La vocación fotográfica de Teresita Pérez Marchant se encauza a sus 17 años cuando obtiene su primera cámara réflex. Tras realizar estudios de arquitectura y diseño, cumple 23 y lanza su primer libro y exposición “Ando por Elqui”, registrando visualmente los versos de Gabriela Mistral en su valle natal. Su segundo libro, el cual muestra a través de la fotografía las principales exportaciones chilenas al extranjero, fue publicado el año 2010. La temática central de su obra gira en torno a Chile y sus paisajes naturales. Teresita Pérez Marchant became a passionate photographer at the age of 17 when she received her first reflex camera. After coursing studies of architecture and design, at 23 she published her first hardcover book “Ando por Elqui” (Going through Elqui), a visual take on the poems of Nobel Prize laureate Gabriela Mistral. Her second book, published in 2010, was a recollection of Chile´s main exports. The main drive for her work comes from Chile and its natural landscapes.

Radicado en Chile, ha recorrido Europa, el norte de África, Latinoamérica y Estados Unidos. Adentrarse en la cultura e historia del lugar, captar los lados B de los destinos y buscar alternativas a las rutas tradicionales turísticas son sus motivaciones a la hora de conjugar pluma y viaje. Diego is a Literature professor and is currently writing his master’s thesis on contemporary Chilean theater. Now living in Chile, he has toured through Europe, Northern Africa, Latin America and the United States. Delving into the culture and history of the places, grasping their B sides and seeking alternatives to the traditional tourist routes are his motivations when combining writing and traveling.

Gracias por compartir una nueva edición de Travel Time Magazine, en la que, estamos convencidos, encontrarán inspiración para un próximo viaje. Como lo hemos expresado en otras oportunidades, nuestra revista nace bajo la idea de que el sempiterno sueño humano de salir a viajar, conocer y compartir es inherente a nuestra naturaleza, y por lo tanto, queremos ofrecerles destinos y experiencias de todas partes del mundo. La evidencia nos señala que los chilenos y residentes en el país se mueven por los cinco continentes, tanto por trabajo, estudios, negocios, vacaciones y visitas a parientes y amigos. Se encontrarán con las ideas y propuestas del director de la OMT para las Américas, Carlos Vogeler, quien nos sorprendió hace algunas semanas cuando expresó a un medio local que Chile era el secreto mejor guardado. Dicha frase es, al mismo tiempo, un halago y un desafío, sobre todo para los esfuerzos de promoción del país en los mercados internacionales, cuyo monto, destino y distribución, entre otros aspectos, ha sido objeto de un interesante debate entre la subsecretaría de Turismo y Fedetur. Thank you for sharing with us a new edition of Travel Time Magazine, in which we believe you will find inspiration for an upcoming trip. As we have said on other occasions, our magazine was born under the idea that the eternal human dream of leaving to travel, learn and share is inherent to our nature, and therefore, we want to offer our readers destinations and experiences from around the world. The evidence indicates that Chileans living in the country travel among the five continents, either for work, study, business, holidays or visiting relatives and friends. You will find the ideas and proposals of the WTO director for the Americas, Carlos Vogeler, who surprised us a few weeks ago when he told a local media that Chile was the best kept secret. That sentence is at the same time a compliment and a challenge, especially regarding the efforts to promote the country in international markets, which amount, destination and distribution, among other things, have been the subject of an interesting debate between the undersecretary of Tourism and Fedetur. This edition of Travel Time is marked by the variety of articles and the special approach to the various topics given by our correspondents and contributors. Cuando César Augusto, primer emperador romano, perdió la batalla de Teutoburgo, decidió que la frontera norte de Roma sería el Rin, y de allí no pasarían. Desde esos días, el río ha funcionado como límite natural dentro de Europa, y la ciudad de Basilea, su puerto más austral, es un ejemplo de su transversalidad. La región es conocida en alemán como Dreiländereck y en francés como District des trois frontières, y para todos significa lo mismo: la triple frontera. Es la puerta norte de Suiza, y con sólo girar 45º, se ven Alemania y Francia, separadas apenas por unos pasos.

Es posible acostumbrarse a la pobreza y sus paisajes, como también a las riquezas del desarrollo. Pero nunca se podrá convivir pacíficamente si hay un contraste explícito entre ambos extremos. Es lo que sucede en el cruce más famoso entre Estados Unidos y México: El Paso/Juárez. Mientras del lado anglosajón se vive un ambiente universitario y tranquilo —considerada incluso la ciudad más segura del país—, en Ciudad Juárez, en la otra ribera del Río Bravo, el Estado perdió casi todo el terreno frente a los cárteles de droga, quienes controlan la ciudad con muertes y violencia.

No hay en España una ciudad más francesa que San Sebastián. Ubicada justamente en la frontera, este elegante puerto y balneario vasco reúne características de los dos países, mezclándose así la calidez e intensidad ibérica con la distinción y la fineza gala. Un ejemplo: junto a París es la única ciudad del mundo que tiene tres restoranes con tres estrellas Michelin, siendo la española una urbe 10 veces más pequeña. Junto a su vecina Bayona, al otro lado de la frontera, forman una eurociudad completamente conurbada y, por supuesto, absolutamente vasca.

San Sebastian is the most French-looking city in whole Spain. Located exactly on the border, this Basque elegant port and beach has features from both countries; therefore its Iberian warmth and intensity and its Gallic distinction and delicacy. For instance, along with Paris, San Sebastian is the only city in the world that has three restaurants with three Michelin Stars, being the Spanish one a 10 times smaller metropolis. Along with Bayonne, across the border, they set up a completely metropolitan euro-city and, of course, an absolutely Basque one.

When Caesar Augustus, the first Roman emperor, lost the Teutoburg battle, he decided the northern border of Rome would be the Rhine, and nobody would cross it. Since then, the river has worked as a natural boundary within Europe, and Basel, its southernmost port, is an example of its obliquity. In German, the region is known as Dreiländereck; in French, as District des trois frontières, and it means the same for everyone: the triple border. It is Switzerland’s northern door, and rotating only 45 degrees, you can see Germany and France, separated by just a few steps.

It is possible to get used to poverty and its landscapes, as well as to wealth due to development. But there will be no peace if there is an explicit contrast between both extremes. This is what happens on the most famous border crossing between the United States and Mexico: El Paso/Juarez. As the American side lives within a quiet university atmosphere –even considered the safest city in the country-, in Ciudad Juarez, across Río Bravo, the government lost almost all of its territory to drug cartels, who control the city with violence and death.

Hubo un día en que Detroit era tan prestigiosa y fascinante, que era conocida como la París del Oeste. En la frontera con Canadá, la ciudad acogió a la industria automotriz, y después de la II Guerra creció tanto que se transformó en el motor del país más grande del mundo. Pero el mercado no tiene memoria, y cuando se encareció la mano de obra y arremetió la competencia extranjera, las fábricas cerraron, los empresarios se fueron y el crimen aumentó. Hoy sólo un puente la separa de Windsor, la ciudad con mayor proyección y con menor tasa de homicidios de Canadá.

There was a time when Detroit was so prestigious and fascinating that it was known as the western Paris. In the Canadian border, the city welcomed the automotive industry and, after the Second World War, it developed so much it became the engine of the world’s biggest country. But the market has no memory, and when workforce got more expensive while foreign competition lashed out, factories closed, businessmen left, and crime increased. Today, only a bridge separates it from Windsor, the Canadian city with a great future ahead and the lowest homicide rate.

Una franja de cuatro kilómetros de ancho, llena de edificios desocupados y militares muy quietos, atraviesa la península de Corea de este a oeste. En la Zona Desmilitarizada de Corea (ZDC), justo en la frontera que dividió en dos a este país en 1953, la actividad militar no está permitida, pero los soldados están listos esperando la guerra. A media hora en automóvil está Seúl, una ciudad robusta y moderna, con poco crimen y desempleo y 25 millones de saludables habitantes; pero con la fragilidad de tener misiles nucleares apuntándola desde el norte día y noche.

A 2.5-mile wide strip, full of empty buildings and very still soldiers, crosses the Korean Peninsula from east to west. In the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), right in the border which divided the country in two in 1953, military activity is forbidden, but the soldiers are waiting ready for the war. Half an hour by car is Seoul, a robust and modern city, with little crime and unemployment and a healthy population of 25 million people, but with the drawback of having nuclear missiles pointing at it day and night from the north.

Después de Miami y Hong Kong, Ciudad del Este es la mayor zona de libre comercio del mundo. En el extremo oriental de Paraguay, y quizás por estar a sólo un puente de Brasil y a otro de Argentina, la capital de Alto Paraná es un mercado abierto donde todo es comprar y vender. Para los amantes del shopping, éste es el paraíso en la tierra: las marcas más lujosas a los precios más bajos, aunque su procedencia sea sospechosa y desconocida. “Mejor no saber”, deben pensar los miles de turistas que salen con las maletas llenas y un radiante y nuevo Rolex en la muñeca.

After Miami and Hong Kong, Ciudad del Este is the biggest free trade area of the world. At Paraguay’s eastern end, and maybe because of being just a bridge away from Brazil and another one from Argentina, the capital of Alto Parana is an open market where everything revolves around buying and selling. For those who love shopping, this is the earthly paradise: the most luxurious brands at the lowest prices, although its source may be suspicious and unknown. “Better not ask,” must be what thousands of tourists think when they leave with their suitcases full and a new Rolex on their wrist. 11

La Nationale straat o calle Nacional, en la histórica ciudad de Amberes, es el epicentro de la moda flamenca, inserta a su vez en uno de los sectores más prominentes de Europa en este aspecto. Con el Museo de la Moda (MoMu) y el renovado departamento de moda en la Escuela Real de Arte, ubicada en la calle Nacional, Amberes es una ciudad que emite vibraciones de moda en cada esquina.

The Nationale straat or National Street, in the historical city of Antwerp, is the epicenter of the flamenco fashion, also inserted within one of the most prominent areas of Europe in this matter. With the Fashion Museum (MoMu) and the restored fashion department in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, located in the National Street, Antwerp is a city that emits fashion vibrations in every corner.

Los diseñadores belgas más destacados, como Ann Demeulemeester, Dries van Noten, Walter Van Beirendonck, Martin Margiela, y Raf Simons, que exhiben sus colecciones en importantes pasarelas alrededor del mundo, tienen todos sus tiendas en esta calle. Every one of the most famous Belgian designers, such as Ann Demeulemeester, Dries van Noten, Walter Van Beirendonck, Martin Margiela, and Raf Simons, who exhibit their work in important catwalks around the world, has a store in this street. It is also very likely to find here several fashion students, creating inimitable pieces. This street leads the way on creating new trends and it is an inspiration for all fashion fans, although for curious tourists as well.

Lisboa es una ciudad de contrastes. Puede ser elegante y rupturista, glamorosa y alternativa. Tiene tradición y, a la vez, las últimas tendencias. La llamada “Ciudad de las siete colinas”, acoge al barrio de Chiado, la zona de compras más conocida. El lugar rebosa historia en sus edificios, cafés y librerías antiguas, pero su historia no puede contarse sin mencionar el fuego que, en 1988, destruyó varias construcciones, especialmente los “Armazéns do Chiado” (unos famosos almacenes comerciales). Pero con la visión del arquitecto portugués Álvaro Siza Vieira, entre otros intelectuales, la zona recuperó su gloria pasada.

Lisbon is a city of contrasts. It can be elegant and groundbreaking, glamorous and alternative. It has tradition and, at the same time, the last trends. The so called “City of Seven Hills” takes in the neighborhood of Chiado, the best area to go shopping. The place exudes antiquity in its buildings, cafes, and antique bookstores, but its history cannot be told without mentioning the fire that, in 1988, destroyed several constructions, especially the “Armazéns do Chiado” (famous department stores.) But with the ideas of several intellectuals, especially the ones of the Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, this place recovered its past glory.

Gracias a ese proyecto se restauraron muchos de los edificios y se preservó el estilo de las fachadas. La elegante Rua Garrett todavía conserva gran parte de su arquitectura original y el encanto del siglo 19, albergando las boutiques más elegantes en cada esquina. Lo mejor es tomarse una tarde entera para explorar los tesoros ocultos de Chiado, y perder la noción del tiempo descubriendo todo lo que tiene que ofrecer – desde alto diseño y moda hasta acogedores cafés de escritores y librerías.

Thanks to that project, many buildings were restored and the style of the facades was preserved. The stylish Rua Garrett still has great part of its original architecture, the charm of the nineteenth century, and the most elegant boutiques in every corner. The best thing to do is to spend a whole afternoon exploring Chiado’s hidden treasures and lose track of time while discovering everything it has to offer –from high fashion and design to warm writers’ cafes and bookstores.

Pero la inspiración a la hora de darle un uso a sus tradiciones se encuentra en el mundo moderno, ya que crean objetos en perfecta armonía entre el pasado y el presente.

In the narrow streets of the old city of Veliko Tarnovo, artisans still practice the old custom of bartering. And blacksmiths, potters, and jewelers still work using past times techniques. Nevertheless, when it comes to use their traditions, the inspiration takes place in the modern world, because they create objects in perfect harmony between the past and present.

Situada al norte de Bulgaria, muy pocos turistas descubren esta ciudad, pero aquellos que lo hacen efectivamente se encuentran con un pedazo de historia. Los edificios, que albergan librerías, galerías de arte y anticuarios transportan a los visitantes al pasado. Las casas datan del Resurgimiento Nacional Búlgaro, durante el dominio otomano. También conocido como el Renacimiento Búlgaro, el periodo duró casi 500 años, finalizando con la Liberación de Bulgaria en el siglo XIX. Located north of Bulgaria, only a few tourists discover this city, but those who do it find a piece of history in deed. The buildings, which have bookstores, art galleries, and antique shops, make visitors travel to the past. Houses date from the Bulgarian National Revival, during the Ottoman rule. Also known as the Bulgarian Renaissance, the period lasted almost 500 years, ending with the Liberation of Bulgaria in the nineteenth century. The invitation here is to explore the cobbled streets, the artisan products, and a rich cultural heritage.

Usually, this part of the city hosts cultural and sport events, such as museum nights, marathons, jazz concerts, and a wide variety of fairs. The most important one is Schueberfouer, an annual fair founded by John the Blind, King of Bohemia and Count of Luxembourg, around the year 1340. Located at the park of Glacis, in Limpertsberg, between August and September, the event includes more than 50 food stalls, but is best known for its iconic attractions such as the Wheel of Fortune and roller coasters. Unique clothes, toys, furniture, ornaments, pottery, and recyclable objects can be found in great amounts within the Hungarian market of WAMP. Once a month, at the Millenáris Park, in Budapest, the Sunday market is an opportunity for young designers to show their work for the first time.

Réka Matheidesz fue una de las fundadoras de WAMP en 2006. Su camino profesional, inicialmente, estaba lejos del diseño y más cerca del campo de los negocios. Dispuesta a emprender nuevos desafíos, la empresaria húngara creía que WAMP era la oportunidad perfecta para que los diseñadores emergentes presentaran sus colecciones, especialmente al comienzo de sus carreras, cuando no resulta sencillo abrir sus propias tiendas. Hacer el diseño accesible para todos es el principal objetivo detrás de este proyecto, que reúne a cerca de 120 diseñadores nuevos. Se trata de un lugar donde turistas, locales y artistas pueden inspirarse. Para todo el que visite el parque Millenáris el último domingo del mes, el paseo nunca será igual al anterior.

Réka Matheidesz was one of the founders of WAMP in 2006. At the beginning, her career path was far away from designing and much closer to businesses. Ready to take on new challenges, the Hungarian businesswoman thought WAMP was the perfect opportunity for emerging designers to present their collections, especially at the beginning of their careers, when opening their own stores is not easy. Making design accessible to everyone is the main goal behind this project, which gathers around 120 new designers. It is about a place where tourists, locals, and artists can get inspired. To anyone who visits the Millenáris Park the last Sunday of the month, the tour will never be the same as the last one.

Pero su lealtad no es entre ellos, sino con los visitantes: el conocido como el “gremio de Katariina”, se basa en la idea de que los concurrentes deberían poder ser testigos del proceso que existe detrás de cada creación artesanal.

Artists located in the passage of St. Catherine, the medieval area of the capital city’s Old Quarter are united under a guild. But their loyalty is not between them, but towards the visitors: known as the “Katariina’s Union”, it is based on the idea that the attendees should be witnesses of the process behind every hand-crafting.

Paseando por las calles empedradas, los viandantes pueden observar, de primera mano, el trabajo de los artistas en sus estudios, donde se muestra una variedad de textiles, cerámicas, cuero, retales, joyería y cristal. Los edificios que se extienden a lo largo del pasaje de St. Catherine datan de los siglos XV y XVII, haciendo de puente entre el pasado y el presente. El pasaje fue restaurado y reabierto en 1995, preservando y celebrando la atmósfera medieval de Tallin.

Walking through the cobbled streets visitors can see, first hand, the work artists create within their studios, where a great variety of textiles, pottery, leather, remnants, jewelry, and crystal are shown. The buildings across the St. Catherine passage were built during the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries, joining the past and present. The passage was restored and reopened in 1995, conserving and celebrating Tallinn’s medieval atmosphere.

El barrio universitario romano por excelencia esconde una historia de marginalidad, luchas sociales y contracultura. The quintessential Roman university neighborhood conceals a history of marginalization, social struggles and counterculture.

In 1935, the installation in San Lorenzo of the Università La Sapienza gave its definite character to this troubled area, making it an academic and artistic neighborhood. This shaping gave San Lorenzo an anarchic, revolutionary and union-organized profile, getting known as the rosso (“red”) neighborhood of Rome where Mussolini’s fascism found more resistance. For this reason, it was only logic that the Nazi occupation showed no mercy with San Lorenzo, relentlessly bombarding it in 1943. That action resulted on more than three thousand casualties and buildings that remain in ruins as silent witnesses of the war until today.

Esta configuración social dio a San Lorenzo un perfil anárquico, revolucionario y de organización sindical, siendo considerado el barrio rosso (“rojo”) de Roma y en donde el fascismo de Mussolini encontró mayor resistencia. Por lo mismo, se entiende que la ocupación nazi se ensañara con San Lorenzo, bombardeándolo implacablemente en 1943. El resultado de eso fueron más de tres mil muertos y edificios que hasta hoy permanecen en ruinas como mudos testigos de la guerra.

With this historical background, it was expected that the student riots of the 70s were led from this neighborhood. In addition, important representatives of Italian counterculture, such as the filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini, worked and lived in San Lorenzo. The Pommidoro restaurant, a classic of the local cuisine and fully operational until today, was the favorite place of the author of the controversial film Saló. The taste of a pappardelle –a fettuccini-like pasta, but wider- accompanied with wild boar or pig porchetta –a ham sandwich with roasted spices and grilled in its own skin-, gave birth to some of his most important creations. Some of them are still exhibited in Nuovo Cinema Palazzo, an old movie theater that still stands thanks to the organization of the neighbors who gathered signatures and promoted a cultural center, preventing the installation of an arcade. And what started as the recovery of a place to watch movies became a community movement, which today promotes San Lorenzo’s identity through the dissemination of its history and its art.

Con estos antecedentes históricos, era de esperar que las revueltas estudiantiles de los años 70 fueran encabezadas desde este barrio. Además, importantes representantes de la contracultura italiana, como el cineasta Pier Paolo Pasolini, hicieron de este barrio su lugar de creación y residencia. El restorán Pommidoro, un clásico de la gastronomía sanlorenzina y en pleno funcionamiento hasta hoy, era el predilecto del autor de la controversial película Saló. Al sabor de unas papardelle –pasta tipo fetuccini pero más ancha- acompañadas con carne de jabalí o de porchetta –sándwich de cerdo con especias y asado a las brasas en su propia piel-, dio vida a algunas de sus más importantes filmes.

Algunos de ellos aún se exhiben en Nuovo Cinema Palazzo, una antigua sala de cine que sigue en pie gracias a la organización de los vecinos que recolectaron firmas e impulsaron un centro cultural, evitando la instalación de una sala de juegos. Y lo que partió como la recuperación de un lugar para ver películas se transformó en un movimiento comunitario, que hoy promueve la identidad de San Lorenzo a través de la difusión de su historia y su arte. Una opción al cine son las actividades que se organizan en Villa Mercede, centenario predio agrícola transformado en biblioteca y que ostenta una iglesia de estilo gótico. Otro hito característico de San Lorenzo es el mercado al aire libre de Via dei Volsci, que en su mayoría ofrece ropa nueva y artículos importados. Sin embargo, afinando el ojo, aún se pueden encontrar muebles antiguos, ropa vintage o rarezas literarias. Al final de la feria, coronando el barrio, se erige el monumental cementerio de Verano y la iglesia de San Lorenzo, de estilo románico y que custodia los restos del santo.

Si bien la marginalidad ya no es característica de San Lorenzo, hoy el barrio es una moneda con dos caras: durante el día es una zona residencial y los ancianos asisten a la parroquia; de noche, en cambio, los estudiantes se vuelcan a las calles con cervezas y copas de vino en mano y los músicos callejeros animan las esquinas mientras los niños corren detrás de una pelota. El visitante está en Roma, es verdad, pero al ritmo de la República Independiente de San Lorenzo.

An option to watching movies is the activities that take place in Villa Mercede, a centenary farming land transformed into a library which also has a Gothic church. Another one of San Lorenzo’s milestone is the outdoor market in Via dei Volsci, which mostly offers new clothes and imported items. However, paying a little bit more attention you can still find antique furniture, vintage clothing and literary oddities. At the end of the market, crowning the neighborhood stands the monumental Verano cemetery and the Romanesque-style church of San Lorenzo, which houses the remains of the saint. Although marginalization is no longer a feature of this area, two sides of the same token coexist nowadays: during the day, San Lorenzo is a residential neighborhood where elders attend the parish; but at night, students turn to the streets holding beers and glasses of wine, and buskers enliven every corner while kids run around after a ball. The visitor is in Rome, that is true, but to the pace of the Independent Republic of San Lorenzo.

Al sol, unas escolares en la plaza de Valdivia esperaban que la tarde avanzara. Sentadas, se reían despacio y conversaban sin mirarse, como esperando que algo llegara y las sorprendiera y las sacara de ese banco —y de esa plaza, de esa ciudad. Había una calma generalizada, que llegaba incluso a perturbar. Mucho silencio y un movimiento lento, apenas apurado por el frío. Era, a lo mejor, la calma que precede a cualquier tormenta, a cualquier incendio.

Lying in the sun, some schoolgirls in Valdivia’s main square were just watching time go by. Sitting around, they just laughed and talked slowly without looking each other, and waiting for something to come and surprise them and take them out of that bench –and that square, and that city. There was a generalized, even disturbing quiet. A lot of silence and a slow pace, barely rushed by a cold breeze. It was, perhaps, the calm before any storm, any fire.

O quizá no. Valdivia ha sido la ciudad que más veces se ha reconstruido en Chile: en 1909, su centro fue destruido por un incendio; y en 1960, el terremoto más intenso que haya registrado la humanidad tuvo su epicentro apenas unos kilómetros al norte. Justo el 2012, en la víspera del Festival Internacional de Cine de Valdivia, que desde 1994 se celebra cada octubre en la ciudad, un incendio destruyó una cuadra de locales comerciales. Como acostumbrados, los calmados valdivianos saben que su condena es morir y renacer eternamente.

Or maybe not. Valdivia is the Chilean city that has been rebuilt the most times: in 1909, downtown was destroyed by a fire, and in 1960, the most intense earthquake ever recorded by humanity started just a few miles north. On 2012, on the eve of the International Film Festival of Valdivia, which is held yearly in the city since 1994, a fire destroyed a block of stores. As usual, the calm locals knew that their sentence is to die and come back eternally.

Esas escolares, tranquilas justo en el día de la inauguración del festival, sabían que éste es un hito que altera la continua pasividad de su ciudad-pueblo. Sus bosques y ríos, su cerveza y sus crudos están ahí todo el año, pero con la excusa del cine es que Valdivia se llena y revive cada primavera.

Those schoolgirls, quiet right in the opening day of the festival, knew that the event is a milestone that alters the continued passivity of their town-like city. Its forests and rivers, its beer and its steak tartar are there all year round, but it is with the movies that Valdivia gets crowded and revives every spring.

Río de Janeiro es un espectáculo constante. Ahí todo es alegría y belleza; desde los cariocas que parten el día haciendo deporte en la playa, hasta los pequeños secretos que guardan sus calles y que deslumbran a los turistas que los descubren. Arpoador es uno de ellos. Rio de Janeiro is a nonstop show. Everything is about joy and beauty; from the locals who start their day training at the beach, to those little secrets its streets keep, dazzling tourists when discovered. Arpoador is one of them. Pasadas las 17:00 horas, el calor húmedo de Río amaina, pero la playa sigue llena de gente. A pasos del moderno y lujoso hotel Fasano –diseñado por el reconocido arquitecto y diseñador francés Phillipe Starck-, y a sólo metros del parque Garota de Ipanema, justo donde termina esa playa, está uno de los lugares más cotizados de la “cidade maravilhosa”, como popularmente se conoce a Río de Janeiro. A esa hora, cuando el sol se prepara para esconderse, varios turistas y algunos locales se alistan para disfrutar de unos minutos de belleza absoluta. Arpoador es el límite de Ipanema con Copacabana, pero caminar de una playa a otra resulta imposible por el fuerte que las separa. Es una esquina con una gran piedra, la Pedra do Arpoador, a la que se puede llegar caminando por la arena o los inconfundibles adoquines del malecón carioca, en bicicleta o cruzando el parque Garota de Ipanema. Famoso por sus buenas olas, Arpoador es el lugar favorito de los surfistas, que llenan el lugar con sus tablas y piruetas. After 5 pm, Rio’s wet heat eases off, but the beach is still full with people. Just a few steps from the luxurious and modern Fasano hotel –designed by the famous French architect and designer Phillipe Starck- and just a few feet from Garota de Ipanema Park, right where the namesake beach ends, is one of the most valued places of the “cidade maravilhosa,” as Rio de Janeiro is commonly known. At that time, when the sun gets ready to set, several tourists and some locals prepare to enjoy a few minutes of absolute beauty. Arpoador is the limit between Ipanema and Copacabana, but walking from one beach to the other is impossible due to the fort that separates them. It is a corner with a huge rock, Pedra do Arpoador, which can be reached by walking through the sand or the unmistakable cobbles of Rio’s esplanade; by bike or across Garota de Ipanema Park. Arpoador, famous for its great waves, is the surfers’ favorite spot, filling the beach with their boards and somersaults.

En los minutos previos al atardecer, se puede ir a comprar a los puestos que bordean el malecón algo para beber y pasar el calor, disfrutar por $ 3 reales de un rico “milho verde” -la versión brasilera del choclo con mantequilla- o respirar la brisa marina y disfrutar del paisaje. Cuando el reloj marca las 17:30, todos los presentes se maravillan con la breve escena: el cielo se vuelve multicolor y el sol se esconde de a poco tras el cerro Dois Irmaos. Se escuchan los clicks de las cámaras fotográficas y el “¡wow!” en distintos idiomas de los presentes. En los días sin nubosidad, los atardeceres vistos desde Arpoador sacan aplausos de todos los que disfrutan este espectáculo natural. Son sólo unos minutos que logran asombrar a los turistas e incluso a los cariocas, que parecen no acostumbrarse a la belleza de estos atardeceres. Por lo mismo, es un panorama imperdible cada vez que se visite Rio de Janeiro. It is also very common to see fishing enthusiasts waiting patiently for something to bait. But Pedra do Arpoador is more than just waves and marine fauna: it is also the best place to watch and enjoy a movie-like sunset. That is why, around 5:15 pm, the place gets crowded by people searching for the best spot to simply sit down and wait. There are amazing landscapes everywhere: miles of fine white sand, the Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) appearing among the colorful houses in the hills and looking at the city from its highest spot and, of course, facing east, the stunning Dois Irmaos hill, one of the biggest stars of Rio’s sunsets. También es muy común ver aficionados a la pesca, que esperan pacientemente que algo pique su anzuelo. Pero más que por sus olas o su fauna marina, la Pedra do Arpoador es conocida por ser el mejor lugar para ver y disfrutar un atardecer de película. Es por eso que, cerca de las 17:15, el lugar se llena de gente buscando el mejor espacio en este roquerío, para simplemente sentarse a esperar. Por todos lados hay postales imperdibles: kilómetros de playa con arena blanca y fina, el Cristo Redentor que se asoma entre las coloridas casas de los cerros y mira a la ciudad desde el punto más alto de ésta y, por supuesto, mirando hacia el este, el imponente cerro Dois Irmaos, uno de los grandes protagonistas de los atardeceres cariocas.

Right before sunset, you can get something to drink and beat the heat on the stalls that border the esplanade, eat a nice “milho verde” –the Brazilian version of corncob and butter- for just $3 reales or breath the ocean air and be delighted by the landscape. When the clock strikes 5:30 pm, everyone marvels at the brief scene: the sky becomes multicolored and the sun slowly sets behind the Dois Irmaos hill. You can hear the cameras’ clicks everywhere and the many “wows!” in different languages. During cloudless days, the sunsets seen from Arpoador are applauded by everyone enjoying this natural show. Even though it only lasts a few minutes, it amazes both tourists and locals, who seem to not get used to the beauty of these sunsets. That is why this is a must on every visit to Rio de Janeiro.

No sería raro si estuviera en una feria o un mercado, pero son las dos de la mañana y está en medio de un bar enorme, donde todos beben y bailan desaforadamente. Nadie parece sorprenderse demasiado, pues las cosas extrañas son las más normales en el .

El bar Szimpla Kert —“Jardín Simple” en castellano— es eso: un lugar para divertirse sin mayores pretensiones. Al menos ésa fue la idea original cuando, hace 12 años, su propietario se instaló en el primer piso de un enorme edificio abandonado, que estaba a punto de ser demolido. Sin más decoración que un par de muebles antiguos, el sitio se trasformó en el lugar de moda para los jóvenes alternativos de Budapest, la capital de Hungría. El concepto se fue replicando poco a poco por el centro de la ciudad, sobre todo en el Distrito VII y en el antiguo gueto judío: dos barrios que estaban destinados a ser destruidos o restaurados, pero que esta nueva bohemia consiguió resucitar.

“Do you want a carrot?” The offer is made by a young vegan woman, who walks calmly with a basket among the crowd. The scene would not be weird if you were in a fair or a market, but it is two in the morning and she is in the midst of a huge bar where everyone drinks and dance wildly. But no one seems to be surprised by her, because strange things are normal at Szimpla Kert. The Szimpla Kert bar –”Simple Garden” in English- is just that: a place for unpretentious fun. At least that was the original idea when the owner opened it 12 years ago, on the first floor of a huge abandoned building that was about to be demolished. With no more decoration than a couple of antique furniture, the place was transformed into a hotspot for young alternative Budapest, capital of Hungary. The concept started replicating gradually downtown, especially in the District VII and the former Jewish ghetto; two neighborhoods that were destined to be destroyed or restored. But, thanks to this new bohemia, they got resurrected.

Este nuevo despertar de Budapest llevó a que los barrios más olvidados de la capital estuvieran plagados de nuevos antros culturales. Bares —que también son galerías de arte, cines y discotecas— aparecieron como magníficos hongos entre los escombros, para terminar de darle a la ciudad una identidad propia. El nombre en común surgió fácilmente: los bares ruina.

Nostalgia kitsch

Su esencia está marcada también por una decoración similar. Su estilo es retro, y en su mayoría usan muebles encontrados en la basura, aparatos electrónicos en desuso o carrocerías de autos abandonados. La gracia es que todos se parecen, pero ninguno es igual a otro. El pionero fue Szimpla Kert. Es el bar ruina más cosmopolita, y por su excéntrica decoración está lleno de curiosos a cualquier hora. “¿Me puedes tomar una foto sobre el auto?”, pide emocionada una joven japonesa que no deja de dispararle a cada rincón del lugar, sobre todo al chasis del clásico auto de Alemania del Este, el Trabant, que ubicado en medio del jardín es el símbolo del lugar. En los otros salones se pueden encontrar un jugador profesional de póker de Chicago, una modelo rusa y un grupo de amigas mexicanas, todos encantados fumando narguile, una pipa de agua que se ha vuelto muy popular en Europa.

En el salón electrónico, hay una pared cubierta de viejos monitores de computador con sus circuitos a la vista, donde pasan imágenes psicodélicas que se pueden cambiar desde un panel. Ahí también se activan otros trucos: luces que se prenden y apagan, conejitos de peluche que cobran vida y hacen ruidos extraños, y mangueras fluorescentes que iluminan la oscura habitación.

Actualmente, casi cuatro millones de personas visitan Budapest cada año, lo que la transforma en el destino más popular de Europa del Este. Y aunque con ese nivel de turismo parece difícil mantener un secreto, los bares ruina han sabido esconderse. Es el caso del Fogas Ház, donde la única señal para entrar es el guardia apoyado en lo que parece la entrada a un galpón. Eso y el olor a pizza recién hecha que sale por una ventana. Al abrirse las puertas, la música, que en la calle no se escucha, llega fuerte y de golpe, y adentro el espacio es un enorme laberinto: una pista de baile junto a un living, escaleras, dos barras, un patio interior con árboles y mesas iluminadas con velas. Más allá, un área con viejos flippers y también la pequeña pizzería, que con su aroma atrae a los hambrientos hasta las seis de la mañana.

Entrepreneurs rented basements and roofs of old buildings to the town hall for little money, which were in permanent decline since the end of communism in Hungary, 24 years ago. These gray, huge, uninhabited buildings were the last vestige of the regime that the country experienced between 1949 and 1989, and the facades, still with traces of bullets and guns, the unmistakable symbol of a city marked by wars and revolutions. This new awakening of Budapest led the forgotten neighborhoods of the capital to be full of new cultural clubs. Bars –which are also art galleries, theaters and nightclubs- multiplied between the rubble, completing the city’s own identity. Their common name came up easily: “ruin bars”.

Kitsch nostalgia

Szimpla Kert was the pioneer. It is the most cosmopolitan ruin bar, and because of its eccentric decor is full of curious visitors at any time. “Can you take my picture on the car?,” asks excitedly a young Japanese woman while shooting every corner of the place, especially the chassis of the classic car of East Germany, the Trabant , which is in the middle of the garden and is the symbol of the place. In the other rooms you can find a professional poker player from Chicago, a Russian model and a group of Mexican friends, all of them happily smoking hookah, a water pipe that has become very popular in Europe.

Their essence is also marked by a similar decoration. It is a clear retro style, created mostly using furniture found in the trash, obsolete electronics or abandoned car’s parts. Their charm is that, although they all look alike, not two of them look the same.

Currently, nearly four million people visit Budapest every year, which transforms it into the most popular destination in Eastern Europe. And even if that number of tourists can make it difficult to keep a secret, the ruin bars have learned how to hide well. That is the case of Fogas Ház, where the only signal showing the entrance is the guard resting in what it looks like the entrance to a storehouse. That, and the smell of fresh pizza coming out of a window. When the doors open, the loud music –which can’t be heard on the street- suddenly appears, and the place becomes a huge maze inside: a dance floor next to a living room, stairs, two bars, an indoor courtyard with trees and candlelit tables. A little further there is an area with old flippers and the small pizzeria, whose aroma attracts the hungry until six AM.

In the electronic room, there is a wall covered with old computer monitors with visible circuits, where they play psychedelic images that can be changed from a control panel. From there, many other tricks get activated: lights that go on and off, stuffed bunnies that come to life and make strange noises, and fluorescent hoses illuminating the darkened room.

Otra de las características básicas de un bar ruina es su versatilidad. Si en la noche es habitual bailar al ritmo del dj de moda o escuchar a una banda emergente, en el día ese mismo lugar puede alojar una exposición fotográfica, una retrospectiva de cine o una venta de garaje. Por ejemplo, todos los domingos por la mañana el Szimpla Kert es sede de una feria gourmet donde se puede comer por pocos florines. Además, todas las noches se ofrecen originales números de varieté que se realizan en el pequeño escenario al fondo del jardín, aislado de la música que proviene de los otros ambientes.

Another basic feature of any ruin bar is its versatility. While it is usual to dance to the music of the most popular dj or listen to a rising band by night, the same place can host a photo exhibition, a retrospective film exhibition or a garage sale during the day. Szimpla Kert, for example, hosts a gourmet fair every Sunday morning, where you can eat for a just few forints. In addition, original vaudeville numbers are performed every night on the small stage at the back of the garden, isolated from the music that comes from the other rooms.

La aparición de las artistas es tan repentina como su salida. En un apagar de luces, el grupo se ha ido y la gente se dispersa para volver a la fiesta. Todo pasa demasiado rápido y muchos quedan con gusto a poco, pero eso es parte de la esencia de los bares ruinas: desaparecer de un momento a otro.

On Friday and Saturday nights, people party hard in every ruin bar. It is easy to find, for example, a neo-Arab atmosphere, full of belly dancers moving to a tribal- bellydance rhythm, which is a fusion of belly dancing with urban dance steps. The artists emerge as sudden as they leave: as the lights go off, the group is gone and people scatter around to return to the party. Everything happens way too fast and many are left wanting a longer show, but that is part of the ruin bars’ essence: to disappear overnight.

Es probable que alguien vuelva el próximo año a la misma calle y al mismo número y el bar ya no esté ahí. Lo común es que un bar ruina tenga un pequeño tiempo de esplendor y luego se transforme en escombros. Pero ahí radica su gracia, porque pueden regenerarse con facilidad en otro edificio moribundo. Quien quiera volver a bailar sobre ruinas, sólo necesitará paciencia para volver a encontrarlo.

That is why is most likely to return a year later to the same street and the exact same address, and not finding the bar where it was before. Usually, a ruin bar has a short time of splendor, and is transformed into rubble afterwards. But therein lays their charm, because they can easily regenerate in another wrecked building. Whoever wants to dance again among its ruins only needs patience to find it again.

Contulmo y Capitán Pastene, dos pueblos enclavados en la cordillera de Nahuelbuta, comparten un origen de inmigración, esfuerzo y gastronomía que invita a perderse en su historia y sus platos. Contulmo and Capitán Pastene, two villages nestled in the hills of the Nahuelbuta mountain range, share an immigration, effort and gastronomy background that invites tourists to get lost in their history and their dishes. ontulmo, que significa “lugar de paso” en mapudungun, está a medio camino entre Cañete y Purén, dos antiguos fuertes españoles. Lo rodean cerros poblados con nalcas y araucarias, y se encuentra justo a orillas del lago Lanalhue. Durante los últimos años, adquirió cierta fama cuando cientos de cisnes de cuello negro, huyendo de la contaminada Valdivia, llegaron hasta acá en busca del luchecillo, su principal alimento. Construida por Pablo Kortwich —colono y primer alcalde de Contulmo—, la casona luego fue convertida en restorán por el chef Juan Carlos Benítez, quien ahora ofrece abundantes platos típicos de la zona. Si bien su especialidad son las carnes y pescados frescos, sus deliciosas conservas caseras, que incluyen infinitas variedades, son la mejor inversión que se puede hacer en el pueblo. El padre del dueño es, además, un reconocido poeta contulmano que deleita al comensal con vinos de la zona y tradicionales historias del pueblo.

Contulmo, meaning “place of transit” in Mapudungun, is halfway between Cañete and Purén, two old Spanish forts. It is surrounded by hills covered with nalcas and araucarias, and is located right in front of the Lake Lanalhue. In recent years, it gained some fame when hundreds of black-necked swans, fleeing the contaminated Valdivia, came here in search of a specific kind of seaweed, the luchecillo, their main food.

But swans were not the first ones to arrive, since Contulmo’s history is full of immigration. The main one occurred in 1884, when 48 German families came to this valley –the same one that stated the frontier between Spanish and Mapuche people- centuries ago. The German influence can be seen, at first sight, in the styles of the red patrimonial houses that are scattered through the quiet streets. A clear example is in front of the main square, the Plaza de Armas, where the restored Casa Kortwich can be found.

El molino Grolmus, a tres kilómetros de la plaza, es otra huella alemana en la zona: esta reliquia de finales del siglo XIX, hecha completamente de madera y ensamblada sin un clavo en su estructura, se encuentra aún en pleno funcionamiento. Sinónimo de “todo tiempo pasado fue mejor”, cuando se corta la luz el molino da electricidad a Contulmo. Hasta hace pocos años aún era posible conversar con la última Grolmus viva, que narraba al turista la historia de la llegada de su familia y las dificultades para comenzar una vida desde cero. Cuidaba con esmero tanto el molino como el jardín que lo rodea, en el cual se podían apreciar, por esos años, distintos tipos de rosas y unos particulares copihues negros. De ese jardín ya nadie se ocupa, pero es posible visitar el molino y el trabajo que ahí se realiza. Antes de dejar Contulmo, justo a la salida, una buena opción es cargar energía en la cafetería de la bencinera Apex: su amplia oferta de küchenes, pasteles, dulces y strudels funcionan como el mejor souvenir de despedida.

Del merquén al ravioli En 1904 y 1905, impulsadas por las precariedades que vivía Europa y promovidas por el gobierno chileno, 88 familias italianas se instalaron en la Colonia Nueva Italia, a 10 kilómetros de Lumaco. Posteriormente, en homenaje al marino genovés Juan Bautista Pastene, quien exploró en el siglo XVI la costa del sur de Chile, decidieron cambiarle el nombre por el de Capitán Pastene. En el corazón de la zona forestal de la Araucanía, este pueblo es un oasis de bosque nativo en medio de kilómetros de pinos y eucaliptos. Es, asimismo, un ejemplo de la fusión gastronómica de los mejores elementos de dos culturas. Por eso a Capitán Pastene, en primer término, se va a comer bien.

The Grolmus mill, three kilometers from the square, is another German remnant in the area: this relic of the late nineteenth century, made entirely of wood and assembled without a nail in its structure, is still in full operation. Remembering that the past was a better time, when the power goes out, the mill gives electricity to Contulmo.

PABLO GARVARINO

Built by Pablo Kortwich –settler and first mayor of Contulmo-, the house was later converted into a restaurant by Chef Juan Carlos Benítez, who now offers hearty and local dishes. While his specialties are fresh fish and meat, his delicious homemade and infinite varieties of canned food are the best investment you can make while visiting this town. The owner’s father is also a renowned local poet, who delights diners with local wines and traditional stories of Contulmo.

Before leaving Contulmo, right on its exit, it is recommended to recharge energy in the cafeteria of the Apex gas station: its wide range of küchenes, pies, sweets and strudels work as the best farewell souvenir.

From merquén to ravioli

At the heart of the forest area of the Araucanía, this village is an oasis of native forest in the middle of miles of pine and eucalyptus. It is also an example of culinary fusion of the best elements of both Chilean and Italian cultures. That is why whoever visits Capitán Pastene goes there, first of all, to eat well.

The restaurant L’Emiliano, a pioneer in the area, is a classic: its range of fresh pasta and traditional Italian preparations has earned a place among foodies who go visit the VIII region.

On 1904 and 1905, driven by the precarious conditions that Europe was going through –and promoted by the Chilean government-, 88 Italian families settled in the Colonia Nueva Italia (New Italy Colony), 10 kilometers from Lumaco. Later, in tribute to the Genoese sailor Juan Bautista Pastene, who explored the coast of southern Chile in the sixteenth century, it was decided to change the colony’s name to Capitán Pastene.

Until few years ago it was still possible to talk with the last of the Grolmus alive, who narrated to the tourists the story of her family’s arrival and the difficulties starting their life from scratch. She took care of both the mill and the surrounding garden, in which could be seen, in those years, different types of roses and some peculiar black copihues. Nowadays, no one worries about the garden, but you can visit the mill and see the work that is done there.

Although it is not the only one, since the ristorante Anita Covili gets the attention of many visitors with its blend of peninsular recipes with typical products of the area.

IÑAKI IRISARRI

Due to its high demand, it is best to book a table in advance, so you can calmly enjoy a homemade prosciutto antipasto, some copa – Italian salami- and changles, or pickle gargales, which are tender mushrooms that grow at the foot of the oaks. To continue, the ravioli stuffed with pork and mango, served with hazelnut sauce, are the perfect excuse to uncork some Traiguén wine. For dessert, you can opt for the chocolate and plum ravioli, or the tiramisu made in front of the guests. The idea here is to enjoy the benefits of natural produce and homemade food.

After lunch, in what was the Rosati mill there is a recently installed cafe which offers an authentic espresso made straight from coffee beans, along with a piece of blueberry cake. Right across the street, the boutique hotel Pietra Santa has exclusive rooms and a restaurant that rises to the occasion. In the Museum of Ham, steps from the central square, you can see the production process of the typical Italian prosciutto. And one block away, the town’s cinema projects the filming of the first settlers’ arrival. Para continuar, los ravioles rellenos de cerdo y mango, acompañados con salsa de avellanas, son la excusa perfecta para descorchar algún vino de Traiguén. De postre se puede optar por los raviolones de chocolate y ciruela, o por el tiramisú elaborado a vista y paciencia de los visitantes. La consigna aquí es gozar de las bondades de los productos naturales y de la comida hecha en casa. Finalizado el almuerzo, en lo que fuera el molino Rosati se acaba de instalar una cafetería que ofrece un espresso de auténtico grano junto a un trozo de torta de arándanos. Cruzando la calle, el hotel boutique Pietra Santa tiene exclusivas habitaciones y un restorán a la altura de las circunstancias. En el Museo del Jamón, a pasos de la plaza central, se puede apreciar el proceso de producción del típico prosciutto italiano. La fauna marina, especialmente los pingüinos, es la gran protagonista, pero también lo son las costumbres inglesas fuertemente arraigadas en uno de los últimos rincones del Atlántico. This archipelago is much more than the territorial conflict between Argentine and British. The marine fauna (especially the penguins) is the great protagonist, but so are the strongly held English customs in one of the last corners of the Atlantic.

That is the key word to describe the general understanding about the Falkland Islands: only a few know how to get there, and almost no one would bet tourism is highly developed, nor that the island looks like a little England at the south of the Atlantic, where every single British custom is followed very precisely. People drive on the left side, only English is spoken, everything is paid in pounds, and breakfasts are an attack of calories with eggs, bacon, and sausages. Everything, of course, adorned with red telephone booths and the English classic mailboxes. Annually, the Malvinas –for the Argentine- or the Falklands –for the Britishreceive more than 50 thousand people, most of them in transit while traveling in cruise ships that begin their journey in Buenos Aires or Montevideo. It is way easier to get there from Chile, since LAN flies once a week to Mount Pleasant –the military base where the international airport is located- with a stop over in Punta Arenas. This compels to stay a whole week, which can be either an advantage or a disadvantage, because prices here are, same as customs, very British.

Desde el aire se puede apreciar mucho mejor la fisonomía de este archipiélago: dos grandes islas (la Soledad, al este, y la Gran Malvina, al oeste) y más de 750 islas pequeñas e islotes. Al principio impacta ver el desolado paisaje del terreno que dejaron las glaciaciones en el lugar. No hay árboles sino mucha estepa —donde pastan miles de ovejas—, más algunas zonas de turba y rocas por todos lados. En la costa, en cambio, el panorama es más contrastado. El mar impresiona por su gama de colores, que van del turquesa al azul oscuro, y lo mismo consiguen las diversas colonias de pingüinos.

Los reyes de las islas Uno de los destinos más populares e importantes en este territorio, todavía disputado por Argentina y el Reino Unido, es Volunteer Point. Este pequeño asentamiento, en la punta más oriental del archipiélago, no es dominado por criollos ni británicos, sino por los pingüinos rey, que aquí tienen la mayor colonia de las Malvinas. Es la segunda subespecie más grande después del pingüino emperador, la más hermosa por su colorido y una de las más difíciles de ver, porque vive en islas subantárticas de difícil acceso. Al igual que los emperadores, esta especie realiza un largo y difícil cortejo. En vez de anidar, se para sobre el huevo y lo protege por turnos, y tanto macho como hembra cumplen un activo rol en la etapa de nidificación y cuidado del polluelo. The kings of the islands One of the most popular and important spots within this territory, still disputed by Argentina and the United Kingdom, is Volunteer Point. This little settlement, located on the archipelago easternmost point, is not dominated neither by locals nor by British, but by King Penguins, who settled here with their biggest colony in the Falklands. It is the second biggest subspecies after the Emperor Penguin, the most beautiful due to its color and one of the most difficult ones to see, because it lives in inaccessible subantarctic islands.

Instead of nesting, it stands on the egg and protects it by taking turns, so both male and female have an active role throughout the nesting stage and hatchling care. Although they come and go to the sea in search of food, they do not stay on the beach, they gather in the grass at 1,640 feet from the tide, with their backs facing the wind. It is hard to believe that those huge, brown, ugly baby birds will someday become elegant and colorful birds of magnificent grey, orange and white tones, filling in just a matter of minutes all the tourists’ memory cards.

Nevertheless, once they are outside the water, between the sand and the wind, all those great abilities turn into clumsy and funny movements while they try to make their way. Another specie that brings all the tourists’ attention is the Rockhopper Penguin, with their rocker hairstyle and their curious way of moving, jumping from rock to rock. They are, by far, the funniest penguins in the island. One of the best places to see them is Murrel Farm (www.kidneycove. com), where a colony of 400 specimens is located. The Sea Lion islet is another paradise to see fauna. Taking a plane to the archipelago’s southernmost corner you can reach this little island, where there is an exclusive lodge (www.sealionisland.com) and hiking trails to go see sea lions; elephant seals; three species of penguins; and some orcas that often circle the islet. On holiday in Madrid and walking through the entertaining neighborhood “La Latina”, I could not resist to see a play starring the excellent actress and comedian Loles León (better known in Chile as Paloma Cuesta, in the hit series “Aquí no hay quién viva”, by Antena 3). The cast is completed by Lolita Flores, Lola’s daughter; and actresses Alicia Orozco and Fabiola Toledo.

De vacaciones en Madrid y caminando por el entretenido barrio de “La Latina”, no pude resistirme en ir a ver una obra de teatro protagonizada por la excelente actriz y comediante Loles León (más conocida en Chile como Paloma Cuesta, en la exitosa serie “Aquí no hay quién viva”, de Antena 3). El elenco lo completaban Lolita Flores, hija de Lola, y las actrices Alicia Orozco y Fabiola Toledo. Un colorido vestuario y escenografía con la estética de Agatha Ruiz de la Prada introducen al público en la temática de la menopausia. Los “sofocos”, como llaman en el país ibérico a los trastornos típicos del climaterio, dan pie en los libretos de Isabel Arranz y Maxim Huerta a escenas muy divertidas, en las cuales cuatro muy diferentes personajes dan rienda suelta a sus historias sobre cómo viven las mujeres este singular estado de madurez. El plato fuerte de la obra es la actriz Loles León, quien interpreta a Mariví, un personaje muy parecido a la desbocada Paloma de la exitosa serie española mencionada anteriormente. Le sigue Lolita Flores que, con sus arranques de sangre flamenca, regocija al público interpretando canciones y bailes característicos de su carrera. El cuadro “Ovarios Musicales” y una escena de tres personajes en el cielo completan una hora y media de una obra sin pretensiones que logra momentos muy especiales, sobre todo por las salidas de libreto de las actrices.

Colorful costumes and scenery to the aesthetics of Agatha Ruiz de la Prada introduce the audience on the subject of menopause. The sofocos or hot flashes, as the typical climacteric disorders are called in the Iberian country, give rise in the dialogues written by Isabel Arranz and Maxim Huerta to very funny scenes, in which the four different characters unleash their stories of how women live this unique state of maturity. The play’s highlight is the actress Loles León, who plays Mariví, a character very similar to the out-of-control Paloma of the Spanish hit series mentioned above. Lolita Flores follows right after her, rejoicing the audience with her Flamenco blood spurting songs and dances typical from her renowned career. The act “Ovarios Musicales” (“Musical Ovaries”) and a scene between three characters in heaven complete an hour and a half of an unpretentious play that achieves very special moments, thanks mostly to the actresses’ improvisations. If you visit Madrid, do not miss this comedy, which will be in theaters until October 30. Con un sólido crecimiento del turismo internacional en el primer semestre del 2013 como telón de fondo (+5%), la Organización Mundial del Turismo (OMT) convocó a sus miembros por segunda vez en su historia en África para su principal reunión, la Asamblea General. En 2005 el país elegido fue Senegal, y este año la 20ª versión se realizó en Cataratas Victoria, en la frontera entre Zambia y Zimbabue, entre el 24 y el 29 de agosto. “El turismo es un motor indiscutible de riqueza para los países, de ingresos para las empresas y de empleo para la población”, afirmó el Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas, Ban Ki-moon, en un mensaje especial a los participantes. Por lo mismo, recalcó enfático: “Hago un llamado a todos los Miembros de la OMT y a la comunidad turística mundial para que estudien la forma en que mejor pueden contribuir al desarrollo sostenible”.

With representatives from 120 UNWTO Member States, 50 secretaries, and 700 delegates, the meeting emphasized the magnitude of tourism as a development gear, highlighting the importance of visa facilitation, air connectivity, and accessibility. With the sound growth of international tourism during the first semester of 2013 as backdrop (+5%), the UNWTO convened its members for its main meeting, the General Assembly, for the second time in its history in Africa. Senegal was the chosen country in 2005, and this year the 20th version was held in Victoria Falls, on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, from August 24th to 29th. “Tourism is an undeniable engine of wealth for countries, of income for companies, of employment for populations,” said the United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, during a special message to the participants. Therefore, he insisted: “I appeal to all UNWTO members and to the global tourism community to analyze how they can best promote to sustainable development.”

Facilitar visados y conectar por el aire Como una nueva tradición, iniciada en la versión de 2011, la Asamblea General es precedida por una Mesa Redonda Ministerial que aborda temas de especial relevancia de la realidad y política turística mundial, marcando en gran medida el rumbo a seguir por la OMT. Este año, primó como tópico la facilitación de los visados como catalizador de los viajes. Al respecto, la OMT acogió el compromiso de los representantes de todas las regiones del mundo para agilizar la emisión de visados, y así dejen de ser una barrera al movimiento de turistas internacionales. Otro tema fundamental es la relación entre turismo y transporte aéreo. La Asamblea subrayó la necesidad de una colaboración más estrecha entre ambas áreas, insistiendo que se condicionan mutuamente. Las cifras son claras: de los más de mil millones de turistas que cruzan cada año las fronteras internacionales, más de la mitad se desplazan en avión. Por lo mismo, temas como la necesidad de hacer más cómodos los aeropuertos, los cielos abiertos y el impacto de las líneas aéreas de bajo costo, se debatieron largamente. En esa línea, la OMT ha inscrito la conectividad entre sus prioridades políticas, junto con la agilización de los visados y una fiscalidad justa.

Facilitating visas and connecting by air As a new tradition initiated in the 2011 version, the General Assembly is preceded by a Ministerial Roundtable, which addresses issues of special relevance to reality and global tourism policy, greatly tracing the route to follow by the UNWTO. This year, the main issue was the visa facilitation as a catalyst for travel. In this regard, the organization welcomed the engagement of representatives from different regions of the world in order to expedite visas issuances, so they are no longer a barrier to the movement of international tourists. Another main topic was the relationship between tourism and air transport. The Assembly highlighted the need of much closer collaboration between both areas, insisting in the fact that they are interdependent. The numbers are clear: each year, out of a billion tourists that cross internationals borders, more than half of them do so by airplane. Therefore, issues such as making the airports more comfortable, open skies, and the impact of low cost airlines, were discussed at length. In that matter, UNWTO has enrolled connectivity among its political priorities, along with visa facilitation and fair taxation.

Entre las decisiones clave tomadas en la Asamblea figuran los anfitriones del Día Mundial del Turismo (DMT) y de la Asamblea General. El protagonismo latinoamericano es prueba de la valoración positiva que la comunidad turística internacional tiene de la región.

The hosts for the next World Tourism Day (WTD) and for the General Assembly are among the key decisions made by the Assembly in its reunion. Therefore, the Latin-American leadership in these topics is proof of the positive assessment that the international touristic community has towards this region.

La celebración del DMT de 2014, celebrado cada 27 de septiembre –fecha de la aprobación de los estatutos originales de la OMT-, será en México. Ahí se enfatizará la importancia del turismo para el desarrollo de comunidades locales, una de las principales potencialidades del turismo bien gestionado en apoyar un desarrollo sostenible en lo social, económico y ambiental. El segundo hito institucional con marca latinoamericana será precisamente la próxima Asamblea General de la OMT. La candidatura de Colombia se impuso en la Asamblea en las Cataratas Victoria, obteniendo el apoyo mayoritario para que Medellín reciba en 2015 a la principal reunión del sector turístico global.

The 2014 WTD commemoration, celebrated each September 27th –the date of approval of the original WTO statutes-, will be held in Mexico. There, the importance of tourism for the development of local communities will be emphasized, as it is one of the main potentialities of well-managed tourism when it comes to support a sustainable development in social, economic, and environmental matters. The second institutional milestone with a Latin-American flavor will be nothing but the next UNWTO General Assembly. Colombia’s candidacy was imposed at the Victoria Falls’ Assembly, obtaining the support of the majority in order to receive in 2015 the foremost meeting of the global tourism sector in Medellin.

Saltar vallas y separadores de calles, pasar por sobre o dentro de taxis, correr por diferentes escaleras y superar circuitos de neumáticos son algunas de las dificultades a sortear en esta inédita competencia, organizada por Aventura Aconcagua. Los competidores podrán inscribirse hasta el 30 de octubre, con una edad mínima de 16 años, en la página web www.urbanatlon.cl. “Urbanatlón Santiago 2013” was born for the most daring athletes: it is an obstacle course to be held on November 10 for the first time in Chile, in the heart of downtown Santiago. LOS LAGOS: LA REGIÓN GANADORA EN LOS PREMIOS FEDETUR LOS LAGOS: THE WINNING REGION OF THE FEDETUR AWARDS La tercera versión de los Premios Nacionales del Turismo, organizados por FEDETUR, incluyó cuatro categorías y tuvieron como foco central la sustentabilidad. El objetivo principal fue incentivar las prácticas sustentables, la responsabilidad social y la innovación en la industria turística, premiando a las empresas que destaquen en estos ámbitos. La Región de Los Lagos se llevó dos de los cuatro premios: Enjoy Chiloé, como empresa turística socialmente responsable, y Peulla, como el destino más sustentable. Los otros dos fueron para los hoteles Gen y Plaza San Francisco, ambos de Santiago. The third version of the National Tourism Awards, organized by Fedetur, included four categories and had sustainability as a central focus. The main objective was to encourage sustainable practices, social responsibility and innovation in the tourism industry, rewarding companies that excel in these areas. The Región de Los Lagos (Lakes Region) took two of the four awards: the Enjoy Chiloé hotel won as the best socially responsible tourism enterprise, and Peulla as the most sustainable destination. The other two recognitions were for the hotels Gen and Plaza San Francisco, both located in Santiago.

On the grounds of Viña Santa Cruz, 25 kilometers from Lolol, in the Sixth Region, the 10th Lolol Hooks Competition will take place, gathering the main local exponents of the horsedrawn carriages with renowned international experts. Each year more than 3.000 tourists arrive throughout the weekend, making the contest the most awaited and loved event by the local public.
