Arabic is the naonal language of UAE but it’s very easy to communicate and navigate in Dubai without any major language barriers. Government departments, taxi drivers, store staff and hotel workers are very well versed in English, making traversing Dubai almost as easy as in an Englishspeaking home country. There is also a large expat populaon from all corners of the globe and as a result, a wide variety of languages is understood. However, trying to master a few basic phrases in Arabic is a nice way to show respect to local culture and tradions.

• Do not distract those who are praying, or walk in front of them. • Do not enter the mosque unless on a guided tour (Non Muslims & Ladies • Please remove shoes before entering a mosque. • Women should carry scarves to cover their heads • Do not offer a handshake to an Emira of an opposite gender. • Photography of Emira women is not permied. • Showing of strong emoon in public, even if in a legal relaonship, is not accepted. • Revealing dress in public and in family places is looked upon as a sign of disrespect. • Consumpon/possession of drugs is prohibited and can be penalised by life imprisonment.

ABRA

B

efore and when vising Dubai there are a lot of suggesons of things to do that people will talk about. Similar to all countries in the world, some are must dos and favourites amongst residents are tourists alike such as eang sharwama, going on a Dhow cruise or a desert safari, which are geared to giving you a feel for the country.

Old Souk (near the Spice Souk) to the Bur Dubai staon operates every day from 5am unl midnight. Meanwhile Route 2 from Sabkha Staon to Dubai Old Souk is operaonal all day.

However, there are also acvies that only residents or locals would talk about and suggest that focus on the roots of the city and the ones which are even tradional.

This might be a good idea if you have me to spare as there is a lot of places to see and visit such as the Bastakiya Quarter, Deira Fish market, The Dubai Museum, The Heritage and Diving Village, The Old Souq, Perfume Souq, the Spice Souq and the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding.

So if you are in Dubai or vising Dubai shortly, we have a suggeson for you which is both tradional and local; ride and go on an Abra. Old Dubai or Deira and Bur Dubai sides outline the famous Dubai Creek, and one of the best ways to see the Creek is by Abra, which is a small motorised wooden boat taxi. They can hold upto 20 people in one trip and offer the cheapest and fastest way to cross the Creek between Deira and Bur Dubai. It is one of the best ways to see the Creek as well as to beat rush hour traffic. There are four main staons, two on the Northern side of Deira and two on the Southern side of Bur Dubai. The trips are fast and by fast we mean less than 10 minutes and costs a fil. The main routes, Route 1 which is from the Deira

If you want a personalised trip just show up to the staon wait for an abra and speak to the driver, he will give you suggesons accordingly. It might approximately be 100AED for an hour.

There are more than 150 boats on the creek at any given me. It bearly takes a few minutes between departures but should you have to wait, there are plenty of lile outlets selling hot bites to eat and a cup of karak (local tea) to drink. While trying the abra you can also get a feel for the snacks residents eat while on the go. The best me to visit the places on the creek might be during day me to ensure the places are open shopping, however for an unforgeable scenic experience the night me is best when the creek is lit up in all its glory. KUNAFA THE CREAMY, SUGARY TREAT

I

f you are looking out for a sugary treat in Dubai, what can be beer than a kunafa? Kunafa, a squishy delectable Palesnian dessert, is served as a delicacy to celebrate any fesvity in the Arab world. This lip-smacking dessert features a base and top layer, which is either made from vermicelli noodles, shredded filo, semolina, or shredded wheat. Between these layers is a generous spread of cloed cream or luscious cheese with fruits and nuts spread all over. It is baked unl golden brown and steeped in a thick syrup of honey or is sugar-flavoured with date, orange blossoms, or rose. It gets the final touch with pistachios and nuts sprinkled over. The very first traces of kunafas can be traced back to the countries of the Ooman Empire, Caucasus, and the Middle East. Kunafas are mainly of three types – Khishnah, Na’ama and Mhayara – based on the dough, the filling and syrup used to prepare it. Again, as you move from Turkey to Palesne to Iran or Greece, the kunafa varies slightly depending on the palate of the people. But almost anywhere you go, the middle layer usually remains so and creamy while the outer layers are crunchy.Legend has it that kunafa

was first prepared to saate the voracious appetes of the princes during Ramadan. This dessert, rich in nutrients, had a filling effect that helped them observe their fast without hunger pangs. Another version of the story claims that the Famids, a Shia community, introduced this delicacy as a part of their tradion. To binge on this ethnic delight, Dubai offers you a number of places that specialise in kunafas. You can find scrumpous kunafas within AED 30 at Feras Aldeyafa Sweets, Barsha 1, Zaroob, Trade Center Area, Markee, Al Safa, Mezza House, Downtown Dubai, Big Chef’s Menu, Al Safa, Shaikh Al Mandi, Al Barsha 1, Sukur House of Desserts, Cluster Q, Hey Sugar Bakeshop, Jumeirah Beach Road, Bait Al Kanafa Restaurant, Deira and Al Shami Restaurant, Deira. Places like Logma, Al Safa, Kaan Turkish Cuisine and Fine Art, Umm Suqeim, Reem Al Bawadi, Dubai Marina, and AyamEleez, Umm Sequim serve kunafas at higher rates. To try some amazing variaons of the tradional kunafa, head to places like Rice Creamery, City Walk – Unit 17, Al Safa Road, Turkish Village Restaurant - Jumeirah 1, Amassena, Jumeirah Beach Road, Home Bakery, Al Wasl Road or Milas, Downtown Dubai.

MEDWAKH

THE ARABIC CIGAR PIPES

T

oday, the lure of inhaling the tobacco smoke is known by many names across the world some of which are fumeur, rauchen, fumo, kitsuen, rook, fumador, tadkhin, yarikkada, de fumar.Annals of the History tell us that the habit originated thousands of years ago, as far back as 500 BC. While modern smoking is widespread through cigarees, connoisseurs yearning for a taste of the old, prefer the tradional forms of smoking. Medwakhs, the Arabic cigar pipes, find a pride of place along with the nave hookahs and shishas in the Middle Eastern world. From the common acrylic to robust metal to tradional wood to exoc camel bone, Medwakhsare made from different materials. Even the designs are named quite interesngly, with terms such as beetle’s juice, frog in a blender, ger’s paw, Turkish falcon, desert storm and more. A Medwakh piece usually comes in a cloth carrying case and includes a filter to be put at the end of the pipe; some newer models come with an in-line filter to be inserted inside. The tobacco that is used in the cigar pipe is called “Dokha” of “Dook”; it is a blend of finely shredded tobacco, herbs, spices, barks, flowers and leaves. Unlike

the tobacco used in the modern day cigarees, Dokha is not arficially steam-cured. Naturally cured in the arid and hot desert climate, it retains a high degree of flavour and freshness. When you become the proud owner of a Medwakh pipe, there are quite a few accessories that you would do well to buy alongside. The first would be a “Chanta”, a Dokha container that allows you to carry around a day’s requirement of the tobacco, between 3 to 7 grams. Chantas are usually made of a metal like brass or aluminium, while the exoc ones are made of wood and camel bone. Next would be a Chanta funnel to easily fill up your Medwakh with Dhoka from the Chanta. The funnel also helps when you are blending different Dhokas from different Chantas. Other paraphernalia includes a reaming rod, bowl spade, and a tamping tool; you could find all three in a single mul-tool. Al Jazira atMall of the Emirates, Bin Khumairy at Al-Minah besides Capital Hotel, Rabsha in Satwa, near thebus staon and Yousef Ridha, behind Abu Hail Centre are some of the best places in Dubai to get yourself a Medwakh and all its addional equipment.
