Place of Elephants, Place of Tranquillity! There is nothing we love more than a good story, especially one that captivates your soul and touches your heart. There is something awesome about man and beast coming together, about humanity and nature touching swords, while realising dreams. We are entranced by one man’s success where others have failed and we have a hearty respect for patience, endurance, compassion and above all empathy. Each one of us wants to touch God’s earth in the places where it counts; in places where His hand has surely cast a path and Thula Thula Private Game Reserve in the heart of Zululand in KwaZulu Natal is one of those places. With its lush green vegetation, the 4500 hectares envelop you with their richness, as savannah becomes forest, becomes sky... 100 years ago elephant was a natural species to the Zululand region; integration, hunting and human factors changed the lay of the land. When Lawrence Anthony and his wife Françoise through sheer determination and a willing spirit re-introduced a traumatised herd into the reserve, they undoubtedly had to conjure all the patience, endurance, compassion, and tenacity they could to save these incredible mammals from certain death. And succeed in the formidable task of ensuring that this herd of elephants was at home in the hills of Zululand. Their success has opened up the opportunity for local South African and international tourists alike to enjoy seeing elephants in their natural surroundings in this pristine area. The herd of 24 with its new calf of just a few weeks old and a brand new baby elephant just born at the time of writing is thriving in this rich hinterland. Thula Thula Private Game Reserve is not unlike many other South African game lodges, except that it has these beautiful anecdotes in Lawrence Anthony’s novels; The Elephant Whisperer and The Last Rhinos. Most importantly it has memories, his and his families, and it has a history, one worth telling, and one worth listening to around the boma fire. This legendary story can be told from the game drive vehicle while discovering the heart of Africa’s bushveld whether it is viewing the potentially elusive herd or enjoying a journey of giraffe, a rhino sighting or observing a lone crocodile on the banks of the Enseleni River.

APPEAL to Support: THULA THULA RHINO FUND

Thula Thula Rhinos, Thabo and Ntombi are two orphans who arrived at Thula Thula when they were 4 and 8 months old. Armed guards accompany Thabo and Ntombi 24/7 to guard against poachers. With a gunfight having taken place a few months ago – as Thabo got shot in the front leg – the need for increasing protective measures is a harsh reality. In memory of Lawrence, and to assist with the protection and preservation of Thula Thula’s two special rhinos, Françoise established the THULA THULA RHINO FUND, (as a chapter of “Earth Org”) in order to raise funds for guards’ anti poaching training and much-needed specialized equipment, to ensure the on-going survival of our rhinos, as well as to acquire more orphans in the future.

Grey Matters:

Life, death and the complexities of Zimbabwe’s elephant population

Words by Gemma Catlin, Images by Aaron Gekoski and Gemma Catlin. For 10 months of the year Hwange National Park is home to one of Earth’s most incredible wildlife spectacles. Yet every summer a manmade resource is having a catastrophic effect on the animals and habitat. As you read this, thousands of malnourished and thirsty elephants are struggling their way through the harsh summer months. A myriad of factors, including prolonged periods of drought and human encroachment, are bringing the National Park to crisis point. The catalyst can be traced back some 70 years, when Hwange’s founder, Ted Davison first introduced artificial water supplies. Ted had watched the Park’s modest elephant population migrating during the summer months, each year they came into conflict with man and returned in smaller numbers. He wanted to offer the animals a suitable and safe habitat so they didn’t need to leave, whilst enabling the Park’s tourism to thrive. It worked – the elephants stayed, their numbers escalated and lodges began to open. Despite Davison’s good intentions, Hwange was to be altered in ways that no one could have envisaged. Elephant populations quickly doubled and continued to grow steadily at around 5% p.a. Their 300-kilogram a day diet began to impact on the environment, particularly during the dry season (from September to November). 30-years later the results have been devastating, and as we approach 2013, the Park finds itself facing an impossible predicament. I have just returned from Zimbabwe with the Ecomentaries film crew, our new company which specialises in ‘green’ productions (www. ecomentaries.org). The team, including my other half, director Aaron Gekoski, filmmaker Chris Scarffe and Editor Werner Kruse, were in Hwange to investigate the current situation. No amount of research could have prepared us for the hundreds of starving elephants we witnessed pushing and shoving around the arid pans. Their skin sagging loosely over their hungry bodies, ribs jutting out from impossibly thin torsos and sunken skulls wrinkled with dehydration. I can still hear their distressed bellows as they fought for space at overcrowded waterholes. Not all made it: the air was full with the stench of decay and lives wasted. We spent 3-weeks searching for some answers. We questioned,

listened and learned. But every scientist, vet, local community member and tour operator articulated the problem, and therefore the solution, in a slightly different way. We followed the struggles of one operator, Imvelo (www.imvelosafarilodges.com), who (at great cost) pumps more water than any individual in the park. Owner Mark Butcher believes that maintaining the artificial situation is merely a short-term Band-Aid. However, he cannot simply sit back and watch the animals die whilst the battle for a long-term solution continues. “I have inherited this problem and cannot bring myself to stop the supply, despite it not being the answer. Simply turning the water off would be catastrophic for Hwange.” In fact, water not being the sole solution was the only consensus we found. World-renowned elephant expert Professor Rudi van Aarde even went as far as describing it as an elephant death sentence; “it’s animal cruelty” he tells us “we are tricking nature into keeping wildlife in an unsuitable habitat.” Van Aarde is an advocate of ‘rezoning’. He claims that opening up migration corridors and enabling elephants to move easily between suitable habitats during the dry months is the answer. This would minimise their interaction with humans (“elephants do not like being around people” he tells us). Yet what of the communities that would have to uproot for these migratory paths, not to mention the cost and logistics involved? The more people we spoke to the more multifaceted the scenario became. For every well thought out solution, a string of ele-sized stumbling blocks remain. Throughout the film we listen to the experts and examine all the proposed solutions; from culling to contraception; translocation to ‘nature’ taking its course. The issue is unarguably a convoluted and complex one, surrounded by question marks and opinions. Grey Matters will offer an in depth and impartial examination of one of Africa’s most pertinent wildlife issues. Whilst Imvelo generously donated filming cost funds, we have now launched a campaign on crowd-funding platform Indiegogo, to enable us to edit and promote the documentary (after all, what good is a great story, when it sits on the edit room floor?). Please keep your ears open and trunks sniffing for more news of our film.

To support the film, please email info@ecomentaries.org For more information on Ecomentaries, head to: www.ecomentaries.org. To learn more about Imvelo, please visit: www.imvelosafarilodges.com.

Lusaka - London on a

bamboo bicycle 74 days, 8371 km pedaled, and Africa seen at a different speed.

In June 2012, Sport2build started a solo ride across Africa on a bamboo bicycle - a journey across Africa - a journey of people and nature - following the very rhythm of the dusty African roads, and the people living there. This journey spread a message of peace, equality and development through an innovative, and at the same time fundamental tool - Sport.

LONDON

KENYA

FRANCE

TANZANIA

The expedition, led by Matteo Sametti (ex accountant, sportsman and co-founder of Sport2build), had as its final destination the British capital for the Paralympics, a symbolic arrival which aimed to highlight the fundamental role of sport, for social development, and to promote inclusion and non-discrimination. The ride had the patronage of the Italian Embassy in Lusaka, and the Ambassador Piermario Daccò showed his support by pedaling the first few kilometers with a group of local people who wanted to symbolically accompany Matteo at the departure from Chongwe. Matteo rode solo through Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt, from where he flew to Milan, and entered France from Moncenisio. On the 28th August 2012 he arrived in London after two and a half months, on his inseparable travelling companion the bamboo bicycle, he cycled more than 8300 km in 74 days - on tar, gravel, mud and sand - experiencing the cold of Ethiopia, and the torrid heat of Sudan. Along the way this journey raised curiosity not only because of the distance it covered, but also because of the strange bamboo bike. The bike was made in Zambia by Zambikes. Somebody asked him: “Didn’t you have money to get a plane?” Matteo had the chance to meet fantastic people, and this cemented his certainty that sport is a common element that unites races and religions. During the Euro 2012 Championship everybody talked about Balotelli even in the most distant bar in the world in the middle of nowhere … This extraordinary journey had a double objective; to spread a message of peace and

social inclusion through sport; and to raise funds for a new school that Sport2build wants to build in Zambia. Sport, art and music will pay an active role in the school curriculum, offering the children the possibility to develop holistically. The school will take care, mainly of those children that have been left behind, those that are not part of the formal school system, including children with special needs and learning difficulties, enabling them to develop, learn, and grow in a safe, healthy and secure environment. Every stage of the journey has been narrated, day by day, on the Sport2build Facebook page and on the website blog www.sport2build.org.

Best Eco-Friendly Golf Destinations in the World By Lindsay France

Moscow

For many there is nothing more relaxing than 18 holes at an excellent resort, no matter how far they have to travel. Let’s look at a few destinations that are worth the time spent in the air, due to their unique natural surroundings, and excellent offerings. Although Russia may not be the first place that comes to mind when fantasising about a tee-off, many people who find themselves in the countries capital for business or pleasure are surprised to find that golf has put its stamp on the social life here, beginning with the Moscow Country Club. The beauty of the concept is that as Russia’s first 18-hole par 72 course, it appeals to a wide range of golfers with a classic strategy, and unique to-it’s location setting. The course is surrounded by deep Russian forest of large evergreens, birch. And No, you most likely won’t see a bear.

Home of the “The Russian Open”, an event on the PGA European Tour, was designed by one of the world’s finest golf architects, Robert Trent Jones Jr. well known in golf circles as a leader in his field. Non-members are welcomed during the week, but entrance is subject to availability on the weekends. And it just wouldn’t be Russian without the spa offerings featuring private Banya, or Russian Bath. After the invigorating extreme temperatures of the Banya, head out to the New Jerusalem Monastery, founded in the seventeenth century, or the breath-taking nineteenth century Arkhangelskoe estate building by Prince Yusupov, (one of the centres of Moscow’s high life in the nineteenth and twentieth century).

GREECE

For some of most picturesque and beautiful weather in the golfing world, head to Greece’s Costa Navarino resort located on the southwest Peloponnese. It boasts two courses: The Dunes course is par 72 and manoeuvres through olive and fruit groves, and along a small river. This course is perfect for all skill levels. Just a few minutes away The Bay course, also designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., places a greater emphasis on strategic play and positional golf. This par 71 offers panoramic sea and mountain views, with several holes along the Bay of Navarino.

Keeping all these greens pristine can be hugely detrimental to nature, which is why many golf courses around the world are striving for various “green” certifications – some more discerning than others. The National Audubon Society strives to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, and has extended that to certifications for golf courses. Achieving Audubon certification isn’t easy, and the fact so many courses do it means high-spending clientele are attracted to this management style - ‘which I believe is a good sign for the industry.’

FLORIDA

For an excellent example of what Audobon certification can look and play like head to Jupiter Florida for the Ritz Carlton’s Audobon Certified golf course and resort. It’s elegant, secluded and efficient. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, it covers the bases with wildlife & habitat management, chemical use reduction and water conservation.

Plus, it features a lavish spa, fitness and tennis center for travel companions who may prefer to stay off the green. Jupiter is known for its glorious natural surroundings, but for a more metropolitan feel Palm Beach and Miami are 25 minutes and one hour away respectively so you can get a flavour for the local night life before waking at dawn to hit the links.

A Tale of an African to Russia’s Cosmodrome

by Thabang Motsei (Moscow)

In my youth, I used to keep journals; I guess that’s how I fell in love with writing. I remember when I was in middle school; I wrote that I wanted to be the first African woman astronaut; 43 years ago space flights inspired such awe and almost everyone young and old alike-hailed astronauts as heroes and celebrities. Being brought up in South Africa post-apartheid, the rest of the world seemed so far away but I knew even then that I would not be limited within the borders of my country. My wanderlust was fuelled at a young age, going as far as dreaming of going into outer space myself. I never did become an astronaut instead I chose to become a journalist and through my work I have been fortunate to live-out some of my childhood dreams, and was very excited this year when the call came in that my next assignment was heading out to Baikonur’s Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, for the launch of Expedition 32/33 in the Soyuz TMA-05M spacecraft launching to the International Space Station (ISS).

NEXT STOP BAIKONUR, KAZKHAKSTAN After a four-hour flight, I touched down to the scorching heat of Baikonur in Kazakhstan. Upon arrival and after going through intense security checks, as one needs a special

14

permit to officially be there (you can’t make an unexpected visit to Baikonur without permission as it is military controlled), I also had to sign a decree citing I will not go beyond the base town unaccompanied or take pictures without permission. This is when being a journalist helps, as a few rules can be bent. This deserted and dry looking town or rather more of a nomads land, houses Russia’s Cosmodrome, where the Soyuz, the manned shuttle would take off. The Cosmodrome was built in the 50’s and extends for 85 km from North to South, and from 125 km from East to West, a territory as great as Moldova. Aside from dozens of launch

Special Feature – Moscow pads it includes five tracking-control centers, 9 tracking stations, and a 1500 km rocket test range. It’s also the oldest space launch facility in the world. Vostok 1, the first manned spacecraft in human history, was launched from one of Baikonur’s launch pads, which is presently known as Gagarin’s Start. Baikonur, the city itself, if one can call it that (although officially it is), resonates with reminders from the “glorious” past of the Soviet Union. A supporting town was built around the facility to provide housing, schools and support infrastructure for workers. You’ll want to relive those Flash Gordon fantasies where 1959 still exists today. Not much to do around the small city, except taking pictures of the odd flock of camels looking rather at home in the dry area. The people were curious and their smiles infectious. In between work, I had some time to venture into their world, from the colourful markets where local artifacts and crafts are sold at a bargain, to going back to my childhood with local kids at the fairground and enjoying candy-floss while strolling the cool streets at night. Life is simple here, family life nurtured and every night, parents would come out for dinner in the local restaurants where the aroma of Kazah BBQ meat fills the air and is served with fresh vegetable and assortment of cold Kazah soup.

LAUNCH DAY: July 15th 2012 At 2am Sunday morning of the launch we all gathered at the Soyuz-Progress spacecraft’s Assembly building to bid the team farewell. It would be another five hours before they blast off into orbit. As we made our way to the viewing site, the sun started to rise in the distance and the horizon turned orange, shadows of camels appeared in sight, to the sound of our beating hearts. My mind wondered off to South African Mark Shuttleworth, the first African and second space tourist to launch to space. He launched from Baikanur too and in true un-bashful show of wealth, he came to earth after his 10-day space mission and purchased a mock-up of the “Soyuz TM-33” descent capsule, which had successfully delivered him back to Earth, as well as his space suit. How amazing it must have been for him and how proud South Africa was too! I could only console myself at the notion that, I was probably one of a handful of African women who have up to now been given the opportunity to witness this. After sunrise, cameras perched in their right position, my mike in hand, script in memory; I was ready for the countdown. As I counted down Sunita Williams, Akihiko Hoshide and Yuri Malenchenko, I, Thabang Motsei, called out the two magic words into camera “lift off” and turned away from camera to watch rocket science at its best. The most nerve wrecking, body rocking, unimaginable sight for a minute and half, holding my breath, in amazement, in awe. Imagine, three people sitting on 1 million gallons of rocket fuel, re-entering the earth’s atmosphere at 1,870 miles per hour, in a capsule, with nothing to stop them! After 8 minutes it was announced the crew were in orbit, we all took a breather and applauded! It was the most highpressured nine and a half minutes of my career and the most exhilarating for the little girl in me who once dreamed of becoming an astronaut.

These names may not be instantly recognisable but for generations since the early ‘60’s to modern day the unique sounds of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons are often echoed with responses such as “I know that number!” when familiarity and recognition of the band’s hit songs such as Sherry, Walk like a Man, Rag Doll, Oh What a Night and

Can’t Take My Eyes Off You kicks in. These and numerous other Four Seasons songs have been covered by many of today’s pop artists, proving the diverse appeal and appreciation of this music as it lives on through the generations. Waterkloof Winery and Restaurant “The Hidden Gem’ in the Helderberg”

Waterkloof, is an unforeseen gem hidden at the top of the hills of the Schapenberg, in Somerset West. As one winds ones way up the driveway from Sir Lowry’s Pass Road, one is amazed by the unexpected architecture of Waterkloof’s winery and restaurant. Paul Boutinot, the proprietor, who has had many years of experience with wines is hands on and produces organic biodynamic wines. Claudia Young-Kelly, the Sales and Marketing Manager says, “The architecturally impressive restaurant, was built for promoting the wines, and the food is prepared around the wine.” YoungKelly adds, “Paul’s vision was to create transparency, nothing was to be behind closed doors, so visitors are able to see everything.” As you enter into Waterkloof’s restaurant, there is the feeling of spaciousness, from high glass windows to the wine tasting lounge and winery, to the open-plan kitchen, nothing is hidden, everything is functional even the cellar below is visual, and can host a private function. The almost 360 degree, panoramic views of the vineyards, mountains and sea of Gordon’s Bay and Strand leave an everlasting and imprinted memory. Young-Kelly enthusiastically says, “The food we use is our own produce and is both fresh and seasonal, we support the local community such as Healey’s Farmhouse Cheddar, which is now part of the Waterkloof family. We also have our own bottled spring water from the natural spring on the farm.” Waterkloof Wines are named the Honest Range of Wines, which are Waterkloof, Circle of Life and Circumstance Wines. These wines are paired with special dishes that, as Young-Kelly says, “Are contemporary and have a French twist.” Waterkloof’s gourmet cuisine paired with their delicious wines, offer the palate an unforgettable experience. It is a hidden and unparalleled diamond, situated in the Helderberg. For more information on Waterkloof Estate contact Tel: (+27)21 858 1491 or visit: www.waterkloofwines.co.za.

Books / CD’s / DVD’s Rhett Walker Band - Come to the River - Rock CD (ISBN: ESCD8306109402 / Price: R51.50) “I won’t be caged to the status quo. I’m not afraid to stand and say what people won’t.” This lyric, taken from the song Get Up Get Out, off of Rhett Walker Band’s debut album, Come to the River, is one of several clues that this is not going to be your typical Christian music band or album. With a bold message reminiscent of Rich Mullins, Keith Green plus contemporaries including Casting Crowns and southern and rock influences like Third Day, NEEDTOBREATHE, The Black Crowes and Tom Petty, Rhett Walker Band not only stands out among the pack but, once heard, cannot be forgotten. The songs on Come to the River have a raw honesty not usually heard and cover relatable themes of grace, redemption and mercy. The album’s first single, When Mercy Found Me, tells Rhett’s story of a life headed in a wrong direction compounded by choices that were breaking him. This shares how mercy and grace radically changed his path and gave him freedom. Other stand-out songs include the opener, Gonna Be Alright, Brother and the title track, Come to the River. Rhett Walker understands grace; he’s been a recipient of mercy. He loves God, his family and his country. “So, there are two things we must do. One: rejoice because we have a purpose on this earth – to share that grace with others. Two: take up the calling. You can’t just take that love and not tell the story that goes with it.” – Rhett Walker

Down The Line Author: Gary Hirson ISBN: ISBN 978-0-620-52729-3 / Website: www.garyhirson.com The Southern Line train line snakes between Cape Town and Simonstown - 37 kilometres of some of the most spectacular scenery in South Africa. But talk about incongruities. The windows at times are so grimy that the mountains and ocean are mere smudges in the distance. Some of the modern coaches are spruced-up, others smeared with offensive graffiti. Businessmen in suits rub shoulders with bling hipsters; beggars share seats with tourists. Some commuters sit comfortably while others hang out the moving carriages, hoping to arrive at their station alive and on time. Over 3.5 million commuters depend on the line monthly, but a late, idling, or cancelled train is common. Yet at times it all seems so smooth. Ticket office open, security guards patrolling, trains on schedule, and spotless coaches make for an effortless journey Down The Line. Down The Line consists of 118 colour and black & white images portraying an honest reportage of the diversity in South Africa which include images of; the trains, stations, personnel and commuters from the first train in the morning until the last train at night. The 15 personal paragraphs accompanying the pictures -given by commuters- gives a clear understanding of South African commuting life on this well travelled line. On very few occasions – if any- has a photographer been allowed to photograph this line making this photographic coffee table book unique. This book isn’t a normal “glossy” travel book but rather an artistic, authentic, photo-essay. It is not a promotional book for Metrorail. Author: Bruce Clark (ISBN: 978-1-4152-0170-1 (print) / ISBN: 978-1-4152-0464-1 (e-book) / Price: R180

A child-rearing father’s hilarious, heart-rending confessions on parenthood and childhood… Bruce Clark, the world’s best dad, had a nightmare childhood that spewed him out onto the streets at age 17, uneducated and livid. Deep into adulthood he remained pretty much like that, until the love of a good woman grounded him. They got married and, at age 48, he was a father. His story begins there. Love, Sex, Fleas, God is Bruce’s terrifically sad and funny account of parenthood seen through the eyes of one who knows about vulnerability. A father who would do anything to protect his children and rear them well and a man who feels a stab every day as his wife leaves for work. Tending to infants, gently nudging their ascendancy, reduced to barely more than their launch pad into life, Bruce tells a story that turns What Women Want on its feet. This book will make you laugh and cry. It will grip your heart and show both the adult and child in you how frail and glorious a human life is. It is for everyone who has ever cared for a child.
