LA DOLCE VITA The Season October to June
By Bill DoughertyThe month of April brough us more than 21 events. It’s wonderful to see such a smashing return after COVID. Trashy Summer Retro Read also returns this month to give readers a step back in time to a far less politically correct world. A time when trashy summer novels were all the rage. Enjoy!
We had the opportunity to visit the home of Janis Lyon the other night for a Heard Museum Moondance kick off and what a thrill it was. I hadn’t visited a magnificent setting since my wife Beth McRae and Mary Ellen McKee chaired Moondance in 2002. In the last 29 years, I’ve had the opportunity to pass through some incredible homes. Some brilliant and some that look like model homes. Mrs. Lyon’s home and a few more are the true standouts in a sea of white boxes with cheap aluminum windows. You get the picture.
Famed interior designer Gerry Ebbett has died. In the early 1960s he shot to fame at Warner’s Interiors and changed the blueprint of interior design in the Valley. He made Warner’s the most recognized home furnishings brand and design firm in Arizona. The representatives of Warner’s look as though they were sent from central casting to play models and business executives and Mr. Ebbett closely controlled the firm’s image well into the 1990s. He eventually departed the organization and continued to work with some of the most influential people in Phoenix. His great wit, style, and ability to transform anything into something beautiful is that of legend. He will be missed.
From all of us at Trends Magazine and The Trends Charitable Fund wish you a safe a pleasant summer. We hope to see you back here in October. Currently we are hoping that the new organiza tions which purchased AJ’s Fine Foods might decide to leave the distribution racks that grace their stores. I’ve been told the new owners want to remove them. That would be a shame. We have distributed this publication there for more than 23 years. It’s a tremendous benefit to non-Trends subscribers to be able to stop and pick it up. Stay tuned, there’s always more. Have a great summer!
IN COCKTAIL POLO NEWS YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT ...
Guests at a recent cocktail party were horrified by the tirade of a very angry and very well-known senior in attendance. Evidently, the two bartenders tried in vain to make some bizarre drink the socialite wanted. Never mind the line of more than 20 deep behind her. The angry woman tossed drink after drink in the garbage can next to the bar, demanding a new one be made. This was a cocktail party, not a cocktail lounge and your behavior was absolutely appalling! Perhaps it’s time for your family to ship you off to Lawrence Welk Village.

CELEBRATE YOUTH GALA
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale (BGCS) raised over $1 Million at its annual Celebrate Youth Gala presented by Tiffany & Bosco, P.A. The gala is the signature fundraiser for Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale, a local youth development organization that provides afterschool and summer programs for thousands of children and teenagers in the community. An Enchanted Evening was the theme of the sold-out Gala held at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort and Spa. The evening featured a cocktail reception and silent auction on the
Sonoran Terrace. Inside the ballroom, 550 guests were captivated by the speeches of triumph and transformation given by each of the seven youth of the year candidates sprinkled in between auction bidding. The impressive collection of goods and experiences in the live auction included luxury vacation packages from Inspirato, a diamond tennis bracelet from Samantha Michael Jewelry, a Scottsdale Fire Department Training Day experience and more.
Happy Birthday: You’re Invited!
By Patsy Lowry“Ah yes, I remember it well.”
– Maurice Chevalier, GigiMemories! One of my most magical memories was a birthday luncheon that my wonderful friend, Adrienne Schiffner, gave for me in her exquisite garden. We were surrounded by beautiful roses and a myriad of colorful flowers. Beauty everywhere! Knowing that she created such a lovely occasion especially for me, made my birthday very special. I felt honored, blessed, loved and cherished. Everyone invited felt thrilled and delighted to have been included. Knowing how incredible it was to have shared my birthday in such a memorable way, inspired me to give birthday luncheons for my friends. I encourage you to host a birthday luncheon for someone you care about. Birthday celebrations are often one of life’s big moments. Celebrating a friends birthday will give him/her an amazing feeling of joy, happiness and close friendship. Precious, lasting memories.
You, as the hostess, are acknowledging how dear and treasured the birthday friend is and how important he/she is in your life. You are willing to go the extra mile for him/her!
Here is a tip: Always make a toast to the birthday guest. Plan in advance what you most want to say. For example: “Whatever you ask for may you receive, whatever you seek may you find, whatever you wish for, may all your dreams come true. Wishing you abundant happiness, good health, prosperity and LOVE! Happy birthday to my treasured friend!”
HELPFUL IDEAS
1. Stand by the birthday guest while making your toast.
2. Fill your dining room with balloons, fresh flowers, candles, photos etc.
3. Have his/her name written on the birthday cake.
4. Ask in advance what is his/her favorite kind of cake/ice cream? Serve that.
5. Have everyone share personal stories about the honored birthday guest.
6. Make a special place setting for your birthday guest with as many hearts, cards, photos (anything shiny and glittery.)
7. Create a larger place card for the birthday guest. Add lots of stickers, hearts, rhinestones etc.
Remember, special birthday parties are time honored remembrances of shared friendship and love.
“The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate.”
– Oprah
NATIONAL QUARTERBACK HALL OF FAME GALA 2023
The lawn outside the opulent Scottsdale Resort, still remembered by many as The Scottsdale Conference Center, played host to this year’s National Quarterback Hall of Fame. An impressive silent auction traversed the stately greens, as many from the professional sports league
and community leaders gathered. Great inductions and well-deserved honors made for the perfect event. Lisa Henry Holmes and Tina Huber made sure the festivities were simply perfect.

Put Your Personality in Your Rooms – Rooms Speak!
By Barbara Kaplan, IFDA, Allied ASID www.BarbaraKaplan.comPeople often have trouble figuring out what kind of design will work best in their homes, and it can be overwhelming. To help people out on this front, I recently held a forum for consumers to discuss some of their design issues. It was fun getting together and learning decorating tips and feeding off one another’s ideas. Here are some of the questions that came up.
I would love to use some bold patterns on my upholstery. What do I have to know to successfully do this?
I love the use of big, bold patterns that make a statement. The best way to do this is as accents rather than on a large piece –of course, pillows are an obvious choice. Using solids as a base gives you flexibility but can enhance a pattern when the color is used as a background to bring out the colors in the print. Another is upholstering a screen and using it by the windows, behind a piece of furniture or as a visual divider in a room. I have one in my home, and it hides a large electric organ we can’t part with and use occasionally but don’t want to see.
How do you feel about mixing up styles and finishes?
This is one of my favorite things to do. It creates interest in a room and adds personality – your personality – that is. This is your opportunity to be daring and experiment. For example, you can put things together and create your own combination. The word popularly used for this style is eclectic; it’s when you combine a French-style desk with a contemporary chair. You are saying, “I am different, and I’m not afraid to show it.”
I see leather is back in a big way. Is it easy to use when decorating?
Yes, leather is a popular material these days and easier than ever to use when decorating because:
It comes in a variety of colors
The palate of colors is almost endless, from the brightest to the most muted tones. It’s fun and interesting to use leathers in unexpected colors. It’s a whole new way to look at leather. The feel of the leather. It is so soft that if you close your eyes it feels like fabric. Price. Leather has become more affordable. However, the softer the leather, the higher the price will be. You can mix your leathers with fabrics such as chenille and more economical microfibers on the same piece to give interest and contrast. The look is great!
I have noticed furniture is mirrored. How can we use these pieces? Mirrored furniture is back. This is a trend from the 1940’s that made a glamorous and dramatic statement in any room. It is being used on all kinds of furniture, Years ago a client had a miniature piano that I mirrored, and it was the talk of the home. Today’s interpretation has gone even further; dressers are being mirrored, and sinks are being put into them for bathrooms.
What is a popular decorating & design trend today?
Here are a few design trends you can consider. Don’t feel like you must match your furniture pieces – mix and match both finishes and styles. It’s creative not to place furniture against a wall. Come up with different ways to arrange the furniture to make it more interesting – such as placing the furniture at an angle or floating the seating to make the space appear more open and larger.
How can I make my painted walls more interesting?
Paint walls bright colors. Instead of having white ceilings, paint them the same color as the wall. If your wall color is dark, make sure the ceiling color is half the intensity.
This will make the ceiling color appear the same because it is facing down. By painting the ceiling, you can make the room feel cozier and not break up the look you created by painting the walls a special color.
Be bold! There is no one way to decorate a room. Your imagination and understanding of your needs is all it takes when you remember that, “Rooms have no feelings, YOU do!”
It was fun getting together and discussing decorating ideas and feeding off each other, just like we do in our Monthly Design Group. Contact me if you would like to join.
Thanks for all your questions and comments. If I use your question or comment in this column, I will send you a free, autographed copy of my new book “The Bajaro Method: Rooms Have No Feelings, YOU Do!”

Just as spring came into full bloom, Homeward Bound returned with a lavish event at Mountain Shadows Resort. The bash was put on by Kathi Neal, Roseann Dunteman, Tiffanie Leyvas, Patty Sapp and Suzanne Dickey. Vast amounts of some of the finest gourmet foods filled the buffet which imaginably traversed the opulent patio as quiet music played and cocktails flowed. Camelback Mountain overshadowed the
early evening showing shimmering shades of purple and violet hues upon the rakish crowd of guests. Luxe raffle Items included: a Katy Perry Las Vegas experience, a Louis Vuitton handbag, a private chef experience and on and on and on. Proceeds from the event serve to benefit families in need and the homeless. Smashing in shades of silver: Paula DeMore. What a beautiful affair!

Summertime Youth Etiquette
By Heather WagenhalsSummertime means exploration and excitement for kids. It’s also a time when manners and etiquette helps kids stay safe, build positive relationships, and enjoy the season to the fullest. Here are some tips for parents, grandparents, and caregivers to help children practice good summer etiquette.
Avoid:
DISRESPECT IN PUBLIC
Being loud or disruptive, running or rough play in crowded areas, and general rudeness may lead to lost privileges or access. Remind kids that others are there to enjoy themselves as well and if they desire respect, they must be respectful first.
CARELESSNESS WITH NATURE
Littering, veering off designated trails, disturbing animals, plants and habitats can be life-threatening as well as disrespectful. Remind your little ones about the importance of respecting even the smallest creatures.
Do:
DRESS APPROPRIATELY
Dress for the weather, and the location with age-appropriate and modest attire. No swimsuits at the museum. This includes chaperoning adults.
SOCIALIZE WITH KINDNESS
Saying “please” and “thank you,” using polite language, giving others personal space and being courteous is helpful when forging new friendships and deepening existing ones. This includes being thoughtful and respecting their elders and addressing them properly.
FOLLOW THE RULES
Take a moment to review family rules in addition to posted rules in public places such as beaches, museums, and sports parks. This ensures everyone can stay safe, create great memories and enjoy the break from school.
THE BOARD OF VISITORS CHARITY BALL 2023
A lovely sea of Flower Girls canvased the terrace of the Camelback Inn for the much-anticipated Board of Visitors Charity Ball. The oldest and most important charity in the state didn’t disappoint this year, as they pulled out all the stops for a perfect night. Laura Westfall did a stunning job as the Chairman of the ball. Molly Bland served as the charity’s Chairman. Both made absolute magic happen! Guests mixed
and mingled. Cocktails flowed and hors d’ oeuvres were tremendous. Merrymakers finally made their respective ways to the terrace as fortyone beautiful young ladies were presented to society. Proceeds from the evening served to benefit more than 25 well-deserving charities. Bell of the Ball: Kari Denk and shades of fuchsia. Dapper Dan: Charlie Dunlap in full Highland Fling tartan. You should have been there!

Honolulu on My Mind
By Bill DougherbyFor the last decade the city of Honolulu has had a great resurgence. During the 1990s the city along with its prestigious Waikiki strip watched in horror as neighboring island took much of their tourist trade away. In the early 2000s, Waikiki was transformed into one of the cleanest and opulent shopping and dining spots on all the islands. Today it attracts and preserves everything that made it posh in the 1960s and 70s. As summer travel kicks into high gear, we hope you enjoy this quick reference guide to one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The Happy Hooker 1971
By Xaviera HollanderBy 1971,
Harold Robbins,Jacqueline Sussan and Sidney Seldon had all found remarkable success in the emerging late 1960’s “Trash Novel” genre. But no one was prepared for what Dutch runway model, embassy-secretary-turned, call girl and madam had up her sleeve. Her explosive autobiography The Happy Hooker shot to the number one slot of the New York Times Best Seller list. It shocked the nation and the world. The book chronicles Ms. Hollander’s boredom with the world of modeling and typing pools of the late 1960s. So, she quits her embassy job and embarks on a fast-paced, jet-set trip around the world as one of the most sought-after call girls imaginable. In 1970, she opens her own stable on Park Avenue and her bordello caters to the rich and famous. The service fee for one of her girls is an astonishing $1,000 per night! She leaves no stone unturned and is very graphic in her writings. Xaviera Hollander eventually goes on to publish more the 18 books related to sex, relationships and women’s rights. She became a monthly columnist for Penthouse Magazine for 35 years until the publication ceased production. She campaigned for women’s rights during the ERA bill and lobbied Washington for equal pay for women. But fame had its price. Ms. Hollander was arrested and deported back to the Netherlands in the early 1970s. She married and moved to Toronto, where she continued to publish her work. She claimed Washington politicians believed she would eventually out them for visits to her New York brothel and that was why she was deported. However, she kept her cards close to her chest and remained a true professional. The Happy Hooker is a blast back in time when our country was far less politically correct, and the sexual revolution dominated almost everything. It is the perfect trashy beach read for the summer of 2023.
