Norma

SOCIETY | FASHION | HOME | DINING | ART

Norma is an absolutely adorable 15 years young domestic shorthair kitty whose picture speaks a thousand words of pure cuteness. This senior girl was surrendered to the Arizona Humane Society in early September after her owner had to move and unfortunately could not bring her with. A heartbreaking situation for all involved. While in AHS’ care, Norma has shown to be in great shape but will need regular veterinarian checkups to ensure she stays happy and healthy for the rest of her golden years. Everyone who has been around this cute girl gushes about how sweet and friendly she has been while in the shelter – even while undergoing medical exams! With adorable chompers that hang out from under her whiskered cheeks and bright yellow eyes, Norma might be mistaken for a mini panther if it wasn’t for her docile nature. And although not much is known about her past, AHS recommends a slow introduction to the family including other pets as she has undergone quite a bit of change recently. Meet Norma at AHS’ South Mountain location off of 15th Ave. and Dobbins Rd. in Phoenix. Her adoption fee is $50, visit azhumane.org/ adopt for more information.

Jolene It is no wonder why Dolly made a song about a girl named Jolene, especially when she is as gorgeous as this one! While the one-year-old Guinea Pig may not have flaming locks of auburn hair, this brunette beauty has no intention of stealing your man. However, she does apologize in advance for getting this tune stuck in your head. Jolene was surrendered to the Arizona Humane Society in July of this year after her owner unfortunately ran into housing instability issues, a trend that has been seen much more lately due to the ongoing pandemic and housing crisis. While this cute piggy ultimately made her way to the shelter, her owner’s sad situation is an important reminder that AHS has many resources for owners to try and keep pets in their loving homes and out of already over-crowded shelters. Guinea Pigs, otherwise known as cavies, make great pets but need specialized care including an appropriate enclosure and bedding, along with plenty of socialization and enrichment. Adorable furry friends like Jolene are very social creatures who love to chirp when they are happy and enjoy being around people and others of their kind (same sex of course to prevent unwanted litters). Additionally, guineas have a specific diet that includes lots of leafy greens with vitamin C rich foods, as they are unable to make their own. Meet Jolene at AHS’ South Mountain location off of 15th Ave. and Dobbins Rd. in Phoenix. Her adoption fee is $35, visit azhumane.org/ adopt for more information.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: BRANDON LEE

Art that Explodes with Colors Brandon Lee made a name for himself in Arizona as a 5-time Emmy Award winning news anchor for CBS5 & 3TV. He retired from news in September of 2021 to open Art Of Our Soul: an art healing program for trauma survivors. Brandon is a trauma survivor himself. He was sexually abused as a child and that trauma led Brandon down a dark path of drug addiction.

Brandon works with recovering addicts, survivors of abuse and sex trafficking, veterans, and abused children.

Brandon got into the arts as a way for himself to heal and that gave birth to his creating an art healing program for others.

Brandon is also very charitable with his art. He has helped nonprofits raise more than $250,000 in 2021-2022. Brandon feels it is important to use his artistic talents to help organizations provide resources to the underserved communities.

Brandon is beginning to make a name for himself for his use of texture within his abstract art. His favorite medium is acrylic on canvas. Each piece is created with several layers of acrylics that give his work depth. Brandon goes into each piece of work with intention. He uses colors that stimulate the brain to release dopamine. While most people use neutrals in their homes, Brandon loves to create art that explodes with colors to bring life into any room.

word CELEBRATE is. A new year is just around the every day in 2023! The more that you focus on CELEBRATING, the more there will be to CELEBRATE. We have just

come through a couple of difficult years. Let’s commit to making 2023 more joyous, fun, entertaining, enjoyable, and memorable than ever before. Make this the year to connect and strengthen your relationships with family and friends. Commit to creating new and fabulous rituals and traditions that will make your life more creative, balanced and loving. Think! Imagine! Dream! What do you want your family and friends to remember about the times that you spent together during 2023? Your family and friends are the structure, the architecture, the stronghold, the comfort, the solace and the dreams that give your lives meaning. Establish new traditions unique to you that everyone will cherish and remember in the years to come. Think about what you can do together, what really matters and then make it happen. For example, once a year play tourist in your hometown with your children and grandchildren. Take them to places of interest that they have never been or do new things that you have never done before. Go to the library, the Art Museums, a football game, Taliesin etc. Bring along a thermos of hot chocolate and cookies that you all baked together. Sing your favorite songs in the car. Have each person share their favorite story. Make up games. Spending fun, quality time together and making memories is the most precious gift that you can share.

TELLTALE SIGNS YOU’RE MARRIED TO OR ARE IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH A NARCISSIST Are you trying to determine if you’re married to or are in a relationship with a narcissist, do not make it more complicated than it needs to be. Simply use the duck test - If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it probably is a duck! Because there are no blood tests, exact physical determinations or internal imaging tests that can identify narcissistic personality disorder (NPD,) therapists observe attitudes and behaviors that a person presents. There are many signs a narcissist can exhibit. Here are five common identifiers to use as a guide: • Do they have empathy and compassion? Empathy and compassion for someone goes beyond a response like, “That must feel like crap,” to demonstrate that you understand and care about how someone feels. Most individuals experience empathy instinctively and intuitively. A narcissist tends to lack the ability to offer understanding and can’t relate to the emotions of others. This often reveals that a narcissist will not feel guilt or shame for their own behaviors. • Are they open to different opinions? Holding convictions close to the heart is understandable. While listening to differing opinions may threaten those convictions, there is a difference between standing your ground and forcing your opinion on someone else. A narcissist will do the latter, even if it’s about the most futile of subjects. A person with confidence doesn’t need to be right all the time. • Are they hypersensitive to criticism? A narcissist is quick to point out flaws in their partner, yet they are incapable of recognizing their own flaws. This characteristic goes beyond having a big ego. Narcissists refuse to engage in self-betterment because they actually believe there is nothing they need to change about themselves. Yield caution if you find yourself trapped in this vicious cycle of blame and deflection as you will always be the problem for a narcissist. • Do they have an Inflated ego? Narcissists have a sense of self-importance. This may include self-entitlement, or the belief others are envious of their “successes.” They are captivated by fantasies of brilliance, physical beauty, and limitless success. The inflated ego is differentiated from an individual who is self-confident or vain whereas a narcissist has deep-rooted insecurities and needs excessive praise or compliments.

18

• Do they Gaslight? Gaslighting is a VERY common trait of a narcissist that distorts another’s sense of self. Many of our clients have shared stories about their partners and this manipulative and harmful habit. Gaslighting causes a partner to second-guess themselves, absorb blame where none exists, and lose their identity. When a narcissist gaslights a partner, they aim to seek power and control over the other person by warping their reality and forcing them to question their own judgment. Narcissists are covert and often present as well-adjusted individuals. If you believe you are in a relationship with one, our advice would be to get out if you can – and don’t look back! A person who has been in an intimate or long-term relationship with a narcissist may experience anxiety, depression, feelings of worthlessness, and/or post-traumatic stress disorder. It is important to work with a behavioral health professional to process the abuse and understand the warning signs of NPD. un-tied is here to help clients navigate the complexities of separation and divorce. When working with our clients we have learned that no two situations are alike yet one of the most common threads that weave them together is the belief their partner is a narcissist. THE SMOKE TREE RESORT REVISITED A crowd on more than 150 people gathered on a brisk fall evening at a mid-century modern home in Paradise Valley to learn more about the plans for the Smoke Tree Resort. Bill Doherty, a Canadian investor, strongly believes in the preservation of the resort, which has been closed for more than a decade. Story boards adorned the property. Chef Matt Carter and Brian Raab highlighted scrumptious epicurean fare for the guests from

20

Fat Ox and The Mission. Cocktails flowed and guests mixed and mingled to learn more about the quiet elegance Mr. Doherty and his team plan to bring to the resort. If things go as planned, The Other Place, once a Valley restaurant favorite, will become The French Cowboy and the resort will take on a slightly European flare yet will keep all nuances from the former property intact. Stay tuned. There’s always more. Coverage courtesy of Nichole and Bob Stearns

INTERIOR DESIGN

Trends or 2023 By Barbara Kaplan, www.BarbaraKaplan.com Interior design trends for 2023 are all over the map. It’s no surprise when you look around the world, at what is going on politically, economically, and socially. Design is always a reflection of people’s attitudes. It has become a global experience. During the pandemic years, when our economy was suffering, colors were muted, dull and somber … lots of grey! Many manufacturers went out of business and new designs were not created. The DIY craze grew, and people started decorating for themselves. Due to the internet and the abundance of information and resources available, people can make purchases with confidence. Today we have done a 180. Colors are alive and vibrant. Several colors and patterns are combined for interest and dramatic effects. Benjamin Moore just named the color of the year as Raspberry Blush 2008-30 – which is a shade of coral tinged with pink. People have become less fearful to add color to express their personal taste and style both at home and in their lives.

• Because the internet has endless amounts of DIY opportunities for consumers, it can be overwhelming. It is important to remember that less is more. You can always add later. • The trend is to express your personal taste. The days of keeping up with the Joneses is over. Now individuality shines. Surround yourself with what you love! • The “undesigned and undecorated” look is in. A casual and comfortable lifestyle appearance says somehow the décor just came together organically and effortlessly. Living is easy and just happened. Biophilia is in ... lots of plants! • Accessories complete a room. Accessories tell the story of the people who live there. They fill a room with life and personality. They add color, texture shape and interest. • Pillows are the rage too. The power of a pillow can change an entire room. Mixing and matching colors, patterns and sizes create fun, interest, and individuality. • Cabinetry throughout the house does not have to be the same. Each area has its own function, style, color, and personality. This includes different countertops too. • Hardware for cabinetry is the same as jewelry for a person. Your choices of styles and finishes give you the opportunity to change and coordinate metals and style in each room. • Carpet comes in many styles, heights, and yarns. Patterns are often raised in same or contrasting colors. Shag is back and carpet squares are now used for residential applications. The variety is endless. • Metal fibers are threaded into carpet fibers to give a glow of glitter and glitz. They could be gold or silver, subtle or pronounced giving carpet elegance and drama. • Wood is still a rich, elegant, and beautiful choice and now ceramic tile that looks like wood is the rage. Even vinyl in wood patterns is seen more. These low maintenance twins come in endless choices of color and types of wood.

Here are a few of the trends I see reflecting for the new year:

• Area rugs are being used on hard flooring surfaces as well as on carpeted areas. They can define a grouping of furniture and define any space with color and interest.

• Because of the expanded opportunities for design, the interior designer’s role has expanded. The designer often becomes a consultant to guide and empower people through their projects, giving the consumer creative ideas that they can complete themselves.

• Fabrics are blended with mixed fibers. They have lots more texture and come in matt and shiny finishes. Faux leather and suede are extremely popular and available in endless colors.

28

• Furniture is less heavy and lighter in color. The look is sleeker and more contemporary. Woods are stained or painted in lighter colors. The finishes are more organic and rustic.

Most importantly, be true to yourself and have fun, when decorating your personal environments, because, rooms have no feelings, YOU do!

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT

Gateway for Cancer Research Vino con Stelle At Gateway for Cancer Research’s fifth annual Vino con Stelle, the cause was serious, but the vibes were celebratory. Held at The Phoenix Theatre Company on Oct. 28, the invitation-only event solidified its position as one of the region’s must-attend galas. From the starstudded guest list to the rare wines paired with world-class cuisine and dynamic ensemble of entertainment, it was a spectacular night raising funds for Phase I and II clinical cancer trials around the world. Thanks to the organization’s incredible fundraising prowess, Gateway is on par to award nearly $9.7 million in grant funding this year alone to researchers investigating treatments and therapies for a wide range of cancers, including breast, pancreatic and blood cancers. In true Vino fashion, the affair featured an incredible menu. Curated by Iron Chef winner and local restaurateur Chef Mark Tarbell, the dinner event included an exquisite wine selection directed by expert sommelier, Anthony Giglio. The atmosphere, entertainment, and menu cemented Vino con Stelle’s reputation for being a foodie’s dream fundraiser and a staple of the Valley’s philanthropic scene. Vino con Stelle was hosted and sponsored by global philanthropists Dr. Stacie J. Stephenson, Gateway vice chair, and Richard J Stephenson,

Gateway founder and chairman. Actress and comedian Caroline Rhea emceed the event, introducing the night’s entertainers, Deborah Cox, Pia Toscano and The Tenors. In addition, Matt Iseman, host of American Ninja Warrior, past winner of The Celebrity Apprentice and cancer survivor turned advocate, received the Mary Brown Stephenson Award. Named after Mr. Stephenson’s late mother whose cancer diagnosis and subsequent death ultimately led to the creation of Gateway for Cancer Research, the coveted award is given to cancer survivors who use their voice to turn pain into purpose, spreading awareness and raising funds for cancer research and treatment. “Gateway is one of very few organizations focusing on early-stage cancer research, and 99 cents of every dollar we raise goes straight back to the cause,” said Mr. Stephenson. “These trials in particular are grossly underfunded, but have been shown to have the greatest patient impact in conquering cancer, spotlighting new ways of treating this ferocious disease and highlighting the relentless ingenuity of doctors and researchers across the globe. At Gateway, it is always and only about the patient, and events like this, while exciting, are what enable us to fund these truly life-changing trials and studies.” Founded in 1991, Gateway for Cancer Research is guided by one clear vision: to shape a world in which a cancer diagnosis is no longer feared. As of 2022, the organization has funded more than 195 clinical cancer trials at esteemed research institutions around the world. Cocktails flowed at the ArtBar prior to a special performance, which did a fine job recognizing those honored. This was followed by dinner and dancing. Vintage cocktail attire was the suggested attire for the evening and a lot of guests took great liberties to pull off many looks from yesteryear. Bravo!!!

INNER-VIEW: CHEF MARKUS FORD

More than a Private Chef When did you realize that being a Chef was your dream job? Well, I technically don’t dream of labor, in my dreams I’m already rich! I did however realize that this was going to be my career path at the age of 16. What formal training do you have that sets you apart from the rest? I received my formal training at Le Cordon Bleu, but I think its my informal training that has had the biggest impact. From upscale boutique hotels, large convention centers and fine dining/white tablecloth restaurants, I have done it all. I also try to meet at least one Chef whenever I travel. To date, my travels have taken me to over 40 countries and counting! You have gained an excellent reputation in both the epicurean & charitable worlds. Why do you think that is? Hospitality is in my blood! It feels good to give back whenever I can. I not only develop the menu with the client 1-on1, I will also

consult on all the event rentals, staffing levels, color scheme, and floral etc. I am the total package What was your most lavish event? Dinner for two with a staff of 46. Worst event you’ve ever done? Dinner for 550 in a very wealthy suburb where one of my assistants decided to build the assembly line “their” way. A table collapsed, and broke 400 dinner plates! Favorite event that you have done? That’s a tough one. A friend of mine who is in poor health had a milestone birthday party. I flew across the country to cook for her and 100 of her friends and family. As you walked into the basement of this dilapidated church you were just overwhelmed with emotion from the love that filled the room. That, and a Polish wedding that I catered that unexpectedly lasted for 3 days!

Favorite food trends? I can honestly say I don’t follow the trends. I do elegance, opulence, and glamour. I keep it classy; I serve food on plates. We are a rare and dying breed.

Favorite restaurant here in the valley? A toss-up between Dominick’s Steakhouse and Taco Bell. One has incredible service, excellent food, impeccable wines, and the other has chicken supreme chalupas! Both close at 10pm!

Margaret Merritt, Chris Beckley and Clyde Betts made the production effortless and fun for all. A great deal of needed funds were raised too. TRENDS IN DINING: MANCUSO’S

Haute and About By Bob Stearnes, Epicurean

Imagine walking into your grandma’s house, the aromas overwhelm you and every scent beckons your tastebuds. There is laughter and family and friends gathered together. Plates rattle, toasts are made and a hundred different stories are being told. Now imagine that kitchen is nestled in a tony downtown highrise in Phoenix’s sports and entertainment district. Grandma and Grandpa Frank and Agnes’ recipes are all in a book they call “the Bible” It’s appropriate because the dishes here are Heavenly. This is Mancuso’s. This charming yet bustling restaurant began in 1969 when Fran and Frank Mancuso moved from upstate New York and opened Frans Spumoni and Ice shop on 7th Avenue and Missouri. Frans mother Agnes had taught herself to cook being the oldest of eight children. No recipes needed just the dip of a finger to determine if it was right or wrong. After opening their first full service restaurant at the very

cosmopolitan Borgata, they later moved to Kierland Commons before finding their “home” in downtown Phoenix. Our friendly and very attentive staff began our culinary journey with one of Mamas specialties, the beef and pork meatballs nestled atop a sinfully creamy and decadent risotto with subtle hints of basil and sweet yet savory homemade marinara, it seemed the meatballs would simply fall apart yet they effortlessly held just together in every delicious bite. If that was not enough the seared Ahi tuna bites followed on a delightful crispy wonton with a wasabi teriyaki reduction. The contrast of the creamy Ahi with the crispy texture accompanied by the contrast of the two sauces was not only visually appealing but crisp on the palate. This extravaganza of flavors was followed by an indulgent salad of beets, goat cheese, walnuts, and a citrus vinaigrette. Flavor, crunch, savory and sweet. My stomach delightfully satisfied could not have been prepared for what was to follow. The plate of bone in veal Osso

42

Buco with a veal stock chianti reduction and gorgonzola potato mash accompanied with a tomato concasse and pan seared asparagus left my palate not only satiated but contemplating every delicious morsel. The meat literally melted off the bone even though a knife was provided it was not needed. Another house specialty the Shrimp and Scallop Scampi was more than I could even imagine. Perfectly seared scallops and equally cared for shrimp complimented each other in a sinful butter and garlic sauce atop the perfect amount of al dente linguine. Crisp yet perfectly cooked broccolini adorned the plate.

Mancuso’s isn’t just a restaurant, it’s a family story. It’s an event, it’s everything that you could want as a couple, a family, or a corporate event. But most of all, it’s home. Come here fast and come here often ... Mangia” Mancuso’s Restaurant 201 E Washington St Suite 201, Phoenix, AZ 85004 Located in: Collier Center (480) 556-0770 www.mancusosrestaurant.com

Dinner would not be complete, yet I could have easily stepped away at this point, without a house specialty of creme brulé cheesecake with a caramel drizzle, a creamy velvety texture sidled next to a classic tiramisu.
