A TOP DESTINATION FOR CRUISE TOURISM
S
ailing through the blue waters has a charm of its own that cannot be surpassed by anything. The Dubai Cruise Tourism, which is a part of Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, packages and promotes Dubai’s cruise tourism really well. The largest and most efficient port for cruise purpose in the entire Middle East is situated in Dubai today. The huge port supports Dubai in extending world-class service to all the international cruise passengers and can handle passengers of five ships simultaneously. In 2014, Dubai greeted more than 500,000 cruise tourists and this year it has geared up to receive more than 600,000 tourists sailing through the inviting waters of the UAE. With top-notch facilities available, Dubai has become the top winter cruise destination catering to people, specifically from October to July.

It is the excellent air connectivity of Dubai with other countries because of which most of the tourist and shipping companies prefer to travel via Dubai seaport. There are as many as 125 different airlines operating through Dubai to connect 284 diverse locations. When vessels arrive from across the globe, most of the crew change members prefer to travel via Dubai Airport. At the same time, tourists returning from cruise choose to travel to their home countries from Dubai. More and more luxury cruise ships are making an entry into the city, thereby enticing more tourists to visit the land. The cruise tourism further received a boost with the UAE government introducing multiple-entry visas for cruise passengers travelling to all the UAE ports, just for
AED 200. It has made the entire process smoother and faster for people to enjoy their tour. They can visit UAE via any airport, embark on their cruise journey, travel out of their ports and finally enter UAE on the same visa. Furthermore, the flexibility offered to passengers from 46 countries to enter into UAE without a prior visa is drawing more people into the country. Besides, though cruise tourism is young in Dubai, it is growing by the day due to the huge investment in infrastructure and redevelopment of the important parts of the city. It is working in collaboration with all the Gulf countries to uplift cruise tourism to the maximum extent possible. With so many initiatives, Dubai’s aim to draw 20 million visitors per year by 2020 is definitely not a far-fetched dream.

Arabic is the national language of UAE but it’s very easy to communicate and navigate in Dubai without any major language barriers. Government departments, taxi drivers, store staff and hotel workers are very well versed in English, making traversing Dubai almost as easy as in an Englishspeaking home country. There is also a large expat population from all corners of the globe and as a result, a wide variety of languages is understood. However, trying to master a few basic phrases in Arabic is a nice way to show respect to local culture and traditions.
• Do not distract those who are praying, or walk in front of them. • Do not enter the mosque unless on a guided tour (Non Muslims & Ladies • Please remove shoes before entering a mosque. • Women should carry scarves to cover their heads • Do not offer a handshake to an Emirati of an opposite gender. • Photography of Emirati women is not permitted. • Showing of strong emotion in public, even if in a legal relationship, is not accepted. • Revealing dress in public and in family places is looked upon as a sign of disrespect. • Consumption/possession of drugs is prohibited and can be penalised by life imprisonment.

WIND
SURFING
S
ummer time in Dubai or in fact in any part of the world means that it’s time to head to the beach, to work on your tan, to flaunt the gym workouts you have been going to or just to relax. We have an idea that can combine all three into one activity that will make going to the beach more fun and addictive. Living or visiting Dubai during the summer gives you the ideal opportunity to check out the countless beaches on offer. We are blessed to be just by the breath-taking Arabian ocean so a trip to the beach needs to be on your list. While you’re at the beach we suggest trying out wind surfing. Although it is known as an extreme water sport it is one that provides exhilaration and freedom once you get the hang of it. There are many instructors in Dubai and a fairly large group of surfers living in Dubai so the technology and equipment to enjoy the sport is very accessible not to mention affordable. It is also a good sport to experience with your friends, family and even kids. There are many websites that provide information on windsurfing and even kite surfing which are more or less in the same sports family (if we might say so!) so getting advice or arranging classes are easy.
Some beaches that you can try out the sport include Jebel Ali Beach located south of the Jebel Ali Hotel. The hotel has a water sports club that provide classes and equipment rental. Meanwhile Black Palace Beach is a large open beach on Umm Suqeim road, however Kite Beach on the same road is the most popular and gets very crowded. A good location to go with your family would be the Sunset Beach, it has a good mix of swimmers and other water sports users so you can enjoy a full day out at this beach. If you live more towards Sharjah, then we suggest Mamzar Beach. Check out the Surf House, where you can take part in surfing, surfaris, yoga, shop and much more. Get in touch on info@surfingdubai.com, +971 50 5043020 or visit www.surfingdubai.com. Another school to try out if DuKite, operating since 2005 with IKO certification. ubai is full of quirky night spots which as a visitor or a local you can experience a night of fun every day; as the different themes and concepts in Dubai are endless. Entertainment specialists are always on the look out to create something new and exciting for night owls to the city of Dubai. No doubt there is something to do every night. A different place to try out and a new night spot that just opened up will be the talk of the town. There are some night spots that have stood the test of time and continue to draw huge crowds of first-timers as well as regular’s night after night, weekend after weekend since 2012. The Stables bar in Dubai is a must-go to place. Not only is it conveniently located, it offers a good mix of music from the live band and karaoketo a much-loved bar food. While the favourites are the Beef Chilli Nachos, Chicken Wings and Stables Mini Burgers, you can also have your pick of soups, salads, a range of hot and cold appetizers, pizzas (and even a Brownie pizza), full English breakfast, sharing platters, grills, steaks and of course desserts.
This horse racing-themed pub off Sheikh Zayed Roadis night spot that you need to visit at least once, perhaps its popularity if because Dubai is known for its gorgeous Arabian horses and not forgetting home to the World’s richest horse race, the Dubai World Cup. We also reckon it could be because of the electric bull on the second floor. If you’re adventurous enough, we suggest trying to ride the bull to see how long you last. It is an experience you must try at least one no matter how embarrassing it is. However, if you have tried it already and it is not something you are good at then, sit back and watch the fun as other patrons hold on. The décor transports you to a bar perhaps in the mid-west and its friendly atmosphere is comforting and welcoming, no doubt the Stables have the right mix of music, F&B and entertainment for a night out with friends and family. Plan your night out; make your reservation for a table; budget about AED 300 for two people including beverages and head to Raddison Royal Hotel, Sheikh Zayed Road, Trade Centre Area, Dubai. The pub is by the hotel and even offers valet parking.

Dubai is a shopper’s paradise. From some of the world’s most amazing malls, including the world’s largest shopping space, to the city’s atmospheric souks where traditional local commerce comes alive, the choice is endless. Spend some time in the modern bazaars of Souk Al Bahar and Souk Madinat Jumeirah and explore corridors filled with treasures and trinkets to take home as a fitting reminder of your time in Dubai. Or pay a visit to the Gold & Diamond Park where a shimmering selection of jewellery awaits. There is something to suit all shopping tastes in this eclectic city. Determine a maximum price that you are willing to pay from the outset and stick to it. If the vendor refuses to budge on price, look elsewhere to see if another retailer stocks the same item. The chances are that they could be more accommodating. Try to purchase as many items as possible from the same vendor as you are more likely to get a good discount this way. Be friendly and light-hearted, bargaining is best treated as a game and if it looks like you aren’t going to achieve your desired result then justwalk away. Take time to browse rather than purchasing on impulse. Often the best deals are to be had further inside the markets where the shops are less visible and receive less custom. Carry cash and small bills to Flea markets as credit/ debit cards won’t usually be accepted. Also carry a pair of sunglasses and some water to stay hydrated in the hot sun as you browse.

SOUQ.COM
T
he term ‘Souq’ conjures up a picture of a lively outdoor market place in an Arab city with people bustling around shops, buying and selling goods. It is the enthusiasm and energy experienced in such Souqs that made Ronaldo Mouchawar, the founder of Souq.com, choose the namesake for his site. Souq.com does what an actual Souq does – selling the widest variety of products to people at the most competitive prices. Souq.com initially started off as an auction site, like e-Bay, in 2005 and was linked to Maktoob, an internet portal. It was in 2011 that the site got converted into an online shopping site, where various retail items were displayed for purchase. Headquartered in Dubai, Souq.com has its offices spread across six countries - UAE, Jordan, Egypt, KSA, India and Kuwait. Souq.com has been able to flourish in spite of all the political upheavals, strict and varying regulations between countries and logistical challenges. Currently, it is providing its much sought-after services to Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. The largest shopping site in the Arab world, Souq.com has made shopping convenient with more than 400,000 products on display. You are sure to find anything you are looking for with www.uae.souq.com
products ranging from mobiles and tablets, clothing items, handbags, shoes, fashion accessories, video games, toys, baby gear, beauty products, home decor, kitchen appliances, sports and fitness products, household goods, watches, perfumes and many, many more categories. There are over 23 million people visiting Souq.com per month and the number is still increasing. Souq.com not only allows you to purchase products but also sell. You are permitted to list your product free of cost. Once the product is sold, a commission is to be paid to the site based on the price of the product sold. Many international investors have shown interest in the company and have stepped forward to fund it. Souq.com is now set to strengthen its technology to further improve the payment processes, extend their marketplace operations by working on their logistics, create a strong talent pool and introduce new product categories. Since 70% of the purchases happen through mobile devices, the company is all set to make improvements in their mobile apps. What Amazon is to the United States, Souq.com is to the Middle East. It is here to change the face of shopping in the Arabian world. +971 4 437 0900

ARABIC DAGGERS
T
he word “dagger” is usually associated with fear and dread; however, the perception completely changes when it comes to Arabic daggers, also known as Jambia. Though their original purpose was self-defence, Arabic daggers stand as priceless antique pieces of art today. These short knives usually have a curved double-edged blade, made of non-corrosive steel, which tapers at the tip.
You could also appreciate them as antique pieces ensconced within the showcases of museums.
Arabic daggers are famous for their hilt, which was traditionally made of elephant ivory or horns of animals like cow, buffalo or rhinoceros. The horns were probably boiled to flatten them and soaked in or rubbed with vegetable oils to lend them a glaze. Back in the pre-Islamic era, in Yemen, men also wore the Jambia while performing their traditional Dagger Dance - spinning around waving the daggers above their heads.
The Gold Souk in Deira has replicas of Omani daggers available for around AED500. Check the antique shops on both sides of the Dubai Creek and the Karama Shopping Complex, near the fish market. Most of them have a good collection of daggers at a reasonable price. Arabian Treasures at Deira City Center, MutrahSouq and the Yemen Pavilion at the Global Village are other places you should explore. You will come across daggers at prices starting from AED100 and going up to a few thousands. Another interesting place would be the Antique Museum/Souvenir Shop at AlQuozthat houses many antique-looking daggers. Souk Madinat Jumeirah also sells Arabic daggers, but it can be a little pricey here. The original daggers are heavy, have five rings and can be 50+ years old. For the serious collectors, the Al Jaber Gallery at The Dubai Mall sells authenticand antique Arabian daggers that cost upwards of AED 20,000.
A symbol of pride among men, the Arabic daggers differed according to one’s social status. Commoners were allowed to carry simple ‘Asib’ daggers placed vertically at the front of a belt at their waist. The aristocrats, however, wore “Tuza” daggers, placed in highly ornamented metal or velvet sheaths, at the front of the belt in a diagonal position. Today, the Arabic dagger has become a rare view, with few Emiratis wearing them as a part of their traditional attire.
When in Dubai, you can actually become the proud owner of an Arabic dagger. From original Arabic daggers to exact replicas, you will find quite a few choices. Crafted in silver with real gold plating or carved from wood, marble or sandalwood, enclosed in ornate sheaths worked in silver thread, are a few of the options.
