I was fortunate to be invited to the very first Readathon at the Inthembihle Lsen School, on Friday 28th Feb 2014. I was asked to informally judge the children, and to tell them a little bit about the benefits of reading. Wow - what a privilege to listen to these brave students, some of them so tiny, come up to the front and read. One little girl had only been reading for six weeks, and although we did select a winner from the foundation and intersen phases, they were all winners. Thanks to kind donations, we were able to purchase small gifts of sweets for each pupil that participated and to buy books for the winners.

Cruising Trends for 2014

Interview TravelmagSA asked Mr Sugen Pillay, Business Development Director Thebe Reed Exhibitions, to tell us more about Africa Travel Week 2014. Thebe Reed Exhibitions are the organisers of the Inaugural Africa Travel Week taking place in Cape Town at the ICC 28 April – 03 May 2014. Mr Sugen Pillay, Business Development Director Thebe Reed Exhibitions Can you give us an overview of Africa Travel Week? Africa Travel Week (ATW) is unique – this is the first time a platform this significant has been created on one continent. With three co-locating events covering three key sectors of the travel industry: leisure (WTM Africa), luxury travel (ILTM Africa) and MICE (IBTM Africa), we believe that in this format there they will be an unrivalled opportunity for creating business, not only have some exhibitors chosen to attend more than one event, but it also gives those Hosted Buyers (who match the pre-qualification process involved) an opportunity to do the same. All the events take place in one venue but at different times in the week. What trends and highlights do you envisage coming out of Africa Travel Week? We are really excited to bring to Africa the education and informative conference sessions that are synonymous with the international brands that make up Africa Travel Week. ATW will bring 20 industry related themes to the fore in support of the three events. Subjects as diverse as Responsible Tourism, Sustainable Business, Economics, Tourism Education, Technology and Blogging will be discussed in various forums, as well as Trends that effect travel into and out of Africa, will be revealed in the WTM Africa Vision Conference presented by Euromonitor. Who should be attending Africa Travel Week? ILTM Africa and IBTM Africa are very specific ‘by invitation only’ table top events with African exhibitors engaging with carefully handpicked hosted buyers that very closely match the business needs in their specific sectors. WTM Africa, however is aligned to its sister events and caters to exhibitors in South Africa, Pan Africa and World Wide. This B2B travel exhibition event is open to professionals in the industry locally and internationally. How have Buyers been attracted and which countries will be attending? The hosted buyer programmes have delivered quality buyers for all three events from over 40 countries so far, including buyers from all over Africa and beyond.ILTM Africa and IBTM Africa’s buyers are all hosted and WTM Africa’s hosted buyers programme will deliver as many as 300 new buyers to Africa all with direct mandates to contract African product. WTM Africa will also see visitors from all over the globe attending.

6

TravelmagSA • Issue 12

How does South Africa and Africa benefit from these new events? Reed Travel Exhibitions is focused on delivery and also longevity. This is evident with WTM London reaching its 35th event this year and its equivalent in Dubai, ATM, which is now in its 21st year. Tourism is a key economic driver in Sub Saharan Africa, and the events that make up Africa Travel Week will mirror Reed Travel Exhibitions’ flagship events in other regions in the world providing a catalyst for economic growth. In the latest World Bank Tourism report it cites that tourism accounts for one in every 20 jobs in Sub Saharan Africa and is one of the few industries on the continent in which women are well represented as employees and managers, far outpacing many other countries and regions in tourism growth. All indications are that those seeking for a lucrative emerging market should look to Africa for that growth potential. WTTC (World Travel & Tourism Council) predicts growth of 4.8% over the next 10 years for Africa, growing at practically the same rate as the overall African economy and making tourism the fourth fastest growing sector in the continent. Market Intelligence organisation Euromonitor’s latest summary states: “The number of South African people engaging in outbound travel and tourism is expected to continue growing - the total number of outbound departures is expected to increase to 6.9 million by 2017. Much of this growth is set to be driven by the rise of the travel and tourism culture among South Africa’s nascent middle class, which continues to grow unabated.” UNWTO stats for 2013 show that Africa’s inbound tourism grew by 5%. The events of Africa Travel Week, support all these findings and are committed to assisting the growth of tourism in this region.

Pillay closes, “Whilst it is exciting for us to launch in 2014, it does not end here. Our expectations for WTM Africa go beyond our inaugural show. We expect that WTM Africa will be the leading travel and tourism event in Africa. Thebe Reed Exhibitions and Reed Travel Exhibitions is focused on delivery and also longevity and this is evident with WTM.”

INTERNATIONAL ART & EVENTS On 1st April, the Saatchi Gallery will open Pangaea: New Art From Africa and Latin America. Taking its title from the prehistoric landmass that conjoined Africa and Latin America, this major survey reunites the two former sister continents by bringing together the work of 16 of their contemporary artists. The exhibition celebrates and explores the parallels between their distinctly diverse cultures and creative practices, as they begin to receive recognition in the increasingly globalised art world. In Europe and the USA, art has typically advanced through a constant renewal of innovative ideas and movements. We are now experiencing an important global shift as artists seek to explore new art in regions outside their immediate geographical and historic context for inspiration. The desire by artists and their audiences to discover fresh influences from a broader body of work has inspired the recent preoccupation of museums to broaden their Eurocentric collections. Against this backdrop, the artists in Pangaea: New Art from Africa and Latin America

respond to present day complexities in diverse and innovative ways. Years of colonial rule, rapid urban expansion, migration and political and economic unrest remain subjects for many of the artists whose reflections on the richness of their environment translate into an intense visual experience.

Bot River flaunts whiskers at Barrels & Beards 2014

Call it hairy or somewhat scary, but for the closeknit winemaking community of Bot River in the Overberg, its annual grape harvest comes with a self-imposed shaving ban. This year the luxuriant growth of post-harvest facial fur and wacky whiskers will once again be revealed at its annual Barrels & Beards celebration on Saturday, 5 April 2014. Now in its 3rd year, the ever-popular Bot River Barrels & Beards, one of the quirkiest wine events on the circuit, invites enthusiasts to share in the fruit of the winemakers’ labour and to have fun with the locals at the same time. For more information or to book tickets contact Nicolene Heyns at nicolene@botriverwines.co.za or call 082 852 6547. www.botriverwines.com
