Ithembelihle Lsen School means Place of Good Hope. It works under the philosophy that a healthy child is a happy child and a visit to the school is certain to tug at your heart strings, as you will meet 246 special needs children, who are indeed incredibly special. These children are living through the hope and initiative of their educators, who are dedicated and devoted to them. Only 30 children are day scholars. All of the children are provided with three meals a day and the hostel children all have a bed to sleep in, and receive constant care and assistance from the care givers and staff. The principle Leonor Ngozi, started the school 10 years ago with just over 40 children. Tiensie Dry, the deputy principle of the school, showed us the school and facilities, which is striving to stand as a much needed beacon of light to their learners who all have special education needs. Although Ithembelihle Lsen School receives a subsidy from the Gauteng Department of Education, the balance of the funding must be obtained via fundraising and donations. And as you can imagine schooling, housing and feeding over 200 children on a daily basis is no small endeavour. The basis of the curriculum at Ithembile Lsen School is the same RNCS (Revised National

Curriculum Statement) used in mainstream schools, and the educators at the school work together with therapists to better understand each individual learners needs. The school has stepped into the age of technology, which enables them to facilitate access to skills, which the children would otherwise not be able to develop. It is incredible to see the enthusiasm of the children at every level, from Grade R to Grade 7, and to see the dedication of the staff. The children have disabilities ranging from cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spinal injuries, congenital physical disabilities, learning disabilities and specific medical conditions. Each one of them is a beacon of hope. They are hoping to have a skills centre in the future, which will facilitate physiotherapists, and house a heated pool. However there are also many basic necessities needed, to improve the lives of these children. The school can be contacted on 011 828 8524. TravelmagSA has given Ithembelihle Lsen School, the Back Page Advert of the magazine until December 2014. Your Support is most appreciated.

Affordable walking safaris in the exclusive

Big Five

Greater Kruger National Park

There is a world of difference between experiencing a safari in Africa on foot, “old style”, than say, from the tinted windows of a luxury bus! A walking safari is about getting out there with the African wildlife; sharing their paths and waterholes - the daily dramas of their lives - sharing their space, following their tracks, and feeling the tingle of your own senses, hearing the beating of your own heart, as you edge closer to a herd of elephant resting in the shade. A safari is a journey of the body and the soul, a venture into the unknown, and an opportunity to face some of the mysteries of nature. We still believe in the magic of the bush, and strive to offer that ‘once in a lifetime experience’ to all our guests. The safaris appeal to everyone with an adventurous mind, keen on a learning experience. Every walk is a book on its own, with the emphasis on information on all the wonders of nature, big and small. Because of the dangerous aspects of a walking safari, the minimum age is 16. Although there is no maximum age, the walks can last up to six hours and tracking might lead the trail through thick bush, riverbeds and gullies. Therefore an average fitness level is required, especially in the hotter summer months (Nov March). A maximum of eight people makes up a trail.

The scheduled safaris run twice a week – either Friday to Monday (Four day / Three nights) or Monday to Friday (Five day / Four nights). The camp is private and secluded and not open to day visitors. The camp can sleep up to eight people in twin-bedded accommodation. Linen and towels are provided. The combination of walks and drives in the open 4x4 Landrover are dependent on weather and animal movements, and are conducted from camp at the sole discretion of the trails guide. Each safari is designed to experience the bush the way one should - on foot. Although in Big Five areas, there are no guarantees on sightings – what you see is what you get. We do however guarantee a real bush experience!

Safari Camp

This private establishment, constructed in the traditional style of an African Safari Lodge has recently been refurbished and is now available to the public. Built on a small riverbed underneath huge Marula, Leadwood and Fever trees, the birdlife is magnificent and elephants often wander past in search of some shade. Situated on 3200 ha within the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve (Big Five Greater Kruger National Park), this select eight bedded camp offers families, friends and small business groups a truly private wildlife experience. The camp has electricity, and facilities include a comfortable lounge area, an indoor dining room in case of bad weather, as well as an outside deck with a small pool, perfect for cooling down during the heat of the day. There is also a fireplace around which guests enjoy morning coffee, and evening drinks. Inclusive: • Accommodation in luxury rooms with en-suite bathroom facilities • Professional and qualified guides • All meals, coffee/tea, water, juice at breakfast • All bush walks and game drives Exclusive: • Transport between Johannesburg / Pretoria and the meeting point (R750 pp) • Transport between the meeting point and the camp (R150 pp) • Transport between Eastgate Airport and the camp (R350 pp) • Drinks – Cash only • Entrance fees (R100 pp) • Gratuities • Items of a personal nature • Travel insurance

he Soutpansberg stretches 130 kilometres from west to east through the Limpopo region. The salt pans situated at the foot of its north western slopes are still mined, and the area incorporates natural forests and indigenous bush characterised by the remarkable form of the baobab, wonderful wildlife, a profusion of birds and exiting adventure opportunities. The region boasts one of the most varied natural, geological, archaeological and cultural systems in the world and has a fascinating history, offering visitors the ‘Salt of the Earth’, the best of culture, history and nature.

Mapungubwe National Park. My guide Musa accompanied me to the Elim district and to my delight we spent a lot of time on foot. We stopped at a local hospital and explored a small market that had blossomed next to a taxi rank. We mingled with barbers and had a look in a SPAR supermarket, where surprisingly, the fridges were filled with a mixture of pig’s ears and noses, chicken feet and intestines. From here we continued to a little village where we walked around, and were greeted by some of Musa’s friends. Musa is very well-spoken and during the whole trip, which took several hours, he explained very eloquently and enthusiastically what I was seeing, what life is like for the Elim people, and why they are happy to share their shops, homes and lives, even if just for a little while, with us. We visited a pottery run by local women and a very talented wood carver, who also makes music and plays in a local band.

Set in these mountains you will find Madi a Thavha, a 4 star lodge run by a lovely Dutch lady, Marcelle, who over the last eight years has managed to establish sustainable working relationships with the local artists and communities. What you will see and experience here is real life, not a re-enactment for the sake of tourism. You will be taken by real people, to real people living in real villages doing real work, to earn real money.

The Venda and Tsonga people of the region are very artistic and love to share their work and knowledge with people who are genuinely interested, and compared to the rest of South Africa, they still live very much according to a traditional set of beliefs and customs. They are a very warm and welcoming people, and you will leave a great learning experience richer.

The tours can be done in the privacy of your own vehicle and picnic lunches are included. This makes each tour not only very affordable, but also very personal. There are plenty of options to choose from – from overnight programs to day programs, ranging from the close-by Elim to the mysterious Lake Fundudzi, wood-carving and pottery workshops as well as day trips to

What I find so amazing about the people is that all parties involved understand and embrace their interdependency - each person’s success is linked to the success of the projects and programs they undertake together. This is a rare thing. Normally communities receive ‘help’ without being asked what they need, they are given projects without the training to make them a

Travel SA success, and when it doesn’t work; people don’t understand what went wrong. Madi a Thavha runs on the principles of Fair Trade Tourism and has a genuine atmosphere of mutual respect with all people involved, intrinsically motivated to make your stay with them a special one. Besides cultural tours, there are also some spectacular walking and mountain bike trails for those who prefer to immerse themselves into nature. Louis Trichardt is a three and a half hour drive from Johannesburg and is an excellent base to spend a few days to explore the Venda and Tsonga culture, myths and legends, and to discover the unspoiled nature of the Soutpansberg and Limpopo valley. The region is a well-worth a stop-over for a night or two when travelling to the Kruger National Park, Mapungubwe, and the bush camps at Tuli Block in Botswana or the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

alvinia is a small town about 400 kilometres from Cape Town in the Karoo region. This is a town with many facets and untold surprises. The spectacular annual spring flower miracle is one of the main natural tourist attractions. A little bit of rain and the landscape explodes into a memorable exhibition. Imagine seeing 250 flowers per square meter over hundreds of hectares, hundreds and thousands of them creating the most breathtaking display - a sight beyond description. Displays usually reach their peak towards mid August and last until the end of September. The region is also home to many unique bird species, reptiles and other wildlife. Museums tell fascinating stories of communities, and their histories, and the Calvinia Museum is no exception. Accommodated in the old synagogue, farming activities from the early years are depicted among the bucket pumps, flourmill, cobbling and blacksmith workshops as well as soap and candle-making utensils. The history of the Merino sheep (which originated from Spain as a present from the King of Spain to the King of Holland) and wool farming can be explored while the Hantam Meat Festival held during the last weekend of August is every carnivore’s dream. Lamb and mutton are prepared in numerous mouthwatering local recipes to tempt visitors. Tourists can amble down Calvinia’s “onderdorp” and see the past as reflected in the various architectural styles: fine Cape Dutch, Victorian, Edwardian and Georgian buildings. Calvinia’s greatest asset, however, is its people; the harsh, desolate conditions have produced a rare breed of people, rich in spirit, creativity and independence. The 2750 hectare Akkerendam Nature Reserve was established in the late 1960’s and can be found just outside Calvinia. This magical place incorporates the majestic towering Hantam Mountain. The reserve is a proclaimed bird sanctuary with more than 65 bird species, such as the fairy flycatcher, the black-headed canary, and layard’s tit-babbler. The Karee dam provides an oasis for the many migrating birds.

6

TravelmagSA • Issue 11

The two hiking trails are an excellent way of exploring unspoilt nature across the Hantam Mountain, one being relatively easier than the other. The Karebook Trail, which runs along the foot of the Hantamsberg, is a short walk of three kilometers whereas the Steerboom Trail takes seven hours. Both trails allow visitors to discover the marvellous flora of the Hantamsberg region. You can expect to spot the endangered sterkboom as well as the magnificent star tree, which is unique to the region. Visitors can also enjoy a picnic and relax within the stunning scenery. The reserve is open daily and there is no entrance fee. For those who reach the summit of the mountain, there is a view that literally lets you see forever on a clear day.

The guesthouse works closely with the community, bringing in local talent to perform cultural dances and singing, providing guests a very local and authentic cultural experience. They offer day tours of Calvinia, trips to the Akkerendam Nature Reserve, wildflower excursions when in season, as well as outings to nearby attractions and farms to explore local life on these farms. The guesthouse caters for up to 50 guests and Hantamkraal Restaurant is a popular unique 60-seater restaurant with an

open fire, which prides itself on its traditional Hantam food - the best tripe and bobotie in Namakwaland, lamb pie baked in tin cups and delicious baked puddings. Fritz says, “My greatest pleasure is giving people the opportunity to put food on their table and assisting the local community by creating more jobs.” He is a role model to the kids in the community, and his message to them is never to let your circumstances hold you back, rather, let it be the reason to fight for what you believe in and to live your dreams.”

ichael Bagraim is a graduate of Rhodes University where he earned his BA in Political Science and his LLB.

Michael has an impressive clientele and a reputation for being the ‘go to’ man on issues pertaining to Labour Law. He is the official legal advisor for the Trade Union Directory and is a former member of the Department of Trade and Industry Task Team that was responsible for assessing labour legislation, and the development thereof. He currently advises nationwide corporations on the restructuring and management of their labour forces and he is now also offering his expertise to TravelmagSA readers.

YOU NEED TO TREAT EMPLOYEES WHO HAVE ANNOUNCED THEIR PREGNANCY WITH “KID GLOVES” An interesting case arose in the Labour Court of South Africa in Johannesburg in a matter between an employer and an employee who was on probation and who had not been performing properly, and she chose to announce that she was pregnant. The pregnant employee claimed that she was dismissed because of her pregnancy and therefore the dismissal was automatically unfair. The parties did try and conciliate their dispute but to no avail. The dispute was in turn referred to the Labour Court where the employee had claimed that the basis of the dismissal was on account of her pregnancy. The employee sought maximum compensation i.e. two years salary. The employer stated that the employee should not have referred her dispute to the Labour Court as in fact they did not dismiss her. The employer said that the termination of the employment relationship was by mutual consent. The employer said that the agreement entered into between the parties was that she would leave within two weeks and that she agreed to this termination. The employer produced a letter which was signed by the employee. The Court had to investigate whether in fact there was a dismissal and whether the letter of notice of termination of employment could be translated into a dismissal. Furthermore, if in fact the letter did constitute a dismissal and not a termination by mutual consent then the Court had to take the next step and investigate whether the dismissal was fair.

Business - Africa Travel Week 2014 TravelmagSA had the pleasure of chatting to David Paterson, Exhibition Manager, International Luxury Travel Market (ILTM), WTM Africa Event Manager Polly Magraw, and Marketing Manager Kate Shepherd to find out about their vision for Africa Travel Week and Tourism in Africa in 2014. David joined ILTM in March 2011 and has recently been promoted to manage the three key regional events in the global ILTM portfolio that now comprise ILTM Japan, ILTM Africa and ILTM Spa. David has built his considerable expertise in association with the ILTM Asia brand and his strong relationships with the luxury travel community is second to none, from luxury hotels, resorts and experiences to key members of the media. With reference to your statement, “2013 Exhibitors have seen a return of twelve times their investment and the forecast is that this will increase by 50% in 2014.” What is Reed Travel Exhibitions Vision for Tourism in Africa 2014? From the feedback we have had from ILTM Africa 2013 exhibitors in terms of their ROI from this event, together with the growth rate that Africa is looking at for 2014, the future appears to be very bright for African Tourism. Africa has one of the highest growth rates in the world surpassing even Asia, in terms of inbound and the outbound market, and we believe that the time is right for Africa to take a bigger role on the global tourism stage. David Paterson, Exhibition Manager, ILTM, Reed Travel Exhibitions, UK

With South Africa being a new and promising emerging market, do the world leaders in luxury travel and international accredited buyers recognise South Africa as a gateway to other African Countries? Historically, South Africa is often seen as the main hub for luxury travel in Africa and especially those seeking a safari experience, but people taking longer trips are increasingly branching out into other destinations. However with the improvement in airlift throughout the continent, other countries in Africa are finding their own identity with the discerning luxury travellers, who are more and more knowledgeable about the wider African destinations they may be looking to explore. How is this expected to impact business and economic growth in South Africa? We understand the number of South African people engaging in outbound travel and tourism will continue to grow. Much of this growth is set to be driven by the rise of the travel and tourism

culture among South Africa’s nascent middle class, which continues to grow unabated. Will these discerning Luxury travellers go directly into Africa and bypass South Africa? If anything, I think South Africa is gaining in prominence for the luxury traveller. With many diverse and wonderful experiences, it is the perfect destination for those with uber-luxurious tastes. ILTM will be showcasing the latest in African Luxury Travel Experiences - with destinations like Zimbabwe, Malawi and Cape Town being amongst the top places to visit in 2014. Is the focus moving towards luxury Travel? In terms of local infrastructure and airlift, destinations in Africa that would not have been reachable in the past are increasingly able to welcome luxury travellers. Right across Africa, people are now finding the hidden gems that they would not have been able to find in the past. Does South Africa and Africa meet the criteria required for those passionate about Luxury Travel? Absolutely, luxury travel is not just about fantastic lodging in a beautiful Parisian Hotel it is really about a unique, authentic experiences that will create real memories. Africa provides this more than any place in the world. There is a wide raft of offerings in Africa and it is the best that you can find with safari, beach, and whale watching to name a few – there is something for everyone. Paterson says in closing: “We have an on-going commitment to these events and the future of African tourism. I welcome the opportunity to discuss ILTM Africa with TravelmagSA readers and look forward to hearing from you.”

WTM Africa Exhibition Manager at Reed Travel Exhibitions Polly Magraw, has been with Reed Travel Exhibitions ‘ head office in London for 11 years working across a number of the leading travel trade events in the world including WTM in London, Arabian Travel Market and launched the successful WTM Latin America last year in Brazil. Polly is now heading up the launch of World Travel Market Africa, taking place in Cape Town May 2nd and 3rd 2014. Kate Shepherd has several years’ experience working in event marketing having worked on a number of leading exhibitions and conferences across the world. She joined Reed Exhibitions at their head office in the UK as Marketing Manager in September of 2013 and is responsible for the launch event WTM Africa taking place 2-3 May in Cape Town. With Africa now being a global player in the leisure, business and luxury tourism sectors; how does this contribute to the Vision of WTM for 2014? The vision is very clear for WTM Africa, the whole purpose for coming into the market and choosing to do this now, is that the market is ripe for an international event that has the global reach

8

TravelmagSA • Issue 11

WTM Africa Event Manager Polly Magraw, and Marketing Manager Kate Shepherd

that can really allow Africa to take a leading role on the global stage. The market has not been underperforming as such, but it has not yet reached its full potential. There are markets like the Latin American Market that have overtaken Africa, and there is no real reason for this other than possibly a lack of direction, or perhaps not the right type of event in Africa to

Business - Africa Travel Week 2014 galvanise everybody into action. Our position is clear – first and foremost it is important that we are delivering the right business contacts. All of Reed’s Travel Exhibitions are about delivering the right contacts. We host 20 different exhibitions in 12 different countries. This means we have events in every continent. Tourism is one of largest growth sectors in the African Continent, and the World Travel and Tourism Council is predicting some 5% growth over the next two years, which is huge, in comparison to other markets throughout the world. Albeit from a smaller base it is actually a faster growing industry sector than say in Asia. So WTM Africa is about delivering the right business contacts, which is fundamental to the success of any of our events. Secondly, it is about giving the African Travel Industry a voice. What we are offering with WTM Africa is an even playing field, we do not have vested interests in the market here, we want to be running a successful event for all of our stakeholders, so it is not politically driven, we are very neutral and we can offer all of the African markets an even playing field; inbound and outbound, 40% will be from South Africa, 40% from Sub Saharan Africa and 20% from Non-African destinations. We are focusing on the South African, and also on other African markets like the Nigerian market, and the growing Middle class of South Africans that have a thirst to start travelling for the first time. Shepherd and Magraw agree, “The vision for the event is about investing in the industry here in South Africa and across the continent, longevity, and investing in the market, mirrored to WTM London and ATM in Dubai, they are in it for the long term.” Emerging Market Tourism to Africa is driving new travel demands, which include family orientated and children’s travel and safari’s, how will WTM assist in promoting these markets? “Emerging markets will play a significant role in travel as the industry is now having to look away from traditional source markets. With some European markets and the US stagnating or in decline because of the economy, it is important for businesses to reach these new emerging markets” says Magraw. This is why we are bringing in the Hosted Buyer program with key markets such as Brazil, Argentina, India and the Middles East represented. Particularly India and the Middle East are focusing more on ‘familycentric’ travel. Africa now needs to look at shifting its product offering to cater to those markets. They are not looking for the same products as the traditional UK, and

German travellers. Magraw says, “In terms of the Hosted Buyer program which is a key part of the event, we are delivering 300 strong, pre-qualified senior buyers of African and international products.” It is also important to bring in buyers from countries such as Nigeria and Kenya, looking at South Africa’s back garden and not just long haul – driving inter-regional travel and bringing all of Africa to the event. There are many Pan African travellers flying into South Africa, using it as a port of departure to other countries. South Africa is the feeder for the inbound and outbound market. Shepherd clarifies, “that it is important to note that it is a Pan African event as well, although the show is being held in South Africa and SA is the largest market the show will cover the whole continent as well as international destinations for the outbound market. WTM is giving everyone the chance to promote their destinations and products.” Africa and Indian Ocean Islands destinations are becoming increasingly popular, how does WTM play a role in delivering new customers and new business to WTM Exhibitors? Our Hosted Buyer program plays a big role in bringing the right contacts for our exhibitors as does our targeted visitor campaign. If we are covering Indian Ocean destinations for example, we would bring in the right contacts for the right exhibitors. We are currently running 17 Hosted Buyer programs around the world, and we always try to fulfil the expectations of the exhibitors, if they are looking to focus on specific markets. In closing Magraw and Shepherd offer the following insights. One of our main aims is to make World Travel Market Africa the new meeting place for the African Travel Industry, it is not an exclusive event, and it is open to everyone in the Travel Industry. A place where the industry can come to learn, engage and conduct business. We want to provide educational opportunities with our event program, which covers key issues - for example responsible tourism, and how it is relevant for a business and how businesses can still profit with sustainable tourism. We will also offer sessions covering business travel, a key area of the travel industry within South Africa, as well as sessions looking at blogging and how to engage with bloggers and travel technology trends. We have taken the format of events from Dubai and London’s WTM and adapted them to the market here in Africa to ensure that the show offers something for everyone.

Lovebirds will find

round trip of three destinations provides a romantic getaway sure to inspire devotion.

Limpopo Province

Mashovhela Lodge, nestled in the Morning Sun Nature Reserve in the Soutpansberg Mountains is imbued with the ancient lovestories of the abandoned Venda settlement that it occupies in the local area’s national heritage site.

the perfect destination this

Valentine’s Day

Dr Hans Hahn and his wife Ingrid, a truly inspirational couple, developed the Lodge with the intention of minimising its ecological footprint and they use renewable energy wherever possible. This is the ideal place to get away from everyday frustrations and find peace and tranquillity in the intimate en-

area and Venda mythology, and loves to share his knowledge. After a perfect day, as the sun sets, the rhythmic sound of the drums will lead you to the restaurant and the steady beat will invite you to join in a Venda dance. This dance honours the chef for the memorable and scrumptious feast that is to be consumed. After dinner, most guests head back to their rooms to fall asleep to the hypnotic sounds of the bush. For the real romantic, however, there are hammocks in the trees and a night spent under the stars holds its own special allure. A short drive away is the four star Mopane Bush Lodge, a tranquil bush retreat located on

suite chalets. Family friendly units are also available. In this piece of heavenly bio-diversity one can wake up to the call of bush babies and at night listen to the hooting of the Giant Eagle Owls, the chirping of the cicadas and the croaking of the resident frogs. Even better is to sip a cocktail or a glass of award winning South African wine whilst watching the Black Eagles returning to their nests at sunset. On offer are game drives that take advantage of the wonderful weather at sunrise or sunset, as well as exploratory hikes or cosy picnics in the bush. The local Venda man who helped build the lodge is on hand for Venda cultural and scenic tours. Having grown up in the area, he is a walking encyclopedia on the

The position of this Bush Lodge allows for easy access to the Mapungubwe National Park with its abundance of wild life; the Mapungubwe World Heritage Landscape where local guides will enchant visitors with stories about gold artefacts and the ancient civilizations and the Limpopo River and its confluence with the Shashe River. It is a hot spot for birding enthusiasts with over 400 bird species including the elusive Collared Palm Thrush, the magnificent Blue cheeked Bee-eater and the Broad-billed Roller bird.

Romantic Destinations For the more rugged and more adventurous spirit, there are 4 x 4 eco trails, which allow guests to explore the wild and ravishing landscapes, or guests can visit the mystical and inspirational Baobab San Rock Art nearby. The Lodge offers accommodation for 16 guests in eight secluded thatched en-suite chalets. The whole experience is rounded off with a licensed lodge bar, a swimming pool with a waterfall and a lapa. Meals and sun downers are served in the boma around the fire under the sparkling African skies.

From intimate forest hideaways to snuggling in the city, travel and romance have been forever interlaced. Lauren Austin from Portfolio Collection shares her Top Romantic Destinations to make your Valentine’s Day unforgettable.

or the untouchable Cape Town beach experience, couples should head to Beach Villa in Melkbosstrand. The honeymoon suite at the top of the guesthouse has spectacular views over the bay which can be enjoyed from the bed, the Jacuzzi and even the steam bath. Owner Walter prides himself on delivering the personal touches, which turn a romantic getaway into a lifelong memory.

If your ideal romantic break is in the heart of the Mother City, Atlantic Suites Camps Bay ticks all the right boxes. With breath-taking sea views, rim-flow pools and even Mulberry silk linen, these ultra-luxurious suites are for lovers who love the finer things in life as well as each other. Owners Sally and Ian are on hand to ensure you are pampered to your heart’s content and that no need goes unmet. From high tea on arrival to evening candles lit in the Jacuzzi adorned bathroom, this is a must for couples looking to make high end memories. Surrounded by the majestic Cederberg Mountains, the cottages have the distinction of being equally romantic in both winter and summer. Spend lazy summer days horse riding through the valleys or canoeing down the clear water river. In winter, snuggle up to your significant other in front of a roaring fire with a bottle of Pinotage and watch the falling snow smother the mountain peaks. Foodie duos who would prefer to spend their couple time relishing top notch cuisine should head straight over to The Robertson Small Hotel, where chef extraordinaire Reuben Riffel’s gastronomic pleasures bring connoisseurs from far and wide. Reuben’s at the Robertson is the hotel’s signature restaurant which spills out onto the peaceful courtyard for romantic al fresco dining. Their warm hospitality in a country retreat setting makes this the ideal spot to relax in between fabulous meals.

For private dining under star-studded skies, bottles of bubbly in your outdoor Jacuzzi and a king size bed perched on a wooden deck in a tree, there is only one place for couples to check in. Lovers can commune with nature in outdoor showers or relax on private viewing decks with sweeping vistas across the reserve. Host Christine personally takes you on game drives before depositing you back at the boma, where chef Jabulani lives up to his name and serves up a slice of happiness on a plate beside a crackling bonfire.

In the heart of the unspoilt iSimangaliso World Heritage Park, Thonga reels in honeymooners with long walks on pristine, almost deserted beaches where you are literally the only people around, followed by sundowners at shimmering Lake Sibaya. After a day’s exploring, you’re warmly welcomed back to your charming chalet on stilts, a throwback to the days of Robinson Crusoe, before settling down to a delicious meal. If you travel between November and February, you may be lucky enough to witness the rare sight of turtles laying their eggs, or hatchlings returning to the sea.

Another must visit for bush romance is the appropriately named Thanda Private Game Reserve, named for the Zulu word for love. The nine luxury bush villas each have a private infinity pool, viewing deck and private sala. Couples can expect romantic five star safaris united with traditional Zulu culture. For those whose getaway is not complete with couple’s therapy of the rejuvenation kind, you can relax and revitalise in the world class spa.
