Flexibility is the answer to every crisis

The building sector is still sailing rough waters. Of course we see that at Jan Snel too, but we also see that the situation offers extra opportunities for our way of building. In this edition of JNSNL, we proudly show you a number of recent projects. We’ve been busy this past year and in the last quarter of 2012 we are in the race for several great international projects. This also keeps our prospects for 2013 looking good. The economic crisis can certainly be felt at Jan Snel Transport, and they’re not alone. It’s in times like these that our mentality and customer focus are important strengths. We do everything we can for our transport clients and we continue to innovate and break into new markets. Positive energy abounds. Jan Snel is still making good progress, for instance in the way that we present our company. The new website has an international, professional appearance and we drew lots of attention at Provada with the live construction of a gigantic LEGO model. That in particular was a great success that led to a number of concrete orders, including two student residences in Amsterdam counting 562 and 820 rooms! Another milestone at Provada was signing a development contract with Stichting DUWO (the largest provider of student housing in the Randstad) to start construction on 136 durable, modular student flats near TU Delft in the summer of 2013. Besides student residences, our offshore units are doing really well, and we are extremely active in the hospital and care sector. We’re happy to keep you up to date of all of these developments. Visit our website now and then for the latest updates. This magazine, as always, provides you with background information as well as the usual flexible building inspiration. It’s an ideal magazine to flip through over the Christmas

eye·catch·er Experts at getting attention Jan Snel wants to build buildings that attract attention, challenge ideas and catch the eye of both visitors and passersby. We don’t achieve all of that on our own; we collaborate with architects more and more often, because together we can create even better, more surprising designs.

Flexibles At Jan Snel, we like flexibility in all shapes and sizes. There are countless innovative products that are at least as flexible as our solutions. Here we showcase a few of the flexible gadgets we’ve spotted.

Snel Transport

Exceptional transport, “Jan Snel Transport? Yeah, I know them; I see their red lorries drive by all the time.” It’s a common reaction when our name comes up in conversation, but actually the lorries are just a small link in the whole transport chain. What it’s really all about are the people: the men in the cab of the lorry, the heroes of the asphalt. The motivated drivers, who do the work, have a flexible attitude and pull out all the stops to do the job for the clients. We believe these people deserve a little time to shine, so we proudly present: the drivers of Jan Snel Zuid in Hulst.

Heerema is going to put the first four 33ft modules and the first two 15ft modules to use. We install the modules on the Dolwin Alpha; a converter platform for ABB. Heerema is currently building this for its client, TenneT. As soon as the weather conditions on the North Sea permit it (this is expected to be in mid-March 2013), the modules will go offshore. The buildings are up in no time and can be repositioned again after use. Comfort2.

The new stopping place will be built over a span of eight weeks for client SWO Harderwijk (elderly welfare foundation). It is intended for permanent use. The community centre is a good example of the versatility of Movix.

There’s a lot involved in the large-scale renovation of a nursing home. Apart from the logistic scheduling, the means, the scheduling, it is first and foremost about the people. For residents, normal living must be able to continue with as little nuisance as possible. Peace, cleanliness and regularity is the motto here. Snel modernisation

We’ve previously mentioned the cooperation between Otto Workforce and Jan Snel to build so-called ‘labour hotels’ (accommodations for foreign employees). Jan Snel developed special units for OTTO that serve as studio apartments for foreign temporary staff. Construction is now in full swing and in December the first hotel, on Calandkade in The Hague, will open its doors. But there’s more.

The concept of hotel accommodations for temporary staff has been well received and is continuing to develop. The opening of the first hotel is a good time to stop and think about the future. More than a hotel What is it really? The new accommodations are called hotels, but they’re really much more than that. They’re temporary living accommodations with a permanent character and they seem more like a home than a hotel room. They are complete studios for two people, with a shower, toilet, kitchenette, television, furniture and beds. Personally, I was afraid it would be noisy, but that is absolutely not the case. It’s actually wonderfully quiet.” CO2 reduction But the quiet isn’t the only improvement, as Connie explains. “We wanted to drastically reduce the CO2 emissions and we did, too. In fact, recently, Remco, Jan Snel’s Joost Kalis and I were looking at the meters and we couldn’t believe our eyes; we’ve cut our heating costs by more than half compared to the old building. And the building has become a beautiful eye-catcher. We even have a growing number of registrations, which is, we believe, a direct result of the new facilities.” Roll out The pilot was a success in every way: the construction went well; students, parents and teachers are all satisfied; the building

Jan Snel builds student accommodati As the media have been saying for some time: there is a shortage of high-quality student accommodation. And because student housing is one of the building sectors expected to grow in the coming years, obviously we want to develop in this area. The Hague Bridge: not all talk A good example of how simple it can sometimes be to increase a city’s social cohesion is The Hague Bridge. This international, multicultural meeting centre organises events in the city for local residents and expats and helps to get the best events off the ground. Hungry Mind is their base of operations; students, parents and local residents come here every day to do their homework, to play sports and to create art. Jan Snel provided a multifunctional space, which serves as a dojo, among other things, where lessons in various self-defence styles are given.
