obody enjoys having to tighten their belts, and that applies to travelers as well. Cape Town is rapidly becoming the holiday city of choice for local travellers on a budget – even for Capetonians themselves.
City Sightseeing
For those used to hopping on a plane for international travel, Cape Town is a world-class destination without the jetlag (or volatile exchange rates), and for those who like to explore locally, there’s so much to do, you never visit the same place twice. The big attractions come with a price tag, but if you think that many international visitors come from across the globe to tick Table Mountain or Robben Island off their bucket lists, then the ticket prices seem quite reasonable for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Save up and include those as part of your holiday or make the most of affordable Cape Town like a local. Cape Town Tourism has a great list of 50 things to do for under R50!

round (winter is surfing season); even if there’s a rare storm, you can sit and watch the amazing power of the ocean at work. The Atlantic Seaboard is best for catching the sunset, as it transforms the sky into surreal orange and purple shades. There is a new trend for travellers wanting to experience destinations like locals. Those visitors don’t want a brochure holiday, they want to taste obscure craft beers and find those hidden gems – little off-the-beaten track boutiques, tiny pop-up restaurants, enjoying up-and-coming local musicians while sipping on a cocktail. Suburbs like Kalk
S A T rav e l Bay or Woodstock reveal the unique, intimate offerings of such neighbourhoods. You can explore on the city centre on foot, taking in the variety of retail opportunities, architectural and historical places of interest and tempting coffee shops - read the chalk boards outside restaurants to see what specials are on offer such as two-for-one meal specials or “happy hours” at pubs. One of the benefits of a competitive tourist industry is that many venues offer deals at certain times of the year, and you could also get massive reductions on your accommodation.
There’s something for everyone: many local parks have lovely facilities for picnics, and there are also braai areas available in selected non-fire risk places. Township tours offer a vibrant glimpse of life in the kasi, and there are art galleries, museums, theatres, food markets and more that are enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Cape Town has something for everyone, from the backpacker with a modest budget to the explorer wanting to get immersed in the local lifestyle, there are many things to see, taste and experience that won’t leave visitors out of pocket. akoven is named after the renowned Boulder just off Barley Bay, that has a hole in its front, thereby giving the appearance of an oven door. Bakoven on the Atlantic Ocean, remains to be one of the most sought after areas in the Western Cape, as it is protected from the South Easter Winds with which Capetonians are all too familiar. There are three beaches, Big Beach, where the NSRI Sea rescue is based, providing a bay for swimming, Little Beach and Tiny Beach, both of which are set between the boulders in Barley Bay. In the 1900’s, Bakoven was a fishing harbor, and one of the few protected inlets in the area, fishing cottages were erected for the local fishermen who brought in their daily catch of snoek, mackerel and cob. In the 1940’s, beach front houses were built for honoured members of

the South African Army who fought during World War II, some of which still exist today, and are now South African National Heritage sites. Bakoven can be located from Camps Bay, which itself is an exclusive location providing a wonderful destination to visit, with its lavish hotels, beach front restaurants and boutique shops. Camps Bay Beach, a Blue Flag Beach, offers beach goers soft white sand, azure waters and spectacular views of the mountains. Beachgoers can also walk along Camps Bay Beach to Glen Beach, and experience the locals surfing some of the most sought after waves in the world. Bakoven and Camps Bay are 10 minutes’ drive from the famous Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town, on the one side, and Hout Bay and Chapmans Peak on the other.

N
adav Ossendryver founder and CEO of Latest Sightings is an accomplished young entrepreneur who used 21st century technology to develop the Latest Sightings App in order to inform visitors to national parks (as well as enthusiasts worldwide), where interesting animals and birds have just been spotted. The Latest Sightings Kruger YouTube Channel is the most watched South African channel with over 250 000 subscribers, and over 301 000 000 views worldwide. As a result of the success of the Latest Sightings YouTube channel, in 2014 a Film & Earn partnership programme was implemented - the best videos that are sent in are selected, and uploaded to the YouTube channel, and they have a good chance of going viral, in which case Latest Sightings shares the earnings 40/60 with the contributors. Latest Sightings also has a loyal community on Facebook with over 160 000 fans; Twitter with approximately 17 500 followers; and Instagram with nearly 14 000 followers. To assist this community, Latest Sightings through their expertise, have also developed long standing partnerships to assist with booking safari holidays to national parks.

Nadav Ossendryver founder and CEO of Latest Sightings Through the App, Latest Sightings has become an integral part of wildlife research, for example, teaming up with KNP Wild Dog Project, Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) and the Leopard Identification Project. The Latest Sightings community has been instrumental in saving wildlife. There are less than 200 African Wild Dogs in the Kruger National Park, and as they are one of the rarest carnivores in the park, they are of national conservation concern. Monitoring such a small population of African Wild Dogs
Young Achiever in such a large area is challenging, but Latest Sightings Kruger has made this task much easier. Latest Sightings Kruger gives tourists a simple to use platform to submit sightings to the EWT Kruger Wild Dog Project. This allows the EWT to follow up on packs in order to identify individuals to gain a better understanding of population trends, monitor changes in pack structures and dynamics, collar individuals and respond to injured animals caught in snares. In October 2015, Nadav represented Latest Sightings at the World Youth Wildlife Declaration in Vietnam. The team selected for their leadership, activism against rhino poaching and participation in the 2014 and 2015 World Youth Rhino Summits, presented the World Youth Wildlife Declaration to Asian government representatives and engaged directly with Vietnamese youth and leaders during their week-long visit. Operation Game Change (OGC) has high-level support from Vietnam’s important Ministries of Natural Resources and Environment and Agriculture and Rural Development, with support from the US State Department and US Embassy in Vietnam. Managed by the Freeland Foundation, it seeks to change behaviour, and catalyse action on an ongoing basis, through a series of events and activities in Vietnam, around illegal wildlife trade issues. Latest Sightings Mobile APP continues to revolutionise wildlife game viewing.
Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube channel, and a web site, Latest Sightings has revolutionised game-viewing. The Latest Sightings application is available for download on iPhone / Android / Windows. Visit your app centre for your free download. • iOS App Store • Android App Store • Windows Phone Store
Some of the ‘helpful features’ include: • Different parks can be added. • A ting (an alert announcing animal sightings), including a location map showing all tings. • Social media – ability to make likeminded friends with a love for wildlife, including likes and comments. • Predictive text for animals & birds. • Ability to share photos of sightings.
Combining the concept of a crowd sourcing app (iOS/ Android/Windows) and social media such as Facebook,
The App is a service to visitors on safari, and it notifies you of sightings in your area, so that you can investigate them for yourself in real time. You never have to drive around again for the whole day seeing nothing -the Latest Sightings App allows users to get their daily dose of nature whether in a game park or not.

Lights! Camera! Let’s go Set Jetting
Set Jetting, or Location Vacations, is the next big thing and certainly one trend that many travellers will be capitalising on in 2016. Movie and TV lovers cannot resist the allure of visiting the sites and sets where their favourite Hollywood Blockbuster or top TV show was made.
G
et ready to channel your inner movie star and take your bow on the red carpet as Trafalgar takes you to Scotland and Ireland to explore the small and big screen sets you can visit in ‘reel’ life.
Winterfell, the backdrop for the series pilot and much of season one. It’s also where you will find the Whispering Wood and key scenes including Robb Stark’s Camp, the Baelor battle and when Brienne confronts the Stark men.
Game of Thrones Winter is coming. Channel your inner Khaleesi or play out the fantasy of defending the Wall against White Walkers. The gripping medieval fantasy of love, lust, power, passion, kings, princes, dragons, bastards, scheming, plotting, swords, violence and the deadly game each character plays in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros has taken the world by storm. The much awaited season six of this incredible TV series will launch in April this year and travellers can visit many of the sets to get an up close and personal experience of this epic show. Visit Londonderry in Northern Ireland and the Dark Hedges where Beech trees either side of a small road have reached up and across to each other, becoming heavily intertwined to create a natural arched tunnel where shadow and light plays through entwined branches. It was here that scenes from the television series ‘Game of Thrones’ were filmed. County Down at Castle Ward’s historic farmyard is the location of

A replica of the Winterfell Castle archery range movie set has been masterfully recreated in the Winterfell Castle courtyard where the filming originally took place. Dress up in character costumes from the show, tour the movie set, stand exactly where ‘Jon Snow’, ‘Robb and Bran Stark’ stood and enjoy the thrill of firing live arrows.
James Bond Fans of Ian Fleming’s secret agent James Bond can visit Eilean Donan Castle in the Scottish Highlands and the Valley of the Weeping at Glencoe to see where scenes from two of 007’s movies were filmed. A visit to the Castle showcases where the 1999 film The World is not Enough featuring Pierce Brosnan was filmed. Scenes depicting the Castle as the Scottish Headquarters of MI6 where Bond and the other agents meet to discuss their plans following the assassination of billionaire Sir Robert King by the terrorist Renard.
I n t e r n ati o n al T rav e l
In the more recent Bond movie, Skyfall¸ M and Bond visit Bond’s boyhood home, Glen Coe, in the Highlands. The Valley of the Weeping in Glencoe is the setting and is also a hugely historic. In 1692 an infamous massacre took place when 38 members of the MacDonald clan were betrayed and killed by the Campbell clan.
Outlander Based on Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling novels details the lives of Claire, Jamie and Black Jack Randall in Scotland during the 18th century. The story is part historical fiction mixed with romance, adventure and a bit of science fiction as Claire travels in time between the 20th and 18th centuries. An unusual combination but it works, and the subsequent TV series of Outlander has been exceptionally well received. Set in the Scottish Highlands the scenery depicted in the show is spectacular. Visit the Cairngorms National Park, Laggan and Culloden to discover more about life in the highlands and see where inspiration was gained for some of the scenes in Outlander. At Culloden view
the battlefield of one of the most brutal battles in 1746 featuring Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Jacobites. Over 1200 men perished in just over one hour. Many other movies such as Chariots of Fire, My Left Foot, Trainspotting, Braveheart, The Commitments, Michael Collins and The Dark Knight Rises have been filmed in Scotland and Ireland and travellers will have the privilege of seeing these sites on Trafalgar’s Celtic Filmscapes guided holiday. Priced from R36 950 per person sharing, spend 11 days in Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland getting to grips with your favourite TV and movie sets. This includes stays in authentic accommodation such as the Laggan Gaskmore Hotel in Scotland and the Raddison Blu St Helens in Dublin, breakfast daily, five dinners (including a Be My Guest farewell dinner in Dublin at the house of author James Joyce), all transportation including ferries and more. Departures that take place over the Edinburgh Tattoo (5 – 27 August) will also get tickets to the Tattoo included.

it presents the leading health concerns of contemporary times, the causes of these conditions and diseases, and ways to prevent or manage them. It is our hope that visitors will recognize the potential of the human body, and will be inspired to live a life in good health and with vitality.” Visitors to the exhibition will be able to explore human anatomy, physiology and health through around 180 authentic whole-body plastinates, individual organs and transparent body slices. A pair of figure skaters performing a skilful lift, a soccer player dribbling a ball and a chess player plotting his next move illustrate the body like never before. 558 Days The heart-wrenching true story of kidnapping victims Yolande and Pierre Korkie On 6th December 2015 it was exactly one year since South African kidnapping victim Pierre Korkie was killed in Yemen during a failed rescue attempt by USA Navy Seals. Tragically it was just 48 hours before Pierre was supposed to be released after long and intense negotiations by Gift of the Givers. The news headlined in all major news networks in South Africa, America, Britain, France, Canada, Australia, India and China. Billions of people all over the world were shocked by the outcome and demanded answers: Who shot Pierre? Why does a family who expected a happy reunion suddenly need to prepare for a funeral? Through all this Yolande Korkie stood strong with her two children before retreating to mourn their loss in private. Now, just over a year after Pierre’s death, Yolande tells their story in a raw and honest memoir, 558 Days. She relives the couple’s kidnapping and brutal severance from their children and life as they knew it. From the moment they were kidnapped by Al Queda in 2013 until Yolande’s release and then through to Pierre’s tragic death, 558 Days recounts the Korkies’ horrific ordeal. Daan Nortier, family spokesperson, says of 558 Days: “It is an intertwining story of faith, unwavering trust and refined love that lead the Korkies through untold hardship, past death and to the purest form of love – forgiveness.”

GIANT STEPS
A true story from Africa about exploitation and the meaning of freedom. Elephants have long been targeted by humans: not only are they killed for their ivory, but their extraordinary strength, intelligence and charisma have seen some of them captured, chained and effectively jailed for life. Bully and Induna are two African elephants, both orphaned in organised culling operations, and taken away from their natural wild lives. Growing up far apart and quite differently, much-loved Bully(a former film star)and the traumatised Induna were both driven to react to their individual situations. Eventually both Bully and Induna were sold on to the same place and their individual situations deteriorated to a point where they were considered to be dangerous. When Induna’s friend Gambo killed one of their handlers, Induna got caught up in the ensuing reaction. Having had their natural lives taken from them, these majestic, intelligent and sensitive animals experienced the worst and best of what humans can offer. At last, having found one another, Bully and Induna were released together onto a game reserve in South Africa’s Western Cape. Richard Peirce presents the elephant’s narratives and the twists and turns of their fortunes and highlights the fate of captive elephants. A Gripping story, intensely moving, full of drama, danger, sadness and ultimate rescue. Part of the proceeds from the sale of Giant Steps will go to TUSK.
