NamakwA Flower Route the perfect escape this Spring
N
amakwa is the flower watching tourist destination in South-Africa, and flower season is from August to October each spring. People always ask when the flowers will bloom each year, the Namakwa Tourism office monitors our natural landscape closely for the first signs of spring, which is the presence of the first Namakwa Daisies, and they then report on the progress of the flower season. The end of each flower season is indicated by the blooming of the purple Vygies (pronounced fay-gh-ease) also known as iceplants or midday flowers, they are small shrubby succulents that transform into a beautiful, kaleidoscope of iridescent colour of brilliant pinks, purple, magenta, yellow and white. Namakwa Tourism issues a flower update every six days during this time.

Tips when watching the flowers • The flowers are open between 11:00 am and 15:00 pm during day time • The sun must be out for flowers to open • The day temperature must be at least 18 degrees • Flowers are not open on rainy or overcast days. What to wear when watching flowers • Long pants when walking around in the veld. • Comfortable shoes Advice to tourists • Book your accommodation in advance, as this is a very popular time of year.

The Namakwa flower line is available from August to October, seven days a week, including Public Holidays. Most towns along the flower routes have fuel station(s) and ATM’s and mobile reception.
Flower maps Namakwa/West Coast maps are available at all tourism offices in the Namakwa and West Coast regions as well as accommodation establishments, restaurants, fuel stations and Tourist stalls, National Parks an Nature Reserves. Book this amazing guided Tour The tour begins at Namakwa Tourism Centre in Springbok and lasts up to three hours.
The Blue Mine The first copper mine in the Southern Hemisphere which was mined by Cornish and local miners. Cornish architecture is visible in Springbok and surrounding towns like Okiep and Concordia, and tourists can view the monument of the Blue Mine. The Anglican Church An Anglican minister was sent from England to minister to the English mine workers and while local inhabitants also joined the church, they could not make use of the church building after they were relocated to Bergsig during the Apartheid era.
The Springbok Fountain Springbok was named after this original water source, which is situated between the Springbok and Masonic hotels.
Smoke Stack Visit the Smoke Stack which is at the end of the Blue Mine Hiking Trail. This Smoke Stack has a Cornish architectural style for Cornish mine workers from Cornwell in England came to work in the Springbokfontein copper mine.
Namaqualand Museum Here you will be introduced to the cultural exhibition of the Namakwa region, that is known for its cultural history. On site is the historic Dutch Reformed Church building, and an open door cultural exhibition of donkey carts and ovens.
Coffee Avenue Tourists could have a cup of coffee at one of the local restaurants, enjoy Roosterbrood and visit Klipkoppie.

Cathedral Peak Hotel by Sarah Tringham
N
estled in the unspoiled surroundings of the Drakensberg mountain range, a World Heritage Site, lies Cathedral Peak Hotel, one of South Africa’s premier resort hotels. Just 250 kilometres from Durban and 400 km from Johannesburg, Cathedral Peak is easily accessible, to its many visitors, from all over South Africa and abroad. Since the hotel first opened to guests in 1939, the van der Riet family has succeeded in offering warm hospitality, combined with exceptional service and value for money. The rooms on offer range from supreme to family rooms, and there are wheel chair accessible rooms, with all the doors leading into and from public areas being wheel chair friendly. The Superior room which I stayed in was absolutely perfect, with its under floor heating, in both the room and the bathroom, and its fabulously comfy bed. I loved the turn down service, a sweet story and mint chocolate on the pillow, it really completed the day. I have to start with the most important element of any holiday… FOOD.
The buffet was the best I have ever had, and continues to leave me wanting. Each night there was a huge roast, offering potatoes that were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, perfectly cooked roast beef with Yorkshire pudding and homemade gravy. With loads more options available such as stir fry with prawns, and fresh veg noodles or rice to tailor make your dish. The puddings were totally mouth-watering, chocolate mousse, éclairs, hot puddings with custard, that were so well welcomed that there was no thought to going back for seconds, thirds and fourths before ending off with coffee and cheese. Breakfast is not to be missed, omelettes with fillings of your choice made right in front of you, along with fresh fruit, yoghurt, pancakes and all the trimmings anyone needs for a perfect start to the day. After my first dinner and breakfast a walk/hike was in order, being in a beautiful part of the Drakensburg the only choice was which hike I would do, ranging from easy to challenging. I decided on Doreen Falls. It really was a beautiful hike and suitable for most ages, the falls provided a refreshing spot to sit and rest while soaking up the surroundings. I arrived back in time for mid-morning tea on the terrace, with a view only the Drakensburg can offer, a cup of coffee and biscuits went

- Retreat to the Mountains down well and we were all fuelled up for a game of mini golf. Cathedral Peak Hotel has so much to offer and it made me reminisce about when I was a child going on holiday with my folks. Only seeing my parents before dinner to bath and go down to the dining room to re-join friends made on the day. Kids will not be bored nor will the adults, for Dads there is nine hole golf course with a bar, and moms can enjoy the spa and terrace restaurant while the kids play with endless options even on cold days.

Champagne Shuttle Driving in style
There is nothing better than comfort and luxury when it comes to travel and Champagne shuttles based in Johannesburg, is that to a T, as I experienced first-hand. I was informed via email who my driver was along with his contact details and he was a half hour early, which put my mind at ease when I saw him at my gate. I also received a call the day before to confirm time of pick up and place of drop off. There were refreshments for us and he was well mannered, which reflects the high standard of Champagne Shuttles. We were two young girls traveling for the first time with them and I highly recommend and suggest this form of travel. We returned relaxed after our weekend away, and we enjoyed the added bonus of seeing the beautiful country side of South Africa as passengers. The service and costing is worth every cent and is great for visitors from overseas, honeymooners or if you just don’t want to drive the distance yourself – it is the way to travel.

B.T.D.T Zomatos, Tomato’s, You want this App Zomatos celebrated their seventh birthday in true style on the 16 July 2015 and is also celebrating their growth as they will soon be hiring 60 new candidates to join their team. Over the past few months, the global restaurant discovery app Zomato has added extended its services beyond just restaurant search and discovery, and Zomato will soon allow people to order food online using Zomato Order. South African users will be able to order whatever they’re craving from thousands of local restaurants, directly from the restaurant’s listing on the Zomato app and website.
Zomato may soon be the only app one ever needs to dine out.
Just last month, the company acquired restaurant reservation platform NexTable, and will soon launch its table reservations app Zomato Book. In February this year, Zomato Cashless was introduced in Dubai, to allow customers to make cashless payments at restaurants via the Zomato app. Given Zomato’s aggressive product growth over the past few months and all that is in the pipeline,
Zomato’s mobile app is available for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone, and can be downloaded for free from zomato.com/mobile.
Zomato is a restaurant search app, providing in-depth information for over a million restaurants across 22 countries. Zomato’s core content features include restaurant information such as scanned menus, and photos sourced by its massive feet-on-street team across over 500 cities. Interview TravelmagSA interviewed Carla da Silva, Regional Manager, Southern Africa & Latin America, Air Mauritius to find out more about the impact of the new Visa Regulations and the new Travel Law for minors. Q. Please tell us more about the new Visa regulations? A. South African regulations regard a child as any person under the age of 18 years. All children departing from and arriving in South Africa must produce an unabridged birth certificate reflecting the particulars of both parents along with their passport and visa if applicable. It is applicable to all nationalities.
Q.What are the major implications of the new law and how is this currently affecting tourism in South Africa? A.Under the new immigration regulations Airlines will be responsible for not only confirming valid visas for its passengers where applicable but also for confirming that all children travelling into and out of South Africa, whether accompanied by their parents or not, have a valid birth certificate. South Africa is a signatory to the Chicago Convention, the country and hence the airlines should only be accepting passports and applicable visas as valid identification documentation. Birth certificates are not deemed to be valid identification document under the Chicago Convention. Airlines are also not equipped or skilled to validate birth certificate for children or to establish if the birth certificate is falsified or if in a foreign language that the check-in agent

does not speak or understand. No other country in the world requires children to travel with a birth certificate in addition to their passport. South Africa’s tourism industry is an important economic sector for the country and contributes substantially to the national economy by sustaining existing and creating new jobs. In 2014, South Africa received 9,55- million foreign overnight tourists, an increase of 7.5% versus 2013.
Q.How does the new visa regulation affects the local as well as the inbound traveller? A. The direct impact of the requirement for all children travelling to South Africa to have a birth certificate is likely to be significant. This impact is a result of the hassle factor of having to comply with the regulations. Tourists will book other destinations that do not have the same level of complexity or difficulty when travelling with children. The loss to the industry and South African economy could be significant.
Q. How are tourism offices and ground handlers as a whole managing the new regulations to reduce the impact on Tourism in SA? A.The travel industry and airlines continue to engage government stakeholders in this regard. All incidents, specific statistics are being recorded and monitored. Such information is being shared with all relevant stakeholders.
Interview Q.What advice do you have for travellers and, what advice do you have for operators within the industry? A.Communication is vital. Communicating as effectively and as widely is imperative. We advise all parents to access unabridged birth certificates for their children and adhere to the regulations. All International airlines, bodies and associations have consulted and communicated. There are however challenges as this is a first globally.
Q. Please comment on the new SA travel law for minors protecting children from child trafficking. A. Child trafficking is a major issue worldwide, not only for South Africa. The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of the International Child Abduction has established a guide of good practices with regards to preventing +-218 child abductions. This specific guide does not make reference to any birth
certificates; it refers to parents’ consent for issuing of travel documentation and more importantly proper implementation of boarder control checks on travel documentation. Various sources have indicated that most of the trafficking occurs within South Africa which means that it is internal so aviation is not the mode of transport being used.
Q. Why is Mauritius still one of the most sought after destinations for South Africans? And what are your product offerings for 2015? A. arla da Silva, Air Mauritius Regional Manager: Southern Africa and Latin America, has 21 years’ experience in the aviation industry. Da Silva embarked upon her illustrious aviation career, first representing South Africa as an international flight attendant for South African Airways (SAA.) From a flight attendant, she joined the airport ground crew where she fulfilled roles in public relations and reservations at South African Airways and The Royal Dutch Airlines, respectively. Da Silva then joined the Sales division of Air France South Africa, where she was exposed to Global & Key Account Management. She was then head hunted to join SAA in the role of Key Account Manager. Da Silva’s core duties included, amongst others, account management of Top 100 JSE Listed Companies where she was later promoted to Senior Manager and moved on to head-up the Corporate Portfolio at SAA. Along with this title came the responsibility for a turnover of R1.7 billion; management of a staff complement of 10 direct reports and achieving eight percent revenue growth performance in 2007 and 2008, ahead of four percent industry growth.
In August 2007, da Silva was appointed Head of Global Sales & Distribution; SAA and was tasked with producing a turn-over of R15.9 billion. In addition, she was responsible for managing a budget of R800 million ~ along with a global team of 1,430 staff; offices in each continent and major countries across the globe.

Today, da Silva heads-up the Air Mauritius Southern Africa and Latin America operations. Within her current portfolio, she is responsible for airport operations, sales and marketing, reservations and ticketing operations, finance and human resource management, and is ultimately accountable for the P&L of this R385 million operation. In less than a year, an achievement of 22 percent in revenue growth versus the previous year was achieved, together with a cost reduction of 12 percent.
Da Silva has initiated a mentorship programme for women within the aviation sector. She is part of the Women’s Development Programme with Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) and BARSA. In addition, da Silva is a judge at the annual CEO Awards, Transport Awards and Gender Mainstreaming Awards with Business Engage Southern Africa. In terms of tertiary education; she completed her Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration, before pursuing her MBA. Da Silva was a member of the Student Representative Council during her MBA, and achieved a distinction for her thesis titled ~ Global Branded Alliances in the Aviation World.
Da Silva has gained sound operational and management experience on a global scale ~ during her career. She exhibits in-depth understanding as to the key drivers and many challenges, which organisations face today. Her passion for driving sales, containing cost and adding value to both internal and external stakeholders, has been demonstrated in the respective senior management roles which she has held. She is a member of the African Airline

hile the temperatures may be warm, Dubai provides perfectly for its summer conditions, and for the most part, unless you choose to lie on the beach you will not be affected by the warm summer sun. Understanding a little more about Ramadan, if visiting at this time, is essential. Bear in mind that while life in Dubai gets a slight tweak during Ramadan, all the usual activities carry on as per normal. Tensions boil and culminate in a confrontation that irrevocably changes the lives of those involved. The Ballet is an adaptation of Mr Coward’s debut play. Marc Goldberg has translated Mr Cowards loaded prose into movement that creates a slick and stylized perspective on the fascinating character dynamics that made the play so powerful in 1921. Musically we experience the unspoken tensions by the use of juxtaposing composers. Noël Coward’s live recordings of hits like ‘Poor Little Rich Girl’, ‘I Went to a Marvellous Party’ and ‘Mad about the Boy’ are combined with Mexican electronic composer Murcof’s very atmospheric and sophisticated style. CAPE TOWN TO PREMIERE MUSICAL VERSION OF ZAKE MDA’s HEART OF REDNESS Through the generous funding of the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, Cape Town Opera and Magnet Theatre are proud to present a new musical adaptation of the Zakes Mda novel Heart of Redness on stage at the Fugard Theatre from the 19th to the 22nd of August 2015 for four performances only, all commencing at 19h30. The multi-talented 15-member cast comprises of Magnet Theatre and UCT Drama School graduates and some of the Cape Town Opera’s youngest members who have come together to perform in this new production under the direction of Mark Fleishman with music by Neo Muyanga, movement direction by Jennie Reznek and designs by Craig Leo. named Nonqawuse commanded the Xhosa people to kill their cattle and burn their crops, promising that once they did so the spirits of their ancestors would rise and drive the occupying English into the ocean. The failed prophecy split the Xhosa into Believers and Unbelievers, dividing brother from brother, wife from husband, with devastating consequences. One hundred and fifty years later, the two groups’ descendants are at odds over plans to build a vast casino and tourist resort in the village, and Camugu is soon drawn into their heritage and their future. With the opening of Seelan Restaurant and Bar at the V&A Waterfront in mid-March 2014, he finally brought his dream to life!
His dream was to be in the kitchen cooking up a storm and exploring his creativity through food. With the guidance and training from some of the top chefs in the world, Seelan made his way into the kitchen, exploring his passion for cooking. Seelan developed his skills as a top chef, and was soon recognised as one worthy of managing a fine dining restaurant. Seelan was appointed as Head Chef at La Perla in Sea Point for many years, where his reputation as an award-winning chef grew and gained a huge following. Seelan later then moved on to The Grand Camps Bay and The Grand café and beach restaurant,Waterfront, which he continued offering excellent service with which he was synonymous. Shortly after he was called upon to open the Reserve Brasserie as its Head Chef, Seelan was presented with the opportunity to pursue his own dream and passion, to have his own restaurant. Seelan started up the Shimmy Beach Club as co-owner. Not long thereafter, with Shimmy growing in leaps and bounds, as Cape Town’s top hotspot, Seelan realised it was time to move on, as his passion was not only about restaurants, but cooking fine dishes for
The restaurant draws on lavish simple lunches taken in the South of France and unforgettable meals shared with friends in another of his favourite places, Barcelona. In particular, the seaside dining spot looks to recreate the joie de vivre (joy of life) that Seelan remembers so well about popular Saint-Tropez restaurant Le Grand Joseph. “We used to grab a table there, chat and sit for hours just watching the world go by,” he reminisces. “When I go overseas, I always eat where the locals eat: you get good value for money, good food, consistency and excellent service, you feel at home,” he adds. “That’s what I want to do here: create a destination spot that’s also a home for locals.” Seelan has compiled a very versatile menu with many of his signature dishes, like the Kingklip Tagliata, Pasta Vongole, Chopped Seelan Salad and Carpaccio De Thon (tuna Carpaccio). Apart from the old favourites though, there’s also a few innovative creations like slowcooked rotisserie duck, chicken and lamb (all done with a twist) are among the most popular original dishes like the Zwelet’s Duck Rice. Food has always been Mr Sundoo’s culture.
