Arabic is the national language of UAE but it’s very easy to communicate and navigate in Dubai without any major language barriers. Government departments, taxi drivers, store staff and hotel workers are very well versed in English, making traversing Dubai almost as easy as in an Englishspeaking home country. There is also a large expat population from all corners of the globe and as a result, a wide variety of languages is understood. However, trying to master a few basic phrases in Arabic is a nice way to show respect to local culture and traditions.
• Do not distract those who are praying, or walk in front of them. • Do not enter the mosque unless on a guided tour (Non Muslims & Ladies • Please remove shoes before entering a mosque. • Women should carry scarves to cover their heads • Do not offer a handshake to an Emirati of an opposite gender. • Photography of Emirati women is not permitted. • Showing of strong emotion in public, even if in a legal relationship, is not accepted. • Revealing dress in public and in family places is looked upon as a sign of disrespect. • Consumption/possession of drugs is prohibited and can be penalised by life imprisonment.

HOLIDAY
HOMES
S
ummer time is nearly upon and one of the best things about Summer is that it is the time that is perfect for travelling. Going away with family, friends and loved ones is exciting and much looked forward to.Picking the destination is easy and if your travels bring you to Dubai or you are planning a Satiation then we suggest looking for an accommodation option with a difference, perhaps a Holiday Home. It usually has all of the benefits of being a home away from home and contrary to popular belief there are quite a few Holiday Homes in Dubai.Just like planning any other holiday, a Holiday Home too needs you to make some decisions. Now that your destination – Dubai – is locked in, you need to figure out if you want to stay by the beach or in the city, On the Palm or near the nightlife. If you want a beach holiday, then look no further than the Garden Villas on Palm Jumeriah. Specifically,River danceVilla (bookings through www.mydubaistay.com) is a truly stunning 5-bedroom signature holiday villa in Dubai which can sleep up to 10 people.

These apartments are a few minutes away the sandy and guest relations will be morethan happy to help you plan time to explore
the city and see its attractions. While Dubai Mall and Burk Khalifa are about 20km away, staying in a place such as this will give you the feeling of home so you will feel completely relaxed. Another hotspot to stay in would be the downtown area at a pool view self-catering one-bedroom apartment. The apartments here have a balcony, a dining area in the living room, fully equipped kitchen and guests can relax at the extensive pool, sundeck, outdoor shisha terrace, gymnasium, health clubs, all-day dining cafĂŠ and kids club. The apartments have regular professional cleaning and once again talk to the guest relations for insight on what to do in the city as staying here means Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa are just 5 minutes away and so are many night spots, restaurants and shopping districts.

BBQ
& CAMPING
IN THE DESERT
L
iving and working in the Middle East, we are blessed with the endless beautiful breath taking deserts. After visitors and residents alike have tried out the ‘top ten things to do’ lists which the city has to offer one activity that never gets worn out is BBQ and camping in the desert. Each trip is different and each day in the desert offers a new sunset, sunrise, landscape, stories, sights, sounds, smells and memories, so it is no surprise that camping in the desert is an on-going activity. Each person has their own favourite spot, their secret spot, or a place where like-minded people gather to share an evening relaxing, chatting and live grill food and drinks. There is no better feeling than packing up some camping equipment, tents, sleeping bags, foldable chairs, tables, basic essentials, a sweater in case it gets chilly, and of course some food home-made marinated meat, salad, and some
chips. Once you have organised who brings what and how many 4x4s you need, then decide on a time to meet, preferably early evening, meet up at a centrally based gas station closest to your camp side and get ready for some off-roading fun and adventure The country is 80 percent desert so there is for sure no shortage of places to explore or talk about. However here are some of the favourites we have narrowed it down to. Our first choice would be to go to Big Red the enormous terracotta-coloured dune. There is a lot of activity that goes on here as it is popular for off-roading and quad biking. If it is too crowded there are plenty of places in around this dune to set up camp and settle in for the night. So start getting your rubbish bags, toilet rolls, first aid kit, matches, newspapers, firewood, GPS and other camping essentials together and look forward to a drive out of Dubai this weekend.
If you want a camping spot with a Wadi (water pool) then try Wadi Madbah. This spot is said to be easy to get to and offers many spots for camping and BBQing. Since the weather is getting hotter, you might want to try a cooler camping spot higher up in the mountains in a place such as Jebel Yibir, said to be the highest peak in the UAE, almost 1,350 in height. Other spots include the famous Al Gharbia area where the annual kite surfing competition takes place. This place has a lot of activities going on so once you set up camp you can enjoy any activity you have planned or have experience in. The furthest camping site we can suggest is in Liwa closest to the Abu Dhabi Emirate. This trip is not for everyone as it is about 4 hours away from Dubai. The camping site is just by the world’s biggest sand dune. This trip demands that you go in a group as we don’t suggest going solo. But once you make the arrangements this trip is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

SUHOOR
R
amadan, the Holy month of the Muslims, apart from being a month of spiritual reflection is also a time of fasting. During this ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Muslims eat only two meals a day – Suhoor, which is at taken pre-dawn and Iftar, consumed after sunset. According to Islamic beliefs, Suhoor is a blessed meal eaten before the first prayer of the day, which prepares the body for a prolonged fast. Unlike Iftars, Suhoors remain a quiet affair; in the early morning hours, piety and prayers are the topmost thoughts on the mind. Yet Dubai has subtly touched upon this element too. You will find the widest choice of Suhoors throughout the city, each with its own distinct and delectable experience. Soon after the grand Iftar rituals are over, the city kitchens do not slowdown; rather they continue bustling with activity in preparation for Suhoor. However, compared to the lavish buffets of Iftar, Suhoor is a rather private affair. As per tradition, fruits, yoghurts, puddings and sweetened grains are to be consumed at Suhoor - wholesome but light nutrition to see you through the day-long
fast. But with the transition of time, Suhoor meals have evolved to accommodate classic dishes of meat, soups, sea food and sweet dishesas well. In Dubai, most Suhoors are priced a la carte; a decent Suhoor at a minimum spend of around AED 100 is available at places like Layali Ramadan Tent at Brunello Restaurant, Jumeirah Zabeel Saray – Mehteran Majlis, Hawthorn Suites, Ramadan Tent at Habtoor Grand Resort and Petals Restaurants at Time Oak Hotel. You can relish on a delicious spreadfor AED 100 to AED 200 at places like the Downtown Tent at Burj Khalifa,QD’s at Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club, Sarab Rooftop Lounge at Bab Al Shams Desert Resort and Spa, Al Nafoorah Marquee at Jumeirah Emirates Towers, Laylati Café at Grand Hyatt Dubai, Al Khaimah Tent at Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach, Asateer at Atlantis, Dubai and Ewaan at The Palace, Downtown. For an exclusive Suhoor experience, places like Al Majlis Tent at Mina Al Salam, Mamemo Majlis at Four Seasons Resort and Skyline Lounge Crowne Plaza at Festival City offer a scrumptious Suhoor for AED 200 and above.
"... and eat and drink till the whiteness of the day becomes distinct from the blackness of the night at dawn" (Holy Qur'an, Surah Baqarah 2:187).

Dubai is a shopper’s paradise. From some of the world’s most amazing malls, including the world’s largest shopping space, to the city’s atmospheric souks where traditional local commerce comes alive, the choice is endless. Spend some time in the modern bazaars of Souk Al Bahar and Souk Madinat Jumeirah and explore corridors filled with treasures and trinkets to take home as a fitting reminder of your time in Dubai. Or pay a visit to the Gold & Diamond Park where a shimmering selection of jewellery awaits. There is something to suit all shopping tastes in this eclectic city. Determine a maximum price that you are willing to pay from the outset and stick to it. If the vendor refuses to budge on price, look elsewhere to see if another retailer stocks the same item. The chances are that they could be more accommodating. Try to purchase as many items as possible from the same vendor as you are more likely to get a good discount this way. Be friendly and light-hearted, bargaining is best treated as a game and if it looks like you aren’t going to achieve your desired result then justwalk away. Take time to browse rather than purchasing on impulse. Often the best deals are to be had further inside the markets where the shops are less visible and receive less custom. Carry cash and small bills to Flea markets as credit/ debit cards won’t usually be accepted. Also carry a pair of sunglasses and some water to stay hydrated in the hot sun as you browse.

PERFECT SILK
SCARF
N
o other sartorial accessory in the world expresses beauty, elegance and luxury like a silk scarf does. It transcends countries and centuries, from China to Egypt, from Queen Nefertiti’s times to the fashion shows of Milan and Paris today. Thierry Hermes’introduction of the first luxury silk scarves in 1937 marks its advent as a modern day fashion statement. Like with all things fashion, the best of silk scarves are to be found in Dubai. But before you set out to hand-pick silk scarves as souvenirs or gifts, let us quickly learn a few things about them. If it feels light, delicate and almost transparent, you have a silk chiffon in your hands - ideal for summers to give a fashionable tweak to any outfit. When you get a clear feel of the soft and elegant weave pattern on your fingers, it is undoubtedly a mixture of twill and silk. The finest quality of silk scarves is, however, made from silk satin - extremely supple to the touch with a lustrous finish. Warm against your skin during winters and cool in summers, they add richness and grace to your style. Let us start out on the trail of silk scarves in Dubai
with the medium-end options. Our first stop would be the Textile Souk or Naif Souk, with scarves ranging from most intricate to simple designs. From there on, we can explore the Al Fahidi Street in Bur Dubai, which has both roadside stores and shopping malls; next on the to-visit list is the Apsara Souk. All these places have plenty of options with varying qualities of silk; you are sure to find one that meets your needs. If souk-shopping is not your style, then the Deira City Centre is the best option. It has the right mix of high-street and local stores specializing in silk scarves that offer good value for money. For a truly exceptional selection of premium silk scarves with designs like intricate Arabesque calligraphy and images of monarchs to floral designs, you need to visitLe Boudoir d’Eden, Stradivarius, Carrefour, Hermes, Top Shop, Al Khazana, Galerie Hamadan and Aigner at Dubai Mall and Kashka, Celine, Bvlgari, Boutique 1 and Hanayen at MOE. Places like 50°C at Souk Al Baha, The Walk at JBR and Antique Museum at 12B Al Quoz Industrial Area also have some of the most exquisite silk scarves that money can buy.
