DUBAI SUMMER

GETAWAY ON A BUDGET

D

ubai has always been a dream destination for many but the kind of glitz and glam associated with this enticing land, often makes it look pricy enough only for the well-heeled. In truth however, there are innumerable choices for the budget traveller in Dubai -all you need to do is explore a little! Even on a strict budget, you can enjoy the waves splashing against your feet at the Burj Beach, which has a free entry. The same goes for Al Mamzar Beach Park with aordable food joints, priced at AED 5 per entry. For some extra fun in the water, the water park - Dreamland Aqua park is the right place at AED 135 for adults and AED 85 for kids. Those preferring rides and amusement can hit parks like Safa Park, Mushrif Park and Creek Park along with Al Nasr that has ice skating too.

JULY 2016 | 09

Another place to enjoy could be the zoo - Al Ain Wildlife Park charges just AED 15 for adults and AED 5 for kids; after all, a zoo is always hours and hours of fun. Feeding a turtle at the Mina A’Salam, Madinat Jumeirah or an Armadillo at Posh Paws are some other interesting options you could consider. The Al Bastakiya Quarter, Old Dubai houses many museums and art galleries that have free entry. Dubai Museum, forts like Burj Nahar, Deira, Naif Fort, and Al Fahidi Fort are good choices for the budget tourist. One of the best things to do is to take an Abra ride - a traditional wooden boat for AED 2 from Old Souk or Bur Dubai Abra stations. When it comes to desert safaris, an

afternoon to evening trip is best, with a roller coaster ride in the sand dunes, camel watching and a scrumptious dinner for a minimum of AED 200. If you wish to stay indoors, go rock climbing at Play Mania, Mirdiff City Centre and Adventure HQ, Sheikh Zayad Road where a half hour climb costs AED 50; head for bowling at Switch Bowling, Ibn Battuta and Bowling Centre, Sheikh Zayad Road, which charge around AED 10 for a game or AED 60 per hour. Chill out for two hours at Dubai Ice Ring, Dubai mall for just AED 55. As we said earlier, having fun in Dubai doesn’t always have to mean spending a lot of dirhams – you just need to look for all the right places.

Arabic is the national language of UAE but it’s very easy to communicate and navigate in Dubai without any major language barriers. Government departments, taxi drivers, store staff and hotel workers are very well versed in English, making traversing Dubai almost as easy as in an Englishspeaking home country. There is also a large expat population from all corners of the globe and as a result, a wide variety of languages is understood. However, trying to master a few basic phrases in Arabic is a nice way to show respect to local culture and traditions.

• Do not distract those who are praying, or walk in front of them. • Do not enter the mosque unless on a guided tour (Non Muslims & Ladies • Please remove shoes before entering a mosque. • Women should carry scarves to cover their heads • Do not offer a handshake to an Emirati of an opposite gender. • Photography of Emirati women is not permitted. • Showing of strong emotion in public, even if in a legal relationship, is not accepted. • Revealing dress in public and in family places is looked upon as a sign of disrespect. • Consumption/possession of drugs is prohibited and can be penalised by life imprisonment.

Well, People by Crystal are nestled at the top of the pyramid. It features an amazing 360-degree panoramic view of the Dubai skyline including the extravagant metropolis, its glittering skyscrapers, desert, and sea. The reason for this is because it located inside a glass pyramid boasting an array of lighting effects which shows off its impressive architecture comprising of bars and columns. Although the club can accommodate up to 1,200 people, we definitely suggest making a reservation, to avoid any disappointment. Please also remember that as an independent venue, People by Crystal's management reserve the right of admission. Dubai is a shopper’s paradise. From some of the world’s most amazing malls, including the world’s largest shopping space, to the city’s atmospheric souks where traditional local commerce comes alive, the choice is endless. Spend some time in the modern bazaars of Souk Al Bahar and Souk Madinat Jumeirah and explore corridors filled with treasures and trinkets to take home as a fitting reminder of your time in Dubai. Or pay a visit to the Gold & Diamond Park where a shimmering selection of jewellery awaits. There is something to suit all shopping tastes in this eclectic city. Determine a maximum price that you are willing to pay from the outset and stick to it. If the vendor refuses to budge on price, look elsewhere to see if another retailer stocks the same item. The chances are that they could be more accommodating. Try to purchase as many items as possible from the same vendor as you are more likely to get a good discount this way. Be friendly and light-hearted, bargaining is best treated as a game and if it looks like you aren’t going to achieve your desired result then justwalk away. Take time to browse rather than purchasing on impulse. Often the best deals are to be had further inside the markets where the shops are less visible and receive less custom. Carry cash and small bills to Flea markets as credit/ debit cards won’t usually be accepted. Also carry a pair of sunglasses and some water to stay hydrated in the hot sun as you browse.

T

he Middle East is famous for many things. When you think of the Middle East you think of exotic flavours, breathtaking landscapes of endless desert, luxury settings and indulgence, impressive development. Zooming in on food, we think of the spices and the fusion of tastes that stay with us long after our travels have ended. There are a few must-dos when you visit each region or country and while in Dubai you should if you can, try Shisha. You might already be familiar with Shisha, by the name of narghile, water pipe, hookah or hubble bubble smoking. Its origins are for sure from Arabia and certain areas of Asia. Shisha is a social thing to do, friends and even family gather together and spend countless minutes and sometimes hours talking and chatting. Shisha includes sweet fruit or molasses sugar, which makes the entire experience more aromatic. Favourite flavourings include apple, mint apple, grape, mint, strawberry and rose. There are many shisha cafes in Dubai, some are full of guys while other cafes have a comfortable mixture of both guys and girls of all ages. But some that we suggest are the Bo House Café, located in Jumeirah Beach Residence (+971 44298655, www.bohousecafe.com). This chic café can be your home away from home, as it

features home cooked hearty meals and of course shisha.
