Fern of the Vine – Food, Wine, Travel The Sommelier’s Selection is my kind of wine awards. Launched in 2015 and aimed at the young, hip everyday wine drinker (like myself), it’s a fun innovative concept, but still serious enough about selecting top class wines, blindtasted by experienced sommeliers and judged according to a high standard. I may not be that young, and I have a middle-aged husband, but I still consider myself “with-it,” so I gleefully made my way to Gallery MOMO to sample some of the winners and with any luck, learn to appreciate modern art. It was the perfect way to spend a sultry summer evening, tasting outstanding wine in the small lush garden behind the art gallery, whilst the sun set lazily overhead. Moving from one tasting table to another was a lengthy process, as I could not help chatting to the very approachable representatives pouring the vino, some of them the winemakers themselves, which led to some deep, riveting wine discussions. The more wine I had, the deeper these discussions became.
My recent escapade… Time: Seventeen thirty Venue: Gallery MOMO – Parktown North, Johannesburg Mission: Taste as many wines selected for this year’s Sommeliers Selection ultimate wine list as possible (without falling over) and learn something about art.

I was truly impressed with the award winners. Everything from big name wine estates, right down to some tiny boutique wineries (of which I had never heard) were represented. Many of the wines are fun, uncomplicated and easy drinking, but definitely not short on quality or flavour. There were also some interesting and unusual single varietals and blends represented as well as some “big boys” – bold, elegant wines you would age in your cellar or purchase for a special occasion. There were also bubblies, dessert wines and even a few good craft beers to sample. Entries were judged for their food paring suitability, as well as their gastronomical relevance, so you can be assured that if you see a wine bearing the winners Sommelier’s Selection gold sticker and neck tag, in your local restaurant or retailer, it’s going to be worth drinking. Winning wines are categorised into groups like “economically savvy whites/reds” to “elegant and classy whites/reds” and
Fern of the Vine – Food, Wine, Travel This cocktail is a frozen rosé, or as I like to call it, frozé. A pinotage or merlot rosé works well in this cocktail, but don’t worry about being too fussy, as any dry rosé will do.
You will need: 1 bottle dry rosé of your choice 2 cups fresh strawberries, stems removed and halved 1 tablespoon castor sugar (or your favourite sugar substitute) ¼ cup vodka 2 tablespoon grenadine syrup A blender “voluptuous and rich reds” – so I guarantee there is wine to suit every taste, occasion and budget. To view all the category winners look out for the Sommelier’s Selection wine list, which will be distributed countrywide to trade and restaurants, visit the website www.sommeliersselection. co.za or follow them on Instagram @SommSelection and Twitter @SommelierS. I must confess. I am an art Philistine. So much so that I consider my five year old daughter’s drawings to be on par with any of Picasso’s great works. However, I must say that after a few good glasses of wine, the art pieces in the gallery started making a lot more sense to me. I think I may have stumbled across both the artist’s muse, and the art critic’s secret. Mission accomplished. We all dream of balmy summer days, as we are in the midst of the Summer Season, I have decided to share with you the perfect wine Summer cocktail. Rosé is a delightful light summery wine, which, contrary to popular belief, is not just for women. I am not talking about those awful cherry red, syrupy sweet abominations that are “value-packaged” in boxes or 1.5l bottles. Proper rosé should be delicate, bone dry and salmon pink - brimming with enticing aromas of ripe strawberries and rose petals, and oozing flavours like freshly picked raspberries, candy floss and Turkish Delight.
1. You will need to start preparing your froze the night before you plan on drinking it. Divide the whole bottle of rosé between ice cube trays and freeze overnight. The alcohol will stop the wine from freezing completely so you will end up with slushy ice cubes. 2. Once your wine is frozen, place the strawberries into your blender and sprinkle with the sugar. Leave to sit for a few minutes. 3. Pour in the vodka and grenadine syrup and finally, throw in the frozen rosé cubes. 4. Blend until well combined and slushy. Best served in a martini glass, preferably sitting on the beach or lounging next to the pool. I like to pour this into a glass jug and keep it well chilled in the freezer between glass top ups. Make sure you have another few bottles of rosé stashed in the cupboard, because this is so delicious, you’ll want to be drinking it every day during your summer holidays. Remember, life is too short to drink bad wine.
Cheers, Fern

THE SILO is a Magical Space Towering above the V&A Waterfront surrounded by the Natural Wonder of SOUTH AFRICA’S MOTHER CITY.
T
he Silo Hotel, part of The Royal Portfolio, will be opening in March 2017, in the grain elevator portion of the historic grain silo complex, occupying six floors above what will become the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA). The Silo will be an extraordinary hotel that sets a new standard for luxury travel, located in the heart of the V&A Waterfront, promising unrivalled views of Cape Town. The grain silo complex was the tallest building in SubSaharan Africa at 57m, when it was opened in August 1924 after 3 years of construction. It closed in August 2001 after nearly 80 years at the heart of South Africa’s industrial and agricultural development. The grain silo played an integral role in terms of international trade as an export facility, but it also provided vital infrastructure to South Africa’s regional agricultural economies supporting local farming communities, while also making a major contribution to the economic activities of Table Bay harbour. The building has two parts – the elevator tower, where The Silo Hotel is located, which facilitated the mechanical bulk handling of grain, and the actual storage silos themselves. The elevator tower was known as the working house and it served numerous functions. It received grain from the
10
Travelmagsa - Finding Fabulous | Issue 30
track shed, lifted it to the top of the building by the use of elevators and provided facilities for the grain to be weighed, cleaned, bagged, stored and distributed. Grain from the smaller, inland ‘country elevators’ around South Africa was delivered to Cape Town. The first load of maize was received into the grain elevator in Cape Town on the 8 September 1924, and this was followed two months later by the first export from the new elevator – 6,245 tons of maize aboard the SS Willaston destined for Europe, on the 12th November 1924. The last export shipment from the grain elevator was on board the M/V Anangel Wisdom in 1995 and operations ceased in 2001. There are seven room categories at The Silo, based on room size and the views. The rooms are more spacious vertically than horizontally due to the unique architecture of the Silo, and in particular the ingenious design of the pillowed window bays which are one of the key architectural features. The 187m2 one-bedroom penthouse is the jewel in The Royal Portfolio’s crown, located on the top floor of The Silo facing Table Mountain with triple aspect views of Cape Town and a 24m2 balcony. There are two triple aspect Royal Suites, facing the Atlantic Ocean, Robben Island and the distant mountains. Each Royal Suite is 132m2 and each has 2 bedrooms and a generous balcony. There are
L ocal T rav e l four Family Suites on the seventh floor with views over the old harbour and out to the distant mountains or over the V&A Waterfront and Signal Hill. Family Suites range from 111m2 to 128m2 including a balcony and each has a mezzanine level with two bedrooms. The Silo also offers seven Deluxe Superior Suites across the 8th, 9th and 10th floors with spectacular 5.5m high pillowed glass windows showcasing the natural wonder of Cape Town. They range in size from 60m2 to 67m2 including a balcony. There are also six Superior Suites across the 6th and 7th floors with either mountain or harbour views. These suites vary between 76m2 and 88m2 including a small balcony and each has the bedroom on a mezzanine level. The four Luxury Rooms with mountain views on the 8th and 9th floors, are 47m2 including a balcony and the four 41m2 Silo Rooms enjoy spectacular harbour views including a balcony.
The magic of Cape Town lies in the collision of natural wonder, diverse cultures, art, design and a thriving food and wine scene. The Silo Hotel is located in Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront and is the ideal base from which to explore all that the city has to offer. At the hotel itself, guests can relax at the spa, take afternoon tea overlooking Table Mountain, quaff champagne, swim in the rooftop pool, work off the city’s fine dining in the gym or enjoy a private tour of the museum.
Top Attractions in Cape Town: Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Lion’s Head, Helicopter Tour, Penguins at Boulders Beach, Chapman’s Peak Drive, Robben Island, The V&A Waterfront, Cape Point, Wine Tastings.
The Silo Hotel facilities include: The Granary Café, The Willaston Bar, The Sky Terrace, Rooftop Restaurant & Swimming pool. The Silo Spa (Five Treatment Rooms, Sauna, Change Rooms), Gym, Airport Transfers, 24 Hour Guest Services, Laundry Service, Complimentary WiFi, Concierge Services, Private Meeting Rooms / Private Dining Rooms - The Wisdom Room Seats 22, Rooms 607 & 608 Seat 6 each, Underground Parking and a private Art Gallery. Zeitz MOCAA will be a contemporary art museum to rival the likes of the Tate Modern in London, MoMA in New York and Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid. Zeitz MOCAA is a not-for-profit partnership between the V&A Waterfront and Jochen Zeitz, whose collection forms the museum’s founding collection. Zeitz MOCAA will open in late September 2017. The building has been designed by Thomas Heatherwick, Founder and Principal of the London-based Heatherwick Studio. Heatherwick Studio was tasked with the transformation of the elevator house and the adjacent storage annex of 6 rows of 7 silos, while carefully retaining its cultural significance and creating a building that will be as synonymous with the Cape Town skyline as the Eiffel Tower is to Paris. From the outside, the greatest visible change to the building’s original structure will be the addition of pillowed glazing panels, inserted into the geometry of the hotel floors, which will bulge outward as if gently inflated. By night, this will transform the building into a glowing lantern or beacon in the harbour. Cape Town is consistently ranked among the Top 10 cities in the world to visit, and The ‘Mother City’, as it is affectionately known, is a colourful and vibrant city surrounded by dramatic mountains and sandy beaches.

Bringing the flavours of South India and the Mediterranean to the Cape Coast By Penelope Jolliffe
Sundoo says, “When I go overseas, I always eat where the locals eat: you get good value for money, good food, consistency and excellent service - you feel at home. That’s what I want to do here: create a destination spot that’s also a home for locals.”
T
he City of Cape Town is home to the acclaimed, restauranteur and doyen chef Seelan Sundoo and his successful restaurants; the popular Mediterranean restaurant Seelan Restaurant & Bar at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, and Sundoo Indian Tapas & Bar in Sea Point. The culinary cognoscente Seelan Sundoo, has created two restaurants, both inspired by his heritage and his journey through life. They epitomize his passion for designing a dining experience, that though influenced by his South Indian roots, takes the diner on a journey to the Mediterranean or India itself, depending on which restaurant you have chosen to visit. Seelan Restaurant & Bar at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront offers diners the ambience of the joie de vivre (joy of life) of the South of France, with spectacular views of Table Mountain and the V&A harbour. Seelan Sundoo, the culinary master, has a menu that is first-class and diners relish the bona fida European cuisine with superb seafood, grills and pasta, not to mention Seelan’s signature dishes, including his lamb curry which has won plaudits around the world. Meals can be complimented by the excellent wine choices, and Seelan’s locally made house wine. Influenced by his own love of traveling and dining where the locals dine, Seelan Sundoo desired to have restaurants that are a place to come to where people feel at home. Bearing this in mind, these restaurants allow patrons to experience the best cuisine and wines in a leisurely, vibrant atmosphere.

Travelmagsa - Finding Fabulous | Issue 30
Sundoo Indian Tapas & Bar is a New York fashioned restaurant set in the heart and bustle of Sea Point, and it proffers diners a true treat as one savours the various flavours of South India. Dishes also have a Durban-Indian influence, which awaken the senses with their intoxicating aromas and delectable tastes. Sundoo has refined his recipes, and his tapas specialties are to be shared and enjoyed. Sundoo Indian Tapas & Bar is intimate, inviting and fun. Seelan Sundoo strives to find produce that is fresh, of excellent quality and healthy from locals around the country, and countries around the world - nowhere is too far! Everything is homemade, from the spices to the pickles, and the dishes are produced, combined and cooked on the day of serving. Both restaurants strive to offer excellent service, and promise a fabulous dining experience! The venue is also available for functions and events.

5 Unique things you can only see and do on a trip to Istanbul Did you know that you can swim between Europe and Asia, in a pool that’s on the sea? But only in Istanbul!
T
Istanbul – Pierre Loti Cafe
hey say that every city has its own character, and that every trip designs its own memory. Istanbul has served as the centre of three major religions through its history, and at the heart of its culture is its geographic position - it is the gateway between Europe and Asia. This makes Istanbul a particularly unique mix of food, sights, and social and cultural norms. Here are five things you can experience only on a trip to Istanbul.
18
Travelmagsa - Finding Fabulous | Issue 30
Continental Drift It makes sense that the ability to move between the continents of Asia and Europe is a unique draw. The island of Sauda is situated on the Bosphorous, offering 360-degree views of Istanbul. The Olympic-sized swimming pool on Sauda literally allows you to swim upon the Bosphorous, in between two continents. Just as well, swimming in the waterway itself is quite dangerous.
I nt e rnational T rav e l Towering History
Have a Row
The Galata Tower in Istanbul claims a long and varied history. It has served as a lighthouse, a defense tower, a prisoner-of-war asylum for Christian captives, and an observatory. But probably its most notable annotation is that it is the site for the first (recorded) unpowered human flight. At least, it is the site from which Hezârfen Ahmed Çelebi allegedly launched himself into history with his artificial wings in the mid-1600s. Today you can climb this tower as a visitor, as long as you don’t attempt to fly six kilometres like Çelebi did.
The Golden Horn or Haliç is a major urban waterway in Istanbul. One of its key tourism attractions is rowing, as it allows tourists to take unique view of the city, especially early in the morning. From old city walls, Ottoman mosques, 19th century churches and the sound of the call to prayer - ezan, a morning row along this route is gloriously soul-enhancing. All equipment is usually supplied, and everyone from beginner to expert is welcome.
Street Life Every city has a legendary, busy street. In Istanbul, Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue) is one that every tourist needs to experience. The two kilometre stretch houses shops, churches, restaurants, mosques and hotels, and people. Over two million of them visit this street every day, and it is a true reflection of the bustle and business of Ístanbul. There’s even an antique tram lending its charm to the din. Try a simit - a sort of sesame bagel, if you like from a local trolley food vendor if you can find one, or find a seat and enjoy it with a soup.
Cleanse yourself Perhaps the most uniquely Turkish experience of all is to visit one of Istanbul’s many Turkish Baths (hamam). No visit to the city is complete without trying the traditional (or modern variant) of this sauna, steam, and cool bathing experience ending with a relaxing massage. There are cheaper hamami in Istanbul that are frequented by locals, or upmarket luxury options where you will also find more modern spa services. Typical setting of Turkish Bath or Hammam in Cairo

A Guide to
Italy’s Wine Regions
with Costsaver in 2017
I
taly’s wine regions are dotted throughout the country; each one differing in landscape and climate, giving the wine produced there its unique characteristics. Whether you’re sampling the region’s wine in a local restaurant, or at the source on an Italian vineyard, these are the varieties to look out for in some of Italy’s most prestigious wine regions on a trip during your free time with CostSaver.
Visit the winery with Trafalgar on the Secrets of Italy trip where you’ll have the chance to pair the wine with the rich meat dishes of northern Italian cuisine. For an alternative, try the Moscato d’Asti at Nico Lavini winery within the Asti wine region. This sweet sparkling wine is made from Moscato bianco grapes, reminiscent of nectarines and blossom and produced across northwest Italy.
CostSaver offers value, ease and fun, and with six incredible regional experiences to choose from - in Italy travellers are sure to get their fill, down to the last drop.
Lombardy
Piedmont Here amidst the mountains of northern Italy, it’s the Nebbiolo grape – a variety that’s rarely seen outside of Piedmont – that winemakers take the most pride in, producing red wines that are high in both tannin and acidity. At Barale Fratelli this wine has been produced for over 150 years by generations of the Barale family, who endeavour to reflect the authenticity of Nebbiolo grapes, and ultimately the wine’s origin, Piedmont.

With Milan at its heart and the Italian Lakes within its borders, the Lombardy region is undeniably alluring to travellers. Its wine is yet another draw; Valtellina wine region lies within Lombardy – close to the Swiss border – with vineyard covered slopes where wines are primarily made from Chiavennasca grapes (the Valtellina name for Nebbiolo). Around Oltrepo Pavese, meanwhile, it’s the Pinot Noir grape, which in Lombardy is referred to as Pinot Nero, which stands out the most. Another particularly distinctive wine from this region is the rich, dry, Sforzato wine, made from at least 90 per cent Nebbiolo grapes, which are partially dried before being pressed.
I nt e rnational T rav e l Veneto Within Veneto, it’s the Valpolicella region that’s found the most enduring fame in viticulture, and where Amarone della Valpolicella – officially classified one of Italy’s top-tier wines – is made. Much like Sforzato, the grapes are dried before the winemaking process begins to concentrate the sugars in the grapes, resulting in a dry, full-bodied red that goes especially well with meats and cheese. Merlot is another good option for red wine drinkers in Veneto, while those who prefer white wine would do well with a local Soave, made from Garganega grapes.
Tuscany In Tuscany, the Chianti wine region garners the most international attention, with the dominant grape, Sangiovese used to produce red wine, and Trebbiano and Vermentino grapes for white wine. In Montecatini, visitors can try the local varieties at Borgo della Limonaia farmhouse, where both red and white organic wine can be sampled alongside rustic Tuscan fare. On the Italy Bellissimo trip, CostSaver guests can join a wine tasting experience with the Callistri family, and on the Flavours of Italy trip, guests have the opportunity to visit Fattoria di Petroio within the Chianti hills; here, try a deep red wine made from Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, alongside the winery’s golden Chianti dessert wine.
Sicily Amidst the vineyards that lie at the foot of Mount Etna, Azienda Agricola Liperus produces a variety of wines using the indigenous grapes. Here, visitors can walk through the vineyards and step into the wine cellars in the company of Maria Loredana Marano, who runs the estate, to see how
the wine is made, before having a wine tasting with the inhouse sommelier. Travel through Italy‘s wine regions with Costsaver, operated by Trafalgar and discover the indigenous grape varieties. Airbnb expands beyond the home with the launch of Trips
A
irbnb unveiled the most significant development in its eight year history as it moves beyond accommodation with the launch of Trips. Bringing together where you stay, what you do and the people you meet all in one place, Trips is a people-powered platform designed to make travel both easy and magical. Trips has launched with three key areas - Experiences, Places and Homes, with Flights and Services to be added in the future. Trips will make travel magical again, by immersing travellers in communities around the world. Get unprecedented access to local passions and interests, like violin making in Paris or marathon running in Kenya; discover the hidden gems that only locals know about via personal recommendations; and socialise with other travellers and locals at exciting events. Add that to three million bookable homes, and Airbnb becomes the one place to go for a truly different kind of travel experience. Having already transformed where people stay when they travel through people-powered hospitality, Airbnb is taking this
same people-focused approach to the rest of the trip and in doing so, providing a way for people to make money from their passions and interests. “Until now, Airbnb has been about homes,” said Brian Chesky, Airbnb CEO. According to Chesky, the launch of Trips will bring together where you stay, what you do, and the people you meet all in one place. “We want to make travel magical again by putting people back at the heart of every trip.” Experiences are handcrafted activities designed and led by local experts - be it a single activity like a Samurai Swordplay workshop or an immersive

multi-day experience like learning about and driving classic cars in Malibu. Experiences offer unprecedented access and deep insights into communities and places that you wouldn’t otherwise come across, such as Truffle Hunting in Tuscany or the grime music scene in London. Trips launches with around 500 Experiences in 12 cities worldwide, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Detroit, Havana, London, Paris, Florence, Nairobi, Cape Town, Tokyo and Seoul. Budding hosts in those and a further 39 cities worldwide can request to list their Experience. A number of Experiences will also be available where guests can give something back to communities through non-profit organisations. In Detroit for example, Khali Sweeney provides an opportunity to go behind-thescenes at his Downtown Boxing Gym that provides local children with an after-school program of healthy snacks, homework time, and boxing lessons.
Places - Guidebooks, Meet ups and Audio Walks Trips brings places to life through the people that live there, reflecting the recommendations of hundreds of thousands of Airbnb hosts, neighbourhood insiders and local influencers and is an alternative to aggregated tourist lists that funnel people to the same places. With Insider Guidebooks, Airbnb has identified cultural experts and neighbourhood insiders to recommend the hidden gems within their city. Find the perfect run from a marathoner, the best dive bar from a local mixologist and

the next great undiscovered restaurant from an up-andcoming chef. 100 Insider Guidebooks will be available in six cities - Los Angeles, San Francisco, Havana, Nairobi, Detroit and Seoul - with more coming soon. As well as Insider Guidebooks, Places includes over one million individual recommendations worldwide from Airbnb’s home hosts, recommending their favourite hidden gems in their neighbourhoods, from cafes and restaurants to parks and other local attractions. A partnership with restaurant booking platform, Resy, will make it possible for people in future to book tables at great local restaurants directly through the Airbnb app. Airbnb has also struck an exclusive partnership with Detour to offer access to amazing experiential audio walking tours allowing people to discover neighbourhoods in a totally unique and authentic way. Audio tours will initially be available for Los Angeles with San Francisco, Paris, London, Tokyo and Seoul to follow by Spring 2017. With Trips, Airbnb also wants to make travel more social, helping connect the thousands of Airbnb users in a city on any given night. Meet ups within Places will let local businesses host one-off or regular events for Airbnb guests and locals to connect with each other.
Homes With three million homes available to book across 191 countries, Airbnb offers the largest and most diverse range of unique accommodation options for travellers which will now be available to book alongside Experiences in available cities.
I n d u str y N e ws Making travel easy Booking travel today can be complicated and stressful. With Trips, Airbnb aims to make it easy with one app to book most of your travel needs. Trip Itinerary is a new feature that brings together everything the traveller needs to know into one simple timeline, with the ability to easily book and add Experiences or things to do. Over time, this capability will evolve based on machine learning to dynamically suggest personalised and contextual, i.e. based on location, recommendations during a Trip. Airbnb’s vision is to ultimately cater for every aspect of a trip, making it both easy and magical from start to finish.
Identity Authentication The launch of Trips also sees the introduction of a new identity authentication process that the Airbnb Experiences Community will be using. Hosts and guests will be asked to scan an official government ID (for example a passport, or driving license) and then take a simple selfie. After the ID is authenticated, the ID and selfie will be reviewed to confirm that both pictures appear to match. Having a more robust standard of authenticating identity will make the Airbnb community stronger and reaffirms Airbnb’s ongoing commitment to authenticity, reliability, and security. This new identity authentication step is required for all Experiences users, and is also currently being tested for homes bookings. Trips also leverages Airbnb’s existing Trust & Safety measures including a 250+ person global 24/7 support team, secure payments, messaging, profiles & reviews, and a new $1 million liability insurance program for eligible Experience hosts.
More about Airbnb Founded in 2008, Airbnb’s mission is to create a world where people can belong when they travel by being connected to local cultures and having unique travel experiences. Its community marketplace provides access to millions of unique accommodations from apartments and villas to castles and treehouses in more than 34,000 cities and 191 countries. With Experiences, Airbnb offers unprecedented access to local communities and interests, while Places lets people discover the hidden gems of a city as recommended by the people that live there. Airbnb is people powered and the easiest way to earn a little extra income from extra space in a home or from sharing passions, interests and cities. People in the following cities can request to list their Experience on Trips: Amsterdam, Athens, Bangkok, Barcelona, Beirut, Berlin, Boston, Buenos Aires, Buffalo (NY), Cape Town, Cartagena, Chicago, Detroit, Dubai, Dublin, Florence, Harlem, Havana, Ho Chi Minh City, Lisbon, London, Los Angeles, Madrid, Mexico City, Miami, Moscow, Nairobi, Nashville, New Delhi, New Orleans, Oahu, Osaka, Paris, Portland, Prague, Provence, Queenstown, Reykjavik, Rio De Janeiro, Rome, San Francisco, Sao Paulo, Seattle, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, Toronto, Vancouver.

Stellar Cast Announced For The Fugard Theatre’s Smash Hit Musical West Side Story, Heading To Johannesburg By Overwhelming Popular Demand In Jan 2017 After receiving rave reviews across the board from critics and audiences alike, Eric Abraham and the Fugard Theatre’s grandscale, smash hit, all South African production of West Side Story will be presented at the Mandela Theatre (Joburg Theatre) by popular demand from 24 January 2017. West Side Story ended a staggeringly successful, sold-out run at the Artscape Opera House in Cape Town last year, and was the Fugard Theatre’s first out-of-house production, five years on from the theatre’s official launch in 2010. Eric Abraham and the Fugard Theatre, the creators and producers of other outstanding runaway Fugard Theatre hits like The Rocky Horror Show, Kat & the Kings, Orpheus in Africa, Cabaret and District Six Kanala, have created a phenomenal 100% South African production on an unprecedented grand-scale that left audiences mesmerised night after night in its debut season. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, the tale is set in the Upper West Side neighbourhood in New York City in the mid-1950s. The musical explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two street gangs of different backgrounds. The members of the Sharks are taunted by the Jets. The young protagonist, Tony, a former member of the Jets and best friend of the gang leader, Riff, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks. The sophisticated music, extended dance scenes, and the focus on social conflict marked a turning point in American musical theatre. West Side Story is a must-see that is guaranteed to be a highlight on Johannesburg’s 2017 theatre calendar. The season will run from 24 January to 5 March 2017 and tickets are now on sale through 021 461 4554, Computicket, 08619158000 or from the Joburg Theatre directly. Given the anticipation about this stellar musical and how the Cape Town season sold out, advance booking is highly recommended. The producers recommend an age restriction of 12 years with parental guidance. ADVANCE BOOKING IS RECOMMENDED.
