Explosion-proof developments & booming business Can you feel it? Everywhere you go you can read and hear that the economy is picking up again. The signs are looking good and we are certainly noticing the difference in our wallets. Prices haven’t yet reached the right level, but the recovery has started. What’s more, we of course have to make things happen ourselves. During the times when things were a bit quieter, we were anything but inactive. In this magazine you will be able to read about the blast-resistant modules that we recently launched. Our blast-resistant solutions are now available for rent in the Netherlands for the very first time. Moreover, the lightweight offshore units of our partner, H2M, have been highly improved and renewed. As such we continue to innovate across the board, which flies in the face of the trend towards specialisation. We never did limit ourselves to a single segment, for example by focusing solely on student housing. Instead we are active in a large number of sectors and it is here where our strength lies, because what we do, we do well. That we really go for it is just something that is part of our make-up: Jan Snel is certainly no generalist; we simply have lots of specialisations! Besides all the innovation, each day sees us pulling out all the stops for our customers. Their requests are getting more and more specific; for example in the field of safety. Our answer to them is that we acquire all the accreditation we need. Later in this magazine, you will be able to read all about the extremely demanding FPAL audit we successfully underwent last year. We never set ourselves limits and this has not gone unnoticed abroad. We operate more and more often on the international stage. I still think it is amazing that when Shell needs a cleanroom in Qatar, they end up selecting Jan Snel as the partner who is able to meet all their requirements. So, with a lot of things coming our way at the moment, it’s time to roll up our sleeves, just how we like it. Or as we say at Jan Snel: “We’re doing it!” And that’s exactly right.

front·run·ner We aim to be the front runner in everything we do, even if something entirely new comes our way. It spurs us on to learn about the market and go for it. Take student housing: we had never designed any before and now we are installing 30 a week for Ravel Residence. Flexibility is not just something you find in our products, it’s also in our genes. Nothing surpasses reinventing yourself again and again.

Flexibles At Jan Snel, we love flexibility in all shapes and sizes. For example, there are countless innovative products that are at least as flexible as our solutions. Let us introduce some flexible gadgets that we have spotted.

Working cleanly on clean fuels

Jan Snel operates over the whole world, but even for us Qatar is relatively new. We were given the job of constructing a cleanroom there for Shell. Clearly, it was a wonderful opportunity as we are keen to use our expertise to complete a great project in that part of the world too. We spoke to Soan Thung, Project Manager at Shell, and ask him about the background.

A source of ignition might be a small grain of sand and there are hydrocarbons in your fingerprints; that’s how delicate it is. We therefore have to take utmost care in ensuring that materials are built into these oxygen factories as cleanly as possible.” Clean work necessity Just like in other factories, the factories at the plant in Qatar need regular maintenance. Soan says, “Here, we regularly have to face a maintenance shutdown. The maintenance of the valves in the oxygen pipeline is done in a cleanroom, because even the tiniest grain of sand can serve as a source of ignition and cause a very major fire. For this reason we set out to find a supplier who could help us design and quickly install a cleanroom. Jan Snel came forward through the contractor; they carried out the job for us.”

Meanwhile, Harry van Zandwijk, whom I was dating at the time, had already started work at my parents’ company. That was 1989 when I had started working in the Purchasing department. My father had already mentioned that he wanted to cut back on his working hours and so Harry, my brother Jan Junior and I joined forces to ensure a smooth takeover of the business. Of course, work sometimes comes up in conversation – it’s only natural that our children know what it is we do. Is their career already chalked out? Absolutely not! They’re free to make their own decisions and I certainly won’t be forcing them to join the business. All I want for them is to be happy in whatever they do.

Snel developments

DEVELOPMENTS

Temporary accommodation: from five years up to a maximum of fifteen years

Regulations covering temporary accommodation have changed. The fact that the legislator and government can see the benefits of modular construction is a good thing. By extending the period that buildings are allowed to remain in place, the differences between permanent and temporary buildings is becoming smaller and the arguments in favour of temporary buildings for the long term are gaining ground.

Longer-lasting enjoyment from temporary buildings Some important news is that the period for temporary buildings has been extended. Previously a temporary building was only allowed to remain for a maximum of five years. This period has now been extended to ten years for buildings that are outside the zoning plan and fifteen years for projects that fall within the zoning plan.

Energy requirements and thermal envelope En route to energy-efficient living and working, the energy performance coefficient has been tightened up. Compared to 2007 levels the EPC requirement has roughly been halved. In line with the EPC the requirements for thermal envelopes have also been amended. These are all logical steps towards energy neutral living and working.

The future within reach with Movix What can you take home from the above developments? That our solutions living and working are ready for the future. Take our Movix system. It can be quickly built, it is outstanding in terms of quality and highly budget friendly. The system meets the tightened requirements and may therefore remain standing for fifteen years without any problem (zoning plan permitting, of course). If you would like to know more about legislative changes or specific advice about which product best suits your space requirements, our consultants will gladly assist you.

at路ten路tion We are rather modest, so we would rather let our buildings speak for us because they are quite good at attracting attention. This is something we actively work on, together with architects who know how you design striking buildings. Besides the appearance, we devote a great deal of attention to the functionality of our solutions. A good example is our line of blast resistant shelters and modules that we recently introduced into the Netherlands. They immediately grabbed the attention of companies in potentially explosive atmospheres.

and coordination between the disciplines and as such we ran into delays during the construction process. In such a situation communication doesn’t always run flawlessly and efficiently, but I realise that with a project like ours there are always going to be areas for improvement. In any case, everything was sorted out properly and now we have got two buildings that serve their purposes exceedingly well.” Future The new buildings give us an extension to our capacity and surface area. It is not yet known how long they will remain in place. Arno: “We can extend the terminal even more, depending on RWG’s growth. This was taken into account when the zoning plan was drafted. However, we haven’t reached that point yet. First things first: the terminal first has to reach full operating capacity. Whatever the case, we are ready.”

Snel in conversation

Two people, one theme. In this feature we get two people to shine their light on one subject. This time it is the turn of Willem Overdiep van TIG Sports and Patrick Beuker, Account Manager at Jan Snel. They discuss fast reflexes: essential for a top athlete and also applicable to Jan Snel’s approach to supporting TIG Sports’ events.

Exchange of words Willem:

Patrick:

“TIG Sports organises large-scale sports events at national and international level. From the KLM Open to the Hockey World Cup in The Hague and the Rowing World Cup at the Bosbaan. This year the Beach Volleyball World Championships in The Hague, Amsterdam, Apeldoorn and Rotterdam are on the agenda. Jan Snel joins the game for the logistics organisation of an event. They are our regular partner when we need to have temporary accommodation built for offices, facility rooms etc.

“We have been working for TIG Sports for eight years and we are proud of it. The world of events appeals to the imagination. There are always unforeseen circumstances that you have to respond to. A foreign television crew that decides to come on Friday afternoon and needs an office and editing room; that sort of thing. I think it’s fantastic. Then we get down to the business of coming up with a solution and we and a team are somewhere in a nature area on a Saturday morning putting up a number of temporary buildings.

They also built the entire jury room along that Amsterdam Bosbaan for the Rowing World Cup. Most events have one thing in common: they are at locations which were not originally intended for the organisation of large-scale events; for example a nature area or city centre. That requires a tight logistics schedule, a large dose of entrepreneurial spirit and excellent reflexes. Jan Snel has all of that.

Fast reflexes

Over the years the bond between us has grown and we can interact with each other extremely well. We not only interact with Patrick Beuker, but also with the whole team. That’s handy because now we know the drivers personally too and they are usually cast in the same mould. For example: during the setting up of an event at Scheveningen beach, the vital crane on one of the lorries broke down. The solution was thought up and put into action right away. As far as I am concerned that was an outstanding example of fast reflexes and ability to solve problems!”

Shortly we will be supplying and installing accommodation for the Beach Volleyball World Cup. It is being held at four different locations in the Netherlands, but none of them are beaches. TIG Sport is bringing beach volleyball to the people, so one of the places we are building is on the Dam in Amsterdam. I am already looking forward to it. Of course, obviously sometimes something will go wrong. These things can happen, but basically it is all about wanting to work together and coming up with a good solution. If it won’t work out one way then you just have to try something else. You have to be able to deal with it: improvisation. I always see it as a challenge. As far as I am concerned, it’s not only top athletes who have outstanding reflexes; Jan Snel has them too.”

part¡ner Not for the client, but with the client. That is one of our core values at Jan Snel. We are prepared to go a long way for that. We help come up with solutions and we are not afraid of going off the beaten track. Partnership means attractive projects with great results because everyone gets optimum benefit from each others’ qualities.

Snel tells Flagship One special project was the supply of nine modules for the complete housing for 24 people. H2M signed up for the design, manufacture and installation.

“Wonderful. For this client we built an entire village in the German part of the North Sea. We set out with an idea and it grew into a total project in which shouldered the burden for the client right down the cutlery in the drawers.”

TAIL WIND FOR With a relocation, a successful trade fair, new products and a major expansion of the rental fleet, H2M is directly on course for another extraordinary year. We’d like to bring you up to date with Edwin van Zuijlen, Director of Operations at H2M, using a number of keywords.

Lightweight steel modules In the previous JNSNL we talked about the introduction of the lightweight steel modules. It was a world first in 2014 and H2M is now continuing to build on that success. The company installed the first modules in the second half of 2014; this specific project was extended with modules fitted

working environment with the necessary facilities and a professional consulting room.

“It is a considerable step forwards; from the warehouse where we started out to nice, fully fledged business premises.”

Snel tells Trade fairs H2M presented the new 20ft unit at Offshore Energy 2014 in Amsterdam and at Maintenance NEXT 2015 in Rotterdam. It was met with enthusiastic responses. Interest has been shown in using the units for short periods, such as during annual shutdowns. At the moment H2M are approaching other parties whose

Projects Jobs are pouring in. In mid-May, eight more modules are heading toward Norway to be installed on the Dolwin Beta transformer

“There is a lot of demand for supplying units for short periods, for example during a shutdown or turnaround. We are able to respond to this.”

2015 For the second half of 2015 the plans are piling up. The number of rental units is being extended to 50 (instead of 15 in early 2014). In addition,

presenting the latest developments at Offshore Energy 2015.

In addition, H2M is in the production phase of six 20ft modules for Centrica Energy. These units will serve as accommodation for the employees during the shutdown of the gas production platform. After the maintenance period, the units will come back to the port of Den Helder and they can be installed in another platform belonging

has been completed and the final fitting out will be done in Abu Dhabi. The project is expected to be completed in June.

“We want to strengthen our market position by continually developing and responding to demand from the market. We have acquired our first job in the Middle East for the supply of four modules and we are getting the first requests from South America, where we are involved in a number of tendering processes. So even over there they are managing to find us better and better.”

Snel tells Early this year, Ravel Residence opened its doors. This was our largest temporary accommodation project so far. There is no time to relax and enjoy this mega job; at the moment we are busy with its successor: AmstelHome. This is also student housing, just as big and again with Student Experience. Niels Vergeer, Director of Operations at Jan Snel: “At AmstelHome we are putting into practice the lessons we learned at Ravel Residence.” 30 flats per week There is still a need for quality student housing in Amsterdam, despite the completion of Ravel Residence with its 800 student flats. This is why the contract for AmstelHome was quickly signed. Although the projects have a lot in common, for Jan Snel there is one essential difference: time. For Ravel Residence we manufactured 25 flats a week in Montfoort. For AmstelHome the number is 30. The phase prior to the construction also went quickly: we kicked off in December with

Snel tells The best type of collaboration is the one that challenges all parties. One where you push the boundaries together. That was the case at Dow Benelux B.V. (Dow) in Terneuzen. Jan Snel entered a partnership with Hunter Buildings to supply Dow with explosion-proof modules. The results were new opportunities for Jan Snel and a satisfied customer. Katrien Neirinckx, Global Category Leader for Fabricated Equipment at Dow, tells her story.

may also be highly relevant to other petrochemical companies. Formal and informal The communication throughout the process was a pleasure. Katrien: “It was formal as the situation demanded, for instance during the bidding process, and informal when possible. We made clear agreements and Jan Snel kept diligently to them; for instance, concerning the schedule. Jan Snel/Hunter built the units in the Czech Republic. Once built they were shipped ready-made to the Netherlands.”

Knocking a nail in the wall, for instance, is not really a good idea as it directly reduces the modules resistance. Moreover, the doors, which are very heavy, must remain closed at all times.
