Remembering ... Nick Balich By Bill Dougherty

A gentleman and a scholar, a family man and a truly humble guy. Those are the words you think of when describing Nick Balich. He passed away this fall, leaving an incredible legacy and lasting memories for the state of Arizona and the social community. In 1992 I was first introduced to Nick and his lovely wife Diana at a Phoenix Suns game by Christi Warner Beyer. At the time, the Suns were in the playoffs and the energy in the newly built America West Arena was high. Not a sports fan, I spent the game picking lent off my sweater while the rest of the stadium worked its self into a frenzy. We all stopped at El Chorro Lodge for cocktails after the game. Nick excused himself and picked up the tab. He would do this time and time again for the next several decades. Diana and Nick were high flyers on the social scene and deeply loved by the community they helped to build. Nick’s long career at Phelps Dodge was more than impressive. The Bisbee native and University of Arizona football star, who spent 37 years with the corporation, became involved in numerous charitable organizations. His community involvement in sports, tax research, government affairs and Phoenix social world would thrust Nick to the pinnacle of giving back to our Valley. He will always be noted for taking the Fiesta Bowl to its highest level. His commitment to ATRA, Kids Voting, Goldwater Institute, Boys and Girls Clubs, Elks, Masonic National Conference of Christians and Jews and on and on, were just a few of the organizations to receive his Midas touch. What a guy! Nick Balich will always be remembered as a soft spoken gentle giant. He was a man whose smile could illuminate the darkest of ball rooms. He had the ability to make everyone he met feel as if they were his best friend. One of the last true empire builders of the 20th century, he did business on a hand shake rather then a legal contract. Nick always put his large family first and beamed when they all followed suit in the philanthropic world. He changed our community and its people from all walks of life for the better. He seldom if ever took credit for his vast accomplishments. People like Nick Balich only come around once in a life time. Heaven just inherited perhaps its most gracious angel ever.

La Dolce Vita Can you believe the holidays are already upon us? Where did the fall go? I’ll tell you where it went, straight to the non-stop luncheons that now canvas The Valley. We had reporters at so many that we decided to dedicate our January issue to them. It would be wrong to throw them into a Best of Everything page in the back of the magazine. Since there’s so little going on in December, we felt it was apropos. People are talking about the triumphant success of the Phoenix Theatre gala. Just the other morning I had breakfast with Marylou Stephens who seems to be the director of just about everything at the theatre. We met at Vincent’s along with one of my star reporters Carol Bennett to discuss, not only the success of the Applause Gala, chaired by Lynn Love, Char Hubble and Jennifer Carmer (watch her fly), but also our great partnership with the Phoenix Theatre. Michael Barnard’s ears must have been burning! You might remember that it was just a short few years ago that he, along with Melanie Dillman and a lot of past Heart Ball chairs, put Char Hubble with Lynne Love and the theatre on the high Jennifer Carmer society map. Starting in

January, Trends will be showcasing its fine programs and plays. It’s the first time in the 32-year history of our publication that we have embarked on such a great journey. We hope you enjoy the new feature in 2015. You’ve known for years that Linda Pope is a true genius. But what you probably didn’t know is that for the last several years she’s been quietly working on her own television show, which just made its debut on the TLC network. “Ballroom Blitz” follows the lives of ladies and gentlemen who compete in ballroom dance throughout the country and perhaps even the world. We wanted to hold a launch party at our Paradise Valley home, which we have dubbed Green Acres. The home is a 1961 Palm Springs modern and the rather lengthy work in progress included having dozens of trees and shrubs removed recently. Sadly, we can no longer refer to it as Grey Gardens. Anyway the show aired the day before Thanksgiving, so Linda asked us to shelve the party for perhaps another time. Such a shame as our guests could have had so much fun Linda Pope

The other afternoon we met with Mikki Eveloff of The Clotherie at Vincent’s Bistro, the hottest place to see and be seen in the community for lunch. Darling Mikki, like the rest of the Valley, is devastated over the loss of her spouse Greg who died suddenly over the summer. We spoke of what a fine man Greg was and his gentle and quiet philanthropy and style. Under his leadership The Clotherie shot to international recognition and great fame. We also spoke of the future of the gallant men’s store. Our sales manager Patrice Metzler and I were both clothing buyers in another life and we told Mikki that we were happy to help, should she need anything. Mikki assured us that it was business as usual and that she would be taking over the operations. After our lunch concluded, I began to think of widows who had gone on to take their late husband’s companies to the pinnacle of success. Olive Beech quietly assumed the role of CEO of Beechcraft and took the light plane manufacturer to all-time highs. She would become the most awarded woman in aviation in the 20th century. Joan Crawford became an international ambassador for Pepsi Cola following her husband’s untimely death. She would spend the next 22 years opening Pepsi plants around the world and helped the soft drink company achieve record profits. Kathrine Graham, noted more for being an international socialite in the 1950s and early ‘60s, became the publisher of the Washington Post, when her much-troubled husband took his life in the fall of 1963. Ms. Graham would become the first women to head a Fortune 500 company and collaborated exten-

When was the last time you were served caviar at a charity ball? Probably in the roaring ‘80s? Well just the other night at the Biltmore Resort, the 2014 Phoenix Heart Ball Chair Brenda Howard did just that and a lot more too. I’ve attended the ball since the 1980s. It’s had highs and lows, like any other ball in town, but the other night was magical! I have to be careful since my own wife presided over the 50th anniversary of the ball five years ago, so I’ll just end by saying it was an absolutely extraordinary evening and that it was simply flawless. 10 Questions for … Chiara Boni of La Petite Robe

For more than 2 decades Florentine designer Chiara Boni has outfitted the world in her amazing fashions. In all natural fabric that stretches, they give the lovely ladies of Milan designs for the rich and famous as well as the everyday woman. She dropped by Neiman Marcus, Scottsdale and we had the chance to speak with her. What happens to your line when you die? I hope it continues. Look what Karl Lagerfeld did for Chanel. He resurrected a line that had almost vanished. I know Coco Chanel is looking down on him and

although they had different styles, she has to be happy. I hope my line goes on for a long time.

Who are your favorite designers? Emilio Pucci was a great inspiration to me. He used fabrics in his ski line in the early 1960s that stretched with the body. Although his fabrics are no longer available today, I hope my own fabrics are much like his were then.

On what occasion do you fib or exaggerate? I always try to be honest. If you lie, it always catches up with you in the end. What’s the hardest part of your job? I would not say my job is hard. It’s very challenging at times. I wake up happy every day, because I know there is someone out there I can make beautiful.

Where would you like to live? Florence! Although I enjoy living in Milan, there is nothing like the beauty, culture and art of my native city.

What are your most cherished possessions? My two dogs, my son and my collection of handmade furniture.

Who are your everyday heroes? Doctors and anyone else who has a soul. Someone that can cure the Ebola virus.

What 7 people living or dead would you invite to your dinner party? My ex-husband. My son. 4 women with a sense of humor. Marcello Mastroianni. and George Clooney and his new bride ... Sorry I picked more than I should.

The other morning she and her dashing business partner Roy Luwolt dropped by Saks Fifth Avenue, Phoenix. They were there for the much-anticipated Key to the Cure and to showcase their elegant line in the store’s posh shoe salon.

What makes the Arizona Costume Institute’s Holiday Luncheon so special? The Holiday Luncheon has become a Valley tradition held at the Phoenix Art Museum and is the major fundraising event. On view will be a number of rarely seen garments from the Fashion Design Department Collection specifically selected by Benefactor members of Arizona Costume Institute.

Are there any other special reasons to attend? Freddie Leiba, stylist to the stars will be the featured speaker. Freddie may be New York’s best kept secret as he has worked with music industry entertainers, screen and stage icons, as well as those who are famous in the fashion world. And, world renowned Maestro Ciao Pagnao will provide musical selections at the piano during the Champagne Reception and silent auction prior to the luncheon.

As Holiday Luncheon chair, what is your vision regarding the success of this event? I hope to convey the diversity embodied within the museum's fashion collection.

When was ACI established? The Arizona Costume Institute was founded in 1966 to support Phoenix Art Museum's Fashion Design Department in the acquisition and preservation of garments and accessories of historical and aesthetic significance. It is one among only a few in the entire country.

What is this year's theme and why? Our theme this year is " Celebrate.... Style. Beauty. Individuality. " Fashion

Buster Brown

Buster Brown is an 8-week-old Mastiff and Boxer mix who seems to be aware of his high rating on the adorable scale with his wrinkled brow and droopy puppy eyes. This pup is big on play and with oversized paws and clumsy puppy antics; Buster performs somersaults as he attempts to carry a stuffed toy that’s twice his size while romping across the yard. Thanks to a dedicated foster family, Buster is partially housetrained and has mastered the sit command but he will need a family with a large house, a spacious yard, a full-sized car and a heart big enough for a dog that will one day grow to be colossal sized.
