Travelweek’s latest ‘Future of Travel’ conference anticipates landmark year for travel

ON THE COVER (clockwise from top left): Andrea Hilbert; Bruce Poon Tip; Nathalie Tanious; CAmille Olivere; Oliver Weibel; Peter Ouzounov

By Cindy Sosroutomo A brand new year has arrived, and with it comes an endless number of ways to see and experience the world. With travel confidence back up and years of pent-up demand finally resulting in record bookings for many travel agents and suppliers, 2024 is anticipated to be a landmark year indeed for the industry. This key message of positivity was the underlying theme of Travelweek’s latest Future of Travel conference, held virtually on Nov. 29, 2023. Like with Travelweek’s previous conferences, ‘Future of Travel: 2024 Preview’ featured a stellar lineup of keynote speakers who all expressed their excitement for the new year and shared their latest news and offerings with viewers. To watch the event, click here. “It’s been a wild ride for the travel industry, from a complete shutdown to a very powerful rebound, which caused a few problems and chaos of its own,” said Travelweek Publisher Devin Kinasz. “But we got through all that and travel is now normalizing. I know there are a lot of agents and suppliers out there who are excited for possibly the best winter selling season ever.” Here are some key updates from the keynote speakers: Peter Ouzounov, Director of Sales, Canada, Riverside Luxury Cruises Established last year by the German-based, family-owned luxury hotel group, Seaside Collection, Riverside Cruises entered the Canadian market this past spring with Peter Ouzonov’s appointment. The cruise line, which acquired all five of Crystal Cruises’ river ships, has been sailing on the Danube

River between Budapest and Brussels since April, and also started sailing on the Rhône River in Southern France in summer 2023. This year, it has set its sights on sailings on the Rhine, the Moselle and the Main rivers. When asked whether Riverside caters to the same clientele as Crystal Cruises, which was synonymous with high-end luxury, Ouzonov assured travel advisors that it does. “All five of their river ships and most of their river cruise staff are back with us, so that’s happy news for anyone who’s travelled with Crystal before and for advisors who had clients who’ve travelled with them,” he said. “In fact, 85% of the staff that previously worked on Crystal’s Mozart returned to the ship this year, and we expect many will return to the Revel and the Debussy next year. So we’re definitely picking up from where Crystal left off.” So how exactly will Riverside differ from Crystal Cruises? Ouzonov said that the company’s aspirations are much greater. “We’re really setting out to redefine the standards of luxury in river cruising through highly personalized and intuitive service, exceptional gourmet cuisine, and flexibility, which is very important for the luxury market,” he said. “Luxury travellers don’t conform to what a company dictates – it’s the other way around. And that’s our approach to luxury. It’s individual, it’s personal.” Bruce Poon Tip, Founder, G Adventures In his ‘instabook’ titled ‘Unlearn: The Year the Earth Stood Still,’ which he published in 2020, Bruce Poon Tip wrote that the pandemic was an

opportunity for the travel industry to reinvent itself for the better. When asked whether he’s seen any lasting changes, Poon Tip admitted that the status quo didn’t change as much as he had hoped. “I think that many people thought it would change because there were so many conversations going on during COVID between tour operators that normally don’t talk to each other about how we could be better. But what did change is the consumer and their travel patterns. “People are travelling less per year but staying in destination longer – and they’re going deeper. And there are a lot of people who won’t go back to mainstream holidays and opting for more purposeful travel. There’s an inherent risk to travel now – COVID didn’t go away – so travel has to be pretty meaningful for people to do it now,” said Poon Tip. In line with this new trend, G Adventures recently announced the launch of its new Geluxe Collection, which Poon Tip described as “active luxury.” Featuring 28 trips that include physical activity, elevated dining and accommodations, and community and culture, the collection “is something that our customers have been asking from us for some time,” said Poon Tip. “It’s one of the few products that we’ve actually developed in the last 30 years that’s data-driven, where we listened to our customers,” he said. “G Adventures is very product-driven, people rely on us to tell them where to go. But The Geluxe Collection was a data decision because our customers were telling us that they wanted more active trips with more comfort, and so we had to find a way in which we can also turn that into community tourism.” January 11, 2024 | TRAVELWEEK | 5

TOP NEWS Nathalie Tanious, President & CEO, TravelBrands It’s been five months since Tanious took over the reins at TravelBrands, during a time of incredible recovery for the travel industry. According to Tanious, “we’re selling everything,” particularly all-inclusive vacations and “lots of cruises.” Tanious also highlighted the company’s dynamic packaging tool, which gives travel advisors the opportunity to package any hotel with over 80 airline partners to pretty much anywhere in the world. “So for example, you can book air and hotel to Vegas, or air and car to Paris, or air, hotel and car in Rome. You can then add an activity or an add-on, and all that is done online. Every single airline partner we have today is available through our dynamic packaging tool, in collaboration with over 1.8 million hotels in our portfolio. So whatever you’re looking for, whether it’s a two-star or five-star hotel and everything in between, we’ve got it available through our dynamic packaging tool,” said Tanious. Oliver Weibel, Director Canada, Switzerland Tourism Switzerland is set to welcome even more Canadians this year with a brand new flight between Toronto and Zurich with Swiss International Airlines. Direct flights will also be available from Montreal to Zurich and Geneva, as well as twice-daily service from Toronto to Zurich. For the summer period, flights will run from Calgary to Zurich and from Vancouver to Zurich with Edelweiss Air.

Once in destination, Canadians have a full menu of signature offerings to enjoy, said Weibel, including the world-famous Matterhorn. But to see it all, he recommends the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland, which comes in a variety of packages ranging from 3-9 days and also now includes enhanced luggage services. “This means upon arrival, you can drop off your luggage and it will be brought to the next hotel with our local DMCs, which are providing those services for your clients,” he added. Weibel also said that seasonality will be prolonged in Switzerland, meaning that during the harvest season from September and October, hotels will be open longer as well as accessibility to funiculars and the mountain areas. Camille Olivere, Chief Sales Officer, Globus family of brands Olivere noted that it was a “fantastic” year for Globus family of brands in 2023, with Avalon Waterways in particular leading the charge, followed closely by Globus, Cosmos and the company’s latest brand, Independence by Globus, formerly Monograms. She also highlighted several new initiatives launched in 2023 to help travel advisors, including paying commissions at final payments and more simplified policies. “We have always supported the travel agency channel,” said Olivere. “We only do brochures for travel advisors – we do not do direct-to-consumer brochures – and in them there’s a very clear set of reasons for why to book through a travel advisor. Plus, we’re doing special promotions only for travel advisors, so there’s a lot that we’re doing to make sure that we’re driving that demand and continuing to be loyal. “We want to be there for travel

advisors and be your partner for profit and your partner of choice, both for river cruising and for touring.” Andrea Hilbert, Senior Manager, Training and Onboarding, World of Hyatt Inclusive Collection Comprising 10 brands in all and 125 resorts across the Mexican Caribbean and Europe, the Inclusive Collection for World of Hyatt “always has something going on,” said Hilbert. As far as new resorts go, Hilbert noted that the company has a relationship with B Live Hotels to convert two of its resorts in the Dominican Republic to Sunscape properties, one of which is currently onboarding and the other in early 2024. Hilbert is also excited about a few brand new builds, including Secrets Tides in the Uvero Alto area of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and Secrets Playa Blanca in the Mexican Caribbean, the first phase of which will open in February 2024. And on the Pacific Coast of Mexico, not only will Inclusive Collection have a newbuild Dreams resort in the area, but also a new destination – the town of Mazatlan. To help travel advisors get acquainted with the company and all its brands and properties, Hilbert highlighted the company’s new advisor portal called Confidant Collective, launched in 2023 on Travel Advisor Appreciation Day. The online platform is where advisors can take the new Confidant Learning, which replaces the company’s old Master Agent Program. To watch ‘Future of Travel: 2024 Preview’ click here. Actress Cheri Oteri named godmother of Avalon’s new Suite Ship Avalon Waterways has announced that Cheri Oteri, actress and comedienne who’s widely known for her role on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ will christen the new Avalon Alegria as godmother in 2024. An international ceremony is scheduled to take place on the Douro River on March 28, 2024 in Pinhão, Portugal, after which the 102-passenger ship will become the first Suite Ship from Avalon Waterways to set sail in the country. It features 14 Deluxe staterooms and 37 Panorama Suites, and was built exclusively to sail the Douro River. Of her godmother duties, Oteri said: “I am beyond excited to have the honour of godmother to the beautiful Avalon Alegria. Taking a river cruise with a constant scenic view of rich landscapes and picturesque villages is the best way to vacation I could ever imagine. The beauty of this boat and everything it offers will make the best memories.” Pam Hoffee, president of Avalon Waterways, added: “In our search for the perfect godmother for the Avalon Alegria – our first ship in Portugal with a name that means ‘happiness’ – we knew Cheri Oteri would be the perfect choice. As a difference-making entertainer – and one

of the groundbreaking women who inspired modern comedy in America – Ms. Oteri has brought much inspiration and joy into our lives.” On adding Portugal as a new destination for Avalon, Hoffee added: “We’ve waited a long time for the perfect opportunity to add Portugal to our robust vacation portfolio and that day has nearly arrived. Inviting our guests to sail the Douro for the first time, we’re bringing the Suite Ships of Avalon, the grandest views in cruising and whim-powered itineraries to Southwestern Europe and we couldn’t be more excited.”

The Avalon Alegria will invite guests onboard to cruise one itinerary in 2024 – ‘Vida Portugal: Vineyards & Villages Along the Douro.’ The eightday cruise begins and ends in Porto and is filled with ‘Classic,’ ‘Active’ and ‘Discovery’ excursion choices. Avalon’s Suite Ships are known for their Open-Air Balconies, available in Panorama Suites and featuring wallto-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows that open 11 feet wide in Europe and 14 feet wide in Southeast Asia. Switzerland celebrates new flights, resort updates for 2024 VAIL RESORTS EXPANDS Marking a major expansion in the Swiss Alps, Vail Resorts has successfully acquired Crans-Montana Mountain Resort, joining Andermatt in its portfolio. These iconic destinations offer some of the best skiing in Switzerland, with Crans-Montana known for its stunning views and rich legacy in hosting global sporting events. Both resorts are now integral parts of Vail’s offerings. Crans-Montana will be included on select Epic Pass products for the 2024-25 ski and ride season. ZURICH

Switzerland has several new updates for 2024 that will make travel much easier – and more memorable – for Canadians.

RECORD INCREASE The destination has reported a substantial 11.5% increase in overnight stays by Canadian visitors until October 2023. The early snowfall in December that brought snow to lower elevations and excellent conditions in winter destinations, led to thousands of snow enthusiasts flocking to Swiss ski areas, marking a successful start to the season.

EXPANDED FLIGHT SERVICE In response to strong demand, Edelweiss Air is expanding its long-haul services to North America in summer 2024. Vancouver will welcome daily flights over the summer, while Calgary will benefit from up to three weekly flights. Additionally, SWISS will expand its long-haul network this summer, with nonstop daily service (except Mondays and Wednesdays) between Zurich and Toronto launching May 10.

MATTERHORN ALPINE CROSSING An 80-year-old vision has finally become reality with the completion of the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing. The Matterhorn Glacier Ride II, opened in July 2023, forms the last section of the

crossing that connects Zermatt and the Italian resort of Breuil-Cervinia, and is operational year round. The new crossing’s total journey time is 90 minutes, and the final section descends from the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise to Testa Grigia in Italy in four minutes.

GLACIER 3000 Following last year’s delay in opening due to snow conditions, this winter Glacier 3000 will relaunch its long-anticipated, super steep, new 3-kilometre black run called the Black Wall. Running from Cabane to Pillon in the Pierres Pointes sector, with a steep incline of 41 degrees, the Black Wall begins with a 265-metre tunnel built through the Rocher Jaune mountain.

COTTON CLUB ANDERMATT At 1,437 metres above sea level, the historic village of Andermatt has seen much development of late. The latest addition is the Cotton Club, which opened in December 2023 at the Swiss House. This hip new venue combines casual daytime food and drink, fine dining and upmarket après, all in one venue. 1 WEEKLY DIRECT FLIGHT FROM TORONTO TO FORT-DE-FRANCE, MARTINIQUE. Until March 31, 2024, on Saturday. with Air Canada DISCOVER

Martinique celebrates launch of new Air Canada flight It was a party to remember for the Martinique Tourism Authority (MTA), which celebrated the much-anticipated debut of the first nonstop flight from Toronto to Martinique last month. Taking place in December at Toronto Pearson International Airport

(YYZ), the lively gate party was hosted by Martinican Tourism Commissioner Bénédicte di Géronimo, who was joined by other delegates from the Caribbean destination and Air Canada representatives. First announced in April 2023, the new Air Canada route links Toronto and Martinique’s capital of Fort-deFrance via the Martinique Aimé Césaire International Airport (FDF). The route builds upon Air Canada’s existing direct service from Montreal. Toronto passengers can now enjoy the comfort of a nonstop, five-hour flight aboard an Airbus B737 BAX. “This new route, more than an air

connection, opens doors to new opportunities, strengthening our commitment to elevate Martinique to the top of must-visit Caribbean tourist destinations,” said di Geronimo. “As of today, Martinique has officially become more accessible to Canadians than ever, with up to six weekly flights from Canada among others. What an amazing journey!” In previous remarks made last year, di Géronimo confirmed Canada’s growing importance as a key market, noting that it has become Martinique’s second-largest source of tourism arrivals. “Again, I want to express my deep gratitude to Air Canada represented here and today by Ms. Audrey Tanguay Beaudette,” said di Géronimo. “Our gratitude also goes to you, our first passengers and travellers who seized this opportunity to discover our magnificent, welcoming and authentic island. Martinique loves you!” For more information go to www. martinique.org/en. January 11, 2024 | TRAVELWEEK | 19

FUTURE OF TRAVEL

Detroit: The Hidden Gem of the Midwest

In keeping with its resilient nature, Detroit has once again emerged onto the travel scene following a resurgence of investment in its arts, architecture, hospitality, food and sports. The investment has certainly paid off, with ‘Conde Nast Travel’ naming the city as one of the ‘must places to visit’ for 2024, and AFAR including it in its annual ‘Where to Go Travel List’ this year. As the only city in the United States to be designated a UNESCO City of Design, Detroit’s appeal extends far beyond its automotive roots. It offers a unique blend of innovation, art, history, culture, heritage, sports and music entertainment that appeals to a wide range of travellers. Here are some key selling points for travel agents to remember: 1. Sports haven. Did you know that

Detroit is the most dense sports district in the U.S., with three major stadiums located in the heart of the city? Detroit is home to the Detroit Lions (NFL), the Detroit Red Wings (NHL) and the Detroit Pistons (NBA). The 2024 NFL Draft will also take place in Detroit in April 2024. 2. Cultural richness. The Detroit Institute of Arts and the Motown Music Museum are must-visits for art and music lovers. Travel agents can highlight these iconic institutions in their itineraries. 3. Family friendly. The Michigan Science Center and the Detroit Zoo offer engaging experiences for families, making Detroit a great option for family vacations and long weekend trips. 4. Culinary diversity. Detroit pleases all types of palates and price points. From classic American diners and Mexican food, to soul food and East African cuisine, the city’s culinary scene attracts even the most discerning food enthusiasts.

5. Historic past. History and innovation buffs should include a visit to the Henry Ford Museum and the Guardian Building during their trip. For those seeking a more laidback experience, a cruise on the Detroit River or a visit to Belle Isle Park offers a chance to unwind. For more information go to www. visitdetroit.com.

ARIANA GUILAK HONOURED AS THE DOMICAN REPUBLIC'S 10 MILLIONTH VISITOR

The Dominican Republic reached a significant milestone over the holidays: its 10 millionth visitor of the year. The unprecedented milestone was reached on Dec. 26, 2023, with tourist Ariana Guilak receiving a special welcome by Minister of Tourism David Collado at the Punta Cana International Airport. Guilak arrived on a flight from the United States, which is the Dominican Republic’s number one market. According to Minister Collado, the country welcomed 7,863,542 tourists by air and 2,168,209 cruise passengers by sea in 2023. Recent economic figures also showed that the Dominican Republic is the country that has grown the most in tourist arrivals in the Caribbean from 2019 to date, going from 6.4 million visitors to more than 10 million. The Anguilla Tourist Board (ATB) is honing in on the golf market. With over 25 million golfers in the United States alone, the global golf tourism market is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.6% from 2022 to 2030. With this in mind, the ATB is highlighting its world-class golf facilities, including the Aurora Anguilla Resort & Golf Club, home to a Greg Norman-designed, 18-hole championship golf course and a nine-hole short course with views of Rendezvous Bay. The driving range and short game areas have been significantly upgraded, and there’s also a high-tech golf academy with two indoor hitting bays.

AURORA ANGUILLA RESORT & GOLF CLUB

The Mazatlán Tourism Board is gearing up for an exciting year indeed, with several new resorts and attractions set to open their doors. In 2024, the Mexican city will welcome Dreams Estrella Del Mar Mazatlán, Golf & Spa Resort, Fiesta Americana Zona Dorada, and Nus Wyndham Garden Suites. In addition, Mazatlán is poised to become a major player in the aerospace industry with the opening of the Mazatlán Aerospace Park. This year’s development projects amassed an initial investment of about US$817 million. In 2023, Mazatlán worked on 45 projects, of which 64% were related to the tourism-real estate industry. The hotels opening in 2024 are tapped to add 900 rooms to the city’s hospitality portfolio. Adding to Mazatlán’s tourism offerings will be the inauguration of the NUS Suites & Plaza commercial centre, featuring new restaurants, bars and shopping stores on the ground floor of Nus Wyndham Garden Suites.

ZIPAIR Tokyo announces Vancouver flights starting this March

Brazil delays eVisa requirement for citizens of Canada, U.S. and Australia to April 10

TOKYO — Low-cost carrier ZIPAIR

TORONTO — Clients travelling to Brazil over the next several months and scrambling to meet the visa deadline - have gotten a reprieve. The requirement of entry visas in Brazil for holders of ordinary passports from Canada, the U.S. and Australia has been postponed, and is now effective for arrivals scheduled from April 10 onwards. The original start date was Jan. 10. As reported last month, Brazil recently launched a new platform from which citizens of Canada, the U.S. and Australia can obtain an eVisa to enter the country. The platform was developed by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and aimed at simplifying the eVisa process. The Electronic Visa comes at a cost of US$80.90 per person and allows for multiple entries. It will have the same validity period as conventional visas (for Canadians, five years). The Brazilian Tourist Board (Embratur) made the announcement about the 3-month extension. “The extension is intended to complete the process of implementing the requirement system E-Visa and prevent the change from interfering with the flow of tourists from these countries to Brazil during the high season,”

Tokyo is expanding its transpacific network with service between Tokyo Narita and Vancouver International Airport, starting March 13, 2024. The service to Vancouver will be the carrier’s fourth route across the Pacific, following L.A., San José Mineta, and San Francisco. Reservations and tickets are now available at zipair.net. The carrier operates the B787-8 Dreamliner configured in a 290-seat layout. Initially ZIPAIR will offer three flights per week between Tokyo Narita and Vancouver. “This new route will strengthen our international network across the Pacific, while meeting the growing travel demand between Vancouver and Tokyo Japan,” said ZIPAIR President Shingo Nishida. “We sincerely look forward to welcoming customers in Canada to take advantage of our service, as this route will provide a valuable link for commercial and cultural exchange between the two countries.” ZIPAIR took flight in 2018 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan Airlines. Flights will operate between Tokyo Narita Terminal 1 – North Wing and Vancouver International Airport. Flight schedules are subject to relevant government approvals. Fare terms and conditions can be found at https:// www.zipair.net/en/farerules.

said a statement from Embratur. This update for Brazil follows on the heels of visa confusion for other countries, notably Egypt, and also India. Meanwhile last fall the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) visa waiver program was pushed back to spring 2025. As Travelweek reported in early 2023, the ETIAS visa waiver program applies to residents of more than 60 non-EU countries, including Canada, who wish to enter 30 European countries. The Brazil eVisa site can be found at https://brazil.vfsevisa.com/, however it still lists the original Jan. 10, 2024 start date.

Earn a ticket to see Taylor Swift in concert with G Adventures TORONTO — Calling all Swifties! G Adventures is giving Canadian travel agents the chance to see Taylor Swift live in concert in Toronto. As part of its worldwide ‘You Belong with G Experience’ campaign, the tour operator is letting the top 75 Global Best G Sellers earn the opportunity to see the singer perform her record-breaking ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ this November. This marks the biggest agent experience G Adventures has ever delivered, with top sellers from different countries around the world heading to concerts in Toronto, New Orleans and London in the UK.

NEWS According to Bruce Poon Tip, founder of G Adventures, the experience came to fruition as a way to give back to agents after he recognized the same sense of community and camaraderie in Taylor Swift’s fan base as he saw in G Adventures’ own community of agents and travellers. “It was 1989 when I dreamt up the concept for G Adventures, and our travel community has truly been with us throughout the eras. We want to create happiness and community for our agency partners in the same way G Adventures does for its travellers and Taylor does for her fans. It’s a love story,” he said. “On our trips, we show you incredible things. And while I love seeing you having adventures on your own, I’m even more excited to bring our agent community together in person to share this experience. “I have two daughters so I’ve heard every album, listened to the radio. This is set to be the most epic travel agent experience G Adventures has ever run – like, ever. I hope you all wanna hang out because you belong with G. Are you ready for it?” he added. Changing lives through travel is how agents can join the experience, with the top seller for each month earning a space from Jan. 1 through July 31, 2024. Agents will claim their spaces this way, with wild card tickets to be announced in coming months. Tickets will be awarded via cumulative sales, with the first two winners being awarded at the end of January, then one new winner each month from February-July.

Collette refunds all travellers booked on tours to Israel for first half of 2024

Oceania Cruises says no changes to commissionable NCF program at this time PAWTUCKET, RI — Collette has cancelled all tour departures to Israel through June 30, 2024. Collette said the decision was made in order to ensure the safety and flexibility of its travellers. All travellers who were booked on departures to Israel with Collette through the first half of 2024 will be refunded in full. The price paid for the tour, flights, and insurance will be refunded to any traveller who was booked on tour traveling during that timeframe, at the time of cancelation. Collette has also announced that any travel advisor who booked travellers during this period will keep all advanced commissions paid from those bookings. “Collette always prioritizes the safety and time of its travellers, which is why we have made the early decision to cancel all departures to Israel through June 30, 2024,” said Jeff Roy, Executive Vice President at Collette.

TORONTO — A spokesperson for

Oceania Cruises says so far the cruise line has no plans to back away from its commissionable NCF program, targeted at the line’s top 50 agencies. Both Oceania Cruises and NCL, as well as Regent Seven Seas Cruises, are owned by NCLH. News broke in December that NCL plans to phase out its groundbreaking commissionable NCF (non-commissionable fees) program, first announced in November 2022. The last day will be March 30, 2024. The news was confirmed by NCL. “The program, which was the first of its kind and supported travel partners during one of the most challenging times in the cruise industry by paying commissions on non-commissioned fares and boosting advisor earnings, will discontinue on April 1, 2024,” an NCL spokesperson told Travelweek. However, a spokesperson for Oceania Cruises told Travelweek on Dec. 19 that Oceania’s program is continuing as is. “There are no plans to change anything at this juncture but the line will be looking at learnings that can be taken away in the new year.” Nikki Upshaw, Oceania’s Senior Vice President of Global Sales, added: “The program continues with the top 50 agencies. We did not expand the program. The Oceania Cruises program applies to all bookings and there are revenue growth requirements to stay in the program.” January 11, 2024 | TRAVELWEEK | 27

TORONTO — A new luxury travel sur-

vey commissioned by one of the biggest names in high-end travel shows that price really is no object when it comes to ease of travel, convenience, service and making the most of holiday time. Kensington Tours’ Luxury Travelers Survey, conducted with Opinium Research, polled 400 adults from households earning $250,000+ and with bookings for luxury trips worth at least $10,000 over the past five years. The biggest take-away? It’s not so much about the destinations that money can buy, but mitigating the hassles of travel that affluent travellers are more than willing to pay for. A seamless travel experience is worth its weight in gold, as it turns out. Key findings from the survey include: • Nearly seven in 10 luxury travellers (68%) say they are willing to pay a premium for the ability to skip lines, avoid crowds, and experience private tours. • Other offerings that luxury travellers would pay a premium for include personalized, bespoke trips tailored to their wants and needs (66%), one-stop planning (62%), and insider access to exclusive events (56%). • Respondents also reported that their travel experiences would be somewhat or greatly enhanced by offerings typically provided by a luxury tour operator, such as access to popular attractions with no wait times (81%), privately guided tours without the crowds (78%), access to exclusive, world-renowned events (74%), and access to insider

NEWS experiences not traditionally available to the general public (72%). • A significant portion of luxury travellers (38%) report taking 3-5 trips annually, while 28% take 6-10 trips. Some 14% embark on more than 10 trips each year. Most of the trips average two weeks or more (57%). • 72% of survey participants expressed their intention to enlist the services of travel experts for their upcoming vacation planning. • 82% of those surveyed intending to increase their family travel this year, showing that the demand for intergenerational travel is alive and well • A significant number of respondents - 89% - plan to explore new destinations in 2024 with Switzerland, Norway, and Portugal named as top destinations. • Top-cited frustrations include locating appropriate accommodations (41%), avoiding tourist traps (38%), and coordinating activities (38%). • More than 50% expressed interest in distinctive experiences such as luxurious villa stays featuring inhouse amenities and private yacht expeditions. Also in the survey, among respondents familiar with Kensington Tours, the company tied for the highest perceived quality rating with 77% of respondents ranking it with an above average perceived quality, the largest percentage granted to any tour operator in the survey. Kensington Tours’ new programs include Beyond Villas by Kensington Tours, Kensington Yachts and Voyages by Kensington Tours.

With the offer, agents and a guest can earn a free eight-day 2024 Rhine, Main or Danube river cruise by making three new bookings on any Scenic or Emerald Cruises 2024 European river cruise, or earn a free Caribbean cruise by making three new bookings on select 2024 Emerald Cruises yacht voyages or select 2024/2025 Scenic Eclipse sailings. The three new cruise bookings must be made between Jan. 1 and March 21, 2024 and need to be on the same brand’s product to earn a free cruise on that brand’s product. Agents can even earn multiple free cruises by booking three cabins on each of the different brand’s products. For example, if an agent books three cabins on the luxury Emerald Cruises river sailings and three cabins on the ultra-luxury Scenic Eclipse yachts, they earn a free Emerald Cruises European river cruise and a free Scenic Eclipse Caribbean cruise for themselves and a guest. Once the three bookings with deposits are made on either Scenic or Emerald cruises, travel agents must fill in the applicable form before April 14, 2024. Travel agent flyers and forms can be viewed here:

Air Canada reports strong operational performance for the holiday season MONTREAL — Favourable weather conditions and lessons learned from last year gave Canada’s airlines - and their passengers - a much calmer experience this holiday season compared to the same period in 2022. Air Canada is reporting a strong operational performance for the yearend holiday travel period, during which nearly 2.6 million customers were transported safely. Craig Landry, Executive VP and COO at Air Canada, said the airline achieved some of its best operational results in a decade, including completing 98% 34 | TRAVELWEEK | January 11, 2024

of scheduled flights, with an on-time performance (OTP) of 70%. “We thank our customers for entrusting their travel to Air Canada and I am proud that we delivered on our promise to transport them safely and conveniently. Over the holidays we carried about 2.6 million customers on more than 20,000 flights, with an on-time performance of 70%. Our success was the result of extensive advance preparations and the hard work of our people, helped by moderate winter weather. With a clear focus on our customers and on improving the stability and resilience of our operation, we have implemented a range of initiatives to ensure we continue to improve our operational performance into 2024 and beyond,” said Landry. The 2.6 million customers who flew on Air Canada over the 2023-24 holiday period represented about 10% more customers than in the same period in 2022. As Air Canada notes, this is equivalent to moving nearly the entire combined population of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, or everyone in Canada’s Atlantic provinces. Air Canada also notes that its 70% OTP was a “dramatic increase” from 40% in 2022, when severe winter weather disrupted travel, and well above the last pre-pandemic holiday period in 2019, when OTP was 54%. The average delay, when one occurred, was 37 minutes, which is a 43% reduction from 2022 and 10% better than the last pre-pandemic holiday period in 2019. There were 20,075 flights operated, with a completion rate of 98%. This resulted in a

80% reduction in cancelled flights as compared to 2022, and an 71% reduction as compared to the last pre-pandemic holiday period in 2019. The volume of delayed or mishandled bags dropped by 58% as compared to the prior year, translating into a baggage handling success rate of 98.6%. The new tracking feature on the Air Canada mobile app lets passengers monitor the progress of their bag at key points in the journey. Air Canada is also sharing key points as it works to improve operational efficiency … • Stable staffing levels that exceed those from 2019, with continually increased experience levels reinforced through additional training programs • Improvements in schedule design that allow for additional flexibility in ground time and connecting time for customers • Collaboration in planning and execution with all key partners in the travel ecosystem, including airport authorities; agencies responsible for airport security, customs and border processing and air traffic control; as well as third party ground handlers, caterers and fuelers • A systematic focus on customer experience through a new internal program across the company called ECX, or Elevating the Customer Experience, that breaks down all key passenger touch points and generates improvements through investments in technology, self service, and business process redesign

Style, convenience at New World Millennium Hong Kong Hotel for Connect Hong Kong Fam By Chris Kinasz

HONG KONG — Participants of the recent Connect Hong Kong Fam, including Travelweek, stayed at New World Millennium Hong Kong Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui East. This five-star luxury hotel offers plenty of comfort and all the amenities one needs to make for an unbelievable hotel stay. The entire property was completely refurbished at the end of 2017. Deluxe accommodations were designed with comfort, convenience and efficiency in mind. Rooms certainly have everything a guest would need for a comfortable and simple stay on their journey. Many rooms have a perfect view looking straight at Victoria Harbour. Among the many great features, the best part of this hotel might just be the breakfast buffet. It’s the biggest buffet many have likely ever seen in a hotel, with a healthy selection of different foods to choose from. It offers eastern and western fare with one chef making fresh omelettes, another whipping up pancakes and waffles.

The hotel has many great amenities, first and foremost the rooftop pool, open 365 days a year. Complete with loungers and umbrellas for relaxing, the rooftop offers another great opportunity to take in the stunning views of the Hong Kong skyline. Another excellent amenity in the Residence Lounge & Bar on the top floor of the hotel. With unforgettable views of the harbour and skyline, it’s a chic place to have a quiet drink with colleagues or with friends in an upscale setting. There are multiple fine dining options onsite. In addition to the Residence Lounge, there’s Café East where breakfast is served, The Lounge off the lobby and four other full-service restaurants. All venues are ideal for meetings or casual meals, and the hotel does weddings too. Just below the pool is a gym with ample equipment to get in a solid workout while enjoying the views. There’s also a men’s and women’s sauna. The business centre is wellequipped with conveniences such as photocopying, secretarial help and

translation support. It can be hard at times for visitors, especially first timers, to know exactly where they are when in Hong Kong, but it was evident that this hotel was centrally located in an extremely convenient position for accessing the city. There are many shops, restaurants and bars within walking distance that are bustling yet easy to navigate. It’s just a five-minute walk to MTR (Mass Transit Railway) and within short walking distance of some very upscale shopping plus attractions like Hong Kong Coliseum, Hong Kong Cultural Centre and Hong Kong Space Museum. The Tsim Sha Tsui harbourfront promenade is also steps away for those angling for a stroll or a nice jog. For more information, visit NewWorldMillenniumHotel.com.

Reggae Marathon delivers the wow factor to Jamaica’s running scene By Annie Cicvaric

NEGRIL — Warm fuzzies and nostal-

gia describe what I felt upon returning to Negril, Jamaica, early last month. Following a nine-year absence, I am back to participate in the Reggae Marathon race, and I wonder where the time went. Running is an activity absent from most people’s vacation-to-do lists, and surprisingly, here I am on my January 11, 2024 | TRAVELWEEK | 35

NEWS fourth go around. Oddly enough, this race never loses its excitement. While Jamaica is most commonly associated with pristine beaches, warm, inviting waters, and Bob Marley music, the island has gradually developed and sustained a solid running culture in recent years, especially since, and who could forget, Usain Bolt, who put Jamaica on the map after winning three gold medals at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. The Reggae Marathon, which recently completed its 23rd year, remains an iconic race associated with Jamaica’s running culture. For me, it’s more than just a race; it’s an experience that attracts runners worldwide for many reasons. No doubt, enjoying Negril’s beautiful seven-mile beach hits the top of the list. In the pre-pandemic era, the race attracted upward of 3,000 international and local runners, from novice to advanced. To this day it has had a remarkable impact on tourism in its host city, Negril. At a pre-race press conference, I was privy to some exciting changes for runners to expect on race day, and the optimism around rebuilding the race post-pandemic was inspiring. Rounding out the changes is the enhanced post-race live entertainment and an unprecedented total of 30 music providers throughout the route. From a runner’s perspective, the

more music, the better. Other changes for the 2023 event were removing the full marathon distance due to low attendance, and the pre-race pasta party, which I was delighted to hear was in the plans to return the following year.

THE START The Long Bay Beach Park (situated along Negril’s famed beach) is a convenient start and finish for the race, which starts promptly at 5:15 a.m. To build on the panache, you can expect fireworks and running through a torch-lit chamber to add to the fun. The route is flat (absolutely no hills here), with plentiful hydration stations and friendly locals handing out sealed baggies of water and Gatorade. As for the weather, expect balmy temperatures around 24C with no rainfall. Meanwhile the blast of Bob Marley music accompanying you each step of the way and the mile marker signs with inspirational Marley quotes make this Jamaican race experience unique.

Bue will now transition to the role of Senior Vice President, Finance & Deputy Chief Financial Officer, reporting to Scott. 36 | TRAVELWEEK | January 11, 2024

THE FINISH After being greeted by a smiling volunteer who hands you your hard-earned medal, you can now enjoy the aprèsrace activities. There are misting stations, massages available and plenty of props for photos. You can also enjoy a cool beverage from a freshly cut coconut, or the island’s favourite Red Stripe beer. However, the best treat post-race is removing your shoes, with toes-insand, before jumping into the ocean to cool off. Now, you’re ready to enjoy the postrace entertainment line-up.

WHAT’S NEW FOR 2024? In addition to its 10km and half marathon, the Reggae Marathon will introduce a new distance later this year, the ever-popular 5km. As explained to us by the race director, this entry-level race distance is currently in place in many races across Jamaica and will be a game-changer in attracting new participants. “We see a lot of people who wish to pursue a healthy lifestyle. The new distance is inclusive and approachable for many people and can alter the lifestyle in our society and Jamaica,” said race director Alfred Francis. “We feel responsible for carrying the message of pursuing a healthy lifestyle through running,” he added. With my high expectations already met over a decade ago, I took absolute pleasure in the sights and sounds of my return to the Reggae Marathon. It’s a perfect combination to come for the sun and stay for the run. For more details on the Reggae Marathon check out www.reggaemarathon.com.
