On a clear day one has a magnificent view across the Cape Flats to the Hottentots Holland Mountains. A friend suggested walking to the top - No thank you! I’d need a ventilator with my asthma! What was your favourite activity? Shopping? Robben Island? Wine tasting? The V&A Waterfront? Whale watching? Let me think - there are hundreds of amazing things to do in Cape Town!! Approximately an hour and a half away from Cape Town is the seaside town of Hermanus. I love it there. It’s a popular holiday destination for tourists and locals and its known one of the best places for land based whale watching in the world. The best time for whale watching is between August and November and at this time the bay is dotted with whales. Wow! The first time I saw one I almost cried! Next on my travel wish list is... New Zealand! It’s one of the few places I’ve not been. So beautiful and the nature, wildlife and outdoor sports looks incredible! I’ve wanted to go for years but every New Year or February I’ve just ended up going to other places. That said, it’s pencilled in for Feb next year! Auckland here I come! For someone who has travelled to over 500 cities what is it about South Africa that captured your heart? I think it’s the mix of cultures that makes South Africa so special. I suppose the Cape’s character results from a melting pot of Indonesian, French, Dutch, and British & German settlers mixed with the local African tribes. Although there have been troubles and political unrest – it’s nice to see when all that comes together it can create an amazing cultural fusion. All diversities working to create and develop a fabulous tourist location on the world wide map. I love the Dutch surnames too! Was there one encounter, place, incident that stood out for you? The sensational safari’s I have been on during my several visits to SA! Coming face to face with animals in their natural environment - Wow! I thought a close encounter with a rhino one time was pretty scary though! For an English person being used to seeing animals in captivity (zoo’s etc), to see them wild is a pretty spiritual experience. The many safari’s I have done have really touched my core. Something everyone should witness!
Do you have a message for South Africans? I have many South African friends! Many of whom I have met while working in London and Moscow (temperature difference or what!) Whatever colour of their skin they all have such a zest for life. I love the accent! My advice to anyone especially to South Africans living so far away from many countries is to travel and see the world. Experience snow! It develops your soul and understanding of this crazy world. Do you have a message for anyone considering visiting SA? One word – Go! Beautiful beaches, dramatic scenery, sensational sunsets, award winning restaurants, glorious weather, nature and wildlife. ‘I want to come back now!’ Cape Town is a spectacular place with something for everyone. Best of all is that it is cheap for overseas tourists. The scenery and climate is fantastic, the people are friendly and it is rich in culture - and you get no jet lag when flying from the UK! My top travel tip is... Text message yourself and a relative or friend your passport number and details and save it in your message folders. Also, scan your passport and credit cards and email it to yourself. That way you always have a virtual copy of all of them if you ever lose or have your bags stolen! I always pack... My own pillow, coloured scented candles, moisturisers, a posh air freshener (a bit girly but it’s been needed in hotel rooms I’ve stayed in!), my own toilet paper and my little white fluffy teddy I got in Peru called Candyfloss. She has her own Facebook following now! I’ve taken photographs of her in dozens of locations all around the world! Brilliant fun. My guilty travel pleasure is... Going on personal holidays myself! I tell myself to stay in one country more than a few weeks, but I always end up going for long weekends away all the time! Bosnia, Poland, Morocco etc. Even though I travel lots for work it doesn’t put me off. Maybe I’m addicted to getting air miles? My mum says – “don’t you just want to sit still son?” My answer, I won’t be happy until I’ve visited every major city in the world. Problem is, I’m three quarters of the way there! I’m desperate to visit Jo-burg and to see Angel falls! Martyn Andrews originally from Liverpool, UK is a TV presenter and journalist who has written and hosted dozens of travel shows on a range of English speaking networks around the world (BBC, Euronews, Russia Today to name a few). From an extreme travel series on Russia, to undiscovered Egypt and dangerous diving, he has seen more countries than the royal family and has more lives than a cat. http://www.martynandrews.co.uk TravelMag SA - Issue 5

MasterChef SA
masterchef sa MasterChef South Africa is promising one of the most beautiful settings for its debut series, which began on M-Net on Tuesday, 20 March, with the highprofile Nederburg winery the star venue of the reality cooking show. “This could well be the loveliest venue ever chosen for a MasterChef series anywhere in the world,” says Anne Davis, M-Net’s senior commissioning editor of the series. “We wanted to shoot in the Winelands because Cape vineyards are immediately recognisable to local and international viewers as distinctly South African. The Western Cape is also the culinary capital of South Africa and has great access to fresh produce. We obviously also wanted good weather and the Cape summer offers a very favourable climate. Nederburg was able to provide everything we were looking for.” The Paarl winery, set against the dramatic Drakenstein Mountains, has revamped its world-renowned Johann Graue Auction Hall, the annual venue for its famous Nederburg Auction, equipping it as the kitchen for the show that will be broadcast weekly over 18 weeks.
The 1 000 m² venue will be where most of the show’s action will take place but it is also close enough to any offsite challenges in which the contestants will be involved, according to the organisers. Davis says the overhaul of the Nederburg auction hall has been an extensive process. There are over 20 cooking stations equipped with state-of-the-art appliances and utensils. To create the floor and the walls, over 15 tonnes of wood was sourced locally, while 5 kilometres of under floor cabling have been used and the garden around the area has been beautifully landscaped. The final result is really impressive!” When the MasterChef SA team approached Nederburg to consider making the winery facilities available for the series, the winery was ready to oblige. “Nederburg is surrounded by gorgeous gardens, vineyards and sweeping views of the mountains. The historic and contemporary buildings create an exciting blend of classical and modern, and altogether this is a very appealing and attractive location,” says Suné van der Merwe, Distell’s category manager for wines in South Africa and whose portfolio includes Nederburg. “We are very proud of its starring role.” Nederburg, established in 1791, is South Africa’s most awarded winery and the official wine sponsor of MasterChef South Africa. Its prize to South Africa’s first MasterChef will include a customised sommelier course, one-onone master classes in wine presented by Nederburg’s internationally acclaimed cellar master Razvan Macici, and a year’s supply of Nederburg Winemaster’s Reserve Wines. In 2011 Nederburg was chosen as the Platter’s South African Wine Guide Winery of the Year for having the highest number of five-star wines. This year, it shares the honours with two other wineries. One of South Africa’s best-selling brands, Nederburg is available across the world. In 2010, the winery made and marketed a range of South African wines for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ in South Africa. MasterChef SA started on M-Net and M-Net HD on Tuesday 20 March at 19:30 and it will run for 18 episodes until 17 July 2012. *Information supplied by De Kock Communications for Nederburg Wines and MNET Publicity: Original Productions.

Nederburg teams up
with Woolworths
Nederburg and Woolworths have collaborated to create two very reasonably priced wines for exclusive sale by Woolworths. They are a complex, medium-bodied Grenache (R59) that makes a great partner to Mediterranean fare, and a highly versatile Sauvignon Blanc/ Chardonnay blend (R49). This is the first time the winery has developed wines solely for Woolworths, with cellar master Razvan Macici and Woolworths wine selector Allan Mullins collaborating closely on conceiving and styling the two new offerings. The 2010 Grenache, which is a first from the Paarl winery and also the first varietal Grenache marketed by Woolworths, is made from low-yielding, unirrigated, mature bush vines in Paarl and Klapmuts, yielding 4 to 5 tons per hectare. Macici says the fruit was picked at full ripeness with sweet, juicy and spicy flavours. “Each block was individually vinified and fermented in open tanks. Once taken off the skins and malolactic fermentation was completed, the wine was aged in a selection of second-, third- and fourthfill French and Romanian oak barrels for 18 months. “An intense but graceful wine with a velvety soft texture, it is brimming with peppery notes, succulent black and red fruit, a hint of liquorice and leather, and very subtle oaking.” He adds that it makes an excellent partner to savoury tapas and red meat dishes, as well as grills, roasts and casseroles. Nederburg has established a very loyal following for its white blends, with its Sauvignon blanc-dominated Ingenuity White consistently earning five stars in the Platter’s South African Wine Guide since its maiden 2007 vintage. The 2011 Woolworths white blend is also dominated by Sauvignon Blanc (60%), sourced from Darling, fermented in stainless steel and kept on the lees for 10 months until blending. Chardonnay, which has not undergone malolactic fermentation to ensure a vibrancy and intensity to the wine, comprises the balance. It includes a combination of both barreland tank-fermented wine. The Chardonnay was sourced from Simondium and Durbanville. “A crisply elegant and refreshing blend with a lovely green colour that is tinged with gold, it shows traces of peach, pear and tropical notes, and a hint of vanilla,” says Macici. “It is zesty and creamy-textured, with a satisfyingly full mouth and is very food friendly.” He recommends serving it with seafood’s, poultry and pastas made with creamy sauces. Woolworths is also carrying four of Nederburg’s Wine Master’s Reserve wines. They are the Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The reds also sell for R59 and the whites, for R49. Issued by DKC Nederburg Wines

Rhino Rhino Africa is Africa’s leading online tour operator, bringing over 15,000 guests to Africa every year. “As a Safari Company we do not want to bring guests to see the Big 4! For us, the most important thing is sustainable tourism. It is not just about being green; it is about ensuring a long term future for South African tourism. Our primary tourist resources in Africa are wildlife and natural beauty, as we do not have the historical and architectural attractions of Europe we need to protect these resources.” There are five species of Rhino in the world, two in Africa and three in Asia with two of the three Asian populations the Sumatran and the Javan on the brink of extinction. In the 1960’s African black rhino numbered 100,000 but this waned to 2,400 in the early 1990’s, today there are about 4,800 black rhino in Africa. A century ago there were as little as 50 white rhino, today there are around 20,000 but with the increase of poaching these numbers are threatened. From 2000 to 2007 only a dozen or so rhino were poached every year in Southern Africa. In 2010, 333 were slaughtered and in 2011 the figure increased to 411. So far in 2012, 135 Rhino’s have already been lost to poaching. The latest figures released by the South African National Parks (SANParks) revealed that 30 arrests have already been made this year. This figure is not yet high enough to suppress the natural population growth, although it is edging ever closer to the tipping point where the numbers killed will exceed the number born. Government threats of a maximum R250 000 fine, or ten years imprisonment for rhino poaching have not abated the slaughter. While we believe in supporting the initiatives of our partner companies, we have also started our own initiative called Challenge4aCause which aims to support the conservation of Africa’s endangered animal and plant species and will finance projects that seek to uplift poor communities. Travelmagsa encourages its readers to support Challenge4aCause which is a part of Rhino Africa’s CSR programme, with the view that we can all make a difference. 30

Celebrity Expedition
Funny Man Goes the Extra
Mile for Climate Change Awareness ECO-median Mark Sampson is doing his part in raising awareness about climate change. The stand-up comedian and climate change activist launched the City of Cape Town’s Climate Smart Campaign with his show ‘Africa Clockwise’ entitled “The Lighter Shade of Green”. The full theatre show version of the corporate presentation, Lighter shade of Green, was called Africa Clockwise to coincide with the name of the expedition leaving early 2013. In this intelligent 35 minute interactive comedy, Sampson gives his audience practical Green advice. “The Lighter Shade of Green” shows that South Africa, as a developing country, has the ability to cope with any type of change including, of course, climate change. “Africa Clockwise” was hailed by critics as “…stand-up comedy at its finest…” and Sampson described as “…a man with something to say and a fabulous way of saying
it….” (Lesley Stones, The Daily Maverick) “Mark Sampson puts the conscience into comedy, Africa Clockwise is more than a comedy, and it’s a crusade…” (Christina Kennedy, Business Day) This so-called crusade, shares its name with a crusade of a different kind; an epic journey in aid of climate change awareness.” Early 2013 Mark Sampson and his family plan to embark on a two year long journey across Africa. They will circumnavigate the African continent in the Green Bandwagon, a ten ton truck that runs on cooking oil. Besides eco-friendly fuel, the Sampsons are also taking a collection of eco-gadgets on their trip. These environmentally friendly gadgets include solar cookers from Sunfire, solar shack lights from Slice of Green and rechargeable LED torches and LED Lenser. “Africa Clockwise” has gained fantastic support in the form of Apple Mac computers from Digicape, security for their truck from Trellidor, tools from Snap on Tools, LED torches, LED Lenser and Leatherman from Awesome Tools; Hi Tech donated shoes; Scarfini contributed surfboard fins and Groundswell an eco-surfboard. The trip received a broadcast quality AF-101 camera from Panasonic and Olympus, SanDisk , Sigma and Leica equipment from Tudortech. To keep the electronics running, Wintec Solutions donated Powergorilla and Solargorilla chargers. Mark Sampson will visit more than thirty countries from which he hopes to learn whether Africa has the capacity to show the world how to combat climate change. He also plans to see if it is possible to persuade his children that they can survive without a television, water on tap and other luxuries, usually Mark Sampson and His Family taken for granted.
Follow the journey on www.africaclockwise.co.za and look out for Africa Clockwise the show on its return in 2014! Facebook http://www.facebook.com/pages/Africa-Clockwise/255798794439709 Twitter - AfricaClockwise *Information supplied by Mark Sampson. 32

Ocean Awareness
Together
we have a Voice – let’s not waste it
The Ocean has the ability to reach us in a way that other elements of nature cannot, we can just sit and watch the tumultuous expressions of the sea and instantly become absorbed in its very essence. The smell of the ocean in your nostrils, the taste of salt on your lips, the feel of its cool waters spraying as the waves break on the shoreline and the lash of whispers of the sea breeze as it whips your hair gently across your face. The Ocean speaks to us in aeons of mysteries; it speaks of laden ships of treasure, murmuring tales of privateers and sailors. We lean in to hear the tales of sea monsters, mermaids and abandoned ships, hidden worlds and unspeakable wonders lying deep on the ocean beds.

TravelMag SA - Issue 5
We discover, create, recreate, invent, imagine and endure, and we flock earnestly to aquariums worldwide to discover and learn about the wonders that we cannot believe imaginable. The brave of us dive to unfathomable depths to be captivated by the sheer wonder and beauty of this colourful underwater world, which lies from surface to sea-floor promising imaginings that the human mind cannot alone conjure. Within these sometimes azure, sometimes murky depths are creatures that are so real to us that our children are drawing pictures of them, so real to us that we can name them and feel a connectivity with them that you would imagine only a mer-creature could understand. But no there is something deeper within us humans

there is a better nature that allows most of us to reach out with empathetic compassion when the cry of one of God’s creatures echoes the ocean depths in death. Sharks, Whales, Dolphins, Seals and other important creations each and every one playing a important role in the thread of existence are continually under threat as our oceans are fished beyond capacity and the future of species are threatened on a daily basis. In cases such as Sharks, the unthinkable Finning not only threatens the very future of Sharks as a species but also threatens the existence of humans that consume them. Local fishermen, unskilled and uneducated along our continent are being subjected to exploitation and are conducting aimless killing sprees for money sake. In the East there are unthinkable massacres taking place of these beautiful ocean creatures. The very same ones we watch dipping and diving through the waves. The ones we flock to see once a year, the ones who’s history dates back to the beginning of time, Oh the blessing of Jonah as he was saved by the Whale and brought back to safety, the wonder of the Whale girl who rode her Whale into the ocean and called her friends to safety. My very own sister walked the length of the strip from Fish Hoek to Simonstown in Cape Town, alongside a Whale that swam beside her the entire way. I myself have stood in awe watching schools of
dolphins knowing that the beneath the waves surface the numbers of those we can see are doubled, is there anything more graceful than 50 and more dolphins treasuring and frolicking the waves just meters from the shoreline. Many of us have amazing and incredible ocean adventure stories that have not yet been told. Stories that if we let them will become tales of yesteryear as generations to come conjure images from the World Wide Web to discover what we mean when we say Shark, Whale, Dolphin, Seal. I feel the tears running down my face as I imagine such a world, a place where these most blessed creatures, a vulnerable and integral part of nature, lay as carcasses of memory in future museums. There are land creatures, like our Rhino’s and Elephants that in time, may endure the same terrible fate if something is not done to curb the continual demand for money and the human will for power that will do anything, even inconceivable things, to gain as much of it as possible. I hope this article encourages you to TAKE A STAND, FIND A CAUSE, and FIGHT IT and collectively let yourselves BE HEARD. In every issue, Travelmagsa chooses an artist or a photographer to be featured. In this issue we have chosen a wedding photographer from Namibia. Pamela has entered our sister magazine’s Bride Essence Photographer competition two years in a row and received the runner-up position each time. We believe that Pamela Christine Feirsinger van Heerden deserves to have the opportunity to share her passion with you and this is what she had to say… “Photography is a way to express oneself; a photograph can be a metaphor for many things. There are different types of photography and they each serve a specific purpose. I love observing spontaneous and unexpected phenomena. I enjoy seeing the beauty when human beings and objects harmoniously interact with one another. I am transfixed by the desire to capture these fleeting moments in a frame—though it might be small, it still reflects the truth of my surroundings and instills it with added meaning. I always take time to travel to different places in order to experience a variety of changing perspectives. Every photographed moment has its own hidden meaning simply waiting for me to convey it to an audience. I love the natural beauty of photographs when I take candid shots, capturing the truth in people’s expressions when they do not realise they are being photographed.
36
TravelMag SA - Issue 5
For me, spontaneity provides purity and truth to photographs. I practice shooting people from afar, no matter where or who they are, exulting in the unexpected and coincidental. I capture their warm smiles and record in my black reel their small and beautiful actions that few care to notice in the chaotic realm of daily life. To maintain the balance of light and produce a wellproportioned picture, I gently change the direction of the lens or lower and lift the focus as I rearrange the shooting angle. Doing so, I engage in a delicate dance with my subjects whose crescendo is an unforgettable image captured forever on film. I think it is an honour to be able to capture meaningful moments in people’s lives, to share these moments with them and to make it possible for them to cherish their special times for years to come. I love looking at my personal family photographs; they bring back good memories and make me realise how grateful I am. This is why I love photography. It inspires me. It is my passion.” Visit Pamela’s website http://www.vh.com.na

“This performance proves that South Africa is in an echelon along with the very best in International Theatre; the performance is beautifully riveting and equally magnificent in colour, costume and performance – a stunning success! Not to be missed.” The Broadway production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera – already the longest-running show in Broadway history – reached another milestone on the 11th February: its 10 000th performance! The historic performance at the Majestic Theatre included a giant cake and a special curtain call with a video link to the London Company on the stage of Her Majesty’s Theatre. Back home in South Africa, Pieter Toerien’s South African Production continues to wow Johannesburg audiences at the Teatro at Montecasino. Having sold over 100 000 tickets and extended to May 20th, the Phantom of the Opera South Africa has received rave reviews from the public and critics alike with standing ovations at every performance and record-breaking business at the box office! Assistant Choreographer. For the SA production, Anton Luitingh is the Resident Director and Louis Zurnamer the Musical Director. The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a disfigured musical genius known only as ‘The Phantom’ who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerised by the talents and beauty of a young soprano - Christine, the Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine’s love for Raoul, The Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness and passions collide. This superb South African production is sponsored by Telkom. Performances: Tue – Fri @ 8pm Sat @ 3pm & 8pm Sun @ 1:30pm & 6:30pm Booking at http://www.computicket.com or 011 340 8000

Terms and Conditions: Prize is not redeemable for cash, Judges Decision is final. This is a book about Tzaneen, the vast splendour of its mountain ranges, the historical events that shaped its history, its rich cultural heritage and, above all, the strength and determination of the many people who have left their footprints here. From the once mighty Pedi kingdom and the Tsonga-Shangaan empire of Gaza to Modjadji the Rain Queen; from the Swiss Missionaries to the Bishops Barnabas and Egenas Lekganyane of the Zion Christian Churches; from Commandant Piet Joubert and the Makgoeba campaign to Breaker Morant and the Bushveldt Carbineers – their stories unfold. Sarah Heckford, the Lady Trader; Doel Zeederberg who opened up the coach route to the Lowveld and Mamphela Ramphele, anti-apartheid activist, academic, businesswoman, medical doctor, none of whom were born here but whose presence here was significant. Hans Merensky, our greatest geologist; Orlando Baragwanath who prospected copper in what was then Northern Rhodesia; Botha De Meillion who eradicated malaria; John Murray, the 11th Duke of Atholl, our very own aristocrat; Gordon McNeill’s clivia and the Thompson family and their famous flowering cherry trees – are all names in our past and present. Creative souls like Carrol Boyes, Irma van Rooyen, Ina van Schalkwyk and Tom Joubert have all found their inspiration in these mountains and valleys. Farmers like Bill Tooley, the first to grow citrus here, Bertie van Zyl and his vast tomato empire, the Vorster and Gubitz families, citrus barons; Len Hobson and his macadamias, mangoes and papinos; Howard Blight and his huge macadamia nursery; fruit exporter Nino Burelli who made Katope an international brand name; likewise Johan Steenkamp and 42

Original research on the Mmamatholas of Letsitele Valley, who were forced to move in the bad old days, and whose successful land claims turned sour, can be found in this book. New light is thrown on the Sapekoe Tea Estates and the exciting prospects for the future. Author: David Hilton-Barber, ISBN: 978-0-9869979-6-9, Cost: R250.00.
