FROM THE EDITOR... It is not often that I find myself on the last day of the month, sitting outside a chalet in one of South Africa’s esteemed game reserves enjoying the gentle autumn breeze. The hum of the wind as it plays with the trees, and the echolalia of the bush veld stirring my senses. This morning we stood within moments of one of nature’s gentle giants, and as with every close encounter with an animal of this magnitude one’s breath is instantly captured, and peace resonates as everything else in the world comes to a standstill. One can only consider it a privilege to experience the gentle rumblings as the elephant looks out of the corner of his eye, softly flapping his ears, letting us know he is aware of our presence. Tomorrow the big smoke beckons return, but as with every trip to the bush veld, each memory leaves us slightly changed. This issue brings you some new destinations and discoveries both near and far, and as always we endeavour to provide a little bit of Travel indulgence for everyone. May you strive to enjoy moments that take your breath away in the month ahead.

Bordeaux WITH A
T
his month I would like to introduce you to an enchanting wine from Mitre’s Edge Wine Estate, a family owned and managed boutique winery dedicated to creating small batches of high-quality, meticulously crafted wines for the enjoyment of the serious wine lover. Situated in the foothills of the Simonsberg Mountains, between Paarl and Stellenbosch, winemaker Lola Nicholls, assisted by husband Bernard, use a gentle, hands-on approach with minimal mechanical intervention in the vineyards - while nurturing the wines in their small cellar to ensure that each wine is special and unique in character. The estate boasts a stunning Cape Georgian-styled manor house, where small functions and wine tastings can be hosted, a charming private wine cellar - the perfect setting to sample their fine wines - as well as accommodation in an elegant four sleeper guest house. I had the privilege of meeting and chatting to Lola at the Sommelier’s Selection 2016 tasting last year where I sampled the gorgeous 2012 Sholto red, which was selected in the “Elegant/Classy reds” category. Lola has a passion for Bordeaux wines, these being the estate’s focus. However they also produce some Shiraz, a Chenin Blanc and Viognier.

Sholto is a classic Bordeaux style blend comprised of 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, 9% Malbec and 9% Petit Verdot. Released in 2015, in memory of Lola’s father Martin Sholto Hunting, who passed on his legacy and passion for viniculture, Sholto is a perfectly apt name for this wine. Gaelic in origin and meaning “sower” the wine pays homage to all the years of hard work he invested in planting and nurturing these vines. For me, there are few things better with an epic glass of red wine than a tender juicy steak, so feeling inspired, I stepped it up a notch. My concoction - medium rare chargrilled beef rump on a bed of steamed green beans, smothered in a creamy mustard-mushroom sauce with a side of pumpkin fritters, finished off with a drizzle of truffle oil. I also decanted the Sholto a good 30 minutes before sitting down to enjoy this feast. An alluring deep burgundy in the glass, this wine is striking to behold. I delightedly inhaled the intense aromas, which show themselves off with unabashed self-assurance. Freshly picked forest berries – mulberries, raspberries and blueberries dominate. A pure earthy smell like recently picked unwashed berries entices, with spicy scents of mace and cloves providing

extra entertainment for your nose. Full bodied and weighty, this wine packs a serious punch. Jammy concentrated blueberry and ripe red cherry flavours work in perfect harmony with robust tobacco, black pepper and cinnamon spiciness. All of this is gently upheld by supple juicy tannins, a touch of oak and wood spice with some black cherry and mulberry nuances. It all comes together in a dazzling well-rounded silky smooth symphony of flavours and a satisfying long lingering finish. A wine with great finesse!
Where/When/How Would I drink this: To embolden me with Dutch courage to explain to my husband that I just spent R10 000 on shoes – using his credit card. Person most likely to drink this wine: My boss. This is the wine I should have served to him (in copious amounts) six and a half years ago, to soften the blow before I had to anxiously break some rather awkward news to him. Being unemployed at the time, I gratefully accepted his job offer, while in the interview he asked me if I was planning on starting a family in the near future. Overly confident, I responded that I was not in the slightest bit interested in having babies, and that he had absolutely no reason to be concerned. Fast forward five weeks - the company closed for Christmas break, during which I received my very own Christmas surprise – two clear blue lines on a pregnancy test. I had to return to work in January, sweating bullets over having to tell my employer of less than two months that I would be taking three months off work in nine months’ time to have that baby, I said I wouldn’t be having. True story. Empty Bottle Rating: There was not a drop left. I would also advise not sharing this with anyone. Grand For Your Rand: ex. Cellar at R215.00 - my advice, “Go on, spoil yourself!” Mitre’s Edge Sholto is currently available at selected wine retailers in Cape Town as well as directly from the estate who deliver door to door. THE POT LUCK CLUB I “Good food is a celebration of life”, said Sophia Loren, a woman who oozed joie de vivre.
Perched at the very top of the silo at the Old Biscuit Mill, you step off the elevator into a stylishly designed interior that seats 120, has an open plan kitchen and showcases 360-degree views of the Mother City. Uber chef Luke Dale-Roberts of The Test Kitchen and, more recently The Shortmarket Club fame, drew inspiration for his menu from his forays into Asia, Africa, South America and Europe and the offering is changed up on a regular basis. Plate-sharing, tapas style, is the thing at TPLC. Small dishes - divided into 5 basic tastes namely salty, sour, bitter, sweet and umami - make dining in a group much more fun, as everyone orders something different and feasting becomes a festive social affair. I recently joined a swish guest list to sample new and existing culinary creations… from sublime combinations like the miso cured aubergine with carrot dressing, blueberry wine reduction and umami puree (salty), to the smoked beef fillet with black pepper and truffle cafe au lait (umami), and burrata cheese, grilled nectarines, rose water and vejuice dressing and pistachio dukkah (sweet), the fish tacos (sour), and as a grand finale or ‘sweet ending’, the braaid banana risotto, mango, litchi and avocado ice cream is beyond. This is food theatre at its finest with a great wine list. The Pot Luck Red (2013) is highly recommended and the cocktails are unique and exceptional. “We all want the same thing, for the diner to be blown away by the combination of flavours and the taste experience that we have put so much effort into creating”, says Luke. Mission accomplished I’d say! There are two dinner sittings, from 6pm to 8:30pm, and from 8:30pm onwards. Booking is best via http://thepotluckclub.co.za/contact/ or call 0214470804. May is now open for reservations.

f I could, all I’d ever make for dinner, every night of my life, is reservations. I count eating out as my reward for pretty much everything, and I find any excuse to do it. Who can blame me though when I live in Cape Town, named the best food city in the world last year by Condenast Traveller. Capetonians are ridiculously spoilt for choice here on the tip of Africa, with endless top-notch options to celebrate great cuisine, from Sea Point to Stellenbosch and all that lies between. One of my favourites has to be The Pot Luck Club in Woodstock, established in 2013.

CAPE POINT T
here is nothing I love more than to explore South Africa, starting with my own city Cape Town. This country offers locals and tourists everything in terms of natural beauty, outstanding food and wine, entertainment and historical landmarks - a multitude of satisfying options on one’s doorstep.
One of the best things to do on a glorious day in any season is to jump on a bus - yes a double decker tour bus- and take a slow drive from the CBD to Cape Point, stopping at the penguin sanctuary at Boulders Beach on the way. Winding along the coastal road, you encounter quaint and picturesque seaside villages and towns like Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, St James and Glencairn, reaching your destination, at the ‘tip’ of Africa after an hour or so. Touring by bus is not something I opt to do very often but it’s a fabulous way to see a city, particularly if you’re new to it and are travelling with young children or elderly people. It gives a quick overview of a destination and enables you to make informed choices about places you’d like to revisit that you’ve passed along the route.

Cape Point, a promontory at the south-east corner of the Cape Peninsula, lies on the southwestern tip of the continent within the same national park as Table Mountain. the back of which can actually be seen on a crisp clear day. The air is amongst the purest in the world and is thus home to one of Global Research Watch’s (GAW) atmospheric research stations that monitor climate change. The plant life is diverse and with more than 1000 species, this reserve has more floral species than in the entire United Kingdom. Bird life thrives here, with more than 270 recorded varieties from tiny sunbirds, to majestic eagles and gangly ostriches, as well as other fauna like wild zebra, buck and the pesky, at times aggressive baboons that you are strongly advised to avoid, and to NEVER feed. The Flying Dutchman Funicular takes visitors up to the old (non functioning) red and white lighthouse, built in 1859 and standing 238 metres above sea level at the highest point of the peak. The 360-degree views over the ocean and surrounding beaches and cliffs are breathtaking - “one point, a million points of view”, as someone once said. There are numerous walks through the conservancy and mountain biking is also very popular. For those less energetic, there is the option to spend a few hours lazing on the blinding white sands of Diaz Beach, although swimming is not advised because of the unpredictable strong ocean currents. Whatever your fancy, a day trip to Cape Point is highly recommended - an exceptional experience and another reason to love South Africa!

ay swoops in on the Monday of my long weekend and, despite my childish protests and kicking and screaming, ushers me back to work, away from the bliss and momentary respite of my weekend get-away. After profane muttering, heel scuffing and all sorts of distasteful sulking I dusted myself off and got back into the throng of work and studies. Spending five days in the serenity of the bushveld, five glorious days of peace with nothing to do but appreciate the fauna and flora of the Balule Nature reserve just outside Hoedspruit in Mpumalanga, makes it hard to return to a stuffy office and the world’s squeakiest desk chair. Unsurprisingly my inspiration to unpack South African travel remains unaltered and I am as excited as ever to discover this month’s travel industry news and more of South Africa’s best destinations begging to be unravelled.

Hotel Review
BELLE MARE PLAGE HOTEL
W
ith so many extravagant destinations across the globe, natural marvels in abundance and a plethora of beautiful locations, there are but a few intricacies that separate the truly memorable locations from the mild and utterly replaceable. Keagan Lamb looks at one such intricacy - original and authentic design, and a well-designed hotel should enhance its setting, rather than hinder or even overpower it. The Belle Mare Plage Hotel has a duo of expert interior designers at the helm of their quest for design perfection, Marc Hertrich and Nicolas Adnet. The inspiring design brief represents an idea of getting back to one’s roots by enhancing existing architectural and historic aspects and mixing traditional local elements with the new and contemporary. The design idea of modern luxury exudes refined grandeur combined with welcoming simplicity to find equilibrium. Drawing from the local artisanal talents in Mauritius and other Indian Ocean regions, everything from the sandblasted wooden cladding in the entrance lobby - a reference to the old creole hut - to the black tortoise shell mosaic path, adds a touch of style and elegance. Marc and Nicolas opted for a simple layout inspired by a harmonious connection with nature and the environment, and evoke the neighbouring sea with drops of blue, contrasting a black and white dominance. The interior is made more extravagant by harnessing the natural light, transparency and bright tones to bring to life the furniture, lights and decorative objects specifically designed for the Bel Mare hotel. Like in the lobby, the wooden beams in the bar were kept in their natural state with a fresh new layout emphasising its ethereal features in the heart of the resort. Black marble resin and dust were used in the design of the room, somewhat emulating the design of a ship silhouette. The counter-height bar stools are made from wood and leather and are roomy and comfortable, and the design of the wall lamps is largely inspired by antique lanterns manufactured on the island. The beautiful restaurants including La caze - designed to look like a restyled creole hut, The indigo restaurant - homage to miraculous colour, La Spiaggia - with a uniquely red centred colour theme, Blue penny cellar - with the ambiance of a lavish wine cellar, and Deer hunter restaurant - overlooking the golf course, all offer differing design perspectives while capturing the intrinsic theme which is to allow the marvellous Mauritian setting to serve as a centre piece for it all. The redesigned rooms sport exquisite materials like upholstered leather headboards, cotton print fabric with turquoise-coloured patterns, ceramic bedside tables and a warm colour palette which all comes together to create a calming atmosphere. As if the picturesque beaches of Mauritius were not enough to tantalize even the most cynical travellers, the chic new design of the Belle Mare Plage Hotel makes it a destination which we should all add to the bucket list.

TRAVEL TIPS FOR FIRST TIME TRAVELLERS TO INDIA
It’s often said India’s vibrant cities overwhelm the senses with their myriad of sights, aromas and sounds, but truly understanding the enchanting nature of this nation can only be achieved in person. From the colourful bazaars to ancient stone forts, each city’s astonishing fusion of heritage and culture will leave a lasting impression. Theresa Szejwallo, Managing Director for Trafalgar, takes travellers through her top tips for first time travellers to India. “When you first visit India you can be overwhelmed by the experience as you journey through the extraordinary cities and take in the cultural insights, but take a deep breath and enjoy everything this incredible country has to offer,” says Theresa.
SECURE YOUR VISA IN ADVANCE Securing a tourist visa to visit India is easy for SA passport holders. All you need to do is apply with visa processing firm VFS and your visa should be ready within four to five working days. The visa is valid for visits of up to six months.
SET YOUR CLOCK TO INDIAN TIME India is between 3.5 hours ahead of South Africa, which is not substantial enough for you to have to adjust for jet lag. “It’s always a good idea to start fitting in with the local time immediately and I always set my watch to my destination’s time once I board the plane, even if it means having dinner at the time that would be breakfast back home,” says Theresa.
SAVOUR THE FLAVOURS OF INDIA Indian food is renowned for its tantalizing smells and flavors, with the most defining element of the cuisine being the herbs and spices used, incorporating pepper, turmeric, cardamom and curry leaves. “It’s a dream destination for vegetarians and if you’ve ever considered trying a meat-free diet, this is definitely the place to do it,” says Theresa. Rice is the staple to most dishes, as well as various types of bread such as chapattis and naan. Many people start their day which a cup of chai, a tea with cardamom and sugar - it will be the best tea you ever taste and quickly becomes addictive, in a good way. Alcohol is not traditionally part of the culture but is sold in restaurants in larger towns and cities and hotels. Avoid tap water and ice, unless you’re assured it has been made with filtered water and steer clear of any food that may have been washed in tap water. Bottled water is generally always readily available to purchase and many international hotels also have good filtered water systems. India has a diverse collection of sweet treats, so be sure to sample the local specialty in each different town or city that you visit.
RICH CULTURE India’s languages, religions, dance, music, architecture, food and customs differ from place to place within the country. “My favourite thing about India is that it is the home of Yoga, which I’ve been practising for over 20 years,” says Theresa, “I am so enamoured with Yoga that I studied to become a teacher of this incredible discipline.” Hatha Yoga is excellent at improving flexibility and joint mobility. It also strengthens, tones and builds muscles and corrects posture. Hindi is the language most widely spoken but there are many other languages which are spoken such as Punjabi, Bengali and Urdu. The religion of around 80% of the people is Hinduism, whilst Islam is practiced by around 13%. Other religions practiced are Sikhism, Ayyavazhi, Buddhism and Jainism. Embrace the local customs and traditions of whichever part of India you are travelling in and try to learn a few words of Hindi before you arrive – a ‘Namaste’ with your hands pressed together as a salutation is a very common form of greeting In India and is always wellreceived. ‘Shukran’ is thank you in Hindi and Arabic, an extremely useful word to remember.
DRESSING FOR CULTURE AND CLIMATE The climate in India varies from region to region as it stretches over such a wide geographical scale. Summer is from March to June, with the monsoon season generally being from June to September but Delhi and Rajasthan receive comparatively less rain. In summer, cotton is the ideal material and loose and lightweight

clothing will make your experience more comfortable when facing the high temperatures. It’s worth packing a jacket for the evenings and definitely don’t forget a light rain coat or umbrella if you’re visiting during the rainy season. “India has a relatively modest culture and covering shoulders, arms and legs is a simple step toward respecting this. I always travel with a couple of scarves and pashminas to cover up in temples and keep warm,” continues Theresa, “this, as well as removing shoes, is particularly important when visiting temples”.
SHOPPING India is a great destination for a spot of shopping with many winding bazaars, busy markets and shiny new malls. Haggling is customary in street markets and it’s important to stay calm and be pleasant but firm when doing this. For a truly Indian souvenir a sari is a good buy (it’s possible to buy these ready-made or stitched, so you don’t have to worry about managing the fabric folding when back home) or maybe an embroidered pashmina shawl, which is a great buy and a versatile travelling accessory. “India, much like Thailand and Vietnam, is home to the most wonderful tailors,”
says Theresa, “so make time to get a bespoke suit or shirt made while you’re in the country.” There’s a beautiful array of jewelry to choose from and whilst most is gold, silver is very popular too and is a great purchase if you’re in Rajasthan. Make sure you visit a local market or spice emporium – the smells and colors truly bring the Indian experience to life. You can buy sealed packets as great gifts to take home. And tea is a must when it comes to purchasing gifts for friends and family. Homewares are also a really good purchase and great value – you will find beautiful cotton bed throws and cushion covers at a fraction of the price you’d pay at home.

EMBRACE INCREDIBLE INDIA A land of contrasts and a total feast for the senses, there’s a good reason why it’s often referred to as Incredible India. A TOUCH OF CLASS!
I

was invited twice in the last month to visit the InterContinental O.R. Tambo Airport, and had the privilege of getting a taste of what this ‘fabulous’ hotel has to offer. Conveniently and strategically placed at the airport, it allows visitors the ideal stop over destination, however do not discount spending more time in this luxury hotel that is situated 100 metres from the airport and the Gautrain. From the minute you enter the hotel, welcoming staff are ready to offer you a personalised experience, and on both occasions I was warmly welcomed. My first visit was to view the Conference facilities, which allow for delegates to arrive at the airport and immediately arrive at their destination. Business people can also hire meeting rooms, which offer state of the art technology with video conferencing facilities. There is a facility available for every need and guests have the choice of 11 conference and function rooms in various configurations. Whether you need an intimate boardroom for a meeting between flights, or are hosting a seminar or launching a new product, and want a venue to host a cocktail function then you can ensure your every need will be indulged. And do not fear, high speed Wi-Fi is guaranteed. The hotel also has fitness centre, heated pool and the Camelot Spa. My second visit was to experience an interactive Chefs table with Executive Chef Yoshan Naido of Quills restaurant. Peach was the flavour of the day. Chef Yoshan, F&B Manager Thembu Mpofu and their team wowed us with a fun afternoon, MasterChef Style. We got to make a salmon and prawn roulade, and plate it alongside a salmon Spring Roll set upon mild curry sauce, accompanied by a salmon fish cake, and then we decorated it with edible flowers. We then tried our hand at making a Pomme William, shaping the potato mash into a pear shape, rolling it lightly in flour, beaten egg and breadcrumbs and then garnishing it with a sprig of rosemary. Where-after it was whisked away to be baked by the Chef, and superbly returned as an accompaniment on a delicious plate of Chicken Ballotine stuffed with pistachio nuts, chorizo and a medallions of chicken, smoky pork belly lardons and autumn vegetables. If this was not enough – the Amuse Bouche, deliciously and perfectly paired wines, peaches and apricot sorbet and decadent dessert, and staying true to the theme of the day – Peaches and Cream rounded off an eventful and fun afternoon. I have had the pleasure at eating at Quills restaurant on more than one occasion over the years, and I assure you that this delicious menu is just one of the many tricks they have up their sleeves.

This production of Hamlet re-imagines Shakespeare’s most iconic play within the context of the historic 1608 performance aboard The Red Dragon as a play within a play, utilising a cast of only 6 actors playing 6 Jacobean sailors who, in turn, play all the parts in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Critics have hailed it as a multi-sensory experience…imbued with wonder and as daring, modern, exciting and topical. The production stars Marcel Meyer in the title role, with veteran Shakespearean actor, Michael Richard taking the role of King Claudius. Dean Balie doubles as Polonius and Horatio with Jeremy Richard as Laertes, Matthew Baldwin as Ophelia and Callum Tilbury in the role of Queen Gertrude. Hamlet is at Monte from 3 May to 21 May 2017 and then at La MaMa in New York City in September. Performances Wed to Sat @ 8pm, Wed @ 3pm, Sat @ 4pm, Sun @ 3pm #HamletSA

AWARD-WINNING FAITH DRAMA VOICELESS WILL TACKLE HOT-BUTTON ISSUE OF PRO-LIFE “Voiceless is the first pro-life film that powerfully addresses the reasons why most people don’t engage the injustice of abortion. This film is brilliantly designed to inspire the Church to action.” ~Joe Baker, CEO Save The Storks From writer/director Pat Necerato comes Voiceless, a film that tackles the controversial pro-life vs. prochoice debate with conviction and compassion, and presents that the true choice is one the church must make. In the film, a young, reserved war veteran-turned-community outreach leader puts his life on the line to stand against an abortion clinic that has taken up shop across the street from his Philadelphia church. “Voiceless was made to engage the church,” said producer Stuart Migdon. “We believe our film artfully presents the issue in a way that pro-life supporters can rally behind without alienating pro-choice viewers before they’ve had a chance to contemplate our story.” The winner of multiple awards, Voiceless has been honored as Northeast Film Festival’s Best Feature and People’s Choice for Best Feature Film and Best Feature Film from the California Independent Film Festival.

GUIDE TO SEABIRDS OF SOUTHERN AFRICA Peter Ryan
Seabirds hold a special place in the hearts of birders, not least because of the challenge of getting to grips with a group of birds that is largely inaccessible, and living in an often hostile habitat. ‘Guide to Seabirds of Southern Africa’ is the first book focusing exclusively on the nearly 132 seabird species that occur around the southern african coastline and adjacent southern ocean. The book is primarily an ID guide, but the author includes information about these birds’ fascinating biology and behaviour. The text is richly supported with photographs, as well as distribution maps for all the birds. A detailed introduction covers, among other topics, seabird origins, havens, feeding,
breeding and conservation, as well as how best to watch and photograph these enigmatic birds. ISBN: 978 1 7758 4519 5 | R180.00
