Remembering ... Geoff Edmunds By Bill Dougherty

We were saddened to learn of the passing of famed home builder and Valley philanthropist Geoffrey Edmunds who died this winter. He made an indelible mark in the building community as well as the massive world of fundraising. In the mid-1990s, I was introduced to Jane and Geoff Edmunds while I was a reporter at Trends, long before I purchased the publication in 2000. They had to be two of the kindest and nicest people I’ve met. Geoff had a warm and friendly mid-western personality and was a pleasure to talk with. Jane was a West Texas native and I truly believe people from that region are some of the nicest people in our country. Together, the combination made for a dynamic couple. At the time, I had purchased an Al Beadle condominium at Bridgewood North Forty. While the north side of the complex had been designed by Mr. Beadle in the early 1970s, it was Geoff who finished out the project later. While both sides of the community were wonderful, I always felt the Geoffrey Edmunds side was far better built. We would often talk of the famed and often photographed condominium complex during cocktail receptions. Geoff Edmunds was a huge philanthropist. Together with his wife, they put their Midas stamp on everything they touched. Both were gallant supporters of Mayo Clinic, ASU, Barrow, Valley Presbyterian Church and American Heart Association. I remember well a note he sent me in 2003 when Jane became a Trendsetter. He told me how very proud of her he was and considered himself blessed to have such a hardworking wife in the community. He closed the letter by thanking us for bestowing the oldest award in the state honoring women to his adoring wife. He was quite a guy! To list Geoff’s accomplishments would require far more paper then we have available. Scottsdale Ranch, Gainey Ranch, Stonegate, Gray Hawk, The Boulders, D. C. Ranch and Esplanade Place were just samples of the magnificent properties the master builder created with his fine team. Geoff loved a good glass of fine wine, a round of golf, pretty much any ASU affiliated sporting event. He loved James Bond films. But we both agreed that the newest offerings missed the dreamy escapism of previous films. Although Geoff received countless awards and honors, he was very quiet regarding his tremendous success. He brought style, elegance and master craftsmanship to all his projects. His philanthropy touched many lives. He loved his wife, children and grandchildren dearly. He once told me that his idea of happiness was spending time with his family on Coronado Island. Geoff was a true gentleman and his impact on our Valley will be felt for decades to come. We will all miss him.

Meet Dr. Gregory Brown of RéVive Skin Care Dr. Gregory Brown is the epitome of a true Southern Gentleman. The Louisville Kentucky physician is not only soft-spoken and gentle but also one of the sharpest minds in the medical field. We had the opportunity to speak with him at Neiman Marcus, Scottsdale. Dr. Brown dropped by the Dallas-based specialty store for a personal appearance and to showcase his hugely successful skin care line RéVive. Tell us a little bit about your background? Following a car accident as a teen, I saw the devastating effects of an auto accident. That was when I knew I wanted to help. I knew I would eventually become a physician. How long were you a physician before you transitioned to skincare? I spent two years in San Francisco training in labs and experimenting with various plastics and serums to aid in burns and the aging process. These serums help to not only reverse the aging process but to stabilize and renew the epidermis of the skin. Did your treatment of burn victims accelerate this skin care line? The knowledge that I gained in clinical trials dealing with burn victims helped greatly for the future of the product. That was when I decided to launch the line back in 1997. Neiman Marcus would become our very first customer. What do you consider your greatest product or products? Our first product is still my very favorite. I always select the night cream above anything else, since it works while you sleep. How did biotechnology inspire your products? Biotechnology is the absolute essence of my products. Without them we would be at a loss. They have allowed us to do so

much more regarding improving the overall regeneration of skin. There is nothing currently on the market that can assist in a better way than that of biotechnology to aid in the repair of skin cells. What’s your best advice for obtaining good skin? Absolutely abstain from going out into the sun. If you must, always apply sunblock. Smoking is another habit that should be avoided. Cigarette smoking pulls the blood away from healthy skin. What is your best product for losing wrinkles? Our eye and face serums are excellent. Also remember that if you get a face lift you will always lose skin volume. This is something a lot of people don’t realize when they decide to have cosmetic facial surgery. What are your hobbies and philanthropic endeavors? I love to collect post War art. I am also very involved with The Healing Place in Louisville, Kentucky. It serves as a free recovery center for men and women suffering from addiction.

The fabulous Tim Braun, who is one of the most generous gentlemen we know, is our Fabulous Phoenician. I can’t think of anyone who deserves this award more than he. For more than two decades, the Vice President and General Manager of Neiman Marcus, Scottsdale has gone to the moon for the social community. When other long-standing specialty stores said “No!” Tim Braun always said yes. We are delighted to bestow this honor on him, and we look forward to celebrating our new Trendsetters and him on September 29th, 2020 at Montelucia. Since 1985 along with the Trends Charitable Fund Board, we have selected 10 ladies for their outstanding civic and charitable contributions and their individual style. Costume Institute, which some thought was doomed, gathered the talents of Ellen Jean; who at a moment’s notice, showcased a magnificent tribute to India and the countries opulent and avant-garde fashions. Ms. Jean is someone to watch! Her extraordinary efforts, fine talent and short time-span established one of the greatest exhibits imaginable. Everyone who matters was on hand to celebrate the triumphant evening. Here is just a sample of the name-dropping guest list: Joel Cohen (we never saw Libby,) Ann Siner, Helene and Joe Presutti, Jennifer and Chip Carmer, Linda Herold and Marty Bell. Shortly before we went to print, we learned of the death of international best-selling author Clive Cussler. While I only knew Mr. Cussler

to say “hello,” I’ll always remember just how kind and personable he was and what a gentleman the great adventurer was. I had the pleasure to socialize with Mr. Cussler and his always lovely wife Janet on several occasions. Their philanthropic touch was quiet and often very much under the radar, a departure from the flashy high-society star billing of those around them. In his majestic and brilliant life; he wrote more than 85 bestselling books, owned and operated several successful advertising agencies and was an extreme maritime enthusiast. His sense of venture was evident in his writings and he had the ability to take the reader on tremendous journeys. He will be missed. BAD SOCIAL BEHAVIOR: Three socialites from three different organizations have been pink slipped! For years their officious, demeaning and dismissive behavior to some of the kindest people in the social swim was simply ignored and tolerated. But a new and emerging generation of ladies is far less passive than previous generations for very bad social behavior. Two have called just about anyone who will listen to their “I don’t understand why I was let go” tales, while the other has remained suspiciously silent. Some have tried to intervene on their behalf. What a waste of time. Leopards don’t change their spots.

I was born and raised in Florence, which instilled in me a lifelong desire to cultivate beauty in everyday life. The rough stones come from all over the world, wherever the highest quality gems are mined. Making a Difference Every Day The shy little girl who entered grade school, and occasionally expressed that shyness with tears, didn’t stay shy for long. Her sister and very best friend Debbie, just 17 months older, did a lot of the talking for them both; especially when it involved dessert or a coveted item at the toy store. Fortified by her big sis and supportive family, Denise did not let her shyness stop what her heart told her she needed to do. The daughter of parents Herb and Patti Dreiseszun, who were meticulously organized whether in their business and community pursuits or in the kitchen pantry at home, Denise learned to organize her world early on and overcome her shyness with purpose and a plan. She saw how her parents got others involved and recalls doing the same for her first big event – a surprise birthday party for her thirdgrade teacher. Since then, she’s been unstoppable. Phoenix Art Museum and Arizona Costume Institute hosted an exclusive opening of India: Fashion’s Muse on Friday, February 28. Featuring more than 50 ensembles and an array of accessories and ephemera, the exhibition explores India’s influence on more than 200 years of Western fashion, along with works by contemporary Indian designers. Guests enjoyed complimentary cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, a saridraping demonstration, live musical performances, and an opportunity to discuss the exhibition with Helen Jean, the Museum’s Interim Jacquie Dorrance Curator of Fashion Design. Hollywood’s biggest night came to Arizona once again. Billie Jo and Judd Herberger created an intimate affair in the private club house of their opulent waterfront penthouse. The festivities not only showcased the Academy Awards, but also raised money for the preforming arts in the Valley. The event was spearheaded by Oscar De Las Salas and it helped raise funds for Valley Youth Theatre. Guests arrived in stunning gowns and tuxedoes. Chef Tommy D’ Ambrosio treated everyone to a lavish spread of hors d’ oeuvres and signature cocktails. After that, the party sat down to watch the much-anticipated show. A little while later, pizza arrived courtesy of Pizzeria Bianco, to cap off the wonderment of the spectacular night. They raised a lot of money and had fun doing it too. That Girl! A posh group of merrymakers gathered at the Arizona Biltmore Resort the other evening for the Beach Ball. This year the leave your tux and ball gown at home affair, toasted the very hip and very affluent South of France. The ballroom was transformed into a chic French Rivera themed night. Guests arrived and departed decked in Grace Kelly and Cary Grant resort-inspired attire. Afterall, what two celebrities are more closely associated with the magnificent Gold Coast then those two lovelies? Whitney Heglie and Brook Koop chaired the evening’s festivities. Congratulations to both for putting the ball back on a far more sophisticated path. Herbert and Julie Louis were honored. The beautiful Shelia Zuieback was bestowed the Spirit of Hope Award for her tireless dedication to Phoenix Children’s Hospital and the gala. Mrs. Zuieback, stunning in strands of red that dropped to the floor, also took home top honors as Belle of The Ball. Up next year, ball chairs will be none other than Julie Duncan and Katie Stoll. Samantha Harris is many things: a wife, mother, Emmy Award-winning TV host, health coach, author (Your Healthiest Healthy) and cancer survivor. She’s also the latest ambassador of Gateway for Cancer Research, a role that furthers her commitment to spotlight the people and organizations that are making a difference in the world of cancer treatment and research.

Cameron Mathison is an Emmy nominated actor, current television host of Home and Family and cancer survivor. This spring, he’s adding a new title to the mix: Master of Ceremonies for the 4th Annual Gateway for Cancer Research Vino con Stelle. Being the public face of an event that supports cancer research funding comes on the heels of Mathison’s own cancer journey.

Considered by many to be the picture of perfect health, Harris was diagnosed with an invasive form of breast cancer in early 2014. The diagnosis came after having been issued a clean bill of health following a mammogram the previous fall. While medical imaging and test results indicated that the lump she discovered just 11 days after her mammogram was benign, Harris knew something wasn’t right. She consulted multiple physicians and underwent a series of tests, which ultimately confirmed that the lump was cancerous.

Mathison spent most of his professional life in the public eye, working as a soap opera actor, television host/news correspondent, and Hallmark movie mainstay. While his outward appearance has always depicted health and fitness, he secretly battled a years-long issue of chronic and unexplained abdominal pain. In September 2019, Mathison, 50, demanded that his doctors dig deeper to determine the cause. That’s when MRI results revealed the culprit – kidney cancer. A tumor on Mathison’s kidney was confirmed as renal cell carcinoma.

Harris made the difficult decision to have a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction surgery. Today, Harris is cancer free; living life to its fullest; and helping educate others about the importance of knowing your body, trusting your instincts and being your own advocate.

Mathison was fortunate that the tumor was found and removed before the cancer spread to his lymph nodes. This is especially true given that doctors say it had likely been growing on his kidney for close to 10 years. Knowing firsthand that cancer can sometimes be difficult to detect and diagnose, Mathison is eager to help rally philanthropists and arm oncologists and clinician-scientists with the funding needed to better understand the ways to fight cancer.

ALYCIA MONDAVI Celebrity Vintner and Committee Member, 4th Annual Vino con Stelle Gala Gateway for Cancer Research Alycia Mondavi and her three sisters weren’t just born and raised in Napa Valley, they have been working in its famous vineyards almost since birth. As members of one of the premier wine families in the U.S., by age 12, she jokes, they could run the lab and the vineyard on their own. Now serving as the CEO of Aloft and Dark Matter Wines, Alycia has taken the family business one step further – sustaining a premium wine label with her sisters. Each step of the process – growing, harvest, bottling and marketing is overseen by family members, making Aloft and Dark Matter a true labor of love. In addition to her business pursuits, cancer research is a cause near and dear to Alycia and her family and one they donate considerable time and resources to each year. As a featured vintner and committee member for the 4th Annual Gateway for Cancer Research Vino con Stelle event, Alycia has found a way to blend her two passions, wine and philanthropy. Alycia also serves on the board of the Napa Valley Vintners, as well as various other charitable organizations in Napa and around the country.

One of the most anticipated evenings of the social season played out just the other night. The Honor Ball 2020 which benefits HonorHealth services, treatments, research and innovation for cancer, cardiovascular and stroke made a huge splash at the Camelback Inn. The ball was its usual sell-out success. Noted physicians and healthcare professionals abound made the scene. 14 gallant couples were in charge this year and they made the festivities brilliant! A special tribute was paid to the much loved and much missed Ruth Lavinia, who did so much for the ball over the years, including chairing it. Jean and Curt Feuer were honored for their tireless commitment to the organization and the ball. Since they are one of our very favorite couples, we couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have been happier! The White House design Studio blew it up! They did a magnificent job creating a supreme and beautifully decorated ball room. Guests moved and grooved to the sounds of West Coast Music and famed 3 TV personality Scott Pasmore served as this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s emcee. Karen Stull took home top honors as Belle of the Ball and she looked radiant in shades of scarlet and midnight black.

There they took in a wonderful video on the discovery and recreation of Victoria T-Rex. When the film finished, a massive set of drapes drew revealing the mammoth recreation of the dinosaur in its entirety. Everyone gasped! The Whitehouse Design Studio lent their respective design talents and transformed the center into a jungle themed affair. It was a smashing evening and the attendance was simply unbelievable!

Once stateside, a request from Nancy Reagan prompted Sara and Yvonne to use their influence to address ‘America’s best kept secret’ – child abuse. In 1978, the organization opened Children’s Village USA (now Childhelp Merv Griffin Village). A few years later, the lines opened at the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline – 1-800-4-A-CHILD – the first and only national hotline devoted to child abuse issues. This hotline operates today with professional counselors staffed 24/7 to answer calls, texts and online chats. With brick and mortar facilities in California, Virginia, Tennessee, Arizona and the District of Columbia; and programs and services impacting every state, Childhelp has served more than 10.5 million

CHILDHELP DRIVE THE DREAM GALA

People were still talking about the December cover of Trends which featured the three beautiful gala chairs Ivy Ciolli, Dru Hammer and Jacqueline Nerguizian; when the big night arrived. The trio had made waves on our cover in stunning Saks Fifth Avenue gowns and fine jewels by JN Jewels. When they arrived to chair the sold-out bash at the Phoenician; the three ladies managed to look completely different, but just as stunning. It was a great plan to challenge their audience and beautifully executed too. Dennis Thompson and the White House Design studio turned the ballroom into a magnificent recreation of the set of Mary Poppins, for which the evening was themed. Large trees, breath-taking flora and floating tea pots; created a magical and dreamy set for the evening’s festivities. Then Michael Barnard, the genius behind Phoenix Theatre, topped off the night with a cast of thespians in Poppins-like attire; complete with song and dance. Founders Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson took to the stage as they have both done for more than 6 decades. They thanked dozens for their tireless dedication to the organization. Carol and Jim Hebets served as Vice Chairs to the event. Laurie and Budd Florkiewicz together with Cheryl and Ira Gaines were honored as well for their efforts to wipe out child abuse on a national scale. Comedian Melissa Peterman wowed and humored the enormous crowd as the event’s emcee. Later on; REO Speedwagon, Fran and Anton Cosmo and Rosevelt Rawls all provided grand-scale entertainment to cap off the hugely successful event. Eileen Yeung stunning in aqua and jewels to match, was clearly Belle of the Ball.

Chef Gio Ossoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spot is tucked away inside the Bespoke Inn Bed and Breakfast. It is a charming and intimate gathering place that has a European feel and ambiance to it both inside and out on its fantastic patio. He has cooked in many kitchens before opening this spot to fulfill a life-long dream. It is a Mediterranean inspired menu that changes often but the attention to detail and freshness remains key. The pastas are handmade and the produce is seasonal and from local AZ farmers. We started with the insalata; a simple salad of lettuce, shaved pecorino cheese and lemon vinaigrette. We also had a creamy burrata with grilled Meyer lemon, extra virgin olive oil with prosciutto di parma. To follow that was Ricciola, a sashimi-style yellowtail amberjack with cracked paper and charred tomato aioli. Our main course was the Maiale; the Pork rib chop served on the bone over spinach topped with poached pear. This dish had been recommended to us and it did not disappoint. We also had the Cappesante seared scallops with crispy olive oil potatoes. On our next visit we would like to try the Bistecca Tagliata, a 40 oz Tomahawk Bone-in-Ribeye for two which also looked delicious. For dessert, we had the sticky toffee cake with salted caramel gelato and toffee drizzle. And for an after-dinner drink, I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t resist the specialty cocktail they make called A Night in Italy. It consists of Limencello, Lemon Sorbet, champagne, and lemon preserves. Truly like drinking a lemon meringue pie! The ambiance, food and service at Virtu was amazing and I highly recommend a visit soon. If you can, request outdoor seating while the weather is still nice. The Matriarch by Susan Page Among First Ladies, there are those that stand alone from the 20th Century: Eleanor Roosevelt, Jackie Kennedy, Lady Bird Johnson, Betty Ford and Barbara Bush. The others simply fall short of these outspoken and often triumphant success stories. Susan Page has done a marvelous job dissecting the complex personalities of the most beloved First Ladies in American History. This is a long and rich compilation and so good, you won’t want to put it down. The book chronicles the life of Mrs. Bush from her earliest years as a wealthy young lady to her courtship and marriage to George Bush. The two and their children uproot and move to Midland, Texas in search of oil, gas and riches. Everything they touch turns to gold except for one horrific turn. Much is written about the devastating death of their daughter Robin and her struggle with and death from leukemia at the age of 3 in 1953. The death shatters the Bush family and sends Barbara Bush into a lifelong battle with depression. The Matriarch is filled with all kinds of ups and downs. The humiliation of a one term presidency. The promise of a second Bush in the Whitehouse. The fights with Nancy Reagan, who treats the Bush family as if they were second-class citizens. She often strikes the couple from Whitehouse State dinners, then laughs about it to her horrified staffers. Mrs. Bush’s less then tolerable personality for fluff and the press. She tells Queen Noor’s handlers that she can eat what is being served at a state dinner since she is after all, just an American girl. Her literacy program is embraced. Her awareness platform shocks a 1980’s nation. These are just a few tidbits about a truly amazing and very tough woman who happens to be one of the most respected First Ladies in history.

Hudson: A Comedy About the Tragedy of History Nothing zings these days like a hip musical about an enigmatic character from American history. Alexander Hamilton was just about to lose his place on the $10 bill when Lin Manuel Miranda came along. Similarly, Quinn Mattfeld, Artistic Director of Southwest Shakespeare Company, and his writing partner Danny Tieger have written a musical that is sure to catapult history into a gleaming bright future. Hudson, the Musical. There’s a River, a Bay, news stands in every airport from here to Buffalo – all reminding us that Henry Hudson the 16th-17th Century explorer lived. But how did he die? There’s the enigma. No one knows what happened to Henry Hudson. His crew, fed up with his relentless search for the Northwest Passage, loaded their Captain onto a dingy along with his son, John, and a few others and set them adrift in the frigid waters of what is now called Hudson’s Bay – never to be heard from again.Southwest Shakespeare Company scores big with this buoyant new musical. It’s like Mutiny on the Bounty meets Waiting for Godot meets Who’s the Boss. A lot of soul searching can happen in a dingy contemplating a limited future. Even so, the insatiable humor of this high octane writing team prevails. There’s lots of catchy music and surprising antics onboard while the passengers face the inevitable. Highly recommend.
