According to LEDinside, market for LED light bulbs is estimated to exceed $3 billion by 2012, almost quadrupling from that of 2009, an outstanding growth for LED light bulbs. Market value for a wide variety of LED lighting applications are estimated at $2.2 billion in 2011, an approximate 23% annual growth rate compared to $1.8 billion in 2010. The majority of growth is contributed from commercial and architectural lighting. In terms of the general lighting market, the price difference between LEDs used in indoor lighting and traditional lamps is still significant, hindering the willingness of consumers to switch.

Japan, a market with large LED lighting demands is an iconic example; their government imposed a subsidy called “Eco-Point,� aiming to encourage ener g y - s aving household appliances. T he outcome was a huge success in 2010 and 2011.

The Eco-Point obtained from buying energysaving appliance can be used to exchange free LED bulbs, which also indirectly stimulated the LED market.

Moreover, governments across the globe are granting subsidies to businesses and households for using energy-efficient LED lamps, in fact, many countries are trying to ban incandescent bulbs by 2012. It is estimated demand for LED light bulbs will increase drastically approaching 2012.

Governments try to standardize the requirements for LED light bulbs. With standards varied from country to country, it is important to take both the local and international requirements into account. Also, the government has forbidden manufacturing, selling and importing halogen lamps with luminous efficacies lower than the benchmark.

European Union: it started forbidding the use of 100W incandescent lights (type C) since 2009; it started forbidding the use of 65W incandescent light bulbs since 2010 and will forbid selling 60W incandescent light bulbs since September, 2011; it will forbid selling 40W and 25W incandescent light bulbs since September, 2012 and only light bulbs with luminous efficacies higher than that of type D light bulb are allowed to be sold. European Union plans to fully replace incandescent light bulbs by 2015 and only light bulbs with luminous efficacies higher than that of type B light bulb are allowed to be sold by 2016.

Cuba: the Cuba-Jamaica Compact Fluorescent Lamp Project has been launched in 2006 and resumed on March 26th, 2011. It is expected to benefit 30 communities and increase the amount of energy-saving lights in Cuba from 2.80 million to 2.96 million.

The penetration rate of LED products is expected to reach a considerable level in the next 2 to 5 years, the CAGR of HB LED market 2011~2015 is 16%. GE Scientists Enable All-LED Rooms with New LED Edge Lighting Fixtures The new GE LED fixtures will be available as ceiling troffers and suspended fixtures that will appear to float in thin air through a dramatically framed light source. Each fixture will feature highquality transparent or opaque light panels coupled with Rambus MicroLens technology that allows lighting designers to do more with the fixture’s light output. Through the use of proprietary optical modeling software and design techniques, the MicroLens “ray-angle control pattern” can be customized to efficiently spread light across the entire lighting surface or focus the light in specific locations.

The LED technology and optics of the new fixtures work in tandem to eliminate the hot spots common among fluorescent options.

Each fixture will deliver uniform, bright light—both diffuse and directional—in a thin design that allows for a clean appearance. The controlled contrast functionality of the new GE fixtures will allow a user to enhance a room’s overall aesthetic.

GE’s family of LED edge lighting ceiling troffer fixtures becomes available late 2011, while GE’s suspended European-inspired LED edge lighting fixtures are expected to arrive on the scene the first half of 2012.

Osram's Brilliant-Mix LED concept for warm white good light

This new LED concept is backed by in-depth OSRAM know-how in terms of the high-power OSLON SSL LED, expertise in color mixing and control and project-specific customer support.

The main applications for the new concept include high-quality lighting solutions for residential and commercial premises such as shops and offices. The high quality of the light is based on the combination of a pleasant warm tone and high color rendering properties. The high CRI ensures that colors and skin tones appear in artificial light as natural as they do in normal daylight. Test colors R9 (saturated red) and R13 (skin colors) are crucial for the natural rendering of red and skin tones.

With CRIs of 78 and 98 respectively they have much higher values than most conventional light sources. The typical value for the general color rendering index Ra (averaged sum of test colors R1 to R8) is 92 at a color temperature of 2700K. The luminous efficacy is also exceptionally high at more than 110 lm/W. For a comparable color temperature and comparable CRI that is 30 percent higher than warm white LEDs that produce white light using the principle of phosphor conversion. Even in a retrofit lamp system this concept can achieve 100 lm/W at system level.

OSLON SSL LEDs in EQ-White and Amber are used in the “Brilliant Mix” concept. Measuring just 3 mm x 3 mm, these LEDs are among the smallest feel-in the 1 W class and can be closely clustered. This makes color mixing easier and also improves the optical design at system level.

A new LED concept from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors achieves 30 percent greater luminous efficacy with a high color rendering index Warm white light with a high luminous efficacy (110 lm/W) and a color rendering index (CRI) of more than 90 are the result of the new “Brilliant-Mix” concept from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors.

The intelligent color mix based on powerful OSLON SSL LEDs in EQWhite and Amber covers a broad white spectrum from 2700 to 4000 K. Depending on the required luminous flux, a different number of these LEDs can be combined to produce warm white feel-good light of high quality that will set new standards in general illumination applications.

Luminous flux improvement accelerates the popularization of the LED lighting market. Targeting at the LED light bulbs (450-485lm) to replace the 40W incandescent light bulbs, LEDinside conducted a comprehensive price survey. The survey showed that the price of LED light bulbs has plummeted by 55% from March, 2010 to June, 2011; the average retail price dropped to USD 24 (USD 52/Klm). The continuous downtrend of LED light bulb prices is expected to increase the demand for LED applications.

Based on LEDinside’s survey, the LED light bulb price has dropped considerably. For example, the retail prices of LED light bulbs in Japan were about USD 40 in 2010, and now, the prices are at a record low of USD 18, a huge drop of 35% in 2Q10. Although the downtrend became less drastic in 3Q10 and 4Q10, the prices still suffered a double-digit setback. On the other hand, the prices merely dropped by 3% in 1Q11 and then remained comparatively stable in 2Q11 due to effects of the Japan earthquake.

According to LEDinside, the downtrend caused the LED light bulb price to drop from USD 83/ Klm in 2010 to USD 52/Klm at this stage. However, the initial cost of the LED light bulbs is still much higher than that of general light bulbs, so it is still too soon to say whether LED light can fully replace the latter.

The price downtrend helps stimulate the LED light bulb market growth Moreover, sales of LED light bulb surpassed that of incandescent light bulbs in June in Japan.

South Korean light bulb makers’ pricing strategy and the business strategies of Philips, Osram, GE and other major manufacturers in the global light bulb market have become cleaner. In light of the vast range of standard deviation among different manufacturer’s products, LEDinside points out that the choice of LED light bulbs for the sake of energy saving should base on not only whether it is an adequate replacement for 40W incandescent light bulb but also its luminous flux.

Rating

The luminous efficacy of traditional light sources like incandescent bulbs is approximately 1112 l/W. In other words, one 40W incandescent bulb should have a luminosity of at least 450lm.

In areas such as United States, Europe and Japan, the substitution of traditional light sources with LED illumination must meet certain requirements, one of which is that the luminosity of LED bulbs has to be between 450 and 485lm. Therefore, a survey of LED bulbs currently on the market reveals, without much surprise, that advertisements for many products state that they can replace traditional 40W bulbs. However, closer inspection of product specifications reveals that recognized standards are not uniformed, as products with luminosities ranging from 485-340lm can be found.

Some manufacturers believe that due to the directivity of LED luminous flux, in certain situations, for instance in desk lamps with limited illumination radius, LED bulbs rated at 300 or so lm are acceptable replacements for 40W incandescent bulbs.

The luminosity requirements for LED bulbs replacing 40W incandescent bulbs vary significantly among different brands and products; LEDinside surveyed the luminosity specifications of representative LED bulb manufacturers worldwide, with the following findings: For European and American lighting manufacturers like Philips and GE, Philips’ 8W Master LEDbulb and GE’s 8W Model No. 62180 LED bulb met this requirement with luminous flux of 470 lm and 450 lm, respectively. For Japanese manufacturers, known for their diligence and meticulous work, both Toshiba’s 7.2W LDA7L and Sharp’s 7.8W DL-LA42L met the 485 lm standard, complying with Japan Electric Lamp Manufacturers Association’s guideline specifications. For LG, its 7.5W LED bulb (model no. LB08D830L0A) also met this lm standard.

According to LEDinside, a research division of TrendForce, the global market value of highbrightness LED in 2011 is estimated at a total of USD 9 billion instead of USD 10.6 billion as previously forecasted, with a mere annual increase of 8%. Contributing factors include: backlight market’s weak demand, and drastic plummeting LED’s average selling price, which resulted in over supply in the LED market.

2011 LED Backlight Annual Output Value Exhibits Decline Compared to 2010 According to TrendForce, despite the fact that the High-Brightness LED Backlight market has increased slightly in 2011, the LED market value for the TV backlight application reached USD 1.4 billion, with an 18% YoY decrease. The trend can be attributed to the enhanced light guide technology, resulting in a considerable reduction in the LED usage volume for the TV backlight. As for the 42- inch TV specification, when Samsung launched its LED TVs in 2009, 360 LEDs were needed, but in 2011, the number averages about 130 for standard LED TVs and 100 for the entry level LED TV model. The technology advancement has largely compromised LED usage for the TV backlight application.

Moreover, the unfavorable end-market sales contribute to the rapid downturn in LED price. As a result, despite the surging LED penetration rate for the TV application, market value still suffers a setback.

In 2012, South Korean panel manufacturers plan to launch their entry level LED panels, in the hope of reducing cost and propelling sales. Such a move will further increase the LED penetration rate, but it will also cause the LED usage volume to drop another 20-30%.

Few Taiwanese Manufacturers Benefit from Tablet PC Fever Brand vendors are increasingly requiring higher panel resolution for tablet PCs; in 2011 the amount of LED usage volume per tablet PC averages 36-42, but the LED usage volume may double in 2012.

Although the tablet PC shipment will likely exceed 50 million units in 2011, but Apple iPad and iPad 2 account for most of them. Currently, since Apple’s LED backlight demand is mainly supplied by Japanese manufacturers, few Taiwanese makers benefit from the tablet PC fever.

Notebook LED Demand to Be Determined, Competition Heightened The requirements for thin and light products are also expected to raise demand for ultra slim LED backlight modules and will hopefully invigorate the stagnant LED backlight market. However, as ultrabook production volume will be limited in the beginning, and traditional notebook shipments have been reduced due to the popularity of tablet PC, ultrabooks will be unable to increase LED backlight demand in the short run. Nevertheless, as ultrabooks require thin panels and power efficiency, demand for backlight modules with 0.8t or 0.8LV side view LED is expected to increase.

Eventually, they will replace the 3014 package type used by traditional notebooks, and raise LED product ASPs. Ultrabook s have raised the bar in LED backlight competition with the use of more 0.8t and 0.8LV low voltage LED produc t s. In the future, LED produc t development will advance towards even thinner form factor. Thus, Japanese LED manufacturers in the early and mid-market stage are getting a head start on the LED backlight market.

Nichia and TG have both increased shipments of LED backlight products for ultrabooks.

LEDinside predicts, "In the short term, the effect of ultrabooks on the LED market is not likely to be significant, but will increase as ultrabook penetration rate increases. By 2015, LEDs used in ultrabooks will account for 30% of total notebook LED applications." As LED specifications continue to improve, the average number of LEDs used in each unit will decrease. As for whether or not overall notebook LED demand will help the LED backlight market, only time will tell.

Incandescent Light Bulb Ban from 2012 May Trigger Potential LED Lighting Market Growth In light of the weak backlight demand, the lighting market becomes the new source of revenue that underpins LED makers. For example, the electricity rationing in Japan has increased energy-saving awareness and demand for LED, and LED makers that manage to break into the supply chain of the Japanese lighting market are able to deliver solid revenues.

For instance, Roadmap for China Abolishing Incandescent Lamps (draft), recently published by The National Development and Reform Commission, proposes that the sales and imports of regular incandescent light bulbs will be prohibited from October 1st, 2012. Chinese LED Chip Makers Drastically Modify Expansion Plan Due to Weak End-Market Demand Due to of the subsidy policies enacted by local governments in 2010, Chinese LED chip makers planned to expand their capacity and increase the amount of MOCVD equipment to target at the prospects of the LED lighting market in 2011. However, affected by the uncertain end-market demand of the LED industry in 2011, the inventory levels of LED products continue to rise. As a result, LED manufacturers have put their purchases of MOCVD equipment on hold.

According to the research by LEDinside, first tier Chinese LED chip makers have begun the construction of their new sales centers on sites that were originally designated for production expansions. They have also asked the MOCVD equipment makers to delay the delivery of their orders, which adds uncertainty to the chip supply in China in 2H11.

On the other hand, the second tier Chinese LED chip makers may have to terminate their expansion plans and even face the possibility of going out of business due to the lack of professional experts and MOCVD equipment.

Shanghai In 2010 World Expo, a new concept was launched that LED will keep close to city life in future. Moreover, many high-end products emerged with proprietary intellectual property rights, for instance, LiAlO2 and ZnO crystal growth processes representing key technical breakthroughs. Shanghai LED industrialization base has now taken Zhangjiang High Tech Park as its key technical development center.

Being the economic and trade center of China, Shanghai has attracted major LED light manufacturers to come to establish their R&D centers or labs, for example, GE has set up a conventional lighting and LED lab in Shanghai. Shanghai’s LED industry supply chain is thus distinguished from the manufacturing model in other regions as technology development receives more attention here. Moreover, local manufacturers have forged long-term partnerships with international giants through strategic alliances so the latest technology can be introduced as soon as possible, keeping chip, package or lighting technologies fast geared to international standards. In terms of LED package, there are many package manufacturers with advanced technologies in Zhejiang province, including Zhongzhou, Hangke and Sunpu. The monthly package capacity of the region is maintained between 200KK and 300KK. With the support and encouragement of government policies, although the visibility of LED lighting industry in the first two quarters of 2011 did not appear high, local manufacturers are continuing production expansions, seemingly unaffected by the sluggish macro-environment. In light of lighting applications, a few manufacturers such as Yancon Lighting, Ningbo Liaoyuan Lighting and Focused Photonics have both technology and market. Regarding power management and control chips for LED lighting fixtures, despite of the short period of the overall development, the industry base is fairly significant with famous makers like Moons, China Resources Powertech and Bright Power Semiconductor.

Manufacturers in Guangdong province cover from upstream wafers and chips to downstream package and lighting fixture applications, including the production of LED MOCVD equipment. Their scale and technology are key industry indicators in mainland China. With famous package makers like Foshan Nationstar, Guangzhou Honglitronic, Shenzhen Refond, Guangdong alone has reached 65%-70% of China’s total package capacity. Guangdong two established lighting fixture manufacturers (Jiangmen and Foshan) in addition to local lighting brands such as Kingsun, Yajiang, Foshan and NVC, building up the most developed LED light industry supply chain in mainland China. As for LED equipment, the key LED wafer equipment, co-developed by the Semiconductor Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Guangdong Industrial Technology Research Institute, is possible to begin massproduction by the end of 2011.

Jiangsu Province

With the flourishing and diversified LED businesses in the region, local governments are gradually passing more regulations favoring the LED lighting industry and have established National Key Laboratory of Semiconductor Optoelectronics for Product Testing. LED Exhibition and Trade Center Project has also been launched. The purpose is to turn the regional LED industry into an international procurement platform for green light sources. LED lighting industry, appeals to environmentalfriendliness, has virtually became the best breakthrough point in Guangdong’ s strategic industry development.

There were a great number of package makers before 2010, most notably some Taiwanese-invested makers such as Suzhou Everlight and Liteon.

Regrettably, they are lack of researching and developing strengths with only capability to produce LED package. Meanwhile, Chinese-invested makers were represented by Jiangsu Wenrun Optoelectronic. The LED upstream strength has been gradually increasing since 2010. It is expected that apart from the two Taiwanese-invested wafer fabs (Canyang Optoelectronics and Jingpin Opto), Chinese-invested manufacturers will also have MOCVDs ready between 2010 and 2013 and achieve mass production, to name a few, the state-controlled Yangzhou Zhongke Semiconductor Lighting Center, which is co-invested by New Light Source Technology Development and Semiconductor Institutes, Chinese Academy of Sciences as well as Longyao Opto invested by Shanghai Rainbow Optoelectronics Materials.

MO Source used to come mainly from Akzo Nobel, Dow Chemical, SAFC, Sumitomo, making it the weakest point in Chinese LED supply chain.

However, having become the sole and independent MO Source supplier in China, Nata Optoelectronic Material not only supplies to China’s LED industry but has also further entered into international markets including Taiwan, South Korea, the USA and Japan. Current annual capacity of the company is 35k to 55k tons. Capacity expansion plan depends on the future demand with the goal of 300k tons a year.

Jiangxi Province Over several years of development, Nanchang National Semiconductor Lighting Project Industrialization Base in Jiangxi Province has made great progress in LED technology and industrialization. Led by Nanchang, a relatively complete industry chain has been established along with a remarkable industrial cluster gathering quite a few leading manufacturers in LED industry.

Nanchang base has taken its initial shape, with upstream wafers technically supported by Nanchang University and midstream chipmakers like Lianovation. Nevertheless, the base lacks industry-support capacity, falling behind other national semiconductor lighting bases; the comprehensive competitiveness of the city has yet to be shaped and lacking clusters of LED industry players. With Lianovation also in the downstream, although Jiangxi is strong in upstream wafer materials R&D and midstream chip production, it is rather weak in technology of LED application products especially the technology of LED light sources, light fixtures as well as the enterprise scale. Thus the mass production capacity is not yet ready in Jiangxi. Most application products belong to mid or low-end categories with little added values.

Fujian Province LED industry in Fujian province is basically centered at Xiamen National Semiconductor Project Lighting Industrialization Base surrounded by cities like Fuzhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou, Zhangzhou. Xiamen San’an and Xiamen Changelight, are both leading chip makers in mainland China.

San’an is already China’s largest wafer and chip producer as well as its HB-LED wafer and chip industrialization base, the total production is approximating to over 50% of national production. In the area of LED package, Xiamen Hualian Electronics keeps a leading role in terms of package quality. With regards to lighting applications, Xiamen Topstar and GE co-invested a state-controlled company to specialize in the development of LED lights, phosphor, LED lighting fixtures and LED light source products.

Local government shows clear support towards the LED industry. It is expected that subsidies will be in effect between 2011 and 2015 to further promote the development of LED lighting industry, aiming to establish a complete ecosystem in Xiamen, Quanzhou and Zhangzhou.

The high prices are the critical factor in propelling the development of LED lighting. For example, if a 7W LED light bulb is used for eight hours a day for a month (31 days), it can save 8 kwh compared to using an 40W incandescent light bulb. With the electricity prices of EU-27, USD 2 can be saved every month by adopting an LED light bulb instead of an incandescent one; more money can be saved by using LED light bulb in the outdoor and commercial lighting sectors due to the higher electricity consumptions of incandescent light bulbs. Therefore, the strength of LED in energy conservation is one of the key factors that stimulate LED’s popularity in Europe.

Centering around the creation of lighting atmosphere, the lighting designs in most of the European cities seem dim, which embodies the essential design concept of Europe: the lighting focuses on creating certain atmosphere and mood instead of the brightness and amount of lights. In addition, cultures and traditions play an important role in lighting of European countries. For example, Lyon, a city of France which is renowned for the splendid lighting in the cities, turns the lighting into a trademark of the city.

The French government invests $600,000 Euro every year in public lighting infrastructure and the annual Fête des Lumières (Festival of Lights) in Lyon which attracted over one million visitors worldwide yearly. Moreover, the fact that tourism is an integral part of Europe’s economy, the city of Lyon also founded Lighting Urban Community International Association (LUCI) which is comprised of 63 cities. The inefficient 60 watt light bulbs are being replaced by compact fluorescent light bulbs ( CFLs ) and light emitting diode lamps ( LEDs ). Halogen lights will remain on the shelves but are only marginally more efficient than incandescent bulbs.

Europeans will be able to choose lamps which are at least 75% more efficient than old light bulbs and last seven times longer.

According to Greenpeace EU energy policy advisor Frauke Thies, LED light sources last the longest and can provide up to 90% saving compared to incandescent lamps. CFLs contain small amounts of mercury and should therefore be properly recycled. Manufacturers running take-back schemes report a collection rate of about 30%. LED Price Trend:TV Backlight Suffered Over 10% Drop in 2Q11; Downturn Expected to Continue in 3Q11 According to the latest price survey by LEDinside, a research division of TrendForce, due to weak LED demand in 2Q11, the prices of TV backlight (5630) and high-power LED continue to drop. As for the outlook in 3Q11, the downturn of TV backlight (5630) will most likely continue. In addition, because of the drastic plummet in 1H11, the prices of high-power LED see a mild drop in the near term.

Review of LED Price in 2011 The LED price drops of different large-size panels have varied: the LED price of TV backlight applications (5630) plunged 10 to 15% while the LED price of NB/MNT applications merely dropped 3 to 5% due to its mature technology and the fact that the price has hit the bottom over the past two years. On the other hand, the weak demand has dampened the overall mobile phone sales, which in turn result in a considerable setback in LED demand and an 8% to 10% price decline. As for the high-power LED of lighting applications, affected by the inventory adjustment, the price suffered a 10 to 15% decrease.

Increasing Players in TV Backlight Sector Intensify Price Competition On account of the horrid sales of LCD TV in 2Q11, despite the price cutting strategy, no signs of demand rebound have caused the price of 5630 to drop by 10 to 15% in 2Q11.

As for 3Q11, because of low demand for TV backlight and industry-wide the price cut, the price of 5630 is expected to plummet over 10%.

The LED Price of NB and Tablet Applications is Relatively Stable The specifications of LED backlight products have become more advanced in the NB, monitor, and mobile device applications. However, since 3014 LED could be adopted in the lighting applications, the price drop in 2Q11 was limited despite the weak demand in NB market.

As for tablet backlight applications, the mainstream specification is low-voltage LED (0.8t LV). Due to the limited players in the sector, the price remained relatively stable.

Due to Brightness Enhancement and Inventory Adjustment, Lighting Application Price Continued to decrease in 2Q11 In addition, LED lighting market demand is mainly underpinned by a few orders from commercial lighting and interior lighting sector, lack of subsidy policy causes a considerable decline in high-power LED price. Moreover, due to factors such as the increasing LED brightness by American and European major makers and the high inventory level, most of the manufacturers are forced to adopt the low-price strategy to propel sales.

According to LEDinside, the price of high-power LED in 2Q11 continued to decrease and dropped by 10%~15%; LED makers offered their major clients with even lower prices. As for the outlook in 3Q11, the pressure of lowering the price remains unchanged. Due to the steep price drop in 1H11, the high-power LED price is expected to see a mild drop in 2H11.

Perspectives from LEDinside In light of that the LED backlight shipment in 1H11 fell short of expectation, products such as 5630 and 3014, which were originally adopted in backlight applications, are now adopted in lighting applications. In addition, many light product makers have replaced high-power LED with mid and low-power LED in order to reduce cost. With the weak demand in the backlight market, LED makers are expected to shift their focus to LED lighting application sector.

Based on LEDinside’s observation, the current demands are mainly from Chinese and Japanese lighting markets. The LED demand in Japan has grown considerably due to the energy-saving policy after the earthquake: the penetration rate of LED light bulb has exceeded 30% in 2Q11. With the effect of the policy mitigated, further observation of the demand in 3Q11 is necessary.

With 2012 Olympics in the UK and the ban of incandescent light bulbs, it is estimated that the demand of LED module and LED lighting fixture might increase in the European market.

WitsView suggested that 9.7-inch and 10.1-inch products will remain mainstream with around 85% of market share in the coming few years due to customers’ preference of Tablet PC with large screen. On the other hand, 7-inch Tablet PC could become a product with long term sales potential due to its unique cost advantage and size segmentation.

According to R&D Director Chiu Yu-Pin of WitsView, the major competitiveness of 7-inch product comes from the cost as compared to 9.7-inch or 10.1-inch products. LCD panel and touch panel module account for around 40% of the cost of Tablet PC. There is a 20%~30% difference in the costs of these two key components between 7-inch and 10.1-inch products, which means that the unit cost of 7-inch Tablet PC is at least 10% lower than 10.1-inch Tablet PC. Therefore, it can be suitable for products of the 7-inch size or smaller to be promoted as low-cost Tablet PC to attract more consumers and expand market size for Tablet PC. In addition to changing the consumer habits for electronic products, the rise of smart phones and Tablet PCs also restarted the pursuits of new technology, new process and new investment in the matured panel industry. As indicated by WitsView, the current design trend of mobile device, the control over FFS (fringe field switching) yield and the devotion to the development of LTPS(low temperature poly-silicon) among panel makers will become the keys for conquering new territories in the market of mobile device panel in the next one or two years.

Mr. Chiou, believes that it is indisputable that FFS has become the mainstream wide viewing angle technology for mobile device panels. However, compared to the production yield of over 90% for large-sized panel, currently the yield of FFS wide viewing angle panel remains around 60~70%. The yield is equivalent to the cost. In order to utilize the advantage of FFS technology, panel makers must try to locate key customers and secure orders, gradually improve production process through stable capacity expansion, and reduce the time needed for yield enhancement such that they can secure the leading position of cost competition as soon as possible. In short, the focus on FFS technology in the industry must be raised the bar for better yield rate instead of only possessing the technology.

As for maintaining mid-to-long term competitive edges of panel makers, based on WitsView’s observation, the control over low temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) process will be another important indicator. Due to the popularity of high resolution panel of Apple iPhone 4 with the so-called “retina” technology, it has been predicted that new generation of iPad product adopting resolution as high as 260 ppi (pixel per inch) will be introduced as early as Q4 this year.

It is expected that non-Apple brands will respond with products of comparable or superior specifications and start a new wave of resolution war. Facing this climbing demand for high resolution panels, tradition amorphous silicon (A-Si) process may be insufficient. Market demand for LTPS process will grow significantly such that this could be the entry barrier in the future for panel makers to penetrate the market of mid-to-high end Tablet PCs. Mr. Chiou also pointed out that there are two major entry barriers of investment and technology behind LTPS. As for the capital requirement of new investment, it can certainly be a heavy burden for current panel makers with poor profitability. As for the technology, the competitiveness of Japanese panel makers has been diminishing because they failed to keep up with the pace of capacity expansions. However, the rise of LTPS process has provided Japanese makers with solid technology foundations (such as Sharp and Hitachi) with a great opportunity to get back to the mainstream market. Relatively speaking, this also indicates that in addition to the price and quantity threats from Korean makers, Taiwanese makers must again face the challenges from Japanese makers with technology advantages in the process of fighting for the market of mobile device panels.

Owing to mobile devices, the panel industry has been revived. Yet with the challenges of technology development, process yield, and investment strength, there could be a re-shuffle of competitiveness and market shares among panel makers. WitsView suggested that even with existing LTPS mass production capabilities among Taiwanese panel makers, the product size must be enlarged for Tablet PC application in order to prepare in advance for the predicted growing demand for high resolution Tablet PC panel in 2012.

Tablet PCs Demand to improve LED chip specification LEDinside indicated that LED application requirement for Tablet PC has improved, and average brightness specification has increased by over 20 percent. Additionally, LED shipment grew, too. It is estimated that LED shipment will rise to 1.3 billion in 2011 from 380 million in 2010, around 3.5 times in growth rate.

Furthermore, touch panel used in most Tablet PCs has lower transmissivity. However, overall requirement for backlight brightness increases, hence, brightness specification of LEDs has to increase in order to meet the market demand.

In terms of LED specification requirement, according to LEDinside, LED luminous intensity should be over 2,400 mcd to be adopted in Tablet PCs, which means average brightness specification should be 20 percent higher than before.

In terms of LED shipment, around 20 -28 LED units are used in a Tablet PC (Tablet PCs with Android and iPad). LEDinside indicated that LED shipment (applied in Tablet PCs) in 2010 was around 380 million. As this market continues to grow, LEDinside estimated that LED shipment will rise to 1300 million in 2011, and growth rate will reach 3.5 times. This will certainly benefit the LED industry in Taiwan, Japan, and Korea. Although LED specification improves, there is a close relation between the LED backlight supply chain for the Tablet PCs and the NB industries. It would not be difficult for Taiwanese plants to enter into this field of business.

OSRAM: Prospects for Global SolidState Lighting Market OSR AM, which owns a number of worldleading patents and has provided numerous world renowned constructions with lighting products and solutions, is not only one of the major lighting companies in the world but also an innovative LED lighting company. Benjamin Tan., VP of Sales of Osram Asia Pacific provided his insight into the global market of solid-state lighting.

Philips Lumileds Lighting Company: The Success and Challenge in LED Lighting Component Industry After the speech by Philips Lighting on the first day, Sean Zhou, Regional Marketing Director of Philips Lumileds Lighting Company, shared the successful experience of Philips Lumileds and his opinion on the challenges the LED indoor lighting sector is facing.

At first, Mr. Zhou concisely analyzed the LED market from different sectors such as hotel lighting, office lighting and LED replacement light. He then pointed out the key element in indoor lighting and explained the LED bin code and thermal dissipation issue from a professional perspective. In the indoor lighting par t of his speech, he analyzed the light quality, efficiency and cost. As for the solution to bin code issue, he dissected the issue by providing a deliberate explanation of the definition, advantage and the final goal of his method.

A Representative Supplier of Industrial Materials and Adhesives The number of employees of Henkel, founded by Fritz Henkel in 1876 with 135 years of history in the making, increased from 80 to almost 50,000 currently. The annual revenue of Henkel, one of the top 500 companies in the world, reached 15.09 Euros in 2010, is a global company with most of its employees located outside of Germany.

From Henkel’s perspective, different LED lights and backlight products require different adhesives. There is no single adhesive that can be adopted universally in every application. For instance, silicone is not suitable for certain applications despite its excellent leak-proof characteristic. Taking such a variable and cost reduction into account, Henkel discusses with its clients to determine the most compatible adhesive for their products.

High-Quality Adhesives Enhance LED Lighting Products Lu continued to use LED adhesives as an example to demonstrate the help they can offer to the manufacturers. For those who produce low-power or interior lighting products, the quality of thermal dissipation does not make a major difference, as their products do not depend heavily on thermal dissipation. Some manufacturers would simply adopt dry joints, so it is hard for them to understand the benefits of highquality thermal adhesives. Interior lighting products and LED street lamps require different thermal solutions. For example, an adhesive with high coefficient of heat conductivity is suitable for interior lighting applications. Since the products do not require much adhesive, the cost of adhesive is relatively small in proportion to the total cost. On the other hand, it will be a bad choice to adopt the same adhesive in LED lamps as they require a great amount of adhesive, which will result in a considerable cost.

Some manufacturers promote thermal solutions with existing thermal pads and tapes, which cannot be adopted in certain situations. Henkel’s ability to provide its clients with adequate suggestions and customize products according to their specific demands, instead of selling them its finished products, distinguishes them from the competition. Henkel supplies a wide variety of adhesive products, which allow it to truly cater to the needs of different clients.

Lu also analyzed the adhesives for LED packages. He pointed out the majority of LED package makers used to adopt epoxy resin, but recently silicone has become another mainstream choice. The former is highly compatible but will inevitably turn yellow over time; the latter is immune to the color-changing issue and is good for an extended time of use. However, it has a tendency to be penetrated by small molecules that cause residues, which will compromise the luminous flux of LED. Such an issue will not occur in LED packages adopting epoxy resin.

Henkel’s die-attach adhesive holds a large market share in the LED package industry, and Henkel is striving to make a break into the potting adhesive market.

Henkel has launched assorted related solutions in response to the bonding and encapsulation in LED product structures, the potting and protection of various products such as driver IC and light bar, and the component protection in lowtemperature and low-pressure molding process.

Cost Reduction Achieved by Improved and Simplified Manufacturing Process Furthermore, Lu indicated that when a manufacturer plans to carry out an LED light bulb project, the selection of adhesive is usually one of the primary issues, and the decision is always budgetary. To further his point, Lu indicated the limitations cheap adhesives bring to the product design. He stated that due to the low tack of cheap adhesives, manufacturers need to add a buckle to the shell and base of the light bulb in order to prevent the shell from falling off. Based on Henkel’s experience, the buckle design will result in an even higher cost than purchasing high-quality adhesives in the first place. On the other hand, manufacturers would not need to worry about the light bulb shells falling off due to high temperature or other factors if they adopt Henkel’s high-quality adhesives with high tack. Such a decision in the manufacturing process will effectively lower the total cost and in turn increase profit.

In addition, he used another example to illustrate the importance of adhesives to the mass production of LED light bulbs. He pointed out that before the expansion of the LED market, the capacity of a small manufacturer was about 3 thousand light bulbs per month. Due to the relatively small capacity, extra time was allowed for the cheap adhesives to cool down and the bonding process to complete. However, as the market expands, hypothetically, if the capacity increased to 30 thousand light bulbs per month, extra time will not be allowed due to the tight shipment schedules. It raises a question: what are the solutions to such an issue?

First, it can be resolved by adopting adhesives which require much less time to cool down. Second, adopting UV curing equipment to accelerate the bonding process can also solve the issue, but this method is more suitable for LED light product makers with large capacities. Third, adopting two kinds of adhesives to speed up the bonding is another way to go.

Lu indicated that no matter what kind of method the manufacturers choose, Henkel is able to provide the most suitable adhesive. In addition, Henkel will provide their professional insights and help the manufacturers establish the most proper production scale and budget.

The Current State of LED Adhesive Market Henkel has sought out joint ef for ts with many LED manufacturers, mostly in China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan.Lu stressed that Henkel has successfully expanded its business to the Chinese and South Korean markets, where manufacturers have been endeavoring to establish their own brands globally. On the other hand, there are few Taiwanese vendors as the majority of Taiwanese manufacturers focus on ODM products, whose quality has been hugely acknowledged by the global market. As for the Chinese manufacturers, they are underpinned by the huge adhesive demands from the domestic and global markets.

Lu claimed that in mature markets of Europe and America, manufacturers’ choices of adhesives are not solely based on stability and endurance, but also on the total cost. He expected the Asian market to follow the same path. Henkel has its own R&D center and professional technicians located in countries around the globe. It enables Henkel to provide clients with immediate technology support and solve difficulties they encounter when purchasing and using Henkel’s products.

Moreover, on account of its huge capacity, Henkel’s key products are always ready for shipment. As for customized products, extra time is required as the elements need to be adjusted. Koch, Ph.D., industry expert and the Global Sales Manager of Tridonic. With abundant experience in the American, European, and Asian markets under his belt, he was able to shed some light on both the development of driver ICs and LED controllers and pressing issues regarding LED control system and LED light product criteria.

Tridonic: A Subsidiary of Austria-based Company Zumtobel AG Tridonic is an upcoming European LED company specializing in the manufacture of driver ICs. The company possesses many advanced technologies and patents, and it has established a significant presence in the traditional lighting market. Now, Tridonic has successfully made its way into the LED industry. They are a subsidiary of Austria-based company, Zumtobel AG, which owns two lighting brands: Zumtobel and Thorn, both renowned names with a longstanding history. Tridonic is in charge of the manufacturing of the corporation’s lighting components.

When Zumtobel was first founded by Dr. Walter Zumtobel in 1950, the major products included fluorescent lights and their components, which were newly invented at the time. In 2000, Zumtobel completed the acquisition of Thorn Lighting, established by Jules Thorn and Alfred Deutsch in 1928.

Roland W. Koch, Ph.D., Global Sales Manager, Tridonic Roland W. Koch, Ph.D. stated that as the lighting industry evolves, Tridonic evolves with it. The company has been successful in manufacturing essential products in LED power system, LED driver IC, and LED control system sectors. Tridonic hopes to provide the LED lighting industry with high-quality components and to make developing light products and lighting technologies an easier task for manufacturers.

From Tridonic’s perspective, a number of crucial requirements in the LED industry, including electricity flow control, LED brightness control, RGB LED controller, and automatic switches for LED lights are the keys to energy saving and are also integral in indoor, outdoor, building lighting and backlight applications. With respect to LED driver ICs, Mr. Koch pointed out that higher stability and refined energy-saving performance are also important. For example, emergency lighting requires absolute stability and cannot afford any automatic switch malfunction.

Taking this requirement into account, Tridonic launched a series of emergency lighting products equipped with an outstanding stabilizer and driver IC.

In other words, the system will increase the brightness of indoor lighting when detecting insufficient sunlight and will dim the lights when sunlight becomes sufficient. Tridonic’s control system is even capable of altering color temperature in response to different environments when the user adopts its RGB LED products.

He indicated that luxCONTROL, an innovative product of Tridonic compatible with several components for different applications, can conveniently control the lighting and also can deliver good energy saving performance.

The Future of Zhaga Consortium Trodonic has been seeking joint effort with several international major manufacturers and involved with the Zhaga Consortium, whose goal is to unify key criteria for LED lighting products and establish standards for every manufacturer to abide by. Hence, the manufacturers can fully dedicate to designing new light sources and products without having to worry about criteriarelated issues.

Roland W. Koch, Ph.D. pointed out that Zhaga Consortium has been making phenomenal progress in mature markets of Europe and America, and he expected the markets in Asia to follow the same path.

Intelligent LED Lighting Control System

Tridonic is incredibly optimistic about the prospects of the Asian market, and the remarkable growth of its revenue in Asia justifies such optimism. He believes the supreme quality of Tridonic’s products can help Asian manufacturers develop LED lighting products with higher energy-saving efficiency and stability and make their products seen around the world.

To further his point, Roland W. Koch, Ph.D. used the highly popular intelligent LED lighting control system as an example to demonstrate the importance of LED driver ICs. Optimize High-Power LEDs with Thick-Film Technology

As demand for LED luminaries continues to grow, new thermal management technologies are allowing manufacturers to produce LEDs that have higher light output and longer lifespan. LEDs offer many advantages including low energy consumption, long service life (bulbs can last up to 40,000 hours or more), and environmental safety (they contain no mercury). The disadvantages of LEDs, such as higher prices than incandescent or fluorescent lighting, will dissipate as new manufacturing techniques make LEDs less expensive to produce and better able to handle heat fluctuations.

Thermal management is one of the most important aspects of successful LED systems design, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

LEDs convert only 20- to 30-percent of their electric power into visible light; the remainder is converted to heat that must be conducted from the LED die to the underlying circuit board and heat sinks. Excess heat can reduce LED light output and shorten lifespan. Therefore, managing thermal output to dissipate heat is crucial to maximizing the LED’s performance potential.

MCPCBs and thermally enhanced PCBs offer good thermal performance but have limited design flexibility and can become expensive when high thermal performance is required due to additional costs for machining thermal vias and the high cost of expensive thermally conductive dielectric materials. Ceramic substrates are made from lower thermally conductive, but cheaper ceramics, such as alumina, or higher thermally conductive but very expensive ceramics like aluminum nitride.

Overall, ceramic substrates are relatively more expensive than MCPCBs and thermally enhanced PCB substrates.

As an alternative to the substrates discussed above, LED manufacturers are testing the concept of building circuit s direc tly on aluminum substrates, which offer excellent thermal conductivity. Although the LED industry is interested in using aluminum due to its advantages, LED circuits built on aluminum require an insulation layer on the substrate.

Now, advances in thick-film technology are allowing the LED industry to reap the benefits of using aluminum substrates.

IAMS, an Insulated Aluminum Material Systems developed by Heraeus Materials Technology, a supplier of products for thermal management applications, is a low-temperature firing (less than 600°C), thick-film insulating system that can be printed and fired on aluminum substrates. The IAMS material set consists of dielectric pastes, conductors, solder masks, and resistors. All the materials are compatible with 30 0 0, 4 0 0 0, 50 0 0 and 60 0 0 series aluminum substrates.

Although this configuration is used widely in the LED industry, it does not offer the best method for managing heat conductivity and can be expensive to produce.

“IAMS is designed as an insulation system for aluminum substrates,” said Mitsuru Kondo, Global LED Project Manager for the Thick Film Materials Division of Heraeus. “Aluminum cannot handle temperature higher than 660°C, and standard thick-film products are ceramic-based and must be fired at very high temperatures of 800°C to 900°C. “Because the IAMS pastes can be fired at less than 600°C, the system is compatible with aluminum processing conditions,” Kondo explained. “Also, IAMS’ unique glass system minimizes bowing on aluminum while providing high dielec tric breakdown streng th and excellent thermal conductivity.”

“ B a s e d o n th e m ea su r e d r e su l t s , I A M S decreases the LED junction temperature. The measured thermal resistance between the LED active junction and the board’s bottom was up to 20-percent lower with IAMS than in the MCPCBs,” Juntunen noted. Juntunen said she found these results to be very promising and a significant advantage for optimal LED application.

Heat Sink Printing

Heraeus/VTT test circuit using Heraeus IAMS Most thick-film pastes have a CTE (Coefficient of Thermal E xpansion) adjusted for use on high- temperature, low- C TE ceramic substrates. However, if you are using aluminum substrates, which have a very high CTE, and a paste designed for ceramics, the substrate will “bow” due to the differences in CTE. The CTE on IAMS is designed to match the CTE of the aluminum, minimizing any bowing.

Making modifications to the LED package design is simple with IAMS. “ Thick-f ilm technology allows the LED circuit design to be screen printed directly onto the aluminum substrate,” noted Kondo. “The screen pattern can be easily changed to accommodate circuit design changes by simply changing the screen and reprinting.” This flexibility can be advantageous during prototyping and design stages.

In addition, because the printing process used to deposit the IAMS pastes is an additive process with selective deposition capability, costs are low. The insulating pastes are deposited only where the conductive circuit is located and, with the proper design, thermal vias are easily connected directly to the high thermal conductivity aluminum. There is minimal material waste during the circuit manufacturing compared to etched MCPCBs and thermally enhanced PCBs where sheets of copper are chemically etched to create the circuit. With the IAMS system, the conductor paste is deposited only where the circuit needs to be formed.

IAMS technology also allows the customer to use only one insulating paste. While other thick-film technologies require two different types of glass pastes for each insulation layer, only one paste is needed when using IAMS. Finally, all IAMS pastes meet RoHS requirements.

A Proven Technology C r u c i a l t o t h e p e r f o r m a n c e o f L ED s i s effective heat dissipation; keeping the LED’s temperature lower helps to increase brightness and life span. To prove that IAMS could provide the thermal management properties that LED manufacturers required, Heraeus sought independent testing. Heraeus asked the VTT Technical Research Center in Oulu, Finland to perform a comparison study of MCPCBs vs.

IAMS. “We compared the thermal characteristics of LED modules using MCPCBs and IAMS,” said Aila Sitomaniemi, a Research Scientist at VTT. “We tested 10 modules containing high-power LEDs soldered on each board. Each board was placed inside a thermostat chamber that kept the board bottoms at a contact temperature of 25°C to ensure each board received efficient and equal cooling.”

“Test results showed that the LEDs soldered with IAMS paste operated cooler than the LEDs soldered on the commercial MCPCBs,” Sitomaniemi noted. “The average junction temperatures were up to three degrees lower at 350 mA drive current and up to six degrees lower at 700 mA.”

The ability to print directly on the heat sink is a future possibility with IAMS. Currently, in most LED assembly operations, LEDs are purchased in package form and an adhesive is used to bond the LED and heat sink to the MCPCB. Every extra layer increases the thermal resistance, which eventually diminishes brightness and life expectancy.

“IAMS technology allows the customer to print the insulation layer directly on the heat sink, eliminating extra thermal resistance from additional thermal substrates (MCPCBs, thermally enhanced PCBs, ceramics, etc),” Kondo commented. “The LED device can be directly connected to the heat sink, providing the best possible method for heat dissipation.”

Lower Temperature; Longer LED Lifespan Heraeus’ Insulated Aluminum Materials System minimizes thermal resistance by reducing the number of interfaces/layers required in an LED package. This single-part, versatile system allows low-cost design changes and selective deposition for LED manufacturers. The ability to use a less expensive substrate, such as aluminum vs. metal-core printed circuit boards, increases conductivity and lengthens the LED’s life span.

“Keeping the temperature low in the LED package is essential for optimal LED functionality,” concluded Kondo. “By lowering the temperature of an LED by 10 degrees, the life expectancy of the device can be more than doubled and overall costs can be lowered, and that makes LEDs much more attractive to the consumer.”

According to Eveliina Juntunen, a Research Scientist at VTT, thermal management is the key feature dominating the performance of LED devices. “When using high-power LEDs, effective heat dissipation is needed to meet the increasing requirements for efficiency, color, reliability, and product lifetime,” said Juntunen.

Technology Optimize High-Power LEDs with Thick-Film Technology

Neal Hunter, Cree co-founder, added, "Not long ago, fixture efficacy of 100+ lumens per watt was impossible, but Cree is shipping fixtures at 110 LPW today. We calculate that if fully deployed, LED lighting at 150 LPW could bring a 16.5 percent reduction in the nation's electric energy consumption, returning it to 1987 levels. By pushing the limits of what is possible in LED lighting, Cree continues to design products that help reduce global demands for energy."

LED lighting at this level of performance is only made possible by advancements across all elements of the LED lighting system lighting-class LEDs, optical elements, drivers and power supplies.

Optimizing each element was critical in achieving the performance reached by Cree's prototype LED lamp. As an efficiency comparison, a traditional 75 watt incandescent light bulb produces 1,100 lumens at only 14.6 lumens per watt.

"Cree's innovation, technology breakthroughs and focus on energyefficient lighting solutions continue to re-shape the LED lighting market," said Dave Morton, Courtyard Program Director, Marriott International.

Third-party testing by independent lab OnSpeX confirmed that Cree's lamp delivered more than 1,330 lumens and consumed only 8.7 watts. The lamp uses Cree TrueWhite Technology to deliver a highquality, energy-efficient light with a CRI of 91 at a warm white color of 2800 K. This project benefits from technology developed under DOE-funded contracts, which are part of Cree's ongoing collaboration with DOE to advance the successful adoption of energy-saving solidstate lighting.

Demonstrating the future of lighting, Cree unveiled a concept LED light bulb from its lighting research and development team. Redefining what is possible with high-performance LED lighting, the lamp delivers more than 1,300 lumens at 152 lumens per watt (LPW) using Cree TrueWhite Technology. Cree's prototype LED light bulb exceeds the performance goals set by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the 21st Century Lamp, the third category in its L Prize SM competition.

"Cree's concept lamp is a far cry from its 20th century counterparts," said Gerry Negley, Cree LED lighting chief technology officer and co-inventor of Cree TrueWhite Technology. "No one has fully envisioned what the lighting of the future will look like, which allows Cree to continue to innovate without constraint."

The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 directed the DOE to establish the Bright Tomorrow L Prize competition. The 21st Century Lamp competition is the third category in the legislation, joining competitions to create replacements for some of the most widely used and most inefficient lighting technologies on the market today, 60W incandescent lamps and PAR 38 halogen lamps. The preliminary specifications for the 21st Century Lamp include: >1200 lumens, >150 lumens per watt, >90 CRI and CCT between 28003000K.

1.0 w/mk In recent years, there has been a rapid increase in needs for slimmer and smaller implemented devices due to the miniaturization of electronic devices, as well as the mounting of LED chips on displays and lighting.

The main factor behind the generation of heat by devices such as LED chips and other implemented components is the low thermal conductivity of epoxy resins (0.2~0.3 W/m・K) which are the main component of plastic substrates. On the other hand, although metal substrates are used as high heat dissipation board materials, these substrates suffer from electrical reliability and processability problems.

To overcome the problems of plastic and metal substrates, we propose the following two solutions.
