From the Editor... I spent this Easter Holiday at home in Johannesburg, spending time with family and friends and discovering some of our local sites and restaurants. I am still of the opinion that we should not settle for less, and should not allow mediocre to be our norm, we should seek out those places that offer value for money while going the extra mile. I hope you enjoy our feature on Johannesburg, and while not all of the places met the bar, I have only scratched the surface of the many destinations Johannesburg has to offer. Trafalgar tempts you with a European Trip to Italy, and our destination of the month is the very popular Hermanus in the Cape. Get ready for Whale Season, it really is the perfect destination for the June /July school holidays. Don’t miss out on the stunning forthcoming Comedy, Ballet and Cirque that is coming our way in the months ahead, and some of the new books that are gracing the shelves this season encourage walking and mountain biking, take up the challenge to get out there and get fit before winter arrives.

Discovering

Johannesburg

and Surrounds

TravelmagSA Finding Fabulous Editor spent some time this month discovering a few of Johannesburg’s Tourists spots and some local restaurants. GOLD REEF CITY THEME PARK

I love the nervous anticipation that shivers through every queue at Gold Reef City Theme Park. Waiting next in line for the Goldenloop, there is a sense of camaraderie between those that climb off the ride, filled with adrenalin and giggles of relief, as they move on to experience yet another thrill ride, and those that are yet to experience their 30 second rush. Spending a full 24 hours at Gold Reef City recently proved to be an unforgettable week-end that started off with friendly staff welcoming us into the Victorian-themed Gold Reef City Theme Park Hotel. Drinks at Barney’s Restaurant & Bar before being transferred across to casino complex for a relaxing dinner at Calisto’s Portuguese restaurant and a movie at the new cinema complex themed as a Victorian train station with its six theatres, offering a total of 1 048 seats, four of which have 3D capability. The largest theatre is Platform 2, called Grand Central, which has 322 seats, Platform 3, seats 84, boasts luxurious leather seats and a bar and it provides an ideal venue for intimate corporate functions and exclusive VIP events.

Travelmagsa - Finding Fabulous | Issue 22

The next morning we headed with anticipation into the theme park and we enjoyed a perfect family bonding time, my husband and son rode The Tower of Terror together, this has a 50 meter drop at a speed of 100km per hour and a fear factor of 10 out of 10. If my Sons face is anything to go by on the photograph then this is definitely true. After a fun day of Rides, although we did not do all of the over 30 heart-stopping rides we finished our day with a competitive game of 10-pin bowling, and an early supper at Ocean Basket. All in all a ’Fabulous’ week-end away, and a highly recommended Family destination.

UNION BUILDINGS IN PRETORIA

The Union Buildings in Pretoria are set in splendid terraced gardens atop Meintjieskop, and provide for an interesting and educational visit. This iconic landmark has become an emblem of democracy and a popular tourist attraction in the city. The Union buildings form the official seat of the South African Government and also house the offices of the President.

S A T rav e l WALTER SISULA NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDENS

Managed by SANBI – Biodiversity for Life; South Africa’s National Biodiversity Institute, and founded in 1982, the Walter Sisula National Botanical Gardens have been a popular venue since the late 1800’s. Voted the best place to get back to nature in Gauteng for nine years in a row, and with its dense bush in Kloof’s and along streams, and with its 600 naturally occurring species this is definitely true. 220 Bird Species, including a breeding pair of Vereaux’s Eagles nest on the Cliffs of the Witpoortjie Waterfall, and while I have not as yet been fortunate to see them, there are small antelope and jackals that occur naturally in the gardens. The Garden offers a peaceful respite from the city; take a blanket and a book, stroll the gardens and visit the waterfall, picnic on the lawn or enjoy a bite at the Eagles Fare Restaurant.

S A T rav e l VAN GAALEN KAASMAKERIJ

I love visiting this authentic Dutch Cheese farm, in the heart of Magaliesberg, and so will you if you enjoy a Cheese Platter and Bottle of wine, in a peaceful country setting, with the mountains as the backdrop in the distance - add a plate of cold meats and extra bread and crackers, and there really is enough for the whole family to share. Cheese and other delicacies can be bought in the shop, and tours can be arranged, for all ages in either Dutch, English, Afrikaans or German. Cheese making courses can also be arranged by appointment.

Van Gaalen Cheese Factory

O PERI PERI A very popular casual dining restaurant with the locals in Edenvale proved to be an enjoyable place to spend a relaxed informal dinner with my family, but left me wandering what is the right thing to order on the menu. I read a couple of other reviews and it seems the Flame Grilled Chicken and Chips is good. We ordered a Trinchado, Rump Steak with Chicken Livers, and a Pizza. The Rump was as tender as the Trinchado was tough, and the green pepper, garlic and cream sauce, lacked any of the promised ingredients. However it is an affordable, local choice.

S A T rav e l ERAWAN Erawan Thai Restaurant and Bar has been in Bedfordview for a year now, and while it was my first visit, it will most definitely not be my last. The restaurant is impeccable with friendly, attentive service. We ordered Sushi, Pad Thai - thin Thai noodles with stir fried vegetables , peanuts, garlic and lime juice, and the Crispy Duck and Pancakes – half a deboned Duck thinly sliced and served with cucumber, spring onion, and Housin Sauce. The meal was complimented with a local wine and rounded off with a sticky rice pudding – a Thai Rice Pudding with Coconut Cream and Lychees and a Chocolate Mousse, to which I was more inclined, with its layers of light pastry, chocolate sauce and chopped nuts. I am looking forward to returning to try the Crispy Pork, or Green Thai Curry in the near future. While it is a little on the pricey side, it is the perfect destination to try something a little different.

MO-ZAM-BIK I am always looking for restaurants where I can sit outside and Mo-Zam-Bik in Linksfield provides the perfect child friendly garden setting. My daughter was literally entertained the whole evening, and we spent an enjoyable time with friends.

I ordered the Calamari Espetada, and while the

calamari was delicious, I would suggest ordering the lemon butter on the side, as the food was swimming in it, making the meal too rich. The kids Prawns also arrived with too much butter, and the Hot Peri Peri Chicken was probably not a sensible choice, the Chicken in Coconut and Lime was apparently delicious, as was the Rump Steak, and the Menu does provide something for everyone.

CHURCH SQUARE

(Dutch: Marktplein) in Pretoria was more of a disappointment as the statue of Paul Kruger and his four soldiers where fenced off for fear of being defaced. The square is surrounded by some interesting historical buildings, and remains a popular destination for tourist busses to visit.

Destination of the Month

Hermanus By Penelope Jolliffe

Travelmagsa - Finding Fabulous | Issue 22

Hermanus, a picturesque fishing village, set between the Atlantic Ocean and the Olifantsberg Mountains, in the Overberg, is famous for Southern Right Whales.

S A T rav e l

H

ermanus, with its warm Mediterranean climate, has one of the highest plant diversities in the world being in the Cape floristic Region, which is one of the smallest of the six recognised Floral Kingdoms in the world. Hermanus attracts visitors from all over the globe, throughout the year, and it is known to be the best land based whale watching spot in the world. I have had the pleasure of viewing these majestic creatures many times from Hermanus. http://www.hermanus.co.za/whales

Hermanus is a modern but quaint seaside town offering visitors an unforgettable holiday. Activities range from whale watching from the shore or a boat, paragliding, fishing, plane trips, shark cage diving, hiking in the local Fernkloof Nature Reserve, swimming, or visiting one of the wineries for wine tasting and/or lunch, browsing through the markets with their diverse crafts or enjoying sundowners in one of the restaurants overlooking the Old Harbour.

Hermanus is home to the world’s only Whale Crier, and the sounds of his kelp horn can be heard when the first whales are sighted. This has been a tradition since 1991. http://www.hermanus.co.za/whale-crier In the spring, at end of September, the much anticipated Whale Festival takes place, and Hermanus becomes a hive of activity. Visitors flock to the area to enjoy the festivities: music; wine; food; markets; and the local people to experience the uniqueness of sighting so many whales in one place. I am always transformed by the magnitude of being able to experience the majesty of the Southern Right Whales, and encourage you to visit them, they may even put on a show. I would suggest that you book your holiday soon as the Whales can be seen with their calves from May to November.

Italy, a land of surprises

Rome

Weather

A selection of wonderful Italian holidays:

You only have to turn a corner and you’ll see something extraordinary, whether it’s a crumbling Roman ruin in the nation’s capital, or a group of laughing nuns. Best of all, travel with Trafalgar and you won’t just see the sights, you’ll be welcomed into the home of Italian families for home-cooking and lively conversation. You’ll also travel to the boot of Europe in 2016 at 2015 prices. Italy’s climate has many regional variations. However, it’s generally warm in summer and humid in the central region. Summer occurs from May through to September, and is the ideal time to visit Italy, but you can visit the home of all things delicious just about any time of the year. The majority of Trafalgar’s guided holidays to Italy take place between April and October, whilst those that focus on the great Italian cities take travellers right throughout the year.

Geography

Italy is a long, boot-shaped Italian Peninsula and some islands including Sicily and Sardinia. It has over 8,000km of coastline and over 40% of the country is mountainous. Sicily is located in the central Mediterranean. Its most prominent landmark is Mount Etna, which is at 3,320 m the tallest active volcano in Europe and one of the most active in the world. The island has a typical Mediterranean climate. Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea (after Sicily and before Cyprus) and an autonomous region of Italy. The coasts of Sardinia (1,849 km long) are generally high and rocky, with long, relatively straight stretches of coastline, many outstanding headlands, a few wide, deep bays, and many inlets with various smaller islands off the coast. The island has a Mediterranean climate along the coasts, plains and low hills and a continental climate on the interior plateaus, valleys and mountain ranges.

Italy’s capital is a strange hybrid of a modern 21st century metropolis and ancient Rome. The most seasoned traveller can’t fail to be impressed by the Colosseum, or get a sense of how terrified combatants must have been two thousand years ago. And even though the Trevi Fountain is invariably teeming with visitors from all over the globe, it is gorgeous.

The Great Italian Cities takes in Rome, Florence and Venice with visits to Pisa, Assisi and Bologna in between. Priced from R26 850 per person twin share (save 5% off if you book before 13 May 2016) this guided holiday includes 9 nights’ accommodation with hot buffet breakfast daily, four dinners (including a Be My Guest dinner in Florence), the Trafalgar Insider Experience which includes Local Specialists in Rome, Assisi, Florence, Bologna and Venice, a wonderful Cultural Insight in the Vatican and at Giudecca Island and the magnificent Be My Guest lunch in the Tuscan hills. The ten-day Flavours of Italy offers travellers the perfect taste of Italy. This foodie trip will have guests sipping Chianti in Tuscany, eating Proscuitto in Parma, Bolgnese in Bologna and world famous gelati in San Gimignano. Enjoy a day exploring the Tuscan lifestyle with a cooking lesson and visit to the fresh produce market in Florence. Priced from R33 900 per person twin share this includes nine nights’ accommodation with hot buffet breakfast daily, one lunch, five dinners (including a Be My Guest), a stay in Authentic Accommodation in San Gimignano and more. Book and pay by 13 May and take 5% off the price. Explore the fashion capital of Italy and then head to the sun-drenched coastal villages of Cinque Terre. Trafalgar’s Northern Italy including Cinque Terre is priced from R22 950 per person twin share and includes 8 nights’ accommodations with a hot buffet breakfast daily, 5 dinners (including a Be My Guest dinner) and visits to the Italian Lakes, Milan, Parma, Santa Margherita, Genoa, Baveno and Varese. Book and pay by 13 May to take 5% off this price.

ROYAL MOSCOW BALLET TOURS SOUTH AFRICA

D

rama, romance and passion will unite when the Royal Moscow Ballet comes to Durban on April 16 with a programme of three classical ballet masterpieces. The company, which consists of principal dancers from leading Russian choreography schools, will perform the dreamy Chopiniana (Les Sylphides), the fiery Carmen and the dazzling Paquita Grand Pas. The tour starts in Johannesburg on April 2 and then moves to East London, Port Elizabeth, Pretoria, Potchefstroom, Bloemfontein and finally Durban, where the company will perform two shows at 3pm and 7.30pm at the Playhouse Opera. Founded by principal dancer and choreographer Anatoly Emelianov and creative director Anna Alexidze in 2002, the Royal Moscow Ballet has given more than 1000 performances in countries around the globe, including Spain, Portugal, Greece, France, Austria, Sweden, the USA, Great Britain, Germany, India, China and Mexico. The programme opens with Chopiniana, which had its first performance in St Petersburg, Russia, in 1907 with music by Frederic Chopin and choreography by Mikhail Fokine, who said the ballet was his “favourite child” representing his dream of romantic ballet “with all its mood, poetry and sadness”. Renamed Les Sylphides in 1909, it featured the great Anna Pavlova and introduced Russian ballet to the Western world. It is still among the repertoires of major ballet companies throughout the world. Carmen was first set as a one-act ballet by the famed Russian choreographer Marius Pepita in 1845, some 30 years before George Bizet’s celebrated opera was first heard. Several versions followed, including that by choreographer Alberto Alonso working with renowned Russian ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, whose husband Rodion Shehedrin created the Carmen Suite, based on Bizet’s music scored only for strings and percussion instruments. The programme culminates with the Paquita Grand Pas, first presented by the Paris Opera Ballet in 1846. After several revivals, it is still a major cornerstone of traditional classical ballet repertory. The title role of the Spanish gypsy girl who saves the life of a French officer has been performed by the world’s leading ballerinas, including Pavlova, who included it in her company’s repertory. The ballet was also staged in the 1970s by Rudolf Nureyev for La Scala, the Vienna State Opera Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre. The Royal Moscow Ballet is presented in South Africa by Edouard Miasnikov Agency, whose objective is to widen cultural exchange and sharing between Russia and South Africa.

Tickets, priced at R200, R250 and R300, are available at Computicket.

Bohemian Rhapsody

Queen`s Bohemian Rhapsody remains one of the greatest selling hits of all time, and yet, Queen were famously secretive about the song`s obscure significance. Its enigmatic story and hidden meaning have remained shrouded in mystery for over 40 years ... until now. Award-winning actor and writer, Robert Fridjhon, returns to the stage in his new one-man show that will shatter the `Bo Rap` myth forever. This is not a musical. This isn`t Freddie Mercury`s biography. This is gritty London, 1970. It`s Berkoff meets Guy Ritchie in a twisted thriller that will have you wondering who pulled the trigger, right until the very end. Robert is best known for his starring roles in many Pieter Toerien Productions including TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT, BOEING BOEING, A PERFECT WEDDING, THE MOUSETRAP, DON`T DRESS FOR DINNER, A LOAD OF BULL, WILD, PYTHONESQUE and JEEVES & WOOSTER IN PERFECT NONSENSE, for which he has just won a Mercury Theatre Award for his performance as Seppings. As a solo performer, Robert is emerging as a formidable force to be reckoned with. Directed by the highly acclaimed Alan Swerdlow, Bohemian Rhapsody is one show you definitely do not want to miss!

Please note that BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY contains strong language and elements of violent imagery. It is, therefore, not suitable for sensitive patrons, or anyone under the age of 16

Word spread quickly and “iD” became the hottest ticket in town. Owing to critical acclaim and rave reviews, “ “iD” sold out fast, thereby creating an unprecedented demand for its return. Cirque Éloize iD is back! This popular show makes its Cape Town debut at Artscape on Wednesday, 16 November 2016 for a limited season of just 15 performances, ending on Sunday, 27 November 2016. Thereafter, Cirque Éloize iD returns to Montecasino’s Teatro on Wednesday, 30 November 2016, running until 24 December 2016. There are special midweek show times and matinees scheduled during peak holiday season. Tickets are on sale at Computicket. Directed by Jeannot Painchaud and brought to South Africa by leading local promoter, Showtime Management, Cirque Éloize’s iD has been enjoyed over the past seven years by more than 1 million spectators in nearly 950 performances in almost 100 cities across the globe in 23 countries. A highenergy blend of circus arts and urban dance, iD is a production for the young at heart featuring an inspiring soundtrack and innovative video projections. Acrobats, aerialists, a trial biker, and hip hop and break dancers come together to create a microcosmic society where two groups celebrate everyone’s distinct identity. There’s speed, power and a cacophony of sounds as everything comes together in the unprecedented spectacular trampoline-finale. The show’s energy and poetry will surpass the expectations of audiences and is guaranteed to leave them in awe. In 2014 City Buzz enthusiastically remarked, “From the first siren wail to its astonishing trampoline finale, Cirque Éloize iD shocked, amused and enthralled as it brought the wonders of the circus to a contemporary audience.” The Tonight praised the performers; “They’re using their heads to appeal to their peers and in the same space, attracting audiences for the sheer spectacle of their striking showmanship.”

Video here “The runaway success of the show’s first season in 2014 says it all – this is a unique and massively exciting show for the whole family,” says Hazel Feldman of Showtime Management who added, “This mind-blowing fusion of new theatrical circus and urban dance is an absolute must “do” on every year-end calendar!” iD features a cast of 15 acrobats and performers, and incorporates innovative multimedia elements, as well as a rock and electronica inspired soundtrack created by composers Jean-Phi Goncalves and Alex McMahon. In Cirque Éloize’s iD, acrobatic disciplines are combined with the energy of hiphop and street dances, giving a fresh and high octane spin to modern circus. The show’s Director, Jeannot Painchaud says, “It is with great pleasure that we bring this urban tale, filled with color, passion and energy to Cape Town for the very first time. We are also pleased to be back in Johannesburg where we played to packed houses in 2014.” ID is now Cirque Éloize’s biggest international success. Seven years after its first presentation, it still moves people, and differentiates itself from others with its energy and edginess..” Directed by Jeannot Painchaud, Cirque Éloize iD began touring in 2009. The set design, illustrations and video projections are created by Robert Massicotte in collaboration with Alexis Laurence. The music is composed by Jean-Phi Goncalves and Alex McMahon, while the lighting is by Nicolas Descoteaux. Krzysztof Soroczynski acted as show acrobatic designer and head-trainer. iD also includes an artistic contribution from Mourad Merzouki. It’s like no other show ever seen before in South Africa. “Everything Comes Alive” by We

Are Messengers

Everybody has a story to tell. We’re all walking narratives. As believers, we have an even bigger story to share—of the time and place where God stepped in and changed our lives forever, and the endless ways He continues to work in our lives daily. His story is our story. We are carriers of His truth. We are His ambassadors, and We Are Messengers is putting music and lyrics to this mission. “We see ourselves as messengers carrying the good news,” says frontman Darren Mulligan, who’s part of the band’s line-up that also includes his wife Heidi, guitarists Dylan Craig and Steven Stringer and bassist Matthew Montgomery. “We’re just carrying [His message] from our hearts up into our mouths and out into our hands,” Mulligan says. “God’s given us something to say. We know what we need to communicate, and we can do it in two ways. We can do it through words and through songs, and then we can do it through our lives. We just try and think every day, ‘What is God saying to me? What opportunity is God bringing?’” “We try and write simple songs in a very complicated world,” shares Mulligan. “Every day, I want to write something that’s new to me. At the very core of what we do, we want to be honest. I want to be sincere. I want to be vulnerable… That’s my only way of worshiping, because I think people just want to be told the truth.” “Everything Comes Alive” was inspired by my favourite verse in the bible. In Ephesians 2, Paul reminds us that at one time I was dead in my sins. Later, he says “But God, being rich in mercy and because of His great love, has made me alive in Christ.” And not just alive in Christ, but seated in heavenly places. Our hope is that this song will remind you of the great privilege it is to serve God, and it will stir up in us a great sense of joy. We’re no longer slaves of sin, but we’re children of the King.”
