Just as we were completing the last issue of the social season, we learned of the passing of Valley icon and philanthropist Ellie Shapiro. Rather than wait until next fall to memorialize the great lady, we felt it necessary to stop the press and pay tribute to one of the finest people in our community.

While having dinner with Jazelle Ghiz in 1990 at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse on Camelback Road, I was introduced to Ellie and Don Shapiro. The new restaurant at the time was a hot spot for the social set in Phoenix. When Jazelle said we were going over to their table, I have to admit I was totally intimidated. They were one of the city’s biggest power couples. Don had hit pay dirt with a hugely successful optical business and Ellie was the number one realtor in the state! My head spun as we left their table. They were far more interested in talking about me than they were themselves. They were quite a pair.

When I went to work for Trends in January of 1994, I remember the Shapiros were at everything! Ellie told me that she liked to buy tables at all the large charity balls and galas to say thank you to a community that had been so good to her and her husband. She went on to say that it was a nice way to show her appreciation to her clients, who had been so supportive of her real estate career too.

Ellie got her start in the business accidentally in 1964, while looking for a home for out-of-town friends. She said she enjoyed looking at different homes and finding the right fit for a perspective client. Ellie always said that the hard sell was one of the worst things you could do in real estate. She told me that at one of her very first deals, she was so nervous that she told her client she had to leave to get her hair done. With that true and honest comment, the client immediately made an offer on the house and the rest became history. Ellie broke the glass ceiling in a male-dominated world. Her dynamite smile and soft-spoken approach had any client in her back pocket the moment they met her. She would become the highest grossing agent by the 1970s and by the early 1990s the most successful real estate agent in Arizona! It was not unusual to see her profiled in local and national periodicals on a constant basis. A 1992 Trendsetter; Ellie asked in 2010 if she could come onto the Trends Charitable Fund Board, should a spot open. I still regard her as one of the hardest-working TCF board members since I joined the publication. It was not unusual to find Ellie on the floor of our conference room, rifling thru numerous grant requests and stacking massive amounts into overflowing banker’s boxes. Well into her late 80s, she truly loved the philanthropic community and showed no signs of stopping. Ellie Shapiro was a Valley Icon and an incredible philanthropist for more than 55 years. Her grace, style, wit and delicate approach to business; made her a true stand-out in a world of competitive stuffed shirts. Ellie had an extraordinary life, one that most could only dream of. She will be missed.

Translational Genomics Research Institute

The Trends Charitable Fund board selected Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) as its beneficiary because of the institute’s innovative genomic technologies and focus on women and children. Phoenix-based TGen is a global leader in precision medicine, a rapidly evolving field that is transforming the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Specifically, the Trends Charitable Fund will provide much needed research dollars to two projects at TGen: • T Gen’s Center for Rare Childhood Disorders: After years following diagnostic odysseys across the nation, and even other countries, TGen’s advanced genomic research is providing answers and hope to hundreds of children. After arriving at TGen, often with just a collection of symptoms, TGen’s diagnoses help put physicians on the right track towards treating the most vulnerable among us. • W omen’s cancers: TGen-led research has discovered that mutations in a gene known as SMARCA4 drives a specific type of extremely aggressive ovarian cancer that most often affects girls and young women. TGen found this “genetic superhighway” mutation in a gene common to the overwhelming majority of patients with small cell carcinoma of the ovary, hypercalcemic type, also known as SCCOHT.

In true Semper Fidelis, or always faithful, fashion, community supporters joined together at the Ninth Annual Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Arizona Awards Dinner at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa. With the help of this community, the Arizona campaign raised more than $780,000 to support college pursuant children of Marines and Navy Corpsmen from Arizona. Currently 79 students from Arizona receive assistance from the Scholarship Foundation. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Co-Chairs were Dave English and Joanna Sweatt with honorary chairs Diane and Dan Nelson and Master of Ceremonies Mike Broomhead. The 2019 Scholarship Recipient Speaker was sophomore,

Shannon Andre, of the University of Arizona. Honoree Lieutenant General John F. Goodman, USMC (Ret) received the Bruce T. Halle Semper Fidelis Award for his valiant leadership in the Marine Corps and continued support of military efforts around the world. Her goal in life is to break a lot of records. And this is what she is doing in her very full and busy life. She feels she can outwork anybody and likes to win. Her gift is to solve people’s problems and she feels honored when people ask her to help them become more successful. She enjoys taking complicated problems and unraveling a solution to make her clients more money. She says it’s like a puzzle and a way to get to yes. Jordan also thrives on high risk! “I take the black and white of law and create abstract solutions to make my clients successful.” Jordan is a most positive person and as a self-made woman, her mantra for her positive approach is, “Your thoughts are your reality!” Her reality is filled with choices she makes every day. Jordan is determined to be effective with clients, her team, her spouse, her children and her friends. One of the ways she accomplishes so much daily is that she doesn’t do anything she doesn’t want to do. Every day is great!

Her favorite quote is from Wayne Gretsky who said, “I see the puck before it hits the stick.” And her grandfather’s quote. “Dream the important dream, because you have the ability to make it come true.” Her favorite time of day is the 7 minutes to drive kids to school. They discuss news and the events of the day.

She treats her employees similarly. One of the ways is she has a concierge to help them with their lives and they are all treated equally.

She loves being a couple with her husband Jason and believes they are better together! As a couple they are competitive and also very supportive of each other. They both understand demands to delegate and time competition. She loves their Saturday night date! She says her husband Jason is super creative – he’s amazing!

She attributes her incredible energy and attitude to her dad who never treated her

She is always mentoring 12-30 people and always tells them no one should be telling you what to do and be. Her supportive parents always told her to “be yourself” and this is what she encourages her mentees to be! “I am a great mom, wife, boss, lawyer – this is my identity.” “Most of all I love to GO GO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

CHAPPAQUIDDICK 50 YEARS LATER By Bill Dougherty

It’s no surprise that 50 years after the tragic accident on Chappaquiddick Island, that claimed the life of Mary Joe Kopechne and exposed the political corruption of our country, we still have little if few answers. On the sunny afternoon on July 18, Senator Teddy Kennedy and five of his assistance and political associates basked in the afternoon sun on Dykes Beach on the affluent New England Island of Chappaquiddick just off Martha’s Vineyard. Their quiet reunion with six of Bobby Kennedy’s campaign strategists, known as the “Boiler Room Girls,” would carve a lasting and unfortunate memory into the minds of millions of Americans. The Boiler Room Girls were aptly named for their tireless campaign efforts in an un-air-conditioned and windowless room in Washington D.C. There the six ladies analyzed the regional

Mary Jo Kopechne voting habits of delegates voting for RFK and his two democratic contenders for the 1969 presidential election. The ladies, along with the RFK aids, had not seen one another as a group since RFK had been tragically cut down the previous summer by an assassin in Los Angeles. The group of 12 convened that July night for a reunion at a private cottage on Chappa quiddick Island for cocktails and dinner. About 12 am Mary Jo Kopechne and Teddy Kennedy slipped out of the party unnoticed. Since the two barely knew each other, it is suspected that they just went for a drive. Ms. Kopechne was a devout Catholic and considered to be the Boiler Room psychologist. Sen. Kennedy likely wanted to talk about his slain brother. Sen. Kennedy may have had other plans, but it’s highly unlikely that Ms. Kopechne would have acquiesced. The following morning, Sen. Kennedy’s 1967 Oldsmobile Delmont 88 was discovered upside down just off Dyke Bridge. Mary Jo Kopechne was discovered in the rear foot well of the passenger compartment. The group had sunbathed just to the west of the wooden bridge the previous afternoon.

Since this horrific incident, countless books and documentaries have been made. It’s still next to impossible to believe Sen. Kennedy’s tale that he made repeated efforts to rescue Ms. Kopechne, when he was not a good swimmer and wore a heavily leaded back brace from a 1964 aircraft injury. He would go on to say that he also swam back to Edgartown in total darkness and remained disoriented for the next 10 hours. That morning at his hotel in Edgartown; Sen. Kennedy, dressed to the nines, sat in the open drinking coffee in a congratulatory discussion with the winners of the regatta held the previous afternoon. Suddenly two of his aides rushed onto the terrace and pushed him into a room. He emerged minutes later ashen-faced and shaking. He then went immediately to the police department and turned himself in claiming he was the driver of the doomed black Oldsmobile. On the 25th anniversary of the tragedy, a BBC documentary was completed but never aired in the United States for fear of Kennedy retribution. After countless interviews of island police and locals, they surmised that Sen. Kennedy became uneasy when an off-duty deputy sheriff approached his idle vehicle around 12:30 that morning. The deputy stated that the car’s dome light illuminated, suggesting the exit of one of the two passengers in the car. The auto immediately went into reverse and quickly corrected itself into drive and sped toward Dyke Bridge. Two bestselling books would also reach the same conclusion. Teddy Kennedy was driving with a beautiful woman. He was probably intoxicated. His wife Joan was seven months pregnant and he planned to run for president. He probably got out and told Ms. Kopechne to hide the car.

Unfortunately, Mary Jo Kopechne had just recently received her driver’s license and drove a compact Volkswagen bug. She was also only 5-feet, 2-inches high. This could explain the bizarre movements of the mammoth Oldsmobile sedan witnessed by off-duty officer Huck Look minutes before the tragedy. In the days that followed, first responders to the crash said that there was no exit indication for the submerged auto. Sen Kennedy was 6-feet, 2-inches tall, a lousy swimmer and had no visible abrasions on his body. The coroner, Dr. Don Mills, argued with first responder John Farrar; who said in front of television cameras that Ms. Kopechne had not drowned but suffocated after a horrifying three to four hours gasping for air. The Martha’s Vineyard mortician agreed with Mr. Farrar. The Kennedy people dissuaded the Kopechne family from having an autopsy performed on their only child. In 1970, the family received the equivalent of roughly a million dollars in 2019 monetary standards between Sen. Kennedy’s insurance company and the Kennedy family. That same year a secret inquest was held on the subject along with a subsequent grand jury investigation. However, the grand jury was only allowed to call four witnesses that had not been called in the previous inquest. It was terribly obvious to all involved that the Kennedy family held almost a strangle hold on the state of Massachusetts. Sen. Kennedy opted not to run in 1972 or in 1976. His then-wife Joan suffered a miscarriage in August of 1969, something the beautiful divorcee later publicly blamed on Chappaquiddick. The Massachusetts senator tried unsuccessfully to run in 1980, but the Chappaquiddick tragedy resurfaced in almost every interview and article surrounding his ill-fated loss to Jimmy Carter for the Democratic nomination. Mary Jo Kopechne was a golden girl. She obtained a business degree in 1962, when most women preferred the allure of built-in appliances and suburban living to that of college. She became a teacher in Birmingham, marched for civil rights and ended up becoming Bobby Kennedy’s greatest asset. The majority of his valiant speeches that we still hear today, including his last in Los Angeles, were written by her. The Chappaquiddick incident put a permanent black mark on the Kennedy legacy and took the life of a beautiful woman who had so much more to give. Fifty years later, we still don’t know what happened on that moonless and very dark night on a New England island. Chappaquiddick was a little-known summer place to most U.S. citizens until that tragic night in 1969. Now unfortunately, the word has become part of the lexicon of the American language.

The beautiful red front door, adorned with a wreath, opened and I was welcomed by the beautiful, smart, energetic lady for whom I designed a makebelieve-dream kitchen at the Home Show several years ago! Lin Sue attributes her happiness and contentment with life today to working as Director of Community Engagement at Hospice of the Valley. She wanted the job at Hospice and believed by opening her heart in prayer, God would answer her wish in his time. And that’s what happened. She is a woman of strong faith and says, “God is at the center of my life.” “I try always to listen to his will to serve with my many gifts I’ve been given.” She feels she had a “hard to beat” career as a newscaster and journalist. She met interesting people and loved working with colleagues at the station who became like family. And Hospice beat it! Her greatest focus is family and raising two teenage sons. Also, traveling more with her daughter and soon the whole family to the Holy Land.

Lin Sue also started a dessert company called The Sweet Shop. She and her best friend Cindy Leech are partners and make the most delicious dark chocolate pecan toffee cookies themselves for parties, holidays and special events. Lin Sue purchased her home in 1996 and has renovated it to be her style and signature. She says she is a “cottage girl.” The floors are wood and with touches of “McKenzie Childs” influence everywhere. She says design for her must be in control like the black and white checks, characteristic of McKenzie Childs. However, she loves a pop of color as a surprise!!! Her home is her sanctuary and her favorite room is the kitchen. She loves to feed people.

I had not visited his current location in Scottsdale yet, but I had dined at his former location in Central Phoenix several years ago. His spot in Scottsdale is extremely elegant and yet welcoming, especially if you are dining outside on the lovely patio. Our server, Marcos, was delightful and helpful in making tough decisions especially when everything looked and sounded so good! We started

with the absolutely amazing Buratta served with prosciutto and roasted peppers. To follow, were organic baby field greens topped with balsamic dressing. All of his pastas are handcrafted and, in addition to what is on the regular menu, he also has vast choices of his specialties that he presents seasonally as done in Italy. I was torn between the Fettuccine Santa Lucia infused with ink from the cuttlefish and sautéed with mussels, clams and calamari in a slightly spicy red sauce served with fresh Maine lobster; or what I ultimately ordered which was a sundried-tomato-infused-garlic pasta with olive oil, sliced scallops and shrimp with spicy tomato sauce. With the recent documentary on famed fashion designer Halston out soon, we thought it was a good idea to look back on a fabulous coffee table book written by Elaine Gross and Fred Rottman. The book is simply titled “Halston.” Throughout much of his short and happy life, Halston became the fashion designer with the Midas touch. As a milliner at New York’s famed Bergdorf Goodman, he shot to meteoric fame suggesting to then new First Lady Jackie Kennedy that she should consider wearing a small and elegant hat he created. Thus the pill box had exploded, becoming the must-have fashion accessory of the early 1960s. Departing from hats in the late 1960s, Halston launched his first collection. Unfor tunately, critics compared the space-age collection to that of Andre Courreges. Halston took the whole thing in stride, always the positive effervescent friend to all. He waited a few more years and captured the 1970s will a soft simple elegance that had not been seen in American fashion since the late 1940s and early ‘50s. He would go on to become the most successful American designer ever! In 1983, Halston signed a six-year contract with retailer J.C. Penny. The decision would prove disastrous for both parties. Then he turned around and sold his name to Nortan Simon and lost total creative control, from the models he used to the fabrics and fashions he chose. While his is a cautionary tale of greed, the simplicity of his fashions are still being heralded as the very best ever. Every coffee table needs this book!

Louise At only 3-months-old, Louise is a bundle of puppy love and energy. This adorable German Shepherd mix is currently 7 pounds, but you can expect her to keep growing in size.
